Palmer United Party candidate Zali Burrows says:

Assylum seekers are the political sacrificial lambs.

By keysar Trad The Labor Government’s ‘PNG vote bait’ is a simplistic policy to appeal to the redneck voters of Australia that are drip fed political propaganda that asylum seekers are a national problem and are threatening our way of life. This is a mere political diversion from both the Labor and Liberal parties to take our attention away from the fact that our country is in deep trouble with health, unemployment, education, economic and poverty issues. If the Government was really serious about stopping the people smuggling trade, why does it not catch these traders from Indonesia? If thousands of asylum seekers know how to find passage on a boat, why can’t our Government? We are signatories to international conventions relating to fundamental human rights which require the settlement a certain number of refugees in Australia every year. The current PNG policy makes Australia a joke on the world stage and we should be ashamed. Kevin Rudd says ALL boats will be sent to PNG. This is a policy that will cost us $1 billion dollars and women and children will not be sent to PNG. PNG is a very poor country with its own poverty, crime and economic issues.

Why are we burdening the people of PNG in order for the Labor party to be politically popular amongst rednecks? The issue of asylum seekers treated poorly is rampant. They are either declared genuine refugees and have been left to rot in Villawood, lost in red tape, or they are denied procedural fairness with not being afforded legal representation in application and appeal process. Why do we treat those fleeing from persecution as dangerous criminals. One asylum seeker likened waiting in Villawood to being on death row. One does not know when their time has come to be ordered to Manus or PNG or to be returned back to their country to face imprisonment, torture or even death. The refugees want to be accorded their basic human right to work, enjoy their

family, and freedom to vote and to live without fear. Being caged and separated from their family causes many to succumb to mental illness, depression, self harm, and anxiety. Inside Villawood they are encouraged to participate in activities such as Zumba dancing and painting plaster animals for $2. This is an insult to their humanity. Asylum seekers are the political sacrificial lambs in this election. The Government has demonstrated wastefulness and complacency in the serious issue of crime on a national level. Drive-by shootings and gang related crime is thriving due to relaxed boarder controls facilitating the entry of illegal weapons and drugs to our shores,. Illegal weapons entering our shores threaten our way of life, asylum seekers entering our shores don’t. Much of our infrastructure was built by migrant workers and we should welcome all those who will help our economy prosper, it is our moral obligation to do the right thing. It may be politically fashionable to persecute asylum seekers, but it is morally reprehensible. Zali Burrows is the Palmer United Party candidate for the Sydney seat of Blaxland

EGYPTIANS SHOULD NOT ACCEPT A MILITARY COUP

by Thomas Kent and Dr. Berhan Ahmed The willingness of many Egyptians, including the recently-formed, but increasingly powerful Tamerrud (rebellion) young leaders to accept the overthrow (and disappearance) of elected President Mohamed Morsi (Australian newspapers spell it Mursi; there is no accepted transliteration system for Arabic) is very worrying. It is not so simple as that, of course. Morsi himself was increasingly undemocratic. While talking reconciliation, he awarded himself the power to pass executive decisions without review, and to overrule the courts. These decisions, which led to widespread supportive demonstrations (because of suspicion of corruption in the courts themselves) in front of the law courts buildings, should have led to his legal impeachment and removal from power. Indeed, the Constitutional Court met with other judges in November 2012 to consider just this action. However the constitution of Egypt was suspended when President Mubarak was overthrown. And the court, also, made a mistake. They called for demonstrations to support their actions. ‘The United States categorically rejects the false claims propagated by some in Egypt that we are working with specific political parties or movements to dictate how Egypt’s political transition should proceed’* - Barack Obama. This is a lie, of course, or close to a lie. It’s true insofar as the United States government may not have a particular outcome in mind, and cannot dictate one. But they are talking to everybody they can, as in fact they must, and nobody major is going to do anything without their tacit consent. The basis of the problem in Egypt is the power of the military. After (Colonel)

Gamal Abdel Nasser overthrew the monarchy of King Farouk in 1952, he was faced with the problem of what to do with all of these guntoting types. Not having any Holy Grail to send them in search of, and the Ark of the Covenant being safe as everybody knows in Ethiopia, he gave them businesses instead. These businesses now account for 40% of the Egyptian economy and workforce, and the United States obviously worries about the 1.3 billion of military hardware it gives the military each year. The Arab Spring has turned out to be a very mixed bundle- as one might expect. In some cases, it is producing nations that are hobbling towards some kind of genuine democratic system - corrupt, unrepresentative, but a lot better than the dictatorships they replaced. But in countries that already had a democratic system, such as Egypt, protests can also include many people who don’t believe in democracy at all. Recently protests have included guns and shooting. One place guns can come from is the army; but terrorist groups are also buying arms. The trade in refugee organs by Bedouin people smugglers is providing at least $100 million a year, much of which is going on arms and going to groups that will destabilise governments, particularly Hamas. Protests are not always bad. The riots in England following the French revolution, that led to the flight of the King and his ministers from London, eventually resulted in the Electoral reform Act of 1832, an important step in establishing democracy. Without the suffragettes, women would not have got the vote either. But these were all to widen democracy in a state that did not have it. In a democratic state, there is a tacit agreement between everybody as

Top 10 List:

to how far everyone can go. Forces that go beyond this - even to the extent that Pauline Hansen did - are seen as destabilising and dangerous. It is interesting to note that within British history there were widespread protests against the establishment of a standing army and even a police force, as these were both seen by the public as possible instruments for the suppression of the populace. The overthrow of elections by the military in Burma and Fiji were the start of long periods of suppressive laws and military governments. And it’s hard to know how to proceed when a large part of the populace does not believe in democracy and there is a good percentage working actively to undermine it. History shows us that these situations seldom resolve for twenty-forty years. That is how long it takes for the economy to fall into disarray, for the populace to realise that accepting different views is the price of getting rid of violence, and for a second generation of military officers to take power and realise that the country is falling into a pit. In the meantime, there is not much that can be done. Egypt is on a knife edge. The international community should be leaning on the military to make sure that democracy is maintained. They should totally condemn all undemocratic actions, by whomever taken. They should act to cut off the major source of income for the destabilising forces, which comes from drug and organ smuggling. But if things go badly, it may take many years for solutions to emerge. The West may bear the burden of that for a long time. President Obama should make sure he knows what his representatives are doing. * Melbourne Age, 8 July 2013.

