Brave…what does it take for someone to help others? Bravery, compassion, a love for others, selflessness – I would say that all of those characteristics are a part of what it takes. The men and women in this month’s ALT all have these things in common – they wanted to help and they did. Wouldn’t it be a wonderful world if we all chose to help others? I love to help other people – almost to a fault. I have been told that I am too nice to the people I care about. It was such a pleasure to be able to share that there are others that care as much as I do.

heat, the fresh air, the bonding and family compose the perfect summer vacation.
It’s officially Summer! Oh, and HOT! It seems like its hotter this year than last already and its only July. I find myself submerged in water just to stay cool. July is upon us, and that means school is out! Something about that makes me happy even though I still work year round. I still get the feeling of relief that comes meaning no homework. And no homework translates into fun. Growing up in this part of the world, I found my childhood summers especially blessed with the pleasures of camping at Dierks Lake, catching lighting bugs or just cooking out with friends

Jonathon Price Name and Title
Kenneth Mcmillen
Jonathon was born in July of 1988 in Texarkana, Texas. He graduated from Jefferson High School in Jefferson, Texas in 2006. Jonathon moved to Texarkana in the Fall of 2006 to study Criminal Justice at Texarkana College.
Kenneth began his career in law enforcement at the age of 21. He enlisted in the United States Air Force Reserve at the age of 29. He is still presently with both agencies until July, when he will continue his career as a recruit for the Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol.
He began his law enforcement career with Texarkana, Texas Police Department in February of 2009. During his tenure with the Police Department he has served in the Uniform Services Division as a Patrol Officer and as an Investigator with the Special Investigations Unit. He is also a member of the Texarkana Texas SWAT Team and a Field Training Officer. When he was young he often told his parents he wanted to be a police officer when he grew up. He knew from a very young age what he wanted to do with his life.
In the Air Force, he is a Technical Sergeant as Civil Engineer Structural Journeyman. As a Sheriff’s Deputy he has performed the duties as Patrol Deputy, Criminal Investigator, Narcotics Investigator, and a member of the S.W.A.T entry team.
Jonathon enjoys his career and being able to help people on a daily basis. He also enjoys being able to take part in community outreach programs such as “Shop with a Cop” and “Tip-a-Cop” benefiting the Special Olympics of Texas. “It’s very rewarding to see the excitement on the children’s faces each year. My wife, Megan, is very supportive of my career as a police officer. She has always encouraged me to pursue any aspect of law enforcement I wanted to be a part of, “ Jonathon says.
In the Air Force Kenny has received Meritorious Unit Award, AF Outstanding Award, Air Reserve Forces Meritorious Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Air Force Expeditionary Service Ribbon with Gold Border, AF Longevity Service, Small Arms Expert Marksmanship Ribbon, AF Training Ribbon, and NATO Medal. As a deputy, he has received Officer of the Year, Life Saving Award, Advanced Peace Officer, S.W.A.T, Ten Years of Service, and Field Training Officer medals. His most exciting moment in the military was saying the Oath of Enlistment during Basic Training Graduation, assuring him that he was now becoming a part of something bigger than I could ever have imagined in serving in the United States of America. The most adrenaline pumping situation? “I would have to say making the decision to enter a burning home to attempt to save Mrs. Loy Melton’s life knowing that I could have lost my own.” We asked how he handled the stress and pressure. “We always have to deal with stressful situations, whether it’s having to deal with accidents, family disputes, loss of loved ones, and having to give a death notification, or dealing with children in critical lifestyles. Afterwards I will talk it over with my co-workers to see if there was something I could’ve done better or if I handled the situation properly reassuring myself I did all I could do to the best of my ability. At times I have spoken to my wife, but if I can help it I try not to for the simple fact that I don’t want her to know some of the situations faced.”

