‫مجلس الشيوخ األسترالي يرفض التعديالت‬ ‫المقترحة للحصول على الجنسية األسترالية‬ ‫‪sbs‬‬

‫�أع�ل��ن وزي��ر الهجرة وحماية‬ ‫الحدود بيتر دات��ن في ت�صريح ل�شبكة ال‬ ‫‪� ABC‬أن كل من قدم �أوراقه للح�صول‬ ‫على الجن�سية اال�سترالية بعد الع�شرين‬ ‫من �أبريل ني�سان الما�ضي �سيتم معالجة‬ ‫ط �ل �ب��ه وت �ق �ي �ي��م ن�ت�ي�ج��ة اخ��ت��ب��اره ح�سب‬ ‫القوانين المعمول بها حالي ًا ف��ي البالد‬ ‫دون �أي تعديالت بعد رف�ض مجل�س ال�شيوخ‬ ‫تمريرها هذا الم�ساء‪.‬‬ ‫وكانت التعديالت التي طرحتها الحكومة‬ ‫الفدرالية في �شهر �أبريل ني�سان الما�ضي‬ ‫ت�شمل تمديد فترة �إقامة المتقدم للح�صول‬

‫على الجن�سية �إلى ‪� ٤‬سنوات على ت�أ�شيرة‬ ‫الإقامة الدائمة �إلى جانب الح�صول على‬ ‫درجة “الكفاءة” في اللغة الإنجليزية وهي‬ ‫تعادل الم�ستوى الأكاديمي الجامعي‪.‬‬ ‫وك��ان ي�سعى وزي��ر الهجرة بيتر دات��ن �إلى‬ ‫�أن تطبق التعديالت على الطلبات التي‬ ‫تم تقديمها بعد الع�شرين من �شهر �أبريل‬ ‫ني�سان �إال �أن المقترح واجه رف�ض مجل�س‬ ‫ال�شيوخ م�ساء اليوم‪.‬‬ ‫ودعا حزب ال�سناتور نيك زينافون الحكومة‬ ‫�إلى بدء العمل بمعالجة طلبات المتقدمين‬ ‫للح�صول على الجن�سية الأ�سترالية كي‬ ‫ت��وق��ف ح��ال��ة ال �ح �ي��رة ال �ت��ي �أ� �ص �ي��ب بها‬ ‫المتقدمون بح�سب تعبيرهم‪.‬‬

‫ويعني ق��رار مجل�س ال�شيوخ رف��ض هذه‬ ‫التعديالت �أن م�ستوى اللغة الإنجليزية‬ ‫المطلوب في االمتحان �سيكون “متو�سط”‬ ‫كما كان في ال�سابق و�أنه في حال تو�صلت‬ ‫الحكومة الفدرالية �إل��ى اتفاق مع مجل�س‬ ‫ال�شيوخ فلن تدخل التغيرات حيز التنفيذ‬ ‫�سوى في الأول من تموز يوليو عام ‪٢٠١٨‬‬ ‫وب�إمكان الحكومة م�ع��اودة ط��رح م�شروع‬ ‫القانون في حال ح�صلت على دعم مجل�س‬ ‫ال�شيوخ لذلك‪ ،‬وق��ال متحدث با�سم وزير‬ ‫ال�ه�ج��رة ب�ه��ذا الخ�صو�ص �أن الحكومة‬ ‫�ستفعل ما بو�سعها لت�شديد قوانين الح�صول‬ ‫على الجن�سية بالتو�صل �إل ��ى ات �ف��اق مع‬ ‫�أع�ضاء مجل�س ال�شيوخ الم�ستقلين‪.‬‬