Australian Government Review of the Taxation Treatment of Islamic Finance Products Hyder Gulam

Al wasat Legal Editor

Salaams All, Most readers would be well aware that on 26 April 2010, the then Rudd Government announced the Board of Taxation (‘Board’) would be undertaking a comprehensive review of Australia’s tax laws to ensure that, wherever possible, they do not inhibit the expansion of Islamic finance, banking and insurance products. In late October 2010, the Board announced the release of a discussion paper on the Board’s review of the taxation treatment of Islamic finance, banking and insurance products. The Board was asked to: • Identify impediments in current Australian tax laws (at the Commonwealth, State and Territory level) to the development and provision of Islamic financial products in Australia; • Examine the tax policy response to the development of Islamic financial products in other jurisdictions (including the United Kingdom, France, South Korea and relevant Asian jurisdictions); and • Make recommendations (for Commonwealth tax laws) and findings (for State and Territory tax laws) that will ensure, wherever possible, that Islamic financial products have parity of tax treatment with conventional products. With the demise of Kevin Rudd as the Prime Minister, there was a distinct lack of interest by the former Government. However, with the return of Prime Minister Rudd and Chris Bowen to the helms of Government, there is renewed hope that this project will release the final paper, which was submitted to Government nearly 3 years ago. As a refresher for readers, the principles underlying Islamic Banking & Finance as derived from the Shariah are: • Prohibition of paying and receiving interest: Interest must not be charged or paid on any financial transaction. • Prohibition of uncertainty or speculation: Uncertainty in contractual terms and conditions is forbidden. However, risk taking is allowed when all the terms and conditions are clear and known to all parties. • Prohibition of financing certain economic sectors: Financing of industries deemed unlawful by Shariah – such as weapons, pork and gambling – is forbidden. • Principle of profit and loss sharing: Parties to a financial transaction must share in risks and rewards attached to it. • Principle of asset backing: Each financial transaction must refer to tangible, identifiable underlying asset. The Board looked at the tax treatment of Islamic finance products based on their economic substance rather than their form. Where an Islamic finance product is economically equivalent to a conventional finance product, the tax treatment of the two products should be the same. I have no doubts that any moves to ensure a level playing field for Islamic banking and Takaful product would conclude that amendments to Australian tax law are required. The key question is whether any adjustments can be made to existing tax frameworks rather than the development of specific provisions directed solely at Islamic finance products. The later would no doubt have the Islamophobes up in arms based on their myopic ignorance, and lack of foresight about Australia’s national interest, especially in these economically uncertain times with jobs lay offs. Why is this issue so important for Australia? 1.Attracting foreign Islamic banks and conventional banks with Islamic windows to establish operations in Australia; 2.Attracting investment in Australian assets and businesses from overseas Shariah investors and tapping into new funding sources through sukuk and other securitised issues; 3.Australian based banks providing from Australia a range of Shariah compliant investment and financing products and services to Islamic banks, corporations, institutions and high net worth individuals in the Asia Pacific and the Gulf regions; 4.Fund managers establishing Shariah compliant funds for Asian and Gulf institutional and high net worth individual investors; 5.Local exchanges providing Islamic listings platforms for domestic and international issues of Shariah compliant instruments; and 6.Australian based financial firms, professional services providers and educational institutions exporting their services into Asia and the Gulf. Till next time, Masalama Hyder

The hardly Camouflaged Egyptian coup The camouflaged coup had to engineer the numbers to make it look like General Sisi was really responding to the will of the people. Tony Blair – whose precise information over WMD’s in Iraq is no secret – told us that there were 17 million Egyptians on the streets. Then, he who must be believed, the US State Department told us there were 22 million. Then, the Democracy Index informed us that there were 30 million. The final bid went to Mona Makram Ebeed who told a US audience that there were more than 30 million protesting against Morsi. The population of Egypt is about 90 Million. If you take away the Morsi staunch supporters (about 11 millions based on the constitutional referendum), the children, elderly and the nonpoliticised, you can quickly see the comical side of the numbers claimed. Off course Aljazeera came to the rescue again and brought an estimation expert who told us that no more than 1.5 million can possibly exist in Tahreer square. The pre-plotted coup camouflaged as a civilian president and vice president (Mr Elbaradei whose hands has Iraqi blood). The coup did not forget religious legitimacy

to speak against the coup. Few days later we had the massacre of the prostrators (83 dead) and few days ago we had the second massacre (200 dead and 4500 injured in 3 hours). I have a childhood friend who was shot in his lungs in the first massacre. The bullet missed his heart by a centimetre and he tells me the story how the shooting started in the last prostration of their morning prayers. It is possible to argue about the efficacy of Morsi as a president and possibly the efficacy of the Freedom and Justice Party as a majority party; but what is undisputed is that what happened in Egypt was a coup and it was intended to carve Islamist from power and thwart their project from existence. From day one as president, Morsi, his wife and children was on the receiving end of the most filthy media regurgitation. Media hurled abuses at him and his wife who is dressed in a traditional Islamic dress. Islamophobia showed its ugly face in Egypt. Police force and constitutional courts stood against him. Electricity and fuel was intentionally stopped and sold in black markets to topple the government. Morsi put his hand into the wasp nest of corruption and those who benefitted came

Mohammad Helmy by getting endorsements from the head of Alazhar (SheIK Ahmed El Tayeb and the head of the Egyptian Church. It is no secret that Sh Eltayeb was appointed by Mubarak in Al-Azhar and was in the policy making committee of his party. All political deals are made with Gen Sisi – not the president. The Egyptian well known intelligent humour decided to call the coup president – Tartour – meaning a puppet but literally means “a clown’s hat”. Minutes after the coup Islamic channels were shut - some while on air. To date, 1800 have been detained including leaders of the Muslim Brotherhood, Al Wasat Party and anyone else who dared

out to defend their privileges. The biggest disappointment for me is how some Secularists and socialists were able to step on their basic human values in precedence of not seeing an Islamist succeed in running Egypt. Millions are again on the streets determined to have Morsi back in power. And while some Islamist leaders are willing to compromise to reach a diplomatic settlement, the street is absolutely not willing to move one inch on their demands of going back to pre 3rd of July date. Those on the streets have taught the world a lesson in perseverance and patience. The people in the streets in Egypt realise the regional implications of a retardation of Egypt’s freedom of choice. They realise the implications on Tunisia, Turkey, Libya, Syria and Palestine. They remember the military coups in Turkey (1980) and Algeria (1991) against a democratically elected Islamic government. They remember what happened in Gaza and they are determined to defend their choice till the last drop of their blood.

