AFP on board for the ninth annual Unity Cup in Melbourne

2016 ‫ هـ ¿ آذار‬1437 ‫ ¿ جمادي الثاني‬65 ‫¿ الوسط ¿ العدد‬

AUSTRALIAN NATIONAL SPORTS CLUB TO BUILD “THE BASE”

Member for Watson Tony Burke announced funding to build a new social and community room called “The Base” at the Australian National Sports Club in Lakemba. The Base will provide locals with a room designed to provide a friendly, accessible space for sports and recreational activities we well as social gatherings. Mr Burke said today’s announcement builds on the important contributions already being made by the Australian National Sports Club in the local area. “The Australian National Sports Club is a great place to play sport, but it’s so much more than that,” Mr Burke said. “The club also hosts social gatherings and learning opportunities, it is a community hub that makes an important contribution to bringing people together and improving community participation. “The Base will make an excellent addition to this wonderful facility,” Mr Burke said.

The AFP, alongside AFL Victoria, and the Essendon Football Club, held the ninth annual Unity Cup on Sunday 20 March at JJ Holland Park in Kensington, Melbourne. The event, which brings together youth from around the state with diverse multicultural backgrounds in a nine-a-side round robin AFL tournament, was a great success. More than 4,000 people attended the event, which was held alongside Kensington’s community festival. AFP Manager Peter Whowell Said that the event greatly strengthens communities through the

means of sport. “The Unity Cup has demonstrated how young people can come together to overcome cultural differences to celebrate inclusion and diversity through sport,” Whowell said. AFL Victoria Diversity Manager Xavier Moloney said the that the event highlights what football is all about. “Football is a sport that welcomes everyone, regardless of their size, ability or background, and this is never more on show than at the Unity Cup,” Mr Moloney said.

Club Duty Manager, Belal Pickering, said The Base would be utilised for workshops and training sessions to build the skills, capacity and knowledge of all users in the local area. “The Base complements the sporting and fitness activities proudly offered by the Club since 1975,” Mr Pickering said. The Australian National Sports Club opens its doors to over 1,200 people every week, with badminton, basketball, soccer and volleyball amongst the most popular sports. The Watson Stronger Communities Programme provides grants of between $5,000 and $20,000 to local not-forprofit community groups for small capital projects. Last year the Watson Consultation Committee, managers of the program, approved 18 projects in the local area. Around $150,000 is expected to announced in community grants throughout this year.

ASPIRING LEADERS UMRAH TOUR 2016

WORTHY CAUSES Australian Islamic Centre VIC

Human Appeal International Australia (HAIA) in coordination with Deen Academy (DA) hosted a group of young Muslim Australians on its second Aspiring Leaders Umrah Tour of five cities - Mecca, Medina, Amman, Istanbul and Dubai. The Tour took place from 3 to 21 February 2016, comprising fifteen participants from Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide. The group of young university students and graduates were led and mentored on the tour by Bashar Al-Jamal, regional director of HAIA and Dr Zac Matthews from DA. The journey commenced with undertaking the minor pilgrimage (umrah) in Mecca, Saudi Arabia. Very little equates to the spiritual enrichment gained from umrah. Worshippers dressed in ceremonial plain white cloth visiting Islam’s holiest mosque, the Kaba, performing rituals of spiritual cleansing as performed by Prophet Abraham and taught by the last and final Prophet of God, Muhammad (peace be upon them both). Tour members spent valuable moments connecting with the Almighty and reconciling their own personal affairs with the Sublime. The City of Light – Medina – the Prophet’s city, where his mosque and grave are located was the second stop of the journey. Being present at the very place where a profound message flourished left an indelible mark on all. Several museums and exhibitions were visited in both historical cities including Assalaamu-alayka AyyuhanNabiy (The Prophet’s Project), the Holy Mosques, Ninety-Nine Names of God, Dar Al-Madinah, etc. The group also visited the Library and Museum within the Prophet’s Mosque in Medinah, the Quran printing complex as well as the historical sites of Arafat, Mina, Quba, and Qiblatain. The most physically demanding event of the stay in Mecca was climbing the 600 steps of the Mount of Light to reach the Cave of Hira where the Prophet first received Divine revelation from the Archangel Gabriel. After renewing spiritual and emotional connections at Islam’s holiest of places, the tour then moved on to the city of Amman in Jordan. It was here that the group visited two separate camps of Syrian refugees. They personally assisted with HAIA’s Winter Aid Appeal

handing out gas cookers, blankets and food packs to more than one hundred Syrian families. The provisions were estimated to last about three weeks in the cold winter. Witnessing firsthand the dire plight of refugees was gut-wrenching. Jordan currently has more than 600,000 Syrian refugees - approximately 80 percent live in urban areas in the north, while the remaining 20 percent live in refugee camps. The group also handed out food and clothing vouchers from monies they personally collected beforehand to two separate groups of orphans. They also attended an inspiring awards ceremony at an Orphan Centre, met with the board of the Conservation of the Holy Quran Society in Amman as well as the Australian Ambassador, Ms Heidi Venamore, and visited historical ruins at Jerash, Um Qais, Ajloun and others. At least two important lessons were reiterated to participants: the need to care for and serve others and the essential requirement to study the Noble Quran. From Amman the group travelled to Istanbul, the city of the Ottoman Empire. Istanbul was equally rich in history and seemed to amalgamate the meeting of East and West. The group’s first stop was to pray at the famous Fatih mosque, followed by Sultan Ahmet, Abu Ayyub Al-Ansari and other significant places. The tour group was fortunate to be hosted by the DeputyMufti of Istanbul, Dr Sabri Demir on a day-long tour of the beautiful city. Other visits included a breath-taking

ferry ride on the Bosphorus River, shopping at the Grand Bazaar and eating delicious beans outside the Suleimaniyeh mosque. The group also attended a workshop on managing public opinion by Dr Nasir Al-Mani` from Anadolu Leadership and Management Training. Other interesting highlights included a soccer match on a coldwinter’s night and a scrub-down in a traditional hamam (bath). From Istanbul the tour moved to Dubai where Human Appeal International has its headquarters. The tour group was graciously hosted by its secretarygeneral His Excellency, Salem bin Ahmad Abdulrahman Al-Nuaimi. The group visited the HAI offices in Ajman where presentations about its orphan program and various other humanitarian projects were observed. The group also participated in a workshop on leadership and did some site-seeing in Dubai. The overwhelming feedback from participants was “a trip of a life time,” one that they would never forget. Special acknowledgment goes to A&H Travel for supporting the 2016 tour. Tour members: Sydney (Mohamed Sharawy, Muhammad El-Hajje, Firas Hammoudi, Ahmed Rafik, Ali Darwich, Omar Afyouni, Ahmad Al-Jamal, Useid Rafiq), Melbourne (Ali Abou-Zeid, Ahmed Souki, Abdullah Sheriffdeen, Amet Balla, Bilal Barakat), Adelaide (Abdulsalam Juma, Yahya Ahmed). Group Leaders: Bashar Al-Jamal, Dr Zac Matthews.

Who is harmed and who benefits?

