Message from the Grand Mufti of Australia

to the Australian Muslim Community during these challenging times To the Muslim community and wider Australian community.

Dr Ibrahim Abu Mohammed Mufti of Australia

• We realise that we are living in a very challenging time in the history of mankind, not only in Australia but also globally. • We are facing a great war against an enemy that is constantly changing its tactics. Sadly, the physical, economical and psychological repercussions of this war will be felt long after it is over.. • And we are facing changes that have permeated all aspects of our lives; our homes, the streets, mosques, churches and other places of worship. • The enemy (Covid-19) despite being nearly invisible, its dangers are so severe, impacting the most valuable gift given to us by our creator, life. • Great nations face their challenges by uniting and working together. We do this by understanding the dangers of this virus and the methods to combat it and abiding by the regulations placed by the appropriate government bodies whose job is to protect the

public in these unprecedented times. • People’s lives are at risk. Now more than ever we need to be wise in our actions and practice patience as we sacrifice a portion of our freedom of movement for the greater good. • We remind the Muslim community in Australia that we have brothers and sisters worldwide who are scholars, scientists, doctors, nurses and other health professionals who are at the forefront of fighting off this pandemic in hospitals and laboratories, doing everything they can to help protect people from this disease. • As Australian Muslims we continue to strive towards contributing to our great nation Australia. We will aid, support and abide by recommendations from the health bodies that are working towards educating and protecting the people. • I urge the community to use these holy days to ask Allah swt to remove this disease from Australia and around the world. • I ask Allah swt to protect you and to maintain the bounties of our freedom, health and security.

ANIC has won a lawsuit against Moustafa Rashed for DEFAMATION. The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) has won a lawsuit against Moustafa Rashed for defamation. Moustafa Rashed falsely claimed that he is Australia’s only elected Mufti. He is also Chairman of the International Federation of Muslims for Peace. This organisation falsely claimed it is the only registered organisation in Australia for Muslim Imams. On Thursday, June 10, 2021, ANIC were able to obtain judgement against Moustafa Rashed. This judgement included defamatory remarks made by him claiming ANIC was a terrorist sympathiser. Sheikh Shadi Alsuleiman, President of ANIC, commented:

“The Australian National Imams Council won the case against Mustafa Rashed. We hope this judgement clarifies this man’s lack of credibility and accordingly his claim as the Mufti of Australia. We reiterate that Moustafa Rashed is not the Mufti of Australia or an Imam in any mosque or any Islamic centre, and he had never ascended a pulpit in Australia, he also has nothing to do with the Muslim community in Australia and has no recognition from anyone from the Muslim community or the Government.” It is understood that Moustafa Rashed’s preaching about Islam have nothing to do with Islam at all, and the comments he propagates in the media are rejected by all Islamic religious

scholars and institutions around the world. ANIC had numerously warned of Moustafa Rashed’s actions and informed him that he does not represent any component in the Australian Muslim Community. Accordingly, we repeat the call to all media organisations not to host this man and to not introduce him as the Mufti of Australia. ANIC will consider and exercise all legal avenues against media organisations that continue to falsely represent Moustafa Rashed as the Mufti of Australia or an Islamic religious authority. ANIC thanks Birchgrove Legal for their continuous efforts and for achieving this and other outstanding results.

Three Foundational Steps toward a True Transformation for Post-Pandemic Future Organisations

Dr. Rawaa El Ayoubi Founding Director Aspire Leadership Network

To exit the big challenge caused by the pandemic, companies need to take actions that both boost performance and inspire their people. Leaders must pivot these actions towards a lasting change that secures a real transformation. But we all agree that in times of crisis and economic turmoil it becomes very difficult for managers and leaders to put their hope up on investments. Organisations must learn in an attempt to starve off this crisis how to implement some initiatives like slashing costs and reducing headcount to converse cash. However, achieving the heading for the exit and making tough decisions is not easy in this time of uncertainty. At the same time, if your organisation doesn’t move quickly and find agility and stability it will lose balance eventually. Therefore, making fundamental changes is the way to a true transformation. All of which begs the question: how do you do your transformation? Organisations can create this sense of urgency and resilience and maintain the momentum to deliver sustainable results by following these foundational steps.

Three foundational steps toward a true transformation for post-pandemic future organisations: 1. Any truly successful transformation has to begin by sharing your vision and stretching aspirations. The CEOs have to create convictions in their staff to drive the change sought. In this case, a mindset shift is very important for the process of transformation. This kind of mindset that makes people believe everything is possible. In each meeting, you always share the organisation’s vision with your employees and aspire to something greater at the same time by developing an inspiration story that creates a linking to the transformation you are aiming for. McKinsey’s research on more than

80 large-scale transformations shows that managers that conduct a comprehensive “full potential” analysis and set transformation targets that nearly doubled trailing earnings were more likely to get total return to shareholders gains. But for that kind of transformation, change of culture is required. 2. Great ambition is needed towards a successful transformation. If the level of ambition is high, it can be a huge step of change in performance. McKinsey’s research shows that more than 40 percent of a successful transformation’s value comes from growth initiatives. “The companies

AL WASAT 122 ¿ Muharram 1443 ¿ August 2021 ‫ هـ ¿ آب‬1443 ‫ ¿ محرم‬122 ‫الوسط‬

that are doing transformation right have an all-in mentality from the start.” For George Oliver, chairman and CEO of Johnson Controls, a building technology and solutions company, transformation has to be clear and transparent. It means engaging employees at every level of the organisation and getting the right alignment at the leadership level. Oliver states “People had been doing their jobs for years, but no one had been asking them what their ideas were or how things could be better,”. That was the start of Johnson Controls’ transformation “turning the company bottoms up so that we’re getting all the best ideas that over the years

weren’t being listened to,” he says. 3. A decisive quick action is necessary for the organisation to make a speedy heading for the exit. To embark on a transformation, it is the responsibility of the leader to have some guidelines for the employees to follow after reviewing the goals according to the change. Then, understand the interdependencies and implications of timing for those moves, and structure a program with thoughtful sequencing that maximises value creation.

When Queenslanders Kemal Omar and Dr Mustafa Ally first discussed a professional advocacy and lobbying body for Muslims, they took inspiration from US models that used dialogue, research and law to achieve their aims. They got to it and created the structure. But they didn’t foresee the Christchurch massacre.

AMAN’S WIN OVER RACISM When an Australian Senator dragged a grieving community through the worst disrespect, hours from the unfolding horror, it was time to strategise. The Australian Muslim Advocacy Network (AMAN) led by Kemal, Mustafa, Adel Salman and Professor Mohamad Abdalla employed me as the organisation’s first advisor. Lodging a complaint against former Senator Fraser Anning was our first legal action. The Islamic Council of Queensland joined us in a unified claim. We started off with ten pieces of evidence. In the end, the Tribunal found the former politician had incited hatred against Muslims on 141 occasions. Anning made it into the Parliament with the help of Pauline Hanson. He unashamedly argued all Muslims, “including so-called moderates” were attempting to conquer western countries

through immigration and high fertility rates. In his first speech to Parliament he called for a “final solution”. In his words, Islam was a barbaric cult that was not comparable with other religious traditions. But it was his cruel remarks on the Christchurch massacre that brought him notoriety. He argued the real cause of the bloodshed’ was the immigration program in New Zealand that allowed ‘Muslim fanatics’. Anning was censured and criticised by a motion of the Australian parliament. Eggboy shot to fame. But so did Anning, for a more dangerous kind of audience. In 2019 election, Anning made a video outside a Brisbane mosque calling ‘Islamification’ a ‘huge threat’ to Australia. That very same mosque was later vandalised. ‘Remove kebab’ a term calling for the expulsion and murder

of Muslims, along with ‘St Tarrant’, was graffitied across its front wall. Alhamdulillah the legal win was a number of firsts. The first time a sitting politician had broken hate speech laws. The first time Facebook and Twitter had been caught out hosting such vast amounts of hate speech. The first win for the Muslim community. Inciting hatred is not acceptable. While we must push for equivalent protections in NSW, SA, WA and the Northern Territory, we can take heart that for the first time, Australian Muslims have sent a resounding signal to politicians and public influencers. We have a defender in AMAN and a source of renewed hope. AMAN founder Kemal Omar said the organisation, which relies on community donations, is grounded in Islamic duty.