Cath Bowtell, Labor candidate for the Federal seat of Melbourne My name is Cath Bowtell, and I am asking you to vote for me, and for Labor, in the election on 7 September. I am proud to stand for the Labor Party which supports a multicultural, multi-faith community. Labor has a strong record of working closely with the Islamic community in inner city Melbourne. I am proud that it was a Labor Prime Minister, Kevin Rudd, who appointed Australia’a first Muslin Minister, Ed Husic. Only Labor will build new public housing, support our local schools with more funding, and work for better

health and aged care. Our Better Schools plan will put more money to all schools, with additional funding based on the needs of the children, regardless of whether the school is a a government school or a religious school. In the past 6 years the Rudd Labor government has built and renovated public housing in Melbourne, and has put more money into health and aged care. The Islamic community is an integral part of a strong, smart and dynamic Melbourne. I value the contribution of Melbourne’s Islamic communities to our businesses, our universities and our schools, to public life

and to our diverse and vibrant city and our neighbourhoods. I have had the opportunity to support the work of organisations that support Islamic youth through sport and the arts. Just this week Labor has announced a $55,000 grant to the Islamic Council of Victoria to be put towards a facility kitchen upgrade and additional essential equipment. If elected I will work closely with the Melbourne Islamic community to ensure that government and community work together to ensure that the continued success of the Islamic community in Melbourne.

To win the votes of the African-Australian communities on 7 September 2013 federal election; the following issues are important. Whichever party wins the forthcoming electoral contest; there are ten main things that the African-Australian communities are looking for. 1) The leaders of the African-Australian communities to participate and advise on policy issues regarding their communities at all levels of government. The African-Australian communities still suffer from top-down plans imposed without consultation, producing unrealistic, unworkable schemes. The communities and their leaders stand ready to provide the advice and support that comes from their close involvement with the grassroots. This is the only way to produce practicable, effective planning. 2) Employment The greatest problem within the emerging communities is the high levels of unemployment, which comes from barriers to employment such as inappropriate training, misunderstanding, and implicit racism. Without employment, there is the risk of the creation of a permanent underclass. These are the most important programs to design and support for new settlers in Australia “Employment equals settlement”. 3) Youth issues The young people in new and emerging communities face, as they have always faced, the risks of exposure to drugs, vandalism, and exploitation by those who would drive them to lives of crime. This can only be combated by Youth Services that concentrate on building strong family values and community networks. 4)Support rather than punitive approaches to disaffection The communities are alert to, and greatly fear, that their young people could be led by demoralisation and dissatisfaction into involvement with extremism and terrorism. To combat this requires support, not continual surveillance and the creation of fear, which will push young people towards radicalisation. 5) Refugee and Asylum seekers Support The communities are looking for humane answers to refugee and asylum seekers questions. Our families, loved ones, close friends are living in often desperate and life-threatening conditions overseas. This affects our ability to work in freedom and happiness and contribute towards our loved new home. We need to maintain and expand the family reunion program, and for the government to find some workable, humane solution for refugees and asylum seekers arrivals. 6) Support for sporting and arts programs The main ways for our young people to develop morale and hope, are through sporting programs. Over the centuries, sport has shown itself as a away to integrate young people and to teach them their value, and the value of co-operation and discipline. Support for our young actors, musicians and other arts people also helps us find a voice, to define ourselves, and promote positive perspectives. 7) Employment in Australian defence force, Federal police and other government services Moves towards developing employment programs for our people to enter defence force, AFP, public servants and government officials’ advisory body have been moving very slowly. We’d like to see a definite commitment towards intakes from our communities. 8) Encouragement of openness within NGOs We would like to see standards put in place within funding requirements that encourage NGOs also to follow these points - getting advice, consult, working with community leaders, participation and employment, with a concentration on the programs outlined here. 9) Development of public transport infrastructure It is pointless to provide jobs unless there is some means of getting to them. It would be good to see some small, flexible transport solutions, such as more light rail and trams, and the expansion of private minibus services, to enable access to work outside daylight hours. 10) Recognition of the value of the community in building relations with Africa Australia has $50 billion invested in Africa. The members of African communities here speak the languages, know the cultures, and have many contacts, including many with influential people and leaders. This is a goldmine of expertise for Australia. Dr. Berhan Ahmed, Chairperson, African Think Tank E:berhanahmed@iprimus.com.au

SUCCESS STORY Vexatious Intervention Order Application The Muslim Legal Network (MLN) was recently contacted by a client who required urgent assistance for an intervention order hearing that was fixed for a rapidly approaching date in April. The client worked on a casual basis and did not have a permanent job. As a result, he could not afford to engage a lawyer to assist. The MLN’s Legal Referral Service functions as an avenue of support for clients who are disadvantaged. The client’s ex-wife (applicant) applied for an intervention order against the client after two years of no contact. The client claimed that his ex-wife fled with their children and another individual who she later married. In her affidavit, the applicant claimed that the client stole her money, abused, raped and assaulted her on several occasions, all of which the client denied. The claims made against the client could have had serious ramifications on his life if accepted by the court. Abdul Rahman Mohamed Saleh, a lecturer at Victoria Law School who also assists the MLN, took the initiative to support the client by preparing an affidavit. It was hoped that it would assist in getting the other party to withdraw the application but the applicant persisted on pursuing legal action.

As a result of the applicant’s decision to continue with legal action, the client required a lawyer to represent him. The principal solicitor at Amicus Lawyers, a senior member of the Muslim Legal Network, volunteered to act on behalf of the client. He assisted on a pro bono basis due to the client’s disadvantaged situation. After lengthy negotiations with the applicant’s barrister, the Intervention Order application against the client was withdrawn. The principal solicitor notes that the client was ‘ecstatic’ with the support he received and with the outcome of the case. All members of the MLN worked together to achieve the best possible result for the client in a very short period of time. The MLN can only operate with the continued support of dedicated legal practitioners like those who volunteered their time and knowledge in this case to help a person in need. The MLN encourages all Muslim lawyers to work closely with the MLN so that we can improve and expand our services to better serve the Muslim community’s legal needs. If you would like to get involved or be a point of referral for our services, please contact Aseel Sammak on 0406 254 141. For general enquiries, please email us at muslim.legal.network@gmail.com

EID MUBARAK EID AL-FITR It is with great pleasure that I send my warmest greetings to the Muslim community as they celebrate Eid. Ramadan has been a time of fasting and prayer. Ramadan has also been a time to serve the less fortunate, a reminder of the obligations that people have to each other. Australia is a vibrant and successful multicultural nation and Ramadan gives us the opportunity to reflect on the values that we hold in common such as tolerance, generosity and compassion. Iftar dinners are an opportunity for Australian communities to gather and share a meal to celebrate Ramadan in the spirit of mutual respect and harmony. Ramadan traditions are a wonderful way for us to establish community links across diverse cultures and promote greater understanding. I send my best wishes to all celebrating Eid.

