Milliya Rumurra Aboriginal Corporation was established in 1978 through the voluntary efforts of concerned local Indigenous people who identified the need for culturally sensitive substance misuse treatment services. Clients come to Milliya Rumurra from all areas in the Kimberley region and across Western Australia to access the therapeutic residential program. Indigenous people represent 80% of the total number of clients. Our residential centre can accommodate a maximum of 25 people including singles, couples and families. Milliya Rumurra’s residential program offers our clients a supportive and non-confrontational atmosphere in a culturally aware environment that is free of alcohol and other drugs. Milliya Rumurra’s residential clients worked in partnership with Inception Strategies to produce the comic’s storyline. Through the development process, our clients/authors were presented with an opportunity to explore their creativity and depict a strong message about the importance of both parents abstaining from alcohol, other drugs and cigarettes during pregnancy. Congratulations to all involved in the operational part of this project as the end product speaks for itself. We are sure increased conversations will result from community members’ enjoyment of this comic, as it delivers a social message in a realistic and appealing storyline.
