By air: Arriving at Detroit Metro Airport, take I-94 west to Michigan Avenue exit (exit 181B). Get in the far left lane and turn left on Hewitt. Head north on Hewitt for 2.5 miles, past Washtenaw Avenue. The stadium is on the east side of the road. From North: U.S. 23 south to Washtenaw Avenue east (exit 37A); take Washtenaw to Hewitt Road; turn left on Hewitt and proceed to Rynearson Stadium. From South: U.S. 23 north to Washtenaw Avenue east (exit 37A); take Washtenaw to Hewitt Road; turn left on Hewitt and proceed to Rynearson Stadium. INTERVIEWS Head coach John Goodridge is available for interviews on an appointment-only basis after meets and practices. Personal interviews with the coach and athletes should be scheduled with the EMU Sports Information Office. Individual athletes are available for interviews Monday-Thursday. Their availability will depend on practice and class schedules. Please give at least 24-hour advance notice so the players can be contacted and arrangements can be made. Home phone numbers for athletes and coaches WILL NOT be given out by the EMU Sports Information Office. The coaching staff and athletes will be available upon request for post-meet interviews.

CREDENTIALS AND PARKING EMU home cross country meets are free and open to the public, therefore, no credentials or parking passes are required. All media wishing to attend away meets should contact the host institution regarding media policies and services. EMU does not issue parking credentials for cross country. Hudson Mills is a State of Michigan park and therefore, spectators and media wishing to attend the meet must pay the required state entry fee.

Alma Mater • Long Island, ‘72 Eighth season John Goodridge begins his eighth season at Eastern Michigan University and the veteran coach has enjoyed an outstanding coaching career. With EMU’s Mid-American Conference championships in 2001, 2005, 2006 and 2007, Goodridge has coached conference cross country championship teams in the MAC, Big Ten and Atlantic Coast Conference. Since arriving at EMU eight seasons ago, he has coached two NCAA National Championship top three individuals including 2001 National Champion Boaz Cheboiywo, six cross country All-Americans, four NCAA Great Lakes Regional Individual Champions, five Mid-American Conference Individual Champions and 29 All-MAC harriers. In 2007, Goodridge’s Eagles had another outstanding season, claiming their third MAC Championship title, the school’s 13th overall. Additionally, Josh Perrin won the individual MAC title in a time of 24:33. Five of Goodridge’s athletes were selected to All-MAC teams (Perrin, Josh Karanja, David Brent, Curtis Vollmar and Kyle Mena), while three were selected Academic All-MAC (Brent, Karanja and Wade Wines). Karanja earned a spot at the NCAA Championship meet after finishing eighth at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship, the best performance by any MAC runner. The 2006 season was a banner year for Goodridge and his harriers. They repeated as MAC Champions and had the lowest point total ever by an Eagle team at the MAC meet. Six Eagles claimed All-MAC honors while senior Corey Nowitzke was the top finisher at both the MAC Championship and the NCAA Great Lakes Regional. He finished 30th overall at the NCAA National Championshipsand was named an All-American and Academic AllAmerican. In 2005, EMU captured its 11th MAC Championship title. Nowitzke and Neal Naughton finished second and fifth, respectively. The Eagles went on to place fifth at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional Championship to qualify for the NCAA Championship, where they finished 24th, with Nowitzke as the top runner. Championship, the Eagles redeemed themselves by finishing third at the NCAA Championship, the highest place ever in school history. In his first season at the helm of the Eastern Michigan men’s cross country program, Goodrige directed the Eagles to a first-place showing at the MAC Championship. Additionally, Boaz Cheboiywo won the individual title at the NCAA Championship, the first ever by an Eastern harrier. Prior to coming to EMU, Goodridge was the head men’s track and field and cross country coach at Wake Forest University from 1984-99 where he led the Demon Deacons to unparalleled success in the school’s cross country and track and field history. He spent three years, 1979-82, as the head women’s cross country coach and assistant track coach at Michigan State University. He also served as the head United States national coach at the 1985 IAAF World Cross Country Championships in Lisbon, Portugal, and in 1986 as the head United States coach at the World University Cross Country Championship in Graz, Austria. At Wake Forest, Goodridge coached the secondmost Atlantic Coast Conference championships of all sports in their history, and he coached the first ACC cross country team championship in school history as well as the first individual cross country champion. His 1989 Wake Forest cross country squad achieved the highest finish in that sport’s school history-it

Head Coach John Goodridge

was third in the NCAA Championships, an ACC record. His Wake Forest cross country team finished first or second in the ACC for 10 consecutive years, winning four league titles and making seven NCAA appearances, and producing 35 AllACC performers and four cross country AllAmericans. In track, his team turned in the highest finish ever for Wake Forest in the ACC with a runner-up spot and eighth-place NCAA finish. Goodridge has coached the best cross country teams in school history at Michigan State (womenfourth place NCAA National Championships), Wake Forest University (men-third place NCAA’s and first ever ACC Championship) and now EMU (third place NCAA National Championships). He is one of a small group of active coaches who have coached more than two top-three NCAA team national finishes. A native of New York City, Goodridge graduated from Long Island University in 1972 and earned his master’s degree from the University of Michigan in 1975. During his many years of involvement in coaching cross country, he has been an officer of national organizations, including serving as the vice president of the U.S. Men’s Collegiate Cross Country Coaches Association and a founder of the American Distance Club.

The Eastern Michigan University men’s cross country team will enter the 2008 season with the challenge of defending their Mid-American Conference crown for the third time and look to win their fourth straight MAC Championship crown. In head coach John Goodridge’s eighth season at EMU, he returns a seasoned veteran squad. The Eagles return all but one letterwinner from the 2007 squad, losing only Wade Wines to graduation. However, with a team loaded with seniors, the Eagles look to send them out with a bang. “Our senior laden team is particularly excited about the opportunity to win their fourth consecutive MAC Cross Country Championship as we host this year’s event,” said Goodridge. “Hosting the championship provides a very special atmosphere for our athletes and our loyal alumni who support us so well.” Headlining the senior class is defending MAC Champion Josh Perrin (Hillsdale, Mich.-Hillsdale) and NCAA Championship qualifier Josh Karanja (Ottawa, Canada-Nepean). Karanja led the team in 2007 as the top performer in every meet but the MAC Championship meet. He was the top MAC finisher at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, finishing eighth. Karanja earned an at-large bid to qualify for the NCAA Championships where he finished 150th. Sophomores Ransom Brown (Coldwater, Mich.-Coldwater), Willy Dague (Newport, Mich.Monroe Jefferson), Ryan Grau (Kalamazoo, Mich.-Kalamazoo Central) and Matt Hammersmith (Wolcotville, Mich.-Prairie Heights) are capable of being impactful athletes. Grau leads the group being the only one to have competed at the MAC Championship meet, finishing 30th. Hammersmith was also named MAC runner of the week Oct. 22. After a year of redshirting, Nick Deering (Empire, Mich.-Traverse City West), Peter Martin (Traverse City, Mich.-Traverse City West), Austin Hendrix (Sylvania, Ohio.-Sylvania Northview), Andrew Pfeifer (Clarence, N.Y.- Clarence), Wes Stoody (Fenton, Mich.-Flint Powers Catholic), Cole Sanserverino (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe) and Jared Werner (Monroe, Mich.-Monroe) look forward to the chance to prove themselves and finally make a mark here at Eastern. (Manchester, Mich.-Manchester), Garret Lacy (Fenwick, Mich.-Carson City Crystal) and Drew Holbrook (Elmore, Ohio-Woodmore). The Eagles will open up the 2008 schedule at the Michigan Open, Aug. 29. The following week, they will see action at the Titan invitational in Northville, Mich., Sept 6. The Green and White will then take two full weekends off to train before hitting the road for the Notre Dame Invitational, Oct. 3. A week later, the Eagles will then take on teams throughout the state at the Michigan Intercollegiate, Oct. 10. On Oct. 18, they will head to Terre Haute, Ind., the site of this year’s NCAA Championship, to compete in the Pre-NCAA meet to gauge themselves against national competition. The following weekend, the will host the EMU Fall Classic, Oct. 25, before hosting the Mid-American Conference Championship, Nov. 1. The final two meets of the year will be the NCAA Great Lakes Region, Nov. 15, and the NCAA Championship, Nov. 24. “Our schedule includes two national caliber invitationals as we travel to the Notre Dame Invitational and Pre NCAA Invitational, where we will face many of the very best teams in the nation,” said Goodridge.

