KEEPING IT REAL From The Publisher
I love this time of year. Decorations, festivities, friends...and oh the food! I’ve been preparing myself for at least the past two months for all the goodies that I plan on sampling during this Christmas season! I absolutely love spending time with my family, including my fur babies. They make my life so joyful. If I am sad, lonely, happy or glad, I have not only my family to look forward to talking to and seeing, but my fur babies are always so happy to see me that it is hard to not be happy. I hope you enjoy reading about our new shelter director, Charles Lokey. He is making such a difference in the lives of the animals at the shelter. Please take a moment, if you have one, to volunteer, donate, adopt, or foster an animal. You never know who will be more rescued -- you or the pet you help. Merry Christmas to you and yours!

Charles Lokey, with Vivian, who was recently adopted.
Vision A leader’s job is to look into the future and see the organization not as it is, But as it can become...
WORDS BY ANNE FRUGE
Charles Lokey has always had a “knack” for dealing with animals, a talent he became conscious of while growing up on his parents’ farm in Stuttgart, Arkansas. Surrounded by rice, cotton, soybeans and cattle, Charles learned many of the skills that proved useful in later careers as an irrigation worker, an animal control officer and now as the new director of the Texarkana Animal Shelter. “I applied for this job because I was hoping I could make a difference here,” Charles says. “I knew going into it that it is a hard job. The shelter director has to make a lot of decisions that people would not make and see a lot of things people never see, but I do love animals, and I want to help as many as I can.” After graduation from Carlisle High School, Charles knew that his family
could not send him to college. However, his dad had served as a Marine in Korea, his grandparents fought in World War II, and he had many uncles and cousins who had served in Vietnam. So, Charles enlisted in the Army where he served off and on for 12 years as a medic. “I knew it was my time to serve,” Charles said. “While in the Army, I felt like I belonged. I liked the structure and the field I was in. Our group had a very close-knit relationship.”
Charles says. “The Army gave me an appreciation for our country that I never had before. I saw what we have in comparison to other people in the world. What we take for granted is nothing more than a dream for most people. To be able to express your beliefs through your right to vote and make your choice is a gift. We have a right to disagree and not to have to worry about someone coming in and dragging our families out in the night. We are blessed in this country.”
After years of service, Charles moved back to Arkansas in 1994 and started his own business in landscape and irrigation. Because of his experiences on the farm, Charles was able to work both residentially and on farms’ large irrigation pivot systems. However, after September 11, Charles went back to the Army. “No one messes with my country,”
When Charles returned home, the recession in the economy made restarting his business profitably an improbability, so he took a job at a small police department in Mayflower. Charles did some part time patrolling and worked as an animal control officer. Then, he received a call from Conway Animal Welfare offering him a position with December 2014

them. He worked there for four years, and in that time, he was faced with many challenges where knowledge from his childhood on the farm proved to be extremely useful. “I’ve always liked animals and seemed to have a knack with them,” Charles says. “I’ve worked with domestic animals, wildlife and livestock. A lot of people don’t know how to handle cows that have gotten out or horses that are spooked and running. But, I knew from the farm: get in front of the head cow. You’ve got to stop the head cow to stop a stampede.”
Another time, Charles got a call from a woman who swore there was a “Mexican fighting bull” in her garden. Charles arrived to see a longhorn from the ranch down the hill standing in the woman’s plants. After he relieved the woman’s fears, he said to the cow, “Come on, momma. Let’s go home,” and she followed him down the hill and back through the gap in the fence.
A few years ago, Charles and his wife looked for an opportunity to move away from Conway and closer to Texas. Charles’ wife, Evelyn, had worked as a nurse for the State of Arkansas for 29 years was ready to retire. One time, Charles got a call She wanted to live closer from a panicked woman who to her family that is mostly said she had an unbelievably Staff of Animal Care & Adoption Center: Front L-R: Bertha Curry, based in Dallas. He started in his new position on November 5, 2014. “Things have been definitely hectic settling in,” Charles says. “When I walked in on that first day, there were a lot of things that had to be fixed and had to be fixed right now. But, we are improving. We have a vision and a goal for this shelter, and we are improving more and more every day.”

