Once an underground star in his hometown of Amsterdam, where fans scoured the streets to tear down his club posters, Parra’s work is now treasured by a new generation of design fanatics worldwide. The natural, self taught, illustrator / designer / typographer grew up surrounded by his artist father’s work, the colour, oil paint, wood and Rubenesque paintings forming an early influence. Further influential ingredients came as he immersed himself in the early nineties skateboard and music scenes. In this world, his pop culture sampling & dark sarcasm found an eager new audience and the perfect way to get his work off the page and into the world around him. His first solo gallery show, “Jobs I did for friends for under £100” took place in London in March 2005 and sold out in the first few hours, mostly through word of mouth. At this time he started working with Big Active, the London based creative management team, and his work found an unexpected new home as collaborations with commercial clients presented themselves. Now accepting a select handfull of commercial design jobs every year, he still prefers to make the bulk of his output flyers, posters & identities for friends & admirers, making his work available for everyone to use, keep or discard as they wish. Hugely prolific, Parra regularly exhibits his work internationally and designs his own new wave clothing label, Rockwell Clothing, launched in 2000 and stocked worldwide.
Hace un tiempo era una estrella underground de Ámsterdam, su ciudad natal, donde los fans peinaban las calles para arrancar sus pósters de clubs. Ahora, el trabajo de Parra es atesorado por una nueva generación de fanáticos del diseño de todo el mundo. El natural, autodidacta, ilustrador / diseñador / tipógrafo creció rodeado por el trabajo de su padre; el color, la pintura al óleo, la madera y las pinturas de Rubenesque fueron una influencia temprana.
