Message from the President

1 Eid Al-Adha is one of the most important days of the Islamic calendar. On this day we commemorate the acts of obedience and submission performed by Prophet Ibrahim and his family when he was commanded to take Hajar and their son Ismail to an uninhabited, barren, distant land and leave them there alone. Eid- ul-Adha enjoys special significance because the Day of Sacrifice marks the climax of Hajj or Pilgrimage, the fifth pillar of Islam. It is a symbol of obedience and signifies submission to Allah. On behalf of the Executive Committee of Muslims Australia - AFIC, I would like to take this opportunity to wish you “HAPPY EID MUBARAK” with love and best wishes. May Allah the Almighty accept our good deeds, May Allah (swt) on this occasion fill our life with happiness, our heart with love, our soul with spiritual and our mind with wisdom. Remember that Eid Al Adha is a day of sacrifice and commitment to Allah's orders. Let us also make a concerted effort to help all people who are suffering or who are in difficulty and may Allah SWT help us to lessen their load. May Allah bless us on this day, help all the oppressed amongst us and strengthen the Ummah of Rasoolullah (saws), Ameen. To all those brothers and sisters who have made this journey of a lifetime, I would like to wish Hajj Mabroor; I pray for their success and rewards and look forward to their safe return, Insha'Allah! Kul Amm untum Be Khair. Salamat Hari Raya. Bayramınız Mübarek Olsun. Assalaamu Alaikum. Dr Rateb Jneid President-Muslims Australia-AFIC

Grand Master Jemal Hasan’s 9th Dan achievement award celebration Bilal Cleland

dunk1689@gmail.com

The Olympic Martial Arts Centre celebrated Jemal Hasan’s achievement of the Ninth Dan in Taekwondo on Friday 3rd of August. Located at 1/1497 Sydney Road, Campbellfield, this centre

has a team of 20 instructors as well as a Junior Leadership team, operating 6 days a week with over 120 classes. The Ninth Dan in Taewkondo is a major achievement and as Levent Ozgurler,

Jemal Hasan has been teaching martial arts since the 1970s and has trained about 35,000 youngsters over those years. Jemal has been teaching martial arts since the 1970s and has trained about 35,000 youngsters over those years. Kazim Ates, who spoke at the celebration and who is now a prominent member of the Turkish and Muslim communities, was one of Jemal’s first black belt students. The fact that he is now teaching the children of many of his original students, in some cases their grandchildren, is witness to the type of relationship he has cultivated with those in his care. His achievements are well known. He produced three world kickboxing champions in the 1990s, Gurkan Ozkan, Tibet Hamza and Baris Nezif. He trained his son Burak who represented Australia in Taekwondo at the Beijing Olympic Games in 2008. Two of his students Tumay Hamza and Aydal Ozalp were Taekwondo gold medalists at the 2011 Commonwealth Games in India. Fatma Kaymaz also represented Australia in India in 2011. Jemal has also trained several State and national champions over the years. He now owns a martial arts complex

in Campbellfield which includes two kickboxing rings, large areas for Taekwondo training, separate training areas for the under 5 year olds, a masjid, a study area with carrels, a playground and a large seating area for parents who wish to watch their children train. The centre also runs separate classes for women who prefer them, in self-defence, and martial arts. Jemal has shown his commitment to the community through his actions and is certain that training young people in the martial arts is a road to learning self-control, self-confidence and respect for others. Some young men with undirected energy can find themselves in trouble with others, but Jemal has shown, through the development of his students, that martial arts skills and the discipline associated with those skills, helps produce worthy and responsible members of society. In a recent interview with a Turkish community newspaper Jemal said: “We want the youth to get off their iPads and get onto the kicking pads for them to improve their social skills and become

master of ceremonies at the celebration pointed out, there are only a few hundred who have achieved that level in the world.

more interactive with other people. It is sad to see in this day and age how dependent the new generation has become on technology. Having them train with me gives them an opportunity to break their bad habits and spend quality time on their health and fitness. The life skills and martial arts programs we teach have had a great impact on the character development of our students.” Jemal has built a successful martial arts centre, based upon his own skills and love of Taekwondo. His introduction to this martial art stems from his childhood experience. Living for a time in Larnaca, Cyprus, his family moved to the capital city Lefkosa in 1972 in a time of terrible trouble. Here he came in contact with soldiers who had been taught Taekwondo. This is what he recalled in his recent interview: “There were Turkish Special Forces near where we lived at the time. They had been trained in Taekwondo by a Korean instructor brought specially to Turkey to train these men. When the officers were not around we became friendly with these soldiers on duty.