ECCV urges ethnic Australians to cast their vote Ethnic Communities’ Council of Victoria The Federal election on Saturday 7 September is fast approaching and ECCV encourages voters from an ethnic background to register to vote if they have not already done so. ECCV Chairperson Joe Caputo, OAM, stresses that voting is both a right and an obligation. “Casting your vote is making use of your right to choose who will be representing you,

your community and local area as well as your state, in the Australian parliament. It’s also compulsory in Australia, so it’s important people are enrolled and attend their polling station in their electorate on the day”. To be able to vote on the day people who haven’t enrolled yet to vote must register by Monday 12 August 2013. All Australian citizens who are 18 years of age and older are required by law to enrol and vote at the upcoming federal election. “Understanding the voting process can be difficult for

people for whom English is a second language or those who have just become Australian citizens and are not familiar with the Australian system of government” said Mr Caputo One way of overcoming these obstacles and being informed is by visiting the Australian Electorate Commission (AEC) website whose factsheets in languages other than English provide useful information on enrolling to vote, steps on the day and other useful information. “It is important that people from an ethnic background are

aware of where to register, how to cast their vote and that they can also vote by post if they are unable to visit the polling station on election day,” explained Mr Caputo. A Most Informative Election Just as it all seemed lost for the Australian Labor Party, the return of Kevin Rudd as Prime Minister has given the party a new lease of life making it competitive in opinion polls. The nexus of the holy month of Ramadan to this year’s federal election has presented tremendous opportunities for politicians as they not only attended one Iftar (nightly breaking of the fast dinner) after another (sometimes two Iftars in the same evening), but some, like those in the South West of Sydney, held their own Iftar. Prime Minister Rudd even made a surprise visit to one such Iftar in the Sydney suburb of punchbowl, he gave a Salam greeting to Muslims who in return gave him a rock star reception. Not to be outdone, a few days later, the leader of the Opposition Tony Abbott showed up to an Iftar in the Sydney suburb of Lidcombe where he also received a rock star reception and cheers to his promises to support a multifaith Australian society. As if to lock in some much needed support from the Muslim community, Foreign Minister Carr asserted his sympathies for the Palestinian people on the day of Eid to the consternation of Israel apologists who were very quick to express their concern. I don’t know where the coalition stands on this issue today, but in earlier weeks, they had threatened academic institutions with withdrawal of all funding if they support the BDS movement. To be fair to the coalition, Tony Abbot’s 22 July 2013 speech to the Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce has ten fewer references to Israel than his speech in July 2010. This is not to say that his support has waned, it merely says that he is watching his words in the hope of reclaiming some support from the Australian Palestinian community after his foreign Affairs spokeswoman declared the coalition’s unquestioning support for Israel. The Labor government went even further pledging ten million dollars to the Lebanese

Keysar Trad

Muslim Association for the construction of an 80 to 100 bed nursing home. To try and influence support away from Lebanese Christian Liberal candidate for Blaxland and Honorary Consul General of Bangladesh Mr. Anthony Khoury the Labor government pledged five million dollars to Christian Lebanese Saint Charbel to build an 80 bed nursing facility and another five million to the Maronite Eparchy of Australia for nursing care facilities. Political spin aside, would this happen if the election was not looming - and so near the festival of Eid? Although we Muslims are supposed to look after our parents in their old age the same way they looked after us when we were little, there does exist a need for nursing facilities and Muslim community organisations have been lobbying for nursing care support for nearly 20 years. Did we as a nation have to save up this money or was it made available now because Labor cares? Of course there is more on the ALP palate; ALP Secretary of Iranian Muslim origin Sam Dastyari is being slotted into Senator Matt Thislethwaite’s position, along with Ed Husic Federal Labor will have two “ALP Muslims”. What Labor is saying is that the Muslim vote in the South West of Sydney is worth ten million dollars along with support for just Palestinian rights and two “Muslim” ALP loyalists on their tickets. As

for the Lebanese Christian vote, this had to be placated with $10 million and a rich history of Christian Lebanese in various parliaments around the country, the most influential of these being Eddie Obeid. I don’t know what they estimate the worth of Muslims in Victoria to be when it comes to a federal election, though Mr. Dastiyari did go there to work on the ALP campaign. To the Coalition, we are openly worth an Iftar and one Muslim candidate in Victoria. At the recent Muslims Australia Iftar which I attended, Coalition Immigration Spokesman Scott Morrison lavished exceptional praise on one Lebanese Muslim Association leader thereby highlighting the strong relations the coalition enjoys with the Lakemba Mosque. This leaves no doubt in my mind that whatever Labor offers, the coalition is likely to match and up the ante with perhaps an extra kitchen sink or two. To the new Palmer United Party, Muslims seem to be worth even more, not only do they have three Muslim lower house candidates John (Mohammad) Nasser for Watson, Nadeem Ashraf for Reid , and Raheam Khan for North Sydney but other candidates including Blaxland’s Zali Burrows have expressed commendable support and concern for minority rights. The only PUP candidate to make an uninformed comment about the faith (in Queensland) was quickly referred to a

disciplinary committee with Mr. Palmer himself calling Muslim leaders to reassert his support for an inclusive multicultural multi-religious Australian society. In the past, Tony Abbott resisted the temptation to censure Cory Bernardi for his Islam-phobic comments. Further, the PUP trumps both the ALP and the Coalition on their refugee policy and in recent times, Mr. Palmer has made some very promising statements on the environment. The Greens appeal to Muslims has always been through their refugee, environment and anti-war policies. In April this year, the Greens beat their drums and blew their pipes over the promotion of a “moderate” Muslim woman to the NSW upper house to replace Cate Faehrmann who vacated her seat to contest a senate position. However, at the last NSW state election, the Australian National Imams Council issued a very clear statement telling Muslims not to vote for the Greens because of their vocal support for same gender unions . However, it remains to be seen whether this makes the Australian Greens a spent force as far as Muslims are concerned. Whilst Australia as a nation is coming of age by showing more acceptance of Muslim Australians, we need to ask ourselves the question: have we, the Muslims of Australia, come of age? Do we know or appreciate our worth and what we can contribute to our adopted nation? In terms of Australia’s budget, grants to Muslim organisations are literally no more than crumbs (in this case, 10 million out of 3.7 billion is less than .003% of the living longer budget to cover more than 2% of Australians). When it comes to the party’s “Muslim” nominations at the federal level, these are party people and party nominations, not nominations by the community, whilst we wish them the very best, these nominations are part of the ALP machinery, they are ALP people and they cannot be said to be representative of a

