“Hello brother, welcome.” Rehana Bibi - Queensland rehanaqmt@gmail.com

The first thing heard by the alleged gunman as he entered the Al-Noor Mosque in Christchurch last Friday. The last thing said by Haji Daoud Nabi when welcoming the attacker. Then the shooting started. In that moment, the deep divide between tolerance and hate that now lingers around the world, boiled to the surface for all to see. And it is an ugly, troubling sight. 51 lives snuffed out. An endless number of family and friends left to forever try and figure out even the tiniest part of why? So many hopes, dreams and tales of life gone forever. Ages of the victims ranged from 77 to just 3. The gunman’s hail of bullets made no distinction. The slain were young, old, male, female, retirees, students, overseas visitors and refugees. There is something especially harrowing about the thought of Syrian refugees fleeing the raging insanity of violence in their home country, making their way to distant, tranquil New Zealand, only to then lose their life to another rage of insane violence. Khaled Mustafa fled Syria, for a safe haven in Christchurch, only to be slain while attending prayers at his mosque. Hamza Mustafa, his son, just 16, died with him. As is so often the way in times of extreme adversity, heroes emerge from pain and remind us of our shared humanity – no matter the odds. Abdul Aziz was at the Linwood mosque with his family when the gunman emerged for his second bloody assault. In the chaos of more shootings, Aziz managed to chase the gunman away and doing so, picked up a gun that he had dropped and hurl it at his fleeing vehicle. Aziz saved unknown lives with this selfless display. Other heroes were, sadly, not so lucky. Hussain al-Umari was killed trying to challenge the gunman. Husna Ara Parvin ushered women and children to safety and ran back to look for her wheelchair bound husband. She didn’t return. The shock of Christchurch quickly swept around the world. Condemnation was quick and, to Prime Minister Ardern’s credit, so too was action in New Zealand. A swift tightening of New Zealand’s gun laws is under way. Police in both New Zealand and Australia, where the alleged gunman hails from, are increasing their surveillance of extreme right-wing

individuals, particularly so online. Australia is extending its Safer Communities Fund to increase the security of religious venues. It is now more than obvious that white supremacy, and its online protégé the “alt-right” has become globalized violence. Whether that’s a church in Charleston, a synagogue in Pittsburgh or a mosque in Christchurch, the genie of extreme right wing-terror is now fully out of its bile-filled bottle and can potentially strike anywhere. Islamophobia has become normalized since 9/11 and the subsequent War on Terror. Muslims have become dehumanized in the eyes of some in the West and a significant number of politicians have shamefully played on that for their own political gains. He may have since backed away from it, but in 2017, Tony Abbott is on record as saying “Islamophobia has never killed anybody.” Only a few hours after the NZ attack, we had senator Anning issuing a statement blaming Muslims for the violence. Add to that, of course, Trump, and Wilders, and Pediga, and Hansen becomes very easy to see how we have arrived at a point in time where Muslim life is somehow deemed expendable.

How best do we then move forward in the face of this upsurge of extreme-right wing violence? Clearly, there are young individuals (predominantly men) who are being allowed to become radicalized by their peers, their communities, the online sites they visit and so on. These are exactly the same sort of elements that have previously been identified in the radicalization of young Muslim men. Just as the Muslim community has been told to address and combat radicalization in our communities, the same needs to be applied to the growing number of aggrieved, isolated and unheard young white men. Governments need to do more work with them, get involved, build a support and intervention framework to prevent potential future radicalization. Senator Anning went as far as to issue a statement only a few hours after the attack blaming Muslims for the violence.

Note: In a gesture of solidarity and respect to the victims, their families and Prime Minister Ardern, this article also declines to mention the gunman’s name.

“New Ze mourns wi Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern opened the Hagley Park vigil, held to mourn those who lost their lives in the Christchurch terror attack, with a short and poignant speech.Dressed in black and wearing a hijab, Ardern addressed the crowd of thousands.

“According to Muslim faith, the prophet Mohammed, sallallahu ‘alayhi wa sallam, said the believers, in their mutual kindness, compassion and sympathy are just like one body, When any part of the body suffers, the whole body feels pain”. “New Zealand mourns with you. We are one “. She Said.

Adern’s speech was followed by the Islamic call to prayers, the adhan. As the adhan rang out across Hagley Park, mourners at the sea of flowers outside the park bowed their heads. After the adhan, silence fell across New Zealand. People across the country observed the Muslim call to prayer. Thousands more listened in on radio or watched on television as the event was broadcast live. The prayer was followed by two minutes of silence. Imam of Al-Noor mosque, Gamal Fouda, thanked New Zealanders for their support. “This terrorist sought to tear our nation apart with an evil ideology. ... But, instead, we have shown that New Zealand is unbreakable,” the imam said. “We are broken-hearted but we are not broken. We are alive. We are together. We are determined to not let anyone divide us,” he added as the crowd erupted with applause. “

When People of Different Faiths Unite in Wake of Christchurch Terror Attack By Dr. Rawaa El Ayoubi Gebara Sydney

Says Prime Minster Jacinda Ardern

In a state which is known by its complete peacefulness and harmony, it is hard to believe that a terror attack would happen and take the lives of so many innocent people. New Zealand suffered its largest mass killing in history on March 15, 2019, fifty people have died. Listening to this sad and devastating news produces in me this sense of anxiety and trauma. Therefore, I try to avoid watching the news or listening to it. But how can one avoid the factual inundate of bad news? How can one avoid the reality that someone has the heart to shoot people praying in the House of God? How can one avoid reading the sad stories of the victims? How can one avoid confronting the reality of the tragedy of terrorism, violence and suffering that left behind grieved and distressed families? I am not going to analyse the intention of this heartless slaughterer behind the attack or examine the inescapable document written by him because it is very shocking and shameful. Rather, it is essential here to reflect on the consequences and the lesson that we can learn out of this tragedy. The fortunate reality is that people of different faiths unite in wake of this terror attack. I can say that this incident was really transformative and will probably result in more harmony and understanding between people of different faiths. I believe that sympathy, love and compassion are the secret ingredients to connect people together. I see a great leader with a wise and a beautiful heart full of compassion and love towards her people without any discrimination in the New Zealand Prime Minister Ms Jacinda Ardern, who conveyed a message of support and love on behalf of the entirety of New Zealand’s population to all the families of the victims. She said that the day of the terror attack is “one of New Zealand’s darkest days”. She also paid tribute to the victims at a local mosque after meeting with Muslim leaders promising her people that New Zealand is united and will always be united, and she flagged an immediate change to New Zealand’s gun laws. Thousands have gathered across

New Zealand to mourn the victims of Christchurch terror attack. Muslims and non-Muslims came together and showed love and support in their own ways. In some places, mourners erupted into emotional renditions of the Haka in order to pay love and respect at the funerals. In other places New Zealanders broke into songs to honour the victims. Also, makeshift tributes were laid outside mosques and large numbers turned up to vigils. And the saddest moments were today, Wednesday the 20th of March 2019, when hundreds of mourners gathered at a cemetery near the Linwood Islamic Centre in Christchurch-one of two places of worship targeted in the attacks that took place last Friday-witnessing the burial of the two victims (a father and his son), who were killed at Al-Noor mosque. The father came with his family as refugees from Syria, and he left behind a wife and a younger teenage son who was also injured in the attack and thus, he attended the funeral in a wheelchair. During the burial, he said to his father and brother: “I shouldn’t be standing in front of you, I should be lying beside you”. This family who fled from Syria to New Zealand trying to escape an air strike or bombardment attack in their own country, did not know that the lives of two members of their family will be taken because of the ideology of a right-wing extremist terrorist. Whatever the religion of this killer is, I believe that killing innocent people is a crime that has no faith. The outpouring interfaith solidarity showed us in the wake of this terrorist massacre that taking the soul of any human being is a crime and attacking any place of worship is an act of terror. So, whatever our faith, race or colour, we are all brothers and sisters in humanity. We should be against any form of hatred language or any extremist views which led to a climate of fear and therefore to an act of terrorism. Especially, if this hatred language is expressed by a politician or a media reporter, because they are considered role models for their people and they will leave behind a breeding ground for atrocities such as those that have occurred in Christchurch.

he massacre took place, and the impact was severe. But then Muslims around the world stood united with their brethren in New Zealand. Delegations from Australia poured in to Christchurch to show their solidarity. In response to the amount of blood shed, the brutality of the crime, the blatant and provocative racist statements made by extreme rightwing politicians in Australia in the wake of the crime; Australian and New Zealand citizens mimicked the human nature of sound; rejecting hybrid racism and alien ideas. Australia’s true identity helped shape a public opinion against racism, hatred and religious distinction. with Muslims in Australia, and reduced the voices of hatred and extremism. But what next? This positive atmosphere, which lit up the blood of the martyrs, alarmed the advocates of hatred and the traffickers of Islamophobia, and transferred them from the site of the attack to the site of defense. This is a good and positive sign, but it is not enough in a multicultural society. The voices of hate must be ashamed of public opinion when defending their frivolous ideas in a country of pluralism and citizenship. They must remain silent because they pose a real threat to Australia’s identity. In order to achieve this goal, a strong lobby must be established in cooperation with other segments

Can they unite on a unified vision and unify their demands for laws that criminalize Islamophobia and religious discrimination and present it to the government and the opposition? It’s not enough to scatter statements and positions here and there. A summit was organised by the Muslim community bringing organisations and institutes together to discuss the current affairs and future of the community. We expected the meeting to address the concerns about Islamophobia and religious discrimination and what will be done to ensure the safety of our community. No concrete action plan was discussed.

