Chlamydia facts ● Chlamydia is the most common sexually transmissible infection (STI) in Australia and is passed on through sex without a condom (unprotected sex). ● The people most usually affected by this sexually transmitted infection (STI) are 15 to 29 year olds. ● Chlamydia is known as a ‘silent infection’ because it often has no signs. ● If left untreated, chlamydia can cause serious problems such as infertility meaning not be able to make babies (males) and not being able to have babies (females). ● Anyone who engages in unprotected sex with another person’s vagina, mouth or bum will be at risk of chlamydia infection. ● Signs of chlamydia may include pain on peeing, an unusual smell or leaking from vagina or penis, and lower tummy pain. ● The only way to find out if you have chlamydia is to visit your doctor or sexual health clinic and ask for a simple chlamydia pee test. ● In most cases, chlamydia can be easily fixed with a single course of antibiotics. ● Using condoms is the best way for people who are having sex to prevent getting and passing on chlamydia. ● When you are ready to have sex you should have a yarn about contraception (meaning the Pill/the Rod etc.) with a family member, local doctor, Aboriginal Health Service or Sexual Health Service.