It’s our job to spread the word about responsible pet ownership. It’s much like a farmer who has cattle; those animals depend on that rancher or farmer to provide for them. Anytime you ask a student what their favorite thing about Texarkana College is, you are sure to get the same response: the faculty. “We are incredibly lucky to have faculty members who make a real impact on our students, and if you talk to graduates, you will see that the impact lasts for a lifetime,” explains Traci Pitman (Design & Creative Services Coordinator, Office of Institutional Advancement & Public Relations, Texarkana College). This November marked two years since Bowie County citizens voted to become part of the Texarkana College District and in efforts to thank the voters for their support, TC wanted to show them a little behind the scenes of the amazing instructors and students that are a part of their school. “To do that,” Pitman says, “we turned to our students. They tell the story better than we ever could because they are living proof of these instructors’ impact.” Thus began the #FaveTCProf contest. Students were asked to snap a “selfie” with their favorite instructor and then write a short description of why that person was their favorite. Students could submit their entries via email, by posting them to the TC Facebook page or by tagging their Instagram or Twitter posts with #FaveTCProf. “We loved having students participate on social media because their posts did double duty,” exclaims Pitman, “not only were they participating in the contest, but they also showed their friends and our fans what a huge impact these instructors are making in students’ lives every day. Each day for a week, a prize was given to a different student who submitted a great “selfie,” and they were featured on the college’s Facebook page. TC is also featuring the submissions in ads throughout their service area. But those were not the only benefits of the contest. “This encouraged some really positive interactions and conversations between our students and instructors,” Pitman says. It was both surprising and touching to the professors to see that students had chosen them, and “it was really great to see this create such a positive buzz around camps,” Pitman explains.
David Gafford with winner Necee Woods. “David Gafford is my favorite teacher because he doesn’t hold anything back. He also tells it how it is, and that is really what makes him my favorite teacher. Out of all my teachers throughout my school life, he is by far the best one, and I wouldn’t trade him for any other psychology teacher.”
Winner Tiffaine Scott with Helen Frazior. Mrs. Helen Frazior is the best professor at Texarkana College. She has been teaching for years and still has a passion and love for her students. Our first class meeting, she expressed she was a cancer survivor. I thank God every Tuesday night he helped her to fight one of the hardest battles of her life. She was told at a young age she wouldn’t be able to go to college! She proved a few people wrong. She is true inspiration to myself and others!
Cindy Ramage with winner Cavan Bilyeu. “Mrs. Ramage is always upbeat, smiling, and expects the very best from her student (because she gives the very best of herself as a teacher and mentor.) She also got me involved in the Texarkana College Debate League and is the only professor who has given a class breakfast on finals day. Now that’s awesome!”

The University of Arkansas Texarkana is again under construction and that is exciting. From its first class in August of 2012, the U of A Texarkana has worked to better serve the needs of Miller and surrounding county students. The College focused its initial class offerings around general studies and is now expanding those programs to meet the growing needs of students and workforce training.
programs of study, U of A Texarkana is currently expanding by adding a 3 story, 20,000 square foot educational structure. This building, which is scheduled to be completed in 2015, is uniquely designed to accommodate the addition of Health Professions as well as Technical and Industrial programs which have been requested by students and industry partners in the region.
Prior to the opening of the Texarkana Campus, the college experienced a fluctuating number of Miller County students registering for classes in Hope. In 2012, with the opening of the Texarkana Campus, enrollment of Miller County students increased to 77 and the College’s share of the Miller County seniors attending college rate increased from .55 percent to 19.3 percent. Growth has continued for U of A Texarkana with the Fall 2013 to the Fall 2014 headcount enrollment increasing 17 percent.
A partnership between U of A Texarkana and the University of Arkansas at Little Rock (UALR) has been developed to bring additional support from the University of Arkansas System to Miller County, by providing an opportunity to complete a Bachelor’s Degree from UALR on the U of A Texarkana campus. This partnership will be fully implemented with the completion of the new educational space in 2015.