‫مجموعة أولى من المهاجرين‬ ‫تغادر أستراليا إلى أميركا‬ ‫سيدني ‪ -‬أ ف ب‬

‫غ ��ادرت مجموعة �أول ��ى من‬ ‫مخيم احتجاز مثير ًا للجدل‬ ‫ع�شرين الجئ ًا َ‬ ‫تديره �أ�ستراليا في منطقة المحيط الهادئ‬ ‫�أم�س‪ ،‬متوجهة �إلى الواليات المتحدة‪ ،‬عم ًال‬ ‫باتفاق يندد به الرئي�س الأميركي دونالد‬ ‫ترامب‪.‬‬ ‫ويتم نقل هذه المجموعة في �إط��ار اتفاق‬ ‫بين كانبيرا و�إدارة الرئي�س الأم�ي��رك��ي‬ ‫ال�سابق باراك �أوباما‪ ،‬انتقده ب�شدة ترامب‬ ‫عند و�صوله الى البيت الأبي�ض‪.‬‬ ‫وتعتمد �أ�ستراليا �سيا�سة �صارمة للغاية‬ ‫تجاه الالجئين الذين يحاولون الو�صول‬ ‫�إلى �شواطئها‪ ،‬فتر�سلهم �إلى مخيمات في‬ ‫جمهورية ن��اورو �أو �إلى جزيرة مانو�س في‬ ‫بابوازيا‪-‬غينيا الجديدة‪.‬‬ ‫ف��ي المح�صلة‪ ،‬ال ت�ستقبل �أ�ستراليا �أي‬ ‫الجئ على �أرا�ضيها وتحاول �إر�سال الذين‬ ‫ي�ستوفون من بينهم معايير حق اللجوء �إلى‬

‫دول �أخرى‪.‬‬ ‫ووافقت �إدارة �أوباما على ا�ستقبال عدد غير‬ ‫محدود من بين الالجئين الى �أ�ستراليا‪،‬‬ ‫ب�ع��د �أن واف �ق��ت الأخ��ي��رة ع�ل��ى ا�ستقبال‬ ‫الجئين من �أميركا الو�سطى محتجزين في‬ ‫مخيمات تديرها الواليات المتحدة‪.‬‬ ‫وو��ص��ف ت��رام��ب بعد و�صوله �إل��ى الحكم‬ ‫االت �ف��اق ب��ال �ـ «غ �ب��ي»‪ .‬و�أع �ل �ن��ت ال�سفارة‬ ‫الأميركية في بورت مور�سبي �أن ‪ 24‬الجئ ًا‬ ‫ك��ان��وا محتجزين ف��ي م��ان��و��س‪ ،‬غ ��ادروا‬ ‫بابوازيا �إلى مانيال ومنها �إلى وجهة غير‬ ‫محددة في الواليات المتحدة‪.‬‬ ‫وقالت الناطقة با�سم ال�سفارة بيفيرلي‬ ‫ثاكر‪�« :‬إنها المجموعة الأولى التي تح�صل‬ ‫على ال�ضوء الأخ�ضر‪ ،‬بعد �أن خ�ضعوا لعملية‬ ‫تحقق متقدمة للغاية وا�ستوفوا كل معايير‬ ‫�إعادة توزيعهم»‪.‬‬ ‫و�أ�ضافت �أن حوالى ‪� 30‬آخرين محتجزين‬ ‫في ناورو �سيغادرون في «الأيام القادمة»‪.‬‬ ‫ولم تُحدد جن�سيات ه�ؤالء الذين تم نقلهم‬

‫كما ل��م يعرف ع��دد الالجئين ال��ذي��ن قد‬ ‫ينقلون الى الواليات المتحدة في الم�ستقبل‪.‬‬ ‫وتابعت ثاكر‪« :‬ننتظر نقل الجئين �آخرين‬ ‫ف��ي الأ� �ش �ه��ر ال �ق��ادم��ة‪� .‬سيتغير ال�ج��دول‬ ‫الزمني بناء على مدة عمليات التحقق»‪.‬‬ ‫وهناك حوالى ‪ 800‬رجل هم محتجزون في‬ ‫مانو�س‪ ،‬فيما يحتجز ‪ 371‬الجئ ًا من بينهم‬ ‫رجال ون�ساء و�أطفال في ناورو‪ ،‬وفق �أرقام‬ ‫الإدارة الأ�سترالية ال�صادرة في ‪ 31‬تموز‬ ‫(يوليو) الما�ضي‪.‬‬ ‫ونندت منظمات حقوقية كثيرة بظروف‬ ‫الحياة في مانو�س ون��اورو‪ ،‬م�شيرة �إلى �أن‬ ‫المحتجزين يعانون م��ن م�شاكل نف�سية‬ ‫خطيرة بعد ت�سجيل محاوالت انتحار عدة‬ ‫وحاالت �إيذاء النف�س‪.‬‬ ‫واعتبرت محكمة بابوازيا غينيا الجديدة‬ ‫ال�ع��ام الما�ضي‪� ،‬أن احتجاز الجئين في‬ ‫مانو�س �أمر غير د�ستوري‪ .‬ومن المتوقع �أن‬ ‫تغلق كانبيرا المخيم قريب ًا‪.‬‬