We’ve all been shocked by the terrorist attack in Christchurch, we’ve all been devastated by the terrible loss of life. Innocent worshippers in their mosque, at prayer. People at their most humble and vulnerable, gunned down in an act of hate-filled terror. This was an attack on the Muslim faith and it was an attack on all people of faith. Attacks like this are designed to scare us and divide us, to drive us apart. I want you to know we won’t let that happen. This is a time for all Australians to come together, to prove this act of evil doesn’t represent our country or our values. We are all lucky to live in a marvellous multicultural nation; our home has been enlarged and enriched by generations of migrants, from all around the world. People who have joined their stories to ours, who have worked hard, made sacrifices and helped grow our community. The best of Australian multiculturalism has always been about us finding common ground, bonding over our shared love of this country and our shared hope for the future. This is what we value, when we value multiculturalism: parents raising children, friends coming together, neighbours looking out for one another. People volunteering, caring, people putting in and giving back. Because what makes a good Australian is not measured by how your ancestors got here, or the number of generations they’ve been here. What makes a good Australian isn’t determined by the amount of money you have in your bank account or the postcode you live in. What makes a good Australian isn’t the god you worship or the person you love. What makes a good Australian is what is in your heart. What makes a good Australian is how you raise your children, whether you respect the laws of this country. What makes a good Australian is ‘kindness in another’s trouble and courage in your own’. This is the powerful truth of our national success. It’s a truth we need to hold on to and to assert, loudly and proudly, every time we hear someone trying to whip-up fear, or peddle hate speech. The lead-up to the terrible events in Christchurch shows that words matter, words can hurt, words can feed hatred and that hate can lead to something deadly. But amidst the sadness and grief and trauma of the past few days, we’ve been reminded that words can bring us together too. The Muslim community, in particular, has shown tremendous leadership in that regard. All of us must strive for that spirit now, for words – and deeds - of healing and hope and inclusion. In these testing times, Australians of all faiths and traditions must stand together.

Message from the President

In The Name of Allah, The Most Beneficent, The Most Merciful On behalf of the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils, Australian Muslims and the Australian People, we extend our prayers and thoughts to the victims, survivors, their families and all the people of New Zealand during this terrible time. The tragedy of last Friday was an act of terrorism committed against the most vulnerable – people who were in a place of worship. People who were concentrating on their relationship and devotion with our Creator. People for whom the last thing on their mind would have been the murderous intent of someone with so much hate in their heart that they could even consider the killing of so many innocent lives. It doesn’t matter if you are Muslim, Christian, Jewish or any other faith. It doesn’t matter if you are not even a person of faith at all. What matters is our shared humanity and our total rejection and opposition of such horrendous actions. Something we have seen beautifully represented by the people of New Zealand and your leadership. Australian and New Zealand have a long and close history. We often call ourselves cousins and joke about the rivalry between our nations on the sporting field and in other areas. But we are in fact brothers and sisters. This tragedy has cut deeply for all of us and we grieve with you and stand by you during this terrible time. Unfortunately, we have seen events such as this all too often across the globe and the way in which our leaders respond is extremely important. To the Hon Jacinda Ardern, Prime Minister of New Zealand, I say that you have been a role model for all world leaders. Your clear compassion, strength and commitment to unify your community in this tragic time makes you a person that we all proud of regardless of whether we are New Zealanders or not. You have shown unthinkable determination, unbelievable courage, unparalleled compassion and an unfailing care for all your people. We must stand together, united, against such atrocities. Indigenous people, migrants, refugees – it doesn’t matter – we all stand as one against the hatred and division that is growing across the globe. The increasing threat of White Supremacism is no different to any other form of extremism and needs to be stopped. The politics of fear, of using the marginalised and weakest amongst us for political gain must stop. The demonization of Muslims by people with the loudest voices and the biggest public platforms must stop. This tragedy is about 50 innocents who are no longer with us, it’s about the equal number of injured whose lives will change for ever, it’s about their families and friends and all those who survived but need to deal with the ongoing trauma of what happened. We are thinking of all of you. But it is also about the rest of us – what we do from here to stand up against this evil, how we bring our communities together rather than divide us. as well to enjoy the event. Congratulations to the winners in the other categories and we hope to have another positive result next year! The winning film will also be displayed at a special temporary exhibition in the Discovery Centre at the Immigration Museum on Sunday 24 March through to Sunday 31 March 2019.

You, Me, We are Victorian When we think of Victorians we think of different cultures, ethnic backgrounds and religions. This short video tells a story of friendship, acceptance and appreciation of Victorians’ unique attributes. Watch how our lower primary (Fnd-2) students go on a mission to discover what a ‘real Victorian looks like’. As they visit iconic locations in the State of Victoria, they realise through the interactions they have that Victoria is made of

individuals who are unique and precious. A true Victorian, is YOU, ME and US. Let’s celebrate this diversity, especially during Cultural Diversity Week March 16-24, and be proud of what we contribute to ‘what a Victorian looks like’. “Diversity is the one true thing we have in common, celebrate it every day“- Unity in diversity “When I see you through my eyes I know we are different, when I see you through my heart, I know we are the same”- Doe Zantamata Surat Al-Hujraat: O mankind, we have created you from a male and female and made you into races and tribes so that you may identify one another. Surely the noblest of you, in Allah’s sight, is the one who is most pious of you. Surely Allah is AllKnowing, All- Aware. (13)

I have never felt prouder to call myself an Australian Imam Dr Bekim Hasani

Albanian Australian Islamic Society

The last 10 days have been full of heartache and sadness for me after the massacre in Christchurch. It is devastating not only for the Muslim Community but also for everyone here in Australia and around the world who consider themselves to be normal citizens of humanity. Australia has welcomed me and is now my home, it is where my children were born and in the last ten days there have been many moments of unity that have made me feel really proud to call myself an Australian. On the same day as the massacre in Christchurch, we were about to pray Friday Prayer in mosque of the Albanian Australian Islamic Society (the oldest mosque in Melbourne). As the Imam and leader of the mosque it is my role to keep calm and inspire people. At that stage we didn’t know who had committed the crime or how many people were killed or injured but I could already see the grief and sorrow in the faces of the congregation in our mosque, a grief that is going to last a long time. I felt very humbled as the neighbors and the public started placing flowers at the front of the mosque. The beautiful messages form visitors and passers by sharing their grief with us and showing their support for their local Muslim community made me proud to be an Australian and part of this community.

Adam Bandt MP at Albanian Mosque Two days after the massacre in Christchurch, the Albanian Mosque along with other twenty Islamic societies in Victoria opened their doors for the third annual Islamic Council of Victoria Mosque Open Day. Our mosque received more than 1500 guests on the day including politicians, religious and community leaders, neighbors and public who came to support us and express their grief. As people mingled in the mosque from all spheres of life, I took the opportunity to perform an absentee funeral prayer for the victims of Christchurch. I watched the tears pour from people’s eyes and I thought to myself, wow what a blessing it is to live among such a amazing people in a country like Australia that allows you to practice your religion freely and encouraged you to embrace people from all cultures and religions.

ICV Vigil At the State Library On Monday March 18, the Islamic Council of Victoria organised a vigil for the victims of Christchurch and I was invited to open the event with a recitation of a passage from the Holy Quran. Standing in front of over 6000 thousand people was overwhelming. Each person was there for one purpose only; to support the Muslim Community and the New Zealand Community in their darkest moment of despair and sadness. I am devastated about what happened to our brothers and sisters in Christchurch, but in that moment on the beautiful steps of the State Library of Victoria, I had great faith in humanity and the strong message that WE ARE ONE and we are all Aussies and we are together. I have never felt prouder to call myself an Australian. On Tuesday March 19, I was among religious leaders invited to represent the Muslim Community in the Victorian Parliament where the Premier moved the condolence motion for the victims in New Zealand. As I sat in the Parliament, I was humbled by the messages

AL WASAT 98 ¿ Rajab 1440 ¿ March 2019 ‫ هـ ¿ آذار‬1440 ‫ ¿ رجب‬98 ‫الوسط‬

Natalie Suleyman MP from many members of Parliament supporting the Muslim Community and promising the wider Australian community that they will take action against Islamophobia and bigotry. That was the first time for me to see all the MPs supporting the Victorian Muslim Community and it made me feel proud of my country Australia. This tragedy has also forced the media to reevaluate how it reports on terrorist events. On this occasion, the media supported our Muslim brothers and sisters in their grief, and without prejudice reported on the loss and sadness

we were all feeling. The media allowed people from the Muslim community to share their messages and allowed the Australian public to better understand that Islam and the Muslim people are, by and large, a peaceful and respectful people. It was a shift in the story being told by the media about Islam that made me feel really proud to live in this country. I hope that following this tragic event religious leaders of every faith in Australia including Muslim religious leaders and including me, do more to educate our congregations about the fundamental importance of valuing the right to live in peace and harmony and the right of each person to practice their religion without interference. We each have a very important responsibility to work towards making Australia a better and more tolerant place. I will also work hard to ensure that the Muslim Community, will remember all the support that has been received from everyone and in return support other communities in their times of sadness and joy, when they need it.

Labor promises fairer fees for money transfers

S

ending money overseas to friends, family and business partners could soon be easier and cheaper if Australian voters put Bill Shorten in the Lodge. Labor has pledged that if elected, remittance providers will have to disclose the full cost of international transfers prior to the transaction taking place. Shadow Minister for Competition

Andrew Leigh said the changes would bring Australia into line with comparison rates for car loans, mortgages and credit cards. “All too often, banks will tell their customers the flat dollar amount, but won’t fess up to how much they’re making from the exchange rate,” he said. “Full fee transparency would mean customers are told the all-inclusive cost of sending money overseas

upfront. Like mortgage comparison rates, full fee transparency would make it easier for customers to find the best deal.” Dr Leigh said that a Labor Government would also take steps to ensure banks and other remittance providers were following the rules, to stop people being forced to take measures such as transporting large amounts of cash in person. According to the World Bank, Australia is the fourth most expensive G20 country to send remittances from. For every $1000 money transfer, Australians pay $23 more than the Americans, $9 more than the British, and $4 more than the Canadians. One study into the issue found that a person who tries to send $1000 from Australia to a developing country will lose $77 in transaction fees and exchange rate spreads. CHOICE’s Head of Campaigns and Policy Sarah Agar said that transparently advertised fees for remittances are essential to helping consumers navigate this market

Shadow Minister for Competition

confidently. “When you purchase any other product, you should know upfront exactly how much it will cost, and whether another provider is offering a better deal,” she said. “International remittances should be treated no differently.”