The soldiers taught me and my friends how to perform side kick, front kick and roundhouse kick. They also showed us how to develop stronger knuckles by hitting the sandbags which were piled up for protection in the streets. This went on until the huge war of 1974 broke out.” Jemal’s experience of war and its consequences mirror the experience of many thousands of Australian immigrants and refugees. It impacted upon his family life, leading to the separation of his parents and years of dependence on others. His mother Feriha held together their family of five boys and two girls in a time of terrible stress. They came to Australia in 1974. Jemal Hasan has demonstrated through his career the benefits to this nation of immigration and the value which can be contributed to this society by people, who through no fault of their own, can become refugees. This runs counter to much of what is being promulgated by certain media today.

HISTORY

The System of Terror in

Colonial Australia There has been an observable tendency for opponents of the rise of white supremacist propaganda, including many Muslims, to attempt to deflate the arrogance of the neofascists with reference to the convict heritage of many Anglo-Australians. They would do well to reflect on the

nature of that convict system and the attitudes of the early settlers. The racists and white supremacists reflect the views of the treasonous “exclusives” who staged our first military coup, rather than those of the emancipists. The early period of transportation, up

the exclusives, lauded still by Australian Tories, were its instigators. The emancipists supported Bligh and several of those who signed a petition in his defence in Van Diemen’s Land were flogged by the Macarthur puppet commander. Governor Macquarie , his replacement, was also a supporter of the emancipists, which enraged the exclusives.

Bilal Cleland

dunk1689@gmail.com

One of those Muslim convicts who arrived in this relatively benign period was Zimran Wriam. He arrived with my great great grandfather Thomas Guy, on The Atlantic in the Third Fleet in 1791. Zimran was an Indian Muslim convict sentenced in 1790 to 7 years transportation for stealing money from a dwelling house above the value of 40/- ($4.00). He is recorded as Timram Uram on the convict lists. My great great grandfather was a highwayman, sentenced to hang but had his sentence commuted to transportation for life. Both Zimran and Thomas remained on Norfolk Island until the first settlement was closed. Thomas and my great great grandmother were shipped to Van Diemen’s Land in 1809 where they were given a land grant to enable them to be self-supporting. Zimran left Norfolk island in 1813 and was also given a land grant of 40 acres. Thomas the highwayman became a police constable in his new home. This period under governors who believed that freed convicts, emancipists, should have equal rights to the free settlers, called ‘exclusives,’ meant that land grants, tickets of leave and appointments to government jobs were open to all. Hatred for the benign attitude to freed convicts taken by Governor Bligh led to a military coup in 1808 by the NSW Corps, the “Rum Corps.” John Macarthur and

Tory Fear of Revolution The exclusives successfully lobbied to have the English Tories appoint Commissioner Bigge in 1819 to examine the government of the Colony of New South Wales. This was a time when repression was the only method considered to deal with crime or dissent. The British ruling class of this time was terrified of revolutionary upheaval. While the major propaganda was about criminality – just like in the State of Victoria in 2018 – the real fear was of political radicalism. Bigge shared this concern. Attacks by Luddites on the new machines which were taking away jobs were frequent from 1812 to 1815. In 1816 a reform meeting in Spa Fields near London was routed by force. In January 1817 the carriage windows of the Prince of Wales were smashed by a mob. In March 1817 a march of blanket carrying weavers from Manchester demanding reform, was dispersed by force. In June 1817 there was an uprising of textile workers was violently suppressed and 30 were transported to Australia while 3 were hanged for treason. In August 1819 there was what became called the Peterloo Massacre where a meeting of 60,000 people calling for constitutional reform was attacked by the military with 11 killed and 400 wounded. This was followed by the usual Tory response of intensified repression. The Six Acts of 1819 were passed: “public meetings of greater than 50 persons had to have a licence from the local magistrate; any form of drilling was prohibited; the stamp duty on newspapers and pamphlets was increased as a means of damaging the

until the early 1820s, was a relatively benign period, when conditions were not harsh, when tickets of leave were freely granted, along with plots of land and government jobs to qualified individuals amongst the freed convicts.