E u r o p e a n Division of the Muslim Heartland Great Power division of the Muslim world is not uncommon nor unexpected. Ramzy Baroud in a recent article “Plan B- Not an enigma: Why the West is keen on dividing the Arabs” reports on what he sees as the evolving strategy of division from the new RussianAmerican co-operation around the recent Syrian ceasefire negotiations. “In his testimony before a US Senate committee to discuss the Syria ceasefire, Secretary of State, John Kerry revealed that his country is preparing a ‘Plan B” should the ceasefire fail. Kerry refrained from offering specifics; however, he offered clues. It may be “too late to keep Syria as a whole, if we wait much longer,” he indicated.” [1 March 2016 Middle East Monitor] It has all happened before. The Peace Settlements after the First World War established French and British protectorates throughout the Middle East. Although the British had pretended to offer the Arabs independence, they, with the French, had secretly drawn up the Sykes-Picot Plan to divide the Ottoman Territories between them. Russia had left the war in 1917 and was in the throes of revolution and the USA had retreated into isolationism by 1920, refusing to join the League of Nations. France was allocated Syria, Lebanon and some land in southern Anatolia in the 1920 Treaty of Sevres. Britain took control of Palestine. It also took Iraq where, via the British controlled Turkish Petroleum Company, later renamed the Iraq Petroleum Company, it gained major oil

Next time you see or hear of an act of terror, ask yourself these questions: 1 – What was the crime perpetrated by the victims to be subjected to this horror? 2 – After the immediate victims, who receives the greatest harm? 3 –Who stands to benefit from this? With most acts of violence, these questions are relatively easy Keysar Trad to answer, but when it comes to politically motivated terror, the first question becomes very difficult to answer. One of the first results of terrorism is the devastation to the victims, victims who deserve our solidarity, support and sympathy. The second horrific result is that it always divides society, it can divide a nation, and as we have seen recently, it creates a divide in the world. Not all acts of terror are equal, at times, an act of terror is overshadowed by a small act of terror that receives greater publicity. In all cases, these three questions remain very important. For what crime were the victims targeted? Allah Subhanah says: If the buried child is asked for what crime she was killed? (81:8 & 9) This question can be applied to every senseless killing, for what crime? Some stupidly cheer death and destruction thinking the world to be divided into them and us; without the slightest of understanding who is “them” and who is “us”. When Allah commanded the angels to bow to Adam (2:34), the angels were “them”, Adam and all his descendants were “us”. When Allah says: We have honoured the progeny of Adam (17:70). This means we are one honoured humanity. Yes, we have different ideologies, and we have different understandings within each ideology and we can narrow this them and us to the point where even the nuclear family can be divided into husband, wife and children each having a different favourite food or sporting team or brand of car. Yes, this is silly isn’t it? When it comes to humanity, we need to always think in terms of “us”. We are human, we have the same God who created each and every one of us. The same God said: whoever kills a life, it is as he has killed all humanity and whoever saves a life it is as if he saved all humanity (5:32). There is no religious distinction in this verse, no ideological, racial, social status, socio-demographic status or gender distinctions. A life saved is like the saving of all humanity. Who receives the greatest harm after the immediate victims? We have seen Islam as a faith come under attack, we have seen a backlash against Muslims, we have seen views polarised with so many expressing hate towards the religion of peace and its adherents. Who stands to lose the most after the victims? One simple answer: Islam and Muslims. Who benefits? A reflection on this question shows that no one truly benefits, no one. Some non-Muslim haters might savour a shortlived political gain. They might succeed in dividing humanity, in creating hatred and suspicion and a feeling of insecurity, they might generate so much fear that people are looking over their shoulders! The question again: who truly benefits from such a society that is overtaken by fear, suspicion and division? This is the work of Satan. We have been warned by God in most religious scriptures against the designs of Satan, Satan wants to create enmity and hatred amongst us using whatever tool he can. Those who target innocents are doing the work of Satan and Satan alone is pleased with their behaviour. They have rebelled against God and His guidance and have chosen a dark path that can only lead to misery, torment and a very darkened soul.

A Lavrov-Kerry Agreement to replace the Sykes-Picot Treaty?

concessions. The Kingdom of Hejaz was recognized as an independent kingdom. The area now included in Turkey was divided up amongst the French, the Italians, the British, the Greeks and part of western Turkey was allocated to Armenia. The issue of Kurdistan was not decided as there were disputes over whether Van should be Armenian or Kurdish. Eventually it was decided that those living in Turkey were deemed Turks and those in northwest Iraq were deemed Iraqis. Turkey refused to accept this destruction and its resistance led to the 1923 Treaty of Lausanne. The Lavrov-Kerry Plan Ramzy Baroud mentioned what may be involved in this most recent plan: “The possibility of dividing Syria was not a random warning, but situated in a large and growing edifice of intellectual and media text in the US and other western countries. It was articulated by Michael O’Hanlon of the Brookings Institute in a Reuter’s op-ed last October. He called for the US to find a ‘common purpose with Russia’, while keeping in mind the ‘Bosnia model.’ “In similar fashion, a future Syria could be a confederation of several sectors: one largely Alawite - another Kurdish a third, primarily Druse - a fourth, largely made up of

Sunni Muslims; and then a central zone of intermixed groups in the country’s main population belt from Damascus to Aleppo.” Division is a frequently mentioned solution since the 2003 invasion of Iraq. When the resistance to the American occupation became unbearable, Baroud points out “Their intellectuals pondered the possibility of dividing Iraq into three autonomous states: Shia, Sunni and Kurdish.” Then we have the suggested solutions from the American Protectorate under Netanyahu’s government. A statement by the Israeli Chief of Staff to a Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, that Syria will be divided into six distinct regions, gave cause for concern to the region. [15 March 2016 Yenisafak] There has certainly been strongly expressed support for an independent Kurdistan from Netanyahu in 2014 and just recently from Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked.” The Kurdish people are a partner for the Israeli people….The Kurds are an ancient, democratic, peace-loving people that have never attacked any country,” she said, adding that economic cooperation should be on the forefront of any official ties. “It is time to help them.” [Times of

Israel 20 January 2016] The Kurdish YPG, the Democratic Union Party in northern Syria, unilaterally proclaimed a federal system in that part of the country. This was quickly denounced by the Arab League as a ‘secessionist call.’[21 March 2016 Yenisafak] The leader of the Druze Progressive Socialist Party in Lebanon, Walid Jumblatt, predicts the future. “The Syrian Kurds’ announcement of a federal system of government is the beginning of Syria’s division, but the first and last to blame is the Assad regime which suppressed a peaceful uprising from the very first moment it flamed.” He added: “Yesterday it was SykesPicot Accord and today it’s Lavrov-Kerry.” He concluded with a warning: “As a reminder, when Sykes-Picot was put forward a hundred years ago, Turkey’s division was on the table as well.” [20 March 2016 Orient News] Will the Great Powers try to impose their “solution” again, as they did in Sykes-Picot?