‫بعد ‪ 54‬عام ًا‪..‬‬ ‫«تويوتا» تغلق مصنعها في ملبورن‬ ‫بعد م��رور �أكثر من ‪ 54‬عام ًا‬ ‫ع �ل��ى ت�صنيعها ال �� س �ي��ارات‬ ‫ف��ي �أ�ستراليا‪� ،‬أعلنت �شركة‬ ‫“تويوتا” ل�صناعة ال �� س �ي��ارات �إغ�ل�اق‬ ‫م�صنعها في ملبورن‪ ،‬اليوم الثالثاء‪ ،‬وهو ما‬ ‫يعني �شطب نحو ‪ 2600‬وظيفة‪ ،‬بعد خروج‬ ‫�شركة “فورد” �أي�ض ًا من ال�سوق الأ�سترالي‪،‬‬ ‫وا�ستعدادات “هولدين” لإغالق م�صنعها‬ ‫كذلك‪.‬‬ ‫وق��ال وزي��ر ال�صناعة في والي��ة فيكتوريا‬ ‫وادي نونان �إنه “يوم حزين‪ ،‬ويمثل نهاية‬ ‫ع�صر الت�صنيع في الوالية”‪.‬‬ ‫ونقلت وكالة الأن�ب��اء الألمانية عن رئي�س‬ ‫نقابة العمال ديف �سميث قوله لل�صحفيين‬ ‫خ��ارج م�صنع “تويوتا” في �إلتونا ن��ورث‪،‬‬ ‫حيث �سوف يتم �إنهاء �إنتاج ط��راز �سيارة‬ ‫“كامبري” اليوم‪� ،‬إن هذه الخطوة “تمثل‬ ‫يوم ًا م�أ�ساوي ًا بالن�سبة لوالية فيكتوريا؛ لأن‬ ‫اليوم يمثل �إنهاء قطاع ت�صنيع ال�سيارات”‪.‬‬ ‫ي�شار �إلى �أن “تويوتا”‪ ،‬التي بد�أت الإنتاج‬ ‫في �أ�ستراليا عام ‪ ،1963‬تعد ثاني �شركة‬ ‫ل�صناعة ال��س�ي��ارات تغلق م�صنعها في‬ ‫�أ��س�ت��رال�ي��ا خ�لال ع��ام�ي��ن‪ ،‬وك��ان��ت �شركة‬

