Making Renting Simpler For Our Newest Victorians

From left: Denis Nelthorpe CEO of WEstjustice, Catharine O›Grady from AMES, Cesar Melhem MLC for Western Metropolitan and Roz Howe, General Manager of Education and Online Services at Consumer Affairs Victoria.

Media Release The Andrews Labor government is making renting simpler for Victoria’s migrant communities with a series of multilingual videos that explain tenants’ rights and responsibilities. Minister for Consumer Affairs Marlene Kairouz and Member for Western Metropolitan Cesar Melham launched the videos at the Western Community Legal Centre (WEstjustice) in Werribee today. First released in Dari, the animated

clips have now been dubbed in Arabic, Karen and Swahili for the benefit of Victoria’s growing Iraqi, Syrian, Myanmar and Congolese communities. They have been translated into languages based on the top five countries of birth for people granted visas in Victoria, and cover a range of important topics such as starting and ending a lease, bonds, repairs and condition reports. Rental processes in Victoria can be very different from those overseas, and new migrants who are not fluent in English often find it difficult to

navigate the rental market. People who have spent a lot of time in refugee camps may have never rented a home. Consumer Affairs Victoria has partnered with refugee and migrant settlement agency AMES Australia to share the videos with their clients. The videos can be found on the Consumer Affairs Victoria website in Arabic, Swahili, Karen, and Dari. “It’s important all Victorians can understand their rights and responsibilities as tenants – regardless of where they were born or what language they speak.” The Minister for Consumer Affairs Marlene Kairouz said “These educational videos are designed to help our newest arrivals take control of the rental process and make the most of their lives here in Victoria.” “The renting process in Victoria can be different from many places overseas and it can be difficult for new migrants to know where to begin.”Member for Western Metropolitan Cesar Melham said “This project will help make renting a straightforward process for those who need extra support.”

Commencement of Upfield railway station car park works Media Release The upgrade of the car park at the Upfield Railway Station which will add 100 commuter spaces is about to commence, Member for Broadmeadows, Frank McGuire, announced today. The upgrade will also install new lighting, line markings, CCTV and signage to make the car park safer and easier to get around. Mr McGuire said “This work is part of the Andrews Labor Government delivering better services and taking care of the commuters of Broadmeadows.” “It is great news that works have started on building 100 extra car parking spaces at Upfield Station. We are making the improvements Upfield line passengers need by adding more car spaces and removing three dangerous level crossings” Mr McGuire said. The Upfield Railway Station car park

works are due to commence earlier than anticipated. This is good news for commuters with the car park upgrade works at the station scheduled to commence on Wednesday, 20 June, dependent on the weather forecast. Some disruption is inevitable with about 20 (out of 120) of the existing formal car parks at Upfield needing to temporarily close for the day. This closure will act as a buffer to ensure that vehicles are not impacted by the spray. This earlier commencement will bring forward the completion of the car park works by about one month – from the end of August to the end of July. Victrack will ensure commuters are notified of the disruption, both on the ground and via PTV and MTM. The works are part of the Labor Government’s $20 million Station Car Park Upgrades Program, which will deliver more than 2,100 extra parking spaces at regional and metropolitan train stations where they are needed most.

Human Appeal Australia Emergency Drought Relief Mobile Medical Clinic Mogadishu, Somalia, May, 2017

It is not often that we get an opportunity to witness firsthand what in reality we do not fully appreciate. The call for our trip could not have come at a better time - only a few days before the Muslim holy month of Ramadan. A Human Appeal team from around Australia travelled to Somalia, a land of extremes with a blue tropical ocean and delicious bananas contrasted by the sickening reality of people dying from thirst and starvation. Our team including Issam Chaouk, Director of Projects; Rabih Baytie, State Manager Victoria; and Imam Akram Buksh, State Manager Queensland reached Mogadishu on Thursday morning 18 May The images of destruction we saw during the flight to the capital city beggared belief - crashed

aeroplanes and tents made of tree branches littered the surrounds of the international airport. This was a clear indication that much worse was yet to be seen. After arriving in Mogadishu we had no time to waste and went straight to the humanitarian camps. The scenes we witnessed were unimaginable. We were shocked to see our fellow brothers and sisters in humanity living in utter desperation. Pieces of cloth held together with rope and propped up with branches served as tents in which to live. The sight of children forced to lose childhood joys due to disease and malnourishment was devastating. Mothers waited hours to fill plastic barrels with clean water and then carrying the heavy load for kilometres to reach their makeshift homes. The