Greens Leader Visit to Granville Friday Congregation

Leader of the Australian Greens Dr Richard Di Natale spoke during Friday prayers at Granville Community Centre on March 1st, at the invitation of the Mufti of Australia Dr Ibrahim Abu Mohamed. “We are a country of many different cultures, many different faiths, people from right around the world who have come to Australia to make it their home. We are a better country, a stronger country because of the contributions of people like your community, and we thank you for what you have done,” Dr Di Natale said during his remarks. “We acknowledge the contributions that the Muslim community has made to Australia, not just now but from the time Australia was founded. From the Makassans trading

accept it. It’s why when Pauline Hanson came into the senate and expressed their hateful fear, we turned our back on her and we stood in solidarity with the Muslim community.” “We have a lot in common, the notion of humility, the notion that we must protect the environment, the world around us because it sustains us, the notion of giving people less fortunate than us, we stand with you, we thank you for the contributions you’ve made and once again, let me acknowledge the wonderful work of Dr Ibrahim and all of you here today.” Grand Mufti of Australia Dr Ibrahim Abu Mohamed gave the sermon at the Granville Community Centre immediately before Senator Di Natale’s speech.

in northern Australia with our indigenous people, from the Afghan Cameleers who helped build the interior of this country to the new generations of Australians who have chosen to make Australia their home. “When people like Peter Dutton stand up and say that bringing Lebanese people to Australia was a mistake, he’s not just attacking Lebanese Muslims, he’s attacking all of us. He’s attacking me and my family because we’re one people, together doing what we can to make this a better country.” “When Pauline Hanson and other Senators stand up and disrespect Muslims, they’re disrespecting all of us. They’re making it harder for all of us, they’re making it harder for the young girl, young boy on their way to school, they’re making their lives harder and we will not

“Contributing and participating in the voting process is critical for anyone who claims a right to citizenship to a country. Voting acts as a means of upholding one’s rights and responsibilities to the country in which they are a resident and citizen,” said Dr Ibrahim. “Ignoring or refusing to vote serves nothing other than it demonstrates one’s absence and lack of desire to voice their presence and contributions to a country. “It is essential for anyone who has been granted the right to vote by their country of citizenship to utilise this right since it will serve in their best interests and the best interests of future generations to come. Voting is not only a social duty but also a personal obligation as well,” Dr Ibrahim said.

This is how you do it Tariq A. Al-Maeena Saudi Gazette Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern of New Zealand has shown the world how to react to a crisis and galvanize her nation. Following the Christchurch mosque attacks, she took charge and steered her country into taking humane action that has left many other world leaders looking pathetically inadequate. To elaborate on her efforts, Muslims

-‪ Entire population mourned genuinely. ‬‬‬‬ ‪- Called it a terrorist attack when the attacker was white, while media in other nations described the criminal as a “poor little lost boy”. ‬‬‬‬ ‪- Raised more than $10 million in days following the attack for the families affected. ‬‬‬‬ - All funeral costs were undertaken by the government of New Zealand. - Any person caught spreading hate news or promoting and spreading the video clip of the attack would be jailed for up to 14 years. - Passed a law to ban semi-

She hugged Muslims and genuinely

The gesture was in special recognition of the work healthcare staff undertake during these times of crisis. “On behalf of the Muslim community of the Gold Coast, I would like to thank everybody in this beautiful city for their outstanding support and for standing with us in these though times,” Imam Mohamed Ali said. ”Dear Prime Minister …”:

An Open Letter to

Jacinda Ardern

I imagine !

Dear Prime Minister Ardern, I am a 13-year-old Muslim girl from Australia and I would like to publicly share my appreciation with you. I belong to the generation that was born after 11 September 2001. I have never really contemplated how dark the anti-Muslim and anti-immigrant language is that permeates Australian society, because it is all I have ever known. I guess I’ve become used to hearing political leaders use that same language. But then, after seeing the way you have responded to the terrorist attack in Christchurch, I realised that I now know what the role of a leader truly is. So I want to thank you on behalf of the Muslim community in this country for all that you’ve done since Friday. The way you have expressed support and genuine empathy for the Muslim community, and your care for the people of New Zealand as a whole, have been magnificent to see. And I wanted you to know how much it means to me. Today I watched a video of you talking to the students at Cashmere High School regarding the terrorist attack. You showed such strength and kindness, and it made me wish I could experience the same thing in Australia. In my high school, not a single teacher or figure of authority even mentioned the attacks. They didn’t acknowledge that a white supremacist murdered 50 innocent Muslim men, women and children in a usually peaceful place of worship. They didn’t offer support or reach out to the Muslim girls in my school or even provide counselling services for grief and support.

Fatima Chawk, 12 Year Old

Yosra Elrifai, 13 Year Old

I imagine,

This world to have equal rights Without any fights

I imagine,

People not to feel scared, But to feel cared,

In a country that is so similar to New Zealand, and yet also so different, can you imagine the comfort that my Muslim friends and I felt, knowing there was one leader in a neighbouring country that was on our side? My friends and I are Muslim; we were all born in Australian and it is the only place we have ever known. But this has been the first time we have ever felt like we were part of the fabric of a community, and it breaks my heart that this feeling of belonging has come at the cost of 50 lives. If only more politicians had the courage to stand up to injustices and knew when to stop playing political games with the lives of people who depend on them.

Our hearts and souls Remain with the people who were killed by trolls

Your leadership has brought the world together. By supporting the New Zealand community, no matter what their religion, you have shown what a great leader you are - not just in the good times, but when the times are as dark as can be. I cannot imagine any other political leader doing what you have done. I think that you deserve the Nobel Peace Prize! Many world leaders could learn a lot from the way you have held your nation together and comforted those who are grieving.

For them to rest in peace, They wished to proceed, To get good deeds, Instead ended up dead,

I’m sure you will remain Prime Minister of New Zealand for a long time. But if not, do you think maybe you could move to Australia and become our Prime Minister? That would be a dream come true. Thank you again for all that you have done. From, an Australian-Muslim girl who now knows what real leadership looks like,

NZ women show solidarity

with Muslim women

On Friday 22nd March, women in New Zealand wore headscarves to show solidarity with the Muslim community The “Headscarf for Harmony” movement was started by Thaya Ashman, a doctor in Auckland.Participants shared photos of themselves wearing the scarves on social media. The gesture was a sign of solidarity with the Muslim community. Jordan Reid from Tauranga

Samantha Hayes news anchor wore a black headscarf on air.

“ After a week of joining this country in grieving the tragedy of last Friday, I felt I didn’t have the words to articulate my devastation and to express my support for the Muslim Community. When I came across #headscarvesforharmony, I realized that I could use my craft to silently create a symbol of unity and support for all NZ women.”

Larissa (Lala) McCarthy, a mother of 5, from Taupo “I chose to wear a headscarf in solidarity with my Muslim sisters and brothers on March 22 as I believe

“I’m wearing a headscarf today for her, and for the families and friends of those killed in Christchurch a week ago.”

in living my life through love and compassion. I believe in teaching my children to do the right thing, even when it is hard sometimes. I chose to feel and see only love. I felt proud yet humbled wearing it.”

Courtney Linwood from Oamaru “I chose to wear a headscarf to show solidarity and support for all Muslim women in our country that are too scared to wear their hijab in public out of fear of being identified as Muslim. I don’t want them to feel scared. This is their home and they are us, just normal people trying to live their life. We are all human and all deserve to be treated as equals.”

Sophie Nicole from Auckland “For me, wearing a hijab was a way of showing unity, solidarity, tolerance and kindness. I’m proud to stand along side Muslim men and women as part of one race, the

human race, as no one should feel afraid to be themselves. If by me wearing a hijab helped one person feel less afraid and helps them be free to express their culture or to be themselves then it is worth it 1000 times over. “

A cup of honor and Coffee pot with the flavor of humanity

Fawaz chawk Coffee beans come with different types and flavors. However the coffee, Bethany Morrow and her colleagues made and served, was the best coffee as it had the flavor of humanity and was sweetened with love and consolation. Bethany probably does not know that the habit in some countries is to serve coffee when someone dies but she certainly knows how to spread smiles

and hope to the faces and hearts of those who lost their loved ones. Bethany even showed us how love, compassion, humanity and brotherhood can all fit into a small cup of coffee This coffee served for free for everyone by Bethany and her colleagues with beautiful souls infront of the Christchurch emergency response unit is more for the funeral of the global conscience rather than the for the funeral of the innocent souls lost. For the past three years the Islamic Council of Victoria (ICV) has been running the state-wide Victorian Mosque Open Day, supported by the State Government and the Victorian Multicultural Commission - and this year the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils (AFIC). The ICV approached Mosques across Victoria, asking them to open their doors and hearts to the public of all beliefs to strengthen community spirit, build better relationships with neighbours and breakdown misconceptions about Islam. Helping the wider Victorian public to look beyond the negative reports they are faced with through the media, helping combat Islamophobia and hate speech, through kindness and hospitality. Some came in and just wanted to embrace the Muslim community in silence shedding tears, others gave flowers, heartfelt letters of support - the amount of apologies heard, could not be counted. Visitors removed their shoes, toured our Mosques, said Assalamu Alaikum, tried on our hijabs, prayed with us in their own way. It was a taste of Utopia.

This year’s Mosque Open Day which saw the participation of some 21 Mosques from Morwell to Dandenong to Deer Park through to Geelong and the CBD as well as many more areas, coincided with Cultural Diversity Week and Harmony Day. Sadly it also coincided with the tragic events we saw unfold last Friday. Where 50, and counting, Muslims were killed in an evil attack by a terrorist during Jumu’ah prayers in Christchurch. It was so close to home – as many Muslims attend these prayers every Friday with their families and children. Thousands of Victorian, attended Mosques in solidarity with our tragic loss. Men, women, children, newborns, the elderly, politicians and community leaders - people from all walks of life.

Geelong Mosque had 2000 visitors enter their doors, others lost count. “What happened in Christchurch is not Australian, this does not represent us, nobody deserves this, we are one” These were the words which echoed across the day by visitors.