Tyler Gibson Tyler was born on June 3rd, 1996, in the Naval Hospital in San Diego, California. He enlisted in the Navy at 17 and deployed on July 24, 2014. He serves as a Hospital Corpsman, an assistant to Navy doctors, as well as a combat medical if assigned to the US Marines (Corpsman can be assigned to either branch at various times). Tyler knew he wanted to wear this uniform when he looked out over the Pacific Fleet from Point Loma and saw Old Glory waving in the distance. He has received the Battle E ribbon, The National Defense ribbon, the Global War on Terrorism Service Ribbon, Sea Service Ribbon, Oversea Service Ribbon, and Expert Rifle and Pistol ribbons. Tyler said being in uniform means a lot of missed birthdays, weddings, funerals, and holidays. “I generally just try to ignore it. I got lucky enough to be stationed with my fiancé who is also my best friend so I pour a lot of time into her and just try to focus on future plans. We got lost on a train together in Japan around Yokohama and just really hit it off after that. One of the advantages, Tyler says, is “having more of an idea of how to save someone’s life if they started dying in front of me. I have also been able to travel all around the world (Japan, Australia, Peru, Chile, and Brazil) so I have a better understanding of how the world works.”

Daniel Britton
Christine Knouse
Daniel Britton was born in Phoenix, AZ, in 1985 and reported to the Texas Department of Public Safety Training Academy on his 22nd birthday. He is still currently employed with the Texas Department of Public Safety and the Texas Highway Patrol division. His main goal is to execute the mission of the Department of Public Safety which is to protect and serve while maintaining the motto of “Courtesy, Service, Protection.” While attempting to spend the majority of their time on routine patrol in the rural parts of Texas, they have promised to defend US Constitution and State rights, federal and state laws, and to investigate rural crashes.
Christine Knouse was born November 28, 1969, in Frankfurt, Germany, while her father was in the Army. She was hired in July of 2005 with the Texarkana Arkansas Police Department. She is currently working misdemeanor cases due to a work injury. Prior to that, she was assigned to the special operations section, and assigned to the Texarkana Arkansas School District as their resource officer. She worked at all campuses. When school is not in session, she works as a patrol officer. Prior to becoming a police officer, she worked in emergency medical medicine as an EMT. She has always enjoyed helping people and working outside.
We asked what made him want to wear the uniform. “I had an instructor in a college class that was an Oklahoma Highway Patrol Trooper. He had become almost like a mentor and had been very influential in my young life. I had always been very impressed with their demeanor and the way they handled their business. One day during a training scenario, he pulled me aside and told me that I needed to do everything I could to become a State Trooper. It was then that I really starting shifting my focus towards The Highway Patrol.”
As a young girl she wanted to be a police officer but was discouraged. She felt she had reached a point in her life that she wanted to pursue another promising career. We asked about her first day in uniform. “My first day as a police officer was filled with mixed emotions. I was excited and scared. I wasn’t sure of myself and as a woman I had to prove myself in a male dominated career. I was once told that to be a police officer you have to be thick skinned. That is true in a way that you can not take insults personally. What I have told people who were not happy with my presence was that underneath this uniform is a woman, wife, mom, sister and grandmother. I have a job to do just like you. This is my job and I will do it to the best of my abilities,” she said.
Daniel has been awarded a Marksman, Physical Fitness, and Fleet Safety Awards for his firearms proficiency, his dedication to remaining physically sound, and for years of safe driving. We asked for a funny story. “My first supervisor was adamant about us maintaining our patrol vehicles and that they were always up to date on inspections. One day I noticed that his vehicle inspection sticker had expired so I wrote him a warning and placed it on his windshield. He did not think it was too funny!” Daniel has a lot of support from his family. “My family is amazing! They are so supportive of my career path that I have chosen. But with any job where shift work is required, it always creates tension and stress. We try every day to work hard at helping each other and appreciate the time we do spend together,” Daniel says. He handles the stress and pressure the uniform brings by studying and meditating on God’s word, keeping his family and work life separate, maintaining a healthy lifestyle, and working on other hobbies. 018 ALT Magazine | July 2016
When asked how the uniform has affected her life, she said being a police officer has made her more aware, as her life depends on the smallest details or movements. “One thing they remind us is not to get complacent because the unknown is a scary thing.” Christine values her experience as a school resource officer. “I was unaware of the impact I have had on the youth of this community. I have been referred to by students over the years as mama or mama K. I grew up in a typical country household and I have seen first hand that not all children grow up with loving parents in their lives.”