What happens if i lie to the Department of Immigration? Assalamu Alaikum I wish to speak to you about an important topic in dealing with the Department of Immigration and Border Protection (DIBP). The Department of Immigration has Public Interest Criteria (PIC) that visa applicants need to satisfy in order to get their visa granted. PIC 4020 contained in clause 4020 of Schedule 4 of the Migration Regulations 1994 requires that the visa applicant: - NOT provide a bogus (fake) document or - NOT provide information that is false or misleading in relation to the visa held This means that in order for your visa to be granted, you need to pass PIC 4020 in that the Department cannot have evidence that you provided false or misleading information or any documentation which is fake. In other words, you cannot lie or mislead the department and you cannot produce false documents in the hope to get your visa. If the Department discover any falsified information, they can reject your visa application, cancel an already granted visa, and place a ban on you applying for an Australian visa in future.

By Mark Pelley

As a Muslim, being upfront and honest should be our way of life. Allah the Almighty says in the qur’an 33:70: “Oh you who believer, fear Allah and speak always the straight way”. Tafsir Ibn Kathir (Vol. 8 p.g 53) makes commentary of this ayat with meaning to tell the full story with 100% truth and to be clear and direct in your speech

with no crookedness or distortion. When a Muslim speaks, they’re not to mix truth with falsehood and they are not to misdirect or mislead people with their speech. Any individual asking you to lie for your visa, is asking you to directly disobey Allah. This is a key topic for Muslims to realise. When dealing with your registered migration agent, always speak truthfully and do not attempt to mislead them. A registered migration agent can help you determine the appropriate course of action given your real circumstances and if you have made a mistake, your migration agent may be able to help you fix it. If you have made an honest mistake in providing incorrect information to the Department, it is better to correct this. Being up front shows that you are honest in your dealings. If the Department discovers your mistake before you do, you will be asked to explain why your visa should not be cancelled/rejected. This process to trying to prove to the Department that you’re not a liar could be very stressful, time consuming and costly. It could also lead to significant delays in your visa processing times even if you are successful. As such, it is always better to tell the truth.

As in this case, a refusal is not always necessarily the end of the road. Please note that there is a time limit on a review of a decision. Once you have received a refusal notification it is advisable to immediately retain a lawyer to review the decision record to see if there is a proper basis for an AAT review.

occasions. The most recent decision record made references to the Applicant being from a country that has been classified by the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade as ‘High Risk”. The client had been previously refused the same visa 2 (two) times. Based on our client’s instructions, and our legal opinion, we lodged an application for review at the Administrative Appeals Tribunal (“AAT”). After providing a detailed and concise legal submission, and two at length hearings, we demonstrated to the Tribunal Member that our client was a genuine entrant under the proposed visa. The Member decided in favour of the Applicant.

Combating Foreign Bribery and Corruptions ASAK and Greetings All. This month’s edition of Al Wasat will be looking at new laws regarding new false accounting laws, which make it a criminal offence to intentionally or recklessly falsify accounting documents. The impetus for these Hyder Gulam new laws was a desire to improve Australia’s Al wasat implementation of Legal Editor the OECD Bribery Convention; the new offences extend to false accounting practices that seek to conceal domestic and commercial bribery, as well as bribery of foreign public officials. Importantly, the offences can be established even if the actual giving or receiving of a bribe is not proved, potentially making it easier for prosecutors to pursue convictions for false accounting offences. These new laws also mean that a person who use an agent or intermediaries to engage in foreign bribery will not immune from prosecution under the foreign bribery laws and make it clear that the actual effect of the bribe is irrelevant. Background. Article 8 of the OECD Convention on Combating Bribery of Foreign Officials in International Business Transactions (“OECD Bribery Convention”), ratified by Australia in 1999, requires state parties to the Convention to create offences of false accounting for the purposes of concealing or enabling bribes to foreign public officials. The new false accounting laws are reflected in the new Accounting Records section of the Commonwealth Criminal Code Act 1995, and are additional to pre-existing Commonwealth, State and territory laws dealing with false accounting. There are two new offences, the first of which applies to companies or individuals that intentionally conceal illegitimate payments by making, altering, or destroying accounting records, or by failing to make or alter accounting records that are required by law to be made or altered. The second applies to companies and individuals that recklessly do so. The relevant intention for the first offence is one to facilitate, conceal or disguise the giving or receiving of a benefit that is not legitimately due, or a loss not legitimately incurred. The second offence requires that the accused be reckless about those matters - that is, aware of a substantial risk that their conduct would result in the outcomes described. “Accounting document” is defined broadly and includes: • any account; • any record or document made or required for any accounting purpose; or • any register under the Corporations Act, or any financial report or financial record within the meaning of that Act. The new provisions specify it is not necessary for the prosecution to prove the giving or receiving of a benefit, or loss to another person, or that the accused intended that a particular person receive or give a benefit or incur a loss. This is significant, because it removes the need for prosecutors to establish actual payment or receipt of bribes, or the targeting of a particular person in doing so. Under the new provisions, it is enough to show that the manipulation of records was done intending to facilitate, conceal or disguise illegitimate payments (or being reckless about doing so). Penalties. The maximum penalties for a contravention are significant. Individual offenders face: • 10 years imprisonment and/or a fine of $1.8 million, for the intentional offence; or • five years imprisonment and/or a fine of $900,000, for the reckless offence. The Attorney-General’s consent must be sought before action is brought against the conduct of a non-Australian citizen or non-Australian company and the conduct occurs outside of Australia. Conclusion. The new laws are an important step towards heightened foreign bribery enforcement action in Australia, which casts a wide next to even acts overseas, which the Ummah should be keep in mind. Till next time, Masalama.

Interconnectedness of Civilisations:

Islam and the West Professor Mohamad Abdalla

An objective study of Islam, Islamic civilisation and ‘European’ and/or ‘Western’ civilisations reveals a more positive picture than otherwise. In his article, Islam and the Cultural Imperative, Dr Umar Faruq AbdAllah (formerly Wymann-Landgraf), demonstrates: For centuries, Islamic civilisation harmonized indigenous forms of cultural expression with the universal norms of its sacred law. It struck a balance between temporal beauty and ageless truth and fanned a brilliant peacock’s tail of unity in diversity from the heart of China to the shores of the Atlantic. Islamic jurisprudence helped facilitate this creative genius. One of the greatest manifestations of this attitude, and one that speaks volumes about interconnectedness, is the translation movement. From the middle of the 8th to the middle of the 11th century: A systematic, elaborate, sustained, and well-organised translation movement brought almost all philosophical and scientific books available in the Near East and the Byzantine Empire into Arabic (Iqbal 2009, p.27). Instead of obliterating the ancient knowledge of the Greeks, the Islamic civilisation created and supported a translation movement that was a highly complex phenomenon of cross-cultural transmission that involved a very large number of people of diverse interests. It was a translation movement the like of which has not been seen, lasted for 300 years and large amount of data and theories that came from Greek, Persian and Indian sources were not passively translated for later transmission to Europe. The Islamic civilisation appropriated, edited and added to the wealth of knowledge that it inherited particularly from the Greeks, which was later used to connect Europe to its historical roots. The critical attitude was not accidental nor a passing phenomenon; but it gave rise to a novel tradition of shukuk literature, which: 1.doubted the various assumptions of Greek knowledge, 2.called for a re-examination of observational data, 3.produced texts that dealt with internal contradictions, and 4.produced a critical attitude toward