Texas A&M University-Texarkana’s Campus Activities Board Wins Big at APCA Conference Texas A&M University Texarkana’s Campus Activites Board officers recently attended the Association for the Promotion of Campus Activities (APCA) South Central Regional Programming Conference in Houston, Texas. Before the conference, students were able to nominate different events, students, programming boards and associates for awards to be presented at the conference. “The Regional Awards are huge,” exclaimed Celeste McNiel (Assistant Director of Student Life). The region consists of New Mexico, Texas, Oklahoma, Arkansas, Louisianna and Mississippi. The Regional Conference hosts well over 50 schools
and has more than 400 students in attendance. There are two award categories at the conference, Graphics Competition and Regional Awards. The Graphics competition allows activities boards to submit materials for several categories. These categories include printed advertising, t-shirts, novelty items and Facebook page. “The Regional Award categories are a much bigger deal,” says McNiel. The categories are Student Programmer of the Year, Event of the Year, Organization of the Year, Advisor of the Year and Associate (booking agency) of the Year. The winner of each category of Regional Awards is then considered for the National Award.
“We are performing consistently well in our region,” explains McNiel proudly, “Dustin Nix was named Student Programmer of the Year last year.” TAMU-T Campus Activities Board also won the National Award for Campus Event of the Year in 2012. This years group stepped up the game a bit and took home not one, but two Regional Awards. “This is the first time we have ever taken two Regional Awards at a single conference,” says McNiel. This years awards are as follows: Graphics Competition - Printed Advertising - 2nd Place Grraphics Competition - Facebook Page - 1st Place South Central Region Event of the Year - De-Stress for Finals Day 2014 South Central Region Student Programmer of the Year - Amber Spence
The students that attended are: Dustin Nix, Misty Jade Ruth, Kris London, Garrett Wilson, Chesney Spears, Marina Garza and Amber Spence. “We really do have an exceptional group of students that represent us at this conference and provides programming for our campus,” explains McNiel. 28

Aspiring Teachers Enjoy a
Day of Authentic Exploration WORDS BY DEBORA SHIDEMANTLE
On Saturday, October 11, 2014, thirty-two Texas A&M University-Texarkana students from the main campus and the Northeast Texas Community College (NTCC) campus boarded busses and headed out to the Hunt House at TexAmericas. While waiting for the rain to subside, Beth Corbin, TexAmericas Forestry and Hunting Manager, treated the students to an overview of the historical surroundings of the Red River Army Depot and the TexAmericas. Along with learning the historical facts of the location, the students participated in several scientific discovery lessons. The lessons, led by Corbin and Stacey Smith, a biology instructor at A&MTexarkana, exposed the future teachers to the concepts of leaf identification, dendrochronology, forest regeneration, renewable resource management, succession, life cycles of plants and animals, as well as predator and prey relationships, specifically of the animals that exist locally. Laura Currey and Debora Shidemantle, educational methods instructors from A&M-Texarkana, guided the class as they drew parallels from the information presented to the Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS). Once the rain stopped, the group headed out into the field. Corbin led the students to an area near the Hunt 32

House that provided natural examples, which exemplified earlier discussions. TAMUT Students were able to see the application of the science curriculum using the natural world as a resource for teaching concepts that are difficult for elementary school teachers to teach to students within the classroom walls. The university students were then encouraged to use the discussion information in conjunction with the TEKS to locate and identify additional naturally occurring locations. The students collaborated with each other and the instructors to verify their correlations of the material as well as the teaching strategies that would be used when working with elementary students during the teaching process. Following the field trip, the students enrolled in the educational methods courses will use the information gathered during their day of scientific adventures to generate cross curricular project based lesson plans that they will be able to implement in their student teaching semesters. These lesson plans will

