Media Release 01/09/15

The Department of Immigration and Border Protection The 2015 Queensland Labor State Conference was held on 29 and 30 August in Brisbane. Delegates at this conference voted to recognise the state of Palestine in a motion seconded by Duncan MP. Duncan Pegg MP, Member for Stretton spoke in favour of the full recognition of Palestine at the conference. “I was pleased to be able to second this motion and speak in favour of the full recognition of Palestine at this year’s State Labor conference. This is an issue that is important to me and to the people I represent,” he said. “I believe in standing up for the oppressed and shining a light on injustice where it occurs. I am hopeful that in some way this motion supports peace in the Middle East and contributes to Australia finally recognising the state of Palestine.” Mr Pegg said that it was great to see this motion adopted by the conference delegates. The Motion adopted at the Qld Labor State Conference was: ALP 2015 State Conference Recognition of Palestine Conference welcomes the decision of the 2015 National ALP Conference to commit the next Labor Government to moving to recognise the state of Palestine. In view of: * the continued expansion of Israeli settlements on the West Bank;

* the continued demolition of Palestinian homes and villages; * the continued oppression of Palestinian residents of the West Bank; * violence directed at Palestinians by Israeli settlers; * recognition of Palestine by 135 of 193 nation states; and * the Obama Administration’s conclusion that Israel has deliberately obstructed negotiations toward a two state solution the next Labor Government will immediately recognise the state of Palestine. OFFICIAL STATEMENT RE EID AL ADHA 2015

Ismail Cajee President Islamic Council of Queensland Assalamu’alaikum warahmatullahi wabarakatuh, The Islamic Council of Queensland would like to wish the readers of the Al Wasat Newspaper a very blessed and joyous Eid Al Adha. We would also like to thank and congratulate all of the Hajjis and pray for the acceptance of their efforts. This year’s Eid provides us with an opportunity to reflect upon the large scale refugee and humanitarian crisis we are witnessing around the world. We are extremely fortunate to be blessed by Allah (SWT) with the lives that we lead and for that we should always be grateful. Perhaps an appropriate sign of gratitude during these difficult times may be to open our hearts as individuals, and as a community, to the plight of our brothers and sisters who are suffering around the world. We all need to make a concerted effort to assist them in whatever little way that we can and there is no better time to do this. Let us make this year’s Eid one which will be remembered as having made a positive difference to the world. From all of us here at ICQ, we wish you all a very happy Eid and request that you remember us in your prayers. Note: ICQ is working with a number of other community organisations to coordinate the Brisbane Muslim community response to the Refugee crisis. Further information can be found on our website and Facebook page.

Malek Fahd Hoxton Park Campus Message from Acting Principal Malek Fahd Hoxton Park Ms Mona Kassem

Located in Sydney’s’ SouthWestern Suburb, Malek Fahd Hoxton Park (MFHP) first opened in 2011 as a K-2 Primary School. It rapidly grew to over 100 K-4 enrolments in 2013, a K-6 in 2014 and K-Year 7 with approximately 250 students in 2015 and proposed K- Year 8, with 450 students in 2016. MFHP is expanding in size each year and Stage 3 Building Development is currently in the process and will be completed by the end of the year, 2015, Inshaa Allah. The school will then consist of the first Senior High School building, modern library and canteen. The school currently consists of a new Science lab with the latest in design, a Computer Lab, Canteen, library, Music lab, Arts and Textiles room with Wi-Fi Access and COMMBOX/Smart Boards in each classroom. I am proud to say that the students continue to perform well each year. This year, students who sat for NAPLAN, all performed above minimum state level in all tests covering numeracy, reading, writing and language conventions. The school continues to engage with the community by taking part in; Running Kids League Tag Shield organised by Green Valley and Liverpool Police, Tri-Skills Gymnastics Program, Tree Planting, NSW Parliament House Excursion, Premier’s Reading Challenge (PRC), ANZAC Day Ceremony, Harmony Day, The World’s Greatest Shave, Multicultural Eid Festival (MEFF), Alligator Book Fair, Scholastic Book Club, End of Term cake Stalls, Mufti Days, Healthy Harold, Book Character Parade and Author Visit Workshop. MFHP also provided opportunities for extra curricula activities, developing students’ skills in Public Speaking, Drama/Acting, singing Anasheed and playing Daff. This year so far, the upper Primary have started the ‘learn to swim program’ and will go Camping. Year One have also embarked on an excursion to North Head Sanctuary Park in