EMU Did You Know? Eastern Michigan has only had four head coaches since cross country became a varsity sport in 1923, as former club standout Lloyd Olds took over the program. He coached from 1923-31, and then from 1933-1941. Then assistant coach George Marshall filled in for Olds in 1932, who went on a coaching leave for the 1932 Olympics. In 1942, Marshall took over the program until his retirement after the 1966 season. In 1967, Bob Parks was hired and spent 34 years at the position of head coach until he retired following the 2000 season. Current head coach John Goodridge took over during the 2001 season.

2007 Season in Review

The 2007 Eastern Michigan University men’s cross country team had a season for the ages. EMU claimed its third consecutive Mid-American Conference title (13th overall) and had its 12th individual (Josh Perrin) and 16th overall winner claim the individual MAC title for the Green and White. The Eagles began the 2007 season with high expectations. The MAC coaches voted them to repeat as champions in the preseason coaches poll, setting the tone for the year. EMU opened the season at the annual Michigan Open (Aug. 31), a non-scoring meet featuring the Eagles and cross-county rivals the University of Michigan. Josh Karanja led the way for the Eagles, running the 10,000 meter course in a time of 31:20, finishing second to former harrier Corey Nowitzke. The Eagles set several records at the 2007 Western Ontario Invitational (Sept. 22), including lowest points scored (25) and the lowest overall team time (161:26). Karanja once again led, taking home the individual victory, running the 10K race with a 31:53 clocking. His time was the 11th fastest time in meet history. For his efforts that week, he was selected the MAC Runner of the Week. At the Notre Dame Invitational (Sept. 28) in South Bend, Ind., Karanja once again led the team, this time, to an eighth-place team finish. Karanja ran a blistering 24:20, his fastest collegiate 8,000 meter race to date, which was good for an 18th place finish. He was named the MAC runner of the Week. At the NCAA Pre-Nationals (Oct. 13) in Terre Haute, Ind., the Eagles walked away with a 20th place finish against 13 nationally-ranked teams in the men’s 8,000 meter race. The Green and White, who were ranked fourth in the region going into the meet, were led by Karanja for the fourth straight week. He ran his fastest collegiate mark of 23:56, 20 seconds faster than the mark he set the previous week. Other Eagles to set per-

Josh Karanja sonal-bests at the Pre-NCAA included Kyle Mena, Josh Perrin and Luke Chrusciel. At the EMU Fall Classic (Oct. 19), Matt Hammersmith was the top runner for the Eagles, finishing 11th in 32:59. For his efforts, the MAC named him the Runner of the Week. The following week at the MAC Championship (Oct. 27), the Eagle harriers won their third consecutive cross country title and 13th in school history. The Green and White totaled 31 points to best runner-up Miami, which had 50 points. Only the second time in school history that the Eagles have won three consecutive conference titles. Eastern captured five straight from 1990 through 1994. The Eagles, who joined the MAC in 1972, are now a perfect 4-0 when Central Michigan has hosted the MAC Championship. The Eagles had all juniors score and had three in the top seven to claim first-team All-MAC and two additional runners earning second-team All-MAC honors. The Eagles had a new Josh to lead them this at the MAC meet, in Perrin. The junior, who finished second at last year’s championship, won the individual title in a time of 24:33, edging out Ohio’s Craig Leon. The 2007 championship was the second consecutive year in which an Eagle claimed the individual title. Perrin, who earned first-team All-MAC honors for the second consecutive year, becomes the 12th person and 16th overall winner to claim the individual title for the Green and White. earned All-Region honors on his way to an eighth-place showing. Although he did not earn an outright bid to the NCAA meet, Karanja was awarded the needed at-large bid and finished 150th at the NCAA Championship (Nov. 19).

ished the 8,000-meter course in a time of 24:49. He took home first team All-MAC honors for the third consecutive season. David Brent was fifth across the finish line completing the race in a time of 25:06 to earn All-MAC honors for the second straight year. Curtis Vollmar finished 10th for the Eagles in a time of 25:19, earning second team All-MAC accolades again. He improved from 12th place performance in 2007. Rounding out the top five scorers for the Green and White was Kyle Mena. Mena, who did not run last year in the conference championship due to injury finished 12th in a time of 25:19. Neal Naughton was next up for the Eagles. He finished 17th in a time of 25:33. Following Naughton was Chrusciel. He finished 19th in a time of 25:35. The final two runners across the line were Wade Wines (21; 25:40) and Ryan Grau (30; 25:54). Coach John Goodridge was voted the 2007 Coach of the Year, earning the award for the third straight year. Two weeks later Eastern capped off a stellar 2007 season with a seventh-place showing today at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional (Nov. 10) in Bloomington, Ind. The Eagles tallied 230 points. The University of Wisconsin and the University of Michigan tied with 68 points to win the men’s race and earn the two automatic bids from the Great Lakes Region to the NCAA National meet. Karanja

Since Eastern Michigan joined the MAC in 1972, EMU has won 13 MAC championships. Under coach Bob Parks the Eastern Michigan cross-country program produced eight MAC Champions, three All-Americans, and led the program to the NAIA and NCAA Division II National Championship in 1970. EMU, which had won the Reese Trophy three previous times (1987-88, 1990-91, 1995-96), added its fourth overall men’s all-sports title in 2007-08. The Eagles posted four league regular-season titles and one MAC Tournament crown last season.

Providing leadership in education and in diversity, the Mid-American Conference moves into its 62nd year of service to the student-athlete. Since its inception in 1946, the Mid-American Conference has progressively grown and developed into one of the most aggressive Division I conferences in the country. Under the guidance of Commissioner Rick Chryst, the seventh commissioner in the history of the league, the MAC has responded to the ever changing landscape of membership issues and member standards in the fastpaced environment of collegiate athletics. The league has grown its commitment to championships by expanding to six neutral site post season events – football (Detroit’s Ford Field), volleyball (Toledo’s SeaGate Centre), men’s and women’s basketball (Cleveland’s Quicken Loans Arena), softball (Akron’s Firestone Stadium) and most recently baseball (Chillicothe’s VA Memorial Stadium). MAC football produced three bowl teams in 2007, the giving the MAC 14 bowl berths in the past four years with 10 different league institutions represented during that time. The 2007 season also welcomed the addition of Temple University to the East Division and the Owls responded with a league-leading defense and a 4-4 conference mark in their inaugural MAC season. A total of nine MAC football players were selected in the 2008 NFL draft, making it the second most selectees for the league since the NFL went to seven rounds in 1994. In its partnership with ESPN, the worldwide leader in sports, an unprecedented 25 football games involving MAC schools will be televised in 2008. That number includes regular season and post season events on ESPN, ESPN2, ESPNU, ESPN Classic and ESPN360. In addition, an eight-game MAC Game of the Week will be syndicated on ESPN Plus and available on over-the-air network affiliates to more than 22 millions homes in the Midwest. Four Mid-American Conference men’s basketball programs went on to postseason play this season as Kent State (NCAA Tournament), Akron (National Invitation Tournament), Miami (College Basketball Invitational) and Ohio (College Basketball Invitational) all made an appearance in postseason tournaments. There were a total of two women’s basketball programs that reached the postseason as Miami (NCAA Tournament) and Bowling Green (Women’s NIT) represented the MAC in postseason play.

The 2007 men’s cross country team captured the Mid-American Conference Championship. The title was the Eagles’ third in a row and 13th in school history and the fourth under head coach John Goodridge.