radical press; laws against blasphemy and seditious libel were clarified and extended.” [Spigelman]

Tory Terror in NSW Bigge, in his report, rejected the granting of land to ex-convicts and the appointing of emancipists to government posts. He proposed what amounted to a privatisation of the convict system. To reduce government expenditure on the convicts, he proposed that more convicts should be assigned (as temporary slaves) to the pastoralists and other private employers, where he assumed they would be subjected to longer hours of hard work each day. Bigge suggested several ways of increasing the “salutary terror” of the convict experience. More floggings, more public hangings and the introduction of pillories and the treadmill followed Bigge. At his suggestion places of secondary punishment were created at Port Macquarie, Moreton Bay, Norfolk Island and Port Arthur. These were places of terror, as bad as Nazi camps in their treatment of prisoners. The Report of the Select Committee on Transportation 1837-38 of the British Parliament, heard evidence of the crimes against humanity being perpetrated in them. “Sir Frances Forbes, chief-justice of Australia, stated in a letter to Mr Amos on the subject of transportation that ‘The experience furnished by these penal settlements has proved that transportation is capable of being carried to an extent of suffering such as to render death desirable, and to induce many prisoners to seek it under its most appalling aspects.’” The Indian and Arab convicts, found guilty of ‘mutiny,’ who arrived in the 1830s would have encountered the full horror of the Bigge system. They included In 1834 Bargatta Lascar, also known as Sheikh Burkhit, born in Calcutta in 1798 was sentenced to fourteen years transportation for mutiny (refusal to work or not obeying an instruction of his employer).. He arrived

in 1834 and was later assigned to work for a Mr J. Philips on his property near Port Macquarie. Siedy Abdullah from Muscat, Oman was sentenced to ten years transportation in 1837 for the crime of mutiny. Hassan Sheikh of Bombay another footman and groom, also convicted of mutiny in Mauritius, was given a life sentence and he arrived in Hobart in 1838. Siedy Maccors Mahomed originally from Bussarah, was another of those sentenced in Mauritius to ten years for mutiny in 1837 and was granted a Certificate of Freedom in 1847. The Muslim convicts disappear from the record. We do not know if they returned home after their sentences or whether they became absorbed into the colonial population. We do know that they were here, witnesses to the injustice of the imperial system of convict transportation. The tendency of the present heirs of the exclusives to exile asylum seekers to places of secondary punishment has a long history in our colonial past.

GIFT OF KINDNESS

Signs your child is

Lying By Jamilah Samian

www.coolmumsuperdad.com

“Tell a lie once and all your truths become questionable,” says a wise person. If a child of yours was caught lying one day, what would you do? If that child has been your pride and joy, your source of motivation to get up and go and do everything that you need to do as a parent, it might feel as if someone has stabbed you from behind. You feel dejected, betrayed, confused. It hurts. A lot. You begin to wonder how long this has been going on. How much of her is the truth, how much is made up. Where on earth have you gone wrong? Discovering that a child is a liar is a parent’s nightmare.

Here are 5 tell-tale signs that your child is lying: 1. Not looking you in the eye. Looking down, sideways or anywhere else; possibly to hide the guilt. 2. Evasive. Not giving easy and direct answers; choosing to reply in a roundabout way. 3. Pausing to reply. Lying means you have to change the facts; you need time to reconstruct events to create a different picture. 4. Nervousness. Fidgeting, blinking, wringing of hands, mumbling. 5. Inconsistent Stories. If what your child says keeps changing, you have reason to doubt your child’s truthfulness. Keep in mind that these are only possible signs, not proof that your child is a liar. Some children and adults do one or more of the above as a matter of habit, nothing to do with lying. If you’re close enough with your child, you’re likely to spot the difference. Lying is not easy for a child, especially if he is not used to it. The brain has to work extra hard in an attempt to conceal the truth. Telling the truth does not require such an effort; you just need to recall what happened to who, where and how. The facts are already there, etched in your mind. Perhaps you have read that all children lie. Some experts claim that at some point, all

children lie; it’s part of their imagination. On the contrary, I have observed that this is not true. Children are honest. It’s not in their nature to tell lies. Children lie for different reasons. Some children have learnt from experience that lying might save them from the possibility of punishment. Some even believe it’s OK to lie and habitually lie because when they’re caught lying, adults around them just laugh it off, dismissing it as a light matter. Some children are so desperate to get attention from their parents that they keep lying. At a subconscious level, they hope that they would get caught and punished. To these children, negative attention is better than no attention at all. Some children lie to protect