Manly to explore insects in relation to Science. Other activities that the students have been involved in include and are not limited to: • NRL Oz-tag training by external professionals, • Badminton training by external professionals, • Quran Reading/memorisation competition in school and with other schools in the local area, • Debate and Public speaking in school and with other schools in the local area, • Mind matters and Kids matters program (Welfare, Wellbeing Support), • Student Representative Council (SRC), • Gardening program, • Coding-Hours of code, • Programming-Scratch, • Robocop Competitions • STEM Engagement- Project development initiative, • Green Valley Police Sports Participation, • Crunch and Sip Program, • Drop Everything And Read (DEAR), • NRMA Science and Road Safety Day, • Science Week, • World of Maths, • Jump Rope for Heart, • Clean-Up day, • Jeans for Genes Day In addition, to our continuous effort to improve the school, we have bought Mathletics (Online Maths Tutor Program), Phonics Hero and ABC Program (Online Literacy Program) to further assist our students and integrate ICT into the curriculum. Students have the opportunity to participate in NAPLAN and ICAS. We also encourage support to less fortunate people in our community. This year students were involved in putting together food packs for Burmanese and Palestinian refugees who were happy to share their stories with our students. They also raised funds for the Cancer Council and Heart Foundation. A National Buddy Day was organised to celebrate friendship and help raise awareness of bullying in Australian schools. We raised money that was donated to the Alannah and Madeline Foundation who assist in reducing bullying in schools. We encourage all parents and guardians to take an active role in the education of their child. We welcome parent involvement in the classroom and in a range of school activities, including excursions. Parents and guardians can assist in their child’s learning and success at school by reinforcing that students are at school every day, on time, in full school uniform and have all of the equipment required for a successful school day (including a healthy lunch!). We look forward to seeing this school flourish, delivering excellent programs from Kindergarten to Year 12. We are hoping to be operating at the capacity of 800 students, Insha Allah and what a wonderful sense of accomplishment this will be!

EPIC has won the CMY’s ‘My Education Award’ as

“Outstanding Metropolitan School”

20

Ilim College student Work Experience in a Hospital

Mrs Shanthi Antony (Head of Teaching & Learning) and Mr Ekrem Ozyurek OAM (Principal)

Melbourne EPIC has won the CMY’s ‘My Education Award’ as “Outstanding Metropolitan School” for its contribution to the education of migrant and refugee young people in Victoria through the Out of School Hours Learning Support Program. Mrs. Shanthi Antony & Mrs Azemina Becar received the award from the Deputy Premier and Minister for Education Hon. James Merlino. This recognition is for our effort and our service to our students. Congratulations and thanks to all! All those who have contributed to the establishment of the EPIC OSHLSP: Mandy Ellis, who was the Northern Regional Officer for Learning beyond the Bell in 2011 helped us develop a plan for the OSHLSP.

The Senior Advisors of the National Partnerships Program, especially Julie Christopolous offered consultancy support to establish the program. Bill Eckersley from Victoria University helped initiating a partnership with the

university and involve student teachers as volunteer tutors in the program. Sally Mendes, Volunteer Resource Program Coordinator of DIVRS has been supporting the school in recruiting volunteers for the program. Many volunteers and student

teachers have assisted us in tutoring students. Yasmin Mohamed who was a volunteer and staff at EPIC in the years 2011 to 2013 has significantly contributed during the beginning years. Azemina, needless to say, has been a strong support person in organising and running the program. All the other aides and support staff have willingly contributed to the OSHLSP. Transmission of knowledge is one of the highest form of service to humanity. Teachers hold the privilege of sharing this knowledge to fellow humans. Thanks to all teachers who are tutors in OSHLSP. Our students and the parent community should continue to benefit through the program. The program also highlights Islamic values. Let’s continue our educational journey leading our students to brighter future pathways.

NEW NAME, A NEW STAGE Adelaide Burc College was established in 2005 within Gilles Plains as a nondenominational school by a group of dedicated people, comprising of Turkish and Uyghur background. The College began its humble journey, with 32 students with a focus on serving the Turkish community. However, the high quality of education provided, quickly attracted the attention of the broader community, resulting in a large influx of students and teachers from various backgrounds over the years. The College has now close to 500 students enrolled at its two campuses located at Gilles Plains and Elizabeth East. Over the years, Burc College has become a multicultural school and more than two-thirds of the students are from backgrounds other than Turkish. It has thus grown from a small community school to an educational institution that represents the broader community. This change in the student and teacher composition of the school, has urged the School Board to re-consider its name and seek one that is more meaningful for all Australians. “BURC” a Turkish expression meaning ‘The highest point of a Castle’. However, PINNACLE means the highest or culminating point, as of success, power, fame, which captures the core values of the school. As of 2016, Burc College will continue its journey as Pinnacle College to serve the broader communities.