“It is our duty to prevent oppressors from hurting people and lift up those who are downtrodden,” he said. “The overwhelmingly lawabiding Muslim community has been deeply scarred as a result of malicious verbal and physical attacks over the last 20 years.” “This feeling of relief and empowerment is what we wanted the community to feel.” “We thank Allah SWT for His help and guidance.”

About the Author Rita Jabri Markwell is a solicitor with Birchgrove Legal. Formerly employed as AMAN’s inaugural advisor, she continues to support their network and mentor emerging advocates.

Open Letter to the community from Arabicspeaking Australian doctors Urging the community to take the COVID-19 vaccine We, Arabic-speaking Australian doctors have been privileged to look after your health for many years. Our main goal is to work with and for you. You have for many years entrusted us with your health and listened to our clinical judgment. Now we are asking you , again to trust our judgement about the safety and efficacy of the COVID-19 vaccine to combat this deadly virus. In the current NSW Covid-19 outbreak, the CanterburyBankstown LGA has become the COVID-19 virus epicentre of Sydney. The delta variant is dangerous, highly infectious and deadly .It is a very dangerous time to remain unvaccinated. Do not believe all you read and hear that undermines the need to get vaccinated. The only action that has been proven to protect you from COVID-19 virus and Delta strain is being vaccinated. Current Australian data shows that those who lost their lives due to COVID-19 virus were NOT

vaccinated and this includes the 32 Covid-19 deaths in NSW since June. All Vaccines in Australia are effective, safe and free. The benefits of vaccination far outweigh the very low risk of side effects. The COVID-19 vaccine that is in your arm will protect you. Even one injection will reduce your risk of death, ICU admission and hospitalisation due to COVID-19. Two doses of the vaccine are even more protective. We urge you to make a booking to take the Covid-19 vaccine that you are eligible for and available to you. Don’t delay please. If you have any questions about vaccination please discuss it with your doctor. Ask the right questions to the right people. The sooner you get vaccinated, the sooner you and your loved ones will be protected and the closer we can all return to a normal life.

NSW Health has identified three locally acquired cases of hepatitis A in recent weeks, believed to have acquired their infections from consuming ‘Jordan River Dates’ brand of fresh Medjool dates. NSW Health and the NSW Food Authority advise consumers who have purchased ‘Jordan River Dates’ to stop eating the product, throw the remainder of the product in the bin or return the dates to the place of purchase for a full refund. Genetic testing of the infected people has identified a unique strain of hepatitis A not previously detected in Australia. The strain is identical to a virus strain that caused an outbreak of hepatitis A in the United Kingdom earlier this year, which was found to be caused by fresh Medjool dates imported from Jordan. NSW Health is working with other States and Territories to determine if they also have locally acquired cases of hepatitis A with this strain. “People who have eaten Jordan River Dates brand of fresh Medjool dates should watch out for symptoms and consult their local doctor as early as possible if symptoms appear,” NSW Health epidemiologist and Manager of Enteric Diseases, Keira Glasgow said. “Hepatitis A is caused by a virus which affects the liver. This can cause symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, fever and yellowing of the skin, dark urine and pale stools. Symptoms of hepatitis A take from 15 to 50 days to appear after eating a contaminated product,” she said. In most people the symptoms resolve after a few weeks with supportive treatment, mainly rest and fluids, but some people may be admitted to hospital. “Those who have consumed the product in the past two weeks may benefit from hepatitis A vaccination, if not already protected. If you are unsure if you have been vaccinated in the past it is safe to be revaccinated. Please check with your doctor,” Ms Glasgow said. NSW Food Authority CEO Dr Lisa Szabo said the Authority is working with the importer of the dates to minimise the risk to consumers. Details of product recalls are available at the Food Standards Australia New Zealand website https://www.foodstandards.gov. au/industry/foodrecalls/recalls/Pages/Jordan-River-Dates-1kg-&5kg.aspx Further, the Federal Department of Agriculture, Water and the Environment has been assisting NSW with its investigations into the cases of hepatitis A by providing import data to identify the supplier of the contaminated dates in Jordan. The department has applied an emergency holding order under the Imported Food Control Order 1992 to refer and hold all future imports of dates sourced from the implicated producer in Jordan. Any consignments of Jordan River Dates imported into Australia will be held at the border until the competent government authority in Jordan can provide the department with assurance that the risk of hepatitis A contamination in further imports of dates from the implicated producer has been mitigated. Three cases of hepatitis A have been notified to NSW Health in 2021, all of which are related to this outbreak. Two cases were unvaccinated, one reported being vaccinated but this could not be verified. If you have two doses of Hepatitis A virus vaccine you are immune for life. For more information on hepatitis A go to: http://www.health. nsw.gov.au/Infectious/factsheets/Pages/Hepatitis_A.aspx

RECALL OF IMPORTED DATES LINKED TO HEPATITIS A OUTBREAK

INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS STILL RATE AUSTRALIA HIGHLY New research shows Australia remains an attractive destination for international students, despite the impacts of COVID-19. About 87,000 international students took part in the 2020 International Student Experience Survey in August and September last year, with 91 per cent rating their overall living experience in Australia highly. Of those surveyed: • 97 per cent were satisfied with their personal safety on campus; • 91 per cent were satisfied with their accommodation; • 91 per cent were satisfied with opportunities to improve their English skills. There were, however, declines in satisfaction with students’ overall learning experience, which can be largely attributed to more international students studying online and the impacts of the pandemic. The survey was conducted at the height of Victoria’s lockdown and at a time when many students were studying offshore. The rating of the Quality of the Entire Educational Experience fell from 75 per cent to 63 per cent, with significant drops in the Learning Resources (11 point drop) and Learner Engagement (10 point drop) categories. While international student ratings of the overall education experience fell, some universities, like Edith Cowan University and Southern Cross University

managed to improve their results. Minister for Education and Youth Alan Tudge said it was pleasing that international students still rate Australia as place to live and study. “While our international student market has been significantly impacted by COVID-19, our fundamentals as a destination of choice remain strong,” Minister Tudge said. “It is clear some institutions have managed the COVID-19 transition better than others, and universities will need to consider how they improve the international student experience in the short and medium term to keep students engaged. “International students are an important part of the Australian community, and more than half a million have stayed here during the pandemic. We look forward to welcoming other back to our classrooms, campuses and communities, as soon as possible. “We continue to work closely with universities, states and territories on their plans to return international students when conditions allow. “I do acknowledge that it has been a particularly challenging time for many students and their families, both in Australia and overseas, and I thank them for sticking with us during this difficult period.” The full 2020 International Student Experience report can be found online: https://www.qilt.edu.au

Learning from Home during Lockdown:

