INGKINTJA
A meeting place for men Ingkintja is a focus point for male health in central Australia. It provides a holistic health service where Aboriginal males access a range of services in a culturally safe, male-only environment. Males come to meet and discuss their needs and aspirations. Many take advantage of our clinical services through our general practitioner, nurse and psychology staff. Less formal engagement in health is provided through preventative health and life-skills presentations as well as construction, cooking, gardening, bush food trips, bush medicine and sporting activities. Cultural health is renewed through the respect given elders as they offer their guidance and through support to ceremonial camps. Ingkintja also has a regional and national role in advocating for the needs of Aboriginal males and provides a cultural brokering service for governments and NGO’s. Our logo shows men (in black) sitting down with younger males and non-Aboriginal males to talk, listen and learn about health. Ceremonially, we wear a layer of white cockatoo feathers that allow our true personalities to come out. Two spears are available to be used as tools for destroying danger, a shield for protection and boomerangs as symbols of extending friendship.
