KEEPING IT REAL From The Publisher
Dogs, Home & Garden, and Fashion! What an exciting way to start off the spring! This issue is jam packed with lots of exciting information! First, most of you know that I am very involved with animal welfare in our community. As chair of the Advisory Committee for the Animal Care and Adoption Center, and as President of the Texarkana Friends of the Shelter, I am actively involved in helping the animals that can’t help themselves. The Fur Ball is all about giving back to these homesless friends. I have been pleasantly surprised by the kindness of many people by opening their hearts, and their checkbooks, to help us turn around what was a really bad situation just last summer. One of the first people to do that were Maurice and Vicky Orr. They are absolutely amazing people! I have know both of them for many, many years; Vicky and I actually worked together many moons ago. However, our lives went in different directions and we hadn’t been in touch for a while. How exciting to read about how both Mo and Vicky are enjoying each other and life! And how wonderful to have them as huge supporters of our efforts to improve the shelter. The Fur Ball is going to be an amazing event on March 28th, at Silvermoon on Broad. Please consider a sponsorship or ticket purchase. The money you give will go straight back to the shelter improvements! I am a huge home improvement fan -- not that I actually want to improve a lot, but I LOVE watching and reading about people remodeling and changing things in their home. The Home & Garden Show is March 7-8, at the Texarkana Convention Center. What better way to start off spring by doing some spring cleaning and improvements! Please take the time to go see what you can do to make your home the best possible place to live! And of course, we have our quarterly fashion spread! OMG! The clothes were AMAZING! I absolutely love all the colors and designs -- and this time we added a wedding feature! So for those of you who are going to weddings or are in a wedding, check out this month’s fashion spread! There is sure to be something you will love. As I sit here writing this, it is below freezing outside. I hope that March brings warmer weather! Growing up in southern Alabama, I HATE wearing warm clothes! I do not like layers, I do not like heavy shoes, I do not like covering up! I do like sitting on the beach, with a book in hand, listening to the waves come in, and enjoying the peacefulness and solitude. If they would just let me take my dogs it would be perfect! I guess I will have to buy my own place to get my dogs down there. That’s something to work on in the future! For now, I hope our wonderful northeast Texas weather improves! Life goes on... May God bless you in the New Year!

GIVING BACK
WORDS BY ANNE FRUGE
Maurice “Mo” and Vicki Orr have always loved animals. Mo has owned many Labradors over the years that he loves to take bird hunting, and Vicki has always had a soft spot for both cats and dogs. At their home in Texarkana, they have Sweet Pea, a schnauzer that Mo affectionately calls “Knothead,” Maize, a labrador that even at age 11 still loves to go bird hunting, and two rescued cats that are now answering to Cheech and Chong. “Vicki is the kindest person I know,” Mo says. “Even the reclusive cats love her. They come running like dogs when she calls for them!” Mo and Vicki met later in life, after both of their previous spouses had passed. Though both had grown up in the Texarkana area and graduated from Arkansas High, they were 12 years apart, and only knew each other through acquaintances. Vicki’s late husband worked for Mo at Orr, and they had seen each other at community and company events. It was
Mo’s baby, Maize a mutual friend, Holt Parsons, that finally encouraged Mo to call Vicki. Mo made the call, and they went on their first date to Timothy’s in January of 2009. “There is a funny story from our first date,” Vicki says. “Mo came to pick me up and when I got in his suburban, I thought, ‘Wow, it really
stinks in here,’ but of course, I did not say anything. We started on our way and there was a rustling in back. Mo said, ‘Maize lay down.’ I turned to look and got a large lick right in the face!! As it turned out, Maize almost always traveled with him wherever he went.” On that first date, Mo and Vicki talked for so long, they looked up and the restaurant was empty. “They finally had to dim the lights for us to leave,” Mo says. “From then on, we just clicked. By the time you get to our age, you just know when something is right.” Mo and Vicki got married in November of 2009 in Carmel, California, on the beach in blue jeans and white sweaters. “We both felt pretty lucky to find each other,” Vicki said. “It’s hard to meet someone in those later years, and we both felt so happy to have each other.” In their married life together, the couple loves to travel. They’ve been to New York, France, Italy, and are planning a trip to March 2015