On the Importance of Establishing and Maintaining a Routine

Dr Nada Ghamra-oui Director: NNG Educational Consultancy E:nada@nngeducationalconsultancycom.au Change including a death in the family, divorce, even having a new teacher can be stressful and impacts a child’s sense of security. While there are no specific tips on how to deal with the current situation, routine provides a sense of stability and responsibility. In fact, the Victorian Department of Education stresses the establishment of routine and setting of expectations as a priority. Providing a space for the child to work in, providing supervision, monitoring communication with teachers and monitoring online time then follow. https://education.vic.gov.au/ parents/learning/Pages/homelearning.aspx Although the idea of providing a routine is nothing new, one often finds little information on what to incorporate in a good routine. What is certain is that pursuing a routine can ease pressure on parents and for the child it provides consistency, confidence in doing things independently and a sense

If Sydney siders consider the current lockdown confinement to be stressful, then think of parents who are caring for and supporting young child/ren with learning tasks or what is now being referred to as home learning. Think of the im/possibilities of those parents whose support of their child/ ren’s educational endeavours has been thrust upon them with no sign of the impeding lockdown ending anytime soon. Presented with challenges of unique measures, parents of school aged children are navigating stresses and new terrains as they take on added responsibilities during isolation. In light of the circumstances and choice or lack thereof left to parents and given prolonged lockdowns, the question that arises is: what tools and strategies have been given or will be given to parents to equip them with helping their child/ren adjust to change?

of comfort. What follows are a few reminders on establishing and maintaining a home learning routine which may be productive during the COVID lockdown. A highly useful consideration to be mindful of is that an effective routine is tailored around child/ren’s circumstances and needs. It is realistic.

The importance of Establishing a Home Learning Routine: Some Tips Establish a structured but doable routine by following the tips below: I. Support: help your child/ ren organise themselves and set priorities for their learning at home by establishing a daily routine. II. Collaborate: Create a daily routine together with your child/ ren. By setting up and adhering to a healthy and doable home learning routine together with your child/ ren, you give them ownership. Also, by giving them voice you elicit their commitment.

AL WASAT 122 ¿ Muharram 1443 ¿ August 2021 ‫ هـ ¿ آب‬1443 ‫ ¿ محرم‬122 ‫الوسط‬

III. What to Include in the Weekly Routine? • Week-day routine: sleep/ bedtime hours; getting ready for learning time; face to face or zoom teaching learning hours; and, household responsibilities. • Breaks: recess/ play and lunch breaks • Exercise: encourage away from screen time with regular intervals of backyard and indoor activities. • Daily rituals: Whether children go to a government school or a religious school there are rituals they participate in on a daily basis. For example, school morning assembly can be replaced with checking in on the child’s educational needs / resources for the day through a parent/ child conferencing session. Also, remember to schedule prayer times and other rituals for children that attend religious schools. IV. Allow for flexibility: Remember that a routine offers many benefits, but it is also as important to allow for spontaneity and creativity. There

may be some special unanticipated moments when flexibility is called for. For example, making a cake for a sibling’s birthday (which is also an educational activity). Remember to adapt to the needs of every child. So be consistent but allow for flexibility. V. Week ends: Organise fun family activities and allow child/ren some leisure time. VI. Look after yourself: Last, remember that looking after your own wellbeing is equally important: Make sure you eat well and get enough sleep; schedule quality time for yourself; and, draw on support networks for more help. While parents are not expected to be teachers, establishing much important and needed structure offers stability, security and provides much needed reassurance for their child/ren and themselves during times of isolation.

StrokeSafe talks raise vital stroke awareness in local communities While National Stroke Week is over for another year, there is a way for local communities to continue to learn how to ease the burden of the disease. Virtual or in-person StrokeSafe talks are available for workplaces, community groups and local events all year round. StrokeSafe talks are presented by volunteers, many of whom are survivors of stroke or family members. The presentations include life-saving information about stroke, stroke prevention and recognition. The program aims to reduce

the number of Australians impacted by stroke through education. Stroke Foundation Executive Director Stroke Services Dr Lisa Murphy was pleased to see so much support for the StrokeSafe program across the country during Stroke Week (August 2-8) with 46 talks presented, largely online due to coronavirus (COVID-19) restrictions in a number of states. Dr Murphy has encouraged further bookings. “Public health has come to the fore like never before as a result of the coronavirus pandemic. “It is wonderful to see workplaces taking steps

to improve the health, wellbeing and knowledge of their staff. With the incidence of stroke growing among people of working age (18-64), these talks can make a difference to lives.” Stroke strikes the brain, the human control centre. More than 27,400 Australians experienced a stroke in 2020 – that is one stroke every 19 minutes. Stroke is always a medical emergency. Knowing the F.A.S.T. signs of stroke can save a life. Ask these questions: • Face – Check their face. Has their mouth drooped? • Arms – Can they lift both arms?

• Speech – Is their speech slurred? Do they understand you? • Time – Time is critical. If you see any of these signs, call 000 straight away. Stroke kills up to 1.9 million brain cells per minute, but prompt medical treatment can stop this damage. StrokeSafe Speaker Maree Scale has encouraged businesses and community groups to keep the Stroke Week momentum flowing and book a StrokeSafe talk. “Stroke is one of Australia’s biggest killers and a leading cause of disability,” Maree said. “I witnessed first-hand how

one stroke can impact entire families. My son had a stroke and it changed his life in an instant.” More than 80 percent of strokes can be prevented by managing blood pressure and cholesterol and living a healthy, active lifestyle. StrokeSafe presentations are available in-person and online. If you would like to request a free presentation please call 1300 194 196 or book online at https:// strokefoundation.org.au/ What-we-do/Preventionprograms/StrokeSafeSpeakers.

Does it matter if the work your son is doing is too hard or too easy? Absolutely. We’re all too human not to be affected by the mediocrity or enormity of a challenge thrown at us. Consider this classic test carried out by researchers years ago.

The setup was like a game called the “ring toss game.” A group of people were asked to take turns to throw rings over a peg. They were not told the real purpose of the game. The distance from where they should make the throw was random and left entirely up to them. A group of researchers watched the people. The researchers observed that a certain group of people behaved differently from the rest. Instead of rushing to throw their rings, they took the time to pause and choose their random spots carefully. These people, it seemed, made it a point to make quick mental calculations,

perhaps at a subconscious level, to stand and throw their rings from a spot where it was NEITHER TOO EASY NOR TOO HARD for them to stand a realistic chance of getting the ring onto the peg. The distance they chose was right at the end where they could toss the ring onto the peg. That is to say, they stretched themselves to the limit. When the researchers compared the personal details of this particular group of people with the others, they made a remarkable discovery. These people tended to be most effective in their lives. The rest of the people who chose a spot which was either

too near (too easy) or too far (too difficult) for them to score, tended to be less effective in their lives. It would appear, from this experiment that two things set the effective people apart from the rest of the pack: • They clearly wanted to succeed. They had an ambition to score. • They had a strategy in mind. The task they chose was just at the right level where they had to stretch themselves. Among boys themselves, there is a subtle difference between boys who achieve more and boys who achieve less. Boys who achieve less either choose or are given

tasks that are too hard or too easy for themselves. Boys who achieve more have learnt how to stretch themselves to the limit. They pace themselves such that the work they do is neither too hard nor too easy for them to tackle. It’s just at the right level of difficulty. When this happens, work becomes exciting for them. It makes them feel good and smart. If it’s too easy, it becomes a bore. Too hard and they become anxious and tense. It makes them feel like a failure. They “lose face” with the other boys, peers whom they see as competitors. Not only that, when the work is too difficult, they feel