By Omer Hassan/ Ilim College I’m not going to lie. When most people are asked about work experience, they say it’s the most boring, chill week of school. And there are degrees of accuracy in that statement. But it doesn’t have to be. What I learnt from this experience is that you have to put in the effort because nobody is going to help if you can’t help yourself. Ever since I was a child, people would ask me what my favourite subject was. My response was always “Islamic Studies” or “Science”. So when most people would ask me what I want to study in university, my response would be “something medical”. First of all, I chose the Northern Hospital to do my work experience merely based on my unwavering passion for the field of science. Once you’ve decided or had an indication of where you would like to go in the future, work experience is the perfect way to show you if the field is the right path for you. And if you know it’s extremely competitive, such as the health industry or a law firm, it’s always best to apply early. The most ideal would be mid year in Year 9. You also need to be able to put in the initiative to make sure you get it. For example, my friend and I would call the hospital incessantly to make sure we had the necessary information to do our placement there. It took a few weeks, but surely enough, we both got in. If they ask for a CV or Résumé, make sure you do not fabricate it. Putting false information is not only haram because you’re lying, but it also can get you into serious trouble if they find out. Sometimes the employers would ask for evidence that you achieved a particular award, so it’s best to keep it completely honest. Also make sure to have everything ready before your placement, such as your time and date, Résumé and Tax File Number. So how was it like working in a hospital? One word: amazing. Everyone was really friendly, and they filled up your mind with interesting knowledge that would be most beneficial in the future. Note that work experience is just getting a taste or sample of a particular field, so don’t expect to be in the room while specialists conduct a surgery on a patient. Remember, a 15 year old is nowhere near as experienced as they are, so it’s best to stay out of their way and let them complete their job. But that obviously shouldn’t stop you from asking a million questions. One thing that surprised me was that I wasn’t asked to do much. I later found out that most work experiences are like this. I quietly observed and at times I was asked to do something such as looking under microscopes or watching a gastroscope. Another notable experience was watching a “minisurgery” of a 100 year old patient. Yes, he had just turned 100 the previous month. There wasn’t much opening of the patient, and it was mostly just a small cut to allow a pacemaker to be put in. His heart had stopped for a moment (during the surgery) according to the ESG and everything seemed to stop for a moment. It’s important to do what you love, and not what you’re pressured to do or what runs in the family. Most jobs contribute to society (although some more than others), and as long as your doing that for purely Allah’s sake you’re going to get the most out of your experience. All in all, the hospital atmosphere is unlike any other. I personally believe it’s for me, but it may not be for you. Everyone is really friendly and they are constantly making jokes to stay happy, and at the end of the day you realise that they are just regular people too. It was definitely an eye opening experience.

CARNIVAL

The Indian Bharat Bombers have stamped their claim as the strongest sub-continent football team in Australia, taking out the inaugural South Asia Footy Carnival at Richmond’s Punt Road Oval on Saturday. Playing against rivals Sri Lanka and Pakistan, the Bombers went undefeated in the round robin tournament. Meat pies, hot chips and beers were placed aside for the day with a Sri Lankan food truck, face painting and performances entertaining the crowd. In their first game of Australian Rules football, Sri Lanka came out firing, playing an attacking style of football against India. Inexperience proved to be costly for the Sri Lankans as the Bombers finished the game strongly, winning by 22

points. It didn’t stop a determined Sri Lankan outfit, which managed to defeat the fresh-legged Pakistan Shaheens in an upset. In another upset, India took out their first Dosti ‘Friendship’ Cup, in a very close match against the Shaheens. AFL diversity Engagement and Evaluations Lead Kashif Bouns hailed the carnival a success. “The games, played between the Indian Bharat Bombers, the Pakistan Shaheens and Sri Lanka showed how our game transcends cultures,” Bouns said. – 3 South Asian neigbours “It was the first time Sri Lanka has been represented on the football field and they proved to be the surprise package of the day, which is really exciting for the carnival moving forward. “The rain did not discourage players from taking the play

INFO SESSION WITH OLYMPIC WRESTLER

ALI ABDO

AAIS On Friday 7 August 2015, the Committee Board of the Albanian Australian Islamic Society (AAIS) invited special guest Ali Abdo, who is a three (3) time Olympic wrestler, to give AAIS members and our youth a perspective on something quite interesting and unique. Ali, who is a practicing Muslim of Lebanese background, talked about what it was like growing up as a young Muslim in Australia and also being involved in sports at the highest competitive level. He also touched on the discipline required to compete at the Olympic level – something which only a select few are able to achieve. Ali’s father was also a wrestler, as was

his brother, so wrestling was something that also ran in his family. Another interesting fact was that Ali is also a certified Osteopath and applies his trade to other athletes and assists them in sports related injuries. Ali also spoke of how practicing Islam enabled him to stay focused and grounded during his efforts to represent Australia at the Olympics. I am sure those who were present on the evening would agree that the talk provided by Ali Abdo was very interesting and it was an absolute pleasure to have him talk to AAIS members at our Youth Centre. On behalf of the AAIS Committee, I would like to sincerely thank Ali Abdo for his time and welcome him back again to our Society in the near future.

The counting’s journey

Dr. Mohammad Aamir Hameed

What do you think, how the Europeans used to write and read the numbers before their contact with Islamic civilization !! The huge pillar which the Romans had built to remind the later generations their first sea victory against the Carthage in 260 BC near the city of Mylae; includes two million and two hundred thousands of different forms to write only the number (2,200,000) !! The Question what comes her is, The nation used to need the space of 10 m2 for writing the number (2,200,000); was able - someday - to invention the computers or to measure the large spaces between the stars by their so difficult and boring mathematics systems? If the Islamic civilization didn’t

transfer to the Europe, Indian science of the number, after development of applications of the number (Zero); certainly, the Europe’s dark ages fatality was still covering its nations minds up to this day. The Muslim scholar Mohammad ibn Moosa al-Khwarizmi – who was known in Latin as (Algoritmi) – had summarized in his book the Indian system of the numbers during the outset of ninth century, he also added his own examples to explain this system in easy way for the business men, clerks and the public, in order they can use it in their daily life. And the Europeans were so lucky when the English scholar Athelhart Von Bath had translated this book into the Latin even after three hundred years of al-Khwarizmi’s death, to let them recognize this most important secret of Mathematics. The role of al-Khwarizmi was not only to teach western people how to write the numbers and how to count, but he also let them know how to solve a tough mathematics equations. The mathematics wellknown rule (Algorithmus) still reminds the world this great scholar’s name. furthermore, the followers of this famous mathematics equation

