TIMING CHAIN SETS FOR SINGLE TO THREE-BOLT CONVERSION Crane Cams LS Series three-bolt design camshafts can be used in single bolt applications with conversion timing chain sets. The LS Series of engines uses a computerized engine management system with trigger sensors for determining both the camshaft and crankshaft position.
These LS1 and LS6 engines can use timing chain set, part number 144984-1.
The triggering points for these sensors are either machined onto or attached to the cam and crankshaft.
Late LS2, LS3, LS7 and L92 engines can use a three-bolt camshaft with timing chain set, part number 144986-1. The upper timing sprocket in this set has four timing features (two short and two long lugs).
The interchangeability of the three bolt design camshaft can be provided by using the proper timing chain set to convert from one year and series engine to another. LS1 and LS6 engines use a three-bolt camshaft with the trigger sensor machines on the rear of the camshaft. The upper timing sprocket has no timing sensor features. There is a reluctor wheel attached to the rear of the crankshaft.
Early LS2 engines can use a three-bolt camshaft with conversion timing chain, part number 144985-1. The upper timing sprocket has one long lug timing feature.
LS1, early LS2 and LS6 engine designs use a camshaft with three bolts to attach the upper timing chain sprocket. These engines also use a 24 tooth reluctor wheel attached crankshaft. Early LS2 uses a special timing chain set for a front cover sensor. See the applications table below.