“It was a privilege to attend the Geelong Mosque Open Day. The Islamic Society of Geelong opened its doors and welcomed the community. I have no doubt the many hundreds of people who attended came in solidarity and to express their horror of the shocking events in New Zealand. It made me feel proud of the Geelong community to see so many visit the Mosque to show they care”. Christine Couzens MP on her facebook page

At ICV City Mosque, ICV President Mohamed Mohideen said, “The love and support shown to us as Muslims has helped us in the healing process. We thank each and every one of you who made the time to come and visit us all yesterday, offering your love and comfort.” “ Had a great morning at the Meadow Heights mosque as part of the 2019 Victorian Mosque Open Day organised by the ICV - Islamic Council of Victoria. It was wonderful to take part in celebrating the caring and sharing culture of Calwell’s Muslim community” Maria Vamvakinou MP on her facebook page

“That which unites us is far more powerful than that which divides us. Many cultures - one humanity. I had the pleasure of meeting Sithy (Board mbr) and Mohammed, the Imam of Monash Mosque, who opened the doors for Victorian Mosque Open Day” Nina Taylor MP on her facebook page

“Thank you to the Imam, President and other leaders of the Sunshine Mosque for inviting me to attend a prayer service and dua last night. It was a powerful demonstration of solidarity in the face of the incomprehensible acts of recent days. Thank you also to the local New Zealand community who attended in large numbers and, after the prayer service, performed a poem, a hymn and a haka. This was our community at its best in response to the worst of circumstances. Daniel Mulino Labor’s candidate for Fraser on his facebook page

ICMGMeadow Heights Mosque had people standing outside silently with signs “You pray inside. I’ll stand here and keep you safe.”

“Great to see so many families stopping by Virgin Mary Mosque today in support of our Islamic Community and brothers and sisters in New Zealand” Sarah Connolly MP on her facebook page

Some Mosques, which weren’t originally participating even felt compelled to open their doors to respond in gratitude for all the support from their neighbours. Maori groups visited and performed the Haka at Mosques to show their compassion. The outpour of empathy, unity and love was very overwhelming.

“A wonderful Open Mosque Day at Virgin Mary Mosque today. It was heartwarming to see the coming together of so many in support of our local Muslim and NZ communities. The flowers and tributes were beautiful and all who spoke called for respect, understanding and inclusion”. Joanne Ryan MP on her facebook page

“ An honour to visit as part of Mosque Open Day - here with Imam Dr Bekim Hasani, who lead us in pray for Christchurch, and Luke Creasey, ALP candidate for Melbourne. This event has been in my diary for weeks, but it had special meaning today and the mosque was full of people coming to pay respects, leave flowers, pray or simply learn. The warmth and generosity of the Albanian Islamic community moved me to tears and the Imam said the doors of the mosque are always open to all residents of Yarra no matter their faith.” Mayor Danae Bosler - Yarra City Council on her facebook page AL WASAT 98 ¿ Rajab 1440 ¿ March 2019 ‫ هـ ¿ آذار‬1440 ‫ ¿ رجب‬98 ‫الوسط‬

“As Premier of Queensland, many of the most inspiring moments come from our great challenges. I was so proud to stand with thousands of Queenslanders today - Queenslanders of the Muslim faith, of New Zealand heritage, and Queenslanders who just love our state. This is what I said: This is a time we come together. No matter where we live in Queensland we are in everything together.

We show it in natural disasters. We will show it now. Racism, extremism and ignorance have no place here. Our hearts go out to Christchurch. This is Queensland and we stand together. Always.” #StandTogether March 17 Annastacia Palaszczuk MP Premier of Queensland, on her facebook page

“Today I visited the Lutwyche Mosque Open Day, where many many other people from around Brisbane had also come to pay their respects, and to say that we’re all as one. Stand in solidarity with Muslim community “Today the hearts of New Zealanders feel a pain too hard to imagine. Across the globe we grieve with them. A sadness beyond expression. We’re sad because we hoped this day would not dawn in our corner of the world. Sad because part of us feared it might. We’ve seen - in the most shocking way imaginable - that terrorism is not about who you pray to. It’s not about race or religion or dress. It’s not about how you look on the outside. The hate that drove this evil must be confronted. We can never ignore or tolerate hate - regardless of what corner it comes from. Stop demonising people for political gain. Call it hate speech, instead of just

calling it free speech. And never let vilification be claimed to be a byproduct of democracy. We know the monumental effort it will take to end hatred like this. That work will likely never end. But we must continue to push back against hate. Because no one should feel that pain New Zealanders are enduring today’. Ed Husic MP on his facebook page, March 16

“Today along with my party, our heartfelt thoughts go out to the Muslim community of Barton. Yesterday’s senseless terror attack on innocent people going about their own business in their place of worship is a shocking and unnecessary attack on people and our very way of life. This cowardly attack on innocent worshippers of the Muslim faith has no place in our society, and my thoughts go out to the Muslim community and the greater Christchurch community in these

most of terrible and shocking times. To the Muslim and New Zealand community of Barton, please know that I stand with you today in condemning this cowardly attack on your brothers and sisters in Christchurch. Our society should have zero tolerance for such attacks on people of all faiths and unite together in condemning these attacks.

“The terrorist wanted to break us but he didn’t succeed. Our reaction? One of love and compassion People of all faiths, backgrounds and colours have, shared services, prayed, reflected, cried, hugged, lit candles and marched the streets ...always together. There will come a time for the anger, for the questions about how we got here, for the blame, for ignoring the rising tide of hatred...but today, let’s think of all that is good..... our best Australia. When hate reared it’s ugly head, we stood for humanity. We are one! To my family and friends in NZ stay strong for one another” Jihad Dib MP on his facebook page

“There is blood on the hands of politicians who incite hate. To me, there is a clear link between their politics of hate and this sickening, senseless violence in Christchurch. Muslims have been targeted during Friday prayers. This is not an isolated event with mysterious causes. This is not random. This is the consequence of the Islamophobic and racist hate that has been normalised and legitimised by some politicians and media. We know Muslims are directly targeted by politicians day after day including those on the far-right like Pauline Hanson and Fraser Anning. We know Muslims are demonised constantly. We know we are hated by some. Attending Friday prayers is a family ritual for millions of Muslims. My heart breaks for everyone who has lost family and friends today, and Muslims around the world who worry for their safety each day. Let’s call this what it is. A planned terrorist attack targeting Muslims.”.March 16 Senator Mehreen Faruqi on her facebook page, March 18

TOUGH NEW LAWS TO PROTECT AUSTRALIANS FROM LIVE-STREAMING OF VIOLENT CRIMES The Morrison Government will legislate tough new laws to prevent the weaponising of social media platforms and to protect Australians from the live-streaming of violent crimes, such as the Christchurch terror attack. Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the new legislation would be introduced into Parliament next week as part of the action the Government was taking to keep Australians safe in the wake of the Christchurch terrorist attacks. “Big social media companies have a responsibility to take every possible

action to ensure their technology products are not exploited by murderous terrorists,” the Prime Minister said. “It should not just be a matter of just doing the right thing. It should be the law. And that is what my Government will be doing next week to force social media companies to get their act together and work with law enforcement and intelligence agencies to defuse the threat their technologies can present to the safety of Australians. “This is about keeping Australians safe by forcing social media companies to step up and do what

the community expects of them to stop terrorists and criminals spreading their hate.” “A new task force bringing Government and social media companies together will also ensure we are all working together to deny terrorists the opportunity to use social media as part of their hatred and violence.” Minister for Communications, Mitch Fifield said, “we will not allow social media platforms to be weaponised by terrorists and violent extremists who seek to harm and kill and nor would we allow a situation that a young Australian child could log

onto social media and watch a mass murder take place.” The Attorney-General said the amendments would be modelled on existing offences in the Criminal Code which require platforms to notify police if their service is being used to access child pornography. “Mainstream media that broadcast such material would be putting their licence at risk and there is no reason why social media platforms should be treated any differently,” the Attorney-General said. The e-Safety Commissioner will be given the power to issue notices that bring this type of material to the attention of the social media companies. As soon as they receive a notice, they will be deemed to be aware of the material, meaning the clock starts ticking for the platform to remove the material or face extremely serious criminal penalties. “The Bill will not impact the ability of news media to report on events which are in the public interest,” Minister Fifield said. “The focus of this Bill is to put responsibility back on the social media giants to prevent their platforms being co-opted by terrorists, criminals and violent extremists,” the Attorney-General said.

FUNDING FOR COMMUNITY SAFETY Following the terrible terrorist attack in New Zealand the Australian government is extending its Safer Communities Fund. Funding will be boosted for the upcoming round of grants from the fund for religious organisations to increase security at their premises. Fifty five million dollars will now be available in round 4 and grants will be prioritised for religious schools, places of religious worship and religious assembly. Grants ranging from $50,000 to $1.5 million will provide for safety enhancements such as CCTV cameras, lighting, fencing, bollards, alarms, security systems and public address systems. Funding is available over three years for security infrastructure and projects and applications for funding can be lodged. To date around 340 grants have been made. Potential applicants should start preparing applications now. Further details are available on the Australian Government’s Safer Communities Fund website at: https://www.business.gov. au/…/safer-communities-fund-round-4.

NEW AUSTRALIAN EXPORT

White Supremacist Terror Bilal Cleland

dunk1689@gmail.com

Effective and Compassionate Political Leadership in New Zealand The Prime Minister of New Zealand, addressing Parliament on March 19, gave good advice regarding the Australian terrorist who murdered 50 members of the Friday Prayer congregation in Christchurch: The white supremacists and their fellow travellers have been reeling from the response to their hero’s crimes.

Trying to Hide One commentator drew attention to the sudden disappearance of white supremacist and antiimmigrant material from the internet. “These range from promoters to media outlets to political parties, though few are drawing attention to what they have removed or publicly stating their motivations. However others which have long-harboured or propagated Islamophobic views have opted to leave them on their platforms. [The Spinoff NZ March 19] NZ Green Party Co-Leader Marama Davidson says the wrong people have been under surveillance and the Muslim community aren’t being protected from white supremacists. “What it says is that there is a clear bias, a systemic bias that distracts away from the very real dangers of white supremacists all around the world.”[Te Ao - Maori News March 17] The same criticism can be levelled at Australia where Islamism is the focus and the white supremacists seem to operate under the radar.