in Spain, German and England, were known also by the name of (Hlgorithmiker) which means: the followers of al-Khwarizmi, and had been suffered from the strong struggle against the old mathematics way (Abacus) until their victory in the final. However, al-Khwarizmi was not the only one creek which provided the Europe with the knowledge of Indian system of numbers and mathematics developmental ways. Off course there were another few efforts after or in same his time. for example we could find the French man in the end of tenth century, who learned in alAndalous (Muslim Spain) and tried to teach his students the same system of Indian numbers, but his mission was not successful, because al-Andalous did not know the number Zero tell that time, and because this French man became the Pope of Cluny Abbey after few time of his teaching and took the name of (Silvester II) for himself. Thus, al-Khwarizmi’s name settled in the mind of the history due to his complete mathematics view and because of his summarized and developmental works which he had left them for the benefit of the humanity.

GIFT OF KINDNESS Happiness and Purpose of Life By Jamilah Samian Months ago, a medical student from a prominent family in my country committed suicide from depression. He was deeply in love with a woman, who left him for another person. What an unhappy man. As my 16-year-old son commented, “Well, mom, if he thinks the purpose of his life is to be the woman’s partner, what’s there for him to live when she’s no longer around?” Makes perfect sense to me. Life with the woman, it seemed, was the young man’s purpose of life and his source of happiness. Then, weeks ago, my mobile phone recorded five missed calls from the same number. I ignored them, thinking it was yet another telemarketer, until a message came through. “Ma’am, may I please speak to you as soon as possible regarding my son?” Her voice sounded familiar. I remember our first meeting, her eyes glistening with tears as she poured her concerns. Her seventeen-year-old son tested positive for drugs, and spent a couple of days in police custody for a juvenile crime. There was little else I could do, other than offer words of comfort and encouragement. The mother was already heavy with guilt and shame. Nothing good would come from telling her that “It’s too late” to do anything. I was consumed by my job, she said. Everything was done on remote. I just wasn’t there when he needed me the most. Another case of lack of purpose in life. You might say, it’s a problem with working parents. But are all working parents to blame for children who failed to turn out right? I don’t think so. Studies have shown that a good number of juveniles come from families with at least one parent staying full time at home. I know of parents, many of them, who work, whose children have the kind of attitude any parent would be proud of. But I also know that these parents, despite their busy schedules, make it a

www.alwasat.com.au info@alwasat.com.au

point to make their presence felt. Children don’t fit into a single mould. Some children did very well in the early years of life, then faltered and failed. Some seemed to be goodfor-nothing, then made a U-turn, and surprised everyone including themselves, with their achievements. I know two good friends who fit this description. One used to bring a report card home every year, full of red marks and F’s. The only paper she got A for was English. She went on to become an accomplished English lecturer. Yet another friend had lackluster school reports, excelled in her university days, and eventually spent seven years abroad studying and working. A person’s attitude towards life is shaped by multidimensional factors. But one factor remains significant – sense of purpose in life, man’s search for meaning. We all seek an answer for the question, “Why am I here?” I find this a recurring theme in the many hours I spent dealing with my own children, with top scholars sponsored by different organisations. Everyone needs a clear purpose in life. Knowing one’s purpose of life is a very important source of happiness and contentment. What you tell them, how you speak to them, in your many interactions with them, leads them to an answer. I believe too many of us parents and educators skip the “Why” question. Either we find it too hard to answer, or we think it’s too trivial and the children and youth should figure it out themselves, or we just get caught up with other matters. At home, we are engrossed with the daily concerns of earning enough or even more, so we could lead a more comfortable life. At school the teachers get in and out of class to cover every inch of

the syllabus. In the end, nobody sit the kids down to discuss this crucial question. Talk to your children in a way they can easily understand. Talking, I learnt years ago, is brain food for children. Responding to their endless questions, encouraging them to understand what matters in the world, how things work, relationships between people, friends and family as they grow older, helping them resolve conflicts by talking objectively rather than hitting and hurting in a physical way, make for smarter mankind. Man’s search for meaning in life begins early on. High in the agenda in the never-ending interview between youngsters and adults, is the word “Why.” Young children, especially, tend not to like being left at home by their parents. Hence the question, “Mom / Dad, why do you work? Why can’t you just stay home with me?” Parents typically say: “I work because I need to pay the bills.” Really? Is that it? Tell them also: “I work to make a difference.” Tell them how. If you are in the medical profession, talk about examples of the lives you saved. Or some that you didn’t. That’s a more meaningful conversation. My message is, be aware of the kind of interactions we have with our youths. It doesn’t have to be an hour long chat. You could talk to your kids in the car on the way to school. You could have a brief exchange before they go to bed or just after they came from a sports activity. But make it happen. Your parenting moments don’t end the day they can make a simple dinner by themselves or order online for something they need. What you say next can make all the difference.