Hawaii this spring with the mutual friend who brought them together, Holt Parsons and his wife, Teensie. “I love the fact that Mo has so many friends all over,” Vicki says. “He’s just so interesting. I love to hear all his friends’ stories and see how much they love him. We laugh a lot; we just love being with each other.” When the couple is not traveling, they love to be at home. On a normal day, they love drinking coffee and watching the Today Show together. Mo walks the dogs, and then the couple goes to eat lunch together. They like to find local attractions like a nearby eagle’s nest they had read about to go see. When they go to their cabin at Yellow Creek, Mo takes the dogs riding in the Ranger through the woods. Currently, they are in the process of renovating their new home. “It’s so stressful sometimes when you are moving or renovating, but Mo is just so patient with me and with our animals,” Vicki says. “That’s something I just love about him. The new house has more land, so the dogs are going to love it, and we put out a deer feeder so we can see the deer up around the house.” Vicki said that she began to hear about the needs at the Animal Care and Adoption Center in Texarkana, and she saw a lot of positive changes brought about by
Texarkana Friends of the Shelter as they worked to give the shelter a face-lift and make it a more community friendly place to look for a new pet. “We have always loved animals, and when we saw the
positive changes being made, we wanted to donate something toward that and help keep the ball rolling,” Vicki says. “I also hope to become a volunteer there.” Vicki and Mo’s selfless donation to a cause close to their hearts actually helped
Texarkana Friends of the Shelter get their first large fundraiser off of the ground. The first annual Fur Ball will be held March 28 at Silvermoon on Broad Street, and Mo and Vicki will be this year’s honorary chairs of the event. “Vicki and Mo were in one of the first groups to walk through the shelter when the Animal Care and Adoption Center advisory committee to the city of Texarkana, Arkansas, was first started,” Debbie Brower, Chairperson of the advisory committee for the Animal Care and Adoption Center and President of Texarkana Friends of the Shelter says. “They witnessed the many issues we had to overcome and said, ‘We want to help.’ Since then, they’ve kept up with what we are doing, and when we planned this fundraiser, we thought they would be perfect chairpeople for the event, even though they never seek recognition for their efforts. It’s great for people to see that there are good people that are well-known in our community who support our efforts to make the shelter a better place.” The ball’s theme this year is “Dogs, Cats and Cowboy Hats” and dress attire will be western cocktail (black tie optional). There will also be music from the Soultones, delicious food and a silent

Cheech auction. Tickets are only $75 a piece and there are sponsorship opportunities still available. Texarkana Friends of the Shelter has also been named a 501 (c) (3) which means that all donations and sponsorships are tax-deductible. All the money raised from this event will go right back to the Animal Care and Adoption Center to fund spay and neuter programs, animal sponsorships to assist in adoptions and the renovation of the facility. “We want the shelter to be a nice place to adopt these homeless and unwanted pets,” Debbie says. “Recently we
Sissy have been able to re-do the cat room and remove all of the kennels. The cats will be free to roam in that area. We also repainted the entire front office. Eventually, we would love to have a new building. We could look into building or refurbishing another property. We are also looking into applying for several grants that are now open to us as a 501 (c) (3).” Mo and Vicki are excited about the event and the awareness it will bring to the community. “We can’t wait to see all the people there to support the shelter,” Vicki says. “We hope it will open people’s eyes to

Cheech & Chong the fact that we need to take care of these animals. This is a worthwhile and important cause.” The couple just recently lost Sissy, an eight-year-old Dachshund mix that Vicki rescued at 7 weeks old. Mo and Vicki said the loss really affected them as their pets are “family.” “Most people these days have pets, and when you see them, it really makes you think about all the ones that don’t have homes,” Mo says. “How sad is it that so many animals don’t have a place to live; it’s always gotten me.”

A Degree: It’s About Having Choices WORDS BY LISA MYERS
How long does it take to complete your degree? If you’re Lisa Oexman, it takes you about a year. Lisa walked into A&M-Texarkana in August of 2014 and completed her degree in December of 2015. That’s 15 months, and while that may seem like a lot of time, it really isn’t when you consider how many months – years even – that most adult students spend contemplating a return to school. Lisa was no different and