AL WASAT 92 ¿ Dhu'l-Hijja 1439 ¿ August 2018 ‫ هـ ¿ آب‬1439 ‫ ¿ ذو الحجة‬92 ‫الوسط‬

someone. If they’re convinced you’re on their side and are just trying to help, they might tell you the truth. Yet others lie because they have been able to get away with it once too often. Over time, it becomes easier to lie when you know people trust you and have no reason to doubt you. In many cases, children lie out of fear, particularly if they have made a mistake. In our eagerness to do well as parents, we may put tremendous pressure on ourselves and our children. When things don’t turn the way we think they should, we might overreact, losing our cool, blaming the child in a most unpleasant way for the smallest error. In this case, the child is simply too terrified to tell the truth. The consequence

of telling the truth is just too painful to deal with. The wise parent knows how important it is to be fair, including making decisions on consequences for mistakes. It isn’t fair to label your sixyear-old ‘irresponsible’ just because he lost his stationery box at school a few times. He could be a victim of bullying but scared out of his wits to tell the truth. It isn’t fair to accuse your 15-year-old of being useless when she fails her Geography paper without trying to understand what actually transpired. What do you do if your child is proven to lie? Lying means broken trust. Trust is earned, not given. Now that trust has been broken, you need to create opportunities for him to earn your trust again.

It will take time, but everyone deserves a second chance to prove that they can start anew.

Finding You... stepping into your own miracle

By Princess Lakshman (Sister Iqra) Welcome to my new selfcare column, Finding You... stepping into your own miracle. Let us explore the MIND (which is NOT your brain, by the way). The human mind works on two levels - the conscious and the subconscious. The conscious mind is responsible for your awareness at the moment - for example, right now you are aware that you are reading this column. The subconscious mind is the storage area. It is a reservoir of every single sound and visual the body experiences. It holds 100% of everything for the conscious

mind to tap into and access. Self-talk such as “I am fat”, “I’m ugly”, “I’m not worthy” are thought patterns influenced by how we perceive ourselves in childhood because of how other people perceived us and imposed those perceptions on us. These get stored in the subconscious mind which governs our daily reactions and responses. Pause for a moment and reflect on your own behaviours, thought patterns and self-talk...can you connect the dots and trace them back to your child self? Next time, we will explore how you can alter the negative patterns by altering your subconscious mind’s activity. Till then, take care of yourselves and spread joy.

My Journey as

A Muslim Law Student Why Law? It is a question that opens the eyes of many individuals in our community. When I tell Muslims that I currently study law and explain that my aim is to make a change in the lives of others… I always receive a positive reaction, which inspires me to continue my studies and become a future Lawyer that will be making a difference within our Muslim community. That is why I have decided to join the Muslim Legal Network Student Committee.

By Esra Chaouk

Bachelor of Law and Business Student esra.chaouk@hotmail.com

The Muslim Legal Network (MLN) is a professional association of legal practitioners and law students who are seeking to make a positive difference in society. Its aims include empowering disadvantaged individuals and the community with improved access to justice, tackling barriers to professional success and helping members reach their potential, thereby enabling them to contribute to the community in a greater capacity. To improve access to justice, MLN runs a legal referral service that can help you identify free or low-cost options for legal services. MLN also delivers appropriately tailored community legal education events to the Muslim community to empower them with knowledge of their legal rights. On [Date], The MLN formed the inaugural MLN Student Committee (MLNSC) to help empower Muslim law students to reach their potential and become an integral part of the MLN. The

