Spring is coming…
I love warm weather. I am just not fond of cold, wet weather. Possible reasons for my dislike:
• I grew up in southern Alabama, where we got very little freezing weather.
• I have loved going to the beach my whole life, even as a child. It’s my happy place.
• I dislike how the humidity makes the cold feel even colder. At least in Alaska, the cold isn’t the same as it is here.
• I love my swimming pool and summers relaxing in it.
• I hate that my dogs love the mud in the backyard and want to bring it into the house!
I’m excited that spring is almost here! Last spring, I started photographing the young women featured in this month’s issue. They have grown so much over the past year, and I have enjoyed capturing every moment. Learning about them, their aspirations, their families, and their lives has been a pleasure. I will miss them.
This is the last year I will participate in a modeling program for young women. Due to my back problems, I can’t continue. I am pretty sad about that. Photography has been a significant part of my life for the last 25 years, and it’s always hard to let go.
One thing I won’t give up is my “foodie” mentality! I love different kinds of food—steaks, chicken, sushi, barbecue, and fish. If prepared well, it can be an immense pleasure to the senses. Add a glass of wine, and it’s everything anyone could desire. You’ll find several restaurants in this month’s issue that want you to know they have many delicious choices on their menus! I encourage you to visit each one of them and discover your favorites! I have too many to name! I must be careful, or I could end up bigger than a cow! HA!
I hope you enjoy the amazing people and places featured this month. Please let them know how much you value all they do for our community!
May God bless you and yours…

Jaeley Barton became interested in modeling for Debbie Brower Photography when she saw the good that came from the program. “The program gives girls confidence in their self. I like how open Debbie is and how comfortable she makes me. I am thankful that I got the opportunity to do this, and it has helped my personal image and anxiety a lot,” Jaeley says.
Jaeley is the daughter of Randall Barton and Lana Donnelly and is a sophomore at Hooks High School. She enjoys participating on the Varsity Cheer Team, the FFA Heifer Show Team, the Student Council, Mu Alpha Theta, and the school’s Gifted and Talented program. Outside of school, she enjoys shopping, hanging out with her friends and boyfriend, working puzzles, and floating the river. She is a fun and easygoing young lady who also enjoys joking around.
“My dream job would be a criminal lawyer to save possible innocent lives. In five years, I see myself in law school and possibly engaged,” Jaeley says. Staying in all honors classes is an accomplishment that Jaeley is proud of and will help her in her future college endeavors.
“I look up to my mom because even when she is busy, she always manages to get everything done,” Jaeley says. Her mother’s example has impacted Jaeley’s motivation. “My motivation stems from knowing that if I don’t do the task at hand now, it will never get done!”
A senior at Hooks High School, Cloey Dills describes herself as a smart and very compassionate person. “I care deeply for others,” Cloey says. “My dream job is to either be an ultrasound tech or in the field of radiology. I want to be able to help people and be able to make an impact on their lives. I also think it is a job I would enjoy for the rest of my life because you learn all sorts of things about the body.”
Cloey is the daughter of David Dills and Alyssa Gilbreath. Cloey’s mom, Alyssa, is her biggest supporter and one she can always count on no matter what. “I look up to my mom because I know she will always be there for me. She pushes me to be my best, and I am so thankful for her. She is my biggest motivator.” Cloey explains. Cloey’s mom piqued Cloey’s interest in the Debbie Brower Photography Model Program. “I had so much fun, and I am thankful for the opportunity I was given,” Cloey says.
In school, Cloey is involved in the National Honor Society, Student Council, Mu Alpha Theta, Gifted and Talented, and Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Outside school, she enjoys participating in the Myrtle Springs youth group, going to town with her friends, listening to music, and playing pickleball. However, Cloey was not always this outgoing and involved.
“An accomplishment I am proud of is how, throughout my high school years, I have stepped outside of my comfort zone a little more and started to become more involved. I became less shy and anxious. I now enjoy doing certain things and actually being myself without worrying about everyone else and what they think,” Cloey says.