reach across the science TEKS and integrate skills required of elementary students in other core areas (mathematics, language arts, and social studies). The lesson plans not only served to actively engage teacher candidates in authentic learning activities, but also build their repertoire of experiences to further prepare them to implement this type of lesson in their future public school careers. Even though the activities transpired within a single day, planning for the activity unfolded during summer meetings between Smith and Shidemantle on the Texarkana campus. Later, planning meetings incorporated the assistance of Currey and Corbin. The group of instructors first evaluated the K-6 science Texas Essential Knowledge and Skills (TEKS) to determine which required areas in nature to illustrate science education. The group of instructors then took this information out to the field where Corbin assisted in locating areas on the TexAmericas campus that would allow the students to visualize the science curriculum in a natural setting. It was with this careful planning and support from the Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Dean Don Peterson and College of Education and Liberal Arts (CELA) Dean Glenda Ballard that both sections of the educational methods class, one from Texarkana and the other from NTCC, enjoyed a day of discovery learning at TexAmericas Center. The education department plans to continue designing and providing authentic learning practices for pre-service teachers in hopes that the students will implement similar authenticity in their own lesson plans when they become teachers. Debora Shidemantle, M.Ed., is an Instructor of Education (Clinical Faculty), at Texas A&M University-Texarkana.

DeU ALLINONE Active Serum™ is an effective combination of highly pure and natural ingredients, perfectly balanced to work synergistically to enhance the beneficial effects of each individual ingredient to optimize the results of treatment. DeU ALLINONE Active Serum was originally created and developed for cosmetic surgeons as a noninvasive alternative to filler and Botox injections. The immediate and intense smoothing, firming and lifting effect is due to a unique, patented blend of hyaluronic acid, Nannochloropsis Oculata (marine algae or seaweed, harvested deep in the Atlantic Ocean), plus other plant extracts.
Introducing an incredible Anti-aging ALLINONE Skin Care Serum just in time for Christmas!
D
eU ALLINONE Active Serum™ Ingredients
• The first group is designed to have an effect similar in action to that achieved by Botox. The main component is a complex built around a micro-seaweed, Nannochloropsis Oculata, the extract of which is combined, using biotechnology, with a balanced group of polysaccharides. This tripeptide complex has been demonstrated to relax the muscles that produce wrinkles by blocking the nicotinic acetylcholine receptor. It also has a pronounced and immediate tightening effect on the skin and underlying connective tissue. • The second group of ingredients acts on the surface layer of the skin like a filler, using protein hydrolysates, such as hydrolyzed wheat gluten (HWG), to form a permeable film that evaporates with a tightening effect that visibly reduces fine lines. • The third group of components incorporates the following, Hyaluronic Acid of high molecular weight, which gives excellent surface hydration and simultaneously fills deep lines. Saccharomyces lysate, yeast of low molecular weight produced by biotechnology, is able to penetrate the deeper layers of the skin where it stimulates cell regeneration, and glycosaminoglycans play a deep moisturizing role. The active ingredients in the DeU ALLINONE Active Serum™ penetrate the skin easily, with results visible immediately. Within the first hour of application, the serum forms a permeable derma-elastic film leaving skin looking radiant and feeling smooth and supple. Following application, active ingredients immediately begin to strengthen facial muscles and reduce wrinkles. The full effects are visible in about three weeks. Use of this patented formula has also show remarkable improvements to neck firmness and smoothness of the chest and hands. The synergistic action of the complex ingredients used, combined with the presence of Pygeum africanum, Cantella asiatica, Aloe vera, chamomile extract, ginseng and Hamamelis virginiana, contributes to a reversible inhibition of muscle contractions, thereby strengthening facial features and reducing wrinkles and expression lines.

Kicking the Cold Now that old man winter is here, with a vengeance, we need to adapt our mind-set and our clothes to a new reality. First, let’s address that claim that more clothes are going to be required. Don’t forget your head and neck! We lose lots of body heat through the neck and top of the head, so cover those up. Hands are next. They can get COLD, so a pair of thin gloves will help keep them from completely freezing off.

Now, that bait issue is up for debate. You can make a real good case for something down on the bottom like a jig or lizard or, if you want to be the rebel type, a crank bait retrieved as fast as possible might be the way to go. But my go to bait is a big spinnerbait. Not a 1/4 or a 3/8 ounce -- no, I like a hefty 3/4 ounce or a full meal deal 1 ounce. Fish the spinnerbait slow just off bottom or just above cover. Something in a
bream pattern might just be the ticket. Or you could follow the crowd an chunk a red rattletrap all day and see what happens. Just remember, the real trick to fishing this time of year is to stay warm or reasonably close to it. From 20k feet above Austin, Texas, good fishing!