Kent State men’s basketball program was ranked in the top 25 in the regular season for the first time in school history. The Golden Flashes were 23rd in the Associated Press poll and 24th in the ESPN/USA Today coaches’ poll, both of which were released on February 25th.The Flashes earned their 10th consecutive 20-win season in addition to picking up the 1,000th victory in the 92-year history of the program. The last time the MAC had a team appear in the top 25 during the regular season was in 2001 when Ball State was ranked for four straight weeks (Nov. 26-Dec. 17), with the Cardinals climbing as high as 15th in the AP poll on Dec. 3. The Golden Flashes also made headlines in men’s golf this past season as KSU finished alone in sixth place at the NCAA Championship to earn the highest finish in the program’s storied history. MAC wrestlers also continued to shine on the national stage as Central Michigan senior 197-pounder Wynn Michalak finished runner-up at the NCAA Wrestling Championships and the Chippewas finished tied for seventh in the overall team competition. MAC Milestones In March of 2006, Chryst and Cleveland Cavaliers President Len Komoroski announced that the Mid-American Conference Men’s and Women’s Basketball Tournaments would remain in Cleveland at Quicken Loans Arena through 2011. The MAC also announced a format change for both tournaments, bringing all 12 men’s and women’s teams to Cleveland beginning in 2007. The MAC also cohosted the 2007 Women’s Final Four at Quicken Loans Arena, after successfully hosting a 2006 NCAA Women’s Basketball Regional at Quicken Loans Arena. In 2006, Chryst also announced a five-year partnership with ISP Sports, Inc. to oversee and coordinate the league’s marketing and sponsorship rights. ISP, which currently manages more than 40 college properties nationwide, is considered the leader in the collegiate sports marketing industry. The MAC was ISP’s first conference property. ISP is responsible for managing and growing the MAC’s stable of corporate partners, which currently includes FirstEnergy, Kraft, Marathon Oil, GMAC Financial Services, Gatorade, Automart.com and Sirius Satellite Radio. FirstEnergy has been the title sponsor for the men’s basketball tournament since its first year in Cleveland in March 2000, Kraft has been associated with the women’s basketball tournament since 2001, and Marathon Oil will be sponsoring the football championship for the fourth time in 2008.

History of the MAC Based in Cleveland since July 1999 following a 15-year stay in Toledo, Ohio, the MAC has established historic measurements in both football and men’s and women’s basketball since its move to Northeast Ohio. The Mid-American Conference was founded as a fiveschool league on February 24, 1946 in Columbus, Ohio with Ohio, Butler, Cincinnati, Wayne State and Western Reserve admitted as charter members. The Mid-American Conference has 12 full-time schools and a 13th, Temple, for football only. Comprising the East Division is the University of Akron (joined in 1992), Bowling Green State University (1952), University at Buffalo (1998), Kent State University (1951), Miami University (1947) , Ohio University (1946) and Temple University (2007). The West Division members are Ball State University (1973), Central Michigan University (1971), Eastern Michigan University (1971), Northern Illinois University (1975-86, 1997), University of Toledo (1950) and Western Michigan University (1947). In 1946 men’s basketball was the first competitive sport in the MAC, which now sponsors a total of 23 sports. Women’s sports were brought into the conference’s structure in 1980. For men, championships (11) are sponsored in football, basketball, baseball, cross country, soccer, swimming and diving, indoor track and field, outdoor track and field, wrestling, golf and tennis. For women, championships (12) are sponsored in basketball, softball, volleyball, cross country, field hockey, golf, soccer, swimming and diving, gymnastics, indoor track and field, outdoor track and tennis.

ROGER ARNETT (1928-30) Owosso, Michigan. One of the first in a long line of outstanding Eastern Michigan cross country runners...Was a three-time AAU AllAmerican...In 1931, he was in a car accident and broke his back, ending his running career...Returned to Eastern to earn a science degree in 1934...Became one of the early leaders in demanding the rights of the physically handicapped...Testified before congressional committees, was an ordained Methodist minister, a research engineer at the University of Michigan and even had a bestselling book Handicap Race written about him.

EDDIE AYLMER (1949-51) Buzzard Bay, Massachusetts. Eddie was three-time All-IIAC, two-time All-CCC and AllAmerican in 1951. Aaron Bartee (1997-2000) Muskegon, Michigan. Was named All-State once, All-CCC three times and was All-MAC twice in cross country...MAC runner-up in 2000... All-Regional NCAA in 2000...Indoor and outdoor MAC co-MVP in 2001 as he won four individual titles. CLIVE BONELLE (1990-92, 94) England. Clive had an outstanding career despite being hampered by injuries, as he missed all of 1993 and had an up-and- down season in 1994...In 1991 he was All-State, All-CCC, All-MAC and NCAA All-District...In ‘92 he was state and MAC runner-up, eighth at NCAA District and ran at the NCAA National Championship Meet...In ‘94 he came on at the end, finishing 17th at MAC and 51st at Districts. JASON BOOTHROYD (1993-95) England. A transfer from England, Jason had a consistent and outstanding career...Three-time All-MAC and All-CCC, All-State in 1993 and two-time All-District...MAC runner-up in 1993... In 1994 he was third at the CCC and MAC and finished 11th in Districts, becoming the first EMU runner to individually qualify for nationals since 1975...In 1995 he won the first three races of the season and finished third at the MAC championship despite the fact that he hadn’t run in two weeks because of injury and illness. DAVE BURKHART (1972-75) Southgate, Michigan. Dave was All-MAC in 1973 (11th) and two-time All-District (seventh and 12th) runner...Best times were 1:53.55 (800), 4:04 (relay leg), 8:53.14 (2 mile) and 14:21.84 (5,000).

Joins Elmore Banton, retired head coach at Ohio University Boaz Cheboiywo and OU athlete, as the only MidAmerican Conference National Champions...Qualifying for the 2001 NCAA Outdoor Track Championships, Cheboiywo came away with his second NCAA individual title of the year winning the 10,000-meter run with a time of 28:32.10...At the 2001 NCAA Great Lakes Regional, won with a time of 29.52.0 which was almost 45 seconds in front of his nearest competition, Big Ten Champion Alan Webb of Michigan...At the 2001 Mid-American Conference Championships held at Eagle Crest Golf Course in Ypsilanti, Cheboiywo won the MAC Men’s Cross Country Championship with 24:11 clocking, which set a course record, almost 30 seconds better than the previous mark...Won the 2002 NCAA Great Lakes Regional with a time of 30:08.1, successfully defending his 2001 title...In 2002 NCAA Championships, Cheboiywo finished 7th overall with a time of 29:46.1. Morris came to EMU from El Camino Community College, where he was All-State...Third in the MAC in 1996 and qualified for the NCAA meet...All-MAC honoree in 1997, he was also a two-time All-CCC pick and was named All-State in cross country...Co-MVP in the MAC in track, winning the indoor mile and 3,000 meter...Posted a time of 4:05 as the anchor leg on the distance medley relay team.

Blake McDowell (1997-2000) Reynoldsburg, Ohio. Was a back-to-back MAC champion in 1999 and 2000, only the second runner to do so in school history...Runnerup in 2000 Great Lakes Regional repeated with a time of 30:48.0, and finished 43rd at the NCAA Championships... Two-time All-MAC and All-State selection...In track, he was the CCC and Michigan Intercollegiate indoor 5,000 meter champion and placed second in the MAC indoor 5,000 meter and outdoor 10,000 meters. Originally from England, Dave was the first great distance runner under Coach Parks...Was the first of only two runners to make All-American four times (NAIA)... Thompson won back-to-back MAC Championship in 2002 (23:50.2) and 2003 (23.39.9)...In 2002, he also finished second at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional (30:27.8) and 12th at the NCAA Championships (29:51.40) and earned All-MAC, All-Region and All-American honors...Thompson won his first NCAA Great Lakes Regional title (30.12.0) in 2003.

Record: 134-24-1 In 1967, Lyndon Johnson was President of the United States, U.S. troops were being sent to Vietnam, the Beatles were still taking America by storm and Bob Parks was the new cross country and track coach at Eastern Michigan. After 34 years, a lot of things changed. The U.S. pulled out of Vietnam in 1975, Johnson died in 1973 and the Beatles broke up in 1970, not to mention only two of them are still alive. After 34 years, Parks retired as one of the most successful coaches at EMU. During his career, Eastern Michigan cross country compiled a dual-meet record of 132-24-1 for a .843 winning percentage. EMU was 75-16 (.824) in MAC action and has won nine MAC titles (1973, 1974, 1986, 1990, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994, 2000). The Eagles went undefeated 11 times ( 1970, 1972, 1973, 1979, 1983, 1985, 1986, 1991, 1992, 1993, 1994) in dual meet action during his tenure. They competed just as well on a national level. In his first five years, Parks led Eastern to the NAIA and/or NCAA Division II Championship meet every year and won the 1967 and 1970 NAIA National Championship and the 1970 NCAA Division II National title. After joining the MAC and moving up to the NCAA Division I status in 1972, EMU won two district championships ( 1973, 1974) and qualified for the NCAA Champi-

Parks’ teams qualified for a national championship meet (NAIA, NCAA I, II) nine times in his first 10 years. Eastern also won seven Central Collegiate Conference crowns and nine Michigan Intercollegiate Championships. Parks was named MAC Coach of the Year seven times (1973, 1973, 1986, 1990, 1994, 1998, 2000), was five-time CCC Coach of the Year (1973, 1974, 1985, 1995, 1997) and twice honored as NCAA District Coach of the Year (1973, 1974). The 78-year-old Parks (9-6-30) was born in Pittsburgh, Penn., and grew up in Howell Mich. At Howell High School, he played football, basketball, baseball and track and was the Michigan high School Class B State Champion in the 440-yard dash. He was a three-time letterwinner in track at Michigan Normal College (now EMU), won the 1952 IIAC 880-yard run and was a member of the mile relay team that held the school record for 14 years. He began his coaching career at Ferndale High School in 1952 and also coached at DeWitt High School and Redford Thurston H.S. from 1954-61, until joining the Western Michigan University track and cross country staff as an assistant coach in 1961 where he helped the Broncos to numerous MAC and CCC titles, as well as two NCAA Division I Championships in cross country. Parks left Western Michigan in January 1967, to return to his alma mater as head coach. Parks is married to the former Pat Greene, who is retired from the EMU Chemistry Department. They have four children, Nancy, Susan, Steve and Scott. Sue is the current head coach of the women’s cross country and track and field programs at Eastern, while Scott is the athletic director and head men’s and women’s track and cross country coach at Seminole Ridge High School in Palm Beach County, Fla.

