EFFENDI MUHAMED SEID MAŠIĆ: A GREAT ALIM’S LEGACY
Dr Dzavid Haveric an historian, researcher and author
This is a Bosnian story for Muslims in Australia about a great Islamic legacy which should be widely known. A great alim and an Islamic scholar, Effendi Muhamed Seid Mašić (1913-1978), was born in the Bosnian town of Gračanica into a distinguished Muslim family. This article coincides with the time he was born, 100 years ago. In 1931, Effendi Masic obtained his qualification in Islamic studies at the Gazi Husrev-bey Madrasah in Sarajevo. As a young man, he started writing and publishing his work. In his book My Attitudes, he recalled,
‘When I for the first time dipped my pen in ink, still as an immature boy, in order to write something for the public, I had no idea that it would teach me about being a meticulous and thoughtful Muslim, and that such people know how to cope in pre-war, war and post-war situations’. During the Second World War, he wrote, translated and described poetry in four volumes in Bosnian such as those written by the famous Arab Majnun Qays Ibn Mulawwah and other Arabic poets.
After the war, besides working as a teacher in a few schools, and also as an imam and a marriage registrar, Effendi Masic dedicated his life to art and science. He was a free thinker who promoted freedom of religion, education, tolerance and other social virtues. However, being a victim of the repressive system of communism, he unjustly experienced cruelty of prison life. He survived his struggles by fighting with his uncrushable spirit and humanistic Islamic ideals.
Altogether his poetry, chronograms and calligraphic writing, Muslim thought and the insightful analysis of topics, his numerous newspaper articles along with a number of books represent a great legacy of his time. It made him among the most prominent of Bosniak (Bosnian Muslim) intellectuals of the 20th century. His translated and published poetry and novels in ‘Islamski svijet’ (Islamic World), ‘Muslimanska svijest’ (Muslim Awarness), ‘Slobodna rijec’ (Free Word) among others in Bosnia. However, he was known beyond his local circles. In particular, his poems were published in Cairo, Mecca, Istanbul and Berlin, most notably in Umm Al-Qura (‘The Mother of Villages’), the first Arabic daily newspaper based in Mecca. He was recognised for his skills in writing couplets and their rhyming, evident in various poetic genres of the Middle East, such as gazelle, qasida and mansavi. Knowing diverse dialects from Marocco to Malaysia, he wrote several thousand couplets in Arabic and also recited Arabic and Bosnian poetry on numerous occasions. He said:
For the beauty of the pearl to amaze the viewer, it must first be taken from the bottom of the sea.
Effendi Masic was famous for his depth of messages in everlasting tarihs (chronograms)
written not only in his books, but on the mezars’ headstones and on different Islamic-styled buildings. Most of his chronograms were ‘carved into hearts’ of those people who truly appreciated his noble words. For his creative opus and dedication, his colleagues called him respectively ‘Mevlana’ and ‘Shaikh’.
‘Avicena’ (Avicenna), a publishing house in Sarajevo, published a number of his books, chronograms and monographs, such as My view on global superpowers (‘Moje gledanje na velesile svijeta’), My Attitudes (‘Moji stavovi’), Freedom of conviction and faith (‘Sloboda uvjerenja i vjerovanja’), Jamal al-Din al-Afghani - life and work (‘Džemaludin Afganija – život i djelo’), Tarihs (chronograms) of Muhamed Mašić (’Tarihi Muhameda Mašića’) and The gate of death (‘Smrtna kapija’) and so on.
Inspirations on his Muslim thought, styles and cultural aspects should be discovered as a way to enrich the Western-inspired modernism. For a humble personality of Effendi Masic, it was
said, ‘At no stage of his life did he seek to be recognised. He left it to others to pass judgment on him’. He should be the ‘rolemodel’ for the younger Muslim generations in Australia, in particular those interested in this field.