Prince, Pauper or In-between: How Long Can You Live on Your Savings? If you lost your job, could you cover your bills? When consumers were asked that question in a survey this year by RetailMeNot, the discount coupon site, nearly half (48%) confessed that their savings would last for just one month. At the other extreme, those with an emergency fund (52%) estimated it would tide them over for eight months without any additional income. The root of this great savings divide may be simple: Many people just don’t know how to save. And, almost half (49%) of the surveyed consumers lacked confidence in their understanding of their personal finances.
investments.
But learning how to save isn’t difficult. “I started very young with my kids—about 10 or 12—teaching them the value of saving money now to prepare for their future goals,” says Michael, a physician at the University of South Florida. He’s used his financial knowledge to advise healthcare organizations, as well as his family, in the importance of saving. “You don’t have to be rich to save,” says Michael, noting that anyone with an income can stash away a substantial cushion—if they follow some common-sense advice.
Pay yourself first with every paycheck by contributing to your savings account. The easiest way to do so is with automatic deductions.
Here are six tips to pursue a stress-free financial future: 1. CREATE A BUDGET Track your expenses, figure out how much you need to cover essentials and identify where you can make cuts. For example, by not eating out as frequently, you might be able to save $30 or more a week. 2. PRIORITIZE YOUR SAVINGS With your budget in place, calculate how much is left for savings, and set priorities. Stockpile an emergency fund that covers bills for at least six months – or, better yet, have two to three years worth in cash or short-term 64

Make regular retirement fund contributions. Be sure to take advantage of an employer’s matching contributions—otherwise, you’re throwing money away. Save for your kids’ college tuition. Sock away money for a vacation, entertainment and other splurges. 3. MAKE SAVINGS A HABIT
4. CAPITALIZE ON COMPOUNDED INTEREST Albert Einstein called it the “eighth wonder of the world.” Put your money in accounts paying interest, leave it there and watch your money potentially grow. Michael convinced his children to start saving with an example like this one: If a 20-year-old saves $30 each week, that adds up to $1,560 a year. With a 6% annual return, just that one year in savings will grow to $21,472 by the time they’re 65. If you continue to make annual contributions of $1,560 for the next 45 years, you would have the potential for a grand total of $373,265.47 minus fees and other investment-related charges. Keep in mind that your results will vary. The hypothetical rate of return used here isn’t guaranteed, and the example isn’t representative of a specific situation. And remember, all investing involves risk, including the potential loss of principal. 5. PAY OFF CREDIT CARD DEBT EVERY MONTH Paying high interest rates on your balance is money you could otherwise be investing. 6. SAVE YOUR RAISE Painful as it may seem, one way late starters can play catch-up is to put most of that extra money into savings. For Michael, a lifetime of disciplined savings will come full circle when he retires this summer. As he travels the country in his energyefficient camper van, the frugal doctor will be living out his motto: Worry now, relax later. Start planning now. Work with your financial advisor to plan for your financial future.

nice to meet you.
Visit texarkanaanimalleague.org to learn how you can forever change an animal’s life as well as your own.
A Family Affair WORDS BY AMBER GLASS, TEXARKANA ANIMAL LEAGUE
I always knew that one day I would be involved with animal rescue. I wasn’t sure how or when, but I knew my love for animals would lead me to something big. Ever since I was a little girl I’d wanted to save every dog or cat I came across. But I didn’t have my own official pet until I was 20, a cat named Fefe, who is now almost 14 years old. When my husband, Wayne, and I married we didn’t know a lot about rescues. So we bought a couple of fur babies and we were living our happily ever after. But one day I decided I wanted to have a real baby. Our world was turned upside down when we started fostering children. We fostered 17 children over a 4 year span and adopted 2 beautiful kiddos - Chloe, who is 11, and Quinn, who is now 3. And once again, we were living our dream. We moved back to Texarkana about a year ago. While looking for a house I kept in mind the fact that I wanted a house with some land. I knew “in the future” that I wanted to get involved in animal rescue and I thought having the room would be beneficial when I got ready. After a few months of living here, I once again became restless. I felt like I needed to do something and rescue instantly came to mind. Although this 78