Rick Cockrell
Jeremy Price
Rick’s career started just at the age of 18 years old when he enlisted in the Armed Forces and left for Basic Training three days after his high school graduation. Rick excelled as an enlisted soldier training and travelling all over the world. During his military career Rick has been recognized for his outstanding service while stationed in Germany, graduating in top of his class and youngest soldier while at Assault School, and during his deployment in theatre receiving multiple commendations. He deployed with the 36th Infantry Division to Iraq where he served a 16-month tour with the 3rd of the 133rd Infantry Regiment. While stationed at Tallil he conducted combat operations south to Camp Bucca all the way north to the city of Taji. Officer Rick Cockrell was the lead truck commander for his squad while conducting convey security missions as well as team leader while conducting personnel security details for Civil Affair missions in Iraq. On June 8th 2009 Rick’s convoy was attacked when his and another truck were hit by a pressure plate activated IED. The IED disabled both vehicles trapping three soldiers inside. Rick, along with his brother in arms, Robert Biggs, were recognized for pulling those soldiers from the vehicle and retrieving sensitive materials inside. After his tour, he returned home to his beautiful wife Laura and they later had a beautiful baby girl. Rick joined TAPD in February 2010 as a patrol officer and has had the opportunity to work in different roles with in the agency. Rick is the type of officer who never said NO when needed or when confronted with a challenge. He served two years as Vice President of our Local Police Association, and is now serving as an Executive Board Member for the Arkansas Tactical Officer’s Association. Rick is attached to their Honor Guard as well as the SWAT Team. He also serves as a certified law enforcement instructor conducting training throughout the state of Arkansas.
022 ALT Magazine | July 2016
Born in Texarkana, Jeremy Price joined the United States Marine Corps and is still active duty as a chemical, biological, radiological, and nuclear defense specialist. As a child, he always wanted to join the service. Listening to his grandfather and other veterans from past wars, he always felt the need to join and give back a portion of his time to society for the sacrifice that others had made before him. Aside from the initial boot camp and following combat and job training, his first day at his first duty station, 3rd Battalion 6th Marines based out of Camp Lejeune, NC, was the sudden realization that he was in a unit who had a purpose. Deploy. Being a part of that was an awesome experience. He was awarded two navy achievement medals, a good conduct medal among a national defense medal, global war on terrorism expeditionary medal, global war on terrorism medal and two sea service deployment ribbons. For him, the most nerve-racking part is flying in MV-22 Ospreys. “I hate flying and there is nothing scarier to me then being in one over water. They had a pretty bad track record of falling out of the sky in testing and fielding. So if you want to see me white knuckled holding onto anything around me while my heart feels like it is about to explode, it is that.” Jeremy said being in uniform has given him financial stability and the ability to go back and finish college once he is finished with the service. How does he handle it? “There are service members and families who have experienced far worse things then me. Some even made the ultimate sacrifice and died for their brothers beside them in a far off country. We take that for granted every day and our individual struggles with the daily grind seem so small. Imagine explaining to a child that their father or mother will never come home again. That makes it easy for me.”

Alisha Price Alisha Price joined the Army at 25 years old. From Texarkana, she left for basic training at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri, in December of 2010 and is currently in Active Duty. She is a helicopter mechanic and specifically work on Chinooks. However, she is hoping to change her MOS to become a UAV Operator, or in other words, be a drone pilot. “Joining the Army was a very spontaneous decision. I was a senior at University of North Texas and had no desire to continue with my major at the time. My brother had just enlisted in the Marines and had talked me into going to see recruiters at the mall. I spoke with every branch and wasn’t very interested. I went into the Army’s recruiting office last and asked them, “Who wants to convince me to join?” Needless to say, I had no real intention of joining but here I am almost 6 years later, and deployed to Germany and now in Poland.” Alisha has received expert marksmanship badge, basic aviators badge, drivers badge, 5 Army achievement medals, Army service ribbon, global war on terrorism, Army good conduct medal, overseas service ribbon, NCO professional development ribbon, Korea defense service medal, and the national defense service medal. We asked if she ever pulled a prank on the job. “At my first duty station in California I thought it was funny to send the new privates on tasks that didn’t actually exist. Even though cliche, I still sent the guys for exhaust samples, chemical light batteries, grid squares, etc. We would also turn off the power on the trucks and leave the new guys wondering why their vehicles wouldn’t start.” Altogether, Alisha said joining the military was humbling. “It has given me the opportunity to live in different countries and experience new cultures. It has made me appreciate the little things.”
