Dear Brothers and Sisters

Assalamu Alaikum, Warahmatullahi Wabarakatuh

As the sacred month of Dhul Hijjah unfolds, our hearts are filled with gratitude and joy for the blessings bestowed upon us. This month holds immense significance in the Islamic calendar, marked by acts of worship, reflection, and sacrifice.

For Muslims around the world, the first ten days of Dhul Hijjah are a time of spiritual renewal and devotion. It is a time for hajj (Pilgrimage), time to deepen our connection with Allah, seek forgiveness, and perform acts of kindness and charity. These days culminate in the celebration of Eid Al-Adha, the Festival of Sacrifice (Qurban), where we commemorate the willingness of Prophet Ibrahim ( ) to sacrifice his son Isma'il ( ) as an act of obedience to Allah's command.

Eid Al-Adha is a time of joyous celebration, where families and communities come together to pray, share meals, and exchange gifts. It is a time to reaffirm our commitment to serving others and to remember those less fortunate than ourselves.

As we embark on this blessed month, let us embrace its teachings of compassion, sacrifice, and unity. Let us extend a helping hand to those in need, and strive to make a positive difference.

Along with the team of Human Appeal Australia, we extend our warmest wishes to the entire community for a blessed Dhul Hijjah and a joyous Eid Al-Adha. May this great occasion bring peace, prosperity, and happiness to all.

Your sincerely,

THE PASSING OF HAJJ SALAH SALMAN AM

A message from ICV Board Member Sarah Baarini

On Sunday, 12 May 2024 the community lost a pioneer and visionary. Our own president, Adel Salman said goodbye to his father.

Hajj Salah Salman (or Mr Salman as he was known by his colleagues and students, including myself) was a man whose contribution to our community can truly never be overstated or fathomed.

Ahead of his time, he helped shape Islamic education in Australia through Australia’s first Islamic School, the Australian International Academy (formerly known as King Khalid Islamic College). Many teachers, parents and students will recall Mr Salman’s emphasis on the curriculum and program of the school. It is that exact care and attention which has seen many students successfully graduate from multiple campuses to become leaders and contributors to the community.

As a young Muslim woman, I am particularly grateful for the leadership opportunities that were provided to me throughout my schooling, which equip me with the knowledge and skills to act and make decisions with priority to Islamic values and

principals.

Mr Salah’s hard work and dedication inspired many. He planted the seed which continues to grow and inspire other Muslim schools to be developed. Without the foundation that he set, many of us would not be the people we are today.

Hajj Salah contributed to the community immensely beyond the Academy in many ways. Many of his contributions his family are only now starting to uncover.

We pray that all of Hajj Salahs contributions to our community, both public and private act as Sadaqa Jariyah (ongoing charity) for him until the end of time. May Allah swt forgive his sins and grant him the highest level of Jannah (paradise).

The ICV and Muslim community extend our deepest condolences to Adel and his family and pray that Allah swt grants them all strength and patience during this incredibly difficult time.

Ina ililah wa ina ilayhi rajioon

To God we all belong and to him we shall return.

TRY

AS THEY MIGHT

DEDICATED TO ALL PALESTINIAN WHO ARE SUFFERING OPPRESSION AND FACING GENOCIDE

You and I, we feel the pain

You and I, we see the slain

You and I, we hear the fear but they don’t feel, see or hear!

Try as they might, to bury out of sight the truth will prevail, behind every veil

Try as they might,to crush and crumble the truth will be lifted, among the rubble.

Try as they might to banish and ploy the Palestinian will to stay they cannot slay. Through the whimper, through the wail the truth shall reach without fail.

Try as they might, to seal the light the truth will rise and hurt their eyes. They cannot dim, the Palestinian faith in Him when souls depart and drop at whim.

Try as they might to hush voices down the cries will get higher and never drown till they reach every city and every town.

Try as they might to win the fight they cannot shatter and thwart the plight. The truth will linger long and true through every mind of every hue, who knows what’s right from wrong,

the more that march, the more that throng.

Try as they might to hide their affair

One day they’ll cry and despair.

When their sins will be laid all bare, for Allah is here, there and everywhere.

HE knows it all even before we share.

HE is the just, the merciful, the most fair.

THE BUSINESS MOGUL, “FREEDOM FIGHTER”, COMMUNITY INSPIRATION HASH TAYEH:

Hash Tayeh made headlines when one of his burger outlets was torched in November last year. Then a death threat to make him a ‘shaheed’ (martyr) over social media prompted him to move his family into a

Hash and his family migrated to Australia when he was two years old. When he turned 10, his dad moved to Qatar.

“Being a bit of a troublemaker, my mum sent me to live with my dad in Qatar,” Tayeh said.

The rest of the family moved to Qatar a year later when Tayeh’s parents decided to enrol him into a military school called Qatar Leadership Academy, where he travelled around the world covering various military training while also keeping up with his education.

“The leadership academy I believe was a very integral part in my life’s journey. It taught us a lot about loyalty, integrity, respect and perseverance.”

After completing the course at 16, Tayeh told his parents that he wanted to visit his aunt in Australia then refused to leave, claiming he

safehouse.