Refugees Affairs

The Arrival of Desperate Refugees Bilal Cleland

ilal42@bigpond.com Some people have greeted the waves of refugees fleeing from the violence of Syria with offers of water and food. Many Hungarians, despite the poisonous attitude of their government, helped the refugees on their trek towards the Austrian border. Austrians greeted them in Vienna with demonstrations of welcome. This was repeated when they reached Germany. Chancellor Merkel spoke out against the neoNazis and bigots who attack refugee centres and said her country would welcome hundreds of thousands of them. France has also offered places for them, as has Sweden. In contrast, Denmark, the Netherlands and Poland have been very negative towards refugees, reflecting the degree of anti-Muslim bigotry in those nations. Croatia allowed them to cross their country at first but has very quickly put up fences like Hungary. Slovenia has also prevented refugees from traversing their land. It has stated that it would only be prepared to take Christian refugees, an echo of several voices from the LNP government in Australia. The attitude of these various nations to the desperate people fleeing to them or through them, illustrates the degree to which humanitarianism has penetrated their societies. Strongly Catholic Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary and Poland have been very miserly in their response, despite the example given by their Pope, as have the more Protestant Britain and the USA. Australia has not fared well but the offer of at least 12,000 places has made us appear to have a modicum of civilization. For Muslims who respect their faith, there is no possibility of ignoring the needs of the desperate. That is why 95% of Syrian refugees are found in just 5 Muslim majority countries, Turkey, Lebanon, Jordan, Iraq and Egypt. It is deep in Islamic culture that refugees have a special place. The first Muslim refugees who fled from persecution in Mecca to the just Christian King of Ethiopia, then the refugee in the person of Muhammad (s) who made hijra from hostile Mecca to Medinah, mean that Muslims understand the significance of helping those who must flee their homes. It is a characteristic of refugees that they flee with few possessions and are in desperate need. We have all seen such examples on television in the past few weeks. There is also a well attested hadith which illustrates the importance placed upon helping desperate refugees by Muhammad (s) himself. Mundhir b. Jarir reported on the authority of his father: While we were in the company of the Messenger of Allah (s) in the early hours of the morning, some people came there (who) were barefooted, naked, wearing striped woollen clothes, or cloaks, with their swords hung (around their necks). Most of them, nay, all of them, belonged to the tribe of Mudar. The colour of the face of the Messenger of Allah (s) underwent a change when he saw them in poverty. He then entered (his house) and came out and commanded Bilal (to pronounce Adhan). He pronounced Adhan and Iqima, and he (the Holy Prophet) observed prayer (along with his Companion) and then addressed (them reciting verses of the Holy Qur’an): ‘” 0 people, fear your Lord, Who created you from a single being” to the end of the verse,” Allah is ever a Watcher over you” (iv. 1). (He then recited) a verse of Sura Hashr:” Fear Allah. and let every soul consider that which it sends forth for the morrow and fear Allah” (lix. 18). (Then the audience began to vie with one another in giving charity.) Some donated a dinar, others a dirham, still others clothes, some donated a sa’ of wheat, some a sa’ of dates; till he (the Holy Prophet) said: (Bring) even if it is half a date. Then a person from among the Ansar came there with a money bag which his hands could scarcely lift; in fact, they could not (lift). Then the people followed continuously, till I saw two heaps of eatables and clothes, and I saw the face of the Messenger(s) glistening, like gold (on account of joy). The Messenger of Allah (s) said: He who sets a good precedent in Islam, there is a reward for him for this (act of goodness) and reward of that also who acted according to it subsequently, without any deduction from their rewards; and he who sets in Islam an evil precedent, there is upon him the burden of that, and the burden of him also who acted upon it subsequently, without any deduction from their burden. [Sahih Muslim 1017] As Muslims we must support and respect the rights of those who need our help, in this case, desperate refugees. That means we must not be silent on this matter. We must speak up and lobby our political representatives to be generous in their response, for we live in a wealthy and civilized country. The author is a prominent Australian Muslim scholar and activist.

EVERYONE’S READING HIM COMPETITION‫‏‬

By Zuleyha Keskin

Islamic Sciences and Research Academy of Australia (ISRA) organised the “Everyone’s Reading Him Competition” where participants had to read a set text on the light of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) after which they had to sit for a test to demonstrate their knowledge of the Prophet’s life. The competition was embraced by the Muslim community with 1,240 participants registering for the competition. The competition comprised of three categories; primary, high school and adult category. While the exam was hosted by Sirius College, Australian International Academy (King Khalid) and Maarefa College, there were

participants from 33 different schools across Melbourne and 9 venues hosting the exam. The ISRA course coordinator, Zuleyha Keskin, commented on the response received for the competition: “I was pleasantly surprised by the response we got. I honestly was not expecting so many registrations.” Zuleyha further reflected, “It was heart-warming to see so many people engaged with reading about the life of the Prophet (pbuh) - from the age of 7 to 70.” Waeza Mahomed-Osman took part in the competition. “I learned so much about Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) as a result of this competition” explained Waeza. “Because my husband and son also took part, we were having many meaningful conversations