‫كلمات جديدة تدخل القاموس‬ ‫األسترالي وكلمات تغيرت معانيها‬ ‫ع��اد ًة ما ن�سمع كلمات‬ ‫ا�سترالية بحتة ي�صعب‬ ‫على المهاجر وحتى ان‬ ‫تحدث االنكليزية بطالقة فهمها �أو‬ ‫حتى اعادة ا�ستخدامها بعد معرفة‬ ‫دالالتها‪ .‬من هذه الكلمات بب�ساطة‬ ‫الطريقة الأ�سترالية بالتحية ‪G’day‬‬ ‫‪ mate‬والتي ت�شكل �أولى ال�صدمات‬ ‫اللغوية التي يعي�شها المهاجر �أو‬ ‫القادم الجديد �إلى ا�ستراليا‪.‬‬ ‫واليوم نعرفكم على كلمات جديدة‬ ‫تمت ا�ضافتها �إلى قامو�س ‪Oxford‬‬ ‫الأ�سترالي وال��ذي يتم تحديثه كل‬ ‫عام‪ .‬بع�ض هذه الكلمات لها معان‬ ‫تقنية فر�ضها ع�صر التكنلوجيا مثل‬ ‫‪� Dark web‬أي ال�سوق ال�سوداء‬ ‫ال�خ��ا��ص��ة ب�ع��ال��م االن �ت��رن��ت وال�ت��ي‬ ‫عادة يتم تداول المعلومات الأمنية‬ ‫وال�ب�ي��ان��ات ال�شخ�صية الم�سروقة‬ ‫عليها‪.‬‬ ‫�أ ّما بع�ض الكلمات الجديدة التي تم‬ ‫اختيارها لتدخل القامو�س من بين‬ ‫‪ 2000‬كلمة اقترحت على القائمين‬ ‫عليه كانت اخت�صارات باتت متداولة‬ ‫ب�شكل كبير مثل ‪ Whateves‬وهي‬ ‫اخت�صار لـ ‪! ‫حفنة يومية من‬ ‫“األوميغا ‪ ”6‬تبعد‬ ‫مرض السكري من‬ ‫النوع الثاني‬ ‫�أ�شارت �أبحاث جديدة �إلى �أن تناول عدد قليل من المك�سرات‬ ‫يوميا يمكن �أن يمنع الإ�صابة بمر�ض ال�سكري من النوع الثاني‪.‬‬ ‫و�أظهرت الدرا�سة �أن الأطعمة الغنية بالأوميغا ‪ ،6‬مثل المك�سرات‬ ‫وزيت عباد ال�شم�س‪ ،‬تقلل من خطر �إ�صابة �شخ�ص ما بمر�ض ال�سكري من‬ ‫النوع الثاني بما ي�صل �إلى ‪.%35‬‬ ‫وك�شفت البحوث ال�سابقة �أن �أوميغا ‪ 6‬يتحول �إلى حم�ض اللينوليك داخل‬ ‫الج�سم‪ ،‬وهو ما قد يمنع الإ�صابة بمر�ض ال�سكري من النوع الثاني عن طريق‬ ‫تح�سين التمثيل الغذائي للدهون والمحافظة على ح�سا�سية الأن�سولين‪.‬‬ ‫وق��ال الم�ؤلف الرئي�سي للدرا�سة‪ ،‬جاي�سون ُوو‪ ،‬من معهد ج��ورج لل�صحة‬ ‫العالمية في �سيدني �إن‪“ :‬النتائج التي تو�صلنا �إليها ب�ش�أن التغيير الب�سيط في‬ ‫النظام الغذائي‪ ،‬قد تحمي النا�س من تطور مر�ض ال�سكري من النوع الثاني‬ ‫الذي و�صل �إلى م�ستويات تثير القلق في جميع �أنحاء العالم”‪.‬‬ ‫وقام الباحثون بتحليل نتائج ‪ 20‬درا�سة من ‪ 10‬بلدان �أجريت بين عامي ‪1970‬‬ ‫و‪ ،2010‬و�شملت قرابة ‪ 39740‬بالغا ممن تتراوح �أعمارهم بين ‪ 49‬و‪ 76‬عاما‪،‬‬ ‫ولم يكن لدى �أي منهم �أعرا�ض مر�ض ال�سكري في بداية الدرا�سات‪.‬‬ ‫وتم اختبار وجود حم�ض اللينوليك وحم�ض الأراكيدونيك‪ ،‬وهما العالمات‬ ‫الدالة على تناول الأوميغا ‪.6‬‬ ‫وقد تو�صلت النتائج �إلى �أن تناول حفنة من المك�سرات‪ ،‬وكذلك فول ال�صويا‬ ‫وزيوت البذور التي تحتوي على �أوميغا ‪ ،6‬يوميا‪ ،‬يمكن �أن تمنع الإ�صابة بمر�ض‬ ‫ال�سكري من النوع الثاني‪ ،‬باعتبار �أن الذين لديهم م�ستويات مرتفعة من‬ ‫حم�ض اللينوليك هم �أقل عر�ضة بن�سبة ‪ % 35‬لتطور مر�ض ال�سكري من النوع‬ ‫الثاني من �أولئك الذين يعانون من �أدنى الكميات‪.‬‬ ‫والجدير بالذكر �أن ج�سم الإن�سان غير قادر على �إنتاج حم�ض اللينوليك �إذ‬ ‫يح�صل عليه عن طريق الغذاء بعد ه�ضم الأطعمة التي تحتوي الأوميغا ‪.6‬‬ ‫وعلى النقي�ض ت�شير الدرا�سات ال�سابقة �إلى �أن الأوميغا ‪ 6‬قد ي�سبب بع�ض‬ ‫االلتهابات ويمكن �أن ي�ؤدي �إلى الإ�صابة ب�أمرا�ض القلب‪.‬‬ ‫الم�صدر‪RT :‬‬