In April this year, a Molotov cocktail was thrown at his family home, just below his two-year-old son’s bedroom.

The Palestinian-Australian has become

couldn’t find growth opportunities in Qatar back in 2007. He said that working at McDonalds in Australia provides formal certification and is a great steppingstone to future jobs.

“In Qatar, if you were to work that same job, you’d be looked down on as being from the lower class, it was a job that was frowned upon,” Tayeh said.

Tayeh started out working at Maccas in Box Hill while also being a ride operator at Luna Park. He started his first business at the age of 17, importing various electronics from China, Japan and France and then wholesaling it.

At 18, he became the first to import portable iPhone chargers and having a patent on it, sold it to a major phone retailer. He invested the large payout he received in a security company he owned and worked for. Two years later he bought a doughnut factory called Creamy

synonymous with spearheading rallies calling for ceasefire in Palestine... But the other side to Hash Tayeh is an incredible success story built all on his own.

Crunchy Doughnuts which he would wholesale to BP, Caltex, and Espresso Lane.

“It was a new industry for me. I loved throwing myself in the deep end, I still do. I genuinely believe that in life, if you’re not willing to risk a little bit, then you’ll never progress towards your ambition or your aspirations,” Tayeh said.

“Sometimes people are their worst enemies, and they continue to mull over things and overthink things to the point that they actually talk themselves out of an idea that could be great.”

Tayeh then heard about a group called Ezy Mart owned by Jordanian migrant Maher Magableh and flew to Sydney with a box of doughnuts hoping to land a contract with them. While the doughnuts didn’t quite sell, Tayeh formed a close bond with Magableh. In 2014 the pair opened their first Ezy Mart convenience store on Swanston Street in Melbourne.

“That was a huge decision for me because my funds were very limited, and the rent was 250,000 dollars a year for 50 square meters. A very small shop, high profile location, it was the make or break,” Tayeh said. It ended up being a resounding success despite objections from friends and family. Tayeh has since expanded Ezy Mart to 26 stores across Victoria, crediting Magableh for showing him the ropes at the onset.

“I believed in his [Magableh] brand ... but more than that I believed in myself. I don’t do anything halfway, I either go all in or I don’t do it at all,” Tayeh said.

A year after the launch of Ezy Mart on the premises of Footscray station, Tayeh opened Mipasto, Footscray’s first halal pizza shop. Soon after, Tayeh was offered the chance to open a Mipasto branch at Braybrook’s HomeCo Shopping Centre, which he accepted under the condition that he could also open his cafe and burger business at the Centre. This is where the much-celebrated Burgertory and Bean Lab were born.

“I didn’t actually create Burgertory. I’ve created Burgertory for what it is today, but Burgertory was actually a shop in Kew ... I offered the owner of Burgertory to partner with me in all three shops in Braybrook, and to license us as ‘Burgertory’ for that one shop,” he said.

Tayeh said the partnership turned sour when the owner stole from the business, took drugs with the staff among other concerns. He had no choice but to buy him out, ensuring the Kew branch was also closed leaving no trace of any ties between them.

Today, Tayeh’s three food brands have expanded into 35 stores across Victoria.

Burgertory being their most popular chain, earned them a cool 30 million in revenue during 2022, a saving grace after the Ezy Mart stores caused a hefty loss during covid.

“So many people doubted me, it fueled my hunger for success, and I wanted to prove them wrong. I wanted to prove myself right to me, that I knew I could do it, and it hasn’t been without its hurdles,” Tayeh said.

“I’m not willing to lose my integrity, my morals or my values for business. It’s important that you believe in yourself, and you believe in what you’re building.”

TAX CUTS ARE COMING!

WHAT DOES A TAX CUT MEAN FOR YOU?

People living and working in Australia are experiencing cost-of-living pressures. In response, the Australian Government has made changes to the individual income tax rates and thresholds.

Starting from 1 July 2024, every Australian taxpayer will receive a tax cut.

=Tax cuts reduce the amount of tax you pay. For many taxpayers, this means you will pay less tax each pay day and keep more of what you earn. Here is an example of how these tax cuts work. Priya is a registered nurse who lives in regional Australia. In the 2023–24 financial year, she earned $90,000 and paid $21,517 in income tax, including the 2 per cent Medicare levy. On the same salary, Priya will get an annual tax cut of $1,929 in 2024-25. This means she would pay $19,588 in income tax in the 2024–25 financial year. In Australia, the amount of income tax you pay depends on your annual taxable income. The higher your annual taxable income, the higher your tax liability is.

For many taxpayers, your tax cut will be reflected in your take-home pay each pay day. For others, you will receive it when your tax return is lodged and processed after the end of the 2024-25 financial year. However, tax cuts are not the same

as a tax refund. A tax refund is what you receive back from the ATO if you pay more tax than you need to when you submit your tax return.

You can find out how much your annual tax cut will be by using the tax cut calculator.

The tax cut calculator is available in 14 languages. All you need to do is visit the webpage and enter your annual taxable income to estimate your annual tax cut. The calculator only provides an estimated figure, and your actual tax outcome may be different from the calculated figure.