One of Cloey’s favorite books is “It Ends With Us” by Colleen Hoover. She likes it because it dives deep into complex relationships and emotions that are relatable, and it keeps her interested. In five years, Cloey hopes to finish college and start her dream job.
GROWING FOR 100 YEARS. 1925 TO 2025
A-Honor Roll Student, Teen Miss Redwater, Rodeo competitor, and a people person, Gracie Duncan is a very outgoing and busy young lady. A senior at Redwater High School, she is the daughter of Clint and Ashley Duncan.
Gracie started riding horses when she was eight years old. At a rodeo event in 2020, Gracie’s mom found her lying on the ground. What was first thought to be a concussion turned into Diffuse Axonal Injury, a traumatic brain injury. “I went through very intense therapy to get back to where I am today. My favorite therapist was an Occupational Therapist, and I want to be like her and help people. In five years, I see myself in college getting a degree in Occupational Therapy; it’s my dream job!” Gracie says.
Gracie also considers her recovery from this traumatic brain injury a personal achievement, saying, “Without God, I would not be where I am today. I am so thankful that He put me where I am now.” Gracie is still involved in the rodeo world and is part of the Region 4 Rodeo Association and the National Honor Society. She looks up to her grandmother and describes her as a very strong, always positive woman. “No matter what is thrown at her, she will make the best of it,” Gracie says.
Gracie’s favorite band is Fleetwood Mac, and she talks about their good music being fun to listen to. Her interest in the Debbie Brower Photography Modeling Program began with knowing Debbie in past years. “I’ve known Mrs. Debbie a long time. Modeling for Debbie has truly been a great experience. I enjoy taking photos with Debbie because she makes them so much fun!” Gracie says.
Kynlee Flippen is the daughter of Aaron Flippen and Bo and Tiffany Morris. A senior at Texas High School, she loves Jesus, people, and all things pink and gold. She strives for success and pushes herself daily to be the best version possible. Her hobbies include worshipping the Lord, dancing, spending time with friends and family, working out, and sports media.
Kynlee’s activity list is overflowing as she is involved in All Rhythm Dance Alley, TigerVision, THS Leadership & Student Council, Key Club, Rosebuds Junior Garden Club, National Honor Society, Mu Alpha Theta Mathematics Honor Society, and the Christian Warriors Church Media, Children, and Worship teams. Kynlee was also crowned Miss Northeast Texas Teen in January 2024, noting, “Throughout 2024, I had many ups and downs, but I was so blessed to be able to represent and serve the community that I love so dearly!”
Kynlee’s mom is her role model. “I look up to my mom because she has paved the perfect example of what a godly woman, mother, and wife should look like,” Kynlee says. Her motivation stems from her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. “Whenever I go through dark times, I know there is hope for my future because He is there with me every step of the way.”
Kynlee has recently been accepted at Southern Arkansas University and awarded nearly a full-ride scholarship, aside from her meal plan and housing expenses. She is graduating top ten in her class, which gives her an opportunity to further her education for a cheaper cost. “I am going to school for accounting and my dream in that field is to become a CPA and work for a major sports company. In five years, I hope to have graduated from college and be putting my degree to use. Hopefully, I will be in a committed and healthy relationship with a big future ahead for my family and me,” Kynlee says.
“Debbie was my pageant director as I served as Miss Northeast Texas’ Teen, and when she posted the modeling sessions for DBP, I couldn’t pass up the offer! I enjoy being myself and modeling alongside one of my best friends, Gracie Duncan,” Kynlee says.
Mia is a self-motivated, positive person who is passionate about helping others. She is the daughter of Tracy and Thelma Metcalf-Forte and granddaughter of Cordia Metcalf. “I am an only child but do not have the ‘only child syndrome.’ I am kind and caring, and I live by Dr. King’s Motto, ‘Everybody can be great because anybody can serve.’ You only need a heart full of grace and a soul generated by love,” Mia says.