Muslim constituency. Several months of discussions with the ALP to accept a community nomination have taught me one lesson and that lesson is that the party continues to be parochial, interested predominantly in people it has groomed, or stars such as former Midnight Oil front man Peter Garrett or Sheryl Kernot who was poached from the Australian Democrats. Where does this leave a community which has been kicked around like an uneven political ball for the last twenty or so years? I know that there are three groups within the Australian Muslim community that would rather ignore the entire process, they cite the Muslim foray into politics in Algeria and more recently in Egypt as examples where practicing Muslims will be undermined and overturned even where they win overwhelming public support. These groups need to know that the Australian political landscape is vastly and completely different. Firstly, Muslims cannot win a majority in any Australian parliament to be able to form a government as was the case in the two North African nations. Secondly, there are decisions that are made at parliamentary level that have not been exposed to proper scrutiny in terms of their impact on Australian minorities (especially Australian Muslims) and on the rift they create within society. Thirdly, they need to realise that such an electoral effort needs to be open to other fairminded people in Australia so that we reflect the exact nature of our faith, that we are inclusive people as we had been historically. We need to prove that our presence in parliament is for the good of this nation which I genuinely believe it to be. If we choose to continue to live in Australia, we need to make a positive difference in every sphere, especially the decision-making sphere of parliament and show every Australian that we are people of values and principles even in the arena where we have seen

Changing face of Britain: ‘Muhammad’ is now second most popular boys’ name By: Benjamin Russell

Variations on the name Muhammad have shown to be the second most popular boys’ name in England and Wales

Three different spellings of the name are listed in the top 100 names for boys from the Office for National Statistics. The first most common is Muhammad, which is in 19th place on the table. Mohammed comes 26th and Mohammad is in 60th place. But overall the name was given 7,139 times in 2012, just 29 behind Harry – which took the top spot. Surprisingly certain classic names such as John and Peter did not make the list. In Wales, Jacob was the most popular name for baby boys, replacing Oliver. Across both countries, Riley replaced Joshua

in the top 10 most popular names for baby boys, climbing 5 places from number 13 to number 8. For girls, Amelia replaced Lily as the favorite choice. Mia and Isla replaced Ruby and Grace in the top 10 most popular names for baby girls, climbing 6 and 7 places from numbers 13 and 15 to numbers 7 and 8 respectively. George, the name of the newly born royal baby, was 12th on the boys list, while his other name’s - Alexander and Louis- came in 27th and 81st. William also made the top ten, coming in 9th, while Kate failed to make the girls list. Source: www.express.co.uk

politicians prefer expediency over justice and fairness. In disappointment with contemporary politics, I wrote the following ode to reflect the dichotomy of values that I have witnessed in today’s Machiavellian politician: To me, I epitomize all values and ethics dear My fall from grace may to all be very clear To me, my errors are understandable, in the main Nothing is my fault, I will accept no blame Never will I let you pronounce me with shame Yes, when I am wrong, my values are obscure Because I never err, for I am pure For I am the dichotomy that shapes my weakness My frailty designed in my inhumanity and its darkness Denial has become my only path to happiness I am contorted by public opinion Some I shape, some shape me and my minions Big business and wealthy lobby groups run the show It is always their line that I toe Their moneys returned in grants and concessions you know I am the consummate politician, the epitome of success A good actor as your issues I pretend to address An orator extraordinaire, Making you believe that I care Like a liar debonair Oops, did these “personal” reflections go to air? 10 Tips to Successful Networking During August 2013 the Australian Institute of Management holds its National Networking Week [August 5 to 9]. The initiative acknowledges the importance of learning through networking along with the personal and business development opportunities that also come with effective and genuine networking. I learnt the value of networks very early on; in one of my earliest businesses my work came from networking. When your self employed the reliance you have on networking simply cant be over stated, after all, to pursue entrepreneurial dreams means in no short part that you have to learn how to successfully and effectively network. After all, in my case if I didn’t secure work for my emerging business, I didn’t eat. Ones survival instincts soon kick in and make for a powerful motivator. While that phase may have been many years ago now, the value of networking has only grown and now with tools such as LinkedIn it’s easier than ever before. Having a network with which you can share ideas, knowledge and experience with are just some of the basics today; however, don’t attempt to network if you are not prepared to give more than you will receive. Networking must be done with good and genuine intent, approach networking from the perspective that it’s an opportunity for you to give not what you can extract from it.

Business Editor:

Successful networking is indeed a key pillar to a successful business and a successful professional career, my top 10 (secrets to success) lessons for those wanting to improve their networking capabilities are: • Be clear about what Networking is and how you will approach it • Learn to think on your feet and adapt to circumstances as they change • Pay attention to those around you; learn from those that do it well • Educate yourself on other people’s customs and practices; be culturally aware especially before engaging with

them • Don’t mix your social and business networks, especially online • Be enthusiastic • Be real, genuine interest is never contrived • Maximise your networking opportunities and set time aside each week • Follow up and thank people • Keep track via a system such as LinkedIn to assist in bringing your network to life Networking is, as much about people as anything else, if you don’t have genuine interest in others, don’t network for if you do, you will be remembered for all the wrong reasons. How will you know if your networking efforts are being successful? If you are facilitating connections, opportunities and learning for others your networking efforts are indeed successful..

In the Eyes of a Child... Fatima Dennaoui So much has been happening in our world, from Muslim prisoners being force fed in Guantanamo, to outrage and turmoil in the Muslim World, and to our very own Australia getting in on the action with the closing of the doors on people seeking asylum. Of course, this current state of our world needs no introduction. It seems like not much happiness is going on and unfortunately, it seems to get crueller and crueller by the day. On a ‘happier’ note though, our pains seemed to have been pushed aside with the birth of the Royal Baby not long ago. At not even an hour old, that baby made headlines worldwide and still continues to do so. The level of importance the media and the world allocate to stories such as the royal baby is beyond a joke. While so much tragedy is occurring, it is obvious that this royal blooded baby’s

life is of greater significance than the blood of those thousands of people who are dying every day from starvation, persecution and torture. Civilisation as we know it will not go on if tragedies like this continue. Our world is being destroyed before our eyes and our brothers and sisters are being slaughtered in every corner of the globe. We are reminded over and over again with what is happening but feel that we are too far away to do anything. Wrong. We are missing the point. It is not just about Syria or Egypt or Burma or Palestine anymore. ‘Doing our part’ is not just about sending some charity and clothes their way. We do not realise that this humiliation is a reflection of our failure as a nation. Allah Subhanaahu wa Ta’aalah said in the holy Qur’an: Verily Allah will never change the condition of a people until they change themselves” (13:11) We, as Muslims, cannot sit back and

presume everything will get better because it won’t. The Muslim Nation is like a body. When one part hurts the rest of the body feels it. It does not look like this is happening. We are clearly in a lot of trouble and perhaps these atrocities and the humiliation of Muslims are signs telling us to wake up. So, enough with these ridiculous corruptionfilled weddings. Enough with these all-nighter card and shisha sessions. Enough with the hatred, jealousy and resentment towards one another. Is this the way of life Muhammad (peace be upon him) preached? Is this how you think the dignity and honour of Islam will be restored? Brothers and sisters, focus on what is important and what should be your priority. Bring Islam back to your homes and back into your lives. Live Islam. Spread Islam. Breathe Islam.