By introducing Effendi Masic’s erudition and nobility, this evidence is based on data generously supplied by his son, an academic Prof. Dr Izet Masic, the wellknown international scholar in the field of Medical Informatics. In 1997, he came to Brisbane for the IMIA (The International Medical Informatics Association) congress, but he also visited Muslim communities in Newcastle, Sydney and Melbourne. ‘Australia is my pleasant experience and I met many good people’, he said. ‘My interview on SBC (Melbourne) radio is unrepeatable’. He left a profound impression on Muslim communities. His statement, ‘I came from the small, but famous country of Bosnia, which survived five world empires – Byzantium, Roman, Ottoman, Austro-Hungarian and NATO’, echoed well in a magazine, the Voice of Bosnia (Brisbane). I was a guest speaker and gave a speech about the introduction of new classification codes based on war wounds in medical experiences in Bosnia. The audience of 800 people applauded him for three minutes in a big hotel in Sydney. Academic Masic also gave a much appreciated community lecture in Victoria about the history of Muslim Medieval medicine – an unforgettable event.
Dr Dzavid Haveric is the author of the first books on the Muslim discovery of Australia, the Muslim newspaper, the Australian Minaret, the history of Muslim Anzacs, two comprehensive volumes on the history of Islam and Muslims, Muslim immigration and community building and a world Islamic encyclopedia, among others.

ENRICHING THE SOUL WITH CONTINUING ISLAMIC EDUCATION (CIE)
By Jamilah Samian www.coolmumsuperdad.com
This article refers to the one-hour presentation I did on 24th December 2023 at the MISG-IMSA Muktamar 2023 in Austin, Texas. Continuing Islamic Education (CIE)
Muslims base their actions (what to do, what not to do) on two sources: “Naqli” (divine revelation i.e. Al-Qur’an & “Sunnah” i.e. way of life of the Prophet SAW) and “Aqli” (Reason/Research/Logic).
From a “Naqli” standpoint, CIE is worth our time and consideration:
“Read, in the name of your Lord who created. . .” – Al-Alaq:96:1
“It is only those among His servants who have knowledge that fear Allah. Verily, Allah is Almighty, Oft-Forgiving. Indeed, Allah is Exalted in Might and Forgiving.” – Fatir:25:28
Abu Hurairah RA reported:
The Messenger of Allah SAW said, “When a man dies, his deeds come to an end but for three: recurring charity, or knowledge (by which people) benefit, or a pious child, who prays for him
is a subject close to my heart. With CIE, you’ll empower yourself with a better understanding of the Qur’an and Sunnah, which guides how you interact, lead and
(for the deceased).” (Sahih Muslim, 1631, sunnah.com). Another reason for you to go for CIE.
Consequences of Colonialism
It’s worth mentioning the consequences colonialism brought to Muslim countries.
Islamic education is holistic, leads to “tawhid” (belief in oneness of God), understanding of Allah, Islam, Qur’an and Sunnah. The colonials imposed significant changes to the education system, one of which was that, subjects deemed as “duniawi” (e.g. Math, Science, Technology) were separated from “ukhrawi” (the Afterlife). My siblings and I were blessed because our parents emphasized the importance of both. We attended two different schools everyday so that we did not miss out on Islamic education. I know many families who did
not, as the religious school (Islamic Education) wasn’t compulsory. Attending two different schools was tiring, but I’m glad my parents made us do it. The early exposure to the Islamic worldview guided our life decisions until today – what we did, what we didn’t do, who we married, how we raised our children – these are important choices with far-reaching long-term consequences.
Confusion with the Qur’an
A huge issue with Muslims worldwide. Muslim children and youths are taught to read or memorise the Qur’an without understanding the “seerah” (context) and/ or meaning which results in a fragile Muslim identity or worse, an identity crisis.
I highly recommend The Clear Qur’an: Tafsir for Kids (4 volumes), an excellent choice to begin with.
inspire the children and youths under your wing to think, feel and do better.
https://theclearquran.org/ kidsquran/
Benefits of CIE
Because CIE promotes accurate Islamic understanding, it deepens your connection with Allah, and enhances your worship. It also helps us navigate modern challenges (raising visibility of the Muslim voice) related to contemporary issues. In terms of self-improvement, it will help develop one’s critical thinking skills too.
Having said that, nothing is worth doing unless the intention is to please Allah.