MLNSC facilitates networking amongst experienced Muslim Legal Professionals and law students to build a culture of mentoring and mutual support. It also provides an opportunity for students to take on key responsibilities and roles within the MLN on a pathway to becoming future leaders of the Muslim community and the legal profession. As a Law student and after hearing about the team, I did not know what to expect. However, once I attended the meeting, it gave me some hope to make a positive impact to the community

and the profession. It showed me that this committee will give its members an ability to reach their true potential. These meetings are held once a month at the Law Institute of Victoria. The meetings will be chaired by President and Melbourne lawyer, Mr Jazeer Nijamudeen, until the MLNSC elects a Chair from among the Committee who will also become the key voice of students on the MLN Committee of Management. So why don’t we hear what you Law students out there have to say? Why not join

the MLN today at www. muslimlegalnetwork.com/ membership for future employment opportunities, great networking and a trustworthy team. Phone Fatwa

Phenomenon

Princess Lakshman (Sister Iqra)

“ There are two crucial points to remember before forwarding a message of Islam from your device, “Firstly, fatwas are known to be specific to time and place. There might be Islamic rulings for an Australian context that might not be permissible in another country. Fatwas that may have been appropriate 1000 years ago may not be appropriate today ” Ahmed Azhari, Imam of Darul Uloom Islamic Academy of Brisbane

Social media has transformed this planet into a palm-sized global village. A mere touch of the device’s screen opens a portal to a dimension that may enlighten or deceive, depending on the credibility of the source. Australian Muslims engage on their smartphones daily to access prayer apps, personal banking and social media interactions on Facebook, WhatsApp, Twitter and so on. The ummah is now on the web and this virtual ummah is most vulnerable due to all that is freely available and most times mindlessly shared via the FORWARD arrow button. The shoulds and shouldnots of Islam are being manufactured and released by unknown sources into the world wide web and the virtual Muslim ummah now plays an active part in perpetuating this fitna. An Australian Muslim may

be forwarding to other Australian Muslims a WhatsApp fatwa message that he or she received from Pakistan or Norway. Not only is that fatwa invalid for Australian Muslims, it may become the cause of serious disagreements and fitna among people receiving the forwarded message. According to Ahmed Azhari, Imam of Darul Uloom Islamic Academy of Brisbane, there are two crucial points to remember before forwarding a message of Islam from your device, “Firstly, fatwas are known to be specific to time and place. There might be Islamic rulings for an Australian context that might not be permissible in another country. Fatwas that may have been appropriate 1000 years ago may not be appropriate today. And secondly, many young people today are confused because of the different messages that they are receiving on their phones regarding

rulings on Islam. There are fatwas being issued today in other parts of the world encouraging murder and violence which are being circulated through people’s phones.” Another local Brisbane resident, Mohtashim Ahmed, says, “What worries me is that with the current ‘laws’ if you are not vigilant about what some people send to you, individually or in a group, you might end up with questionable content on your device.” In order to enhance this vigilance, as of July 2018, WhatsApp has an updated feature that identifies all forwarded messages. This feature was introduced as a result of rumours that were forwarded via WhatsApp in India leading to murders of innocent children. Australian Muslims can now instal an updated version of WhatsApp to ensure they are thinking before forwarding a forwarded message and

are more mindful in deciding whether to open or delete a forwarded message. From an Islamic perspective, Mufti Menk has wise words for us to ponder on. In one of his lectures entitled Islam and Social Media, he said, “People are on social networks for different reasons. Some are there to spread goodness. Others are there to have just fun. And some are there to con you and to dupe you and others are there just to abuse you. So be careful. Let us not be from amongst those who are doing wrong...spread the message of goodness whenever we have a chance and in whatever way we can for as long as it is thought of quite clearly and it is the best chosen method. As Allah Subhana Watala says, When you call towards the path of the Almighty, choose the most wise of all methods. Surat Nahl, Qu’ran 16:125.”

Best wishes to the Muslim community on the auspicious occasion of Eid Al Adha.

How to Implement The First Ten Days of Hajj in Our Lives Aslam Abdullah Islami City.

Why are the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah more sacred than any other days? Dhul Hijjah, the last month of Islamic lunar calendar has begun. On the tenth of this month, Muslims all over the world would commemorate Prophet Ibrahim’s call to universal brotherhood and sisterhood and relive the sacrifices offered by mother Hajjar and her son Ismail. These days are defined as the best days of the year.