Those Wicked Foreign Immigrants and Racist Bigotry Bilal Cleland

bilal42@bigpond.com

Racist opposition to ‘people who do not look like us’ (i.e. of Anglo-Celtic origin), has a long history in this land. It is no longer a dominant theme, but we should be aware of how pervasive it has been until the quite recent past. It was not until the 1972 Whitlam Labor Government that the White Australia Policy was finally wiped out. Hopefully the Department of Immigration is aware of that change. Between the World Wars An obsession with the peopling of the empire with the white race dominated discussion of migration in the period after the Great War. Sir Rider Haggard, author of the immensely popular novels “King Solomon’s Mines” and “Allan Quartermain” had visited Australia in 1916 on behalf of the Royal Colonial Institute to study the question of the emigration from Britain of soldiers and their families at war’s end. It was understood in Britain that when the troops returned “there would be a great industrial disturbance”. The men might not wish to return to their old jobs, many of which had been taken by women anyway. That meant they would emigrate, probably to the United States. As they would be lost to the British Empire if this happened, Britain was seeking possible opportunities in the dominions. The scheme was openly racist. According to Haggard; “The Empire is not over-populated with white folk. In fact, it is greatly under-populated. That being so, it is surely highly desirable that at any sacrifice…the Empire should attempt to retain the sons who have fought for her.” These “sons” did not include non-Anglos who had also fought in the war. Italians, who had fought on the side of the British, did not count as ‘sons’, especially if they were from the south. Nor did Indians, who had died in their thousands for the Empire. The Protestant Federation of the time supported the Big Brother Movement. Its slogan was “Britons for Australia and Australia for Britons.” We can smell its decaying corpse in the present hysteria about boat people and refugees in Australia right now. It should be understood that the general level of racism within Australian society was at a high level during the inter-war period. The relations between the dominant Anglo community and indigenous Australians illustrates the atmosphere of the time. As late as 1929 there were reports of the murders of indigenous Australians in the outback by white pastoralists and their henchmen. The Federal Board of Inquiry constituted to inquire into several such shootings in 1929, consisted only of officials and relied heavily upon the word of “reputable settlers” who were present at the shootings and had apparently taken part. The Australian Board of Missions, a church body, in a resolution sent to the Prime Minister Mr Bruce, expressed its dissatisfaction with both the composition of the Board and its findings. “Among the causes given for the dissatisfaction of the aborigines there had been no reference to injustice and wrongdoing on the part of any whites.” Indeed one of the causes of dissatisfaction, according to the Board of Inquiry was “unattached missionaries wandering from place to place, having no knowledge of blacks and their customs and teaching a doctrine of equality.” This was the only wrongdoing of whites that came up. Echoes of this past history still exist in the culture of a fortunately diminishing section of the Australian population. Nowadays racism is often hidden under the figleaf of Islamophobia, as the old attitudes have been so discredited. We hope that those who are introducing disgusting policies pandering to this redneck cultural survival, will learn their error through the ballot box.

Now in their second year, the Awards for Muslim and nonMuslim Understanding are uncovering great multicultural success stories across the nation. Sponsored through UniSA’s International Centre for Muslim and non-Muslim Understanding and developed in conjunction with the Australia Day Council of South Australia, the national awards publicly acknowledge and reward initiatives and inspirational role models that foster understanding across faiths and culture. Nominations for the 2013 awards opened on August 1 and will close on September 20. UniSA Pro Vice Chancellor for Education, Arts and Social Sciences, Professor Pal Ahluwalia says the awards shine light on the positive gains being made across Australia in intercultural understanding. “Success stories don’t usually make the nightly TV news format, stories about conflict and tension usually takes precedence. “So these awards are all the more important because they allow us to unearth and showcase the respectful, inclusive

and harmonious relationships forged in communities all around the country every day. “In this way, the awards contribute to developing national social harmony and community cohesion.” Last year’s winners were AFL footballer Bachar Houli and Exchange Community Centre, which is nestled in the heart of Kelvin Grove Urban Village near the Brisbane CBD. “The award has the capacity to extend and enhance the work of the International Centre for Muslim and non-Muslim Understanding,” Prof Ahluwalia says. “A goal of the Centre is to create greater cultural understanding through a strong program of public engagement, as well as ongoing research and I think the Awards give us a platform to do just that. “The Awards provide a practical and highprofile means of recognising the individuals and organisations that do so much to break down the walls of ignorance and intolerance in our community.” More information about the awards and how to nominate is available at www.unisa. edu.au/muslim-understanding/award

Melbourne CBD Coloured in yellow for Egypt

Mohammad Helmy Thousands rallied in Melbourne on Sunday to protest the military coup and condemn the state terrorism in Egypt. Protesters started at State Library and ended at Federation Square. In a loud but peaceful rally, the protestors carried the yellow Rabia sign. A sign made by raising four fingers. The sign has become a global icon for solidarity with Egyptian protesters after Prime Minster Erdogan used it in a public address. Rabia means four or fourth in Arabic and hence

the four fingers. Speakers at the rally told of family members who had been martyred by the Egyptian army in the aftermath of the coup and led demonstrators in chants calling “down down Sisi down” and “no to bloodshed”. The demonstrators also called for condemnation of Syrian Bashar Al Assad. The grand Mufti of Australia, Ibrahim Abu Mohamed, addressed the rally and called for an immediate end to violence in Egypt, a condemnation of the military coup in the strongest possible terms, the release of all political prisoners and a halt on attacks on places of worship whether they be

mosques or churches. The large crowd gave the Victorian Police a loud cheer when Adel Salman told the crowd “the Victorian Police is making it easy for us to protest today” as he compared Australia to Egypt and added “Australia is a land of freedom and justice and we demand nothing less for people in Egypt and Syria”. The rally was organized by a coalition of Islamic community organizations and the organizers were inspired by the sense of unity and solidarity across the Muslim community in Melbourne. That diversity was obvious in the rally.

The basis of the 2011 Egyptian revolution was ‘aish, hurriyah wa karama insaniyya (bread, freedom and dignity). The concept of participatory politics was non-existent due to Hosni Mubarak’s authoritarian grip being favoured by the West, as it gave them a false sense of stability in the region (albeit Egypt was in a state of emergency for over four decades). The current course of events, again, reasserts the West’s hypocrisy when it is expected to assert its authority in upholding the legitimacy of a democratically elected government. The rule of law is a complex yet universal mechanism that ensures the orderly operation of societies. Everybody is accountable under the law and when this very order is disrespected, society plunges into chaos and disorder. The Middle East - the blood-filled region where populations are ruled by vampire-like dictators who pillage the people’s

wealth and resources; where rulers and their henchmen are beyond the realm of the law - is a great example of the absence of law and order. In Egypt, grave human rights violations have been committed against civilians resisting illegitimacy brought about by the Egyptian army, bolstered by the shameful support of oil-rich Saudi Arabia ($12 billion), the US ($1.5 billion), and the European Union ($1.3 billion), all of which have been financing the massacres perpetrated by the Egyptian army. When a beret-wearing general, donning fatigues, orders state television to declare the suspension of the Constitution and that the President is no longer President, the term “coup” is fitting like a glove to a hand. Why then, has the Obama administration refused to call a spade a spade, and even gone further to announce that Egypt’s military is “restoring democracy” when it ousted elected President Mohamed Morsi in early July?