EMU finishes second at the NCAA-CD National Championship with Tony Mifsud and Terry Norman as All-Americans. EMU wins its second PAC Championship in three years. Undefeated in dual meets (7-0).

1966

The Hurons leave the PAC and win their first National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics title as well as finishing third at the NCAA-CD National Championship. Tony Mifsud and Terry Norman become the first EMU runners to make Division II and NAIA All-America squad in the same season while Ken Head is also an NAIA All-American. It is a great finale for Coach George Marshall, who retires at the end of the season with a record of 82-34-1 in 23 years.

1967

Eastern has a new coach in alumnus Bob Parks, and the winning tradition continues. The Hurons successfully defend their NAIA National title. Charlton Baldwin, Dick Reamer and Dave Ellis make All-American. Ellis wins a silver medal in the 10,000 meters at the Pan-Am Games. The Hurons win six of eight scored meets. Eastern wins the State NAIA title and ends up third at Nationals. Dave Ellis and Dave Galloway make NAIA All-American list. Ellis competes for Canada at the Olympics at Mexico City.

1969

EMU wins the State NAIA title, and is runner-up in both the NCAA-Division II and NAIA National Championships. All-Americans are Dave Ellis (NAIA), Dave Galloway (Division II) and Wayne Seiler (Division II).

1970

Dave Ellis becomes the first Huron to be a four-time All-American. Eastern wins its fifth consecutive State NAIA title. EMU wins both the NCAA-CD and NAIA National Championships, along with the Indoor and Outdoor NAIA National track titles, Eastern wins four national titles in one year, more than any other school. Bob Boudreau and Terry Furst are NCAA Division II and NAIA All-Americans. Gordon Minty also makes NCAA Division II AllAmerican as a freshman.

1971

EMU is admitted to the Mid-American Conference. The team ends up third at the NCAA-CD National Championships. Terry Furst and Tom Hollander make NCAA Division II All-America. Furst qualifies for NCAA Division I Championship and becomes the first EMU runner to qualify for NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NAIA National Championships. EMU finishes third in the MAC as Gordon Minty wins the individual MAC title and makes All-America, helping EMU to a 13th-place finish at Nationals. Minty becomes the second EMU runner to qualify for NCAA Division I, NCAA Division II and NAIA National Championships.

1973

Eastern goes 9-0 in dual meets and wins five team titles, including the Mid-American Conference, Central Collegiate Conference and the NCAA Districts. Eastern finishes 12th at Nationals. Gordon Minty is unbeaten all year until he falls at the start of Nationals. He comes back to finish third, the highest EMU finish in school history.

1974

EMU repeats as CCC, MAC and District champs and finishes sixth at Nationals. Gordon Minty wins his third straight MAC title and makes All-America for a third time. Dave Smith is also All-America. Eastern qualifies for a national championship meet and has an All-American for the 10th straight year. EMU has five All-MAC and All-District, and four AllCCC runners.

1975

Dave Smith wins the MAC title with a 29:50.4 for six miles. Nick Ellis becomes the first man to make All-MAC for the fourth year. Smith and Ellis both qualify for NCAA’s.

1976

Joe Caruso wins the MAC title in 31:28 for 10,000 meters which is EMU’s fifth straight individual crown and the biggest upset individual winner in MAC history. Eastern qualifies for Nationals for the 11th time in the last 12 years.

1977

For the first time since 1964 Eastern fails to send someone to nationals.

1980

EMU goes unbeaten in dual meet action (6-0).

1981

Dan Shamiyeh makes All-MAC for third time.

Eastern pulls off a big upset, tying for second at the MAC meet. George Rodriguez becomes the third Huron to make All-MAC four times. Rodriguez is first and only four-time All-State runner and makes All-CCC for third time.

1989

EMU hosts districts for the first time. First time since joining the MAC that Hurons fail to have an All-MAC runner. However, Mark Dailey earns AllDistrict honors.

1990

Eastern wins the MAC with four All-MAC performers. 1990 also marked the final time that the distance was 10,000-meters.

1991

In a meet that was supposed to be close, Eastern scores a near-record 30 points and wins the MAC by 44 points. The Hurons also win the Michigan Intercollegiates and take second at the CCC. Mark Dailey, Clive Bonelle and Mike Nessler finish 2-3-4 in the MAC Championships.

1992

Eastern wins just about everything en route to making it to nationals for the first time since 1985. The team wins its third straight MAC title, as well as the U of D Invite., Michigan Intercollegiates and CCC. The Hurons finish fourth at Districts and 17th at Nationals. Dominic Middleton and Clive Bonelle run 1-2 in the MAC. Middleton wins CCC.

1993

EMU wins its fourth straight MAC title and finishes second in the CCC and wins Michigan Intercollegiates, despite an injury-plagued season. Carl Warren and Jason Boothroyd give the Green and White its second straight 1-2 finish at MAC. Warren also wins Michigan Intercollegiate and CCC.

1994

EMU struggles all season with injuries and illnesses but manages to place second at the CCC. Dominic Middleton, Clint Verran and Jason Boothroyd finish 3-4-5 to help the Eagles win their fifth straight MAC title. Middleton becomes the fourth EMU runner to make All-MAC four times. Middleton and Boothroyd qualify for nationals. Middleton becomes third threetime All-District runner in school history.

1995

Eastern wins its first three meets, but inexperience slows the team down at the end of the season. The Eagles’ bid for a sixth-straight MAC crown is halted as they finish fifth despite Clint Verran and Jason Boothroyd going 1-3. They drop out of the top-10 at Districts for the first time since 1988. Verran wins Michigan Intercollegiate and Boothroyd wins

Eastern wins the Michigan Intercollegiates by 46 points, with four All-State runners. Runner-up at CCC. Finished fourth at MAC for its 13th straight top-five finish. Morris Giddens qualifies for the NCAA meet, the third time in the last five years Eastern has sent someone to nationals.

1997

The year that almost was. Eastern wins Michigan Intercollegiates, Central Collegiates by 37 points, and is ranked nationally the whole season. Five AllMAC runners are not enough as Miami edges them by four points for the MAC title. Injury and a couple off performances cost EMU a bid to nationals, as the team is fifth at Districts. Ben Reese heads to South Carolina for the NCAA Championships, the fourth time in the last six years that EMU has been represented at nationals. Clint Verran makes AllMAC for third time. Ben Reese wins CCC and MAC and Mike Franko wins Michigan Intercollegiates.

1998

Eastern competes in seven invitationals and places in the top-12 in all of them. Eastern wins the University of Detroit-Mercy Invitational and the Michigan Intercollegiates. Eastern’s runners all finish in the top-44 at the Mid-American Conference Championships, but it is not enough to seize the win; Miami wins by three points. Ben Reese, Aaron Bartee and Lee Shaw make All-MAC. Bob Parks is awarded MAC Coach of the Year.

1999

Blake McDowell won the Michigan Intercollegiate and the Central Collegiate Championships on his way to winning the 1999 Mid-American Conference title. McDowell earned first-team All-MAC honors. He became the 10th runner in EMU history to win the conference championship. A potentially good season did not materialize as Ben Reese, Chris Chiaro and Ryan Desgrange were ill and Aaron Bartee was injured for the majority of the season.