Significance of The First Ten Days 1. In these days, the idea of the oneness of God and oneness of humanity was introduced by the family of Prophet Ibrahim (PBUH) through offering sacrifices. 2. In these days, a vision of creating a community based on their devotion and prayer to God was promoted by the family of Prophet Ibrahim. 3. In these days, a call was made by Prophet Ibrahim to constantly strive to win over the hearts of people through learning about them and serving them. 4. In these days, the family of prophet Ibrahim proved through their living style that constant struggle is the essence of human existence. In the Holy Qur’an Allah reminds us about the prayer of Prophet Ibrahim, which epitomizes the spirit and purpose of Hajj. In the prayer Prophet Ibrahim prays to Allah by saying, “O our Lord! surely I have settled a part of my offspring in a valley unproductive of fruit near Thy Sacred House, our Lord! that they may keep up prayer; therefore make the hearts of people incline towards them and provide them with fruits; haply they may be grateful.” (14:37) We can live by this spirit of Hajj anywhere in the world as only 3 million people would be in Makkah to personally perform the rituals associated with the pilgrimage.

Best wishes to everyone celebrating the blessings of Eid. Wishing you and your family peace and happiness.

Muslimah Mind Matters Self-Care workshop

Pledges For The First Ten Days We can live the spirit of Hajj by: 1. Pledging to remove all traces of racism and bigotry from our hearts and minds. 2. Pledging to ourselves to identify with the rest of the humanity. 3. Pledging to constantly struggle for the improvement of all aspects of our lives. 4. Pledging that we would remain grateful to God by not wasting his resources in any sense of the term. It is this spirit that was the real intent of this great institution and it is this spirit that each one of us can participate. For that you do not have to be present in Makkah only. But pledge is not enough, although it is the first step towards the direction of the spirit of Hajj. AL WASAT 92 ¿ Dhu'l-Hijja 1439 ¿ August 2018 ‫ هـ ¿ آب‬1439 ‫ ¿ ذو الحجة‬92 ‫الوسط‬

RACISM IS NEVER ACCEPTABLE Media Release Robib Scott MP Minister for Multicultural Affair Public consultation sessions will be held across Melbourne and regional Victoria over the coming weeks as part of the ongoing delivery of the Andrews Labor Government’s Anti-Racism Action Plan. For almost a fifth of Victorians, racism and race-based discrimination are a part of daily life. This has a significant impact on people’s mental and physical health, as well as their capacity to participate in the economic, social and cultural life of Victoria. To combat this discrimination, the Labor Government is rolling out a range of initiatives to proactively prevent and respond to racism in Victoria, and reenforce the message that racism is never acceptable. These include initiatives that reduce barriers to reporting experiences of racism and racial discrimination and respond to Islamophobia and Antisemitism. A range of initiatives will

also be rolled out across regional Victoria in partnership with the Australian Multicultural Foundation. A series of public sessions will be held in across Victoria to promote the action plan and see feedback from Victorians – particularly multicultural communities. Sessions will be held in Coburg, Kensington, St Albans, Broadmeadows and Dandenong, as well as in regional centres such as Ararat, Bendigo, Morwell and Shepparton. The Labor Government is also working with businesses and community organisations to showcase Victoria’s strong social cohesion and vibrant, welcoming multicultural society. “The most multicultural places in the world – almost half of all Victorians were born overseas or have a parent that was. Racism has no place here.” “Our action plan is about ensure that all Victorians feel like – and know – that they belong in our society.” “I encourage all Victorians to have their say, speak from their experiences and help us strengthen our fight against racial discrimination.” Minister for Multicultural Affairs Robin Scott said.

Voting now open for Pick My Project Thursday 16 August 2018 There’s $30 million in funding available for project ideas through the Victorian Government’s community grants program, Pick My Project, and communities are encouraged to have their say with voting now open. Victorians aged 16 and over can vote for their favourite project ideas in their local community. Voting is open until 5pm, Monday 17 September 2018. Project ideas range from community gardens, sporting facility upgrades, technology hubs and arts festivals. Voters can visit the Pick My Project website (pickmyproject.vic.gov.au) to register and vote for their three favourite project ideas in their local community. Voters can only pick one local community and this can be the community they live or work in, or have a strong connection to. Project ideas with the most votes in each of the Victorian Government’s metropolitan and regional partnership

areas will be invited to enter into an agreement for their project, with between $20,000 and $200,000 available for each project idea. In order to support Victorians with the online process, the Pick My Project team will: • Provide face-to-face ‘help desks’ across Victoria to demonstrate the voting process. • Equip library and Neighbourhood House staff across the state to support community members with voting. • Provide a step-by-step instructional video. • Provide phone, email and social media support through a dedicated contact centre – particularly supporting voting for Victorians without access to a mobile phone. For more information, visit pickmyproject.vic.gov.au, contact us on 1800 797 818 or contact@pickmyproject. vic.gov.au, or log on to our Facebook page at facebook.com/pickmyproject.