Shawn Jacobs Shawn Jacobs enlisted into the United States Army after working for a year in construction, realizing that wasn’t his calling. He spent a little over six years on active duty before finishing up in the Army National Guard for a total of ten years. Shawn came home in 2002 after learning his dad was diagnosed with cancer. He applied with the TTPD and spent the first couple of months in basic training. After two short years on the streets, he became a field training officer. “I took this position because I wanted to make a difference in the quality of new officer that was hitting the street. An officer that was going to be proactive and not reactive,” Shawn says. He was also given the opportunities to work undercover on the Bi-State Narcotics Task Force, but after his newborn son arrived and he learned he would soon have a daughter, he returned to his field training status patrolling the streets. He later became a property Detective in the Investigation Division. In 2014, Shawn married his soulmate, Leslie Jacobs. “I began attending The First Biker’s Church of Texarkana at the end of 2014 and it’s the best thing that has ever happened to me because in early 2015 I turned my life over to our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.” Shawn took the Sergeant position at the Nash Police Department in November 2015. “I love getting out on the streets and being proactive, especially when it comes to working drugs. There is a large percentage of crime that revert back to drugs in one way or the other. It is my belief that if you work the drug problem, your other crimes reduce,” Shawn said, “I have had the chance to work alongside some of the bravest, heroic men and woman in the world.... Being a soldier in the Army and a Police Officer has given me a positive experience in life. I have seen so many bad and negative things that I try to find a positive in all situations. I pass that along to all of my kids. When they complain about something, I have told them many of times that they could always have it worse.”

MY K-9
MY PARTNER IN CRIME Edited by: Amber Mason
A Police dog’s prayer: Oh Almighty God, whose great power and eternal wisdom embraces the universe, watch over my handler while I sleep. Protect my handler from harm while I am unable to do so. I pray, help keep our streets and homes safe while my handler and I rest. I ask for your loving care because my handler’s duty is dangerous. Grant my handler your unending strength and courage in our daily assignments. Dear God, protect my brave handler, grant your almighty protection, unite my handler safely with the family after the tour of duty has ended. I ask nothing for myself. Amen. Officer Jason Green started his journey with his K-9 dog, Bery, in 2006. Bery was flown to the USA from Czechoslovakia one week prior to staff members of the Texarkana Texas Police Department traveling to Rockwall, TX. 026 ALT Magazine | July 2016
A K9 vendor in Rockwall had Bery as well as several other K9s that they were able to choose from. Once Bery was selected, he was sent to Hattiesburg, MS, to a master canine trainer for four months. This training consisted of detecting odors of marijuana, methamphetamine, cocaine, heroin, and ecstasy. Bery was also trained in tracking, locating and apprehending (biting) criminals that were hiding in structures. During Bery’s fourth month of training, Jason travelled to Hattiesburg, MS, to train with him under the guidance of the master trainer. Bery and Jason spent their days and nights together, training and living in a hotel during the final month. At the conclusion of their training together, Jason achieved a handler certification. Bery and Jason were deployed on the streets of Texarkana in December of 2006 and worked together as a team
Back the Brave until his retirement in January 2014. “There are numerous moments worth sharing but one of the funniest memories I have is of a night that Bery and I were on patrol and were dispatched to a burglary in progress call. Upon our arrival, Bery was deployed inside the convenience store to search for the burglar while fellow officers and I waited outside. Bery did an excellent job of searching the building, so much that he apparently felt warranted of a reward as he came running out with a corn dog in his mouth,” Jason said, “My favorite story was when my son, Caden, was only two years old. One morning while I was still asleep from working the night shift, my wife Amy had been doing laundry when she suddenly realized Caden was not around. After searching the house, she went outside and discovered that the gate to Bery’s kennel had been opened and Bery and Caden were nowhere to be found. The next possible place to look was the patrol car which was a very scary thought because Bery was very protective of his car and would not have anyone other than me in it or around it. Expecting the worst, Amy opened the back door to find Caden and Bery sitting in the back of the car like nothing was going on…perfectly normal. Caden is the only person that was ever able to