translated texts. Two excellent examples of this kind of literature are Razi’s Doubts Concerning Galen, and Ibn al-Haytham’s Doubts Concerning Ptolemy. The story of astronomy The story of Islamic astronomy is a fascinating one, not only because of its significance to the grand narrative of the history of science, but also for the wealth of knowledge it provides regarding the cultural and intellectual interconnectedness of two seemingly opposing worlds, ‘Islam’ and the ‘West.’ Until very recently, it was conventional belief that no original and innovative research was produced in the field of astronomy after Ptolemy (d. 150 B.C.), until the time of the renowned sixteenth century Polish scientists Nicolaus Copernicus (d.1543 C.E.). However, more recent research has begun to indicate that as early as the eight century Muslims appropriated, translated, edited and added their own original contributions to the ancient sciences of the Greeks, Persians and Indians. They did much important ground work for later changes in the Latin West in the development of trigonometry, astronomical instruments and the Latin catalogues of stars, and also affected the growth and development of astronomical theory proper. Indeed, contributions made during this period were fundamental to the birth and subsequent development of astronomy in the west, and played an important role in the Copernican revolution, which ultimately influenced the Renaissance. For example, Muslim astronomers pointed out that Ptolemy’s mathematical models which describe the behaviour of physical spheres were ‘fundamentally flawed in that they implied a contradiction between the physical properties of those spheres and the manner in which their motions were described mathematically’ (Sabra 1998: 288). Dissatisfied with the Ptolemy’s models astronomers at the Margaha observatory argued against Ptolemy and paved the way to establish two new mathematical models invented by al-‘Urdi and al-Tusi, known as the Tusi Couple and the ‘‘Urdi’s Lemma’. Satisfied with their new model they urged other astronomers to accept it and to reject that of Ptolemy. Later, Copernicus echoed these original contributions in his

De Revolutionibus (Saliba 1996: 92-93). Amongst the most famous of astronomers was ‘Ala al-Din Ibn al-Shatir (d. 1375), a time-keeper working at the central Umayyad mosque of Damascus. A brilliant astronomer, he was able to ‘develop one of the most successful attempts at overhauling Greek astronomy’ (Saliba 2007: 162). He produced a model that was greatly superior to that of Ptolemy’s and which was mathematically equivalent to those of Copernicus, elaborated some 150 years later (King 1983: 538). Copernicus ended up relying so heavily on the works of Ibn al-Shatir when he used, among other things, a lunar model that was identical to that of Ibn al-Shatir, and used the same Tusi Couple, in the same fashion as was done by Ibn al-Shatir, in order to account for the motion of Mercury (Saliba 2007:164). The importance of this was not known until late in the 1950s, when E. S. Kennedy discovered that Ibn al-Shatir’s models were mathematically equivalent to those of Copernicus found in his significant work (“On the Revolutions of the Celestial Spheres”). While working on the mathematical astronomy of Copernicus, Otto Neugebauer (noi-ga-bawer), AustrainAmerican professor of the history of mathematics and science, came across an Arabic text that contained the theoretical astronomy of Ibn al-Shatir. Although Neugebauer did not read Arabic, he was able to immediately see that Ibn al-Shatir’s lunar model was identical to that of Copernicus’s even though it had been produced some 200-300 years earlier. Discussion of the newly discovered text led Victor Roberts to publish an article in Isis titled ‘The Solar and Lunar Theory of Ibn al-Shatir: A pre Copernican Copernican model’ (Saliba 2007: 196). The finding and subsequent publication caused a stir in the scholarly community because it was conventional belief that Renaissance science was a European creation, and that it was not influenced or inspired by Islamic sources. The question that has since occupied scholars in this field is not whether Copernicus learned from the Muslim astronomers/mathematicians, but when and how? Clearly, development in astronomy in the Islamic civilisation and subsequently in Europe speaks volumes about a positive cooperation that was vibrant between ‘Islam’ and the ‘West’.

Muslims Australia - AFIC’s problems and the way forward Accountability is a core Islamic requirement and Muslim unity is an Islamic obligation Keysar Trad Many of our brothers and sisters have been subjected to a barrage of anonymous emails laden with incredible allegations against Muslims Australia (AFIC) and the individuals charged with the responsibility of taking AFIC forward. Muslims Australia, AFIC, is the umbrella organisation for mainstream Australian Muslims. During its 50 year history, MA,AFIC has succeeded over the years with the blessings of Allah Ta’ala, in establishing 8 schools around Australia (6 with one having 3 campuses making a total of 8). These schools provide education to nearly 7000 Muslim children from the Kindergarten level to year 12. These MA,AFIC schools have helped our children matriculate into the top university courses and become pillars of Australian society. These schools showed that if one takes away discrimination and Islamophobia and provides quality education, then our children can do just as well as the children who go to the

more expensive private schools. Schools are only some of MA,AFIC’s proud achievements. MA,AFIC has led the way in Halal certification, the support of mosques and Imams and the promotion of a better understanding of Islam not only in Australia, but in other countries as well. IT was not one committee that did this, but rather a progression of committees o v e r MA,AFIC’s 50+ years serving the Muslims of Australia. MA,AFIC is going through some hurdles at the present time, every organisation faces a phase when it must either reinvent itself and excel above the challenges it faces or dissipate and leave its achievements and resources unprotected. Over the past 8 years MA,AFIC and its schools have faced some very difficult challenges. At the forefront of these challenges are staff and board members refusing to let go when they

should have retired or when they became too ill-equipped to deal with the challenges that have attacked our community. Instead of taking a break or bowing out gracefully, many of these individuals have embarked on a destructive campaign of defamation and destabilisation. Four years ago, a principal resigned, his supporters started a petition asking the government to appoint an administrator for the school because they didn’t want him to resign. More recently, changes to school boards, rather than being addressed through internal mechanisms, were taken to government and media leading to significant scandals. We live in an environment where allegations against Muslim organisations are more often than not are treated as facts by some in the media and politics because our entire faith is viewed with suspicion. Having said that, I do take note that the government audit did highlight some serious problems that needed to be addressed. A

ICV Hospital Chaplaincy’s Good Friday Appeal 2016

The ICV’s Hospital Chaplaincy Team proudly raised $20,000 for the 2016 annual Royal Children Hospital’s Good Friday Appeal, on Friday 25th March under the #TeamHammoud campaign. The ICV last year also raised $20,000 via its member societies and this year chose to raise the funds under the name of our 7 year old little brother Hammoud Sammak who is suffering from Down Syndrome and advanced stage leukaemia. We make Dua for little Hammoud and may Allah (swt) grant him shifa and all children in all forms of health needs. Sr Lina Ayoubi, Hospital Chaplaincy

Co-ordinator championed the cause of little Br Hammoud and raised funds via the online appeal https://2016goodfridayappeal. everydayhero.com/au/icv-hospitalchaplaincy-and-team-hammoud2016-g-frid Sr Lina says “we are most humbled by the opportunity to contribute, to serve all and in particular raise to the awareness the plight of children suffering from Down Syndrome – our heart goes out to all our children” The ICV Hospital Chaplaincy team presented a large presentation cheque to the CEO of the Children’s Hospital. Dr Aladin Zayegh, chair of the Hospital Chaplaincy services said

“this was a great community effort. A tribute of the Muslim communities contributing towards important causes that serves the whole of society”. Br Saban Han, veteran chaplain volunteer said “may Allah (swt) reward all efforts and bless everyone for attending to the needs of our sick and in particular our children. A very humbling day for us all”. According the ABS Census data 29% of the Muslim population is under the age of 14 hence equating to around 60,000 Muslim kids in Victoria, who at some time and some capacity would have visited the Children’s Hospital.

reading of the audit report clearly shows that the bulk of these serious problems were the responsibility of contract staff. MA,AFIC took these matters seriously and where necessary, certain individuals have been referred to the police for fraud investigation. Some school contractors have acted as if they own the school. MA,AFIC faced the blame and the sacked contractors joined the anti-MA,AFIC chorus. If one was to trace the source of many of the “anonymous” emails, one will quickly find that they are coming from two disgruntled former contractors and these contractors are defaming everyone they perceive as an opponent. This is slanderous backbiting that is strictly forbidden in Islam, yet here we are and this is coming from people who invariably assume the moral high ground and criticise anyone and everyone for the slightest mistake.