MESSAGE FROM THE MINISTER

I am delighted to send my best wishes to Victoria’s Muslim community as you come together to observe Eid al-Adha and the conclusion of the annual Hajj pilgrimage to Mecca. Eid al-Adha is a time when friends, family and the community come together – in both prayer and celebration – to remember the trials and triumphs of the Prophet Abraham and reflect on the importance of sacrifice. The Victorian Government acknowledges the spiritual significance of Eid al-Adha to our Muslim community and the importance of faith in fostering a strong sense of belonging in our state. On behalf of the Victorian Government, I extend my warmest wishes to those taking part in Eid al-Adha celebrations here in Victoria, and around the world. Eid Mubarak.

Multicultural Community Dinner Perrett MP & Burke MP

CCN- Brisbane The Hon Graham Perrett, Member for Moreton, hosted over 200 locals and community groups at Michael’s Oriental for a Multicultural Community Dinner “to celebrate what makes the Southside so wonderful.” The special guest speaker, Hon Tony Burke MP, Shadow Minister for Citizenship and Multicultural Australia spoke about the importance of always staying united, as a community. Mr Perrett said:

The vibrancy of our community is something to be proud of. We see time and time again, multiculturalism under attack from the far right, fringe political parties and our own LNP Government. It’s my commitment to you that I will never entertain voices that seek to divide us and make us weaker. We’ve seen very recently our local community come under threat. I know the Southside community is stronger than these divisive voices. The Southside that so many of us love and call home has more that unites us than divides us..

INTERVIEW

Yasseen Musa:

Multicultural Community Ambassador of North Melbourne footy club Mr. Yasseen Musa arrived in Australia 25 years ago and since that time he worked hard to lobby the Australian government to get African refugees to Australia under humanitarian program. He has been volunteering for community in multifaceted areas since then. Ahmed Shereef - Melbourne Can you provide a picture of the Victorian government’s efforts in sports activities, specifically in Melbourne? The Government of Victoria works to explain the sports objectives in

one person from each ethnic group and I was one of those where I was active in the Eritrean community in the areas of North Melbourne, Flemington, Carlton, and Kensington. Where those areas have a variety of the sports activities.

which the various ethnicities living in Australia. Australia is a multi-national and diverse country which differs from other countries as it operates in the field of unity within the framework of enlightenment. Therefore it is necessary to state the goals of the sports programs, which are active by 18 Africans of different ethnicities, including the Arab and African ethnicities. The program began five years ago and even though it did not receive a huge response, but recently, five years ago it was decided to choose

Also the presence of population plays an important role. Due to those reasons I was chosen to be an ambassador in the sport activities of the ethnical communities this year this year. What are the reasons for the lack of appearance of sports figures at the level of Victoria? However, there is a problem in the absence of athletes from the African communities in particular. I would like to point out that the management of sports

activities in this country affects the adoption of the programs of the African communities and thus it is difficult to obtain sites developed at the individual level or at the level of management. As it was distributed on the ethnical

groups. Therefore, the process of rising and developing isn’t as easy because it needs to upgrade the way of thinking and management and planning. When we compare our sports activities with other communities, we find there is a very large gap. For example, our view of sport activities is indeed very different. Although the evidence shows us that there are many various facts, but we do not even benefit from the guidance and advice provided to us as individuals or as a community, in the activities that we provide in the sports field as an African community. sence I invite the African communities and some of the Arab communities to pay attention to them so that they can compete in the desired manner and become part of activities that are popular, especially as they find interest by the government and the state of Victoria, to use the green playgrounds located throughout the city of Melbourne. And I personally think that people should take that opportunity. As entering the competition boosts a person’s confidence as well as it builds the sports interests’ side, where sport today became an investment of time. I ask parents to provide their kids with necessary information about the sport, especially the sports that can improve their skills. As participating in sports has

