Alcohol in my life; what are the risks, harms and consequences? How can I stay safe? Many of us will attend parties or other activities where the risk of harm to us or our friends is increased by alcohol. We can have a great time at parties and reduce the risk by planning ahead. Learn the potential risks involved with alcohol use and create a party safe plan with your family and/or friends. “Movie Makers” helps us to think about good choices, risky choices and the possible consequences. We hope you enjoy the comic, created by young people for young people. We have listed some useful information about safe use of alcohol below. How does alcohol affect us? Alcohol is a substance which blocks the messages our brain sends out to the rest of our body, meaning our perception, senses, emotions, movement, speech, vision and hearing is affected - this is why it is important to make plans before we consume alcohol. Australian Guidelines to health risks from drinking alcohol* • For children and young people under 18 years of age, not drinking alcohol is the safest option. • Parents and carers should be advised that children under 15 years of age are at the greatest risk of harm from drinking and that for this age group, not drinking alcohol is especially important. • For young people aged 15–17 years, the safest option is to delay the commencement of drinking alcohol for as long as possible. *National Health and Medical Research Council of Australia http://www.druginfo.adf.org.au/druginfo/drugs/drugfacts/alcohol.html#reducingtherisks Useful websites www.drinkingnightmare.gov.au www.drugs.health.gov.au www.reachout.com.au Thank you to the following contributors in the production of “Movie Makers” Ballarat and District Aboriginal Cooperative, Sebastopol College, City of Ballarat, Victoria Police, and the young people from the focus groups.