incompetent, which is no good for their selfconfidence. THINK ABOUT IT: How well does your son pace himself? Is he given work at the right level? ACTION: Aim for challenges that make it possible for your son to achieve small breakthroughs and hence, a steady sense of achievement. Excerpt from “Cool Boys Super Sons”. Community statement and update on recent events during lockdown ANIC The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) acknowledge the community’s efforts and patience during this difficult time and recognise the current pressures placed on the community due to loss of income, family relations and basic social freedoms. This may, unfortunately, result in heightened levels of anxiety and frustration due to the current lockdowns and restrictions. ANIC support’s a balanced approach between maintaining law and order from a compliance perspective, and allowing the general public to exercise their rights and freedoms. The Australian National Imams Council (ANIC) had organised a community meeting with South West Metropolitan Region Commander, Assistant Commissioner Tony Cooke, and other community leaders and representatives. The meeting was

productive, whereby the concerns of the community were raised and subsequently addressed by the Assistant Commissioner. During this meeting, we offered practical advice and community-based solutions. We welcome the Assistant Commissioner’s directive to police under the South West Sydney command to keep in mind the current lockdown pressures and to practice policing in a “measured and tempered” manner. Further to this, points were raised as to maintaining communication and dialogue in working together during these challenging times. We strongly urge the community to continue to be patient and comply with the health orders and restrictions and to cooperate with the law enforcement agencies. At the same time, we also expect the police to conduct themselves in a professional and upright manner during these challenging times. We have called for empathetic policing

rather than over-policing. Aggression and violence is unacceptable, whether it be from the police or from the public. Failure to cooperate with the police will not de-escalate or resolve the situation. In fact, it is likely to aggravate the difficult incident. If community members experience improper behaviour or conduct from the police, they are encouraged to seek legal adivce or lodge a complaint to the Commissioner of Police or the Law Enforcement Conduct Commission (LECC). Is It Really Necessary to Take Supplements?

Mona Albadawy • Pharmacist and Nutritionist • Founder of @monyhealthcoah • Member of the Global Weight Management Federation

What causes vitamin and mineral deficiency? The amounts of vitamins and minerals we need each day depends on the age, gender, body weight, physical activity, physiological status, and medications taken. Healthy people should be able to get all the vitamins and minerals they need from a balanced diet. On the other side of the coin, some groups of people are at risk of certain vitamins and minerals deficiencies. Simply, because of certain lifestyle factors such as pollution, stress, alcohol intake or smoking. They may also have greater nutrient requirements due to pregnancy, athletic activities, vegan diet, or some illnesses. In many countries, the government produces scientifically developed recommended dietary allowances (RDAs) to cover broadly healthy people of different ages or genders. These are the basis for the Reference Daily Intake (RDI) values, which are used by regulators to create nutritional information on packaging labels.

When may you need a supplement? The following categories highlight those people who can mostly benefit from taking daily supplements: • People who have lost weight, who may be deficient in a wide range of vitamins and minerals. • Elder people who do not eat much due to changing taste buds, depression, or loneliness or loss of appetite due to health conditions or medications side effects. They are often deficient in vitamin D, vitamin A, vitamin E, calcium, or zinc, and occasionally vitamin B1 and vitamin B2. • Vegetarians, who are more likely to be deficient in vitamin B12, iron, vitamin D, zinc, iodine, riboflavin, calcium, and selenium. • Vegans, who are even more likely, than vegetarians, to be low in protein, selenium, and vitamin B12. • Heavy smokers, who are most likely to be deficient in vitamin C and zinc. • Teens and young people in their twenties who do not eat a balanced diet are likely to benefit from

AL WASAT 122 ¿ Muharram 1443 ¿ August 2021 ‫ هـ ¿ آب‬1443 ‫ ¿ محرم‬122 ‫الوسط‬

Many people complain of a lack of energy and vitality and often feel tired and run down. This is usually due to poor dietary habits, which make it more difficult to cope with daily life activities and demands. A Western pattern diet that mostly contains high amounts of processed, high-sugar, and pre-packaged foods can leave us vulnerable to nutritional deficiencies including iron, calcium, magnesium, folic acid, vitamins B6, B12, C, and D. multivitamin supplements. • Pregnant women or who wants to fall pregnant are often advised to take folic acid supplements, as studies have shown that taking multivitamin supplements before and during pregnancy leads to healthier pregnancy and healthier babies. Iron supplements may also be recommended during the first trimester of pregnancy. • Athletes and very active people may need more iron and proteins. • People who are allergic to certain food, such as dairy products. • People who live in a colder climate and do not get regular sun exposure are likely to be deficient in vitamin D, which can lead to weight gain, osteoporosis, depression, and increased risk of breast cancer, bowel cancer, Parkinson’s disease, and heart diseases. • Premenopausal women, who have often been found to consume low amounts of calcium, iron, vitamin A, and vitamin C. • Anyone who is under stress is likely to benefit from taking antioxidants and vitamin B complex. • Many men and women experiencing problems with low

fertility are deficient in zinc. • Taking certain medications such as antacids, anticonvulsants, and cholesterol lowering drugs, which increase the need for certain micronutrients and vitamins.

Are Supplements safe? If you are suffering from a certain disease, it is advisable to talk to your GP before taking supplements. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, only take those supplements specifically recommended for you to take during this time. The supplements whether vitamins, minerals, or herbs are known to safely prevent or treat a variety of diseases, but they also work by altering your body chemistry just like any other medicine. Therefore, before you decide to take a supplement, make sure you know about how it might interact with other medications you may be already taking. Before you turn to supplements, bear in mind that a perfect supplement does not exist. But it is clear that a balanced diet offers many health benefits over taking supplements.

ISLAMIC CALENDAR

16

The Islamic Calendar The Islamic calendar (or Hijri calendar) is a lunar calendar. It contains 12 months that are based on the motion of the moon, and because 12 lunar months is 12 x 29.53=354.36 days, the Islamic calendar is consistently shorter (11 Days) than a solar year, and therefore it shifts with respect to the Gregorian calendar. The first day of Year One of the Islamic calendar was set as the first day of the Hijrah, the Prophet’s migration from Makkah to Madinah on July 26, 622 C.E. The western convention in designating Islamic dates is thus by the abbreviation AH, which stands for the Latin Anno Hegirae, or ‘Year of the Hijrah’.

What does the Quran say about measurement of time? [Quran - 9.36] Surely the number of months with Allah is twelve months in Allah’s ordinance since the day when He created the heavens and the earth..

[Quran - 31:29] Seest thou not that Allah merges Night into Day and he merges Day into Night; that He has subjected the sun, and the moon (to his Law), each running its course for a term appointed; and that Allah is well-acquainted with all that ye do?

[Quran - 103: 1..3] By (the Token of) Time (through the ages),- Verily Man is in loss, Except such as have Faith, and do righteous deeds, and (join together) in the mutual teaching of Truth, and of Patience and Constancy.

How is an Islamic month determined: Each month starts when the lunar crescent is first seen after a new moon. Although new moons may be calculated quite precisely, the actual visibility of the crescent is difficult to predict. It depends on factors such as

weather, the optical properties of the atmosphere, and the location of the observer. Therefore in some cases it may be difficult to give accurate information in advance about when a new month will start.