now become a large part of the school’s curriculum. Can you give us a practical picture of the opportunities available to African communities’ sports in the city of Melbourne? On our part, as a community’s supervisor and a follow-up for African sports activities, we are always trying to open new ways in how to take advantage of the opportunities and not to look at sport as if it’s just a game. But you have to be aware of its controls and its many requirements. For example there is a great opportunity for young people aged 15 to 30 to become one of the coaches in the country, by receiving a special course. Note that the course is free and is about one hour a week, where it is specialized to train and teach the methods and techniques of modern arbitration of soccer and once the course ends there will be a testing process and after it is done. The Employment of this young man or young woman starts immediately in the special communities. In this case I mean Southern Sudan community who were able to benefit from all the opportunities available to him. What about other activities you have done recently? In the current Multicultural Community Ambassador for AFL. I was recognised by AFL as Multicultural Community Ambassador of the Year 2013 for my support to AFL and African Community. I have played the sports coordinator for the Fun in the Aussies Sun Festival 2013 and 2014 (to be held in Nov 2014) to bring African Youth together to work with Police members. Currently leads the community safety group to evening &

night foot patrolling/walk with Victoria Police & African community members in the Flemington, Kensington, North Melbourne Housing Estates, Stations, flats, main roads in the local area. This has made the local area safe and trust on police I increased from the community. During the past period have you had many other activities?

community and the African Community. Established an African soccer team for the African youth to join the team. In this project I worked as volunteer at Flemington with the Jesuit Social Services for more than 5 years. I am a pioneer volunteer who establishes help the African local community to have Multicultural EID festivals since 7 years ago which has continued every year

communities, established a relation with the Victorian police by doing a soccer tournament every year with the youth and AFP at the Multicultural Eid festival in Flemington. IN 2009 I established with other friends a homework club for year 9, 10, 11 and 12. I helped the Horn of Africa elderly women’s group in term of driving the bus for them and arranges some services for them.

with larger community participation. They had played a key role to establish u/13 and u/16 soccer teams to give a chance for the kids with single parents. I developed a relationship with these kids with the Essendon footy club, help them to join Aus-kick and with North Melbourne footy club to get them free tickets for footy games. With the team I played major role in getting kids to Majak Daw Outkick program by convincing the parents to join that has started in 2014. In 2006 I established an official North Lions soccer club that had u/12 to participate in a league competition with FFV. In year 2008 the u/12 finished at the top of the ladder and got the premiership cup. In 2008 I became a pioneer to establish Unity Cup with the Australian Federal Police (AFP) and the Essendon footy club to play AFL match during Harmony week between Muslim, Africans, indigenous and Jewish team. Until today, I am the organiser member of this Unity Cup and the event has become a national celebration with team participating from interstate. In 2009, lobby North Melbourne footy club to join unity cup and they did. From 2008 till now and 4 AFL teams joining the unity cup which are Kangaroos, Essendon, Hawthorn and bulldogs. As volunteer with African

As Multicultural Community Ambassador of North Melbourne footy club, helped programs for the African disadvantages to take them to the beach and teach them how to stay safe in the water. Voluntarily helped the North Melbourne footy club, Victorian police, Melbourne city council and Flemington bicycle shop to conduct a bicycle project which teaches the kids the rule of the road safety and give them a free bike. I sit in number of boards in the city of Moonee valley and service provides agencies and police to communicate between African communities and these agencies. I help and mentor many African single mothers, juvenile youths, young African kids on issues like family violence and other unforeseen happenings. I regularly engages with the Australian Taxation Office, DIBP, DHS Housing and organise information session with community members to deliver the settlement information.

In year 2012 established Team Africa footy team and they played at harmony cup which is a footy tournament played between 12 different ethnic backgrounds and also played at unity cup. I have played the key role to link the African community members and Victoria Police and help maintain excellent relationship between police and African communities across Melbourne. I have assisted as the first community group to organise the Cultural Food Project with Victoria Police and African community where cultural food is shared between police and African community members at Flemington police station. Do you have a last word to say through Al Wasat? In conclusion, I would like to thank Al Wasat, for its interest in the issues and affairs of Arab and African communities.
