It doesn’t seem long ago that I sat at my desk in our new offices to write the introduction to the last catalogue. In early March many of our suppliers were rushing to get their Coronation ranges together but many were not available in time so we felt that rather than wait until early May for our next full catalogue we would put together a special interim catalogue to get the details of the new pieces to you as soon as possible. Interest worldwide in the Coronation commemoratives has been far greater than we had expected and as a result some ranges have already sold out and others are in very heavy demand. If you do want a memento of this historic occasion, we do urge you not to wait too long before ordering as we would hate our loyal customers to be disappointed.

It is refreshing to see so many of our great British companies producing inspiring ranges to mark this memorable day. The skills in this country are still admired all over the world and we love sending so many of these beautiful pieces to enthusiastic collectors in far away lands. Carrs silver in Sheffield are a family-owned company producing some of the best silverware ranges. We had a fantastic response to the specially hallmarked items which were done for the Platinum Jubilee and we are delighted that a new Hallmark has been developed for use during the time of the Coronation. We have commissioned special pieces from Carrs using this hallmark which we are featuring for the first time.

Being based in the heart of Staffordshire we have a very strong link to our local pottery manufacturers and love to support them as much as we can, and they seem to like working with us and have been hugely encouraging over the past four years. Moorcroft in particular have worked closely with us on exclusive items and we were delighted when they agreed to do an exclusive design for us to celebrate the Coronation. They have also developed their own range which we are showing for the first time. Demand for Moorcroft is particularly strong at present and so we are expecting a lot of interest in this fabulous range.

Despite many of the big brands in Stoke on Trent moving production overseas the potteries remain at the heart of specialist ceramic production. Our own exclusive ranges are made and decorated in one of the iconic five towns of Stoke on Trent. The new range from family-owned Edwardian China is continuing the long tradition of Royal commemoratives made in the potteries.

Over lockdown many people rediscovered the joy to be had from puzzles. In our house there was never a time when there was not one underway. Our own Goviers wooden puzzles are designed by Caroline Dadd and made in the UK. Each one is tested by Janet before it goes into production. The first cut sample was delivered yesterday and so the race was on to get it finished. Unfortunately Janet had to hand it over to Oliver’s fiancé Hannah to complete as bedtime called last night. The general verdict was that it was our most challenging yet!

We are always on the lookout for new items to add to our collection and often we are amazed that we have not found them before. Spode have a delightful range of commemorative pieces in their signature blue and white. We all love this style of design and were delighted when we were able to include it in this catalogue.

There are many different pieces being done to mark the Coronation on 6th May, not all are things that we feel fit into our range but when I saw the Coronation Walking Stick my interest was sparked. I immediately rang and got the MD of this family-owned company based in the UK. It turned out that the MD was also the designer, and we had a long chat about what they did and the production of their pieces. All the sticks are made in Germany to very exacting standards. Many of the designs are great fun and bring a touch of style to an item that can be rather underwhelming. I am looking forward to adding one of the umbrellas to the antique coat stand that I have just purchased and if my leg does not improve, I will be investing in a walking stick very soon.

Last but by no means least Halcyon Days have added yet more pieces to their very extensive range. Being holders of many Royal Warrants, they have slightly more exacting approval requirements than most so many of the ranges were not available in time for our last catalogue. Once again the designs are a fitting tribute on the occasion of the Coronation of King Charles and Camilla the Queen Consort.

We hope that we have selected the very best ranges to commemorate the Coronation and we look forward to the day, even if it clashes with our son’s wedding!

To celebrate the Coronation of King Charles III a commemorative hallmark has been produced. Based on a medal by Ian Rank-Broadley FRBS and using artwork supplied by Thomas Fattorini, the mark depicts the King’s head against an oval background.

A spokesperson for the Assay Offices of the UK said “The UK Assay Offices have a long tradition of capturing special events with the creation of commemorative hallmarks. The special mark provides an additional narrative for products carrying the mark. Equally importantly, it brings the importance of the hallmark into focus with the jewellery-buying consumer.”
