It’s important for all pregnant mums to have regular appointments with your doctor to monitor your pregnancy and the baby’s growth. Part of this will involve screening tests that check on your baby’s health, these may include:
Ultrasound – a way of looking at your unborn baby instead of an X-ray. A waterbased jelly is spread over the mother’s tummy and a device is moved over the skin to produce a picture on a screen (as above). Ultrasounds are used for several reasons including: • To establish the date when the baby is due • To see if there is more than one baby • To monitor the size and development of the baby • To determine the position of the baby and the placenta Blood tests – will provide important information about your health and can highlight any possible problems you might have during your pregnancy. Diet - your doctor, midwife or Aboriginal Health Worker will be able to give you good advice about your dietary requirements during pregnancy. Smoking and Alcohol - smoking increases the risk of miscarriage, low birth weight and Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Foetal Alcohol Spectrum Disorders (FASD) are physical and mental disabilities in children caused by the intake of alcohol while pregnant.