Furthermore, in some areas Muslims depend on a local sighting of the moon, whereas in other areas a universal sighting is accepted. (i.e. if a new crescent is seen anywhere in the world it is accepted for communities the world over). Both are valid Islamic practices, but they may lead to different starting days for the months.

The Islamic Months 1. Muharram 2. Safar 3. Rabi’ al-Awwal (Rabi’ 1) 4. Rabi’ al-Thani (Rabi 2) 5. Jumada al-Ula (Jumada I) 6. Jumada al-Akhirah (Jumada II) 7. Rajab 8. Sha’ban 9. Ramadan 10. Shawwal 11. Dhu al-Qa’dah 12. Dhi al-Hijjah

The most important dates in the Islamic calendar are: • • • • • • • • •

1 Muharram (Islamic New Year) 10 Muharram (Day of `Ashura’) 27 Rajab (Israa’ and Mi’raj) 1 Ramadan (first day of the month of fasting) The last ten days of Ramadan, which include (Laylat Al-Qadr) 1 Shawwal (`Eid Al-Fitr) 8 – 10 Dhul-Hijjah (Hajj) 9 Dhul-Hijjah (Day of `Arafah) 10 Dhul-Hijjah (`Eid Al-Adha).

The Caliph Umar Invented the Islamic Calendar The dating of the Islamic calendar was introduced by the second caliph, `Umar ibn Al-Khattab, in 638 CE (16 AH) in an attempt to circumvent all the various conflicting dating systems used during his time. After consulting his companions, he set the Hijrah—the immigration of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from Makkah to Madinah—as the most appropriate reference to the new Islamic era. The Hijrah, historically speaking, is the central event of early Islam, the turning point in Islamic history that led to the foundation of the first Muslim state. Source: www.islamicity.com - aboutislam.net - catstevens.com AL WASAT 122 ¿ Muharram 1443 ¿ August 2021 ‫ هـ ¿ آب‬1443 ‫ ¿ محرم‬122 ‫الوسط‬

• However, the dates of some of these events, such as that of Laylat Al-Qadr and the Prophet Muhammad’s journey of Israa’ and Mi`raj, have not been conclusively specified, and there has been some uncertainty about the exact date of the event. • Four of the twelve months are sacred: Rajab, Muharram, DhulQi`dah, Dhul- Hijjah). • In the pre-Islamic period, raids among the Arab tribes were forbidden and hunting was halted during these months.

Islam inherited and approved this practice. • Fighting (killing) is prohibited during these sacred months except in self-defense. • Since the Islamic calendar is lunar, its year is 10 or 11 days shorter than the Gregorian year. This means that Muslim months fall in different seasons. • For example, Ramadan and Hajj can fall in the summer as well as in the winter. It takes about 33 years for the Islamic dates to rotate through the solar seasons.

VACCINATION AND CONSPIRACY Bilal Cleland dunk1689@gmail.com

The Polio Vaccine Hope that polio could be prevented appeared in Australia in 1954 when it was reported that a new vaccine was being tested on people for the first time. Trials were underway in Melbourne, Sydney and Adelaide of the new ‘Salk’ polio vaccine and the tests were “proceeding satisfactorily”. The vaccine was eventually proven to be effective and in 1956 the Australian Government launched a mass immunisation program for the prevention of poliomyelitis. All school children and pre-school children were immunised as part of the campaign. A major campaign was launched against the vaccine, intensified by the Cutter Incident, but the effectiveness of the vaccine quickly became apparent. Dr Salk gave an interview to The Atlantic in 2014 to counter the spread of anti-vaccination conspiracy theories. “Salk: …The reality is that back in 1954, there was a huge doubleblind study involving 1.8 million schoolchildren. The results were clear-cut: If you got the polio vaccine, you were protected; if you didn’t, you were not. When you have that kind of data, you just can’t say that the disappearance of polio is due to other things. What strikes me is—I don’t know quite how to put this, but it’s like there’s an epidemic of misinformation, and we’ve got to inoculate the public against it.” [28 October 2014 The Atlantic]

Smallpox the Mass Killer Smallpox which was estimated to kill some 400,000 people a year was combatted in the late 1700s by Jenner’s cowpox vaccine. Although it was effective many were afraid of it. David Isaacs Professor of Pediatric Infectious Diseases, University of Sydney relates the example of English satirist James Gillray who famously depicted cows emerging

When I was at Hamilton Primary School in the 1950s we all wore camphor bags around our necks. The smell of camphor was widely believed at the time to ward off the threat of infection from polio, the horror disease of the time. In Grade 5 our novel for English was “I Can Jump Puddles,” written by Alan Marshall who had polio. It had a deep impact. It is estimated that up to 40,000 Australians developed paralytic polio between 1930 and 1988. from the bodies of terrified people being given the vaccine. Some clergy proclaimed the notion of vaccination to be unchristian, as it came from an animal. Others claimed that the disease came from decaying matter, from miasma, so could not be related to vaccination. Others maintained that vaccination was a violation of their liberty. The Vaccination Act of 1853 ordered mandatory vaccination for infants up to 3 months old, and the Act of 1867 extended this age requirement to 14 years. resulting in major resistance. 80,000-100,000 anti-vaccinators led the Leicester Demonstration March of 1885, one of the most notorious of these demonstrations. Jenner was lampooned and a child’s coffin was carried to illustrate the terrible dangers of vaccination. When there was a smallpox outbreak in the USA in the late 1800s vaccination campaigns by government were met with resistance. The American antivaccinationists waged court battles to repeal vaccination laws in several states. [8 June 2021 The Conversation] Of course, like polio, smallpox vaccination has practically eliminated the disease. Smallpox has not occurred since the 1970s and polio is found only in Third World countries with poor medical services.

COVID-19 Conspiracy There has been a flood of conspiracy theories and false news about COVID-19, spread on social media and by unscrupulous media outlets. This area has now become an area of academic study due to its prevalence in the USA. One of the most widely accepted interpretations of conspiracy theory is “an explanatory belief about a group of actors that collude in secret to reach malevolent goals.” While conspiracy theories are not the preserve of the ideological left or right, they are more common at

The camphor bags were an attempted remedy that had also been adopted in the 1918 flu pandemic to open up the breathing passages as a deterrent to infection. It was mythical but was thought to be a possible protection against the scourge of polio in the 1940s and 50s. It possibly came from the days of the plague, when it was then assumed that infection came via inhaled noxious vapours, the miasmatic theory of disease. Something with a strong smell could counter the infection.