If you decide to go for CIE the formal way, know that embarking upon it is the easy part. Sticking to it till completion is the hardest. Our ultimate goal is nothing more than seeking Allah’s pleasure. For postgraduate students in particular, getting a supportive supervisor is crucial. Many
postgrad students did not finish their studies for different reasons, including the failure to complete the written thesis. But if you have a clear purpose, you know why you need to do it, chances are you’ll reach the finishing line come what may. I believe that when you do what you can to help others, Allah will send help to your own family members in ways you never imagined – something I have experienced many times.

THE HIGHEST OF ALL CRIMES – GENOCIDE
This Nazi mass extermination campaign is rooted in European history, back to the Roman Empire and the destruction of Jerusalem.
Bilal Cleland dunk1689@gmail.com
Each year Holocaust Memorial Day is observed on 27 January.
It is the date of the liberation of AuschwitzBirkenau, the largest Nazi death camp
Soviet troops on entering the camp, found warehouses filled with glasses, prosthetic limbs, shoes, suitcases, as well as human hair shorn from the murdered.
9000 emaciated prisoners were still there, too weak to be taken on the SS Death March. Through the Polish Red Cross, 7500 survived.
[Auschwitz Liberation History.com]
During the height of deportations to the camp in 1943-44, an average of 6,000 Jews were gassed there each day.
Over 2,772,000 Jews (or 46% of Jewish victims) were murdered at 5 main killing centres in assembly-line style killings.
“Between 1933 and 1945, Nazi Germany and its allies established more than 44,000 camps and other incarceration sites (including ghettos). The perpetrators used these sites for a range of purposes, including forced labour, detention of people thought to be enemies of the state, and for mass murder.”
[Holocaust Encyclopedia]
Centuries of European antiSemitism.
Jews were expelled from England in 1290 from France in 1306, the Holy Roman Empire and Spain in 1492.
Czarist Russia was a cesspool of anti-Semitism and when many Jews supported the revolution which gave them equal rights, the Czarist White Army promoted the JudeoBolshevism conspiracy theory, thus linking political and religious bigotry. This was easily transferred to German racists who feared the rise of the Left.
Hitler in his speech in Munich on 12 April 1922 stated:
“In boundless love as a Christian and as a man I read through the passage which tells us how the Lord at last rose in His might and seized the scourge to drive out of the Temple the brood of vipers and adders. How terrific was His fight for the world against the Jewish poison.”
Wannsee Conference
20 January 1942.
This racism and religious bigotry proved fertile soil for the Nazi campaign of extermination, defined at the Wannsee Conference 20 January 1942.
Heydrich announced that Reich Marshal Goering had requested a plan for the final solution of the European Jewish question.
The most important elements were:
a) Forcing the Jews out of the various areas of life (Lebensgebiete) of the German people.
b) Forcing the Jews out of the living space (Lebensraum) of the German people.
In pursuit of these aims, the accelerated emigration of the Jews from the area of the Reich was encourage until 1941 when it was replaced by evacuation of the Jews to the East.
Heydrich presented figures
showing 11 million Jews in Europe were to be targeted.
The Final Solution involved forced labour in camps to the East, where natural attrition could be expected to reduce numbers.
For those who survived this, Heydrich said “suitable treatment” would have to be administered.
They could not be permitted to form “germ cells” of an anti-Nazi opposition.
“Suitable treatment,” remained vague in the Protocol.
We know what happened. Millions of Jews, Slavs and Roma were murdered.
As a result of the Nuremberg Trials, the crime of genocide was defined and legislated across the world.
Israel established the death penalty for this crime, including in the penalty, support for genocide.
This was specified as; conspiracy to commit genocide, incitement to commit genocide, attempt to commit genocide and complicity in genocide.

Jerusalem Conference 28 January 2024
Unlike the Wannsee Conference, this “Victory of Israel Conference: Settlement Brings Security,” held as the death toll of Gazan civilians shocked the world, this did not represent the state but included at least 27 members of the government including 12 ministers in Netanyahu’s war cabinet and 15 other lawmakers.
Despite the provisional ruling of the ICJ that Israel must “take all measures within its power” to avoid acts of genocide in its war in Gaza, including the “prevention and punishment of genocidal rhetoric,” both national security minister Ben-Gvir and finance minister Smotrich called for the removal of Palestinians.