get in the back of the car with Bery without being chewed to pieces.” Bery was extraordinary in drug pursuits. On one instance, Bery located 10 kilograms of cocaine that were hidden in a false compartment built into the bumper of a car on Interstate 30. He was very successful in locating illegal drugs within the city of Texarkana. This
was just one of many large drug seizures that Bery was responsible for. Jason’s most notable moment was when Bery and he were involved in a vehicle pursuit with a known violent felon that had several felony warrants. Once the vehicle pursuit came to an end the felon began fleeing on foot toward an apartment complex. Jason pursued the subject
and activated the door release to let Bery out of the car. As they were chasing this man, he dropped something on the sidewalk and turned around to pick it up. Jason wasn’t able to see what it was due to the darkness. As the felon was bending over to pick it up, Bery apprehended him on the leg, knocking him to the ground. Once the felon was secured in handcuffs and Bery was called off of him, they discovered that the item he had dropped and was trying to pick up was a handgun. This is just one instance in Bery’s career where he saved Jason’s life and never hesitated in doing so. “It was a great comfort knowing that I always had a partner with me that would lay down his life protecting me,” Jason says. Most police departments require some commitment to the K9 Handler position. In Jason’s case, TTPD required a three year commitment to the position. Once the K9 is assigned to the handler they live together for the duration of their career. Living together creates a strong bond between the K9 and their handler. In November of 2013, Jason let Bery out of the car to take a break. When he opened the door to let Bery out, he wouldn’t get out of the car. Once Bery finally got out of the car, Jason noticed that he was having trouble walking. The next morning I took Bery to Oubre Animal Clinic where Doctors Powell and Pfluger examined

Back the Brave him and determined that he had developed some bone spurs on his spine which were causing him pain and discomfort. Due to Bery’s age the decision was made to retire him two months later. Shortly after Bery was retired, Jason was assigned a new K9, Argus. Due to Bery’s great desire to work and the excitement he displayed when it was time to go to work, Jason felt it was in his best interest to not see him load another K9 into “his” patrol car. Even though his body was getting old, Bery’s mind was still very active. Jason was fortunate enough that his great friend and fellow officer, Cory Caudle, offered to take Bery in at his home. Transitioning to a new K9 after handling Bery was somewhat difficult. There were a lot of things that Bery and Jason
had perfected together that he had to teach the new K9 to do. “Argus was a great K9 and still is, but it was so much easier with a seasoned K9 that had been there and done that!”
passed away at his home on May 21st, 2016. Rest in peace Bery. Thank you for your service.
After working with Argus for a year and with the support of his family, Jason decided to advance his career for the betterment of his family and himself. He left TTPD in January 2015 to pursue a career with the Texas Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol. When Jason left TTPD, Argus was assigned a new handler which enabled him to bring Bery back home. When he started his career with the Texas Department of Public Safety, Jason had to attend a six month academy in Austin, TX. At that time, his son, Caden, took on the role of taking care of Bery. how to choose a restaurant for a first date 1. If you’re especially nervous about a first date, choose a restaurant where the food isn’t the only focal point. Check to see if there will be live music or activities going on. 2. It doesn’t matter if your favorite chain restaurant is offering dinner specials for two. Choose an eatery with a unique flair. Go somewhere that offers something new. 3. Any lady would be impressed by the thoughtfulness of choosing the perfect first date setting. Just don’t forget to make a reservation! Flowers wouldn’t hurt either.

Garlic Mini Cheeseburgers
Ingredients: 2 lbs of ground beef 1 tbsp dried minced onions 1 tbsp of minced fresh garlic 2 tbsp of Worcestershire sauce 12 dinner rolls (or potato rolls) 6 slices of Colby and Monterrey Jack Cheese Topping: 4 tbsp of unsalted butter, melted, 1 tsp of minced fresh garlic
Directions: In a large bowl, combine ground beef, minced garlic, dried minced onions, and Worcestershire sauce. Divide meat into 12 even portions. Roll each portion into a ball. Between two pieces of plastic wrap, flatten each portion with a rolling pin until about 1/4 to 1/2 inch thick. You want the burgers just slightly larger than your dinner rolls as they will shrink to the perfect “bun size” as they cook. In a preheated nonstick pan, cook burgers on medium-high heat. Once one side begins to brown, flip the burger with a spatula and continue cooking until cooked all the way through. Cooking times will vary. Burgers will be done meat is no longer pink in the center.