2007

The Eastern Michigan University men’s cross country team won its third consecutive Mid-American Conference cross country title and its 13th in school history. The Eagles totaled 31 points to best runnerup Miami, who had 50 points. This was only the second time in school history that the Eagles won three consecutive conference titles. The Green and White won five straight from 1990 through 1994. The Eagles, who joined the MAC in 1972, are now a perfect 4-0 when Central Michigan has hosted the MAC Championships. The Eagles had all juniors score and had three in the top seven to claim first team All-MAC and two additional runners earning second team All-MAC honors. The Eagles, with one senior, six juniors, one sophomore and one freshman, scored all nine runners in the top 30, with five being named to the All-MAC squads. Josh Perrin became the 12th individual and 16th overall winner for the Eagles, taking the victory with a time of 24:33, after finishing second in 2006. Josh Karanja took third, while David Brent took fifth to earn firstteam All-MAC honors. Curtis Vollmar and Kyle Mena took home second-team All-MAC honors, while head coach John Goodridge took home Coach of the Year. Two weeks later at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, the Eagles took seventh place as a team and Josh Karanja finished eighth overall, earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Championship where he finished 150th.

The Eagles won their second straight Mid-American Conference Championship title, giving them their 12th title in school history. Corey Nowitzke was MVP of the competition, placing first overall with a time of 26:52.6. Nowitzke also captured the top spot at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional with a time of 30:57.94, leading his team to a fifth place finish. Coach John Goodridge was once again named Coach of the Year in the MAC. A total of six athletes were named All-MAC, finishing in the top 14.

2004

The Eastern Michigan cross country team opened the season with a first place finish at the Detroit Titan Invitational. The Eagles were runners up at the MAC Championships for the second straight year and were led by All-MAC First Team selection Gavin Thompson, who won the 8,000-meter beating 95 participants with a time of 23.39.9. The Eagles also placed ninth out of 32 teams at the NCAA Great Lakes Regional with Thompson finishing with a time of 30.12.0 to win the 10,000-meter individual. Thompson closed out the season finishing third at the NCAA championships 10,000 meter individual race with a time of 29.17.4. The Eagles began their season with a victory at the Indiana State invitational on September 11. Corey Nowitzke and Alan Walker captured first and second place, with times of 24:58.57 and 25:34.56, respectively. The team competed in eight events throughout the course of the season, including the MAC Championships where Corey Nowitzke finished in fifth place overall with a time of 25:04.80.

Eastern Michigan captured its 11th overall MidAmerican Conference Championship and its first since 2000. Corey Nowitzke and Neal Naughton finished second and fifth with times of 24 :25 and 24:46, respectively. Including a great finish in the MAC, the Eagles also placed fifth in the NCAA Great Lakes Regional, and then advanced to the NCAA Championship, where they placed 24th overall. Nowitzke was the top runner for the team in that race, placing 38th with a time of 30:33.5. In addition, coach John Goodridge was named Coach of the Year.

2008 Preview

2002

For the first time, an Eastern Michigan’s cross country runner took home the national championship. Boaz Cheboiywo won by an impressive 19 seconds, breaking the previous course record by seven seconds, to claim the title. Cheboiywo won all five races in which he competed. The team had a tremendous season setting a MAC Championship record for the lowest winning point total en route to the school’s 10th MAC Championship. The team also was making national news, at one point the team was ranked as high as 15th place in the national rankings. The Eastern Michigan cross country team finished the year great by placing third at the NCAA Championships. This is the highest place an EMU team has finished since becoming a NCAA Division I school. They came into the NCAA Championships after finishing second in the MAC and placed second at the Great Lakes Regional. Eastern had a strong performance at the Regional with Boaz Cheboiywo and Gavin Thompson finishing first and second overall. The team also took first place at the Michigan Intercollegiate and EMU Classic while finishing second at the Roy Griak Invitational.

The Eagles finished 10th out of 29 teams at the NCAA Regional with five out of seven runners placing in the top 100. Corey Nowitzke receives an All Mid-American Conference selection.

Eastern wins its ninth Mid-American Conference Championship. Coach Parks was honored by being named MAC Coach of the Year. Blake McDowell won the Central Collegiate Championships on his way to winning the 2000 Mid-American Conference title. McDowell continued his stellar season, finishing second at the NCAA Cross Country Great Lakes regional and so did the EMU men’s team. The team finished 20th at the 2000 NCAA Cross Country Championships in Ames, Iowa. Blake McDowell was Eastern’s top individual, finishing 43rd, earning All-American honors. McDowell was the first EMU runner since 1974 to earn such honors. Bob Parks was named Great Lakes Regional Coach of the Year.

Our History

Founded in 1849, when the state of Michigan was just 12 years old, Michigan State Normal School was designated by the state legislature as the first institution to educate teachers to serve the public schools. The University thus began, somewhat humbly, as the sixth teacher education institution in the nation. A campus that today comprises more than 800 acres was once a four-acre plot with one building and two programs of study – a classical course and an English Course. The school’s name changed several times – to Michigan State Normal College in 1899; to Eastern Michigan College in 1956; and finally to Eastern Michigan University in 1959. During its first 100 years, the institution certified thousands of teachers and developed the broad-based curricula that ultimately prepared it for university status. Within that new university, three colleges emerged: Education, Arts and Sciences and the Graduate School. The University has since expanded three more times; adding the College of Business in 1964, the College of Health and Human Services in 1975 and the College of Technology in 1980. More recently Eastern Michigan has developed Extended Programs that include Continuing Education, the Centers for Corporate Training, the World College and numerous community-focused institutes. The University has enhanced its learning environment through structural initiatives during the past several years. Recent construction includes the Terrestrial and Aquatic Research Facility (1998), the Convocation Center (1998), the Bruce T. Halle Library (1998), the John W. Porter College of Education Building (1999), the Everett L. Marshall College of Health and Human Services Building (2000), the Village residence hall (2001), University House (2003), and new Student Center (2006).

March 28, 1849: State Legislature passed Act No. 138 entitled “An Act to Establish a State Normal School.”

1915: First U.S. teacher’s college to establish training for teachers of the disabled.

Sept. 9, 1994: The mascot “Swoop” is officially adopted.

March 29, 1853: Michigan State Normal School opens, offering two programs of study, a “classical course” and an “English course.” 1854: Michigan State Normal School holds first commencement, with three graduates. Sept. 1881: The student newspaper, the Normal News, is founded as a monthly. 1890: MSNS is first Michigan institution to establish a department of geography. Oct. 22, 1896: Theodore Roosevelt visits Michigan State Normal School. Sept. 15, 1897: The student newspaper is renamed the Normal College News, which comes out twice a month. 1897: MSNS is first U.S. teacher’s college to become a four-year institution. April 28, 1899: Michigan State Normal School is renamed Michigan State Normal College. 1900: Student athletes unofficially adopt the nickname Normalites. Athletes could wear either a “Y” for Ypsilanti or an “N” for Normal.

July 1, 1956: Michigan State Normal College becomes Eastern Michigan College. July 6, 1956: The student newspaper is renamed the Eastern Echo, a weekly publication. June 1, 1959: Eastern Michigan College is renamed Eastern Michigan University. 1959: College of Education is established. 1959: College of Arts and Sciences is established. Oct. 13, 1960: Senator John F. Kennedy visits Eastern Michigan University 1964: College of Business is established. 1975: College of Health and Human Services is established. 1980: College of Technology is established. 1990: Eastern Michigan University begins first phase of a $213-million investment in campus renovations.

Oct. 30, 1996: President Bill Clinton visits EMU to present a speech on women in the business community. Sept. 20, 1997: A “beaming ceremony” is hosted to celebrate construction of the new Convocation Center. June 1, 1998: Opening of the $41-million Bruce T. Halle Library. Oct. 9, 1998: Official dedication of the Bruce T. Halle Library. Jan. 1, 1999: Eastern Michigan University begins a year-long celebration of its sesquicentennial. May 2000: President Bill Clinton delivers the commencement address at Eastern Michigan University’s Convocation Center. Sept. 21, 2004: Ground Breaking Ceremony for New $37.5-million EMU Student Center.

Jan. 30, 1991: Board of Regents approve changing the Huron name and logo.

May 14, 2008: Dr. Susan Martin appointed the 22nd president of EMU by a unanimous vote of the EMU Board of Regents.

May 22, 1991: Board of Regents approve new EMU logo and nickname - the Eagles.

July 7, 2008: Dr. Susan Martin begins her role as EMU President.