Mia loves being in front of the camera, and the Debbie Brower Photography Model Program was a perfect fit. “Mrs. Debbie took my first picture when I was two years old. Those pictures are still on my parent’s fireplace mantle. Every picture she takes makes us look beautiful,” Mia says. “This modeling opportunity has been very special. My family and I had so much fun shopping for the perfect outfit for each photo shoot, and I had an awesome makeup artist. Modeling for Mrs. Debbie has given me a special memory that I will never forget.”
Creating new designs on her Cricut, traveling, volunteering, shopping, and spending time with her family are some of Mia’s favorite hobbies. She is also an active member of her school and community. “I am involved in the FCCLA, EAST, and Student Council, serving as a Student Council representative. My other school activities include participating in Project Prevent, East Night Out, the Principal’s Advisory Team, and the Razorback Pep Rally Spirit Team,” Mia says. “As a longtime member of Lonoke Baptist Church, I serve on the Usher Board, Youth Choir, Girl’s Ministry, Puppeteers, Youth Praise and Worship Team, Video Ministry, and the Southwest District. In my community, I am active in organizations such as The Scholars and the Delta Gems Academy. I am also a 2024 Las Amigas Debutante.”
Mia believes in hard work and knows how to get a job done. “I am also a Christian. I believe that Christians are supposed to be kind, caring, doing the right thing, willing to share, and willing to help others,” Mia says.
After graduation, Mia plans to attend Texarkana College and later transfer to Texas A&M University to pursue a degree in computer technology. She aspires to become a flight attendant and hopes to utilize her computer technology degree later in her career.

Her extrovert, fun, and crazy personality allows her to enjoy life and make the best of every day.
Although she is still in middle school, Eden dreams of becoming an entrepreneur or cosmetologist. She is proud of retaining AllA’s on her school report card and earning her father’s trust to get a cell phone.
Her love for modeling made her the perfect fit for the Debbie Brower Photography Model program. “I love being able to express myself in pictures along with getting all dressed up and spending time working on myself,” Eden says.
Eden’s favorite band is NSYNC, and she notes, “I just love how NSYNC they are!” Although the group has not been together since 2002, they completed five nationwide concert tours and sold over 70 million records, becoming one of the best-selling boy bands of all time with many popular hits that Eden enjoys today.
Eden’s motivation stems from her thoughts of herself, describing, “My image/character motivates me. I often ask myself the questions: Will I feel this way if I don’t do this? How will people see me?” Eden also finds herself looking up to a classmate.
“Kayle has the perfect life. She has a boyfriend, she’s the fastest in my class, light, pretty, kind to everyone, and has good grades,” Eden says.
In five years, Eden hopes to be in college and have good grades, with her parents’ support and a kind boyfriend!

She has performed in many theatrical performances and ballets. She was a title holder in the Miss American Organization from 2022-2024. Her excellent grades have earned her many academic awards, including the Highest GPA in AP Calculus and AP Chemistry. “I work very hard to study and yet participate in extracurricular activities in my community. I am proud that I have been blessed with parents who support me in my academic pursuits. I have been able to accomplish many awards and certificates of excellence due to this support,” Laila adds.
Laila is currently working on college acceptance. She plans to pursue her dream job of being a cardiothoracic surgeon. “One day, I wish to be able to save lives and perform heart transplants,” Laila says.
Laila’s motivation stems from the support of others, saying, “I really appreciate the fact that I have been able to have mentorship in my community. They say that there is usually one person who has impacted your life. This person has been my AP Calculus teacher, Rhonda Johnson. She has made me want to push through difficult math problems by understanding the mechanics and theories. I have learned from her that math is similar to everyday life experiences. Somedays, we have difficult decisions to make, but if we take it one step at a time, understanding the mechanics of our choices, we can solve the problem and be successful.”
Emma is a senior at Redwater High School and the carefree, loving, happy, and easygoing daughter of Amanda Spivey. “I look up to my mother. She is a single mom who has repeatedly shown up for my milestones in life no matter how busy she was. She has shown me that no matter how hard something may seem, I need to go for it anyway. She has shown me that she will be right beside me every step of the way.” Emma says.
