We hope this comic encourages Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander young people to look after their health and to have regular health checks to prevent illness. Health Checks Getting a health check helps you stay deadly. By popping in for a regular health check, you can prevent breakdowns before they happen (just like a car service). You can have a health check at any Aboriginal Medical Service or GP (doctor’s) clinic. If you are 16 years or older, you can go by yourself. If you are younger, you may still be able to go by yourself if a doctor thinks you can make important decisions for yourself. If you are too young for this, your parent, guardian or carer will need to go with you. All information that is recorded by staff about you is confidential and will not be shared with anyone else unless you agree to it. The only reason that your information could be shared without your permission is if you or other people are at risk of serious harm. Did you know that having a health check will not cost you anything? But you will need to show a Medicare card or give your Medicare number at the clinic. If you are 15 years or older, you can get your own Medicare card, while people under 15 years can be included on their parents’ or carers’ card. The Medicare card allows you to get either free or discounted visits to a medical clinic. It also helps you with the cost of medicines that a doctor prescribes. If you want to know more, check out www.humanservices.gov.au/customer/services/medicare/medicare-card