struggle to survive for these people was palpable. From the moment we arrived to the time when we left, we joined the local team and provided aid and support. We distributed over 750 food parcels which included 25 kg flour, 25kg rice, 25kg sugar and 3.5 litres of oil, all essential items coming just before Ramadan. We also brought in water trucks which catered for the crucial needs of thousands. Our local medical team worked tirelessly, utilising the portable medical centres donated, to treat over 250 patients that day until the late hours of the night. Their dedication was awe-inspiring. The experience for us was both happy and sad - happy to see the joy of receiving aid on their faces but saddened by the reality that much more needed to be done to break this cycle of poverty. Since the people of Somalia rely heavily

on farming to survive, water is a critical resource. With the crippling drought currently being experienced, crops and animals die forcing people to migrate to where they can find water. We, therefore,

identified that one solution is to build artesian wells which in some cases could require digging up to 300 meters deep. The water provided from such a well could provide an entire village with

sufficient water to keep a farm and animals alive and may even cater for neighbouring villages if needed. By Ali Kadir, Human Appeal Branch Manager South Australia.

2nd Annual Australian Islamic Schooling Conference

Dylan Chown – Program Director – Islamic Education at Centre for Islamic Thought and Education

Dr Freda Shamma – Islamic Society of North America (ISNA) Lifetime Achievement Award Winer for dedication and commitment to education

Delegates from across the country and around the world will converge on Adelaide on the 11th and 12th of July for the 2nd Annual Australian Islamic Schooling Conference. This event is proudly presented by the University of South Australia’s Centre for Islamic Thought and Education (CITE) and supported by Islamic Schools Association (ISAA) of Australia. With the theme ‘Islamic Schooling Renewal – A Focus on Curriculum’, the event will bring together key scholars, academics, researchers and educationalists as they unpack all things relating to curriculum in the context of Islamic schooling. Two outstanding key note speakers will offer their insights on the opening of both days of the conference. Dr Nadeem Memon is one of the foremost academics in the field of Islamic education and Professor Seema Imam is a pioneer of Islamic schooling in North America. This 2nd Annual Conference follows from the Inaugural Conference in Melbourne in 2016, a watershed moment for all those in the field of Islamic education in the country. The Inaugural conference was about starting a conversation with both those within the field of Islamic schooling as well as with partners and colleagues across other sectors. “Islamic schools in Australia, as has been the case with earlier faith-based school communities, are negotiating a period of transition from the establishment phase to a new and exciting phase in their development - a phase of renewal,” CITE Program Director for Islamic education, Dylan Chown, says. “Renewal relates to the search for a more nuanced understanding of the principles of Islamic education and what they may look like in contemporary Australian schooling contexts. Renewal calls for a purposeful synthesis of these principles from the tradition with contemporary educational practice; and greater emphasis on empirical research substantiating best practices in Australian Islamic schools.” Chown said. Conference Convener and CITE Director, Professor Mohamad Abdalla emphasised that, “we can no longer rely on anecdotal evidence if we are to move forward in a substantial and sustainable way”. Indeed he says, “We have started in Australia through conferences like this a movement towards best practice for Islamic schools based on evidence in order enhance the capacities of Islamic schools. And although some of this research has taken place overseas [where Islamic schools were founded much earlier] we have caught up very quickly”. The conference theme of a focus on curriculum is timely given the era of National Curriculum in Australia and other contexts. Curriculum represents a key focus in education based on its importance to quality teaching and learning. Islamic schooling circles have long recognised the importance of curriculum. Testament to this was the ground breaking Second World Conference on Muslim Education in Islamabad in 1980 which investigated the theme of integrated Islamic curricula. The iconic conference captured wide spread concerns in the field regarding the quality and appropriateness of existing curricular and added impetus to discussions around future directions for curricular in Islamic schooling. How much progress has been made in the area of curriculum within Islamic schooling? To what extent have we achieved an ‘Islamic’ curriculum? What does this mean? Are curricular relevant and contextual and how do they align with National or Ministerial curriculum? How

L-R: Dr Freda Shamma; Ms Omaira Alam (Program Manager – Islamic Teacher Education Program); Dylan Chown – Program Director – Islamic Education, Centre for Islamic Thought and Education; Professor Mohamad Abdalla – Director, Centre for Islamic Thought and Education; Shaykh Aasim Rashid; Abdullah Trevathan - Head Teacher and lecturer Al Akhawayan University, Morocco; Muhammad Abdullah – Career educator, PhD Student CITE

equipped is the field of Islamic schooling to manage necessary curriculum renewal? What progress has been made in the area of integrated curricular? What does integration in the context of Islamic schooling deliver for quality teaching and learning? Do existing curricular meet the needs of Western Muslim students? These are just some of the questions that Islamic Schooling Renewal – A Focus on Curriculum will

tackle over two conference days. Don’t miss this premier gathering for scholars, academics, policy specialists, educational leaders, teacher researchers, and educational partners in the field of Islamic schooling. For more information or to register go to the news and events page of the CITE website.