had spent years thinking about going back to school and earning her bachelor’s degree, but the impetus that transformed her desire into reality was her daughter, Ariel, going off to college. All of the sudden, Lisa had some time on her hands, and she wasn’t about to spend it on the couch watching television! That’s when she decided to pick up her 51 hours of earned college credit and pay the university a visit. Those 51 hours were hard fought for. Even though Lisa graduated 2nd in her class from Spring Hill High School and was awarded a full scholarship to Henderson State University, she did not desire to go to school right after graduation. Her dream was to join the United States Marine Corps, but her mom wouldn’t sign the papers allowing 17-year-old Lisa to join. Left with only the academic path to travel, Lisa went to school, but her heart was set on another path. As would be expected, Lisa did not perform to her usual standard and by the time her freshman year was over, she had lost her scholarship. The other bit of news was that she had turned 18 and no longer needed parental consent to join the Marines, and so she did just that – and she loved it. Lisa’s time in the service brings a smile to her face today as she describes everything from basic training to moving from South Carolina to California. She thrived on the camaraderie, challenge, and pride she found in the armed services, traits she still looks for in organizations today. After spending just over 4 years in the service, Lisa moved to Texarkana and went to work for the Federal Bureau of Prisons. Soon after, she married and began building a family. In addition to the new job and family, Lisa also attended college for a little over a year, but the schedule demands proved to be too difficult. She explains, “I tried to pick up some classes during that time, but I just couldn’t keep it going. My hat’s off to women who can juggle a job, family, and school because I couldn’t do it. I tried, but I couldn’t.” And so time passed along, and Lisa lived and enjoyed life, but there was always that nagging thought – “I need to finish my degree.” Sometimes, the thought would lead her to look up the available degrees at A&M-Texarkana to see what all would be required to earn a bachelor’s degree, specifically, how much time would it take. Her exploration, however, would always stop just short of executing a plan. At the end of the day, Lisa would pack the dream away for another time. Several years passed with Lisa’s dream put on hold, but then she began hearing about a degree that provided a way to earn
college credit for what you already know, the Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences (BAAS). Some of her co-workers at the prison told her about the BAAS and how many hours of college credit they were able to earn through the program, some of them up to 48 hours in credit. That, along with the recent departure of Ariel for college, was just enough to close the deal for Lisa. She was going to college. Decision made. Even after learning that the BAAS requires 120 hours of coursework, and she wasn’t even at the half way mark, Lisa’s resolve did not dampen. The marine in her was not about to walk away from this challenge. As is true for most non-traditional college students, the first class is always the hardest to walk into. Lisa was pleasantly surprised to find a handful of adult students in Dr. Tom Wagy’s U.S. History I class, and it didn’t take her long to realize that the most persistent and committed students in the class came from that handful. It also didn’t take long for Lisa to realize that her academic skills were still in great shape. She earned very high marks on her first essay, something she definitely did not expect after the professor warned that almost everyone makes an F on their first one. Seeing the grade on her paper, she thought with a pretty big smile on her face, “Gee, I can still do this!” Even though her history class had quite a few adult students in it, that was not the case for her speech class, and Lisa was sure she would hate it because of that fact. She was wrong. In fact, she couldn’t have been more wrong. Today, Lisa says her speech class was her favorite out of all the ones she has taken over the last year and that the reason she enjoyed it so much was because of the students in it. “I loved that class – maybe not so much for the content – because of the students. They were just wonderful. They always included me, listened to what I had to say, asked my opinion. I never felt like I was intruding or anything like that. I was part of the class with them, maybe like their mom, I just really loved it.” Lisa does admit, however, that she became a professional “Googler” because she kept having to look up the meaning of acronyms the traditional students were using. Her knowledge in that area was limited to simple LOLs and such, but now she is a real pro and can carry on a conversation with the best of traditionals! Today, Lisa has her degree in hand, and when I ask her what is different now from before earning her BAAS, she simply says, “I have choices now. Before, I didn’t. There was one path, the one I was on, and that was it. My life has possibilities now. I’m so glad that I realized a little over a year ago that I was going to have to do something more, if I wanted to do something more with my life. I did it, and now I have choices.”

One Front Too Many Last month we had the first BFL tournament of the 2015 year. It was during a period of cold fronts coming in one after the other. This can be one of the most dreaded times to fish -- the bass are sullied up and really don’t want to bite, move, breath, or anything else. Water temps change daily and warming can’t keep up with cooling. What’s a guy to do? Well, the only surefire advice is to start out deep and work your way shallow during the day, keep your bait wet and, most importantly, understand that you will probably not get many bites. You may want to start out the day with a jig and then a crank bait, moving on to a jerk bait as the day

progresses. Some fish will want to get somewhat active and you should be ready to cash in when the opportunity presents itself. Most of the time cold fronts can be somewhat overcome and a few fish can be caught, but some are a lesson in futility and will require lots of thought and precise presentations. How did I do, you ask? Well, I worked everything I could and caught 3 fish. Not very good, I know, but remember: Some days you win, some days you lose and some days it rains. That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