THE COW POCK Cartoon about 1800 showing the supposed effects of the vaccination treatment ideological extremes and certainly strongest at the extreme right. The social identity approach is one of the tools used in such study. The main assumption of the social identity approach (SIA) is that each person not only has a distinct personal identity but also social identities that connect them to other people. Intense political partisanship can create the Us vs Them mindset which facilitates the spread of conspiracy theories. Periods of crisis stimulate the rise of such theories, combined with feelings of powerlessness or alienation from the mainstream of community life. Thus belief in these theories is particularly high in members of stigmatised minority groups. “Also ‘underground’ extremist movements (e.g., groups of NeoNazis, violent anti-globalists, religious fundamentalists, and the like) are characterized by excessive conspiracy beliefs. theories

causally contribute to the process of radicalization, and the violent tendencies, of such extremist fringe groups.” ]December 2018 European Journal of Social Psychology 48(7): 897–908] Joseph A. Vitriol, a postdoctoral research associate at Lehigh University, finds that changes to existing social and political arrangements can be very threatening to those who have benefited from the old system. “We found that when one feels that society’s fundamental, defining values are under siege, it is a strong predictor of a general tendency toward conspiracy thinking and endorsement of both ideological and non-ideological conspiracy theories.” [30 May 2018 Science Daily] People who feel threatened by change, who feel that their position, ideological or social, is under threat, seek solace in the illusion of conspiracy theories. Dr Bekim Hasani announces the publication of his new book on human rights, titled:

‘THE GENERAL PRINCIPLES OF HUMAN RIGHTS IN ISLAMIC LAW’ Doctor Imam Bekim’s latest book has just hit the shelves! With his vast experience and knowledge about Shariah / Islamic Law, he has closely examined and analysed a person’s human rights on both a personal and societal level! A truly insightful, informative and motivational book, will surely leave it’s readers astonished, amazed and suprised about the many rights and responsibilities

Editor’s Note… At first it was so overwhelming reading through all the rights that people have over me, in so many situations, encompassed within all aspects of life, which I never knew about. From the rights of your neighbours to the rights you have as a child, up until your death, and even after you pass away. The shift in mindset came through when I realised how honoured and valued I was as an individual and as one of God’s creations.

a Muslim holds towards others, and the profound rights they themselves have over others. Working alongside Doctor Bekim, is his professional editor, who experienced such transformational growth in her own personal knowledge and views about Islam and her life as a Muslim when editing this gem!

The minute detail that God had thought about and stated in the Holy Quran and through the traditions of the Prophet (the Sunnah), had left me in astonishment and great awe. I felt so protected and loved, created with such importance, that not only did people have such rights over me, but that I had rights, if not even more, over them. I was honoured with rights as an individual, as a child, a daughter, a sister, a partner, a mother, a neighbour and a member of a community and society. This enlightenment has already

AL WASAT 122 ¿ Muharram 1443 ¿ August 2021 ‫ هـ ¿ آب‬1443 ‫ ¿ محرم‬122 ‫الوسط‬

caused huge changes in my personal life. Being educated and informed about the rights and responsibilities I have towards others, encourages me to fulfil my part in providing cohesion within society. Being honoured with these rights in return, brings immense feelings of peace, love and harmony into my heart and soul. Increased fines of up to $5,000 for COVID breaches, $320 COVID-19 Test and Isolate Support Payments, permits to enter regional NSW and a heightened police presence will be introduced, as NSW continues to battle the Delta variant. In addition, in Greater Sydney and other lockdown areas, the 10 kilometre rule will be reduced from 12.01am Monday, August 16, with shopping, exercise and outdoor recreation to be done in a person’s local government area (LGA) or, if outside their LGA, within 5 kilometres of home. LGAs of concern must still exercise and shop within 5 kilometres from home only. Premier Gladys Berejiklian said the vast majority of people are doing the right thing but there are a handful of people who are wilfully breaking the rules and putting the rest of the community at risk. “The increased fines and heightened police presence are about ensuring people who are doing the wrong thing are caught and punished

AUSTRALIAN

INCREASED FINES, TEST AND ISOLATE PAYMENTS AND NEW COMPLIANCE MEASURES AS NSW BATTLES DELTA appropriately,” Ms Berejiklian said. Under the changes, there will be increased fines for Public Health Order breaches, a permit system to enter regional NSW and tightened rules for people in LGAs of concern to help reduce the spread of the Delta variant.

Increased fines for Public Health Order breaches (from

12.01am, Monday, 16 August): • $5,000 on the spot fine for breaching self-isolation rules; • $5,000 on the spot fine for lying on a permit (already a criminal offence); • $5,000 on the spot fine for lying to a contact tracer (already a criminal offence); • $3,000 on the spot fine for breaching the two person outdoor exercise/recreation rule; and • $3,000 on the spot fine for breaching rules around entry into regional NSW for authorised work, inspecting real estate and travelling to your second home.

Permit system to enter regional NSW (from 12.01am,

Saturday, 21 August): • Any person who wishes to travel to regional NSW for one of the following reasons must have a permit which will be made available on Service NSW. a. authorised workers from LGAs of concern; b. Inspecting real estate. Any person inspecting real estate in the regions must now genuinely need a home to live in (no investment properties); and c. Travelling to your second home. This is now only allowed if

you are using the home for work accommodation or if the home requires urgent maintenance and repairs (if so, only one person may travel there).

Changes for residents in local government areas of concern: • From 12.01am, Monday, 16 August: only exercise and supervision of children allowed (no outdoor recreation); • From 12.01am, Saturday, 21 August: People who live alone must now register their “singles bubble”. Registration will be made available on nsw.gov.au.

NSW government extends financial support for tenants and landlords The NSW Government has announced it will provide increased security for tenants and financial support for landlords by extending the Residential Tenancy Support package. Minister for Better Regulation and Innovation Kevin Anderson said the Residential Tenancy Support package will now be paid for a second month and eligible landlords can now apply for up to $3,000 to cover the two months from 14 July 2021, assuming they have reduced rent for their tenant by at least that much. “The NSW Government is ensuring both residential tenants and landlords have ongoing support by extending financial assistance for private landlords who pass on rent relief,” Mr Anderson said. “Keeping people safe doesn’t just mean reducing the health threats of the virus. It is vital we help keep a roof over the heads of those who may be suffering financial hardship at this difficult time.” Mr Anderson said landlords who have already applied can make an additional application and those who are yet to apply will be able to make one application for the total amount of rent waived, up to $1,500

a month. “We have always encouraged landlords and tenants to work together to negotiate on rental agreements and the NSW Government has now made that conversation easier by supporting landlords so they can reduce rent for their tenants,” Mr Anderson said. “It’s hard enough having to lockdown in your home while we stop the spread of the virus, but this NSW Government support means you can do that without fear of being evicted.” Landlords will also have the option to apply for the COVID-19 land tax benefit instead of applying for the Residential Tenancy Support Payment, which is an offset of the land tax liability equal to the rent reduction granted. Eligible COVID-19 impacted residential tenants who cannot meet their residential rent payments will be protected from eviction during the moratorium period commencing from 14 July and finishing at the end of 11 September 2021. Drive-through hub welcomed in bid to improve Hume City vaccine access The establishment of Australia’s largest drive through vaccination centre at the former Ford site in Campbellfield will provide a major boost in the fight against the coronavirus in Melbourne’s north. Hume Mayor Councillor, Joseph Haweil, and Federal Member for Calwell, Maria Vamvakinou, commended the Victorian Government for rolling out the new site from Monday, 23 August. “This is a significant step forward to improve vaccination rates in Hume,” Cr Haweil said. “Our residents can now receive the vaccine close to home and help protect themselves and their community from COVID-19. “We have been advocating to the Victorian Government to undertake a more targeted and accessible vaccine roll out approach and are delighted that Australia’s largest vaccination site will be located at the former Ford site in Broadmeadows.” From Monday, eligible people can book in to receive the vaccine through the drive-through service,

with walk-in sessions being introduced at a later date. “Services in the northern suburbs were less than optimal – and while further improvements can be made, I’m glad to see that the Victorian Government has responded to my request for a more suitable, accessible vaccine hub in Hume,” Ms Vamvakinou said. “Allowing eligible families to drive up and all receive their first dose in one visit will make it much easier for them to get vaccinated – and the more we can respond to our community’s needs, the more successful this roll out will be.” In thanking the Victorian Government for the establishment of the vaccination hub, Ms Vamvakinou and Council acknowledged that more needed to be done to support the vaccine roll out in the northern suburbs. “GPs play an important role in providing trusted vaccine information to their patients but there are currently less than 10 GPs in Hume that can administer both the Pfizer and AstraZeneca vaccine.”