Visit www.taxcut.gov.au/languages to use the tax cut calculator, or to find more information about the tax cuts.

Your Qurban,

Worship & Hope

Do I have to sacrifice Qurban?

Qurban is a confirmed Sunnah and deemed obligatory upon all Muslims who are eligible. It was narrated from Abu Hurairah that the Messenger of Allah ( ) said; “Whoever can afford it, but does not offer a sacrifice, let him not come near our prayer place” (Ibn Majah).

Do I have to sacrifice the Qurban myself?

No. You may delegate it to an individual or organisation to sacrifice your Qurban on your behalf.

Prophet ( ) said “O

in the Islamic calendar is the month of sacrifice, during which worship and good deeds are amplified, particularly in the first ten days. This specific period is special, one which Allah ( ) the Almighty has “By the dawn; by the ten nights” (al-Fajr 89:1-2), and has been prescribed in the Sunnah of His Messenger ( ) many times. – which follows the ten days and translates to ‘Festival of - Muslims around the world sacrifice a Qurban (Udhiyah); usually a goat, sheep, cow or camel. This is to reflect on the submission of Prophet ) when he was commanded by Allah SWT to sacrifice his son, ), but was rewarded for his obedience with a ram sent down to

sacrifice is one of the great rituals of Islam, a confirmed Sunnah ) upon every household. It is a noble act of charity, one which strives to provide nourishment and relief to those in need.

Human Appeal Australia has dedicated all available avenues and resources to provide humanitarian relief to communities in need both local and overseas. A recent surge in mass starvation due to conflict overseas has brought upon unprecedented levels of food insecurity and an urgent need for nutritional aid and relief.

How many Qurbans should I do?

Each household must commit at least ONE Qurban, preferably on Eid al-Adha as mentioned in the hadith that the Prophet ( ) said: “The greatest of days before Allah is the Day of Sacrifice” (Sahih Abu Dawud). The head of a family may offer the sacrifice on behalf of other members in the house.

Which animals are considered Qurban?

Qurban animals are usually sheep, goats, cows or camels.

Currently, Human Appeal Australia offers this service exclusively in Gaza, Palestine. Please reach out to the Human Appeal office to provide beneficiary details, including name, contact number, city, and suburb.

Canned Qurban offers pre-cooked meat, conveniently prepared for immediate consumption. With its extended shelf life, it serves as a strategic solution for regions lacking refrigeration facilities, like refugee camps. This approach ensures that as many people as possible can benefit from and enjoy your Qurban sacrifice.

Hard Frozen Qurban is carefully prepared, cut into six pieces, individually wrapped, and shipped in separate cartons within refrigerated containers for freshness upon arrival.

In areas where feasible, livestock is procured and sacrificed locally, providing the poor and needy with fresh, locally sourced meat during Eid Al-Adha. Alternatively, in Australia and other regions, livestock is sacrificed beforehand, then distributed either canned or hard-frozen, depending on regional circumstances.

Qurban sacrificed locally in the following destinations:

Somalia, Ethiopia, Kenya, India, Sri Lanka & Nepal. $90

Sudan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Pakistan, Azad Kashmir, Indonesia, Eritrean Refugees, Togo & Burmese Refugees. $130

STIFLING DISCUSSION TO HIDE THE TRUTH

“The AIJAC Rambam program counts former prime ministers Malcolm Turnbull, as well as Junia Gillard Kevin Rudd and Tony Abbott among its alumni. All four were signatories to the recent letter from six ex-prime ministers condemning “hatred” spread by Hamas — Paul Keating is the only living former prime minister to not have signed the letter.”

John Lyons, author of Dateline Jerusalem, is head of Investigative Journalism at the ABC. He has forty years of experience in leadership positions including six years as Middle East correspondent for The Australian, based in Jerusalem. He has won many awards including the Graham Perkin Australian Journalist of the Year Award, UN awards and three Walkleys.

Despite this distinguished career, which should put him beyond reproach as a professional journalist, he begins his account with an outline of the vilification he suffered in response to his role in the ABC Four Corners program ‘Stone Cold Justice’ dealing with the treatment

A great deal of Israeli money and local Australian Israeli lobby effort is expended on influencing or rather suppressing, discussion of the IsraelPalestine issue in this country.

One tactic of this lobby was detailed in Crikey “Which Australian journalists and politicians have gone on trips to Israel and Palestine?” [ 3 November 2023]

“While the trips themselves remain a rather opaque element of the media landscape (indeed, the NSW JBD did not respond for comment), a number of the most powerful people in Australian media have been on tours of Israel, organised and often funded (at least in part) by the JBD or the Australia/Israel & Jewish Affairs Council (AIJAC). …The Israeli delegation to Australia also often organises trips that involve politicians, as does the Australia-Israel Chamber of Commerce, as well as the Australian Union of Jewish Students….”

of Palestinian children by Israeli military courts.

He said that he spent two months developing the program and three months defending it from attack by the lobby.

He writes, “Most journalists based in Jerusalem who report exactly what they see in front of them are trolled and abused.”

When he had reported on threats to Jewish schools a ‘prominent member of the Melbourne Jewish community’ had praised him for his integrity but when he wrote a story he disliked he became ‘a Goebbels’ and ‘a Hamas smelly used tampon.’