Our community organisations are improved if we get involved and be courageous enough to ask the difficult questions and insist on making each other accountable. Palm Sunday March

The Palm Sunday March in Melbourne held on Sunday the 19th of March 2016 calling for Justice and a Fair go for the refugees and Asylum seekers was attended by nearly 15.000 people from many communities, faiths and organisations. The march started at the State Library to Alexandra gardens. Many speakers requested for a change in polices with regard to offshore detention centres and a more humane treatment of refugees and Asylum seekers. Speakers included members of different faiths, former refugees, politicans. Daniel Webb from the Human Rights Law Centre stated that the doctors refusing to discharge baby Asha from the Lady Cilento Hospitals, Brisbane is just one example of the change of in public opinion about offshore

detention policy. He also stated that every single state premier, support calls for Malcolm Turnbull to show some compassion The Muslim communities were well represented at this years march the ICV Executive Vice President Mohamed Mohideen as a speaker called for • The Federal Government to change its current policies and seek to close down off-shore detention facilities. • All children and their families together should be removed from all detention centres and allowed into society • Australia to take a lead on a humane and practical approach to supporting those who are vulnerable and in need irrespective of race or religion. Br Mohideen further saying “Our first priority must be families, women and children who need the fundamental resources such as education, medical and financial support. The demonization of Refugees has to stop. These are people who are fleeing persecution and oppression – not of their ownmaking – who need a caring and open armed approach and in return those people will eventually give back to the Australian society making it much more stronger and vibrant country where all people are equal”

OPINION ¿ ALWASAT ¿ Issue 65 ¿ Jumada Al-thani 1437 ¿ March 2016

Justice is the supreme goal of Shari’ah

Dr. Rawaa El Ayoubi Gebara Sydney The concern for justice is a major preoccupation of Shariah: justice is the supreme goal and objective of Shariah. Since there is a connection between the message of Islam and the preceding scriptures as I mentioned in my previous article, God has sent scriptures and Messengers in order to establish justice among people. In Islam, justice is an essential part of the faith and of the character of believer. As the Quran asserts: O ye who believe! stand out firmly for justice, as witnesses to Allah, even as against yourselves, or your parents, or your kin, and whether it be [against] rich or poor: for Allah can best protect both. Follow not the lusts [of your hearts], lest ye swerve, and if ye distort [justice] or decline to do justice, verily Allah is well-acquainted with all that ye do. (Quran 4:135) So, to believe in God and bear witness to His message before the whole of humankind means holding the fundamental values He has revealed, such as honesty, faithfulness, fairness and justice. The Quranic criterions of justice are unbiased in that they are not affected by consideration of religious, racial or tribal sentiments. “And let not hatred of a people divert you from the path of justice. Be just as it is closest to excellence in piety” (Quran 5:8). Muslim’s great contribution to justice in the history of Islam was an important factor of attracting people to Islam. The respect to all human beings regardless of their races and religions was the basic standard of justice. The example of the second Caliph Umar given illustrates this point. Once during his caliphate, Amr ibn al-Aas, who was the then governor of Egypt, arranged a horse race in which his own son was also to participate. His son’s horse lost to a young, native Copt. The son, Muhammed ibn Amr, was enraged and lashed the Copt boy with a whip, saying, “Take that! That will teach you to beat the son of a nobleman!” The Copt came to Medina and complained to the Caliph, who took it upon himself to institute an inquiry. When he found that the Copt had been beaten unjustly, he immediately sent an emissary to Egypt to summon the governor and his son before him forthwith. When they arrived, he handed the

Copt a whip to flog them, just as he himself had been flogged. In the presence of the governor, the Copt started whipped his son, stopping only when he was satisfied that the punishment had been severe enough. Then the Caliph addressed himself to the governor: “O Amr, since when have you enslaved people who were born free?” Another example, when Umar suspended the implementation of punishments for poor thieves in times of famine, because most of them were stealing out of necessity due to hunger, poverty and drought. While this decision contradicted a verse from the Quran, he justified his decision by stating the principles of justice and fairness were significant for the preservation of life, which is the first necessity of the higher objectives of Shariah. The literal implementation of punishments dealing with offenders may run against justice, the supreme goal of Shariah. The third example from the caliphate of Ali ibn abi Talib, the fourth caliph when he lost his coat of armour. One day he saw a Christian of Kufa selling the same one in the market. This case was brought to the then judge Shurayh bin al Alharith. The Caliph Ali went to his court where he was asked by the judge to produce two witnesses. He then brought forward his son Hasan and his servant Qambar. The judge rejected the evidence of his son on the grounds that the evidence of a son in support of his father is not acceptable. Thus the reigning Caliph lost his case. However, the Christian was so greatly impressed at the display of such equality in the court of Islam between the Caliph and a normal citizen, that he himself admitted that Ali was right. The coat of armour did belong to him. How can this kind of justice be applied again? In reflecting on the demand of justice, the juristic argument about human diversity and co-operation is especially important as the Quran states God created people differently and set them into nations and tribes so they would come to know one another (Qur’an 48:13). Muslim scholars explain the expression “come to know one another” indicates the need for social co-operation and mutual assistance to achieve justice. Accordingly, the perception of Islam today raises vital questions in terms of how Muslims understand and practice their faith. Thus, the challenge for Muslims is to re-examine their conception of Islam in the context of contemporary societies; to develop an agreeable methodology for interpretation; “and to recapture the essence of Islamic teachings as a faith principally concerned with fulfilling the will of God through social justice, human dignity and the overall well-being of humanity”. People are commanded by God to incorporate ethics and morality into their moral practices and daily transactions. To establish peace on earth, justice, honesty and truthfulness are the significant principles to be applied. Applying and upholding justice that one can learn from the Quran is crucial for the enhancement of peace and morality in the community (49:910).

