Aboriginal Health Council of South Australia AHCSA is the peak body representing Aboriginal community controlled health and substance misuse services in South Australia at a state and national level. First incorporated in 1981, AHCSA advocated for Aboriginal people in South Australia and supported Aboriginal Health Workers and community controlled health organisations. Over the years, the Council has had many achievements: • Influencing, advocating and assisting the development of six Aboriginal Health Services. • Establishing the Aboriginal Primary Health Care Workers Forum. • Establishing the Aboriginal Health and Research Ethics Committee. • Auspicing training for the Aboriginal Primary Health Care Certificate. • Administering the Commonwealth funded Recruitment Program in South Australia. • Completion of a wide range of other projects. • Supporting various initiatives in research, ethics, education/training and investigations. In March 1999, AHCSA commissioned a strategic review of its operations and identified the need for a peak community voice on Aboriginal health issues in South Australia. To increase the effectiveness and representation of AHCSA, the review recommended that the Council separate from Government and become a community-controlled organisation in its own right. This took effect on 18 October 2001 when the Council re-incorporated under the Associations Incorporation Act.