Lyons is convinced that these attacks are a deliberate tactic to discourage stories on Israel or Palestine.

When editor of the Sydney Morning Herald Lyons says he upset many powerful people including John Howard, Paul Keating and Kerry Packer but they were nothing compared to the fury of the proIsrael lobby, comprised of the Israeli Embassy, several formal lobby groups and several individuals associated

with them.

The result has been intense selfcensoring by Australian media.

“It’s the story of how the IsraeliPalestine issue is the single issu-the only issue- which the media will not cover with the rigour with which it covers every other issue.”

The Australian public is being denied knowledge of what is occurring in this conflict.

“Most Australians do not know that Palestinians have inferior civil rights in the West Banl to Israeli settlers living in the same territory.”

“Most Australians do not know that Palestinians live not just in fear of their Israeli army-particularly after dark-but also of Jewish settlers, who often attack them or their homes. Rarely are the settlers held to account by the army…”

“Most Australians would not know that there are streets in the West Bank where only Israelis can walk and roads on which only Israelis can drive.”

“Most Australians would not know

that the majority of Palestinians are not able to pray at Al-Aqsa Mosque, the third holiest Muslim site, and that thousands of Palestinian Christians cannot pray at the Holy Sepulchre, where Jesus is said to be buried, because the Israeli army will ot give them permits to visit Jerusalem.”

” Most Australians would not know that Israel controls all the water for the Palestinians and can turn it off-and sometimes does-if water supplies for the Israelis run low.”

“And most Australians would no know that in 2018, the Israeli Parliament passed the Nations State Law, which formally entrenches Jewish superiority over Israel’s Arab population.”

A major cause of conflict is obviously the occupation of Palestine, but the local lobby tries to deny the use of that very term.

“According to the UN, since 1967 at least 800,000 Palestinians including children, have been detained by Israel’s army and prosecuted in military courts. Between 500 and 1000 children, on average, are

16 OPINION AL WASAT 152 ¿ Dhul-Qi'dah 1445 ¿ May 2024 رايأ ¿ ـه 1445 ةدعقلا وذ ¿ 152 طسولا

detained each year.”

Israelis are not devoid of conscience and over 1000 former combat soldiers have formed ‘Breaking the Silence’ chronicling human rights abuses they have witnessed or committed against Palestinians. The occupation and the illegal settlements are hot issues, but the lobby fears their discussion.

Displaying Power

Lyons gives an example of the power of the Israeli lobby in the case of the 2017 visit to Australia of Netanyahu. He held a briefing for editors of major newspapers.

“During the briefing, he talked mostly about settlements-as a rightwinger, Netanyahu’s priority was to keep encouraging as many new settlements in the West Bank as possible, to create ‘Eretz Israel’‘Greater Israel’.

The aim is to make a Palestinian state unviable thus extending Israel, there being little interest in the two state solution.

“The power I witnessed was captured in an email at 11.54 am on 24 February. It was sent by Colin Rubenstein, the head of AIJAC, to the editors of The Australian. Under the heading ‘Netanyahu Settlements’, Rubenstein told the editors that ‘you can’t use what he [Netanyahu] said there’- he wanted to make sure that whatever Netanyahu said at the briefing remained a secret.”

Settlements are a sensitive issue because they are clearly illegal under Article 49 of the Fourth Geneva Convention.

800,000 Jewish settlers protected by the IDF and with their own vigilante security groups are in the West Bank.

Lyons said he found the Rubenstein email astounding and its suggestion that what might instead be reported on was “the attached fact sheet AIJAC has prepared on the subject.”

It is no surprise that, as he reports, not a word of Netanyahu’s briefing was published.

The editors abided by Rubenstein’s instruction.

“It’s worth pointing out that Rubenstein is not an elected official. The Executive Council of Australian Jewry is the elected representative body of Australian Jewry. AIJAC is a privately funded lobby group which over decades has been supported largely by Melbourne corporate lawyer Mark Leibler.”

No other lobby group could get away with such blatant interference. Neither the USA nor our own Prime Minister would get away with it, but this lobby does.

He points out that the AIJAC is aligned with the far right of Israeli politics.

Chris Mitchell former editor-inchief of Rupert Murdoch’s flagship described the AIJAC as having ‘undergone radicalisation’.

This radicalised lobby makes it difficult to report reality, especially with the exploitation of the term “anti-Semitism.

” As an illustration of the perils of reporting reality he mentions the case of Charles Enderlin who faced years of a defamation action from French-Jewish politicians over a report on Gaza.

He told Lyons “That so intimidated was the French media by the pro-Israel lobby that there was no way the Four Corners program I did ‘Stone Cold Justice’, would be broadcast in France.”

Exploitation of the term antiSemitism by the lobby is dangerous as it is now used for criticism of Israel but when real anti-Semitism arises it may be discounted as another ‘Cry Wolf’.

Australian Palestinian Journalist Targeted

Lyons also details the case of Palestinian Australian Jennine Khalik who was employed by The Australian for her Arabic ability and her knowledge of the large Arabic speaking community in NSW. Clive Matheson told her at the end of her first year that Israeli diplomats had come to see him and that “she had been on the agenda.”