GIFT OF KINDNESS

A Dream I Shall Never Forget Jamilah Samian Let me begin by sharing with you something personal. Not too long ago, I had a dream. In it I saw someone walking with steady steps towards some place far, far away. For some reason, he didn’t look left or right, though I must say all around him was Nothingness. On one shoulder he balanced a sturdy stick at the end of which, hang a load in a sack. On and on he walked, until the dream faded away. It took me a while to realize what the dream meant. Everyone of us is on a journey called Life. Slowly but surely, whether we wish or not, we are all moving towards a certainty called Death, the door to the Other Side. As we move along towards Death, at every moment in Life, you and I decide what to put into the load we carry on our shoulder. Nobody knows how long his journey will be, when he will pass through Death’s Door. Wouldn’t it make sense to lighten the load, to only choose things that really matter, that can help you in the long run? Treasures like courage, honesty, wisdom, kindness, forgiveness, compassion; these should go right in. On the contrary, isn’t it logical that we remove or leave behind stuff that can only hurt or weigh us down, like hatred, envy, jealousy, enmity? Question is, what are we

teaching our children about Death and the legacy each of us are leaving behind? It might seem like too heavy a matter to talk about with children. But believe me, given the right words, tone and approach, any parent could teach their children these lessons, and help them see the transient nature of Life, and focus on Things That Really Matter. A son of mine once said, “One lesson sorely missing from our education is Philosophy.” I tend to agree, although it might not be the same where you come from; different countries have distinct education systems. But on the whole, we do tend to sidestep issues like Purpose of Life and Death, when these are so important for us to understand growing up. Never mind if Death sounds so grim! I remember when my mother passed away, it initially brought me so much grief, despite knowing full well it was inevitable, given her prognosis. My father’s passing several years earlier was not easy for me either. Today, not a day goes by without me thinking of them, of their sacrifices. But instead of sadness, I am motivated to do whatever I can in memory of them. I never knew that the death of a beloved can have such a positive impact on one’s life. Imagine, if we were to be more comfortable discussing the Purpose of Life and Death in the open, despite the seriousness of the concepts of Life and Death.

We would be more at peace in our daily lives, more accepting of personal losses, more grateful for the blessings, no matter how little they are. If we were to ponder more on Death, perhaps we might be less anxious about the future. We would rather focus on what we can do now, more than spending hours of sleepless nights worrying about the uncertain tomorrow. Or blaming someone else for something that fails to work, rather than taking an honest look at ourselves and searching deep inside, to see what we could do to help make things a little better. That, I believe, would be a kinder way to live, for ourselves and everyone who happens to cross paths with us in this journey called Life.

Thought of the Moment “A good leader takes a little more of his share of the blame, a little less than his share of the credit.” – attributed to Arnold H.Glasgow

Message from the President

Assalaamu Alaikum, On the home front, firstly, Alhamduillah, I want to thank my committee members, state council chairmen, community leaders and advisers for their resolute focus and support in ensuring our children’s education at all our schools, Insha’Allah is secured. We have worked extremely long and hard addressing issues of concern identified by the last government audit report. We had to make difficult decisions to maintain the exemplary standard of education offered to children at MFIS in Sydney, ICB - Brisbane, LIC - Perth, ICOSA - Adelaide and ICOM in Melbourne. AFIC will continue to establish and maintain educational institutions that cultivate and nurture learning, promote educational excellence within an Islamic environment and prepare our children to best face the challenges ahead. Our former students are our badges of honour – they have gone on to pursue successes and excellence in their chosen careers as doctors, lawyers, engineers, teachers (to name just a few professions) and these former students make a fantastic contribution to Australian society. We praise and thank Allah SWT for His countless gifts that we receive and I pray and ask Allah SWT to direct our efforts to all that is good and to bless these efforts, Aameen. Until next time, Insha’Allah. Assalaamu Alaikum

AFIC HISTORY In 1963 the Australian Muslim community adopted an organisational structure for the cause of Islam in Australia. At the grass roots level local Muslims formed Islamic Societies to serve their basic needs in terms of education and prayer facilities. The building of Mosques and providing religious education became the primary objective. The Islamic Councils of each State and Territory united to form State Islamic Councils representing their respective Muslim communities at the peak State level. At the national level the State and Territory Islamic Councils formed the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils Inc (AFIC), as the national umbrella organisation for Australian Muslims representing Islam and Muslims at a national and international level. AFIC has its head office in Sydney with branch offices in Melbourne. As a democratic organisation, AFIC holds Federal Council Meetings with all State and Territory affiliates quarterly and an Annual Congress with all State , Territory Councils and Societies participating. The AFIC Committee of Management is elected every three years by the Annual Congress.

OUR MISSION The mission of AFIC is to provide service to the community in a manner that is in accordance with the teachings of Islam and within the framework of Australian law. To advocate on behalf of the Muslim community on all such matters that will affect the community’s relevance, settlement and integration within Australian society. The main role of AFIC is to represent Islam and Muslims of Australia as one “Ummah” to the government and other bodies nationally and internationally. AFIC coordinates and provides resources for activities of its State Islamic Councils and member Islamic societies.

Muslims Australia –AFIC lauds the AFL for taking quick action against bigotry 2 April 2014 “Whilst Muslims Australia does not wish to give any publicity to the unashamed bigotry displayed in a banner by some patrons to the Pies/Tigers AFL match, we believe that it is important to stand by the AFL and every person who condemned the bigotry for their decisive action and their declaration that they will not tolerate bigotry and racism.” Said Mr. Hafez Kassem, President of Muslims Australia, the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils. “The AFL statements and actions since that offensive banner are to their credit and we hope that this attitude will be maintained by all sporting codes and events to ensure that Australia will continue to promote social harmony and cohesion.” Said

Mr. Kassem. “The bigots behind the banner succeeded in proving that mainstream Australia rejects their bigotry and that the majority of us proud Australians are the true patriots through our positive efforts to be inclusive, fair and reasonable to all Australians regardless of their faith or cultural background. Whilst I do understand the media’s normal practice of putting a context to our support for the actions of the AFL, we humbly request that, in this instance, the media does not give oxygen to the bigots and focuses mainly on the positive outcomes.” Said Mr. Keysar Trad, newly elected Treasurer of Muslims Australia. CONSTRUCTION BEGINS ON LANDMARK

GREEN SQUARE TOWER Architect Koichi Takada

This is indeed correct, as this is not the only major project being undertaken in the area. The $575 million development project is part of a $8 billion investment into redevelopment of the Green Square area. The City of Sydney is also pledging $540 million over the next decade in order to build libraries, parks, civic plazas, children’s centres, and leisure centres in the area. The tower, which was designed by Koichi Takada Architects, will stand 20 storeys tall on 1180 square metres of land, with a very unique ‘loop’ based design. The design in itself is not only aesthetic, as the large void left creates a perfect well for natural light to flourish within the tower’s central courtyard. The tower will feature up to 30 retail outlets, restaurants,

and cafés on the lower floors, as well as a conference centre that’ll hold up to 450 people. The rest of the tower will consist of amenities and of course, apartments, which went on sale last year, where $380 million worth of apartments were sold in just one day. “When completed, Infinity will be home to hundreds of new residents, its eateries and retail outlets will facilitate new jobs, while a new conference facility in the building will attract new events to Green Square,” Moore said. The tower is located just four kilometres from Sydney Airport, and three kilometres from the Sydney CBD. The project is set to be completed in 2019, bringing with it housing and jobs to the fastest growing area in Sydney.