Know What You Want in a Fence Is it strictly utilitarian? Are you just wanting something to possibly keep the dog in the yard? If this is the only reasoning, than a basic chain-link fence will due. If you’re wanting to block noise or add privacy, you will want something solid and tall. Maybe you want a simple fence for a dog, but also want to add a decorative touch? The key is to decide what will work best for you.
4. Make It Fancy Dress up any fence or backyard oasis with colorful annuals and hanging baskets. Also give it an element of style by attaching fun birdhouses and/or gardening or welcome signs! Whatever you like, make it your own!
Decks & Patios Now is the perfect time to build a new deck! The air is still dry enough that the wood will dry more consistently and it is not too hot yet so you can avoid cracking and warping from the heat.
2. Choose Your Materials What kind of maintenance are you willing to commit to? Wood fences require occasional staining or sealing and can warp over time, but provide the most privacy. More low maintenance options include aluminum, steel or wrought iron. If cost is an issue, wood fencing could be placed at the front and connect to chain link fencing in the back.
Sunroom Escapes Love the feeling of being outdoors but don’t want to weather the cold of winter or heat of summer? Consider a sunroom! Get the feel of an enclosed deck, but more luxurious. Enclose your current porch or add it on!
3. Create an Entrance Fenced areas should have at least two entrances for safety and convenience. Make sure that one of the entrances is large enough to accommodate outdoor equipment such as a lawn mower. If privacy and seclusion are important to you, look into a privacy gate.

Simplistically Light White is the new black this Spring in cabinet trends. Go for clean, shakerstyle doors in shades of white for a versatile, but traditional cabinet style.
Simple Southern Kitchen
Mismatched Marvel
A cabinet or island in a color or wood different from the rest of the kitchen is becoming a staple in many modern kitchens. It not only creates dimension, but brings warmth to the space.
Peek-A-Boo
Mixing in glass-front cabinet doors not only create display space for collectibles, pretty dishes and glassware, but they give the eye a break from wall-to-wall cabinetry creating a light and fresh look.
Custom Islands
Break the mold and go for an oneof-a-kind island. Islands are trending as replacements for the old fashioned kitchen table. So pull up a couple of stools and create a cozy chic kitchen feel.
Floor-to-Ceiling
Create added storage with floorto-ceiling cabinetry. When storage is reduced from other areas such as oversized windows, this feature can make-up for the storage loss.
Pop of Color
Form your color palette for your room by selecting approximately 3 colors from an item. Add accent colors to brighten up the room. Pops of color can be used in accessories such as chairs and stools, in cabinets with glass doors showing colorful dishes, or go bold and paint an accent wall.