‫سجن طويل األمد ألسترالية‬

‫قتلت ابنها ألنه يشبه أباه!‬

‫ق��ض��ت محكمة �أ� �س �ت��رال �ي��ة ب�سجن‬ ‫ام ��ر�أة م��دة ‪ 33‬ع��ام��ا‪ ،‬بعد �إدانتها‬ ‫بقتل طفلها‪ ،‬الذي لم يتجاوز عمره ‪3‬‬ ‫�سنوات‪ ،‬ل�سبب غريب تمثل في �أنه ي�شبه �أباه!‬ ‫ونقلت وكالة الأنباء الألمانية عن قا�ضي المحكمة‬ ‫العليا في والية نيو �ساوث ويلز قوله �أثناء النطق‬ ‫بالحكم‪�“ :‬إنها جريمة قتل طفل مروعة”‪.‬‬ ‫وكانت الأم ادعت �أن طفلها وا�سمه جوزيف توفي‬ ‫�إثر تعثره بحبل ربطت به كالب الأ�سرة في الفناء‪،‬‬ ‫�إال �أنها اعترفت لرجال الأمن ب�أن الطفل كان يثير‬

‫غيظها كثيرا‪ ،‬و�أنها ف ّكرت مرات في قتله‪.‬‬ ‫وخاطبت هذه ال�سيدة الغريبة الأط��وار المحكمة‬ ‫قائلة‪“ :‬ال ت�سيئوا فهمي‪ ..‬لقد كنت �أحب الطفل‬ ‫حقا‪ ..‬ولكن ك��ان هناك ج��زء مني يكرهه؛ لأنه‬ ‫ي�شبه والده لأنه ابن �أبيه”‪.‬‬ ‫وعلق القا�ضي خالل النطق بالحكم قائال‪“ :‬بدال‬ ‫من �أن ترعى طفلها‪ ،‬عاقبته كما لو كان م�س�ؤوال‬ ‫عن �أخ�ط��اء وال��ده‪� .‬إنها �صورة غريبة ووح�شية‬ ‫ل�سلوكها مع طفلها”‪.‬‬ ‫و�أثبتت التحريات �أن الطفل تعر�ض للتعذيب في‬

Uber Creates a Community Where I Can Belong Around 70,000 Australians drive on the Uber app and, according to a driver survey conducted in early 2017, the most important attribute is flexibility. On the Uber app, drivers can set their own schedule and be their own boss. Ali is one of these drivers. He came to Australia six years ago from Iraq and has lived in Perth ever since. He quit a stressful job working long hours as a chef in a restaurant to become an Uber driverpartner because he loves working flexible hours with good earnings. He can also send money back home to support two of his sisters, both who live with a disability. Ali believes that driving on the Uber app will allow him to save up enough money to build a house for his family back home in Iraq. While being fluent in English and speaking Arabic at home, Ali doesn’t

find him surrounded by Arabic-speaking people in Perth, which makes it difficult for him at times to feel connected to the community. “Life is not easy and I feel lonely at times living in a foreign country. I miss home and my family a lot, but through driving with Uber I’ve met and talked to many people, sometimes it makes my day if I have had a great conversation. I’m not feeling that homesick because Uber is a driving community I belong to,” Ali said. Ali also loves to go fishing in his spare time when he’s not driving. “I’ve been driving on Uber for 14 months. I’ve got my work life balance now so I have time to do things I enjoy. Both students and school teachers have worked tirelessly to showcase and shine light on our students’ amazing talent. Under the Theme “ My Vision of the Word” The highlight of 2017 show is encouraging young and emerging artist to celebrate our colleges’ diversity through ‘Art’ There will be a variety of interactive activities and events including art workshops to FEEL, SEE and HEAR, student art work to LOVE and ADMIRE.