Rainbow Salmon Skewers
Ingredients: 12 oz salmon fillet 1/2 each of a red, green yellow, and orange bell pepper 1/4 large red onion olive oil salt and fresh cracked black pepper 1 lemon Directions: Cut the salmon into 1 1/2 inch chunks. You are going to need approximately 12 pieces. Cut the peppers into 1 1/2 inch square pieces. Cut the red onion into similar sized chunks and separate the layers. Thread your skewers alternately with the onions and peppers, and then the salmon. Leave some room at the base so you can handle them easily. Brush the skewers liberally on both sides with olive oil, and sprinkle with salt and fresh ground black pepper. Cook on a hot grill, turning once, until the fish is cooked through and the veggies are softened a bit. Don’t overcook! Serve with a squeeze of lemon.
Bacon Wrapped Asparagus Ingredients: 1 pound asparagus ½ pound of bacon Heat grill to around 400 degrees. Break each asparagus spear in half. Slice each strip of bacon in half, then wrap it around both halves of the asparagus spear. Toothpick the bacon through the loose end on top at an angle, so it goes through the bacon on the other side. Grill for about 25-30 minutes, flipping them over halfway through.

Grilled Sweet Potatoes
Ingredients: 2 pounds sweet potatoes 3-4 tbsp olive oil Kosher salt Dressing: 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh cilantro (including stems) 1 teaspoon of lime zest or lemon zest 2 tablespoons of fresh lime or lemon juice 1/4 cup olive oil Pinch of salt Directions: Prepare the grill, prep the sweet potatoes: Prepare your grill for hot, direct heat. While the grill is heating up, peel the sweet potatoes and slice lengthwise, or on a diagonal, into 1/4 inch-thick pieces. Coat the sweet potato slices with olive oil and lightly sprinkle with Kosher salt. Make cilantro lime dressing: Combine all of the dressing ingredients into a small bowl. Grill the sweet potatoes: Once the grill is hot, lay the sweet potato pieces down onto the grill grates. Cover the grill and cook until each side gets some grill marks, between 3-6 minutes for each side, depending on how hot your grill is. Toss the sweet potatoes in a bowl with the dressing and serve hot.
Bloomin' Grilled Apples
Ingredients: 2 small baking apples 4 tbsp maple cream caramel sauce, divided 6 tsp chopped pecans, divided 2 scoops vanilla ice cream Directions: Cut off the top fourth of the apples. Scoop out the core. Use a thin knife to make a deep, circular cut around the center of the apple. Turn the apple over and make narrow cuts all the way around the apple. Fill the center of the apples with maple caramel sauce and chopped pecans. I used about one tablespoon of maple cream sauce and two teaspoons of chopped pecans for each apple. Wrap the stuffed apples with heavy duty foil and grill over medium heat for 30 minutes, with the grill lid closed. Unwrap the maple pecan blooming grilled apple and use tongs to set it on a plate. Top the bloomin’ grilled apples with a scoop of vanilla bean ice cream. Drizzle each one with one tablespoon of warm maple pecan sauce and sprinkle with a teaspoon of chopped pecans.
Grilled Banana S'mores Ingredients: bananas (1/2-1 per person) mini marshmallows mini chocolate chips granola toffee bits
Directions: Cut a slit in the banana, lengthwise, but not all the way through to the bottom. Spread open and stuff with marshmallows and chocolate chips. Place on a sheet of tin foil and loosely fold over the ends and top (leave lots of head room so you don’t get melted marshmallow all over the top of your tin foil.) Grill over medium heat for 3-5 minutes, until the marshmallows are fluffy and the chips are softened and melty. Top with crunchy toppings: toffee, granola, graham crackers, vanilla wafers, etc. 054 ALT Magazine | July 2016

Random Acts of Kindness On June 7th, Heather Richardson’s 35th birthday, she posted to Facebook wishing her friends would bless another with a random act of kindness instead of wishing her a happy birthday. “I have an early birthday wish for all my FB friends! The devil is busy at work right now. Satan is trying to steal my joy and happiness in any way possible lately. I believe because I try to bless and love people the way God has always loved and blessed me and my family! In appreciation of being abundantly blessed and turning 35 tomorrow, I want you to help me bless others! Instead of prayers and birthday wishes, I am asking for each of you to bless another with a random act of kindness today or tomorrow please. Whatever your heart leads you to do, it will in turn be a blessing to you! Kill people with kindness and be a blessing to others! Love you all, lets give the devil a swift kick in the ass! Here are some of the random acts of kindness that took place for Heather’s birthday: “Heather I love your message yesterday... about your birthday wishes for a present. So I simply prayed that God would give me someone to help. And it couldn’t have been 4 hours and a single gal we know call Deborah in a panic about her inspection. So we did what you requested a couple of bulbs and a half hour or work Happy Birthday. This was a huge blessing to me thank you.