When she wrote about the pressure being placed on the Victorian Education Department to remove

from its curriculum a play by Samah Sabawi, the attacks intensified. Then when she wrote about a Palestinian singer and refugee one of the paper’s sub-editors abused her, told her Palestine does not exist and demanded she remove the article.

She resigned.

The different treatment of journalists who had undertaken the junket to Israel was stark.

Journalists are under threat if they do not stick to the Israeli approved narrative and even Jewish leaders fear criticism, from the “the powers that be in the pro-Israel lobby.”

Australian Palestinian Writer Feared

An article Samah Sabawi, the Australian-Palestinian writer from Melbourne contributed to the ABC’s Religion and Ethics department, became a hot topic.

Scott Stephens from that department sent her article without her permission, to Bren Cahill of the Zionist Federation of Australia.

Then Stephens emailed Sabawi using words similar to those which Cahill used in criticism of the article Stephens published alongside hers.

An ABC inquiry into this was told that it was done to ‘pre-empt a certain lone of criticism’.

The ABC Audience and Consumer Affairs team found that Stephens

had breached the organisation’s principles. Sabawi was given an apology but that was about it.

On 9 September 2020 Stephens emailed a potential contributor saying that the Israel/Palestine issue was ‘too hot’ and ‘we’ve made an editorial decision to “go quiet” on the matter for a while.

That is how the lobby tries to stifle exposure of the actions of the Israeli regime to the Australian public.

Language

The lobby has even produced a special dictionary, the Global Language Dictionary, funded by The Israel Project, to guide politicians and journalists on what language to use to support illegal Jewish settlements in Palestine.

It attempts to sway the discussion in favour of settlements even portraying the idea of removing settlements as racist.

It is aimed at moderating language and issues to make it possible to appeal to the left.

The Series in the National Interest, produced by Monash University of which Dateline Jerusalem by John Lyons is the first, is under the commission of Louise Adler of impeccable professionalism.

The author is a prominent Australian Muslim scholar and activist.

WYNDHAM CITY COUNCIL MOVES TO ADDRESS EMERGENCY HOUSING NEEDS

Councillor Robert Szatkowski presented a motion on Tuesday 28 May, to address the critical need for emergency and crisis accommodation in the Wyndham Council, which was carried with majority support.

“There is a glaring shortage of such accommodation within Wyndham. This scarcity forces residents, who are already in distressing situations, to seek help outside our municipality,” Cr Szatkowski said.

He addressed the effectiveness of demountable homes, which is also known as modular or temporary housing as a solution to meet urgent accommodation needs. They can be deployed quickly, are costeffective, and can provide safe and secure temporary housing for those in crisis.

“Our municipality already has a comprehensive housing strategy in place, and there is an agreed position within this Council to consider using both land and capital-improved property for crisis housing,” Cr Szatkowski said.

He estimated at least $142 million worth of idle land within the municipality would be suitable for projects like the Tiny Homes Project and believes that Wyndham City Council has a significant opportunity to take meaningful action on this.

He recognised that organisations such as Orange Door provide essential services, including crisis and emergency accommodation, to those in urgent need but with a scarcity in accommodation, residents are forced to seek help outside of the municipality.

“Keeping families and individuals within their local area during times of crisis not only provides them with a sense of security but also ensures they remain connected to their support networks, schools, and local services.”

Cr Szatkowski said that while ongoing advocacy to the State Government must be maintained to acquire more publicly owned sites, the Council should also consider using their own resources.

“By investigating the feasibility of using Councilowned land for small demountable homes, we can make a direct and immediate impact,” he said.

Cr Szatkowski’s motion was carried with just Cr Gilligan and Cr Adele Hegedich voting against.

Wyndham council CEO Stephen Wall will present the report in three months according to Star Weekly.

ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE (AI) A TIME TO PONDER

“Jamilah, soon writers like you will become obsolete. AI will do all the writings that humanity need to digest.” So I was told when AI came into the picture. Will this ever become true? Only time will tell; your guess is as good as mine.

AI is a fascinating topic. Essentially, AI is all about making computers smart enough to do things that humans do, like learning, problem-solving, and understanding language. It’s like teaching machines to think and act like us. Some people seem to think that AI are becoming clones to humans. Is this true? I don’t think so.

As a writer, I can totally relate to how AI can be helpful. I have discovered that ChatGPT, an AI tool can assist with generating ideas, writing content, and even providing suggestions to make my writing better. ChatGPT has become a writing assistant to many writers. Pretty cool, right?

If you have Netflix at home, have you ever wondered how Netflix seems to know exactly what shows or movies you might like? Well, that’s because Netflix uses AI to analyse your viewing history and preferences to recommend personalised content. It’s like having your own virtual movie consultant.

Translation accuracy is an area where AI still faces challenges. While AI-based translation tools like Google Translate have improved over the years, they may struggle with idiomatic expressions, cultural nuances, and context-dependent

meanings, resulting in inaccurate or awkward translations.

