Sustainable Development
H
Group E: Jack, Rui-Wen, Kent umanity now stands at a defining moment in history. Over 7 billion people live on earth, our only dwelling planet in the universe so far with an estimated increase of at least a billion people in the following decades. Enormous human population leads to perpetual hardships including food shortage, water scarcity and a worsening of poverty between and within nations. Confronted with an extremely challenging future, humans introduced the idea of sustainability. Sustainable development, which aims to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs, shall ensure humanity s chances for survival as well as a more prosperous future. In 1972, the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment was held in Stockholm, Sweden. The industrialized and developing

nations were brought together in an effort to determine the rights of the human family to a healthy and productive environment. Their ensuing effort led to the adoption of Agenda 21 at the first UN Conference on Environment and Development (UNCED) in 1972. This agenda became a significant landmark in the history of human development. Twenty years later, after the third Earth Summit Rio+20, the sustainable development has become the doctrine of almost every system and organization. Having recognized the increasing risk from the developing society, we carry the responsibility to prepare Mother Nature for the challenges in the future. The theme of AM 2014 is Sustainable Development for the New Era , and the two topics covered are Sustainable Healthcare and Sustainable Environment. In the spirit of global partnership, we are inviting you to join us in building a more sustainable society at AM2014.

1. Rights and Discrimination In 2002, Madrid International Plan of Action on Aging(MIPAA), a report of the Second World Assembly on Ageing, proposed three directions : developing long-term care systems, advancing health and well-being into old age, and ensuring supportive environments, which led the course of thinking and action on ageing into a new era. Even though people around the world have put much effort on the rights of the aged, there are still several challenges, including the discrimination against the elderly. Ageism, a

target levels in 1994, shifting institutionalized care to community-based care. Health is not the only aspect in elder welfare. Elders should be able to work without discrimination. In the United States, with the legislation of Age Discrimination Elimination Act in 1967, the working rights of the elders is protected. The Act forbids age limitation in the processes of recruiting employees, making its environment friendly for the elders.
3. On the other Hand ‒The Dilemma We Face
“Age of the Aged”
term which describes the stereotypic and negative bias against older adults, was first coined by Robert Neil Butler in 1969. Any attitude, actions, or institutional structures which subordinate people according to their age will impair the full range of human rights. Nevertheless, ageism truly exists, no matter being noticed or not.
2. What did our governments do? There are a variety of elder policies proposed in each country. For example, the legislation of Long-term Care Service Bill in 2014 was a milestone in the Taiwanese caring system. Besides Taiwan, Japan launched the Gold Plan in 1989, which was revised with raising
The promotion of the right of the elderly has raised economic and financial concerns. On the economic side, the fast aging popularity causes the dependency ratio to soar rapidly. Moreover, the lowering consumer s purchasing power caused by aging has a negative effect on macroeconomic. On the financial side, the fast aging rate has made the welfare policies much more difficult to be implemented and sustained. The Funded pension system can decrease government spending, helping financial and capital markets grow. However, there could be political and economic risks lurking behind, and hence there is still room for improvement.

8/10 Currently, people in the whole world strive to put more emphasis on eliminating health inequity, advocating health promotion activities, and understanding social determinants of health. As medical students, we need to learn how to communicate and cooperate with public health experts, governments, and public. We should no longer rely solely on medical treatment to cure disease, but to be advocators of health promotion. Besides, basing on the professional field of hospitals, we should promote value-adding healthcare − not only cure the disease, but also prevent, protect and elevate people s health!

The sustainability of long term care system
In recent years, world populations of the elderly has been steadily rising, and as demand soars, the prevention of Long Term Care (LTC) system overload will become pressing concerns for any aging society. However, LTC is not merely a medical concern. Other problems of lawmaking, fairness, accessibility, manpower distribution, social insurance, and caregiver rights all pose poignant questions with no definite answers. For this Theme Event, we have invited two Taiwanese experts of LTC to share their knowledge, experience, and insight.