The Murdoch Media The bias of the Murdoch media is so blatant that it is being lampooned. One of the most telling cartoons of First Dog on the Moon has in one panel the statement: “Who do they think they are, suggesting that just because Murdoch papers in one year alone published almost 3000 anti-Muslim stories including 180 front-pages, that our organisation bears any responsibility for the febrile fertile atmosphere of hatred

“He sought many things from his act of terror, but one was notoriety. And that is why you will never hear me mention his name. He is a terrorist. He is a criminal. He is an extremist. But he will, when I speak, be nameless.

and violence?” [First Dog on the Moon The Guardian March 18 2019] One young Muslim journalist who found the level of bias at Sky News too toxic to tolerate, resigned on the Saturday following the killings.. Like Waleed Aly in his famous video taken from Channel 10’s The Project, she was not shocked at what happened in Christchurch. Why? “This is because for the past three years, I’ve worked at Sky News. More specifically, Sky News “after dark” — when the rolling coverage of the day’s news makes way for conservative commentators to share the “opinions you can’t ignore”. As a young Muslim woman, I had many crises of conscience working here, but the events of Friday snapped me out of the endless cycle of justifying my job to myself. On Saturday, I finally sent in my letter of resignation. [ABC News March 19] Way back in 2016 Michael Brull in New Matilda exposed the nature of incitement occurring on that TV channel. The little-watched Bolt Report, famous for its intolerance of all things left of Jenghis Khan, carried opinions like this: “ Let me stress that. Islam is a “warlike religion”, which “licenses our destruction”, and “demands an end to our most cherished liberties”. Bolt then outlines what he thinks is a natural – and understandable – response: “civil war.” “And if our politicians will not speak frankly and protect us from Islam, watch out for a civil war. A frightened public will not put up with this for much longer and will defend themselves. Here, yes, that ugly day has not dawned and let us pray it never does. But in France, God knows how soon non-Muslim vigilantes

AL WASAT 98 ¿ Rajab 1440 ¿ March 2019 ‫ هـ ¿ آذار‬1440 ‫ ¿ رجب‬98 ‫الوسط‬

will themselves take up arms. Who could blame them, after the murderous attacks by Islamists on a Jewish kindergarten, on a satirical magazine that mocked Islam, on a kosher supermarket, on a policeman and his wife at home and, last year, on Paris in a full-on military assault that killed 130 people. (Emphasis added).” Who could blame them? It’s just self-defence. [New Matilda July 18 2016] Andrew Bolt’s response to Christchurch has been stunning. He has condemned Anning’s attitude but on his Monday night program, he bemoaned “the use that some people are making of this tragedy to make even more division, to silence their ideological opponents, to spread even more hatred and fear.” He even appears to have discovered “hate speech.” According to Bolt, everyone is now being accused of complicity in this atrocity – anyone who questioned immigration, or who argued for free speech, or had criticised Islamist extremism. He for one would not fall for such division. “This reaction is dangerous, it is in itself hate speech likely to lead to violence or I fear no speech at all.” [The Guardian March 19]

And to others I implore you: speak the names of those who were lost, rather than name of the man who took them. He may have sought notoriety, but we in New Zealand will give him nothing. Not even his name.”

Rather the law has to apply online, to social media and all other digital platforms, just as it applies in the non-digital world.” [The Australian March 16] Most Muslims are well aware of Mr Sheridan’s attitude to Islam and multiculturalism. “How I lost faith in multiculturalism.” [The Australian April 2, 2011] describes how his views changed due to “real world experience.” “In particular it is four realworld experiences: watching the debate unfold about the illegal immigrants who come to Australia by boat; a month in Europe researching and writing about immigration issues; 30 years reporting on political Islam in Southeast Asia and the Middle East; and, above all, living for nearly 15 years next door to Lakemba in Sydney’s southwest, the most Muslim suburb in Australia.” He really disliked Islam:”... the only people who don’t think there is a problem with Islam are those who live on some other planet. The reputation of Islam in the West is not poor because of prejudiced Western Islamophobia, still less because Western governments conduct some kind of anti-Islamic propaganda.”

We are all Muslims today

What do the White Supremacists and their Fellow Travellers Fear?

A real turnaround was demonstrated by Greg Sheridan who under the heading “In face of racist terror, we are all Muslims today;” cast blame on an unfettered internet: “Here is one of the central challenges of our time and our civilisation — we must bring the internet under the rule of law. This is not an infringement of free speech.

“Where am I going with this? Well I see that Sheridan has a book out this week titled God is Good for You: A defence of Christianity in troubled times. The book shares the faith of fourteen current and former politicians.“ “Our Western civilisation is beset on two sides. First by Godless left activists infiltrating all of our

institutions. Second by Islam. Of course, these two Anti-Western forces have allied. But in the end fighting under Allah’s banner will have more conviction to it than fighting under the red and rainbow flags. Expect Islamists to prevail when they turn on each other. Our civilisation is under threat. Christianity can save it. Our leaders are Christian yet keep quiet, or relatively quiet, about it. That makes no sense to me.” [Peter Smith “God, Truth and Cultural Survival” Quadrant. July 22 2018] Discussion over the rejection by ANU of the Ramsay Centre, the beloved of Abbott and John Howard, brought out some of the fears of the extreme right. “How to account for the hysterical discussion? Why would an otherwise level-headed commentator like Greg Sheridan commence his column in The Australian with the extraordinary statement that the ANU’s decision “is a pivotal moment in modern Australian history”? Do members of the rightwing commentariat think that Western countries are succumbing to a poisonous cocktail of multiculturalism, Muslim immigration, political correctness and cultural Marxism that dilutes the white population and brainwashes young people at school and university? It seems that, much like Steve Bannon, they do. We are on the precipice of disaster, they seem to believe. [Western Civilization and Conservative Hysteria June 7 2018 ABC Religion and Ethics Report] that dilutes the white population and brainwashes young people at school and university? Politicians who have used Islamophobia and fear of immigration and refugees as a political tool since Howard’s Tampa Crisis and 9/11 are also now backing away from their populist posturing. Morrison has threatened defamation proceedings against The Project’s Waleed Aly for his explanation of why he was not shocked at the Christchurch massacre, given the anti-Muslim rhetoric of our leading politicians for some years. Waleed alluded to the Shadow Cabinet meeting in 2011 when an unnamed politician tried to get anti-Muslim policies into the upcoming election campaign. We all know who that was and Morrison has denied it but memories of the meeting differ. It depends on who one believes. [The New Daily, March 18] One sign of change was the rapid decision to remove the visa previously granted to Milo Yiannopoulos, the spreader of Islamophobic hate, for his Australian tour. It had been first refused, then granted under pressure from certain commentators and right wing politicians but then removed again. Even Tony Abbott has backtracked on his controversial 2017 claim that “Islamophobia hasn’t killed anyone”. “Mr Abbott made the remark in June 2017 in the immediate aftermath of the London Bridge terror attack, arguing officials were too scared of offending Muslims to debate Islamic terrorism properly.” [The Age. March 18] Then Home Affairs Minister Peter Dutton, who revealed deep concern for white South African farmers facing genocide from the blacks, regret ted that we ever let in Lebanese migrants come here in the 1970s, and remarked that Melburnians feared going out at night because of African gangs, lined up against Anning. Deeply offended by accusations from the Greens that he had played a role in the Christchurch terrorist attack by fuelling anti-Islamic sentiment in Australia, he denounced them “ as bad as Fraser Anning.” [SMH 18 March] Susie Latham has an

excellent article in The Age March 18, “Calling out those who created a toxic environment for Muslims.” It has a very informative summary of the more poisonous outbursts of Islamophobia from our right wing politicians, including Dutton, Abbott and Bernardi. The silence of some of these warriors of the New Crusades on the massacre in Christchurch is itself worthy of note. Their outspoken support for Cardinal Pell can perhaps be understood by reference to his role in the development of the right wing political agenda. NITV News on SBS March 16 an article headed “Pell was more culture warrior than cleric, more politician than priest,” by Michael Carey, maintains: “For 30 years, Howard and Pell were brothers in arms driving Australia dangerously to the right. For many, Pell was more culture warrior than cleric, more politician than priest. John Howard, and others, recognised that.” In far off Norway, terrorist Anders Behring Breivik in his 1,500 word manifesto for a white supremacist new world order, called for a new European bloc, including North America and Australia and the creation of a revitalised Western culture which isolated Muslims, rejected multi-culturalism, constrained China and promoted a conservative, traditional role for women. Two prominent backers of that philosophy, according to Breivik, were John Howard and George Pell. Of Pell, Breivik said, “Luckily, not all Christian leaders are appeasers of Islam. One of the intelligent ones comes from Australia, a country that has been fairly resistant to Political Correctness. They have taken serious steps towards actually enforcing their own borders, despite the predictable outcries from various NGOs and antiracists, and Prime Minister John Howard has repeatedly proven to be one of the most sensible leaders in the Western world. George Cardinal Pell, Archbishop of Sydney, tells of how September 11 was a wakeup call for him personally.”

The Response of Australian Security Services to The Rise of White Suptemacy Our security services are apparently reluctant to call-out white supremacist movements for what they

are, a threat to democracy and to our multicultural community, In an interview with the Daily Telegraph the Head of ASIO a few years ago, “Duncan Lewis had the temerity to assert that Muslim baiting in Australia was overblown and dangerous and could make it harder for the various counter-terrorist agencies to do their work.” Sheridan of the Australian reacted predictably and claimed parliamentarians were outraged. Apparently this was limited to Abbott supporters, the Tasmanians, Eric Abetz and Andrew Nikolic, and the West Australian Dennis Jensen This interview was used to attack PM Turnbull. The Australian came out with the headline “PM warned on stifling Islam debate.” This was all reported by Mungo McCallum. [The Drum ABC December 22 2015] Politicians of the ruling coalition chose to ignore ASIO as the Islamophobic rhetoric continued for years. Then the Christchurch Massacre occurred. The Department of Home Affairs head, Mike Pezzullo, speaking to a Senate estimates hearing on Friday, March 22, said the department had “rededicated itself to standing resolutely against the extremist ideology of white supremacy and its followers.” However as Amy Remeikis reported in The Guardian, his comments on white supremacy come a week after he delivered a major speech on “seven gathering storms” for national security, where white supremacy was not even mentioned. This new dedication is questionable, given that Sydney Morning Herald and the Age reported that one of Fraser Anning’s staffers was on unpaid leave from Home Affairs and had apparently written the “Final Solution” speech. The individual denies it but that remains to be established. [Guardian March 22] It seems our security services still have a way to go before

they can offer security to the targets of the white supremacists.