From left: Samira Zeno ,Jessie Smith On the 5th of September, 2015, the Muslim Legal Network held its event “Anti-Terror Laws & Their Impact” at Victoria University. The interactive forum explored a range of issues and factors that concern the current laws relating to antiterrorism. The event featured several prominent speakers, including Ms Jessie Smith (Lawyer of Harun Causevic from Stary Norton Halphen Criminal Law Specialists) who reflected on the anti-terror laws, who is targeted by them and why. Ms Hanan Dover (Forensic Psychologist and Community representative) delivered a compelling speech about some of the individuals unfairly accused of terrorism-related offences and their perspectives. She also suggested ways in which the community can take a stand against unprofessional or inappropriate conduct by the

Mr Ghaith Krayem (President of Islamic Council of Victoria) gave an engaging and powerful speech addressing the socio-political factors surrounding the anti-terror laws. He also discussed the government’s overreach in relation to anti-terrorism laws and the disregard that they have displayed for the rule of law. Samira Zeno (Principal Solicitor at Zeno Lawyers) addressed the proposed changes to the citizenship laws. She urged the community to take action and raised important issues that have not been properly considered by Parliament. Dr Helen Forbes-Mewett (Sociologist and lecturer) broke down the direct impact of the antiterror laws on the wider community and discussed her experiences in the anti-terror climate as a non-Muslim Australian. Each of the speakers provided their valuable insight and

Crime Stoppers NSW Deletes Facebook Post Friday, 3 September 2015 On 19th August Crime Stoppers NSW posted a “Wanted” notice on its Facebook page for a man in connection with the crime of organised car re-birthing. JMA wrote to the organisation about some of the comments that were posted by readers in response to the notice. Comments included “Shoot him”; “It so happens the majority of the criminals these days appear to be middle eastern muslims”; “Always shifty Arabs” and “Funny they’re always ‘Middle Eastern’...he’s probably hiding under his wife’s hijab..” JMA indicated that comments like these may be in breach of racial and religious vilification regulations and also incited to violence. Crime Stoppers NSW subsequently agreed to delete the post and is yet to outline to JMA its procedure for reviewing comments and removing ones that are offensive.

discussed the context for the various changes that have impacted Muslim and non-Muslim Australians This event was highly interactive and aimed to educate and empower. Members of the audience voiced their concerns. The audience also asked our panel members questions to clarify issues that they did not fully understand. Each of the speakers articulately delivered their perspectives and responded to questions as they encouraged community leaders and ordinary Australians to take a stand for truth, equity, justice and peace. The event offered beneficial information and an awareness of how these laws impact our rights as Australians.

AUTHOR: NAILA AHMED, Intern, Muslim Legal Network

This month’s Legal Corner will be looking at a recent and very notable U.S. Supreme Court case called Zivotofsky v Kerry, where the U.S. Supreme Court court struck down a law which allowed US citizens born in Jerusalem, to list “Israel” as their country of birth in their passports. Now, the facts. Shortly after his birth in Jerusalem in 2002, Menachem Zivotofsky’s parents applied for a U.S. passport for their son. Zivotofsky’s parents, both U.S. citizens exercised their right under a U.S. 2002 law to ask the U.S. State Department to designate “Israel” as Menachem’s place of birth. The State Department turned down the family’s request: it explained that, notwithstanding the 2002 law, the U.S. government had a decades-old policy of not recognizing any country as having sovereignty over the holy city of Jerusalem. The Zivotofskys went to court to challenge that decision, kicking off a campaign that would last almost thirteen years. The Supreme Court agreed that the 2002 law was unconstitutional because it conflicts with the president’s “consistent decision” not to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel. Since 1948, the United States has declined to recognize any country as having sovereignty over Jerusalem. But in 2002, Congress passed a law (see below) that instructed the Secretary of State, upon request, to list the birthplace of a U.S. citizen born in Jerusalem as “Israel” on his passport. President George W. Bush signed the law, but at the same time he issued a statement – known as a “signing statement” – in which he protested that the law “interferes with the President’s constitutional authority to conduct the Nation’s foreign affairs and to supervise the . . . executive branch.” Section 214(d) of the Foreign Relations Act provides that “for the purposes of the registration of birth, certification of nationality, or issuance of a passport of a United States citizen born in the city of Jerusalem,” the Secretary of State “shall, upon the request of the citizen or the citizen’s legal guardian, record the place of birth as Israel.” A number of parties argued that the law discriminates against Palestinian-Americans because the law “allows American citizens born in Jerusalem to put ‘Israel’ as their place of birth on their passport, while not allowing Palestinian-Americans born in Jerusalem to put Palestine as their place of birth on their passport.” A number of local Jewish group also took a position in support of the administration. True Torah Jews filed an amicus brief on behalf of Satmars and other non-Zionist Jews, where they argued that “the court should dismiss the case on procedural grounds: the petitioner (the Zivotofskys) has suffered no cognizable ‘injury in fact’ from the fact that the passport does not say ‘Israel’ and therefore has no standing to sue” under the US constitution. The Satmars are the largest group of Ultra-Orthodox (Hasidic) Jews in the United States. They adopt a fiercely anti-Zionist position rooted in their religious belief that the creation of a worldly “Jewish state” in the absence of the messiah is a blasphemy. They hold the view that Zionism is largely responsible for present-day hostility towards Jews. Satmar leaders strictly forbid their followers from taking any money from the Israeli state, unlike other Hasidic sects that are represented in the Israeli parliament and bargain for Israeli government subsidies in exchange for political support. The actual hearing for the case ended on a somber note, with one of the Supreme Court judges, Justice Kagan noting that “history suggests that everything is a big deal with respect to the status of Jerusalem. And right now,” she continued, “Jerusalem is a tinderbox because of issues about the status of and access to a particularly holy site there. And so . . . everything matters, doesn’t it?” The U.S. Supreme Court decision is a common sense one, and accords with global norms, in that no country recognizes Israel’s sovereignty over Jerusalem, which is why even states that recognize Israel all place their embassies in Tel Aviv, and no Jerusalem. Further, the UN Security Council has decreed repeatedly moreover that Israel’s purported annexation of East Jerusalem after 1967 is null and void. Till next time, Masalama. Eid al Adha It is a pleasure to send my greetings to Al Wasat readers during this auspicious time of Eid al Adha. Eid al Adha is one of the most important festivals on the Islamic calendar and recalls Abraham’s test of obedience after being ordered to sacrifice his son. This is a time of faith, prayer and charity, as the sacrificial feast feeds both the family and the needy. We are fortunate to live in a harmonious society and the NSW Government remains committed to maintaining peace in our multicultural society and I welcome initiatives from the State’s Muslim community that promote interfaith understanding. The Islamic Museum of Australia was pleased to welcome museum enthusiasts, community members and the exhibition sponsors to the official launch on Friday 4th September for the IMA’s latest exhibition “Al Asma - Al Husna - The Most Beautiful Names of Allah”. The museum Founder and Director, Mr Moustafa Fahour OAM, spoke passionately to the capacity audience about the significance of the IMA’s capacity to contribute to the education and culture of Australia. The IMA plays an important role in sharing the history, culture and faith of Muslims, both here and abroad through the arts and education The exhibition opening attracted guests from all faith backgrounds and cultures, reflecting Mr Fahour’s sentiment of our diverse communities coming together as a family and the museum being a wonderful space for engagement between cultures and faiths. Mr Fahour invited Professor Abdullah Saeed AM, Director of the National Centre of Excellence for Islamic Studies, University of Melbourne and Director of the IMA to present the key note address. Professor Saeed spoke eloquently, providing both a background to the 99 Names and a point of connection for the audience in terms of the way in which these most beautiful Names relate to our everyday existence. By bringing to life the attributes and signs by which Muslims recognize the wonderment of God, through the beauty of calligraphy, art and sound, a greater understanding about Islam can be shared. The exhibition is both informative and intuitive, featuring the stunning contemporary works by local and international artists which delighted the guests, with many positive responses. The exhibition showcases the 99 Most Beautiful Names of Allah hand scribed in traditional naskh calligraphy by local calligrapher and graffiti artist Shakeel Tariq, directly onto the gallery walls, whilst the centre of the gallery is dominated by a stunning installation titled