How to Overcome Emotional Eating During the Lockdown

No one can deny the overwhelming feelings we are all facing these days because of the lockdown - the uncertainty about when things will get back to normal, worrying about losing our jobs, and paying the bills, all while homeschooling children. Of course, there are certain aspects of life we will never be able to control, but one thing I am sure of is that we Of course, with the long history of eating disorders, failed diet attempts, and negative body images most of us have experienced, and the additional stress of repeated lockdowns, many find that their only source of dependable pleasure and comfort is food. I am a survivor of binge eating disorders. I yo-yo dieted for twenty years. As a result, I became an anti-diet revolutionist. I no longer see food as dangerous. Instead, I encourage others to reflect on their behaviour toward food and achieve clarity and understanding about the driving forces that compel their dietary habits. Those forces are emotions. I could write a book about how to help you overcome your binge eating disorders, but because space and time is limited, I will share with you the ultimate way to help you stop “eating your emotions”.

It is gratitude. Resist the temptation to use food as a coping mechanism, as a balm for your emotions, but don’t force yourself to stop, because this could lead to overeating.

You have tried many times to rely on willpower and it didn’t work, right? Again, there is not enough space here to explain how the mind works, so let’s jump into the scientifically proven technique – Gratitude. Gratitude is a natural antidepressant that helps your brain release dopamine and serotonin, the two crucial neurotransmitters responsible for your emotions, and that make you feel “good”. When incorporated into your daily life, gratitude has the potential to become a potent coping strategy. Gratitude helps lower stress hormones in your body by over twenty percent. I personally consider gratitude to be the key to overcoming the emotional numbness that eating disorders often cause. Choosing to have a grateful attitude can actually alter your perception of

have the power to control our emotions. Interpretations of current circumstances vary from one person to another. Some might feel burned out because of anxiety, which could lead to more severe mental health concerns, while others might find blessings and/or feel blessed even in the midst of the mess currently surrounding us.

eating, food, health, and life in general. Gratitude anchors you to a healthy lifestyle, from making healthy food choices, to the portions you consume, to moving your body in the right way, not just beating yourself up in the gym. It can even improve your relationships with your loved ones. So next time you consider eating a bar of chocolate, instead of labelling it as bad or unhealthy, which will lead to self-blame and self-sabotage, tap into the real emotions in your heart and feel grateful that you have access to such a treat while many people in other parts of the world do not. You know what will happen then? You will find yourself feeling contented to have just a little piece of chocolate, and being in control of your behaviour will make you feel strong and happy. This sense

of liberation from soothing your emotions by comfort eating is priceless. It will also make you feel better spiritually because squandering in health, in food, and in life is inadmissible in Islam. Remember - taking care of yourself helps you take care of others. It allows you to set a healthy example for your family and others around you. They’ll be proud of you, and more importantly, you’ll be proud of yourself – for replacing habit with mindfulness, and shame with gratitude. Above all, be patient with yourself. It took decades for the multi-billion-dollar beauty and diet industries to implant their false, negative programming in your mind. It will take more than a few attempts for you to uproot it and replace it with healthy, realistic habits that make you healthy, and happy.

VIC This year’s General Achievement Test (GAT) for Year 12 students will be rescheduled to keep Victorian students, teachers and broader school communities safe from coronavirus. With ongoing community transmission still occurring in metropolitan Melbourne, the Department of Health’s public health team has recommended the GAT be rescheduled, reducing the risk of a further outbreak with large cohorts of students taking the test together. As Victorians work to run the current outbreak of the Delta variant to ground, a new date will be determined in the coming days to give schools and students certainty that the rescheduled test will be safe to go ahead. On the rescheduled date, students who are in quarantine as positive coronavirus cases or Primary Close Contacts, as well as schools deemed exposure sites, will receive an exemption from the GAT. This will not disadvantage students’ results and will be taken into account with the Consideration of Educational

Disadvantage process. In a normal year, individual students are assessed for special consideration on a case-by-case basis – but the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority will again use the CED process to finalise VCE results for each and every student completing one or more VCE or scored VCE VET Unit 3-4 sequence in 2021. Consistent with the approach in 2020, the process considers a range of data alongside exam results to calculate final VCE results - like the GAT, comparisons of performance across all assessments and schools and other learning data. The process will also include assessments of the individual impact of coronavirus on each student including school closures, direct impacts on student’ health, ongoing issues with remote learning and mental health challenges. The Department of Education and Training and the Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority (VCAA) will support schools in the coming weeks to make appropriate COVIDSafe plans to hold the GAT

Two new campuses for Australian Islamic College Perth Stage 1 will consist of Kindergarten, PrePrimary and other primary year levels. Based on expressions of interest received, Stage 1 will either only include junior primary classes (Kindergarten to Year 3) or may extend to include all primary year classes (Kindergarten to Year 6). There are plans already in place to expand from Kindergarten to Year 12 at both new schools within the next few years. The College envisages Stage 1 will ease enrolment pressure at its existing primary schools in Dianella, Thornlie, and Kewdale which are operating at full capacity with extensive waiting lists. The number of students at the College’s current Perth campuses has already exceeded 3,600. The new College locations will provide families with state-of-the-art schools closer to home which will significantly reduce travelling time of students. Construction of Stage 1 will begin in 2022, with the Primary School buildings completed for the start of the 2023 school year. The Minister for Education, Hon. Sue Ellery, has already approved advanced determination for both schools in Forrestdale and Henley Brook. DOUBTFUL INGREDIENTS IN PROCESSED FOOD & FOOD ADDITIVES PART II Every prophet was exhorted by God to only consume food that was good and pure (Tayyibaat). God says in the Holy Qur’an: ‘O messengers, eat of the good things, and act with integrity…’ (Quran 23:51) While Muslims consume halal food according to religious rulings, there are nonMuslim communities that also recognise the benefits of consuming such ingredients based on the quality and hygiene of the food. Food additives are substances added to foods for many purposes including: preserving flavour, or improving taste, texture and even for appearance. More than three thousand substances are internally added to foods and drinks to produce a desirable effect. Ten thousand other compounds and combinations of compounds are added to various food during processing, packaging, or stages of storage.

These additives give body and texture to food, evenly distribute particles of one liquid into another, control acidity and alkalinity, affect baking results and help retain moisture, as well as prevent caking or lumping. The food additive is used in foods and drinks for one or more of the following purposes: • To maintain or improve its’ nutritional value. • To maintain freshness. • To make the food and drink appear more appealing. • To help in the preparation and processing of the food. Some products would not be

possible to produce without the use of additives. However, some food additives also have serious problems in regards to their Halal status. For the food industry to serve the Halal market properly, it is very important that they determine the Halal status (suitability) of these additives. Unfortunately, some of the common additives are derived from sources that are not Halal, such as pigs and other haram animals, as well as animals that were not slaughtered in a Halal manner. Even if food additives are listed in the ingredients, the label source of the additive is usually not mentioned. There are seven major groups of these food additives:

• Emulsifiers • Stabilizers and Thickeners • Ph Control Agents • Bleaching Agents • Anti-caking Agents • Humectants • Leavening Agents Emulsifiers (Mixers) also called an emulgent, is a surface-active agent that acts as a border between two immiscible liquids, such as oil and water, allowing them to be blended into stable emulsions. Emulsifiers also reduce stickiness, control crystallization and prevent separation. Emulsifiers such as mono-glycerides, poly-sorbates, diacetyl tartaric esters of mono- and di-glycerides and other similar chemicals are

another commonly used group of ingredients that can come from either Halal, or haram sources. If the Emulsifiers are from vegetable sources, or Halal-slaughtered animal sources, then they can be considered as Halal. All other processing aids (i.e. stabilizers, thickeners, anti-caking agent etc.) can be derived from either Halal, or non-Halal sources too. Even in most cases where the processing aid is used during the processing of the product, the ingredient is usually removed from the final product. The presence of non-Halal processing aids automatically qualifies the product to be non-Halal, regardless if it is still present in the finished product, or not.