Eastern Michigan University Where We’re Located

Eastern Michigan University is located in historic Ypsilanti, about 10 miles east of Ann Arbor, 40 miles west of Detroit and just 20 minutes from Detroit Metropolitan Airport. It is an area rich in academic, research, technological and recreational resources. The University also has sites in Livonia, Jackson, Traverse City, Flint, Detroit and Monroe. EMU’s 800 plus-acre campus of scenic flora and wooded areas includes 18 miles of walkways and jogging trails and has 122 buildings throughout the academic and athletic campuses. Eagle Crest – Eastern Michigan’s conference center, golf course and resort – is located on the banks of nearby Ford Lake. Recently named “A Cool City,” by Michigan’s Governor Jennifer Granholm, Ypsilanti plays a leading role in industry and education. The city and the University have forged close ties that have lasted 159 years.

Enrollment Profile

With nearly 23,000 students, EMU provides a rich learning environment for the campus community. The University currently has approximately 17,000 undergraduates and 5,000 graduate students. Our students represent 45 states and 93 foreign countries. Of undergraduate students, 69 percent are full time and 60 percent are women. The most popular majors are education, business, social sciences and history, science and engineering, English, and the health professions. EMU’s population is approximately 70 percent white; 16 percent black; 3 percent international; 6 percent undeclared; 2.5 percent Asian-American; 2 percent Hispanic and 0.5 percent Native-American. Eastern Michigan offers a number of special academic programs to help students succeed. These include the Honors College; the Holman Learning Center; distance learning; accelerated format programs; online, weekend and evening programs and courses; American Humanics certification; the World College Study Abroad Tours; a specialized master’s degree program for corporations offered onsite; a double master’s degree; online technologies for education and training through the Centers for Corporate Training; and EMU Worldwide. With more than 200 academic and social organizations, an extensive intramural sports program, 21 NCAA Division I-A sports and numerous cultural activities from which to choose, EMU students have diverse opportunities to become involved in campus life. Students’ oncampus housing choices range from traditional dormitory-style rooms to apartments and include living/learning center options.

In 1849, with the passage of Act No. 138, the Senate and House of Representatives of the State of Michigan formally paved the way for the establishment of Michigan State Normal School, with the exclusive purposes of instructing persons in the art of teaching; providing a good common school education; and giving instruction in the mechanic arts, husbandry, agricultural chemistry and the laws of the United States. Since its inception, Eastern Michigan, first as a Normal School, then as a College and finally as a University, has grown and developed to respond to the ever-changing needs of society. Over the years, EMU has educated thousands of sons and daughters of Michigan, the nation, and the world. The University currently serves nearly 23,000 students who are pursuing undergraduate, graduate, specialist, doctoral and certificate degrees in the arts, sciences and professions. In all, more than 200 majors, minors and concentrations are delivered through the University’s Colleges of Arts and Sciences; Business; Education; Health and Human Services; Technology, and its graduate school. Eastern Michigan University employs about 689 full-time faculty and 1,100 staff members. Ninetyfour percent of EMU professors have doctoral degrees or terminal degrees in their field. Since its founding in 1849, Eastern Michigan has provided quality services to the residents of Ypsilanti, Washtenaw County, the State of Michigan and other states and nations. EMU’s total impact on the Michigan economy of an estimated $3 billion annually reflects a return of more than $30 for each dollar received from the state. The University’s total impact on the Michigan economy results in a contribution of $115 million in state tax revenue. Thus, EMU’s impact on state government tax revenue is $1.25 in taxes for each dollar received from the state.

Eastern Michigan is making an impact nationally by channeling its academic research as a means of solving real-world problems. EMU currently has 14 research institutes and centers that focus on community building and civic engagement, quality, community and regional development, small business development, geospatial education, textiles, export assistance and product development. EMU is well known for merging theory and practice for the benefit of the community. Applied research leads to new knowledge, new jobs and new business. Annually, the university receives about $15 million in revenues for sponsored research and community service activities.

Dr. Susan Martin EMU President

Dr. Susan Martin was named the 22nd president of Eastern Michigan University May 14, 2008. She is the first female president in EMU’s 160-year history. Martin officially took office July 7. “I am thrilled to be chosen for the honor of leading this great university, which has a strong history of excellent education and a bright future,” said Martin. Before coming to EMU, Martin was the provost and vicechancellor of academic affairs at the University of Michigan – Dearborn. The majority of Martin’s higher education career was at Grand Valley State University, where she taught and published as a

professor of accounting and taxation. Martin served as director of the master of taxation program, director of international business programs, and chair of the accounting and taxation department. In June 2001, Martin joined the GVSU provost’s office and served in roles as assistant, associate, and executive associate vice president of academic affairs. One of her major duties in that office was to help manage the $154 million budget for the Academic Affairs Division. Before GVSU, Martin was deputy state treasurer for

the Bureau of Local Government Services for Michigan from June 1981-June 1984. She also was the commissioner of revenue for the state of Michigan from 1985-1988. Martin is chair of the State of Michigan Hospital Finance Authority, originally appointed by former Gov. Blanchard and then reappointed by Governors Engler and Jennifer Granholm. She also was appointed by Gov. Granholm to serve as her ex-officio representative on The Detroit Medical Center Financial Emergency Task Force in 2003-2004. Martin received her doctorate in accounting from Michigan State University in 1988 and her master’s degree in accounting from MSU in 1976. She earnedher bachelor’s degree from Central Michigan University in 1971. Martin is married and has three children.

EMU Board of Regents The Board of Regents is the governing body of Eastern Michigan University. Its current format was created when the State of Michigan ratified a new constitution, Jan. 6, 1964. The Board comprises eight regents who are appointed to eight-year terms by the governor.The current EMU Regents are Thomas W. Sidlik, chair; Roy Wilbanks, vice chair; Floyd Clack; Gary D. Hawks; Philip A. Incarnati; Mohamed Okdie; Francine Parker; and James F. Stapleton. “Other institutions of higher education established by law having authority to grant baccalaureate degrees shall each be governed by a board of control which shall be a body corporate. The board shall have general supervision of the institution and the control and direction of all expenditures from the institution’s funds. It shall, as often as necessary, elect a president of the institution under its supervision. He shall be the principal executive officer of the institution and be ex-officio a member of the board without the right to vote. The board may elect one of its members or may designate the president to preside at board meetings. Each board of control shall consist of eight members who shall hold office for terms of eight years, not more than two of which shall expire in the same year, and who shall be appointed by the governor by and with the advice and consent of the Senate. Vacancies shall be filled in like manner.”

Floyd Clack Floyd Clack was appointed

by Governor Granholm in June 2005 to fill the seat vacated by Steven G. Gordon, and then reappointed to a full term in January of 2007. Clack was a member of the Genesee County Board of Commissioners (District 2) from 1996-2004 and is a former state representative, serving seven terms from 1982 – 1996. He also served Floyd Clack as a member of the Flint City Council from 1979 – 1982 and was a guidance counselor and teacher in the Flint Community Schools. He is a former president of the Flint NAACP. Mr. Clack received a master’s degree in counseling from EMU in 1972. He lives in Flint.

Thomas W. Sidlik Chair

Thomas W. Sidlik was appointed by Governor Granholm in December 2004 to replace Michael Morris with a term expiring December 2012. Sidlik was a member of the Board of Management of DaimlerChrysler AG from December 1998 Thomas Sidlik through August 2007, and was responsible for Global ProChair curement and Supply from 2003 through August 2007. Sidlik was Vice-Chairman of the National Minority Supplier Development Council and Chairman of the Council’s Executive Committee. He is Executive Sponsor of the Automobile Industry Action Group and Member of the Board of Overseers, Leonard N. Stern School of Business, New York University. Mr. Sidlik is a resident of Ann Arbor.

Roy E. Wilbanks Vice Chair

Roy E. Wilbanks was appointed to the Board of Regents by Governor Granholm in December 2004 to fill the seat vacated by Dr. Rosalind E. Griffin for a term ending in December 2012. Wilbanks was employed by Eastern Roy E. Wilbanks Michigan University in various roles such as: Assistant to Vice-Chair the President for Government and Community Relations, Vice President for University Relations and Secretary to the Board of Regents, Executive Vice President, Interim Chief Executive Officer and President and Chief Executive Officer of the Eastern Michigan Foundation. In 2004, he was inducted into the Ypsilanti High School Athletic Hall of Fame and, in 2003, he was awarded the John W. Porter Distinguished Service Award. Wilbanks earned a Master’s degree from Eastern Michigan University. Mr. Wilbanks serves as chair of the Athletic Affairs Committee and is a resident of Ypsilanti.

