LIVING HOUSE COURTYARD LIVING Courtyard Living is a project focused on turning a long thin Carlton block into a contemporary multigenerational house that respects the heritage of the area and enhances the potential connections to nature. The clients wishes for a simple, functional, elegant design were met through the use of humble red brick, modern black steel, polished concrete and timber flooring and elegant glass bricks on the facade. The plans were designed in order to allow for large open plan family spaces, indoor and out, as well as adaptation over the years that would cater for the changing dynamic in a family of two parents, two children and two grandparents.

COURTYARD PERSPECTIVE The spacious courtyard catches the morning sun and is shaded from the harsh western sun. Glass walls on the facades facing the courtyard bring light into the interior spaces that were once very dark. Glass bricks sit under the stair well and draw light into the bathroom, as well as the window adjacent to the garden bed. Built in concrete-timber clad seating creates a platform for various activities to take place and the red brck garden bed allows for the growth of herbs and veggies. An elegant polished concrete bench is extended from the interior kitchen to the outside with a modest BBQ attached.
FACADE PERSPECTIVE The original Edwardian facade of 4 MacArthur Place has been retained, being spruced up with a new layer of paint and some vertial plants. The second storey is set back 4m, in line with the bedroom below and the chimney. Black steel structural members act as the trim around an elegant glass brick front the allows defuse southern light into the most adapatable room. A small private balcony for the master bedroom allows more connection to the outdoors with vertical gardens hanging on the walls. The clerestory windows of the second storey that allow for stack ventilation and light, were set back 900mm for fire safety regulations.

The Carlton Creatives project seeks to bring the commercial, the educational, the residential and the green outdoors, all together in one complex. Focusing on creative artists and thinkers from the Carlton area, the design intervention creates a market space that connects Elgin St, Nicholls Lane and MacArthur Square, via the new Market Lane and activates MacArthur Square on the weekend. The education space will host classes ranging from language, art, history and yoga and special events such as guest speakers and art exhibitions. The residential area is maintained on the old heritage facade side of the site and the roof areas are activated with green roof spaces and garden beds that are used for residents and students.

LIVING NEIGHBOURHOOD MARKET STUDIOS The Market Studios are one person apartments with an ajoined studio/kiosk space that is used for selling products and produce on Market Lane. The design intervention takes the rental capacity of the site from 12 to 22 people. The project aims to intensify the site to include commercial, educational, residential and green outdoor space. The arrangement of stalls and kiosk windows encourages pedestian flow through the site and onto MacArthur Square, activating an underutilised park. When the market closes, the kiosk fronts neatly fold down and lock up to enhance the privacy and security for the occupants at night.

DAY TIME MARKET The day time market is a daily event where stall holders and kiosk renters can trade at normal business hours. Foot traffic from Elgin St is drawn into the new site to explore the this new exciting space. Bright coloured umbrellas make the space pop and the variety of goods for sale is an exiting prospect, with pottery, plants, art, clothing, food, and more. The upper levels of green roof are used by the residents and the students of the educational space.
NIGHT TIME MARKET The night time market operates on Friday and Saturday night, bringing families, artists and musicians together to enjoy fresh food, live music and exhibitions.