Miss Texarkana
Haleigh Kate Wright
Haleigh Kate Wright is the daughter of Dr. Nathan and Juli Wright. She graduated from Pleasant Grove High School as a member of the National Honor Society, National Art Honor Society and the Gifted and Talented Program. In 2008 Haleigh was Clara in the Texarkana Community Ballet’s production of the Nutcracker. She was a member of the Pleasant Grove Showstoppers drill team all four years of high school and also served as Jr. Lieutenant and Sr. Captain. In 2010 Haleigh achieved second runner-up in the American Dance and Drill Team National Solo Competition as well as advancing to the semi finals in the ADDT National High-Kick Competition. In 2011 she was crowned Miss PGHS. Haleigh went on to attend Kilgore College. As a Rangerette at Kilgore, she had the honor of performing in two Cotton Bowl pre-game shows and half time performances. She also got the opportunity to perform in two Dallas Cowboy’s half time shows, the 70th Memorial of Pearl Harbor in Hawaii and the Black Tie and Boots Presidential Inaugural Ball. Haleigh is currently a senior at Texas A&M University Texarkana where she is a member of the National Honor Society and currently on the President’s List. At Miss Texarkana Twin Rivers, Haleigh received the title of Miss Texarkana, the Poff Communications Overall Interview Award, the Rebecca Pappas Overall Alpha Award and the Judith McCarty School of Dance Best Dancer Award. As Miss Texarkana, Haleigh plans to make a difference locally, particularly with children affected by childhood hunger. Her platform is “Helping Hungry Hearts, One Child at a Time, the Never-ending Circle of Childhood Hunger.” “I want to do as much as I can to give these hungry tummies something to eat,” Haleigh explains, “and this next year, I plan on doing just that.” In Haleigh’s free time, she loves teaching dance and cooking. “I love baking,” Haleigh exclaims, “and anything that involves chocolate!” Someday she hopes to even cook an entire Thanksgiving meal all by herself, “stuffing and all,” Haleigh says. Someday she also aspires to backpack across Europe, meet One Direction, be a Disney Princess at Disney World, live in the middle of the mountains of Colorado and read all of the Harry Potter books. Not only does she want to read the Harry Potter series, but “I have also always wanted to sit down with JK Rowling,” Haleigh says. After watching the movies when she was younger, Haleigh became instantly fascinated with the characters and story line. “To get to sit down and ask her about them from her point of view would be so neat,” she says, “I would ask her how she came up with all the spells and potion names.” What advice would you give other girls and women hoping to compete in Miss Texarkana Twin Rivers? Be yourself!! Pageants, particularly the Miss America Organization, are helping women change the world in areas and issues that are most important to them. I’d tell them to perform big when competing for the title, but remember the most important part about being a title holder is not what you wear on your head, but how you make people feel while your wearing the crown.
Miss Texarkana’s Outstanding Teen
Catherine Renee Hicks
Catherine Renee Hicks is the daughter of Cristi and Craig Hicks. Last year she was ranked in the top 8 Lincoln Douglas debaters for 2AA in the state of Texas and was named a member of the All-Star cast at Zone and District level for One Act Play. Catherine is currently the president of her school’s Mu Alpha Theta Honors Math Society, Student Council Reporter, Junior Class Secretary and Interact Club Founder/President. She is the Varsity Cheer Captain, member of the varsity tennis and golf teams, National Honor Society, Fellowship of Christian Athletes and Students and Spanish Club. Someday Catherine aspires to become a Dallas Cowboys Cheerleader. “It has been a dream of mine as long as I can remember,” she says, “along with graduating in the top two of my high school class.” Which she is currently working on and achieving. Her favorite charity’s are Compassion International and World Vision. “My family has adopted a child from each organization,” Catherine explains. They have had the privilege of communicating with the children through letters and pictures over the years. One day, she hopes to be able to travel to Africa and actually meet them. In her spare time, Catherine enjoys dancing, cheering, participating in her schools debate and theater clubs and being a part of their golf and tennis teams. She also finds time to volunteer through her schools ACE program (After school Center of Education) as a mentor and choreographs for her local peewee cheer squads competition routines. Catherine plans to promote her platform in the Texarkana area over the next year and do her best to prevent bullying in schools. She feels “the greatest benefit of being Miss Texarkana’s Outstanding Teen is the ability to promote my platform of ‘Stereotyping Related to Bullying.’” What is your personal motto? “I like to see a man proud of the place in which he lives. I like to see a man live so that his place will be proud of him” -Abraham Lincoln. I am already so proud to come from the Texarkana area and my goal is to now make Texarkana proud of me. 58