Dr Nadeem Memon is one of the foremost academics in the field of Islamic education. He holds a Ph.D from the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education at the University of Toronto on the history and philosophy of Islamic schooling. Dr Memon has served in a number of roles including as Director of Education for Razi Education; Program Director for the Islamic Teacher Education Program, a project of Razi. Dr Memon spearheaded the design and roll-out of a ground breaking online teacher certificate program, The Islamic Teacher Education Program (ITEP) for Islamic school teachers in collaboration with Razi Education and the University of Toronto. He is an editor of Philosophies of Islamic Education: Historical Perspectives and Emerging Discourses (Routledge Research in Religion and Education).

Dr. Seema Imam is Co-Chair of the National College of Education, at National Louis University where she has served 20 years in Elementary, Middle and Special Education teacher preparation. She serves on the Board of Directors for The Islamic Schools League of America and teaches the online course, Integrating, Infusing, Initiating: Designing Curriculum for Islamic Schools,” in the certificate program offered worldwide with Islamic Teacher Education Program. Muslims of Australia facing Six Times exclusion from the Society By Umar Bin Amin Globalisation has caused an inundation migrants in the western societies which has aroused issue of acceptance of these new ‘citizen’ in the society. This change has resulted in reshaping the parameter of inclusiveness and made it harder for authorities to uphold the greater inclusivity in the society. A recent research conducted at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology, to determine the degree of severity of inequity and non-inclusiveness for Migrants. In Australian context, it was found that migrants are facing a greater degree of exclusiveness and specifically Muslims migrants are Six Times worse off from being included in the society and living an inequitable lives. In the research published in an

international journal Tarbiya named, Muslim Employment in Commonwealth Government Departments and Agencies in the Context of Access and Equity, the phenomena of exclusion was examined in three spheres. At national employment level, national government department’s level and managerial levels of national government employment. In each sphere it was found that the Muslim community was two times less inclusive thus making it six times excluded from the society overall. At national level, Department of Immigration and Border Protection’s reports were quoted, which pointed that according to 2011 census, Muslims population which makes up 2.2 percent of total Australian population, was facing 12.1 % unemployment rate, double than the national unemployment and highest

amongst the all religion groups of Australia. And it is interesting to note that Muslims are facing this double deprivation in national level of employment despite of having 1.7 times higher education than the average qualification in the country. It was also revealed that 52.3 per cent Muslims were noted living below poverty line thresh hold, with income less than $400 per week [1]. In this report it was also noted that this impoverishment was at the highest proportion amongst the major religion followers in Australia in 2011 census. This severity of unemployment has also been drawn on graph and found that only the Muslim community was farthest from the trend line when this unemployment was compared with the education of major religious groups.

Relationship of unemployment & education of major faith followers In second step the matter of inclusiveness of Muslims were examined within overall national government employment structure. According to Australian Bureau of Statistics data shown in the table below from the 2011 census, only 5,462 Muslim employees were the part of the national government employment work force of 413,449 personnel. Which makes up only 1.3 percent of whole national employment of government. This composition was 1.7 times less than their national population composition. This condition again speaks for nearly double drop out from this arena as well.

Comparison of representation of faith followers in national government employment When it was further drilled down at the managerial level of employment the situation found pretty consistent with the previous two rounds. Once again the ABS data utilised here in the following table, where it has been shown that there were only 336 Muslims managers which makes 0.6 per cent of total managerial level staff. Thus again two times centrifuged from their composition in national government employment. This tally clearly speaks that the Muslim managers are amongst the lowest in proportion from all religious faith follower mangers.

Restricting Citizenship and Reclaiming Australia for the English Speakers The politics of exclusion proceeds apace. Just recently we were informed that Australian citizenship would become harder to acquire: “The new measures would see migrants face a tougher citizenship test which will assess their commitment to Australia and their attitudes to religious freedom and gender equality.” [ABC News 2017-04-21] Not only ‘values’ will be emphasised, but there will be a much tighter English Bilal Cleland language requirement. Immigration dunk1689@gmail.com minister Peter Dutton made it clear that a ‘significant change’ would be made. Henceforth an English proficiency equivalent to IELTS Level 6, would be needed. As Henry Sherrell, Research Officer in the Development Policy Centre at the Australian National University commented; “This is not just a significant change; it is a fundamental break.” [27 April 2017 Inside Story] He reported that in 2015, ACIL Allen Consulting evaluated the Adult Migrant English Program, or AMEP. Its report is the most up-to-date assessment of the English literacy of recent migrants. Just 7 per cent of clients exit at ISLPR 2 (social proficiency, the equivalent of IELTS 4.5) after receiving 500 hours. Of the AMEP attendees who completed 500 hours of training between 2004 and 2012, 0 per cent of new migrants reached the level required for the new citizenship test. The implications of this are clear. Sherrell writes; “But the practical effects of imposing this standard are immense. It amounts to the deliberate exclusion of thousands of new migrants from Australian citizenship. Back in 2015, on the same topic, I wrote, “The worst outcome is permanent exclusion from society because barriers to entry are too high. An English-language test for citizenship would be such a barrier. This exclusion would occur despite an indefinite right to remain in Australia. A tiered, broken system of residency with little longterm hope.” Thus we are witnessing the LNP in the process of establishing an underclass of people who will be denied citizenship, which will grow year after year in the Australian population. This underclass will be denied the right to take part in the full political life of the nation. It will be the death of an inclusive democracy.