Fish Tales with Mike Brower Grinding of the Gears
What really grinds my gears is that electronics are always obsolete the day you buy the “new on the market” LCR or GPS Combo. Companies like Hummingbird, Lowrance, Garmin and the others introduce more elaborate, more bells and whistles units every year, knowing they are old news the very day they release them to the market. They have at least a couple of years’ worth of technology stored up and waiting to be released to the fishing public. I wish they would be more like cars manufactures and change technology every couple of years, so we can learn how to use what we have before we have to start all over. It’s good for sales, I guess, but who has the bucks to scrap last year’s unit that was “guaranteed to find you more fish than ever before” and then shell out and then $3,000 for the next generation that does the same thing. I wish they would upgrade the technology, put it out there for us to use and then in a couple of years make a bunch of upgrades and release again. I refuse to buy into this junk. I get the most current units on the new boat and fish with them until I get another boat. Fishermen spend a ton of bucks on boats, trailers and equipment as it is, but as PT Barnham said, “There’s a sucker born every minute,” and fishermen are always looking for the next edge or gimmick when we should be learning to be better basic fishermen. Just my opinion. If you disagree, then this message will self-destruct in 10 seconds...maybe. 066 ALT Magazine | July 2016

Random Acts of Kindness WHAT A GREAT NIGHT AT LIFE HOUSE SLAM! “What a great night at Life House SLAM! One of the highlights of the night is that we were able to send home some desserts and drinks with each of the youth that came tonight. One of our newer youth who has been coming to church and youth group for a few weeks, Tevin, did a spontaneous act of love as soon as he left tonight. Tevin lives very close to Life House -across the street. On his way home he noticed a homeless man, that we have known for some time, sitting in the brush thicket under some trees. Tevin willingly went and offered the man his dessert and then went home and brought back something to drink and gave him $5.00 of his own money. We would have never known but a couple of our LH SLAM coaches saw it all happen through the front doors of LH. We shared with him how proud we were of his loving and giving heart! Way to go Tevin!”

Financial Focus
FINANCIAL FOCUS
W/DUSTIN STRINGER
Here’s How To Decide Which Retirement Accounts To Fund First Decisions, decisions. You’ve got lots of ways to save for retirement, ranging from accounts in company plans to individual retirement accounts to taxable accounts. So how do you decide where to put the money -money that you’ll depend on to fund a lot, maybe all, of your retirement? Which types of accounts help you most with retirement planning ? Think of the answers as your retirement contribution priorities . Some financial advisors even have a term for it: your order of retirement investments. Here are the different types of accounts, listed in descending order of importance to you. 401(k) account. The 401(k), if you have one, tops the list of accounts you should use because nearly all plans -- 93%, according to Aon Hewitt, human-resource consultants and outsourcers -offer a matching contribution by your employer. If your employer matches the first, say, 5% of the pay that you divert into your account, you should kick in at least that much money. Otherwise, you are turning your back on free money. You wouldn’t turn down a pay raise, would you? And you shouldn’t reject a company match. A 401(k) account offers additional benefits as well. One of the best is that all of the money you contribute is excluded from your taxable income. Another is that all of your earnings inside the account are excluded from your taxable income. Money from your account is only subject to income tax once you withdraw it, which can be decades after you first put it to work. Roth accounts. You can open a Roth version of an IRA, and you can use a Roth 401(k) account if your plan offers it. Why does this matter? Unlike contributions to a regular 401(k) account or IRA, you can’t deduct the money that you kick in from your taxable income that year. But as in regular 401(k)s and IRAs, earnings inside a Roth account grow taxfree. Better yet, withdrawals are totally tax-free after five years and once you reach age 59-1/2. And because of compound growth, the more time you have before you start withdrawals -- and if your tax bracket stays the same or
STRINGER WEA LTH M A NAGEMENT LPL FINA NCI A L StringerWealthManagement.net
rises after you retire -- the more likely you’d be better off with a Roth account, as opposed to a traditional IRA or 401(k). That means you end up with more after-tax spendable money with a Roth, in large part because you avoid the tax haircut on withdrawals. Roth 401(k) vs. a Roth IRA . There are income limits on eligibility to contribute to a Roth IRA, but not on contributions to a Roth 401(k).