IS A SHIFT IN OPINION OCCURRING? The sudden removal of the extreme right Prime Minister in Australia, met with sighs of approval from across the embarrassed nation, appears to fit with several signs of change occurring across the world. In the United States a buffoon, relegated to the entertainment pages of Huffington Post, is top rating amongst Republican Party contenders for the presidential nomination. A proudly racist, xenophobic dinosaur may well represent his party in the presidential Bilal Cleland election. On the Democratic Party trail, Bernie Sanders, a populist with ilal42@bigpond.com a very democratic, anti-austerity approach, may well outmaneuver the well known but not widely trusted Hilary Clinton. In Britain the anti-austerity, anti-war candidate for the leadership of the Labour Party, Jeremy Corbyn, romped home. Murdoch, otherwise known as Lord Moloch, was outraged as was Tony Blair, famous for his obeisance to George Bush in the invasion of Iraq. In Spain and in Greece anti-austerity parties are very strong, although beset by troubles. In Japan the Abe government has gone further to the right, introducing a law which will permit its troops to be used in overseas conflicts for the first time since the Second World War. Asia has terrible memories of the Japanese armies and the Philippines, Korea and China, which suffered terribly under them, are responding negatively. There have been massive anti-war demonstrations in Japan, but they have been ignored, just as our massive demonstrations against the invasion of Iraq in 2003 were ignored. Asia will not be the same again. The situation in the Middle East is appalling. The bloodshed inaugurated by the 2003 invasion of Iraq has not ceased and Daesh/ ISIS, with its military backbone of Iraqi Ba’ath party generals, is not being defeated despite positive reporting from the Pentagon. The lies of these reports has just been exposed and Australian intervention, part of a political use of the armed forces, is almost certainly going to be ineffective. If it has any effect it will be to strengthen the Assad government which cannot be attacked under international law. That government is responsible for 250,000 deaths, more than those attributed to the non-government terrorists. Despite the confusion and spin, the nature of the conflict is being widely understood due to the existence of non-corporate media The engine of change in this situation may be the flood of desperate refugees flocking to Europe. 95% of Syrian refugees have sought safety in Jordan, Turkey, Lebanon, Iraq and Egypt but the thousands heading to Germany and Sweden have created a crisis for the European Union. Despite opposition from within, Angela Merkel has opened Germany to hundreds of thousands. Sweden is offering permanent residence to Syrians. Hungary, with a very right wing Prime Minister, has put up a fence to stop them entering his country, reminding the world of the Arrow Cross in Hungary and its deportation of Jews to Nazi death camps 70 years ago. The United States, which enthusiastically invaded in 2003, thus bringing about the present horrors, is taking minimal numbers, as is the UK, which was a particularly enthusiastic participant in the invasion. Australia under Howard, was also very gung-ho about attacking Saddam with its allies but it was very reluctant to take refugees from the present conflict. 12,000 refugee places had to be wrung out of former PM Abbott. Any Syrians in our offshore detention camps will be left there. This has opened many eyes amongst the citizens of those nations and contributes to the decline in their former prestige.. The obviously disastrous Middle East policies of the Americans and their allies, the growing involvement of Russia in Syria and the contradictory policy regarding Iran, make for a very uncertain future. The refugee crisis now impacting upon the European heartland, which may bring about major political changes, suggest the world post-2003 will be a very different one from the last century. Fascists are still present but are a rump composed of the intellectually challenged, insignificant compared to what arose 80 years ago. Rising levels of education, easily available news and rapid methods of communication make secrecy very short-lived. Heroes like Assange and Snowden, and Chelsea Manning, martyrs of corporate and military attempts at hiding truth from their master, the people, make the hiding of major crimes very fraught. The existence of the International Criminal Court hangs over the heads of political warlords and corrupt manipulators. Although the present situation appears very threatening, perhaps frightening, the trends we see in the freest societies, those which have some semblance of democracy and mass participation protected by law, are positive. The enemies of freedom and democracy are very afraid.