Under US law, the Foreign Assistance Act 1961 (section 508) outlaws assistance to any country whose “duly elected head of government is deposed by military coup”. The US has cunningly avoided using the word “coup” which would have triggered US law and required a suspension of military aid according to legal experts. Despite the US recently announcing the temporary suspension of military aid to Egypt, it has fallen short of accepting its legal obligations, according to American law professor Michael C. Dorf and others. The US has accustomed itself to being the belligerent interventionist in the Middle East, prominently establishing institutions and governments inclined to the West in the region. Morsi’s government has been accosted for being an “Islamist” democratic party as it was assumed that the Muslim Brotherhood would be hostile towards the norms of internationalism (i.e. Western values); hence the American Israel Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC), disdainfully stating, “at this point, it’s army or anarchy.” This statement itself should raise alarm bells, as it

demonstrates the irrationality behind Morsi’s ousting. It perpetually assumes that any Islamist government is a foe of the West. Turkey is one of the very few states which has taken an active stance in denouncing the coup, leveraging Turkey to being in “precious isolation” in the region as many OIC state members have sided with the West and have failed to exonerate those inflicting the violence; thus, the Muslim Brotherhood and its proponents have been sidelined, with many afraid to call on injustice. The peaceful rallies in Melbourne and abroad are testament to those who have been martyred in the pursuit of justice. We have become accustomed to the inhumanity and injustice that permeates our world, but we will never accept it. The one who remains silent in the face of falsehood is like the tongueless devil.

My policy re Asylum Seekers The issue of asylum seekers is a national one that need consistent attention, it shouldn’t be brought to the media during election time. It is a human right issue that doesn’t deserve to be traded for voter’s content. According to DLP policy and my own judgment, I will support a policy that guarantee fair onshore processing for asylum seekers, I will also urge Australian legislative and executive bodies to increase humanitarian intake through the United Nations high commission for refugees, and this process will work best in collaboration with countries in the region by working hard to stop people smugglers from endangering human lives.. Why I am running for Calwell seat? • I lost trust in the Major Parties. • Their election promises expire once they are in office. • Their democracy is selective and not inclusive. • They failed to deliver on any issue of national concern. • Their priority is o be in power by any mean. • We need new values and new voices • Together we can make difference. My Promise • I don’t promise to change the political map of Australia. • I promise to listen to you and transfer your message. • I promise to carry your feelings and ambitions and put them in front of the decision making bodies (Parliament). • I promise that your voice will be heard clearly and loudly.

Media Release Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus

STRENGTHENING COMMUNITY HARMONY Attorney-General Mark Dreyfus QC today announced new funding for two programs to build community resilience and prevent radicalisation. The Rudd Labor Government is providing $100,000 to the Australian Multicultural Foundation (AMF) for training based on a manual which the AMF developed for Victoria Police. The Rudd Labor Government is also providing more than $77,000 to the Eelam Tamil Association, Victoria, to provide leadership and empowerment programs for youth who might be susceptible to radicalisation. Mr Dreyfus said both programs would result in a more informed, resilient community. “They provide the information, resources and practical strategies to reduce the threat of violent extremism and

appropriate avenues to seek help where necessary. “I congratulate the Australian Multicultural Foundation and the Eelam Tamil Association for these far-sighted initiatives. “Federal Labor has a strong commitment to strengthening community resilience and supporting associations which work towards a harmonious, tolerant society.” The AMF’s Community Awareness Training Manual: Building Resilience in the Community is designed to help Australian communities to: • Build cohesion and resilience to prevent radicalisation and violent extremism. • Increase awareness and

understanding on processes of radicalisation. • Dispel misconceptions and misinformation regarding counter-terrorism and radicalisation. The AMF proposes to train 20 people – drawn from its Muslim Youth Leadership and Peer to Peer program alumni, the Australian National Imam’s Council and the general community ¬– to deliver the training manual. The AMF will run an intensive training program in Melbourne which will develop the trainers’ knowledge and skills. The trainers will then deliver training through workshops and information

sessions to specific groups that have wide networks in their respective states and territories, including teachers, school principals, religious leaders, community leaders, youth leaders and women’s associations. Eelam Tamil Association’s proposed project, Filling the Gap, will focus on developing community leadership

skills, direct networking and empowerment through education, or organising active participation and networking in community sporting and social activities. MELBOURNE 22 AUGUST 2013 Media Release Attorney - General Dreyfus.

‘CHOOSE TAP’ VISITS THE BACHAR HOULI CUP

Darul Ulum College Choose Tap

Ilim College Choose Tap

Australia – and Melbourne in particular – is blessed with safe, clean tap water that is a healthy and environmentally friendly alternative to drinking bottled water. This was the message given to Muslim school students who participated in the Victorian round of the national Bachar Houli Cup, which is underway in Melbourne this month. The Cup is named after Richmond Footballer, Bachar Houli, who is the first practicing Muslim to play AFL football. It is a national program, played in Victoria, NSW and Western Australia, during the AFL’s Multicultural Round. The program is also supported by the Federal Government and Australia Post, and is targeted at secondary students in years nine and ten. The program provides an opportunity for students from Islamic schools to play in an AFL 9s competition, culminating in the Bachar Houli Cup, which is currently underway in Melbourne. It’s objectives are to: provide an opportunity for Islamic students to engage in AFL; provide an AFL and cultural role model in Bachar Houli; celebrate cultural diversity; and identify AFL talent. Students from three Islamic schools

competing in the second round of the Cup in Melbourne, were last week visited by Yarra Valley Water’s popular ‘Choose Tap’ program and it’s colourful mascot, Tapman. Yarra Valley Water is the largest of Melbourne’s three water corporations providing water supply and sewerage services to over 1.7 million people and over 50,000 businesses in the northern and eastern suburbs of Melbourne. Yarra Valley Water runs ‘Choose Tap’ to promote the health and environmental benefits of choosing tap water as an alternative to bottled water. The program already has over 20,000 footballers across Melbourne’s Eastern and Northern football leagues turned on to tap water to rehydrate during their games. The ‘Choose Tap’ program is also working with multicultural communities to increase awareness of Melbourne’s healthy, clean water. Schools competing in the second round were Darul Ulum College of Victoria in Fawkner, Al Siraat College in Epping, and Ilim College in Dallas. The students were given fresh tap water to rehydrate after their games. They also received showbags containing information, a Choose Tap refillable water bottle and a temporary