International Responses to the Massacre On the day of the massacre Turkish presidential spokesman Ibrahim Kalın said: “This cowardly act shows how anti-Muslim rhetoric and hatred leads to murderous acts. The world must break its silence over Islamophobic hatred….. We have seen many times that Islamophobic rhetoric against Islam and Muslims has turned into a perverse and murderous ideology.” The Government of Turkey sent a high level delegation to New Zealand to express its solidarity with the people of that nation. Including the Vice President Fuat Oftay and Foreign Minister Mevlut Cavusoglu, it arrived on the Sunday 17 March. President Erdogan on March 18 blasted European countries for being silent in the face of last week’s terror attacks. The next day he told an election rally, referring to the terrorist: “You will pay for this. If New Zealand doesn’t do so, one way or another we will make you pay,” Turkey has already said it will carefully vet visitors from Australia and New Zealand wishing to commemorate Anzac Day. As their intelligence service probably already has their details, white supremacists should stay away. Terrorists get hard treatment there. Pakistan lost 9 citizens in the massacre and Mian Naeem Rashid who was martyred trying to tackle the white supremacist terrorist, is to be awarded a national honour for his bravery, according to the foreign minister, Shah Mehmood Qureshi. Indonesian President Joko Widoyo, head of the world’s largest Muslim country, said “we strongly condemn these kinds of violent acts.” Indonesia has also expressed disgust at the statements

by Anning. “The Indonesian foreign ministry has summoned the Australian ambassador in Jakarta to express strong condemnation of Australian senator Fraser’s Anning’s controversial response to the Christchurch massacre. [Guardian March 18] Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad said he hoped New Zealand “will arrest these terrorists and do the necessary under the law of the country.” From Riyadh, Dr. Yousef Al-Othaimeen, secretarygeneral of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), praised King Salman of Saudi Arabia for his “strong and firm” response to Friday’s terrorist attack on two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand, in which 50 people were killed. He also called on the international community to confront terrorism and hate speech in all forms against religion and the values of coexistence. France, Germany, Norway, Spain, The UK, Russia, China, Canada and Italy all expressed their condolences as did the Queen. Bangladesh’s Foreign Ministry has advised Bangladeshi nationals living in Australia to be vigilant at all times in the wake of the Christchurch terror attacks. Jim Wallis, President of Sojourners, drew attention to the role of the United States and Donald Trump in giving voice to the ideology of white supremacy and nationalism, as the New Zealand killer explicitly praised Trump and cited him as an influence. [sojo.net] Yahya Bosat, a columnist in the Turkish Daily Sabah wrote of the poisonous hatred of those who share the Australian terrorist’s views. “Like the mass murderer, they feed off the rise of racism in Europe and the words of politicians that try to ride that wave.” His conclusion is deeply worrying: “Everything that happened in recent years is terribly reminiscent of the lead-up to World War II. The global economy is contracting. Most recently, the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD) revised its growth forecasts to indicate that the world was heading towards recession.” [Daily Sabah March 18]

GIFT OF KINDNESS

The Best Dads Might Not Look Like One By Jamilah Samian

www.coolmumsuperdad.com

B

ooks are aplenty to lend ideas to fathers on how to be a good Dad. Articles abound with tips on the same. I found myself browsing through yet another such article the other day. And as I did, I heard a little voice inside me responding to what I read. Here’s how it went.

Tips on how to be an awesome father: • First: Eat regularly together with your family. Not my father. • Second: Read to your children often. My father never did that. • Third: Discipline with firmness tempered with love. Nah. That’s my mother’s job, unless she thought things needed to be reported to Dad, if us kids got too much out of hand. • Fourth: Spend time with your child. Not my father. By the time he got home each night, my father would be too tired to do anything, except get ready for prayer and bed. Father did the only job he could do, driving a bus that earned him a little income, but enough to see us through. • Fifth: Share household chores with your child’s mother. How could my father, when he was absent practically all day? • Sixth: Respect your child’s mother. Oh, yes. That’s my father.

My father showed his respect towards his wife by totally trusting her. Finances, discipline, school matters, washing diapers, attending family functions, you name it, mother did them all. Mum would report to Dad anything that was worth reporting at night, particularly if something needed urgent attention. One cool thing about Dad – he never complained if mother got herself something sweet, like clothes or jewelry. Never. I am sure it was because Mum never overspent; she knew our family’s spending limits well. I admired the way they worked things out together as parents; they knew what each had to do. They had their share of disagreements, but deep inside, us kids knew they adored each other. The thing is, Dad was away at work from dawn to dusk. Every day. If he didn’t, there would not be food on the table, no doctor visit if someone fell ill, the school fees would not be paid, AL WASAT 98 ¿ Rajab 1440 ¿ March 2019 ‫ هـ ¿ آذار‬1440 ‫ ¿ رجب‬98 ‫الوسط‬

us kids could not have attended school. Simple as that. But if you were to ask me and all my four siblings, none of us would say he was an absent father. Thinking back, I realised Mum was the key. She had a way of making sure we felt Dad’s presence. Mum had a habit of sneaking in references to Dad. In our daily conversations, Mum would say, “What would your father think?”, “Save some food for your father”, “Be sure you hang your father’s clothes well”, or, if she sees something delicious, “I better grab some for your father. He loves them.” Through my mother, I learned that my father was to be respected, loved, revered, even in his absence. I wrote this not just in memory of my late father, but for all the Dads that do not fit the stereotype of what it means to be a good Dad. The best Dad may not look like one, sound like one. We tend to put people into boxes, but there are exceptions to the rule. People are not stereotypes, mothers

and fathers are not stereotypes. There are fathers out there who do what they have to do, leading lives that are less than ideal as fathers, because they do not have a choice. It does not make them less of a father. Some of them may be absent for months at a time, it is hard for everyone – mother/ wife, father/husband and kids. But they make do, and something about them ensure that their children still think the world of them. The best fathers might not look like one, or sound like one.

450,000 JOBS

FOR VICTORIANS UNDER AN ANDREWS LABOR GOVERNMENT

V

ictoria’s economy continues to perform strongly – recording the highest annual jobs growth of all the states – and creating nearly half a million jobs for Victorians since the Andrews Labor Government was first elected. Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) data released today shows more than 136,000 people found a job in Victoria in the year to February – more than anywhere else in the nation – contributing nearly half of all the nation’s jobs growth for the year. Nationally, employment growth increased by 284,100 jobs during the same period. Since November 2014 when the Andrews Labor Government was first elected, Victoria has created a total of 450,000 jobs – more than 70 per cent of them full-time. That’s more jobs growth than anywhere in the nation during the same period. Victoria’s unemployment rate of 4.8 per cent also remains below the national average. Today’s ABS data also confirmed Victoria’s youth unemployment rate fell by 2.3

percentage points over the year to February – now at its lowest rate in almost 10 years. Victoria’s impressive employment results have more than kept pace with population growth – with employment growth above population growth in each of the past four financial years. “Our massive investment in the schools, transport and hospitals that Victorians need is not only helping future-proof our state, it’s boosting jobs as well.” “People continue to choose Victoria as their home, find a job in their local community and our state grows stronger as a result.” Treasurer Tim Pallas said. “Yet again, Victoria is showing the rest of the country how it’s done – big projects mean more jobs for Victorians.” “Since 2014 we’ve created 450,000 jobs – 70 per cent of them full time – more than anywhere else in the nation.” Minister for Jobs, Innovation and Trade Martin Pakula said.

A Dangerous New Form of Cyberbullying C

yberbullying is a very dangerous kind of bullying using internet or a mobile phone in order to harass, embarrass or hurt people. It is very dangerous because most of the time it is done in secret with the bully hiding behind his/her fake profile and keep sending anonymous hurtful messages. Also, it is hard for the person being bullied to escape it when technology has been used all the time.

Dr. Rawaa El Ayoubi Gebara Sydney

We witnessed before, the emerging of a perplexing range of games with newer elements of fun and entertainment directed to young people. For instance, the dangerous “Blue Whale Challenge” which involved teenagers-who are always curious to indulge in newer games in the intention of reducing stress or having fun-used a very unique way to play the game. It is neither an application nor internet-based game, but the users get a link through social media chat groups to enter this life-threatening challenge game. Each participant who enters this game has to end his/

her life in order to complete the game which plays on the depressed psychology of an isolated teenager based on the pretext of keeping the challenges confidential. It is important to mention here that no option was offered to quit the challenge even if the participant was unable to complete the challenge. This sort of threat to our children and teenagers appears again in different technique of other games: the “Momo challenge” which is a viral game reportedly pushes kids and teens to harm themselves and even to suicide: it is a popping up in the kids’ you tube videos. This viral game is using an evil-looking Manga-like character with distorted

AL WASAT 98 ¿ Rajab 1440 ¿ March 2019 ‫ هـ ¿ آذار‬1440 ‫ ¿ رجب‬98 ‫الوسط‬

Unfortunately, up to one in five young Australians have reported being cyberbullied. while there are many forms of cyberbullying, I believe that sneaking through games to attack children and teenagers is the most treacherous way of bullying and causing deliberate damage to families and therefore to the whole society.

bird-like features who is said to have supernatural powers to possess and kill children. It is been said that this character is based on a Japanese fright sculpture created by an animation company. The dangerous part about this viral game that it involves cyber predators in the guise of this evil character through applications such as WhatsApp and other social media platforms and instructing kids to do harm to themselves or even to suicide. It begins when teens are asked to add a new contact via WhatsApp. This user claims to be “Momo” and sends an evil photo of a woman with bulging eyes and bird-like features. According to multiple reports, then, the cyber predators behind the evil photo ask the child victim some series of risky and dangerous dares to complete which directly drive the child to potentially deadly acts. If this child does not follow the instruction, the “Momo” character allegedly

threatens him/her with ferocity and violence. Also, it has been reported that the “Momo” character popping up in YouTube videos aimed at children specifically. As we can see clearly from the above information that cyberbullying can be a crime and can manipulate the child mind in a way that leave him/her with the feeling that there is no one out there can support them. The most important thing to do now is talking to our children and show them the evil character “Momo” so they will be aware when they see it and, therefore do not follow its instructions, and to block it straight away. Also, it is crucial to reassure them that we are always there to help so they can be comfortable to report problematic messages or unusual popping YouTube videos to us. It is a good idea to monitor what our kids are watching and what they are doing online and try to be close to our children in a way to know their favourite apps,

games and devices. Schools also, should educate the students about this challenge and explain to them the serious act behind it and open up a conversation between teachers and students about the violent and deadly acts lead by this viral game. Overall it is clear to see that we have a huge responsibility to always be alert about any danger which can harm our kids especially when this danger is coming from using technology which should be used to enhance the cognitive development of children as well as adults instead of harming them. All the games which tend to harm children or adults should be seen as illegal and unethical, and therefore should be banned. Since these games have severe effects on our kids and teenagers, government should be involved to take the necessary preventive measures to educate people about them and to stop them. We need to work together to keep all our kids safe.