Emma enjoys reading, making memories with loved ones, and participating in school activities. She is involved in color guard and band at Redwater High School, even winning titles along the way. “I was part of Redwater High School Band when they placed third overall in the State, and part of the Redwater Color Guard for multiple first-place color guard achievements. All my achievements with the color guard and the band have made me proud while I have attended Redwater High School. However, the one achievement that struck me the most was when the Redwater High School Band went from placing sixth overall to third in the State for 3A bands. I am so incredibly proud of my band and guard family and so happy to have been able to compete with them,” Emma says.
In five years, Emma sees herself graduating with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and starting medical school to become a psychiatrist. “I want to help as many people as possible to feel more comfortable with themselves. This is my dream job!” Emma says.
“I want to thank Debbie for being such a sweet and incredible woman,” Emma says. “I first got interested in working with Debbie to take my senior photos. But when I went to my first photoshoot, she was incredibly sweet and taught me many amazing things about modeling.”
Ryan Kate Walker believes the Debbie Brower Photography Model Program supports the idea that girls can be both smart and beautiful, two qualities she possesses. Ryan is the daughter of Greg and Jenny Walker and a junior at Texas A&M University – Texarkana (TAMUT). She enjoys reading and hiking for her hobbies and is a tour guide at the university.
Ryan is best described as independent, intelligent, and determined. These qualities allowed her to graduate high school with her associate degree and earn several local scholarships. Today, she is attending TAMUT to earn her nursing degree. She believes this will allow her to help others daily. In five years, she hopes to work in the medical field and continue her education.
“I look up to the example set by Jesus. I try to live my life based on the teachings and values of the Bible,” Ryan says. Her favorite book is “Little Women.” Ryan describes, “It tells the story of resilience and the strength and importance of family.”
Aimee is the daughter of Daniel and Nangcha Womack and a senior at Pleasant Grove High School. She looks up to her parents and grandparents because they have helped guide her through her childhood and helped her get where she is today.
If there is one thing Aimee loves, it is the art of dance. “My favorite book is Angelina Ballerina by Katherine Holabird. It single-handedly started my love and appreciation for dance. I would not be where I am today had I not read that book when I was little,” says Aimee.
Aimee is a four-year member of the Pleasant Grove High School Showstoppers and was able to serve one year as Junior Lieutenant and is currently serving as their Senior Captain. Aimee is a 16-year member of Joni’s Dance Center, also dancing on the competition dance team for 11 of those 16 years. Her future dance career includes signing on with the University of Central Arkansas’s Dance Team for the 2025-26 season.
Aime is a very motivated individual and loves to stay busy and active. Aside from her time as a dancer, Aimee has also participated in the National Honors Society, the National Technical Honors Society, and Keyettes. During her time as a student, she became a certified echocardiogram technician and will soon have her medical assistant certification. Aimee says, “My future dream job is to be a nurse. Although I am unsure what to specialize in, I know helping people is what I love to do!”
Aimee believes her motivation stems from God and that waking up each day is a true blessing. She is proud of her time as a Debbie Brower Photography Model. “I used to see my friends post pictures from their time as ‘Brower Girl.’ The program made sense because it’s my senior year, and I got to use the photos from each shoot. I love how it gives you four different photoshoots in all four seasons, so you can capture all the sweet moments throughout the year,” Aimee says. “If you are thinking about becoming a ‘Brower Girl,’ do it. It has given me confidence in presenting myself, and the photos always turn out great!”
The Texarkana Arkansas Police Department is proud to partner with Texarkana Emergency Center in an effort to remove unused and out of date prescription medicines from your homes.
•It is important to know that law enforcement is only interested in the removal of unused and/or outdated medications from the homes of our citizens.
•It matters not whose name is on the prescription, by whom it was prescribed, where it was prescribed, or where you reside.
•We stress that it makes no difference if you live in Texas or Arkansas.
•We take back all medications, no questions asked. You can remove the label if you desire but it’s not necessary.
•We ask that you do not deposit needles (sharps), inhalers, medication from businesses or clinics, ointments, lotions, liquids, aerosol cans, hydrogen peroxide, or thermometers.
