Alyssa Alegre Academic Coordinator Welcome Good Evening friends, family, faculty, staff, and community members! Thank you all for attending our 25th annual Filipino Graduation. It is a privilege and honor to be able to put on this ceremony for our Filipino community at SDSU. And after all the years we’ve hosted this ceremony, this year we have broken a unprecedented record of participating graduates with 50 of them in attendance today. The purpose of Filipino Graduation is to create a more intimate space for graduates and family members to celebrate their journey through higher education. It is also an opportunity for graduates to express their gratitude for their loved ones and an opportunity to recognize everyone who helped them get to this point in their lives. The overall college completion rate for Filipino students at this institution is 34% of our community in 4 years, 64% in 5, and 72% in 6. No matter how long it may have taken Today you are graduating. You are off on wild adventures. Allow your perspective to shift, and shift again. You are in a continuous process of becoming. You are already building the world around you, just as you are always building who you are. Because what’s more important than just having a dream, is having the ambition to reach them. Be ambitious and enthusiastic in whatever you do. Always strive for more in and outside of your career. You’ll be surprised at where that might lead you. Even strong enthusiasm toward something is a challenge for some, but it can transform your life. I wish you courage. I wish you joy. I wish you adventures and mistakes to learn from. I know you will build us a world that we will all be excited to see. Thank you and congratulations! Alyssa Alegre
 Academic Coordinator 2017-2018

Kirsten Manahan Chairperson Welcome Good evening and welcome to all! On behalf of Andres Bonifacio Samahan at San Diego State University, we would like to thank everyone in attendance of our ceremony tonight. Filipino Graduation has been hosted by our organization since 1993, and for those past 25 years, we have been honored with the privilege to celebrate the achievements of the participating graduates. To our graduates, I would like to extend my warmest congratulations from the bottom of my heart. I am sure the journey must not have been easy, but nonetheless, each of you battled through the endless nights of studying, copious cups of coffee, and skipped meals due to lack of funds to get to where you are now. Whether or not you feel ready to take on what awaits you after graduation, you should all be very proud of what you have achieved thus far. Having the commitment, determination, and discipline needed to earn a degree speaks a great deal to your character, and that in and of itself is an accomplishment alone. As you step out into the world as a new SDSU graduate, continue to take risks and step out of your comfort zone, but most importantly, never stop learning. You are always a student and there is always more for you to learn. To the families of our graduates,

Congratulations to you all, as well. Out of this institute has emerged a more enlightened and cultivated individual you can be proud to call your kin. Thank you for your support and encouragement, as they have played an integral part in the success of your graduate. With that, it is with high hopes that we send these graduates off into the world. Enjoy your evening and best wishes to all! Best regards,
 Kirsten Manahan
 Chairperson #46

Sorry to disappoint you mom and dad, haha! Upon graduation, I have also been fortunate enough to obtain a job as a Behavioral Therapist where I am concurrently working on obtaining my Registered Behavioral Technician License. THANK YOU’S: I would like to thank God, my parents, family and friends. I wouldn’t be the person I am today, without them. I would like to mention my mentors throughout my college career, Julius Alejandro and Lauren Garces. My resume would be half as empty if it weren’t for those two. Professor Gallozzi for helping find my passion and being the strong woman we all need in this field. Lastly, I would like to thank AB-Samahan for being my stepping stone. I remember being a freshman at GBMs scared and not knowing what to do in college. This organization helped me branch out of my comfort zone and find a name for myself.

FAVORITE MEMORY: It was the first day of junior year. Professor Gallozzi was showing us an acapella video of the song, “Africa” by Toto. I had a rough summer that year and I didn’t feel confident bringing it into the new school year. The crescendo peaked and a burst of salvation came over me. It was in that seat that I made the decision to leave an unhealthy relationship that I buried myself in. I left the old me in that classroom, the one who let her problems defined her. She is not here anymore. I have been given a second chance to rise up from the past, and trust me when I say, I am not done. That was my favorite day.

And I’ll never forget spending hours at the apartment watching TV as a family (Nurse Jackie, Boku no Hero Academia, Fresh Off the Boat, Rick and Morty, etc.), all chipping in for pizza delivery, movie outings, overly violent pillow fights, and babysitting Popperino. I’ll especially never forget Alex, who I wish could have been here today.

I’d like to thank my brother AJ for driving me all over kingdom come, my brother Justin for showing me what a hot mess student looks like and unwittingly teaching me that I can always strive to be better, and my dog Monte for being so small yet so angry. I’d also like to thank Grandpa, Grandma, Mom, and Papa for the unconditional care and support they’ve provided for me my entire life, as well as all my aunts, uncles, and cousins who have helped to build the strong familial support system I have behind me today. Majoring in marketing and integrated marketing communications has allowed me to find these opportunities and I'm so thankful to have chosen this as my career path! THANK YOU’S: I would first like to thank God for always being there to listen and giving me the strength to finish, guiding me to where I am now. I would have never been able to get through finals in one piece without his cuddles, warm welcomes, and emotional support. I am especially grateful to my understanding parents, who continually support me in all of my pursuits and supplying me with their words of wisdom, laughter, gas money, and snacks. THANK YOU’S: Dear Mom and Dad, Thank you for loving and supporting me unconditionally. The three of us went through a lot during my time in college. Despite all the challenges we've been through, I'm happy we were able to overcome them and I'm really happy with where we are as a family right now. I only look forward to growing together and getting closer as a family from now on. I love you both so much, I hope I made you proud. Dear LLS, You two are the most craziest and lovable cousins I could ever ask for. I'm so glad that we can fangirl with each other over the nerdiest and dumb things and just go on. To the people I've grown closer to in AB Samahan, Y'all have no idea how much of a huge difference you've made in my life. I was in a dark place when I first joined the organization and meeting and getting to know all of you made my world bright again. I honestly didn't expect to be so involved to the point where I became an executive board member--I only did it because I wanted to give back to AB Samahan. FAVORITE CLASS: PolS 334 - Politics of the Environment FAVORITE MEMORY: I've made so many wonderful memories during my time here at SDSU, especially the ones while being a part of AB Samahan. If I had to choose one memory to reflect on, it would be when I performed in my first Filipino Culture Night last year. I originally signed up to be a dancer but was eventually given the opportunity to sing and act as Nurse Maritess--more affectionately known as Nars--for "Running Out of Time.” All the rehearsals and late nights spent in preparation for the production contributed to my "cultural connection." From learning traditional dances to learning about Filipino-American history, I've become inspired to learn more and stay connected to my roots. FCN was one of the most impacting events that helped enrich my time here at SDSU. Even though I told myself that I wouldn't participate in FCN's "Lola" earlier this semester, I found myself being sucked into the production once more. Can you blame me though, I did it for the culture!