From personal experience, though, AI does help to break communication barriers and enhance cultural understanding. Recently my son married a Japanese lady, and thanks to Google Translate, instead of hours of awkward silence, my husband and I could actually communicate rather effectively with her family members, who only spoke Japanese.

At the wedding reception in Japan, my new daughter-in-law’s parents and grandparents were curious about the recent Ramadan, which prompted them to ask about Islam and its practices. There you go, AI-driven language translation tools can bridge linguistic barriers and facilitate cross-cultural communication. By promoting cultural exchange and understanding, AI fosters empathy, tolerance, and appreciation for diverse perspectives, nurturing

wisdom and intercultural harmony. But, of course, with all this talk about AI, there are some concerns too. People worry about the potential impact on jobs – will AI automation lead to unemployment? There are also concerns about privacy and surveillance – how much do AI-powered systems know about us and who has access to that information?

Still, it’s not all doom and gloom. AI also brings some pretty cool benefits. Take precision farming, for example, like they do in the Netherlands with onions and potatoes. In 2017, my husband Ahmad and I went to the Netherlands where we sighted some farms. We saw how one single farmer could control a huge farm, just because AI was there. Armed with an iPad, the farmer could tell you how much each plant needed fertilisers, water and weed killer. AI helps farmers analyse data about soil conditions, weather patterns,

and crop health to optimize their farming practices. It’s all about using resources more efficiently and producing better crops while being kinder to the environment. So, back to the question I mentioned in the beginning, will AI ever make writers like me obsolete? At the moment, I’m happy to report, it’s a myth. In fact in some ways it does make my job easier. Still, AI is definitely something to think about. It’s got its pros and cons, just like anything else. But if we use it responsibly and ethically, AI has the potential to make our lives better in so many ways.

ADELAIDE MULTICULTURAL EID FESTIVAL CELEBRATE AND SHARE THE JOY OF EID

On 27 and 28 April 2024, the Eid Multicultural Festival brought colour to Adelaide to celebrate the end of the holy month of Ramadan.

The event was a fun family day out for all who attended. It featured live entertainment, children’s activities, amusement rides, public speakers, and mouth-watering international cuisines.

The Multicultural festival, attended by the Australian Government’s Smartraveller saw over 10,000 people visit the event.

For those inspired to travel overseas, whether for the first time, visiting family and friends or even revisiting a familiar destination, it’s important to visit Smartraveller to stay informed throughout your journey. It provides Australians with the necessary information to prepare, plan, and make informed choices for their overseas trips.

This includes advice on passports, visas, and travel insurance through to detailed travel advice on over 175 destinations. It also offers essential resources in multiple languages. All attendees are encouraged to make Smartraveller their first destination.

“After almost 5 years planning my trip back home to Morrocco to visit friends was daunting! But Smartraveller made it so much easier. The comprehensive guides and safety tips gave me confidence. It turned an overwhelming experience into a memorable and smooth journey,” remarked one festival goer.

Smartraveller’s travel tips for your future overseas adventures:

• Research and confirm visa and entry requirements for your destination. Reach out to the

relevant embassy or consulate for up-to-date information.

• Consult a doctor to learn about recommended vaccinations and health precautions for your destination. Check your medication’s legality and requirements.

• Don’t forget your travel insurance and make sure you read the fine print on your policy.

• Be aware of how dual nationality may affect your travel plans and consular services.

• Respect the laws of the country you’re visiting, as they may differ from those in Australia.

• Be mindful of the culture and places of significance in the regions you explore. This includes wearing appropriate clothing at places such as temples.

• Use social media responsibly, as posting sensitive content or comments on political issues can have consequences in some countries.

• If travelling alone, take extra precautions, such as using official transport and not disclosing that you’re travelling solo.

• Keep your bags and belongings close – don’t leave them on the ground or the back of a seat. This gives thieves a perfect opportunity to steal them.

• Leave a copy of your travel itinerary and insurance details with someone back in Australia.

• If you don’t already have a passport allow six weeks to renew or apply.

Travellers are encouraged to read the Consular Services Charter on Smartraveller https://www. smartraveller.gov.au/consularservices/consular-services-charter.

It’s a great resource for understanding what the Australian Government can and cannot do to assist travellers overseas.

Travellers should align their travel insurance decisions with the advice level of their destination and the activities they are doing.

NEW SCHOOL AND CYCLE PATHS FOR KOROROIT

The Allan Labor Government is investing in a suite of new infrastructure projects in Kororoit to ensure more families have access to essential services close to home.

Kororoit will benefit from more than $27 million worth of projects funded through the Growth Areas Infrastructure Contribution (GAIC) fund –supporting Victorian families in our fastest growing suburbs.

Projects in Kororoit include:

• $15 million for a new government school in Rockbank North

• $11 million for a new shared user path along Hopkins Road

• $1.3 million for active transport connections along Taylors Road

The Labor Government is investing a total of $400 million into 37 infrastructure projects across Cardinia, Casey, Hume, Melton, Mitchell, Whittlesea and Wyndham local government areas through the GAIC fund.

These projects complement the more than $685 million worth of initiatives already delivered across Melbourne’s

growth areas through the GAIC fund – including ambulance sites, parks, schools and public transport.