ISLAMIC MUSEUM CELEBRATES FIVE YEARS SINCE OPENING I

mages revealing the former water bottling facility on the site where the Islamic Museum of Australia now stands, and its transformation into an architecturally designed centre of learning are now on display at the Museum to celebrate five years since opening. Islamic Museum of Australia CEO, Mr Ali Fahour, said he is excited to share and re-live memories from the Museum’s early days with the community. “The Museum opened on 28 February 2014, there was a heightened sense of anticipation in the community after years of fundraising to make it happen. Looking through our archived photos brought back great memories, especially for those who have been involved from the beginning,” said Mr Fahour. The Museum was established as a space that both portrays the beauty of Islam and imperatively, offers educational experiences that deepen the visitor’s understanding of Islam. “The idea was conceived post 11 September 2001, negative sentiment towards Muslims and Islam was on the rise. A comfortable learning space that, among other things, offered the opportunity to dispel myths about Islam was more than necessary.” Five years on, the Museum’s Director of Education, Ms Sherene Hassan said the Museum continues to meet these objectives. “The most rewarding aspect of the museum is to witness firsthand the transformation of students after a visit. Many look tentative and visibly uncomfortable when they first enter the museum. By the end of their visit, they are relaxed and smiling with a newfound

respect for Islam and Muslims,” said Ms Hassan. Caulfield Grammar teacher, Ms Ellen Langmead agrees with this sentiment, “The Islamic Museum of Australia is one of the most valuable venues our students visit as a part of the Year 9 Programme. The space combines the beauty of a gallery, the information of a museum and the education of an immersive classroom. Most crucially, the staff offer students a chance to interact, ask questions and break down misconceptions. Without a doubt, all students leave this venue as more informed young people who are infused with a new confidence about how the world and all of its people fit together.” Mr Fahour said the education sector is important to the Museum, “Since opening, the Museum has welcomed over 50,000 guests, around two-thirds of whom have been school students. We have been well supported by educators who see the value in including a visit to the Islamic Museum in their teaching plans. Our curriculum linked activities ensures the Museum experience is relevant to learning areas across primary and secondary levels.” “We are pleased the Museum continues to be high on the list not just for educators but the community at large. It’s a great privilege to share the beauty of Islam with our guests.” The Islamic Museum of Australia is located in Thornbury, in Melbourne’s north. It is the only Islamic museum in the country and provides educational and cross-cultural experiences for all ages. The Museum is open 10am – 4pm, Monday to Saturday.

Maurice Blackburn appoints first Muslim woman partner This article was published in the Financial Review Newspaper on 9/1/19

xactly one century after the law firm Maurice Blackburn was founded, the firm has promoted its first ever Muslim woman to the role of partner. Azmeena Hussain, a Sri LankanVictorian Muslim lawyer born in Melbourne, said law was the only career she had ever considered. Ms Hussain joined the Melbourneheadquartered Maurice Blackburn at 22 after a partner at a different firm said in a job interview she’d be “bad for business” and clients “would not trust her advice” because she wore hijab. Ten years on, Ms Hussain’s mentor and supervisor burst into her office with another partner to scream: “I don’t know what to say or how to say this but... you’re a principal!” Ms Hussain called her Mum

Azmeena Hussain’s legal ambition was ignited at the tender age of three.

immediately with the exciting news. “Growing up, my mum had a difficult journey accessing legal representation when she had to wade through the aftermath of

a divorce. I witnessed first-hand how difficult it can be to navigate our legal system without expert guidance,” said Ms Hussain. “I also vividly remember the ultimate relief my mother experienced when she met people who were able to assist her legally, and put her mind at ease. Later on in life, I found out these people were lawyers.” Ms Hussain’s older brother is the well-known Australian comedian Nazeem Hussain, who ditched his own law degree and now appears in Netflix stand-up appearances and TV show Orange is the New Brown. Breaking down the reality and absurdity of social malaises like racism and Islamophobia in Australian society is a recurring theme of his work. Ms Hussain’s promotion comes off the back of a decent year for Australian law firms in terms of getting women to upper management roles. Many law firms scrambled across

2018 to try and correct the gender status quo that has predominated partnership levels for decades. Herbert Smith Freehills appointed eight women and no men to its partnership in the first half of 2018, 7 out of 11 new partners at King & Wood Mallesons in the first half of 2018 were women, and 7 of 10 new Australian Ashurst partners were women. But cultural and racial diversity at the partnership level remains a work in progress. Final year law student and Sydney University Law Society’s first ethnocultural officer Ferdous Bahar described Ms Hussain’s appointment as “absolutely fantastic”. “I’m a brown, visibly Muslim woman starting out my legal career, so it’s obviously profoundly encouraging to see a brown, visibly Muslim woman like Azmeena killing the game,” she said. “It’s just empowering.”

Maher Art

from Tripoli to Sydney Rehana Bibi - Queensland As a kid Maher Hamami, a Lebanese-born calligrapher from Sydney, was always passionate about reading but one day after witnessing a calligrapher working on a store sign, he developed a real passion for calligraphy. For one hour the young Hamami observed the artist completing his work. He waited patiently for a chance to ask some questions.

I asked him about his calligraphy and he was kind enough to give me a direction of where to start,” Hamami said. “He introduced me to the calligraphy pens and a book called The Basics of Arabic Calligraphy.” From that moment on, Hamami spent all his spare time, learning everything he could about calligraphy. He also copied works of calligraphy art that he saw around the city. He used a pencil to outline the letters then filled them with colours. The turning point however was in year 10 when he saw a student in his class free styling with white chalk on the blackboard. Hamami was surprised and in awe to discover that someone could write live calligraphy. Omar, the student, wasn’t using a pencil to first outline the letters. The rest is history; the two became best friends and spent hours every day writing and exploring calligraphy in the city’s mosques, libraries and shop fronts. They even travelled to Syria to see calligraphy arts. Arabic calligraphy is strongly linked to the introduction of Islam in the 7th and 8th centuries. In the Islamic world, calligraphy is regarded as a noble art. In places like the Middle East it is also widely used for commercial purposes. Although traditional forms of Arabic calligraphy almost always quote chapters and excerpts from the Qur’an, its modern forms are much more universal. After few years and exactly in 1992, Omar and Hamami knew that it was time to take their “hobby” more seriously and the best way to do this was to learn from a real master. In Tripoli, Lebanon, the calligraphy master was none other than Ahmed Al Dahab. “I remember seeing him walking in the old city of Tripoli called el -Tal heading towards the historic cafe’ to spend the afternoon with his friends, Hamami said. “We approached him and introduce ourselves and showed him some samples of our arts. He invited us to

his office to learn the calligraphy the right way.” Al Dahab would write few letters for Hamami and his friend to practice at home. During practice they soon realised that professional calligraphy was not as easy as they had in mind. Some nights Hamami would cry disappointed that he wasn’t able to write calligraphy as well as his master. “We would practice with Master Al Dahab twice a week and I remember saving my daily pocket money to pay his fees which was worth nearly $2.50; back then, it was lot of money for a young kid like me. I learnt that patience and passion is the key to

learning anything, I certainly have patience, otherwise I would have quit long ago.” During the learning phase, it was quite difficult for Hamami to find books about calligraphy or information about where to study calligraphy. Without cell phones and at a time where internet was not accessible to everyone, Hamami decided to use a camera. He would photograph calligraphy styles that he saw around town and learn from the pictures. The other challenge was to find right tools; bamboo/pens and good ink was neither easy to source or affordable. Hamami recalls using pegs and wooden matches to write with and Betadine as ink. Quoting an old adage, he said that ‘necessity was the mother of invention.” Hamami preferred to learn from different calligraphers and so he would travel from one city to another searching for masters in calligraphy that could mentor him. “My advice to people who want to learn calligraphy; you need to be patient and you must have the passion for this art otherwise you will have no motivation to continue,” Hamami said. “I have noticed that the better ones becomes in mastering this art, the more one becomes attached to it.

It’s like magic full of enjoyment and love.” Hamami’s favorites artists are Sami and his student Nazif. Both lived in Turkey in the 19th to early 20th century and were considered the biggest masters in calligraphy. “In Lebanon I was impressed by a calligrapher called Adib Nashabe (1905 – 1989), his amazing calligraphy decorates the city of Tripoli. Unfortunately, I didn’t get the chance to meet him in person. Later in life, Hamami travelled and lived in UAE. He continued with calligraphy as a hobby and had the opportunity to participate in many exhibitions. In 2015, he moved to Australia with his family and settled in Sydney. This time he decided to pursue a career in calligraphy. Since then he has worked with Emirates Airline, Human Appeal, Commune, Mohammad bin Rashed Space Center, and many others. Hamami is often invited to events to perform as a Live artist, ie he writes calligraphy while the audience watches him. “I am amazed at how western people like my arts, they ask me to write their names and they are so happy to watch me writing their names; paying attention to every move. It’s a new experience for them and they are always fascinated.” Hamami sees the Arabic calligraphy as a blessing and a gift from Allah. “ As a calligrapher I always relate to Islam first and Arabic second.” “The love to write has always been exciting and it brings me happiness. It’s like running away from the material world, enriching your soul with a basic pen and drops of ink,” he said. “When I hold my pen and start writing, it’s like a gateway filled with love and passion; all I wish is for the time to stop so I can continue writing endlessly. “ https://www.facebook.com/ MaherArts1 https://www.instagram.com/ maherarts/

The Messenger of Allah (PBUH), said, “Allah said: Spend in charity, O son of Adam, and I will spend on you.”