Al Taqwa is a community built on mutual understanding, communication and vision, and there is no language that unites a community quite like art. Our students – from year 7 to 12, from first-time artists to veterans of paint and canvas – have taken their visions and interpretations of the world around them and immortalised them in paint, ink, pencil and charcoal. Through their work, we are given a unique opportunity to see through their eyes and share their worlds. It is a core principle of the art team at Al Taqwa that our students should not be led – instead, our job is to show them the path and light their way as they walk it. In My Vision of the World, our students have shown us the path. “

A conference titled AUS:DXB exploring innovation in the global Islamic economy and the future of Halal trade was held on Monday 25 September 2017 at the Shangri-La Hotel, Sydney, Australia. The event was hosted by the Australian Arab Chamber of Commerce & Industry (AACCI) in partnership with Dubai Exports and the Dubai Islamic Economy Development Centre. The conference was part of a series of events in Sydney and Melbourne designed to nurture conversation, creativity, ideas, & trade between the Dubai & Australian government & cultural institutions, organisations & creative industries. Mr Mohammed Al Kamali, Deputy CEO of Dubai Exports said, “We now return to Australia with a much wider scope that captures new aspects in Islamic Economy including Islamic lifestyles like design, fashion, art and culture, Islamic tourism, Islamic charitable acts and innovation. In doing so we hope to capitalise on the strengths of Australia and create opportunities for companies in Australia and the UAE.” The Chief Guest for the event was Professor Bob Carr, currently Director, AustraliaChina Relations Institute, University of Technology, Sydney.

Global perspectives on Islamic creative economy Another AUS:DXB event was held in Melbourne on Wednesday 27 September with Dubai Arts & Culture Authority launching the book The ‘Global Perspectives on the Islamic Creative Economy’ at the Islamic Museum of Australia. The chief guest, The Hon Robin Scott, Minister of Multicultural Affairs VIC gave an empowering speech, followed by a welcome by Mr Asad Ansari, Deputy Chairperson, Islamic Museum of Australia. The keynote launch presentation of the book was by Ms Arwa Al Qassim, Museum specialist from Dubai Culture & Arts Authority. The book is a non-academic study by Dubai Culture (includes interviews/ survey results), that is part of the rising interest in the creative economy among city managers and cultural organisations. The event began with a multi-disciplinary panel of local & international experts exploring Islamic arts & culture across government, museums and creative institutions. The World As It Could Be Jamilah Samian

I just learnt a new acronym: VUCA. VUCA, I was told, has two possible meanings to reflect the world we live in today. The first VUCA stands for Volatile Uncertain Complex Ambiguous. It means: We live in a world that is dangerously unstable, hanging by a thread, complicated and confusing. I call this VUCA negative. The other meaning for VUCA is Vision Understanding Collaborative Agile. It means: With a compelling vision and a more understanding perspective, one may choose to be collaborative with others, becoming agile and adaptive, so that we could all do better. I call this VUCA positive, where enduring hope abides. Who are “we”, you may ask? Anyone and everyone who considers it his or her duty to be accountable for the well-being of the universe. VUCA positive and VUCA negative belong to two entirely different camps. Seeing yourself as VUCA positive doesn’t mean you ignore what’s not right in the world. Rather, you take notice of what’s unpleasant near you, and do something about it, to the best of your ability. Everyone of us has a circle of influence. VUCA positives commit to do what they can within their circle of influence. VUCA positives are incurably and obstinately

optimistic. Let me share with you a book I read recently that embodies VUCA positive. In Blue Ocean Shift: Beyond Competing, W. Chan Kim and Renée Mauborgne wrote about a world where one’s gain doesn’t come at the expense of others. Instead, the world we should all aspire to invent is one where organisations and individuals go beyond competing “to create new frontiers of opportunity”. Authentic VUCA positives do not look for external recognitions by the way. Instead, they look for situations where they could create value. Take for instance, Maggie MacDonnell, the lady who won the Global Teacher Award 2017. When she first arrived in the Canadian Arctic, Maggie found a community in a sad state of afffairs. In 2015 alone, six males aged 18 to 25 committed suicide in Salluit, a village that could only be reached by air. Maggie had a vision of a better future. With a radically different approach and through acts of kindness, she sought to understand her target group of youths, turning”problem” youths into “solutions”. Together with the community, she raised funds and established a fitness centre for youths, collaborated with a daycare centre, and set up a community kitchen where youths work and contribute, lifting their sense of worth like never before. Maggie has also been