Construction has officially begun on a new luxury tower in Sydney’s Green Square. The iconic, and award winning ‘loop’ shaped tower, called the ‘Infinity tower’, promises to permanently change the Green Square area. Crown Group, the prestigious property development organisation that is behind the new infinity tower, held a ground-breaking ceremony on the 17th of March to mark the beginning of the tower’s construction. This event was attended by Crown Group’s CEO Iwan Sunito, and Sydney Lord Mayor Clover Moore. “Infinity by Crown Group will set a new benchmark in city living and architecture” Sunito said.

Rick and Richard Mitry named in Australia’s top 50 unsung business heroes Sydney Bureau We were not at all surprised to see the pictures of Rick Mitry and his son (and fellow lawyer) Richard on the cover of 50 Unsung Business Heroes published by Purpose Publishing with a forward by the Australian Treasurer the Hon. Scott Morrison. Our community have come to know Rick Mitry as a tireless lawyer who has taken cases involving governments, ambassadors, the police and a

variety of powerful bodies to make sure that the Aussie battler gets a fair go. Mitry has produced outstanding results in Australia’s often convoluted legal system. More recently, Mitry has assisted the Muslims Australia (AFIC) schools to ensure that they meet government requirements so that funding can be resumed. The Al Wasat family congratulates Rick and Richard Mitry and Mitry Lawyers for their recognition and outstanding success.

Malcolm Turnbull is making it harder for pensioners in our local area to continue to receive a full pension while travelling overseas. The changes apply to pensioners who have spent less than 35 years of The Hon Tony Burke MP their working life in Shadow minister for finance Australia. Manager of opposition business These pensioners Member for Watson can currently stay overseas for 26 weeks while receiving the full pension, the Liberals want to cut this back to six weeks. Our area of Sydney is one of the most multicultural in Australia with more than 55 per cent of residents born overseas. Many pensioners save for years to travel overseas in retirement to visit family and friends or return to their country of birth. Sometimes people travel to care for sick or dying relatives, this will be made more difficult because of this change. Pensioners have worked hard their whole lives and deserve respect in their retirement. Labor is standing up for pensioners by opposing the Turnbull Government’s cuts to the pension.

MUSUEM OF AUSTRALIA MONTH OF MARCH Islamic Coins: A journey Through Islamic Civilisation Exhibition

The final event for this month was the show stopping launch of the much anticipated Islamic Coins: A journey Through Islamic Civilisation Exhibition launched on Friday the 11th of March. Two months of collaborating between the IMA and the Dubai Culture & Arts Authority and Emirati historian and numismatist, Mr Abdulla Bin Jassim Al Mutairi, culminated in a showcase of one hundred gold Islamic dinars. These coins span over 1300 years, originating from the Umayyad dynasty up until the Ottoman Empire. A series of wall panels depicting the leadership trajectory of Caliphs in these regions, spanning over 18 territories, tell the stories of the how these coins were passed down through the ages. All one hundred coins have been meticulously displayed across ten glass cabinets, highlighting the intricate

details and dates of their circulation. In addition, a series of ‘fun fact’ panels have been laid out, describing the various items that dinars were traded in historically as well as how they are traded and bought today. The central space of the exhibition comprises a floor mounted map upon a wooden plinth. This map of the Islamic region encompasses all the coins’ backgrounds, providing a visual aid to the visitor, as numerous flags placed along the map are colour coded to match corresponding panels alongside coin cabinets. The launch of Coins was well attended with a mix of media, community leaders, academics, museum supporters and industry colleagues. The consensus view echoed by the special guest, Mr Al Mutairi, suggested this exhibition beautifully presented the golden dinars, doing their history justice. The combination of the coins,

panels, fun facts, map with flags and six minute video presentation of coins and map histories playing on loop, combined to provide contrasting mediums for appreciating the value of these dinars. A massive thank you to Mr Al Mutairi for generously loaning the IMA these pieces from his prize collection of over 15,000 coins. His knowledge on their individual histories was fascinating to behold. Thanks also to principal sponsor, Piety Investments for their valuable contribution in making this exhibition a success. Finally, a huge thank you to the IMA’s General Manager, Ash Naim for his stewardship of this project, along with Tasneem Chopra, Senior Curator and admin officer Ben Steyne. The combined efforts of the IMA staff and volunteers made this exhibition a team effort par excellence – the first exhibition for 2016.

THE ISLAMIC HAS A SPECTACULAR This March, the IMA enjoyed three significant events in its organisational calendar. This showcase of events, signals the ongoing commitment to innovative and quality service standards that has become the signature of the IMA brand.

International Islamic Arts Symposium

The first of these events took place on Saturday 5th of March with the IMA’s inaugural International Islamic Arts Symposium on the topic of ‘Does Art Effect Social Change?’ Principally funded by the Council for ArabAustralian Relations (CAAR), this event was two months in the making. Its goal was to showcase the perspective from art practitioners, curators and industry experts on the way their disciplinary field effected social change to wider society. Guest speakers included representatives from the UAE including Mr Abdulla Bin Jassim Al Mutairi and Moustafa Fahour from Dubai and Dr Ulrike Al Khamis from Sharjah. Within Australia, speakers hailed from five cities, including from Melbourne; Issam Nabulsi (Desypher), Padmini Sebastian (Immigration Museum), and Tasneem Chopra (Curator, IMA). From Sydney; Ahmad Al Rady (Bankstown Poetry Slam), Tom Toby (Heaven to Heaven, Photography) and Kamal Saleh (Poet). From Adelaide, Manal Younus (Poet) and Houssam Abiad (CAAR Board). From Perth; Dr Stefano

Carboni (WA Gallery) and from Canberra, Fatima Killeen (Printmaker). This was a combination of presentations, panel discussions and spoken word performances - culminating in a day long intensive, to a sold out audience. Delivering a program that critiqued and promoted the power of art as a medium for change making was a museum first. Consensus feedback suggested another such event

should be a staple in the IMA’s event calendar. The calibre of presentations was high end, eliciting strong emotions and buy-in from the audience throughout the day. This event would not have been possible without the formidable team efforts of GM Ashraf Naim, Senior Curator, Tasneem Chopra and their team. The timing of the Islamic Arts Symposium was strategically placed a day prior to the IMA

The Deputy Lord Mayor for the City of Adelaide, Houssam Abiad

Annual Gala Dinner The second event to follow was the IMA’s fourth Gala Dinner held at the lavish Bell City reception on the 6th March 2016. A night to remember, the Gala included an impressive line-up of speakers, starting with Aboriginal elder Ron Murray, who spoke of the respectful relationship Macassan fisherman fostered with Aborigines centuries ago. Patron Ahmed Fahour reaffirmed the positive role and need for IMA in reclaiming the narrative on Islam in today’s challenging times. Award winning journalist Tahmina Ansari, inspired the audience as she recounted the obstacles she overcame to become the first hijab wearing journalist on television. Peter Drew, a talented young artist introduced his ground breaking campaign, “Real Australians Say Welcome.” This arose as a means to counter anti-refugee sentiment across Australia

and Peter shared his story and told of the enormous support he received. He went on to announce his next project, using crowd funding to place 1000 posters of pioneering outback cameleer, Monga Khan labelled “Aussie” - all over Australia, challenging the popular notion of what it means to be a true Australian. The event was hosted by IMA co-founder Maysaa Fahour who kept the evening moving smoothly along with grace, wit and humour. The audience enjoyed an ‘Oud & guitar musical ensemble and a gourmet three course meal. Much needed funds were raised for the IMA through the silent auction of premium items, including a stunning lyrebird mosaic by Anisa Sharif. Such a successful event could not be possible without the support of our valued sponsors, all attendees and the IMA staff and volunteers who worked tirelessly to make it all happen.