Major faith follower managers in national government employment This situation is quite challenging for the authorities as it is unfavourable for national harmony but also at international level, worrying for international spectators who are closely monitoring the development on Sustainable Development Goals 10 and 16 which demands for greater inclusivity for all the countries of the world. Although developing countries are being asserted for achieving the targets of these goals following the footsteps of leading democracies. But these results could never be the enviable for struggling democracies. Contrary to that by 2030, should developed world not be seen at bottom when the result of these goals would finally declared?.

A Non-Citizen Underclass

That is not a new situation for this country. First there was the 1901 Immigration Restriction Act, enforced by a dictation test which did not openly proclaim racial superiority in order not to offend non-British subjects of the empire and the Japanese ally. Then came the 1903 Naturalization Act which provided that applicants for naturalization could not be natives of Asia, Africa or the Pacific Islands (except for New Zealand). Men who had worked in Australia for over a decade would never be acceptable as citizens. One case study is that of Jan Mahomet, a 35 year old Afghan storekeeper and camel-driver, who had worked in South Australia for nearly four years, Coolgardie for over a year and then in Murchison, near Geraldton WA, for eleven years. He received his rejection of naturalisation from the Department of External Affairs in Melbourne in October 1906 about three weeks after submitting his papers. The only sign in the archives of his response is a curt telegram to the Department on 25 October asking for the return of all his papers. He was not European, not white enough. Such non-acceptable residents were excluded from the Age Pension and other social welfare benefits which were gradually introduced over time. There is a discernible trend in Australian government policy towards exclusion of refugees and non-English speaking immigrants from national life. This is a break with the non-discriminatory immigration policies which have dominated since the election of the Whitlam government in 1972, continued by the Fraser Government of 1975. Our country has commenced a decline into what could well be a very unpleasant, undemocratic and culturally exclusive future, at the same time as we seem to be permitting the intrusion of foreign sponsored political corruption into national life. The author is a prominent Australian Muslim scholar and activist.

Pinnacle College - Culture

Broadly, culture represents the social heritage of a group. Culture determines what is acceptable or unacceptable, right or wrong. It encompasses all assumptions, beliefs, norms and values, as well as attitudes, behaviour, dress and language. At Pinnacle College, we are aware of the importance of getting students respect their culture and teaching them all the correct behaviours and

values related to it. Our aim is to help our students become successful citizens who respect the Australian values and adhere to them while keeping their culture and feeling proud of their background. Our teaching strategies and our various subjects that we teach allow us to deliver a variety of opportunities that help students appreciate the different values their culture holds. Besides all the subject areas that the

Australian curriculum requires us to deliver, we teach both the Arabic and the Turkish Language. We use streaming in every Year level which allows us to group students according to their abilities which will result in better outcomes. The teaching of the Arabic Language will help our students read and understand our holy book (The Quran) as well as it helps them with the memorisation of it. Another subject that we offer at

school is Religion and Values. We offer three lessons of Religions and Values per week with one of these lessons being for Quran memorisation. In Quran memorisation, we use a differentiated system where every student will be assigned a new surah that he/she doesn’t know in a weekly basis. This system is helping every single student enhance their learning through continuous assessment and endless motivation. On the 18th of

June, during our Iftar Dinner, we congratulated 30 students out of 165 students from the Gilles Plains Campus for completing at least One Juz’ from our holy Quran. Having students adhere to their cultural values will help them adhere and respect other cultures. It gives them confidence and raises their selfesteem which will leave a trace of honour in them forever.