The four categories of people in this world sectors in the community. This category is at the most honorable level in the sight of Allah. Second category: Those whom Allah granted religious knowledge but not wealth.

Marwan Saad Azzubaidi The four categories of people that our beloved prophet “Peace be upon him” asked his companions to memorize so that each individual would make a self-assessment before we will all be judged by the Lord of mankind in the hereafter. First category: Those whom Allah granted wealth and religious knowledge. Hence, they manage their wealth by the light of their religious knowledge, with full consideration of the rights that Allah has obligated them towards other less fortunate

However, they are sincere in their heartfelt intentions (which Only Allah and themselves know how sincere they truly are). They would declare [to Allah] that if they had the opportunity to become wealthy, they would spend it in the same way of people in the first category. Prophet Muhammad “Peace be upon him” said that these two categories will be equally rewarded from Allah based on their sincere intention. Third category: Those whom Allah granted wealth but not religious knowledge. Hence, they manage their wealth foolishly based on their desires, not considering the rights of other less fortunate sectors in their communities that Allah has obligated, nor do they use their wealth to maintain their ties of kinship. This category is the most wicked in the sight

of Allah. Fourth category: Those who were neither granted wealth nor religious knowledge. Hence, they would declare [to themselves] that if they had the opportunity to become wealthy, they would spend it in the same way of people in the third category. Prophet Muhammad “Peace be upon him” said these two categories would deserve equal punishment from Allah for their evil intentions. Five lessons to be learned from the hadith: 1.Significance of seeking religious knowledge (Correcting our intention). 2.hazard of religious ignorance - misguidance -Corrupts the intention. 3.Don’t judge the book by its cover. Wealthy people will be held accountable for how they are spending whatever they earned. 4.Attaining rewards from Allah can be achieved by secret but sincere intentions for those who don’t have wealth to spend. 5. Falling under the curse of Allah can happen by hidden

In this world people are of 4 categories, but in the hereafter, there will only be 2 categories, the dwellers of the heavens (categories 1 and 2) and the dwellers of the hellfire (categories 3 and 4). Summary message of guidance: If we were not from the

first Category because we are not wealthy, we should not miss being in the second category, because the third and the forth categories will be disqualified by Allah in the hereafter.

38 COMMUNITY

For the Love of

COMMUNITY By Shazma Gaffoor In an environment where boys are revered, Galila Abdelsalam wanted to redefine the narrative and was determined to make a name for herself. And that is exactly what she did. Ms Abdelsalam was one of seven girls among 10 siblings, and the second in the family to go to university.

“My dad and my mum gave me freedom to study outside of our town, and to live in the university. It made me respect the freedom they gave me, how important it is for a woman to be strong, to face the world which is mainly dominated by men,” Ms Abdelsalam says. She took part in various recreational extracurricular activities to convey that she was a very capable individual. She was also named the Student of the Year in her first year of university, which is where she met her husband who was about to graduate with a law degree. “Because of the [bad] economic situation in Egypt, he went to work in Europe. When I finished my university, I joined him in Greece where we worked as any migrant, in anything but our qualification,” Ms Abselsalam says. She didn’t speak Greek and so she took on the role of a housewife which put a strain on her self-esteem. She felt useless when she knew she could contribute better with her Agricultural Engineering qualification. After a three-year stint in Greece where the couple’s first son was born, Ms Abdelsalam moved back to Egypt for a year, securing

employment with the government. “In that time a businessman from Sydney who came to Athens, wanted some people to help with building in Sydney. He like my husband very much so he offered my husband a contract to come to Sydney. That’s when I came back to Greece.” Ms Abledsalam tried to find excuses not to go because she didn’t want to venture beyond Europe and to remain closer to home. but when she was offered a return ticket to bid goodbye to her family in Egypt, and to ship their furniture to Sydney, the couple could not refuse. After arriving in Australia in 1983, the couple settled down in Sydney for the first two years. Within a year they received their permanent residency while working for their sponsor. Soon after Ms Abdelsalam gave birth to her second son and became pregnant with her daughter. Over the next five years, Ms Abdelsalam became severely depressed at being tied down to just being a housewife. She was used to being the leader of the university community and was always immersed in various activities. “I went for counselling

because I was always crying. I had depression at that time. They said that I had to do something or even go back to study. So I got back to studying at Granville Tafe and was so happy to study a course called ‘new opportunity for new migrants’,” Ms Abdelsalam says. Soon after she took a course in drafting engineering from 1986 to 1988. The quality work she produced earned her several interviews, only to then be declined once they saw her in person. “That discrimination brought me right down. From 86’ to 88’ I faced a lot of discrimination. On the road, transport, everywhere. Calling names because we were wearing hijab and in front of my kids. I really hated Sydney at that time,” she says. The family travelled to Queensland for their first holiday in 1988. Ms Abdelsalam took an immediate liking to the Sunshine State and wanted to live here. “The Australian people were so friendly, everywhere we walked they were very lovely and were speaking to us and our kids which we haven’t seen in Sydney,” Ms Abdelsalam says.

Hijri New Year 1443 ‫عام هجري مبارك‬

In the early 90’s, her husband along with a few others established a community centre to make up for the absence of a mosque in their locality. Under that banner Ms Abdelsalam founded the Islamic Women’s Association of Queensland which was later changed to Islamic Women’s Association of Australia (IWAA).

IWAA have come a long way from starting with just two employees to currently over 400.

COMMUNITY

39

In October 1988, the family packed their belongings and headed off to live in Brisbane. “When I first arrived, there was no community except for a ‘pocket’ community in a small area. And the first mosque that I went to, I faced discrimination.” Ms Abdelsalam says that Arab-Muslims were a minority back then and so she felt that she was singled out and even questioned if she was Muslim. Coming from a culture where men and women collaboratively discuss community issues, she noticed that the women at the mosque were restricted only to the kitchen. She started working with the Migrant Womens Emergency Support Services which supported women who experienced domestic violence. This opened her eyes to the magnitude of the issue. She worked at the Centre for a year and saw many Muslim

women return to their abuser because there was no culturally sensitive support for them. “Lots of them refused to get service from other Muslims because of concerns that information would be leaked and feeling ashamed in front of family. So I thought it was time that we have something for Muslim women,” Ms Abdelsalam says. They provide affordable services to community members, offer support to the

elderly among other services across Queensland. They have expanded nationally and opened offices in Sydney as well as Melbourne. Ms Abdelsalam has also been recognised for her tireless community work and is the recipient of numerous awards, including the Order of Australia Medal OAM award which she received in 2019. Amid her successes, her life was also struck by tragedy when her oldest son died in a tragic car accident in 2008, leaving behind two young children. Nine year later she lost the love of her life. Ms Abdelsalam says her belief in qadr is what gave her resilience and allowed her to focus on bettering her beloved community. “My message to every woman who comes to this country is never give up your dream. And don’t turn your back on your community.”