was something I planned on doing later in life, I thought “why not start now?” I began following local rescue groups on Facebook, trying to understand how it worked. One of the things all the rescue groups needed was FOSTER HOMES! Instantly I loved that idea. I thought, “I’ve fostered children, I can handle fostering dogs.” My husband was very supportive. He fenced our entire 3 acres so the dogs would have lots of room to play. I contacted Little Paws Rescue to see if I could help and pretty soon we got our first foster! She was a beagle/greyhound mix named Audrey. Even though she was very sweet and a great dog, I wondered if she would ever get adopted. She was a bigger dog, a different looking mix, not small and fluffy. We had had her for two months, (she had been in rescue much longer than that,) when, low and behold, Audrey got adopted! A gentlemen saw her at a Petsmart adoption event and loved her. This adoption taught me so much. First, there IS someone out there for every dog! Secondly, for me, this was a very different kind of fostering experience. With children I had always been devastated when they left our home, often crying myself to sleep at night. But with Audrey’s adoption I was truly ELATED for her! I was so excited about the life she was going to have!
I was hooked and knew this was how I was going to help. I wanted to be the middle man between the rescue and a forever home. After that experience fostering dogs became a family affair. My daughter Chloe couldn’t be more like me if I had given birth to her! Her love for animals shines through in all she does. She goes with me to adoption events to help with the dogs, volunteers at the shelter bathing puppies, and recently had a hot chocolate/ coffee stand at our garage sale raising $40 for the shelter. It’s a wonderful bonding experience for us. Wayne helps by building dog houses, putting up fence, or taking dogs to the vet for me. I couldn’t do it without him! Even my 3 year old, Quinn, is a huge help. He plays with the dogs and shows all of them love and attention. They are learning very valuable social skills by interacting with him. Even though this was something I alone wanted to do, my family has become involved and it’s been something we can all do together and feel good about! I started fostering for the Texarkana Animal League as well. At this time I was spending a lot of time at the shelter trying to keep up with some of the dogs there in case I could foster them. That’s when I met Hazel, a large mixed breed dog. While walking through the shelter checking out all of the cages, her face caught my attention. Her eyes spoke volumes. It was the saddest face I had ever seen and I could not stop thinking about her. I went by every few days to check on her and after a few weeks I got the “ok” from TAL to pull Hazel from the shelter and bring her into rescue! I was so excited to go get her! I can’t explain the feeling, but it’s a very special fostering experience when you get to give an animal their “freedom ride” out of the shelter and into your home!! I was on the verge of tears all the way home. Once Hazel settled in she could not stop showering me with love. I got a million kisses and she laid her head in my lap all night just wanting to be petted. Her eyes were no longer sad; they were hopeful and happy. Fostering a cat or dog is such a wonderful thing and there is always a need for more foster homes! I’ve heard so many times “Oh I couldn’t let them go. I would want to keep them all.” That can be true. I have adopted one of my foster pups
because she became so very special to me that I couldn’t let her go. So “foster failure” can happen and there’s nothing wrong with that! But most of the time I am honestly happy when they get adopted. Because I’ve seen where they were, how lost or abused they had been, I am able to see how far they’ve come. So, to see that process come full circle - to have one of my pups find its forever family is the ultimate reward. I love what I do. YOU could do the same. YOU could save lives. YOU could make a difference :)

The Texarkana Humane Society is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to re-homing orphaned animals, promoting the human-animal bond, preventing animal cruelty, educating children and adults about responsible pet ownership and preventing pet overpopulation. In order to reduce the number of unwanted animals and the euthanization of them at the shelter people need to spay/neuter their pets. The Texarkana Humane Society has a program to help individuals do this and urge everyone to get involved and tell your neighbor, family, and friends to be responsible and do their part in putting a stop to this problem here in our city. Have them contact us regarding our program. Call 903 838-6334 and we will be glad to help you.
