GEO is Australia’s largest private operator of prisons with almost 3,500 prisoners in our care. Our job is to keep the people who are sent to our prisons safe and secure, and also to help them lead lives free of crime when they get out. Our prisons do this through plans, education, work and programs, and also by helping the prisoner get ready for his release. Plans: we sit down with every prisoner and work out a plan that will help the prisoner live a crime-free life when he is released; the plan includes activities that he will do in prison Education: a lot of prisoners need help with their education; we provide courses and training so that the prisoner can get and keep a job Work: we give prisoners jobs to do when in prison either helping around the prison or in one of our industries; prisoners earn a wage and are in a better position to find a job when they get out Programs: a lot of prisoners have problems with drugs, alcohol, short tempers and relationships; we run programs to help them with these problem behaviours Release: the prison helps by getting the prisoner ready for release, and if the prison cannot help it can put the prisoner in touch with those who can GEO encourages prisoners to develop their skills - the storyline and characters for this magazine that you are reading were developed by prisoners at a GEO prison.