Ashlee Gilchrist
Ashlee is the daughter of Gary and Jennifer Gilchrist. Ashlee was top 10 percent of her class, an Advanced placement student, member of National Honor Society, voted “best leader” amongst PALs students and received the Presidential Award of Educational Excellence. She has also received a Duke of Edinburg Bronze Medal award, PTSA Citizenship Award, Jump Dance Convention scholarship, I Hollywood Dance Convention scholarship and the New York City Dance Alliance scholarship. Among her many awards and achievements, Ashlee is a member of the Dallas Repertoire Ballet Company and has been accepted into both the American Ballet Theater summer intensive and the Ballet Austin summer intensive. Ashlee’s life motto is “A life is not important except in the impact it has made on other lives,” a quote by Jackie Robinson. She lives this motto through her community involvement with the Peer Assistance and Leadership program at her school. Aside from providing mentors like Ashlee within the school district, the program also raises and donates funds and participates in charity work around the community. Throughout the next year, she hopes that her new title gives her even more opportunities to impact lives in her community in a positive way and serve her community in every way possible. Aside from being a title holder, pageants have many other wonderful benefits for young ladies. Ashlee hopes to grow as a person throughout this experience, and she wants to “walk away from [her] reign a more caring, charitable, and patient young woman with the drive to accomplish anything,” Ashlee says. Someday Ashlee plans to travel all over the world. “I want to see Paris, Rome, Greece and to spend Christmas in New York City,” she explains. If she could give any advice to other pageant participants and hopefuls, she would tell them to do just as she does, “Be yourself, always,” Ashlee explains. “No matter what you think the judges want to see or hear, stay true to yourself, and they’ll love you for you.” Ashlee’s personal idol is the Heavenly Father. “In all of His glory, no one can compare to His love and what He has done for me,” Ashlee says. If you could have dinner with one person, living or dead, who would it be, why and what is one question you would ask them? My great-grandmother, Nenny, because I miss her so much. I would ask if the banana nut bread in heaven is just as good as hers.
Miss Twin Rivers Outstanding Teen
Daylon Rae Bramhall
Dayton is the daughter of Jeffrey and Shelly Bramhall. She loves to dance and has earned many dance scholarships. Dayton has also had the opportunity to dance on Barney and Friends, to perform with the iHollywood Dance Co., perform as a Junior Dallas Cowboy’s Cheerleader for the last six years and of course, to win the title of Miss Twin Rivers Outstanding Teen for 2015. In her spare time, Dayton loves to dance, bake and take pictures! She also enjoys watching Pretty Little Liars, New Girl and Dance Moms. Her personal idol is her friend Olivia Carter. “She’s beautiful inside and out, and she is an amazing dancer,” Dayton explains. Dayton enjoys participating and supporting her favorite charity, Relay for Life, through dance as well. “It is so fun dancing during the fund-raiser with the girls from my dance studio,” she says. She hopes to someday get to take a trip around Europe and to go skydiving. Dayton hopes to grow as a leader through this experience and to set a good example for little girls in her area and across the state. She would tell the girls to be true to themselves and have confidence. “You cannot wear the crown if you don’t have confidence,” Dayton explains, “so don’t be scared to show your true colors and be yourself!” She hopes to spread her confidence to others and to become more responsible. What is your personal life motto? “Don’t be afraid to fail, be afraid not to try.”

Randee Jo lives by hard work. She knows that hard work always pays off and was taught that by her parents from a young age. “Setting goals is important to me,” she explains, “and reaching goals require hard work and dedication.” Through her hard work, Randee Jo is dedicated to working with the Boys and Girls Club. She spends a lot of her spare time in their art room and working the concession stand during the summer for baseball tournaments. When she isn’t volunteering, Randee Jo enjoys spending time with her friends and family and catching up on her favorite shows such as Scandal, Pretty Little Liars, Law and Order SVU and Vampire Diaries. Family time is very important to Randee Jo. Her personal idol is her mother. “She has always been there for me through the food times and the bad, and for that I am truly grateful. She gives everything she has to make sure that my sister and I have everything that we need. I am so thankful for her because without her love and support, I wouldn’t be the young woman I am today,” she says. Randee Jo strives to be a great role model for girls, and she would love the opportunity to speak with another great role model for women, Carrie Underwood. She would like to find out how she balances everything in her busy yet interesting life and still manages to have fun and be a great role model to all age groups. What advice would you give little girls and young ladies currently competing in pageants? “The best advice I have is to have fun, meet new friends, and better themselves. I have competed in pageants my entire life, and these three things have always given me the best pageant experiences. Some of my best friends come from the pageant world, so even though you are competing against each other doesn’t mean that you cant have fun and make the best out of your experience. You win some and lose some, but no matter what keep your head up and continue to excel in your pageant careers.

