“To look forward we must acknowledge the past, question that which is relevant in order to project for the future.” The New Zealand Society of Artists in Glass combine with the Wanganui Glass Group Festival and the New Zealand Mosaic Society to present ‘Generate,’ the 31st biennial glass conference in Wanganui this October. Our international and national speakers convene to present new directions in traditional techniques across a broad spectrum of glass practice. The conference schedule is packed with a wide variety of things to do for all ages and in addition, will be complimented by visiting artist workshops, exhibitions, a silent auction with awards. Wanganui will also be celebrating the 60th Anniversary of Diplomatic Relations between New Zealand and Japan. This program includes some events that are scheduled around the NZSAG conference so celebrations will be with some Japanese flavour. Come and listen to established arts practitioners and professionals who contribute to the continuum and perspectives of glass generations to come. What is Glass? And how do we shape glass as it shapes us? We look forward to warmly welcoming you to Wanganui once again.

I observe the detail, the quiet rhythm built through repetition and the intricate evidence of growth and change.
Inspired by experiences of detail in nature Inspired by experiences of detail in nature, Clare Belfrage’s work has been distinguished by the use of fine glass threads to draw complex linear patterns on the surface of blown glass forms. She has maintained a vibrant practice for over twenty years. Clare has been an active participant in artists’ communities including the glass based studio Blue Pony, SA, of which she is a founding member and the JamFactory Glass Studio community in Adelaide. Currently living and working amongst the artist community of Canberra Glassworks where she plays the pivotal role of Creative Director.

Galia Amsel is a New Zealand-based contemporary glass artist. Born in 1967 in London, and raised in Hong Kong, Galia Amsel has resided in Auckland, New Zealand since 2003. In 1989 she gained a Bachelor of Arts, first class honours, in 3-D Design (ceramics and glass) with Middlesex Polytechnic, London and in 1991, a Masters in Glass with Royal College of Art, London. Amsel has exhibited widely throughout the world and is represented in numerous internationally significant collections.
colour, form, notion and intervention Galia Amsel’s work is characterised by exploration of colour, form, notion and intervention. The simplicity of her work comes from a “highly developed visual sense” and spatial harmonies founded in “geometry and the resolution of mathematical formulae”.

curator Contemporary decorative arts and design Justine Olsen will present perspectives on the glass collection at Te Papa, looking at how and why it has been developed. In 2010 Justine was recognised as the recipient of the prestigious Clarke Collection/Creative New Zealand Scholarship designated for mid career arts professionals to expand their knowledge in the area of decorative art.

Justine Olsen’s extensive experience previously includes Curator of Decorative Arts at the Auckland Museum, researcher for the Historic Places Trust and Arts Advisor for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trades.

Award winning mosaic artist Marian Shapiro lives and works in Sydney, Australia making contemporary art and architectural mosaics for private and public spaces. Her work has been shown both in Australia and internationally in venues as diverse as the Sydney Opera House and the San Diego Museum of Man. She is honoured to be the first ever mosaicist to be asked to present at the NZSAG conference.
making contemporary art and architectural mosaics Marian will talk about the evolution of her mosaic art practice over the last ten years with particular reference to technique and materials. Marian will discuss the process through which an artist generates a personal style. She will explore the need for artists to possess a fundamental understanding of traditional techniques and suggest that it is from this place that truly creative decisions can be made.

This presentation is an overview of my jewellery collections from the past 15 years. I will reveal my creative processes and my obsession with researching and making the marriage between metal and glass to create wearable art. I will conclude with my latest jewellery research which is based around the European tradition of the “Grand Tour” in the 1830’s and the jewellery form of micro-mosaic.
making the marriage between metal and glass to create Kathryn Wardill received her Master of Arts, (Fine Art) and Grad Dip in Tertiary Teaching in 1998 from RMIT University. Kathryn is a full-time jeweller, metalsmith, and glass bead artist who actively participates in group and solo exhibitions in Australia and overseas. From her Melbourne studio, she creates both exhibition and retail jewellery featuring outstanding glass beads.

Dr. Wightman began working with glass as a BA student at the University of Sunderland (UK) in 2000 where she obtained first class honours in Glass and Ceramics followed by an MA in 2005 (distinction) in glass. In 2006 she was awarded a two year Craft Council placement (UK) to assist in establishing her creative practice, Kathryn Wightman Glass. During this time she produced several bodies of artworks that integrated glassmaking and printmaking. This led to development of Ph.D research.
the artwork was not only maintained but enhanced The research I undertook addressed these limitations through the development of five print inspired glass processes that alleviated or improved the limitations whilst ensuring that decorative potential of the artwork was not only maintained but enhanced. To substantiate the research, several bodies of artwork were produced that developed and demonstrated the practicality as well as the two dimensional/three dimensional creative potential of the print inspired glass processes. In this presentation I will discuss my research findings in the context of artistic glass practice and also describe the print inspired glassmaking processes.

In 1986 a nice man asked me for a pink Cadillac car neon sign. He saw my art and said,“I’m gonna make you famous!” I thought, yeah right. Said, “Oh, thank you” . A year passed. He called. Said, “I just got a cavernous old parking garage and I want you to fill it with neon. We`ll call it Neon Garage.” I thought, yeah, right. Said,”Oh, I`d love to”. Did nothing. He called, asked where the lights were. Offered cash money. I figured a hundred bucks. He politely asked if a thousand to start was sufficient. I managed to croak, “Oh, thank you. I`ll be right over”.
thus began a saga that continues even today Mundy Hepburn, from Connecticut USA, has made his living through glass art for over thirty years. His work has been exhibited in over thirty installations, and featured in five publications. A member of the Glass Art Society in America, Mundy has made a name for himself with a unique style of art - luminous glass. A pioneer in this art form, Mundy combines technology with art to create a breed of moving, living art.

Garry first entered the world of New Zealand Studio glass when it was still in its infancy in July 1979, starting out as a flame worker making glass chess sets. Since then he has gone from strength to strength, becoming one of New Zealand’s first studio glass artists with his speciality in blown glass.
new zealands first studio glass artists ‘Electric glass’ is starting to become a recognised force as artists and galleries are starting to take interest in these items as genuine art works, with many workshops and exhibitions highlighting or focusing on neon and plasma works to express contemporary ideas. However, the technical knowledge about the construction of these items is scattered and limited, and that is why in this instance the knowledge exchange between Garry, Mundy and Mark is vital as it has already lead to new discoveries and ideas about the construction of these works through combining their areas of expertise.

In 1987 Kimiake and Shin-ichi Higuchi began their serious research in the techniques of Pate de verre. Neither of them had received any formal training in glass. They established many of their original techniques through several years of trial and error. Their work is represented in many museums and galleries and is collected globally. They have been invited to do workshops in many parts of the world, including Japan, France, Italy, Taiwan, Spain and the United States.