Bachar Houli_Al Siraat College Choose Tap

arm tattoo. Tapman was also a big hit with the students and even managed to take a few marks and score some kicks of the football! Bachar said he has a strong preference for choosing tap water. “Our tap water is awesome!” said Bachar. “The water in Melbourne is very, very clean and I think we’re really fortunate; that’s why I choose tap water because our water is so pure. We can safely have a glass of water from the tap, whereas you go overseas and in many countries it’s not safe to drink the water.” Bachar also uses tap water five times a day as part of his cleansing ritual before prayer. “We are taught by our prophet Muhammad not to over-use or waste water, because it could be a valuable resource for someone else,” he said. “It is a minor sin to waste water. So we are encouraged to use no more than a cup of water for our ablutions before prayer.” Why is tap water better? More than a billion people worldwide

do not have access to safe drinking water - but sometimes in Australia we take our quality tap water for granted. Melburnians are rightly proud of our tap water, which is primarily sourced from protected natural catchments and requires very little treatment before we drink it. There are only five cities in the world that source tap water from protected natural catchments and Melbourne is one of them. As many have discovered after a trip interstate or overseas, our water is great to drink! Medical experts agree that during summer, people should drink at least 8 glasses of water per day - more if they have been exercising or outdoors. Water is the best source of hydration and is calorie free – and of course it is an absolute bargain compared to any other drink. Tap versus bottled water–quick facts •1 in 8 people worldwide have no access to safe and clean drinking water. • Where safe water is available, every second we buy 8 bottles of water. • Using tap water means less wastage as there are no plastic bottles going to landfill, reducing our environmental footprint. • We spend more than $500 million

a year on bottled water, which is not only putting greater strain on the environment; it’s an expense we could easily avoid. Water’s health benefits – quick facts • Water is essential in regulating body temperature and maintaining mental and physical vitality. It transports nutrients and oxygen to cells within the body. • Our bodies are 70 per cent water, and staying hydrated is essential for good health and performance in all areas of life. Most mature adults lose about 2 to 3 litres of water per day. Exercising, particularly at high intensity, increases the amount of water released through the body’s sweat pores. It is recommended athletes drink 500ml of water two hours before their event and between 300-500ml every half hour during matches. • On average a football player consumes around 1.5 litres of water during a game of football. Aiming High: Kashif Bouns Plans To

Register Team Pakistan in AFL International Cup 2014

Around 21 years ago, Pakistan achieved a milestone at the historical Melbourne Cricket Ground by winning the ICC Cricket World Cup. This was followed recently by Pakistan Hockey team claiming the third position in the Hockey Champions Trophy in Melbourne in 2012. But Hockey and Cricket have always been the traditional sports for which Pakistan is known, but Kashif Bouns hopes to once again make his country shine on the Australian soil in a sport that is more of a realign than sport in Australia. Nurturing ambitions of representing Pakistan at the Australian Football League’s International Cup in 2014, the 30-year-old Kashif, currently

serving as a Multicultural Programs Coordinator at AFL Victoria, Kashif has extensive networks within the Pakistani community, as well as the broader Multicultural and AFL community. Kashif has received a multitude of awards for his work, including the Enterprising Grade of the Year 2013 from Box Hill Institute, the “Inspiring Youth” Community Award – 2012 initiated by the Australian Federal Police (AFP), and the Victorian Multicultural Award for Excellence – 2011 for Service Delivery to Multicultural Victoria initiated by the Victorian Government. He is also a Deakin Golden Key Honorary Member. Now, he plans to use his profile to help broader Pakistani community build a stronger connection

with the adopted country using AFL as a vehicle for social inclusion. “I want the community to decide and have power over the matters of the team. I am here to provide guidelines based on my extensive experience in the

Australian sporting industry and use my networks to drive its success.” “I have filed the papers with the AFL to represent Pakistan in what we know as the AFL World Cup” he says. “The name of the team has been decided

by the Pakistani community itself. In football, we have at tradition of teams with suffixes like mosquitoes, falcons and tigers, and after receiving suggestions and feedback from the community, it has been agreed that Pakistan Shaheens will be the name of our AFL team.” Deciding the name is just the tip of the iceberg. There is a long road to cover before Kashif’s dream of actually seeing representation of his home country on the Australian sporting field realises. Starting from the scratch, he intends on building a solid organisational structure that could guide the team and all the affairs related to it. In that, he wants the Pakistani Community in Australia as well as elsewhere in the world

to extend its support in every possible way. So far the response from the community is “overwhelmingly positive” and Kashif hopes the enthusiasm to grow with time. “Some people are just calling me saying we are happy to just carry water for the players.” The AFL International Cup occurs every three years. The tournament’s edition for which Kashif has nominated his team will be played in August next year. He is currently looking to recruit players, coaches, and team officials and anyone who wants to join in can contact; the only prerequisite is commitment. The training sessions are going to kick off once the players are selected by the qualified professionals. Kashif can be contacted at kbouns@gmail.com.

Buddhist Iftar Dinner

The Greens are proud of Australia’s multiculturalism and the rich contribution migrants have made to our economy and culture. As the Federal Member for Melbourne many of my neighbours are part of the Muslim and AfricanAustralian communities living in the inner Melbourne area. I have shared many Iftar’s with my neighbours and celebrated a blessed Eid with the wider community. The Greens are standing up for a more caring, inclusive and equal Australia. Because of the Greens, millions of children can go to the dentist for free under Medicare from January next year. We have been fighting Labor’s university funding cuts and want to increase funding to Universities by 10%. The Greens have a practical plan to bring refugees to Australia safely and we will work to stop the old party’s cruel off-shore detention of asylum seekers We want to grow jobs in a strong, sustainable innovative economy for the long-term and to protect our climate and environment for the future of our children. In the electorate of Melbourne, I have been working closely together with community leaders on issues that affect our communities. We have assisted 1000’s of people with family reunion

and immigration, applications for protection visas, unemployment, racial discrimination, housing and social services. Earlier this year we secured $6.6 million for Migrant Community Employment Fund to support community organisations to assist new migrants and refugees to get jobs. The Greens have been the only party to consistently stand for peace and oppose the war in Afghanistan and Iraq. We will continue to work for peace through justice in the Middle East. The Greens are standing up for multiculturalism, equality and better health and education. We believe everyone, no matter what your name or religion has a right to a job and respect. I am asking for your support at this election so we can continue standing up for the community.