One box has been placed behind the Bi State Justice Building at 100 N. State Line Ave., Texarkana, Arkansas and another outside the Texarkana Emergency Center, 4646 Cowhorn Creek Rd., Texarkana, Texas. These boxes are regularly checked and the contents are immediately packaged for destruction. If you would like to personally drop your medications off to law enforcement, you can at the Miller County Sheriff’s Office on East Street and Bi State Justice Building in Texarkana.

Beyond education savings, these plans can work for you – not just your kids.
Most commonly, 529s are known as a tool to save for college expenses tax-free, but even if you can cover college costs in other ways, don’t overlook how using these plans can benefit you. These investment vehicles can be used as a tax-efficient way to transfer wealth to future generations, reduce your estate taxes, and more.
Consider the goals you want to pursue with your estate and education planning. Do you want to minimize your taxable estate, provide for your loved ones’ education, or have flexibility to move the money? Once you know your goals, you can look deeper into your options.
Costing almost nothing to set up, 529 plans offer several benefits, including taxadvantaged growth, flexibility, and high contribution limits.
Contributions to the plan are made with after-tax dollars, but earnings grow tax free, and withdrawals do, too, if used for qualified education expenses such as tuition, fees, books, and college room and board.
You can use the funds to pay for the education of any eligible family member,
and you can change your beneficiary multiple times – so you can move money across generations without incurring taxes (as long as you don’t reach gift tax exclusions).
There’s no federal limit on the amount of money that can be contributed to a 529 plan, and many states offer additional tax benefits for contributions made to their own state’s plan. There’s also plenty of flexibility in how the money can be invested.
Scholarships can be used in conjunction with a 529 plan, and funds can be used toward graduate school or qualified apprenticeship programs to help students learn a trade and start their careers.
Much more than a college savings vehicle, 529 plans empower you with additional strategies that can work to your advantage – and help you make the most of your money now and in the future.
• Reduce your taxable estate. Contributions to 529 plans are considered gifts for federal estate tax and state estate tax purposes, meaning you can remove money from your taxable estate by contributing to a 529 plan.
• Roll a 529 plan over into a Roth IRA. Starting 2024, the SECURE 2.0 Act makes it possible to roll over unused 529 plan funds to a Roth IRA when owned by the beneficiary, turning education savings into retirement savings. The 529 plan must be active for more than 15 years, the funds must be in the account for at least five years, and up to $35,000 can be rolled over to the Roth IRA over the account beneficiary’s lifetime (annual contribution limits for IRAs still apply).
After moving unused 529 plan funds to a Roth IRA, you designate yourself as the beneficiary. After this, you can contribute money to the plan and invest it in a variety of investment options. When you retire, you can withdraw the money from the plan tax-free and use it to pay for qualified retirement expenses, such as living expenses, healthcare costs and travel.
• Take control over how your assets are distributed. You can change the beneficiary at any time, giving you control over how your assets are distributed after your death.
• Pay tuition in cash – to the 529 plan. Instead of writing a check to the institution, fund a 529 plan, which could allow you to take a deduction on that amount. Then pay the tuition straight from the plan. You can also fund tuition out of a Uniform Transfers to Minors Act (UTMA) transaction or trust account.
• Save for college expenses for multiple children or grandchildren. Open a single 529 plan and change the beneficiary as needed – making it easier for you to plan your annual contributions and distributions.
• Gift the money to a beneficiary. You can gift up to $18,000 per year per beneficiary (or $36,000 if you’re married) to a 529 plan without incurring gift taxes. This is a good way to help the beneficiary save for college without having to pay taxes on the gift.
• Gift money to family members or friends. A 529 empowers you to gift up to five years’ worth of annual gift tax exclusions in a single year without incurring gift taxes, so you could gift up to $90,000 per year per beneficiary or $180,000 per year per beneficiary if you’re married.
• Gift money to a donor advised fund without incurring gift taxes. A donor advised fund is a type of charitable giving account that allows you to make donations to charity and then recommend how the money is used over time. With these tax-saving options, even if you can afford
to pay cash for college doing so may not be in your best interest. Explore your options and consult with your financial advisor or estate planning attorney to uncover which strategy can help you make the most of this tax-advantaged investment vehicle.