And remember that the annual contribution caps apply to all of your IRAs cumulatively. The cap is $5,500 if you’re under age 50. It’s $6,500 if you’re age 50 or older. So if you put money into more than one type of IRA, all of the contributions in 2016 can total no more than those amounts. Nondeductible IRA. No matter how high your MAGI is, you can make nondeductible contributions to a traditional IRA.
If you’re single, the phaseout range for Roth IRA contributions in 2016 starts at $117,000 modified gross adjusted income (MAGI). You totally lose eligibility at $132,000 MAGI. If you’re married and filing jointly, the phaseout range is $184,000 to $194,000.
You may wonder why, if contributions are not deductible, you would bother with this option. For one thing, investment earnings within any IRA are tax-deferred. You can trade in and out of various holdings, if you wish, without owing tax on any gains.
No such caps apply to Roth 401(k) contributions.
Another benefit: taxes aren’t due until you take money out. By then, you might be retired and in a lower tax bracket. One downside is that all your withdrawals are taxed as regular income, not as capital gains. Another: you must start taking taxable distributions by age 70-1/2. Taxable brokerage account. You don’t get any up-front deduction on contributions. You don’t enjoy any tax-deferral on earnings over time. But the account can provide the structure and discipline you need to save and invest money rather than fritter it away on beer and pizza.
So, if you earn more than those limits, put money into a Roth 401(k) if one’s available to you, instead of using a Roth IRA. Traditional IRA. Next on the list of preferences for contributions is a traditional IRA. It is a lower priority than 401(k) contributions if you have a limited amount of money to set aside -- and who doesn’t face a limit? -- mainly because you can’t get a company match. And unlike with a Roth IRA, you won’t bump into any income limits on the size of contributions. But there are income-based limits on your deductions. And that can have the same deterrent impact, discouraging you from putting money in. If you’re covered by a retirement plan like a 401(k) at work, you get no deduction on your traditional IRA if your MAGI is $71,000 or more in 2016. The amount you can deduct starts to fall as your MAGI rises above $61,000. For married joint filers, if either is covered at work, the phaseout range is $98,000 to $118,000. If your MAGI is below those phaseout ranges, you can take full deductions. And if you’re not covered by an employer’s retirement plan, traditional IRA contributions are deductible regardless of your income.
And there’s one more potential advantage. Once you sell assets to take money out, your taxes are on short- or long-term capital gains. On long-term gains, the tax rate is 15%. If you’re in the top tax bracket, your top rate on cap gains is 20%. That beats paying tax on traditional IRA withdrawals at ordinary income rates, which this year can be as high as 39.6%. Tails of Two Cities day planer 10th Anniversary Edition
This year will be the 10th Anniversary Edition of Texarkana Animal League’s Tails of Two Cities Day Planner. Yet we continue to encounter people who express disappointment that they haven’t heard of it in years past. This year’s day planner success matters more than any past year as we are currently remodeling a building that will serve as our office and a pet adoption center. We have taken a leap of faith and trust the community will support us in this endeavor. We have many plans for the animal loving community we serve, in addition to our current community and animal welfare programs. Watch for upcoming announcements and details of our plans for this new location. We are currently selling pages for the 2017 Tails of Two Cities Day Planner and are anxious to spread the word as widely as possible. If you are reading this article, please take a minute to consider sharing the word of our day planner with someone by handing them a copy of ALT 074 ALT Magazine | July 2016
Magazine and referring them to this article. Applications can be downloaded from our website at www.texarkanaanimalleague. org. The day planner is our major annual fundraiser and provides funds for multiple community and animal welfare services. In 2015, we issued 295 certificates under our Spay/ Neuter Assistance Program (SNAP) at a cost of $46,701.04. Funds required for the Dog and Cat foster program totaled
$54,287.68, and our member rescues received $7,000 via our Rescue Assistance Program (RAP). We also provided vaccinations and medication to the Animal Care and Adoption Center at a cost of $9,104.15 and assisted community members with vet expenses they could not afford in the amount of $3,651.25.
