LTG LETTER

What's Up Hedgehogs

Welcome to the February edition of our newsletter! There are some major developments going on and we're glad that you're here for another month filled with updates + fun. We’re at the start of another year filled with wonders and possibilities. This month, we hope to take you all through the cosmos as we start our division activities post-winter break. From election season, recognition awards, and a newly elected Lieutenant Governor coming soon, we hope you’re all excited to begin anew. As we go into these once in a lifetime events, please remember to reach out at any time if you have any questions either your current officers or myself can help! On a final note, I want to congratulate everyone again for their dedication to serving during the past year. There were many twists and turns keeping us from leading a normal term, but you all continue to surprise me in the best way possible and I couldn’t be more grateful to be leading this division at this moment. Continue to be optimistic, taking care of yourself and those around you in the process, and I hope to see you all once again at our first couple of events of the new year. Thank you and I hope you enjoy this month’s astronomical issue of our division’s newsletter. Rolling to Service,

Javier Nunez Division 13 West 2020-2021 Lt. Governor

KIWANIS FOUNDATION

The Kiwanis Children’s Fund is the extension of the Kiwanis impact. The Kiwanis Children’s Fund partners with clubs and districts in all Kiwanis nations to help children of the world through Kiwanis-led service projects that promote: healthy children, educated children, leadership development, and priority children’s issues. The mission statement is to develop resources that transform the good will and vision of Kiwanians into programs that serve the children of the world.

SERVICE IDEAS PTP DOLLS

LEIMAKING

Create PTP dolls at a Kiwanis meeting. Buy the necessary materials to make the dolls. Afterwards, donate the dolls to a local hospital for kids.

Recognize outstanding Kiwanians in your sponsoring Kiwanis clubs by giving them ribbon leis. Work with club members to make leis and collect them when finished. Then drop off the leis to the Kiwanians.

FUNDRAISING IDEAS BOOK SALE

TRIVIA GAMES

Have members in the club donate books that they don't read anymore. Make sure to check if they are in good condition. Use the money raised to help charter a nearby Builder's Club with the help of the Kiwanians.

Create Trivia questions about Key Club that Kiwanians can answer. Create groups of Kiwanians. If a group answers a question wrong, each person will have to donate a $1. After the trivia, donate the money to UNICEF or other charities.

CLUB ELECTIONS why care?

what positions are there

As a member and/or potential future officer, picking your club's next board is important in making sure the club is led by the people who can help it thrive the most for the following term

PRESIDENT

BEE-ing an officer means taking initiative, helping offer new ideas for the club, and ultimately bonding more with your members.

VICE PRESIDENT

can I run? YES! Just BEE a current dues-paid member of your home club and have the wish to run. Here are some tips to help you prepare for your club election: Know what positions your club is offering and learn about the roles/duties from past/current officers Use the CNH Cyberkey or go to tinyurl.com/d13welections for more resources Prepare your campaign speech and BEE ready to answer some basic questions about why you wish to be an officer

are there any changes The only change is that clubs MUST hold their elections virtually Only exception is if the club is already meeting IN-PERSON (not recommended

to elections this year?

The president helps LEAD the club in service and ohana, delegates tasks, and communicates with members + officers

The VP is the second-in-command, helping the president and other board members when needed. In the absence of the president, the VP takes initiative and helps lead the group

SECRETARY The Secretary is in charge of tracking service hours, taking meeting minutes, and working with the Treasurer to update the member roster

TREASURER The treasurer helps create a club budget, plan fundraisers, record transactions + expenses, and works with the Secretary

EDITORS Editors (Historians, News, and Tech) work to keep the club updated through graphics and technology

other potential positions CLASS REPRESENTATIVES Class Reps can be used to strengthen the bonds between individual grade levels and the club. Help communicate the concerns of their grade to the core board

FIRST KIWANIS MEETING OF THE NEW YEAR

Maya Henry Historian | GALA On January 11th, 2021, from 7:30 to 8:30 PM, the Kiwanis Board held the

first Kiwanis meeting of 2021! Though GALA was still technically on Winter Break, officers encouraged Key Club members to attend nevertheless, and six did! The meeting highlighted important information about upcoming events, food drives, and deadlines, and it was a great opportunity for GALA to get ideas for service events from other schools. Thanks to the input of the Kiwanis, it’s been decided that GALA Key Club elections will be held sometime between late February and mid-March, and we’re so excited to introduce new officers to the Kiwanis Board then! Katie Perez Historian | King Drew The December DCM with Division 13th South, Division 13th North and Division 13th West took place December 19th. Throughout the DCM each division recognized a member for there hard work. Also, each division talked about the process towards their term goals. I attend this DCM and I had a wonderful experience meeting new people. My favorite part was getting into break out rooms and playing games. I would encourage others to take part of these DCM’s because they would enjoy themselves so much.

RECOGNITION

CONTESTS

Simon Zhong Historian | Downtown Magnets High Unfortunately there isn’t very much to discuss about this month considering that we were on break for the past month. But I’m happy to announce that the division 13 west member recognition contest is happening and ongoing until January 22. So if you want to apply, please do so soon!

STICKER

COLLABORATION

Mikaela Dinh | Division News Editor On January 1st, Division 37 North, Division 03 South, and Division 13 West launched our sticker collaboration. Each division has a certain design that fits the winter theme and has a collaborative sticker. The collaborative sticker will be $4 while the individual division stickers will be $3. The money that we will raise will go towards our PTP goal for the division. Orders were taken from January 1st to January 8th.

CNH ELECTIONS WEBINAR Javier Nunez |LtG On December 20th, the CNH Policy, International Business, and Elections Committee held a virtual elections webinar to educate the membership of the entire District on election procedures and the various officer roles that members can strive for. We had almost 600+ members in attendance, eager to learn and all having no trouble meeting members from across the Cali-Nev-Ha through the Zoom chat. Many Lt. Governors took charge and presented on a variety of topics from virtual election procedures to running for International. I personally enjoyed the enthusiasm from the members in attendance during our talk about Division Leadership Team positions. All in all, the event lasted for two hours and I have to give major props to my committee for being able to work so efficiently behind the scenes weeks prior to the webinar to make the final product run so smoothly. I have high hopes for the future of Division 13 West and the CNH District if even half of the attendees at December’s webinar decide to run for officer positions in their respective clubs. Thank you to PIE Chair Ilene for giving me and the other members of PIE committee the chance to present in front of the entire District, providing for our hive’s future in the long term.