Scarlett Dawn Leeper
Scarlett is the daughter of Jason and Gina Leeper. She is a member of National Honor Society, Cross Country State Champs 2014, All-District Softball player, a Fields of Faith Worship Leader and District Champ for track 2012-2014. In the next year, Scarlett plans to utilize her talent of singing and incorporate it into promoting music therapy as part of her platform, “Respecting Our Elders.” She already has plans to sing at Cornerstone Retirement Community weekly to patients with Alzheimer’s, a disease very close to her heart and family, and Dementia. Scarlett’s grandmother, Doris James, had Alzheimer’s for 22 years. “I truly believe this therapy can make a difference with those patients,” Scarlett explains. She also is planning a concert at Silvermoon in April with help from Stacy Mayo and other sister titleholders in order to raise funds to purchase iPods for patients with these diseases at the Woodview Center (the Alzheimer’s facility associated with Cornerstone). “I want to increase awareness about respecting our elders in general to those around me, especially my peers. There is so much we can learn from that generation. They have such precious memories and stories to share... People who have lived through World Wars and decades of constant change. I really want to listen and learn from them,” Scarlett says. Scarlett hopes to some day travel to Italy, perform at Madison Square Garden and be a part of the Grammy’s. She also wants to meet her idol, Taylor Swift. “I love Taylor Swift because of her song writing skills, her passion for performing, her ability to laugh at herself and the huge heart she has for her fans,” Scarlet explains. Scarlett also enjoys writing songs in her spare time, that plus fishing and playing basketball and softball. Scarlett has helped with many charities throughout her lifetime including the Children’s Miracle Network, but one of the best experiences she has encountered so far was singing at a homeless couple’s wedding. If you could have dinner with one person, living or dead, who would it be, why and what is one question you would ask them? There are so many people I would love to have dinner with, but if I had to choose just one, I would have dinner with Job, from the Old Testament, because of his amazing life story of humility and perseverance, which has impacted my life. He went through so many trials and tribulations. Anyone would have given up, but he never did because of his faith in God. I would ask him “what was it like living completely on God’s strength?” 60

Doggy, come home...
Turning lost into found
WORDS BY TEXARKANA ANIMAL LEAGUE
Millions of dogs go missing each year. Unfortunately, very few of them are ever reunited with their owners. Many of them become and remain strays. Others are taken to pounds or shelters, where they are all too often, euthanized. The luckier ones are saved by rescue organizations and ultimately placed in adoptive homes. But it doesn’t have to be this way. Lately, an increasing number of conscientious dog owners have begun to rely on a dual form of protection for their precious family pet. Included in this “protective package” are visible forms of identification – ID tags -- and permanent ones -- microchips. Pet ID tags are small metallic or plastic tags personalized with your name, address, and phone number, and attached to your dog’s collar. These tags are as close as your nearest pet supply store or online vendor, and if your dog ever goes missing, will immediately identify you as the owner. Microchipping is a simple and safe procedure. A veterinarian injects a microchip designed especially for animals -- the size of a grain of rice -- beneath the surface of your dog’s skin between the shoulder blades. Similar to a routine shot, it takes only a few seconds and most dogs don’t seem to even feel the implantation. Unlike ID tags, a microchip is permanent and, with no internal energy source, will last the life of your dog. Your dog must then be promptly registered with the microchip company (usually for a one-time fee), thus storing his unique, alpha-numeric code in the company’s database. Whenever a lost dog appears at a shelter, humane society or 64
ALT Magazine
March 2015
veterinary clinic, he/she will automatically be scanned for a microchip. If there is one, the screen of the handheld scanner will display that dog’s specific code. A simple call to the recovery database using a toll free 800 number enables the code to be traced back to the dog’s owner. But in order for the system to work efficiently, all owners are cautioned to keep their contact information up-to-date. The most complete microchips comply with International Standards Organization (ISO) Standards. These standards define the structure of the microchip’s information content and determine the protocol for scanner-microchip communication. They also include the assignment of a 15-digit numeric identification code to each microchip; 3 digits either for the code of the country in which the dog was implanted or for the manufacturer’s code; one digit for the dog’s category (optional), and the remaining 8 or 9 digits for that dog’s unique ID number. As with anything else, however, problems can and do arise. Not all shelters, humane societies, and veterinary offices have scanners. Although rare, microchips can fail, and even universal scanners may not be able to detect every microchip. Accurate detection can also be hampered if dogs struggle too much while being scanned or if either long, matted hair or excess fat deposits cover the implantation site. And because there are an everincreasing number of pet recovery services, there is, as yet, no single database that links one to the other. Since no method of identification is perfect, the best way owners can protect their dogs is by keeping current ID tags on them, microchipping them, and never allowing them to roam free.

The Texarkana Humane Society is a non-profit volunteer organization dedicated to re-homing orphaned animals, promoting the human-animal bond, preventing animal cruelty, educating children and adults about responsible pet ownership and preventing pet overpopulation. In order to reduce the number of unwanted animals and the euthanization of them at the shelter people need to spay/neuter their pets. The Texarkana Humane Society has a program to help individuals do this and urge everyone to get involved and tell your neighbor, family, and friends to be responsible and do their part in putting a stop to this problem here in our city. Have them contact us regarding our program. Call 903 838-6334 and we will be glad to help you.
