Being certificated by the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Platinum in 2011, Taipei 101 is now the highest and largest green building in the world. There are 6 principles in Taipei 101, abbreviated as “ TAIPEI”: Technology, Art, Innovation, People, Environment, and Identity. Observatory Visit Jui-Hui Peng, Yu-An Chen What is a visit to Taipei without looking off from the highest point in the entire city? Like a beacon raised to the air, Taipei 101 dwarfs even the surrounding hills and mountains of the Taipei basin, and there is no place like the 101 observatory to admire the jewel of Taiwan from a whole new angle! On Friday, we were excited to have many delegates join us in experiencing the fantastic vista which the observatory had to offer. Boasting the fastest elevators in service, at mind-boggling vertical

Additionally, on the first floor of Taipei 101, there is a ”Green Corner” containing multi-touch screen promotion Green On project at the “Green Corner”. Saving energy by replacement of LED light and water by recycling rain water are achievements from this project a s w e l l . M e a n w h i l e , t h e Tr a s h Processing Center down at the B2nd floor contributes to the material recycling process, decreasing the recycling rate at the number of 70 percent. Besides, in order to avoid secondary pollution, pesticides and chemicals is prohibited for the maintenance work of the nearby Chung Keung Park adopted by Taipei 101. There are also websites set up to arouse the public environmental consciousness. Then we moved on to the 24-hourly worked Central Control Room, where the guide introduced the electricity system, illumination system, air-conditioning system, rainwater system, and elevator s y s t e m o f t h e Ta i p e i 1 0 1 . T h e
electricity of Taipei 101 is provided by a double-circuit system from two transformer substations. The illumination system is mainly used to monitor the public area, emergency circuits and outdoor illumination, which is peculiar for its seven colors varying with the seven days of a week. The airconditioning system aims to reduce the energy needs by adapting to the temperatures, humidity, and carbon dioxide concentration so as to comply with the standard of LEED, a green building certification program recognizing best-in-class building strategies and practices. As for the operation of elevator system, it is divided into odd-number and even-number floors to improve efficiency of the elevator shift and reduce the energy consumption. Last but not least, do you know how many people work in Taipei 101 every day? About 11 thousand people! We appreciate all the tenants and employees to give us the extraordinary guide.

With the aid of this special machine, we are able to collect the data of the pulse and use the Fourier transform to help us have a deeper understanding of these data. By analyzing the frequency, amplitude and the waveform of the pulse, we’ll be able to “read out” the condition of our body. For example, healthier people would have a stronger and more continuous pulse wave. The information was brought to us by the process of “feeling the pulse” in the past, and with the help of this machine, it will be much easier to visualize the results of this diagnosis. The Green Exhibition consists of displays that can be roughly divided into two categories – one that promotes hospital & community health initiatives and the other environmental protection & sustainability. Society of Wilderness attempts to raise public awareness about ecosystem in the park and to make parks a more sufficient place for urban greening. Environment Quality Protection Foundation runs an international project called “Let’s plant trees in Kenya” to improve water conservation, food shortage, etc. Last but not least, Taiwan Youth Climate Coalition’s current project involves mobilizing young generation to explore the rivers and interact with local residents, especially those who have fought for the right to clean water. Finally, a particularly heated topic presented by Taiwan Association for International Care of Organ Transplants is illegal organ transplantation. Harvesting of organs from prisoners of conscience is highlighted as an important issue that already has the attention of UN Human Right High Commissioner.

There hasn't been an event with more traditional games and shows than Taiwan Expo 2014. The participants enjoyed the entertainment, traditional shows, and snacks. Fun was everything about this event! Toss Me a Ring The most popular stand was the ring tossing game where players threw a ring onto a bottle that is about one to two meters away. Does it sound easy? It looks very easy until you try it! There is actually a tip: you hold the ring vertically and toss it so the ring hits the top of the bottle, gets stuck, and falls. Make it Stand You need full concentration and great skills to conquer this challenging game! At the beginning, a bottle is laid down on the floor. What you have to do is to stand it up with a ring tied by a fishing pole, within three chances. Once you got the hang of it, you’ll find it much
easier.Many players eventually succeeded! Give Me a Beat Three Chinese drums brought a vivid vibe to the event. The professional team offered a lesson at the side. They also accepted challenges. You
could even play it like a Jazz drum and have a mini concert. Taiwan Traditional Puppet Show The traditional puppet show is one of Taiwan’s treasures. The show was extraordinary. The audience was surprised when the puppets changed faces and clothes instantly. The audience was then asked to join the master to play with the puppets. “I’ve never tried this before. It’s surely difficult, but it’s special and fun,” said Junaid Muhammad Habib from Nigeria, “and I love the part where we have to move the puppet along with the rhythm!” The entire event reached its climax when the five costumed characters went on to the stage and danced to Gangnam style with the audience. These characters represent one of the Chinese gods in religious parades and we like to use his naughty temperament to interact with the audience. Dhulfigar from Iraq said he had a lot of fun. He was not only a talented dancer, but also a master of the ring tossing game. “The games were fun and challenging, but I did succeed! I especially like the dancing of the costumed characters and the traditional Chinese music,” said Elina Makinen from Finland. Taiwan Expo was much more than what this newspaper can say. There were also pinball, sand bag throwing, Mahjong bingo, beans picking with chopsticks, Chinese medicine experiencing and more!