• Consider what goals you want to pursue with your estate and education planning and if any of these strategies could benefit you and your family.
• Evaluate and compare 529 plans to determine the one that aligns best with your end goals.
• Talk to your financial advisor for perspectives on choosing a 529 plan.
Raymond James and its advisors do not offer tax or legal advice. You should discuss any tax or legal matters with the appropriate professional.
529 plans come with fees and expenses, and there is a risk they may lose money or underperform. Most states offer their own 529 programs, which may provide benefits exclusively for their residents. Please consider whether the state plan offers any tax or other benefits. Tax implications can vary significantly from state to state.
Unless certain criteria are met, Roth IRA owners must be 59½ or older and have held the IRA for five years before tax-free withdrawals are permitted. Additionally, each converted amount may be subject to its own five-year holding period. Converting a traditional IRA into a Roth IRA has tax implications. Investors should consult a tax advisor before deciding to do a conversion.
Donors are urged to consult their attorneys, accountants or tax advisors with respect to questions relating to the deductibility of various types of contributions to a Donor-Advised Fund for federal and state tax purposes.

2025 came in with a bang for many Texarkana residents.
I don’t think anyone in the ArklaTex was prepared for a 48-hour power outage on January 24, least of all me!
I was in an electrically powered recliner that was totally spread out! Guess what? It didn’t go down without power. Getting my 82-year-old body maneuvered around to roll out of my chair was tough! I’m glad there were no battery-powered cameras around! It would have gone viral on YouTube. There may be a chair battery backup, but I never dreamed this would happen! I missed that Girl Scout preparedness class!
It reminded me of the 2000 ice storm when electricity was out everywhere for nine days to three weeks. The entire city was blacked out, and there was no power, gasoline, or food available from stores with no power for several miles. It was scarier than the COVID-19 pandemic.
Many homes are all-electric; electricity is needed to blow the fans even with a gas heating unit. We had nothing except a small butane camp stove to keep warm and make hot water! It was an experience, but it got old quickly.
We corrected the no-heat problem and purchased a gas-powered fake log fireplace to be prepared for another outage. But guess what? Gas will not power a cell phone, which is a significant necessity today. We are happy that Edison’s invention of electricity gave us a light switch to shed light on the subject! So, the question: Could no one drive their all-electric vehicles?
With this bad news behind us, things are looking up for our area. There are many community events scheduled, and I hope you are involved in some of them.
A friend from my Tai Chi Class invited me to the Symphony with a guest pianist. I am so glad I went. If you have not experienced the Texarkana Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Phillip Mann, you are missing a treat. He is brilliant, the orchestra was the best I have heard, and the dynamics of the instruments were amazing. We are fortunate to have such excellent talent in our town.
The year started with a bang, and I can’t wait to see what the rest of 2025 will bring, as the days are clicking off quickly. We are already in March; before we know it, Christmas will be here.
Stay safe, keep a smile on your face, and make our world a better place.

It’s that time of year again: cold and windy, so let me share a not-so-secret secret. Fish don’t know or care about the cold. Since they aren’t warm-blooded like us, they take on the temperature of the water. As the water cools, a fish’s activity level and digestion slow down, so they don’t need or want to eat as much as when it’s warm. That’s why jigs and other bottombumping baits work well when fished slowly. But there’s another technique that works pretty well too: using a crankbait and cranking it as fast as you can turn the handle. The fish that bite aren’t hungry; they strike out of anger. Bass can be kind of testy and will hit out of spite just to kill.
Another effective tactic is to fish a jig or another bottom bumper by jerking it off the bottom with a firm tug of the rod and then letting it fall back. The strike will often come on the fall, so be ready to set the hook, even though the next jerk up will do it for you. Try these two novel methods to help you catch some fish in the winter waters.
It’s the sixth annual Dancing with our Stars held at Northridge Country Club. Ticks are $125/person and include a delicious dinner, dessert, drinks and access to the silent auction. All proceeds benefit the Temple Memorial Pediatric Center.