The GAIC fund is a oneoff contribution payable by landowners developing land that has been zoned for urban use and development in the Cardinia, Casey, Hume, Melton, Mitchell, Whittlesea and

DIGITAL DRIVER LICENCES HAVE ARRIVED

Victorians now have the option to carry their Driver Licence on their phone, as the Allan Labor Government begins its statewide roll out of the biggest digital card yet.

More than 4.5 million Victorians who are fully licenced drivers, motorcyclists, or heavy vehicle operators are the first eligible to download Digital Driver Licences.

Eligible Victorians will be able to access their Digital Driver Licences after setting up their profile via the myVicRoads and Service Victoria apps.

The rollout follows consultation across organisations that rely on photo identification including bars, restaurants, supermarkets, retailers, Victoria Police, and Australia Post.

In a successful trial last year, more than 15,000 Victorians in Ballarat accessed their digital licences via the myVicRoads and Service Victoria apps.

Digital Driver Licences have undergone rigorous

The licences can also be updated in real-time if there are changes to licence conditions or personal information like home addresses.

Learners and probationary licence holders will be able to access their digital licence by 2025.

“Our Digital Driver Licences will make it easier for Victorians when they go about their dayto-day lives – whether that’s driving around, renting a car, collecting a parcel, or visiting a licensed venue.”Minister for Roads and Road Safety Melissa Horne said.

“Victorians have been asking us for a Digital Driver Licence – and now millions of Victorians can access them on their phones alongside other government-issued cards like a Working with Children Check, seniors card or fishing licence.”Minister for Government Services Gabrielle Williams said.

RACV AND NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH SHARE TIPS ON AVOIDING NUMBER PLATE THEFT

RACV

RACV and Neighbourhood Watch

Victoria are encouraging motorists to take precautions to protect their vehicles following a sharp rise in number plate theft.

In Victoria, 18,481 number plates were stolen over the 12-month period ending March 2024, a 23 per cent increase on the 15,009 stolen in the previous year following the release of the latest data from the Victorian Crime Statistics Agency.

CEO of Neighbourhood Watch Victoria Bambi Gordon highlighted the importance of addressing the issue and the wider implications of number plate theft.

“While having your number plate stolen may just seem like a low-level crime, the reality is it can have very serious ramifications for motorists – including the potential involvement in identity theft and criminal activities,” Ms Gordon said.

The Victorian Automobile Chamber of Commerce (VACC) reports that over 50 per cent of fuel theft and various other crimes, involve stolen number plates.

The top three local Government areas across Victoria for number plate theft, according to Crime Statistics Victoria, were Casey (1,351 number plate thefts), Greater Dandenong (1,127) and Hume (987).

“No matter where you live or how you use your vehicle, you can be susceptible,” says Ms Gordon. “It’s really important for everyone who owns a vehicle to take preventative measures to safeguard their number plates.”

Neighbourhood Watch and RACV work together to deliver programs that make communities safer, protected and more connected.

With the support of RACV and the Victorian Government, Neighbourhood Watch Victoria will be presenting 30 Safe Plate Day events across metropolitan Melbourne through to June 30, 2024.

RACV and Neighbourhood Watch Victoria recommend the following tips to help prevent number plate theft:

1. Use anti-theft screws: Install anti-theft screws on your number plates to deter thieves from easily removing them.

2. Park in well-lit areas: Whenever possible, park your vehicle in well-lit and populated areas to reduce the risk of theft.

3. Utilise security cameras: If you have access to security cameras, position them to monitor your vehicle and deter potential thieves.

4. Consider anti-theft devices: Explore the use of anti-theft devices such as locking plate frames or security markings to add an extra layer of protection.

If your number plates are stolen, it’s important to report the theft immediately to local police and VicRoads. You should also notify your insurance company and roadside assistance of your new registration details. For more information on how to prevent your number plates from being stolen, visit the Neighbourhood Watch Victoria website.

“IT REALLY HELPED ME A LOT FOR MY FUTURE LIFE AND EVEN CAREER JOURNEY”

LEARN LOCAL BRINGS ACCESSIBLE

EDUCATION TO MIGRANT COMMUNITIES.

Being one of the world’s major ‘immigration nations’, nearly 30% of Australia’s population was born overseas. However, settling in Australia can be challenging, particularly for recent migrants. The Victorian Government’s Learn Local initiative aims to remove barriers and provide people of all backgrounds with practical learning opportunities that can enhance their work and personal lives.

Learn Local’s low cost courses are available at over 200 community centres across metro and regional Victoria. Adult learners can enrol in a broad range of subjects including job-finding skills, digital literacy and computer skills, English language, and financial literacy skills.

The initiative equips participants with greater confidence, increased social connection and provides a critical step in their personal and professional journeys.

As a new migrant to Australia from China, Jack Zhou undertook an English language course at Kew Neighbourhood Learning Centre. He learned critical skills for his everyday life and was able to find a sense of community by connecting with others with similar experiences.

“The course really helped me improve my English language skills and my knowledge of Australian culture. It really helped me a lot for my future life and even career journey. If you’re new to [the country] I think it’s very good for you to join your local community centre, because one thing you can do is meet some new friends.”