a foster parent to some of her students. Last year, the Global Teacher Award 2016 was also awarded to a teacher who proved that something could be done in the bleakest of circumstances. Hanan al-Hroub, a teacher from Palestine, came up with a fundamentally different way of teaching her students who were and still are exposed to violence in the West Bank city of Ramallah. Using tools from everyday items, Hanan created an atmosphere of peace, security and harmony, building elements of trust and respect, so her students could learn. Hanan al-Hroub and Maggie MacDonnell are two authentic VUCA positives. Every single day, we meet people who either are VUCA positive or VUCA negative. You become the people you hang out with. VUCA positives refuse to be shrouded by an air of hopelessness. Are you VUCA positive or VUCA negative? To which camp do you belong? As a Muslim, I believe that one day, God Almighty will set things right, that I do not

have the big picture which only He has. My job is to do the good that I can do, now, for the people around me especially my family, my neighbours. In the depth of my heart, I know there are many, many men and women out there who focus on doing good, the unsung heroes if you like, who refuse to accept that things are so dreary, so hopeless, that it’s not worth to do anything good. Which brings to mind these words: “If you wait till you’re able to do everything for everybody, instead of doing something for somebody, you’ll end up doing nothing for nobody.” - Anonymous.

FECCA Conference

ICV The Federation of Ethnic Communities Council of Australia’s, FECCA, conducted a conference 8-10 October 2017 in Darwin. Representatives of ethnic communities, NGOs, different levels of governments and political parties participated. The current and future role of multiculturalism in Australia was discussed.

ICV Head Imam Sheikh Abdinur Weli represented the ICV speaking on the topic of Organ and Tissue donation in ethnic communities. Reflecting on his experiences the Sheikh spoke about the importance of engaging the grassroots community as the best place for social change. Hospital Chaplaincy Immersion Day

ICV The ICV in conjunction with Spiritual Health Victoria hosted an immersion day for 17 students from Stirling University on Tuesday the 17th of November. Information about Islam was presented and participants interacted with the leaders and community members to explore the religion and its distinctive

resources and spirituality. The event now in its fifth year gave Students from the theological college a chance to immerse themselves in Islam for the day. Starting with an introduction to Islam at the city mosque. Students were given a primer on Islam by Prof. Aladin Zayegh touching on the 5 pillars of Islam, religious sources and dietary habits. This was followed by presentation on health and care

by event organiser and hospital coordinator Lina Ayoubi which struck a chord with many that performed chaplaincy work within their own traditions. In a conversation with one of the chaplains, Lina was elated to hear her saying: “ Pastoral care will never feel the same again” Hinting at the prophetic assertion that the victors sitting with patients “would be actually sitting in a piece of paradise eating from its fruits”.

Islamic History of Persecuted Rohingya in

The term Rohingya The term “Rohingya” may come from “Rakhanga” or “Roshanga” which were the ancient names of the Muslim state of Arakan, implying that Rohingyas were the inhabitants of this state. In 1974, Burmese government changed the name of the state of Arakan to the state of Rakhine. Currently, there are 1.1 million Rohingyas live in the state of Rakhine.

The Islamic History of Arakan Muslim presence in Arakan date back as early as 9th century, prior to the establishment of the first Burmese empire in 1055 by King

In 1404, the Arakanese King Narameikhla was deposed and subsequently fled to Bengal. He was well received by Sultan Giyathuddin Azam Shah (1390-1411). King Narameikhla embrassed Islam and adopted the Muslim name of Solaiman Shah. The King of Bengal Jalaluddin Mohammad Sha restored Solaiman Shah in the Throne of Arakan in 1430. Eleven kings successively ruled Arakan for hundred years from 1430 to 1531. They improved peoples’ economic, social and religious well-beings in Arakan. These 11 kings were Solaiman Shah Narameikhla (1430-1434), Ali Khan Meng Khari (1434-1459), Kalima Shah Ba Saw Phyu (1459-1482), Mathu Shah Doulya (1482-1492), Mohammad Shah Ba Saw Nyo (1492-1493), Nori Shah Ran Aung (14931494), Sheikh Modullah Shah Salingathu (14941501), Ili Shah Meng Raza (1501-1523), Ilias Shah Kasabadi (1523-1525), Jalal Shah Meng Saw Oo (1525) and Ali Shah Thatasa (15251531).