They both called for the re-establishment of Jewish settlements in Gaza and the north of the West Bank,
known to some Israelis as Samaria.
Ben-Gvir said: “We must encourage voluntary migration. Let them leave.“
One speaker was Rabbi Uzi Sharbag, a former leader of the banned far-right terrorist group Jewish Underground. [30 January 2024 Guardian]
This meeting showed “the nature of this Israeli government,” according to Mustafa Barghouti, the general secretary of the Palestinian National Initiative party. [29 January 2024 Al Jazeera]
Dehumanisation a Major Problem
The Judeo-Bolshevik threat, blaming Jews for defeat in the war and for unemployment, comparing the Jewish population to a disease and portraying them in film as rats, led to the acceptance by many Germans and others of the “Special Treatment” given to Jews.
The same dehumanising tactic was used by Serbian Chetniks to prepare the ground for the Bosnian genocide in the 1990s.
There are very dangerous echoes of this in the rhetoric around the assault on Gaza from leading political figures in Israel, quoted by South Africa in its charges before the International Court of Justice.
President Herzog blamed the whole population of Gaza for the presence of Hamas.
“It’s an entire nation out there that is responsible. This rhetoric about civilians not aware, not involved, it’s absolutely not true. They could’ve risen up, they could have fought against that evil regime,” said Herzog.”
Israel’s defence minister, Yoav Gallant, ordered a “complete siege” of the Gaza Strip with “no electricity, no food, no fuel, everything is closed”, he said: “We are fighting human animals and we are acting
accordingly.”
In the background is the 2003 study of Israeli textbooks by the Hebrew University in Jerusalem.
“They describe Arabs as vile and deviant and criminal, people who don’t pay taxes, people who live off the state, people who don’t want to develop.” [16 October 2023 Guardian]
Another concerning feature of recent Israeli history is the law of 2011 which h allows towns to exclude certain types of people it does not like.
The Knesset on March 23, 2011, passed a law authorising “admissions committees” in about 300 Jewish-majority communities to reject applicants for residency who do not meet vague “social suitability” criteria.
‘The measure anchors in law a practice that has been the basis for unjustly rejecting applications by Palestinian Arab citizens of Israel as well as members of socially marginalized groups such as Jews of non-European ancestry and single-parent families.’ [ 30 March 2011 Human Rights Watch]
Combined with the ethnic cleansing of Gaza being contemplated plus the IDF protection being given to violent Israeli colonists on the West Bank, we see the Lebensraum and Lebensgebiete getting too close for comfort.
Proclaiming conspiracy theories about a people, dehumanising them through their portrayal as “lesser beings than us,” associating them with backwardness and deviance, allows them to be given “Special Treatment” by the dominant culture or political group.
26,000 civilians, mostly women and children, dead so far in Gaza under Israeli bombardment, gives cause for reflection about the real nature if Israel.

BRIMBANK SOLIDARITY GROUP FOR PALESTINE CELEBRATES COUNCIL’S HISTORIC MOTION, ACKNOWLEDGING DEDICATED ADVOCACY
Brimbank Solidarity Group for Palestine
The Brimbank Solidarity Group for Palestine celebrates the Brimbank Council’s historic and unanimous motion, a testament to the diligent efforts of our community advocates. Through persistent lobbying and grassroots activism, the group has played a pivotal role in shaping the Council’s stance, “calling for an immediate and permanent ceasefire, an end to the siege in Gaza and an end to the illegal occupation and apartheid in Palestine.”
The motion passed with consultation with the Brimbank Solidarity Group for Palestine also “calls on the Australian Federal Government to call out Israel’s legacy of gross humanitarian violations and atrocities carried out on Palestinian people.”
Spokesperson Fatima Hoblos commends the tireless work of the group and the Brimbank community, stating, “This motion is the result of our collective commitment and unwavering dedication. We appreciate the Brimbank Council’s responsiveness to our advocacy efforts. In particular, we acknowledge Cr. Tachos, Cr. Nguyen and Cr. Papila for reflecting the strength of our community in standing up for justice and acknowledging that this war did not begin on October 7, 2023, but many decades ago.”