For migrants like Mahasin El Sharieff, who immigrated to Australia from Sudan, finding employment was a priority when settling in Australia. Demand for workers in Victoria remains strong, with more than 300,000 new workers expected by 2026, yet many migrants face obstacles when attempting to join the workforce.

Mahasin enrolled in English classes and a one-on-one English program at Farnham Street Neighbourhood Learning Centre (FSNLC) to help her find work. The volunteer she was paired with played a crucial role in helping her secure a job in the services industry, and also supported her throughout the training process. Currently, Mahasin is balancing work with her studies at FSNLC, where she is enrolled in a Workplace English and Digital Skills program to gain digital skills for her job. On her improvement in computer skills, Mahasin says, “Before I wasn’t good at computers, but now I’ve improved.”

Reflecting on her learning journey, Mahasin expresses a sense of independence: “ I feel confident to go [to] any place and ask a question. I do everything for myself.”

Similarly, 77-year-old Vui Nguyen finds learning gives her the confidence to be independent.

Originally from Vietnam, Vui enrolled in classes at Yarraville Community Centre at the recommendation of her friends.

“I decided to learn English for my children’s sake. But now I sometimes go to the city and can ask for directions from people. It makes me happy I can speak to my neighbours.”

Apprehensive at first, Vui is currently studying Computer Skills, which is her third Learn Local course. She now encourages others to enrol: “If you’re older like me, you shouldn’t be afraid to try it. It’s at a community centre, which is not far away and it’s beginner friendly.”

I never thought I’d become a teacher. Growing up in a family of engineers, I always thought I’d follow the same path. Turns out, life had other plans. Now, I share my passion for Maths and Physics with a classroom of teenagers every day, and I love every second of it.

Looking back, I can see that my passions and interests were signs that pointed me towards teaching all along. So, I thought I’d share some of those signs with you. Who knows? You might see some of these traits in yourself.

1: You feel that helping others is impactful.

I’ve always found great joy in helping others, even as a young child. Back then, I thought engineering would be my way of making a difference. But now I can see that the impact I have

on students can last just as long as any scientific breakthrough.

Beyond the textbooks and lesson plans, we shape students into the best versions of themselves. It’s why almost every adult can remember their favourite teacher – our impact stays with students long after they leave school.

2: You enjoy sharing your unique skills and passions.

A common misconception about teaching is that you have to love public speaking. What really matters is conveying passion and knowledge in a way that resonates.

Think about the last time you recommended your favourite book or show to a friend, and how easy it was to talk about. Passion is infectious, and your

SIGNS THAT TEACHING COULD BE YOUR CALLING

enthusiasm could be the spark that ignites a lifelong pursuit for a student.

3: You value the opportunity to shape the next generation of young Australians. Knowing your stuff is important, but being a great teacher requires more than knowing facts and figures. It’s about empathy, compassion, and making real connections with your students.

Understanding where students are coming from and being there for them – that’s what sets the best teachers apart.

4: You want to help create a society where diversity is celebrated and respected.

Teaching is your chance to be a champion for inclusivity. Having a cohort of teachers that reflects the society we live in is an important part of this. Coming from a migrant family, I’ve noticed how students benefit from interacting with teachers who share a similar background to them.

Creating a classroom where every student is seen, heard and feels valued can have a powerful impact for all.

I have also personally experienced the benefits of having more teachers from diverse backgrounds. I’ve seen how it can encourage curiosity and enhance respect across the wider school community.

5: You want opportunities to learn and grow professionally, financially and personally.

Almost everything I’ve learnt about great communication has come from my career as a teacher. You may be surprised to learn that teaching can open doors to many opportunities. I’ve had the chance to expand my knowledge, attend leadership workshops, and even speak at the World Economic Forum in New York.

Whilst job stability is certainly a benefit of the teaching profession, it also offers a range of growth opportunities – whether it’s progressing into senior leadership roles, learning new innovative teaching methods or simply switching subjects or year levels.

6: You enjoy variety in your work.

If you thrive on novelty and change, there’s nothing like working with young minds. I get to adapt to the day as I go, all while seeing growth and progress happen right in front of me. As a teacher you’re constantly exposed to new people and thinking, which is inspiring and rewarding.

7: Thinking about the future and what humankind can create, excites you.

I’ve always been excited about innovation. Sharing that passion with students

means I get to sow the seeds of the next big ideas before they’ve even made it into the world.

By instilling a sense of curiosity and wonder, and encouraging their young minds, we pave the way for everything they could create once they leave our classroom.

8: You’re open to the idea that great talent is built, not born.

Ever heard the saying “practice makes perfect”? Well, it applies to teaching too. Sure, some people might seem like naturalborn teachers, but the truth is, it’s a skill that can be learned.

I never expected I’d be considered as an outstanding teacher. I’ve found that with dedication, passion, and a willingness to learn, anyone can become an exceptional teacher.

Does this sound like you?

Whilst you don’t need every trait on this list to become a teacher, I wouldn’t be surprised if you recognise some of these in yourself.

If you do, it could be time to look at the possibilities that teaching offers. Like me, you might even find your calling in the classroom.