AFL hosts fourth annual iftar dinner By Mohammad Safar The AFL has held its fourth annual Ramadan Iftar dinner to promote inclusion and cultural understand in Australia. The dinner, which was held at the MCG, featured AFL players, members of the Muslim community, and the CEO of the AFL himself, Gillon McLachlan, who shared a message about tolerance during the dinner. “True sports fans do not see religion or colour, they see talent they see leadership they see commitment they see skill,” McLachlan said. Richmond Tigers star Bachar Houli, one of only two practicing Muslim players in the AFL, said that the AFL has been very supportive of his faith since the introduction of prayer rooms at football stadiums five years ago. “They just feel a part of it to be honest,” Houli said. “Whether you’re watching, supporting or playing you feel a part of it. As soon as you to go a local club people are accommodating. They cater for you.” The Ramadan Iftar Dinner has become a staple of the AFL’s attempts to promote acceptance and tolerance in Australia.

STATE AND FEDERAL OPPOSITION MPs STAND UNITED IN CONCERN FOR THE MALEK FAHD ISLAMIC SCHOOL COMMUNITY Media Release Time is running out for the Malek Fahd Islamic School (Malek Fahd) Community with the Federal Government failing to reach an agreement with the Malek Fahd School Board to extend funding to allow the school to remain open beyond June 30, 2017. This comes after almost eighteen months of uncertainty for the students, families, teachers, school staff and broader community. Malek Fahd has campuses across Sydney with one at Greenacre, within the boundaries of the state electorate of Lakemba. Approximately 2342 students are currently enrolled in Malek Fahd across the campuses including 153 students in Years 11 and 12. Malek Fahd employs over 230 teachers and a large number of nonteaching staff. Malek Fahd is widely acknowledged as a highperforming school, noted by the Administrative Appeals Tribunal in January 2017 in its review of the decision made by the federal government to revoke the funding of Malek Fahd. The same report made special note of the strength of student performance,

Member for Lakemba Jihad Dib MP staff loyalty and community support. Closure of the school will profoundly impact all students but especially those who are completing their senior education. With the prospect of the school’s closure, Mr Dib shares the deep concern of the parents and is equally concerned about the potential impact on other schools within the electorate if the school closes. In the case of the senior students, especially those due to sit their Higher School Certificate Mr Dib is not confident they can be accommodated in neighbouring schools due to their specific curriculum needs

and timetabling restraints. Mr Dib along with Paul Lynch, NSW Member for Liverpool; Anne Stanley, Federal Member for Werriwa; Tony Burke, Federal Member for Watson co-signed a recent letter to the Senator the Hon Simon Birmingham, Minister for Education and Training setting out their shared concern for the Malek Fahd staff, students and parent community. The group called on the Federal Minister for Education to put in place interim measures to allow the school to operate for at least the remainder of the school year. Mr Dib’s involvement in this issue extends back to early 2016 where he relayed the concerns of the parents and broader community to senior members of the Office of The Hon Adrian Piccoli, NSW Education Minister. Mr Dib and his colleagues acknowledge significant changes made by the Malek Fahd Board in addressing the Government’s concerns in relation to governance, restructuring and transparency and note its commitment to achieving the necessary lease agreement to enable the school to remain open. Mr Dib and his colleagues also note that they do not oppose the role the Government is playing

in insisting on high levels of probity and proper governance but note that it appears that students and parents are likely to be the most negatively impacted by the funding decision. “Students and parents who have done nothing but commit themselves to achieving a great education stand to be the most profoundly impacted by this decision to withdraw funding. “I am deeply concerned about the ability of neighbouring schools to absorb over 2,300 students if Malek Fahd closes.

I am worried for the students of Malek Fahd and local schools if the school closes”. Member for Lakemba Jihad Dib MP Said “The NSW Department of Education says it has a contingency plan if Malek Fahd closes – but I am very worried especially for the students about to sit the HSC. Those students have very specific curriculum and timetabling needs that can’t just be ignored” “While I am conscious that this is a Federal funding issue about a non-government school, I will continue to offer my support to the students,

parents, school staff and the wider Malek Fahd community” “I have seen the huge efforts by the school community to address the concerns and change the operational model and problems identified by the Government over the past year and recognise this as a genuine effort to change”. “I commend the teaching staff who have, over the eighteen months, and especially leading up to the HSC demonstrated incredible loyalty and commitment to the success and well-being of students”. Member for Lakemba Jihad Dib MP Said.