Gary D. Hawks was appointed by Governor Granholm in January 2007 to replace Sharon Rothwell, who resigned. Hawks was the vice president of University Relations at EMU from 1972-1981. He is appointed for a term expiring Dec. 31, 2010.

Philip A. Incarnati was appointed to the board by Governor John Engler in February, 1992, to fill the seat left vacant by John Burton. He was reappointed in 1994 for a term ending December, 2002. In December 2002, Governor Engler reappointed him for a term ending December 2010. Incarnati is president and chief executive officer for the McLaren Health Philip A. Care Corporation in Flint, Michigan. He is a member of the Incarnati following boards: Michigan Health and Hospital Association, Genesee Area Focus Council, Healthcare Council of MidMichigan, Genesee County Medical Control Authority, Flint Cultural Center, Greater Flint Health Coalition, Flint Area Medical Education Corporation, The One Hundred Club of Flint, Inc., HBO & Company and the Detroit Area CEO Exchange. Incarnati is an Eastern Michigan University alumnus with a bachelor of business administration degree in 1976 and a masters of business administration in 1982. He served as chair of the Board from 1995 to 2005. He is a resident of Clarkston.

Mohamed Okdie was appointed by Governor Granholm in December 2007 to replace Ismael Ahmed, who resigned. Okdie is a school social worker for Detroit Public School System. He is appointed for a term expiring Dec. 31, 2008. Prior to working for the Detroit Public School System, Okdie was a psychiatric social worker at Detroit Receiving Hospital and was a community liaison for Congressman John Conyers..

Francine Parker was appointed by Governor Granholm in January 2007 to replace Joseph Antonini, whose term expired in December 2006. Parker is president and CEO of Health Alliance Plan. She is appointed for a term expiring Dec. 31, 2014.

Director of Athletics Dr. Derrick Gragg

Dr. Derrick Gragg Athletics Director The mark of an exceptional athletics program is the progress that is made each year. Under the leadership of athletics director Dr. Derrick Gragg, the Eastern Michigan University department of athletics has done just that in his first two years at the helm. During Gragg’s first year at EMU, the department set a school and Mid-American Conference record by capturing a remarkable eight team conference titles, adding a league post-season crown and recording two runner-up finishes. The MAC-record eight team titles eclipsed the mark of six held jointly by Central Michigan (2003-04) and Western Michigan (1984-85). In the 2007-08 year, his second as athletics director, the Eagles secured the Reese Trophy which is awarded annually to the top overall men’s athletics program in the league. Eastern, which had won the Reese Trophy three previous times (1987-88, 1990-91 and 1995-96), followed up the record-breaking eight championships with four league regular-season titles and one MAC Tournament crown this past year. Gragg became EMU’s 11th athletic director after spending the previous six years at the University of Arkansas. He first joined the U of A in 2000 as an associate athletic director and was promoted to senior associate athletic director in 2003 and then to deputy athletic director. In his tenure at Arkansas, Gragg was involved in various areas including: athletic administration, sport program oversight, marketing, sports information, recruitment, budget, student-

athlete support, compliance, facilities and game management, fund-raising and research. During his career, Gragg has published several articles and editorials on intercollegiate athletics as well as a nationwide study on sports-related gambling. He is a former member of the NCAA’s Minority Opportunities & Interests Committee, having served as co-chair of the committee in 2004-05. Gragg also served as a member of the Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Northwest Arkansas Board of Directors and as a member of the American Heart Association, Northwest Arkansas Board of Directors. He currently serves as a member of the NCAA’s Academic/Eligibility/Compliance Cabinet and as a member of the NACDA Division IA Athletic Directors Scholarship Ad Hoc Steering Committee. Gragg also serves as cochair of the MAC track coaches group. A former collegiate wide receiver, Gragg lettered four years at Vanderbilt while earning his degree. He graduated with a bachelor’s in human development in 1992 and was a member of the Southeastern Conference Academic Honor Roll during his senior year. Gragg served from 1993 to 1995 as an academic counselor at his alma mater before adding the title of director of student life in his final year at Vanderbilt. During his time as a Commodore athletic

administrator, he coordinated student life and support programs as well as supervising the academic counseling programs for student-athletes. In 1995, Gragg was named director of compliance & operations at the University of Missouri. During his two years in Columbia, he was the game event manager for 10 Olympic sports programs and served on the Big 12 Compliance Coordinators Group during his last year as compliance coordinator at the university. Named assistant athletic director for compliance at Michigan in 1997, Gragg spent three years with oversight of the UM compliance department. While serving in Ann Arbor, Gragg also earned his master’s degree in sports administration from Wayne State University. He also served on the faculty at WSU, teaching intercollegiate sport administration and sports marketing classes. He earned his doctorate in higher education administration from the U of A in May of 2004 and also taught two undergraduate courses during his tenure there as an athletic administrator. Gragg is a proud member of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. He is also a member of the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the Black Coaches and Administrators (BCA). Gragg and his wife, Sanya, have a daughter, DeSha, 14, and two sons, Avery, 11, and Phillip-Raymond, 7.

The Eastern Michigan University Sports Medicine Department has a long history and reputation for excellence in the health care of student-athletes and the education of athletic training students. Founding practitioners Gary Strickland, Ron Venis and Dr. Wally Roeser envisioned a goal of first-class prevention, management and rehabilitation of athletic injuries for all student-athletes. Although the department continues to grow, its primary mission remains the same. More than 500 student-athletes participating in intercollegiate athletics receive comprehensive health care from an expansive sports medicine team. The Eastern Michigan University Sports Medicine staff is led by Dr. Tara MasterHunter, Dr. Zoe Foster, Dr. David Alvarez, Dr. George Pujalte, Dr. Wally Roeser, Dr. Bruce Miller, Dr. Don Wurtzel and Head Athletic Trainer Steve Nordwall. Additionally, the staff consists of two primary care sports medicine fellows, three full-time staff athletic trainers, two full-time athletic training clinical educators, five graduate assistant athletic trainers and the team dentist. Our sports medicine staff works in conjunction with various medical professionals within the community who provide nutritional, dental, vision and other specialized services for our

student-athletes. At Eastern Michigan University, the philosophy of the Sports Medicine staff is two-fold: to provide a high standard of medical care through effective preventive and management programs, and to facilitate an effective post-injury rehabilitation process for a safe return to competition. In all cases, the ultimate well-being of each student-athlete is considered our number one priority, not only while they compete at Eastern Michigan University, but during their lifetime as well. The Sports Medicine staff operates out of three campus athletic training facilities in the Convocation Center, Bowen Field House and the Rynearson Stadium team building. Each of the athletic training facilities contain taping and practice preparation areas, treatment and rehabilitative equipment, and physician exam areas that allow for daily, on-campus physician care for athletic injuries and illnesses. Our facilities provide an appropriate environment for the care of our student-athletes and serves as a proper clinical education venue for our athletic training students In the fall of 1997, the Athletic Education Training Program became accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs. Students who are accepted into the education program must demonstrate not only excellence in the athletic training room, but in the classroom as well. The academic workload of the education program is based heavily in the sciences and includes courses in human anatomy, physiology, physics, chemistry, biomechanics, kinesiology and exercise physiology. Academic and clinical instructors monitor the athletic training students as they progress through the required course work which includes five clinical experience courses. In their final semester each athletic training student completes a 15-week internship at an affiliated internship site. Upon completion of the program, all athletic training students must pass the national certification examination prior to advancing into their careers or continuing on in their education as an athletic trainer. It is our ongoing mission to constantly re-evaluate the roles and responsibilities of our program in order to best exceed the

expectation and needs of our student population. The interaction between the sports medicine staff, the student-athletes and the athletic training education program creates a productive atmosphere which enhances both the student-athlete experience and athletic training students’ clinical education.