LOCAL ZAKAT IN ACTION
By Shakir Hurn
It’s been a busy couple of months at the National Zakat Foundation. As we mentioned in the previous article, our NZF Gaza program has now been in operation for the last three months and we’ll provide you with an update of where this is at. Moreover, our NZF Back 2 School program commenced in the second week of January and has grown sustainably from its humble grassroots initiative since 2015. Lastly, the blessed month of Ramadan is around the corner with preparations in full swing. To begin with, let’s provide you with an update on what has been taking place with the NZF Gaza program and how it all works.
The Palestinians who arrive in Australia directly from Gaza are allocated a Visitor Visa (Subclass 600) with an approximate number of 800 being granted by the Australian government. As of the 18th of January 2024, NZF has funded 203 individual Palestinians from Gaza and distributed $183,258 in Zakat to them. For this to be implemented, sponsors must apply directly to NZF for their family members and compliance checks are carried out to ensure legitimacy and Zakat eligibility. If all these boxes are ticked, a one-off settlement grant will be paid for each individual and thereafter a monthly allowance will be distributed for each person for the duration of their visa. The initial grant ensures their resettlement is swift by having secure housing, groceries, clothing, medical support services and much
more. Thank you for all the generous donations that have made this happen. This truly demonstrates the power of implementing Zakat locally, and we can see how this action makes a significant difference.
With the cost-of-living crisis, our Zakat Officers know all too well how many families are worried about having enough money to purchase new stationery, school clothes, school shoes and so forth for their child/ren. From the second week of January, a ten-day blitz has taken off to distribute over $100,000 to support Zakat eligible parent/s to alleviate some of the financial pressure to ensure their child/ren are ready for another school year. Last year alone we assisted 385 families and in total 1123 children. This is an important initiative and communal obligation to ensure some of the most vulnerable Muslims in our community aren’t left behind because all children are deserving of a proper education.
It’s almost that time again. Yes, it’s time to get our souls ready and not our fridges and bellies. At NZF, preparation is underway to ensure families and individuals will have sufficient food to break their fast with and/or to ensure their child/ren will have an enjoyable Eid Al-Fitr. This is now exemplified due to the cost-of-living crisis and what better opportunity to pay your Zakat and donate your Sadaqah during this blessed month and don’t forget Zakat Al-Fitr. Stay tuned for more information in the coming weeks. Ya Allah, allow us to reach Ramadan ameen! For more information on our programs visit: https://www.nzf. org.au/
NSW Health is warning of the dangers of tablets which are being sold as MDMA (ecstasy) and found to contain a potent opioid (nitazene).
Three people presented to Sydney hospitals over the past weekend, after taking as little as half a tablet. One patient was admitted to the ICU and has since been discharged home.
NSW Health warns the tablets are an orange/red colour and rectangular shape, with a red bull logo and wording, and were sold as MDMA (ecstasy).
Testing of a tablet linked to one case confirmed it contained a nitazene, a highly potent opioid, and no MDMA.
NSW Poisons Information Centre Medical Director Dr Darren Roberts said drugs containing potent opioids such as nitazenes can cause unexpected and severe overdose or death.
“Nitazenes can be as strong, or stronger than fentanyl and may be more likely to impair breathing than other opioids,” Dr Roberts said.
“It’s important people recognise the signs of an opioid overdose early and know how to respond. Taking the appropriate action early can save a life,” Dr Roberts said.
Opioid overdose symptoms can include pin-point pupils, drowsiness, loss of consciousness, slow breathing/snoring or skin turning blue or grey.
If you witness someone experiencing any of these symptoms after using
drugs, you should call Triple Zero (000) immediately or seek urgent medical attention. Naloxone should be given immediately if available. Naloxone is an important life-saving medication that reverses the effects of opioids. It does not require a prescription and is free for anyone at risk of opioid overdose in NSW. It is available as a nasal spray or injection from some pharmacies and other health services. For more information on the take-home naloxone program visit: YourroomTake Home Naloxone:

You won’t get into trouble for seeking medical care. If you feel unwell, or if your friend feels unwell, do something about it.