GIFT OF KINDNESS

In Need of Dad Jamilah Samian In his biography Common Ground: A Political Life, Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau relates how his father, Pierre Trudeau, then Prime Minister of Canada, juggled his public career with being there for his growing son. When Justin was a baby, his father would typically return home in the day to check on his infant son. Pierre would also invite his cabinet ministers to the Trudeau family’s official home for a working lunch so he’d be able to see his baby. As young Justin grew up, Pierre was there to repair his bike and relate bedtime stories. I often tell people that I believe 50% of the problems in this world will cease to exist if each and every father were to commit to engage with their children from the day they were born till they’re older. Most parents dream of their children becoming smart, successful adults. If you’re a father and you’re reading this, know that your inherent capabilities as a father can spin magic on your sons and daughters. Adolescent boys and girls tend to perform better in school, have less behavioural problems, are more motivated and value education more if fathers play a more proactive role. A father is often cited or perceived as the extra pair of hands to alleviate the mother’s stress in handling children. But studies have proven fathers are worth much more than that. A study carried out by researchers from Imperial College London, King’s College London and Oxford University found that 3-month-old babies whose fathers played with them were smarter at 2 years old. Another study found that toddlers whose fathers played with, and cared for them showed better problem solving skills. This isn’t meant to downplay the importance of mothers; many mothers voiced out their dismay at their spouses’ hesitation to step up and engage with their children even when it’s obvious how a father’s contribution can make a difference to their children’s level of self-confidence and maturity. I see at least two major challenges. First, the man who did not have an involved father in his childhood might not have a clue of how to be one. Second, if a woman did not have an involved father growing up, or had a negative role model e.g. an abusive father, she might unwittingly be the one dominating the parenting role, seeing her spouse as little more than an assistant who is useful when she’s exhausted, unaware that her spouse has innate ways of raising children that she herself is unlikely to provide. The Qur’an mentions fathers multiple times,

which goes to show how hugely significant the father figure is. Examples: Luqman and his son (Qur’an: Luqman: 13); Prophets Ibrahim and Ismail (Q:As-Saffat:101); Yaaqub and Yusuf (Q:Yusuf:16). We also know that the Prophet Muhammad S.A.W. himself was very hands-on with children and youths. Yet, many parents I meet still have the idea that fathers are less relevant than they truly are. We know that mothers are naturally connected to their young by way of giving birth and nursing the child. It’s a given that mothers are endowed with maternal instincts to be there for their children. Know that a father interacts with a child differently in comparison to a mother. The way a father talks, plays, asks questions, teaches, conveys affection, moves about, engages with the child certainly is never the same vis-a-vis the mother. Besides, there’s a natural need, a deep desire, in the hearts of both boys and girls to develop a relationship they can cherish with both parents. If you’re a father who’s looking for ways how to connect with your children, worry no more. A little planning goes a long way. Apart from providing for the family, take time to communicate warmly with your children, run errands together, go for a swim or jog with your son or daughter, have a few rounds of board games. For an older child, you two could perhaps watch a TED video on YouTube followed by a pleasant chat. Spice it up with positively kind gestures: a smile; a touch on the arm; a pat on the shoulder. Now that you know the magic you could harness, give it a go! Let the fun begin. It doesn’t cost money to spend time with your own kids and make your presence felt, yet it could be the best gift for them to cherish.

E ID MUBARAK In the name of Allah the Most Merciful the Most Beneficent. Assalamu alaikom wa’rahmatullahi wa’barakatuh Dear Brothers & Sisters Eid Al-Fitr, is the day of celebration that comes on the completion of the fasting month of Ramadan. It is a joyous occasion, with strong religious significance where charity is an essential part of this special holiday. We must remember that Eid Al-Fitr is also a day that we celebrate the success of our spiritual improvement. This is because we have just completed the month of Ramadan with faith and obedience so that Eid Al-Fitr will become the witness of our success in preparing the provisions we require for the continuing journeys in the course of our life. This joyful and blissful day is celebrated to thank the Almighty for His blessings in the holy month of Ramadan. Thus, it is a time to increase our sense of unity and brotherhood, and our commitment to Allah and His creation. Let us strive to continue to provide support and assistance to all and pray for those who are in need. Let us forgive each other for our errors and shortcomings. The Muslim nation shall not improve unless each and every individual looks at himself, and considers himself directly

responsible for the happiness of all. That shall only happen when each individual gives up selfishness, and replaces it with kindness and consideration. Each individual should uphold the true meaning of what the prophet (SAW) said: ‘A Muslim to a Muslim is like a built up walls which supports and holds one another’. Anas ibn Maalik, (RA), narrated that the Prophet (SW) said, ‘Charity extinguishes the anger of the Lord and protects the giver of it from an evil end’. (Tirmithi) The Prophet (SW) said, ‘The shade of the believer on the Day of Judgment will be his charity’. (Ahmad) Please remember our brothers and sisters who are suffering around the world in your Dua and may all our Dua be accepted Ameen. On behalf of the Executive Committee of Muslims Australia AFIC, I wish you all a blessed and rewarding Ramadan and an enjoyable Eid Al-Fitr. May Allah swt accept our fasting, prayer and good actions during this holy month, Ameen.