By Princess Lakshman (Sister Iqra)

Welcome to my new self-care column, Finding You...stepping into your own miracle. Enrichment of life comes through self-reflection, followed by selftransformation into a better person, a more enlightened being, who responds to situations with absolute faith and submission to the flow of the Creator’s plans. Reflect upon your life. Ask yourself the real questions that will open your mind and let you enrich your life with spiritual abundance. Questions like, are you satisfied with how you are responding to circumstances? Are you

content with your behaviours? Are you in complete submission to your Creator? Are you a better individual today than you were yesterday? Life is temporary therefore all accumulated material objects are also temporary and meaningless. Do you appreciate and express gratitude to ALLAH rather than complain and compare your life with other peoples’ meaningless material possessions or social status? Do you understand that solutions to life’s challenges, such as marriage, family, workplace, national politics, and so on, come not from intimidation and retaliation but from respect and understanding and from a consistent daily practice of peace and kindness to self and others?

Relevance of religious pluralism in modern society through the lens of a revert muslim Princess Lakshman (Sister Iqra)

Call For Papers! The Centre of Islamic Thought and Education (CITE) invites you to submit a proposal to present at the AAISC4 2019 on the theme of social justice. For more information: https://unisa.edu.au/AAISC4 AL WASAT 98 ¿ Rajab 1440 ¿ March 2019 ‫ هـ ¿ آذار‬1440 ‫ ¿ رجب‬98 ‫الوسط‬

Religious pluralism in modern society may be a group thought, a collective paradigm adhering to the notion that there is a harmonious co-existence between religions and that there is not one consistent means of approaching truths about God but rather many. As a collective paradigm, it is ideal and even seems possible. But, when it comes to a person’s individual perception of another individual’s spiritual journey, religious pluralism seems to lose its relevance. The individual’s judgement of another individual’s spiritual journey overshadows all else. I embraced Islam seven years and was immediately ostracised by my modern, educated family. Religious pluralism in modern society should not have to be so challenging to practise. And yet it is, despite the

fact that we modern people have progressed intellectually quite rapidly over the last 100 years. So, why is it so hard for a modern parent of today to accept that their adult child needs to explore her own spiritual path? Is it because the modern society we live in is fear-rich and faith-poor? Is it because it’s gadget-rich and heartpoor? Is it because it’s tolerance-rich and understanding and acceptancepoor? Is it because it’s hate-rich and love-poor? Is it because it’s population-rich and humanity-poor? Or is it because it’s religion-rich and right-minded-perception-poor? In my own experience, I feel the most dangerous ideology is that of loyalty. One individual gangs up against another individual or group and demands loyalty from others to support her or his selfish agenda. Loyalty isn’t always righteous. And loyalty is never inclusive. The need of the hour is to recognise the individual and respect the individual. Live and let live.

Final Report of Royal Commission:

A Soft Landing on Banks he Commissioner Kenneth Hayne recently handed down the T final report of the Royal Commission into misconduct of banks and financial institutions. In this report, there was no gore for

shameful behaviour heard, no structural separation of the banks, no overhaul of the regulators and no head on the sticks. Yet, the over 950-page report made 76 recommendations with far reaching implications for the financial services industry and

Dr. AbulKhair Jalaluddin Mortgage Brokerage

In the $1.6 trillion mortgage broking market, banks and other lenders pay $2.4 billion a year to mortgage brokers as up-front commission for introducing new borrowers. Mortgage brokers represent over 20,000 businesses and they organise more than half of all new home loans. Commissioner Hayne recommended to (a) make borrowers rather than lenders pay up-front commission to the mortgage broker for their services, (b) ban lenders from paying trail commissions to mortgage brokers for new loans and (c) ask lenders to require mortgage brokers to act in the best interests of the intending borrower, not the lender/ bank providing the loan.

Superannuation Australia has a $2.8 trillion superannuation industry. Over 90 per cent Australians are covered by superannuation system and there are over 10 million unintended multiple superannuation accounts which are fee-drainers on these accounts. The report recommended that (a) a single default super fund for each employee. All multiple accounts would be stapled to a single default account, (b) advice fees would be banned to be deducted from MySuper accounts, (c) advice fees for non-MySuper accounts would be prohibited in most cases and (d) heavy handed selling of addon superannuation products to be abolished.

Financial Advice In 2018, the financial advice industry consisted of over 20,000 entities. It generated $4.7 billion of revenue

and made a profit of $1.6 billion. The total wage bill of this industry was $2.1 billion. The Hayne Commission recommended that (a) a new regulatory system for financial advisers be created, with all advisers required to be registered. A single regulatory body would oversee the system, (b) all banks be required to report “serious compliance concerns” about individual financial advisers to ASIC on a quarterly basis and (c) grandfathered provisions of conflicted remuneration in the Future of Financial Advice legislation should be repealed as soon as possible.

Insurance Insurance industry is made up of various segments such as general insurance (vehicle as well as home and content), health insurance and life insurance. This industry provides valuable protection for assets, health and lives of Australians. Behaviour of players in this industry has a high impact on the life-style of all Australian policy holders. To improve the performance of this sector, the Royal Commission has the following recommendations: (a) hheavy-handed selling of insurance products be banned, (b) funeral expense insurance policies be defined as a financial product, bringing it under the oversight of ASIC, (c) handling and settlement of insurance claims be defined as a financial service and (d) Impose a cap on the commission that can be paid to car sellers for add-on insurance products.

Agriculture Australia has a large agricultural sector which consists of grain, rice, fruit, outdoor & under cover vegetable, cattle, shearing, dairy, cotton, poultry, fishing, forestry, horse farming, sugar cane, turf growing and agricultural support services. In relation to agricultural sector, Mr. Hayne recommended to (a) establish a national scheme to mediate farm debts, (b) require banks not to charge default interest on loans secured by farm land in an area declared to be in drought or subject to other natural disasters, (c) have banks ensure managers of distressed farm loans are experienced agricultural bankers and

its clientele. It would improve commercial behaviour, customer service, lower fees, change corporate culture and enhance governance in the industry. The key recommendations will encompass the major segments of the financial services industry, including mortgage, superannuation, financial planning advice, insurance, agricultural finance as well as regulators for Australian banking and finance. (d) recognize that appointment of receivers on a farm loan is a remedy of last resort. Banking Regulators: ASIC and APRA The Royal Commission recommended to (a) retain ASIC and APRA but have them overseen by a new independent authority that would assess the two regulators to ensure they are carrying out their responsibilities, (b) have ASIC overhaul its approach to enforcement, with a focus on court action rather than infringement notices and (c) have ASIC continue its annual reporting of breaches of financial service regulations but in future name the companies rather than just the type of breach. The final report has referred 24 large companies to regulators (ASIC and

APRA) for possible criminal or civil action. These companies include Suncorp, ANZ, NAB, CommInsure, Allianz, AMP and ClearView. It also recommended the establishment of a Compensation Scheme of last resort for those unable to receive financial recompense from their institutions which would be funded by the financial services industry. The report is basically a recommendation to the executive government. Any changes in the industry will need to be implemented through government legislations. Hence, it doesn’t necessarily mean laws will be enacted exactly as the Royal Commission final report recommends.

Muslim Women’s

Business Showcase

Shaman Abed This Saturday saw the culmination of the Advancing Women in Business program where the graduates showcased their small businesses and business ideas. The Queensland Governments Advancing Women in Business initiative supports and encourages more women to start and grow their own business, and achieve positions of leadership. Women in business can access targeted support including programs, grants, mentoring and education. Utano Consulting successfully secured a grant to provides its training program for Muslim women who are small business owners. The program is hosted by the Islamic Womens Association of Queensland (IWAA), who provide cultural support and advice and also recruit the women for the program. Christine Makumbe, expert facilitator and the director of Utano consulting said that, “Utano consulting has designed a program to provide a culturally safe and supportive environment for women to conceive and develop new and existing business ideas. In its second iteration, the program is growing from strength to strength. It creates an environment that is supportive and empowering, developing our women into economic powerhouses that are advancing the social, cultural and economic advancement of Muslim women living in Australia.” The Small Business Expo on Saturday was a celebration that not only showcased women who are already in business, but also medical professionals who represented business ideas in the health care field, as well as progressive and capable business ideas by two of the

program’s youngest graduates. Year 10 student Alaia Akbar said that the “course made business seem fun; it was broken up into sections that made it easy to realise my business idea, and have it up and running and advertised by the showcase.” “Being a business owner is not as overwhelming as I thought.” Farah Akbar another young attendee said she hopes one day to own a food empire. “This course helped me understand basic budgeting and what profit and loss is. I have started a business already,” she said. Representing the Hon Shannon Fentimanon , Minister for Employment and Small Business, was Heidi Matherson, Manager - Advancing Women in Business Initiative Office for Small Business who congratulated staff and volunteers of IWAA as well as the Utano team in getting the program off the ground and successfully securing State government support for the program. The showcase was hosted by Dr Nora Amath of IWAA, on behalf of Christine Makumbe who was overseas but was able to participate online, the event was a huge success. Speaking to the dedication of all the attendees, Dr Amath was filled with praise. “Today was all about honouring the graduates of the Advancing Women in Business Expo 2019. For 8 weeks these women gathered every Saturday at the IWAA Hall to learn how to bring forth their ideas into a viable small business from program owner Christine. We couldn’t be more proud of the diverse businesses these women and girls have showcased today and can’t wait to see where the future takes them,” she said.