EMU Strength and Conditioning An eagle by definition is a large bird of prey noted for its strength, size, keenness of vision and powers of flight. These are skills that can only develop in the right setting and environment. At Eastern Michigan University, it is the job of Head Strength and Conditioning Coach Mike Szerszen to guide student-athletes down the path that will help them develop those and other skills that will allow them to excel in competition. The main focus of the EMU strength and conditioning program is to develop the complete student-athlete. This is achieved through a program that is not based solely on weight training, but rather on the development of all aspects of athletic performance. Everything that is incorporated into the training program is geared towards enhancing success on the playing field. Areas of focus include speed, agility, strength, quickness, flexibility, explosive power, sports nutrition and mental toughness. One major area of focus is the development of running speed and quickness. Great focus is placed on strength development, flexibility and proper running mechanics. The goal is to produce strong physical athletes who improve their foot speed and quickness. While every athletic program lifts during the year, EMU student-athletes will also participate in year-round conditioning. The strength and conditioning staff push the student-athletes to excel throughout a continually physically and mentally demanding program. “We believe highly competitive athletes should never get out-of-shape,” Szerszen said. “Our workouts are intense and designed to challenge our athletes to surpass levels they have not yet achieved. Because of this aggressive training we help develop not only a physically tougher athlete, but also a mentally tougher one who excels in competition. Our goal is simple ... to be the best conditioned and physically toughest team in the country.” Physically developing athletes is a yearround endeavor. During the season, football players at EMU will spend as much time with the strength and conditioning coaches as they do on the field with their position coaches. “A highly motivated athlete is a program’s greatest asset,” Szerszen said. “We strive for excellence both mentally and physically. We have individual goal meetings prior to each segment of our training. Short and long-term goals are set and we work diligently to achieve them. “Our athletes at EMU are second to none in terms of their hard work and effort,” Szerszen added. “We work hard, but have fun in the process. The camaraderie and work ethic they develop in the weight room carries over directly to their success on the field.” Strength and conditioning at EMU is a full-time commitment. There is no such thing as being a part-time champion. At EMU, the eventual goal of all athletes is to be successful on the Mid-American Conference and national

times that the student-athletes must meet.

Strength Training

This is the foundation of all of our training. Improvements in all areas begin here. We use systematic periodization planning when developing our strength program. We use many compound movements and isolate muscle groups with machines and specific dumbbell exercises. We focus on working many different joint angles. We use as many different training variables and a mix of training philosophies to attain our goals. By training in this manner we can avoid being one-dimensional which will help us eliminate plateaus and staleness in training. Core lifts include: bench press, squat and hang clean. Many injury prevention exercises are implemented as well.”

Student-athletes will sit down three times per year to set individual goals for the end of winter conditioning, summer conditioning and post-season. Each athlete has his own personal goal booklet to monitor gains. The goals are used as a method of monitoring the student-athletes and providing them with a target to attain in training to help improve their performance on the field. Student-athletes will be tested three times per year. These tests help our staff to evaluate their strengths and weaknesses. Testing will include the following at various points in the year: bench press, squat, hang clean, vertical jump, 1.5-mile run, 16 x 110 yard sprints, 15 second bag jumps, 20-yard shuttle, 10-yard sprint, 225-lb bench press reps max, body fat percentage, sit and reach flexibility, height and weight.

Speed and Agility

We believe speed and agility drills should be utilized every time we work out. We incorporate some form of speed or agility drills into every workout. The reason for this philosophy is to provide constant reinforcement so that we can achieve maximum speed and quickness. Speed and agility is separated into long and short distances. Examples of speed drills include resistive runs with harnesses and chutes, stance and start drills, running mechanics, form running and competitive sprints. Some of our agility drills include: cone drills, speed ladders, dot and t-drills, 20-yard shuttles, ladder runs, reactive drills, jump rope and quick feet drills.

Conditioning

We believe that great athletes should never get out-of-shape. We will condition year-round. Of course, the intensity of the conditioning will be dictated by what we are doing during that period of training or at that point in the season. During the season, conditioning will be short and brief as it will be during the winter conditioning period. During the summer preseason training period, conditioning will be very intense as we prepare for the season and as we acclimate for the heat of two-a-day practices during August. Forms of conditioning include: 1.5 mile run, 110-yard sprints, step down sprints ranging in distances from 100 yards to 10 yards, position specific conditioning, gassers and half gassers, and 300-yard shuttle and ladder runs. Student-Athletic Support While success on the field is important, success in the classroom is the number one priority. Student Athlete Support Services (SASS) is dedicated to the academic success of the Eagles. Led by Erin Burdis and her staff of counselors, SASS strives to make sure every student-athlete finds academic success at Eastern. Our philosophy is to offer an academic support program, integrated with the University, that will assist all student-athletes with their transition into college. This all-encompassing support continues throughout each studentathlete’s collegiate career, until the day he or she receives a diploma, lands a job or enters graduate school. Being proactive rather than reactive, our staff does not wait for an academic crisis to occur. We gather important background information and build an academic profile on each student-athlete, assessing his or her needs in advance. Services provided through SASS include the following: programs that focus on studentathletes’ special needs, monitoring academic performance, providing learning assistance, assisting with registration procedures, assisting in monitoring athletic eligibility, providing priority registration and making sure that athletes are advised about current NCAA, MAC and University rules and regulations. Freshmen and transfer student-athletes encounter a major transition when making the switch from high school or community college to a university. These students, while adjusting to their new routines, receive extra attention and support. College is not easy. But with hard work and dedication from both the student-athlete and the support staff, the student-athlete can have a successful college experience. The success of Eastern’s studentathletes hinges on their willingness to seek assistance from SASS as well as other University student services. SASS staff members continually refer student-athletes to the admissions office, Academic Advising Center, Career Services Center, health services, the records

office, financial aid and The Holman Learning Center. Faculty members also provide assistance to student-athletes through advising in course selection and providing additional help with courses when requested.

Academic Success

Entering the 2008-2009 academic year, Eastern Michigan University student-athletes continue to excel on the playing field and in the classroom. The athletics department cumulative GPA is currently at Student-athletes from the men’s and women’s basketa 3.053 after the 2008 winter ball teams joined forces for the third annual EMU Pride semester. The baseball team Day. leads the men’s teams with a 3.036, while the women’s tennis Student-Athlete Advisory Council team leads the women’s side with a 3.557. While SAAC does what it can to help support the community, it puts the student-athletes at EMU first. It is always looking for ways to increase student attendance at games, as well as provide better communication between teachers and student-athletes who have to miss class for competition. Run by student-athletes who understand the issues that they face and want to make a difference, SAAC has become a very successful organization in the past few years.

Important Questions for Prospective Student-Athletes from Melody Reifel Werner, Associate Athletic Director for Compliance

When do I become a prospect? You become a “prospective student-athlete” (PSA) when you start ninth-grade classes. You become a “recruited prospective student-athlete” at a particular college if any coach approaches you (or any member of your family) about enrolling and participating in athletics at that college. Activities by coaches that cause you to become a recruited prospective student-athlete are: (1) providing you with an official visit to campus; (2) placing more than one telephone call to you or any other member of your family; or (3) visiting you or any other member of your family anywhere other than the college campus. When can coaches talk to me and watch me play? There are many specific NCAA rules which dictate when a coach may talk to you or watch you play. These rules vary depending on the sport and the time of year. Often, calls are limited to a certain month or to certain times during the month. To get more information on what these rules are and which ones apply to you, please visit ncaa. org or contact Melody Reifel Werner at 734.487.2327. What about coaches contacting me? A contact is any face-to-face meeting between a university coach and you or your parents. Also, any such face-to-face meeting that is prearranged or that takes place on your campus, at an organized competition or at a practice involving you or your high school, prep school, two-year college or all-star team shall be considered a contact, regardless of the conversation. Currently in all sports other than football, college coaches may contact you off the college campus no more than three times. However, a college coach may visit your high school (with the approval of your high school principal) only once a week during a contact period.

What are evaluations? An evaluation is any off-campus activity used to assess your academic qualifications or athletics ability, which includes visiting your high school (during which no contact occurs) or watching you practice or compete at any site. Currently in all sports other than football and basketball, a college coach is limited to seven opportunities (contacts and evaluations combined) to recruit you and not more than three of the seven opportunities may be off-campus contacts. Once you sign a National Letter of Intent, you may be evaluated an unlimited number of times by a college coach from the college with which you have signed. When can a coach send me letters and emails? In sports other than men’s basketball, a member institution may not provide recruiting materials to a prospect (including general correspondence related to athletics) until Sept. 1 at the beginning of the prospect’s junior year in high school. In the sport of men’s basketball, an institution may not provide recruiting materials to a prospect (including general correspondence related to athletics) until June 15 at the conclusion of the prospect’s sophomore year in high school. Are there rules for boosters? In addition to general recruiting regulations, no alumni, boosters or representatives of a college’s athletics interests can be involved in your recruitment. There may be no phone calls or letters from boosters. If an EMU booster is contacting you, please call the EMU Office of Compliance as soon as possible at 734. 487.2327.