Peter Dutton to gain new powers on Immigration By Mohammad Safar New powers planned for Immigration Minister Peter Dutton could redefine citizenship laws in Australia. The proposed new laws will give Mr Dutton the power to overturn citizenship decisions, bypassing any decisions already made by the Administrative Appeals Tribunal. Greens immigration spokesperson Nick McKim says that this could have a harmful impact on

immigrants in Australia. “There are thousands of people who are working, studying and raising families in Australia who will have their lives destabilised,” Senator McKim said. “These are men, women and children who are proud to be in this country, but now face roadblocks because of Peter Dutton’s antiimmigration agenda.” Peter Dutton is also pushing to harden citizenship tests, claiming that it’s critical to national security.

Eid Mubarak from the

ICV President

Dear Brothers, Sisters and our Precious Youth, Asalamu Alaikum Waramathulahi Barakat Eid Mubarak to you

On behalf of the ICV board and staff we would like to extend our warm greetings to you and your families as you celebrate Eid. The holy month of Ramadan has gone by and we hope Allah (swt) will accept all our Saum, salaat, duas and good deeds and forgive us for any transgressions. Ramadan is an opportunity to reflect on our lives and also give one a sense of peace and tranquility. The month has been a time of trial for the Muslim community right around the world. Some have lost loved ones either by natural causes or by tragedy and we pray that Allah (swt) grants jennathul firdouse to those that have left us and sabr to all their families.

Eid Prayers

Our message today as we celebrate Eid is to also remember those who are unable to enjoy this blessed day in the safety of their homes and families. Muslims have been displaced in many parts of the world, especially in the Middle East and are currently in many refugee camps or seeking refuge in nations that are not their own. Please remember them in your thoughts and prayers. The ICV too has not been immune from issues over this period. We would like to thank the Muslim community of Victoria and our friends for rallying to the ICV. Your numerous statements of support both publicly and privately have been very heartening. We are also encouraged by the support of our member societies.

Awqaf Australia Iftar Dinner

Our youth are an important component of our society and we recognise your value and contribution. We will listen to you and work with you to ensure your concerns and ideas are heard. May Allah (swt) guide you and protect you always. We will be working with all our sisters in not only promoting the Muslim community but also breaking down misconceptions and stereotyping that exists. We acknowledge significant role they play in the Muslim Community. We look forward to working with our member societies, the broader Muslim community, and our partners and supporters in the coming year to achieve our goals for a harmonious and inclusive society for all. Personal Reflections on

Ramadan Dr. Rawaa El Ayoubi Gebara

Sydney

Making our lives meaningful by keeping the sacred alive in our ordinary lives can be a form of hospitality. We have to first acknowledge this hospitable disposition in ourselves together with the acts of hospitality, are very important to the cultivation of our inner life but also can be transformable to other people’s lives. Yet, the attitude of hospitality in this special month of Ramadan, towards those around us is essential to a spiritual-centred life. Hospitality that is an essential element of Ramadan is more

than eating: it is friendliness, kind-heartedness and conviviality towards Muslims and non-Muslims. A famous hospitality tradition is related to the Prophet Abraham (peace be upon him) but was rebuked by God for refusing hospitality to a stranger: It is said that a Zoroastrian asked hospitality from the Prophet Abraham; so when he went to prepare food for him, he found out that the stranger was worshipping fire. It was a shock for the Prophet of God who refused to give the stranger hospitality if he did not become Muslim. So the Zoroastrian passed on, and God revealed to the Prophet Abraham: you would not give him food except with his religion changed, and I have fed him for seventy years withstanding his unbelief. If you had given him hospitality for a night, what responsibility would have fallen on you? So the Prophet Abraham set off running after the Zoroastrian and brought him back and gave him hospitality. So the Zoroastrian said to him: By what means did it become plain to you? So he mentioned

it to him. And the Zoroastrian said to him: Does your God deal with me in this way? Show me Islam so that I can become a Muslim. Therefore, hospitality is not limited to food alone, yet food is so essential to hospitality that is known, according to the principles of Islam, giving food for the sake of God is a way of worshiping Him. Alongside this worship, the concepts of gratitude (shukr), patience (sabr) and humility (tawadu’) are really essential in Ramadan in order to attain a stronger spirituality and selfdiscipline. The linking of gratitude to hospitality is to see God as the ultimate provider, so when we eat we should remember that we are dependent on God, and the food that we have is a result of God’s goodness so we can share it with others, “O you who believe, eat of the good things which We have provided you and give thanks to God if it is Him you worship” (Qur’an, 2:172). Gratitude is not only about thanking God for the food but it is also essential to understand the whole process of giving which means that the life has a purpose which is the