The Persecution of Rohingya Persecution of Rohingya commenced in 1550 during the reign of King Bayinnaung who prohibited the practice of Halal food from Islamically slaughtered animals along with the banning of Eid al Adhha. In 1938, a major anti-Muslim riot occurred due to the Burmese sentiments that Rohingyas including Indian migrants were foreigners. Muslim shops, houses and Mosques were looted, destroyed or

Minaret College’s new Place of Assembly

Place of Assembly Minaret College’s new Place of Assembly is nearing completion and the school will commence utilizing this facility shortly. The design of the building establishes a new architectural language for Islamic architecture in the contemporary Australian context for Minaret College. It is a place of prayer assembly for the school community. It is a building with a contemporary minaret - symbolising Minaret College. It is a precinct without many of the courtyard walls or water fountains that you would normally see in Islamic buildings. It is a building that is not exclusive, but inclusive of modern architecture. It is predominantly the College’s

Minbar prayer place with exterior replicating Islamic art in modern context, whilst bluestone rendering and sandstone external finishes complement Australian identity. The Islamic pattern in the form of Aludean screens, used sparingly, symbolizes some aspects of ancient Islamic art. There is only one symbolic minaret designed to make a bold statement of unity in Islam. The minaret has been adapted so that students imagine the importance of the call to prayer. All external elements including arches, facade patterns and single minaret adds to the Islamic identity. Simplicity is the key to this building, with warm colors and the aludean screening changes colors as the sun moves from east to west.

The interior posed a unique challenge – to respect the sacred traditions of the Islamic faith as described by the qiblah wall facing Mecca and the minbar, or pulpit, rising high to address congregation and observance of the focal point. The design of the minbar is also very symbolic as it reflects the index finger “Tawheed” and the black niche framing arising from symbolic Kaaba. Elements of external aludean patterning is tranferred into the interior to provide consistency using different materials and colors . The plants also are a selection to enhance Islamic feelings of nature and tranquility. Olive, figs and date palm trees are all mentioned in Quran and the fruits

are consumed throughout the Muslim world. This building is truly very simple, yet very modern, without clip on domes and decorations and blends well within Australian landscape. It was designed by Hakan from Elevli Plus architects. The documentation of the design was undertaken by MSM architects and built by MISR constructions. The project was managed by Subhan Ali, Executive Manager Operations, Minaret College. It will have a capacity of 400 worshippers on the ground floor and 320 upstairs and has provision for both male and females and will be predominantly be used by Minaret College students for a range educational activities.

Have your say in the Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey The Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey is your chance to have your say on whether Australian law should be changed to allow same-sex couples to marry. By now, all eligible Australians should have received their survey materials in the mail. If you haven’t received your survey form or it’s been lost or damaged, you can request a replacement survey from the ABS. The last day to request a survey form is 6pm (local time) on Friday 20 October. To request a new form: • You can complete the online enquiry form on the ABS website and a replacement form will be sent to you. You will be asked to provide personal information, like a driver’s licence or Australian passport, to verify your identity. • You can visit a capital city of regional pick-up location where you can get a form, ask for information, complete, and drop off your form. • You can also call the Information Line on 1800 572 113 and ask for a replacement form to be sent to you. If you’re travelling overseas, or live

in aged care facility or have an illness, disability or injury you can use the paperless option to complete your survey. You will need to get a Secure Access Code by going to the ABS website or by calling the Information Line. You can then use the 16-digit Secure Access Code to respond through an automated telephone service, a secure online form or by contacting the ABS Customer Assistance Team on 1800 572 113. ABS Deputy Australian Statistician and Taskforce Lead, Jonathan Palmer, said there is range of support available for people who have limited or no ability to read or speak English to help them participate in the survey. “Help in your language can be arranged by calling TIS National on 131 450 (within Australia) or +613 9268 8332 (outside Australia). “You can also ask a trusted person (a family member or friend) to help you to complete your survey, or to complete the survey on your behalf,” Mr Palmer said. Survey forms must be received by the ABS by 6pm (local time) on 7 November 2017 to be included in the count. Survey results will be published on 15 November 2017.

Australian researchers in the field and also accessed best practice from Yale University in the US. We hope these guidelines will lead to more rigorous ‘Muslim research’, more culturally competent researchers and real benefits flowing to Muslim Victorians.