IN THE NAME OF ALLAH, THE MOST BENEFICENT, THE MOST MERCIFUL Assalaamu Alaikum I write this message with a heavy heart, the hardship and tragedy confronting thousands of refugees from Syria and Iraq is wake up call for all of us to do more to help alleviate the suffering of so many. We are pleased on one hand by our government’s stance to increase the intake of refugees from the region by 12,000.00 However, on the other hand, the government has qualified the intake according to religious grounds and such a policy does not auger well, those seeking refuge should not be targeted according to their religious beliefs. When you’re suffering and in pain and seeking refuge your belief system should not be a criteria for acceptance or rejection. We welcome the month of Dhul Hijja, the month of Hajj - pilgrimage, one of the pillars of Islam. We have been saddened to observe pictures of the tragic collapse of the crane at the Grand Mosque in Mecca due to unprecedented strong winds and rains. The loss of life and injury as a result is heartfelt. May Allah SWT ease the pain and suffering of the injured and grant patience and forbearance to those who have lost loved ones in this tragedy. AFIC HISTORY In 1963 the Australian Muslim community adopted an organisational structure for the cause of Islam in Australia. At the grass roots level local Muslims formed Islamic Societies to serve their basic needs in terms of education and prayer facilities. The building of Mosques and providing religious education became the primary objective. The Islamic Councils of each State and Territory united to form State Islamic Councils representing their respective Muslim communities at the peak State level. At the national level the State and Territory Islamic Councils formed the Australian Federation of Islamic Councils Inc (AFIC), as the national umbrella organisation for Australian Muslims representing Islam and Muslims at a national and international level. AFIC has its head office in Sydney with branch offices in Melbourne.

Will Turnbull steer Australia towards an Inclusive Democracy? By Bilal Cleland The removal by the Liberal Party room of Prime Minister Abbott by a large majority of members was welcomed across the nation. The usual shock jocks and rabid columnists shed tears, regretting the passing of the most right-wing leader Australia has ever experienced, but they were few and very isolated. He leaves behind a disastrous legacy which will now have to be dealt with by the new leader, Malcolm Turnbull, who enjoys considerable support in the Muslim community. We acknowledge the inclusive attitude taken by Prime Minister Turnbull in his considered discussion of Islam on Q&A and look to him for a strong stand in support of our multicultural democracy. We expect that the party will move away from the extreme position of the past towards one more acceptable to the electorate. Many of us see the growth of anti-Muslim organisations like Reclaim Australia and the United Patriots as a result of divisive political leadership. The Muslim community remembers an earlier period of growing anti-Muslim bigotry. It was short-circuited by the Prime Minister on January 14 1991 and then the Governor General in his Australia

Day Message, issuing statements against the harassment of Australian Arabs and Australian Muslims. The stand of the national leadership resulted in a complete change of atmosphere. We look for such a stand from our new Prime Minister. That was not forthcoming from Prime Minister Abbott. The new look Liberal Party is welcome but there are many policies which are cause for concern. They include the attitude to asylum seekers, the new citizenship laws which could result in permanent incarceration on Christmas Island, the direction of tax reform and changes to education. We are concerned at the promotion of Scott Morrison to Treasurer as we remember the attitudes he expressed in 2011 party discussions. It has not been forgotten that he urged the shadow cabinet to use the electorate’s growing concerns about “Muslim immigration”, “Muslims in Australia” and the “inability” of Muslim migrants to integrate as part of its election strategy. It is hoped that the new direction which will occur under the leadership of Prime Minister Turnbull will take the government away from such divisive policies and contribute to a safer, less xenophobic Australia.

The ICV and the Muslim communities of Victoria would like to recognise and pay respect to the first Australians and acknowledge the important role Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people continue to play in building a vibrant nation.