goodness of our existence. We are reminded to be grateful to our Creator, but our gratitude to Him can never equal His goodness towards us. Giving food generously to people is another way to show gratitude to God and that we are all guests of God’s hospitality and have this obligation to show this same hospitality to others. The Qur’an reminds us that hospitality cannot be an agreed exchange, rather, it should be given freely and accepted freely: “ And they feed, for the love of God, the indigent, the orphan, and the captive, saying ‘We feed you for the sake of God alone: no reward do we desire from you, nor thanks’” (Qur’an, 76:8-9). Yet serving people or the act of being hospital also relies on a practical wisdom, knowing that patience (sabr) and humility (tawadu’) had to be practised while fasting. These two virtues could be developed through exercising such abstinence. One of the chief keys of self-discipline in Ramadan is averting the desire of the stomach. Harbouring this desire is good for our spiritual awareness and satiety should be avoided. Therefore,

experiencing hunger through fasting reminds us of the story of the Prophet Mohammed (peace be upon him) and his companions who ate little and fasted most of the time in order to purify their hearts and minds and thereby draw nearer to God. Yet, eating is not a sin of self-indulgence, rather eating well with frugality is one of the blessings from God. Furthermore, Islam often associates hospitality with the act of compassion and giving to

the destitute or an act of charity that is focused on the poor or poverty, rather than reduce it as simply entertainment of others. Through hospitality we can nurture this sentiment of compassion with a level of self-discipline to keep our relationships strong with others: that what we call friendship which is a particular kind of hospitable character adding meaning to our lives.

Prime Minister visits Richmond to further invest in Bachar Houli Programs

46

PRIME MINISTER

MESSAGE FROM THE PRIME MINISTER

EID-UL-FITR

The highly-successful Bachar Houli program will be extended to include women and girls, Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull announced today. The new female element – which will be implemented by Richmond Football Club staff – was part of the increased funding of the program announced at the Swinburne Centre at Punt Road Oval. The Bachar Houli Academy is a highperformance football talent program, while the Bachar Houli Cup engages over 5000 Islamic school students - providing a starting point for players from a Muslim background to transition into football pathways. The funding will be used to grown the existing programs and to also include a female component to the Bachar Houli Academy and Schools Cup. Bachar Houli said it was a privilege to be part of the program. “I would like to thank the Federal Government for their continued support of the programs, providing real opportunities for the next generation of boys and girls playing and administering our great game,” Houli said. “Being a part of the program is a great

opportunity for young Australian Muslim boys and girls, providing them with a safe environment to grow culturally and to develop their leadership capacity using football as the vehicle. “I want talented youth across the country to be given the best possible avenue, support and pathway into the elite system and while the Academy aims to recruit talented athletes, it’s not all about football - we want them to grow as people and receive life education, building confidence, awareness and knowledge to succeed.” Richmond CEO Brendon Gale said the club was extremely proud of the continued work of Bachar and his programs in creating both football development and employment opportunities for young Muslim men and women. “Through his work in these programs Bachar has given Islamic children across the country the opportunity to pursue AFL and to learn important positive, leadership skills. To have this expand every year and to now include a female component, where young Muslim girls will have these opportunities, is a fantastic result,” Gale said. Over 30 schools nationally participated in the Bachar Houli Cup. The Bachar Houli

Employment program has employed ten trainees of a Muslim background across the AFL industry nationwide, including our very own Rana Hussain who works in fan engagement and marketing at Richmond. Over the past year, the Bachar Houli programs has delivered: • 10,000 participants across 30 schools nationally • 25 participants selected in the Bachar Houli Acadmey with over 1000 boys participating in state trials • A total of 150 participants have been part of the Academy since its inaugural year in 2012 • Seven participants selected on a leadership camp to the Qatar Aspire Academy • 1000 attendees across five state-based Ramadan dinners • 10 young men and women representing 15 cultural groups employed on 12-month traineeships across a diverse set of roles in the industry. Source: www.richmondfc.com.au Photos : from Bachar Houli FB page

As Ramadan comes to a close, it is my pleasure to wish Australia’s Muslim community a blessed and joyful Eid-ul-Fitr. Ramadan is a month of spiritual renewal and recommitment to the values of gratitude, charity and compassion. As you gather with friends and family to welcome the new crescent moon, I hope you find much delight and fulfilment in this sacred celebration. Eid is also significant as a time to appreciate the freedoms we have to celebrate our various cultural and religious traditions, and to nurture faith from one generation to the next. Modern Australia has been vastly enriched by the Muslim community and by people of every background and tradition, each contributing their own unique and special thread to the multicultural fabric of our society. Australians are truly citizens of the world and our shared commitment to respect, inclusion and peace is one of our nation’s defining achievements. So, as Australia’s diverse Muslim community gathers at this special time, I hope you are inspired and uplifted by these special observances. I wish everyone Eid Mubarak.