Gala Dinner on Sunday 6th March. Our guest speakers were therefore able to attend this premier IMA dinner event and further network with Melbourne’s arts community as well as key stakeholders of the IMA including government and business leaders. As an exercise in inter country diplomacy these two function promoted the goodwill ethic of the IMA, pursuant to our charter and realised in our program initiatives.

Member For Lakemba Jihad Dib Joins The Labor Front Bench Mohammad Safar Member of parliament for Lakemba Jihad Dib has been promoted to the New South Wales Labor party’s frontbench, following an announcement from opposition leader Luke Foley. Mr Dib, who was elected to the Legislative Assembly in 2015, has been named the Shadow Minister for Education, for his past experience as a reforming high school principal within the public school system. “I am incredibly honoured to be in this position and congratulate other colleagues who have also joined the Shadow Cabinet”. Dib said. He joins 21 other members of the NSW Labor party in the NSW Shadow cabinet, including nine female members, the highest in the state’s political history. “I’m proud to be part of a talented and diverse Shadow Cabinet – one with nine women on the front bench and people from a variety of cultural backgrounds”. Dib said. Dib, who is best known for his work in reforming Punchbowl Boys High School from a ‘tough’ school into one that has been a beacon within the community, ensures that a focus on education is the key moving forward. “I have always been an advocate for change through the power of education. I’ll be fighting to ensure that Education remains a cornerstone of Labor Party policy” Dib said. For Dib, you could say that building bridges within the community is his specialty.

Jihad Dib MP announces $300,000 of community grants

Jihad Dib MP garners support for our local SES Unit

Since joining the frontbench, Mr Dib has continued his efforts in helping the community, leading an official presentation of donations to the NSW SES Canterbury unit. A total of $5,000 was donated to the SES unit, with donations coming from Kimberly-Clark Professional, and from The Minister for Emergency Services, the Honourable David Elliot MP. Kimberly-Clark Professional Marketing Manager Mr Saxon Robinson, who was in attendance, praised Mr Dib and his work following the presentation. “We’re excited that Mr Jihad Dib introduced us to the SES and a great group of volunteers who embody community spirit and are very generous with their time and expertise,” said Saxon Robinson.

Punchbowl Train Station Access: encouraging progress but the campaign continues

Just last month Mr Dib held a morning tea in recognition of recipients of the 2015 Community Building Partnership Program. This program saw charities, sporting clubs, social groups, and environmental groups from within the Lakemba electorate receive grants amounting to a total of $300,000. “Being a part of this process was a strong reminder to me and to the selection panel of a number of important things, especially the diversity of community organisations, the ingenuity of these groups, the significance and impact of the not-for-profit sector and the absolute need to keep supporting these organisations.” Mr Dib said. The money given to these bodies will primarily be used to improve existing infrastructure within the community.

Mr Dib now looks to the future, and how he can greatly improve his electorate’s community in the years to come. In fact, on March 22, Mr Dib tabled a 500 signature petition to the NSW parliament requesting better access at Punchbowl train station, namely with the installation of lifts. Currently, Punchbowl train station is only reachable through climbing up and down flights of stairs, which is far from ideal for the disabled, the elderly, and families with prams. The proposed addition of lifts in the station will make the station far more accessible, and will allow these people to use the station, instead of traveling to nearby Bankstown station in order to commute. “having access to a train station is not a nice-to-have or a luxury – it is access to a reasonable way to get to a job, to a school, TAFE or university or to a medical facility.” Mr Dib said. “This is not a community where people can afford to simply jump in a taxi to go to another station that does have decent access.” Mr Dib has recently been in talks with representatives of the minister for transport, The Hon. Mr Andrew Constance MP, and is set to meet with him to formally speak on this issue in May. Until then, Mr Dib hopes that the petition for better accessibility at Punchbowl station will reach 10,000 signatures, in order to force a debate in the NSW parliament.

2016 COMMUNITY HERITAGE GRANTS NOW OPEN The National Library of Australia is calling for applications for the 2016 Community Heritage Grants (CHG). The grants of up to $15,000 are available to community groups around the country to help preserve and manage locally held, nationally significant cultural heritage collections of documents and objects for future generations. Eligible projects include significance assessments, preservation needs assessments, conservation activities and collection management. The National Library manages the Community Heritage Grants Program—which is funded by the Australian Government through the Department of Communication and the Arts—with the National Archives of Australia, the National Film and Sound Archive and the National Museum of Australia. The Director-General of the National Library of Australia, Ms Anne-Marie Schwirtlich, said the program, which began in 1994, had provided more than $5.7 million for a total of 1,192 projects around Australia— from cities to the remotest of regions. ‘We invite everyone from historical societies, museums, libraries, Indigenous groups, migrant community groups—everyone who believes they have a special collection in their local community, to apply for this year’s CHG,’ Ms Schwirtlich said. ‘Through these grants, you will receive expert guidance to assess the significance of such collections and financial help to carry out the work required to preserve and document them.’ First-time recipients are invited to Canberra to receive their grant and enhance their skills through the expertise of institutions like the National Library—and take that knowledge back to their communities. Applications, which should be submitted online at www.nla.gov. au/chg, close on Monday 9 May 2016. CHG Contact: Mary-Louise Weight, CHG Coordinator, 02 6262 1147 or mweight@nla.gov.au

Sounds of Light 2016:

Six city charity concert Zia Ahmad /AMUST The iconic Sounds of Light charity concert was organized this year in six cities of Australia and New Zealand from 25 February to 2 March 2016 attracting an audience of tens of thousands of people. This year the performing artists included the most popular Swedish singer Maher Zain, Macedonian/ Turkish vocalist Mesut Kurtis, young British artist Harris J, American singer/actor/comedian Omar Regan and Kuwaiti nasheed performer Humood Alkhuder. Sounds of Light is an annual mega event organised by Human Appeal International in Australia as well as in many countries in Europe in order to provide shariah compliant entertainment with the aim of raising funds for the orphans of the world. The professionally organized mega event in the past has been held in 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011 and 2014 in the major cities in Australia. It is the first time that it is additionally being held in Auckland, New Zealand in 2016. This event attracts mostly young people who identify themselves as Australian Muslims rather than as Lebanese, Egyptians, Indians or Indonesians, concerned about the global Ummah in general and trying

to help the orphans overseas. The Sydney event held on Saturday 27 February at the Sports Centre at Sydney Olympic Park had a near capacity attendance with all tickets sold out well in advance.

The entertainers set the night alight with their spectacular voices, humour and reminders of doing good. The heart felt messages struck a chord with the audience as they pledged and donated generously for the

orphans of the world. A Sydney girl, Rouwaidah suffering from stage 4 cancer had her wish come true when she met her hero Maher Zain personally backstage. The crowds loved the electric

atmosphere of entertainment, generosity, responsibility and compassion, all for a great charitable cause and all came out with smiles, satisfied minds and happy hearts.
