Greetings » 50th Anniversary

The SLP program’s 50th Anniversary celebration in September brought SLP students, alumni, current and emeritus faculty together to share stories from the past and look forward to the future. ASHA President, Dr. Tommie Robinson, delivered the keynote address and Dr. Rick Merson, MSHA President, paid tribute to the program. During his inspiring keynote address, Dr. Robinson recognized the founding fathers of the program: Dave Palmer and Wayne Fulton. Alumni from 12 different states traveled back to campus to join us for our celebration. Dr. Dorothy Grant and Shirley Soltman, two of the program’s first graduates in 1960, reminisced about the early years of the program. We also welcomed back Faculty Emeriti Thelma Albritton, Angelo Angelocci, Marge Chamberlain, Suzanne Palasek (for her husband Jim), and Ralph Rupp. Thank you for sharing in our celebration! If you missed the events of September 24 and 25, please know you are always welcome to schedule a visit.

» Program Update

This year both our graduate and undergraduate curricula were revised to reflect changes in the profession and in the way we prepare students. The graduate program now totals 60 credit hours including two on-site semester long clinics and two externships in the community. Disorders courses such as voice, stuttering, and phonological impairments are now also offered at the graduate

» Ways to Engage We were excited to see so many alumni back in town for the Speech-Language Pathology 50th Anniversary September 24-25, 2010. The high attendance at the reunion has inspired us to begin the process of forming an alumni group through the EMU Alumni Association. We are looking for a handful of dedicated alums who would like to help get the organization off the ground. If you would like to make an impact and take lead in the establishment of the first ever EMU SLP alumni group, please contact Amanda Decker at adecker5@emich.edu with your information and the ways you would like to get involved.

level. Our new undergraduate curriculum focuses on basics of communication sciences and disorders and also provides broader information and experiences relative to behavior management and literacy development. Due to the demand for SLPs, we recently gained approval to expand our program and admissions. Another faculty search has been approved and is currently underway. Collaboration with the EMU Teachers of English as a Second Language (TESOL) began this past summer; several graduate SLP students served as “communication partners” for international students on campus. Our alumni base is expanding with graduates living and working in 42 of the 50 states. A number of our graduates are pursuing doctoral degrees, but most are pursuing clinical work in a variety of settings, including schools and healthcare.

» Program Initiatives

In order to maintain the quality of experience for SLP students, we are developing plans for a new state -of -the -art speech science lab, which will house the latest speech and voice assessment equipment, including a Kay Pentax Computerized Speech Lab with a Voice Range Profile, Multidimensional Voice Program, and a Phonatory Aerodynamic System. We also hope to develop a program of accent modification with input from our TESOL colleagues, which will allow our graduate students to hone their therapy skills.

An Unforgettable Event: SLP 50th September 24-25

In celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the SLP program, over 175 alumni, former and current faculty and staff and even a few current students came out to enjoy the two-day celebration. Friday evening featured a reception at the University House with special guest, EMU President Susan Martin and special guest Dr. Tommie Robinson. On Saturday, guests came back to tour campus and the Speech clinic, followed by a fantastic dinner in the EMU Student Center Ball Room.

Angelo Angelocci: Why I Give to EMU Investing in Tomorrow’s Leaders Angelo Angelocci is deeply connected to Eastern Michigan University, especially the Speech Language-Pathology program, teaching for 23 years before retiring in 1987. After retirement, he left a bequest to fund a scholarship for students studying to become special education teachers. Originally, my wife and I created a bequest to establish a scholarship to support SLP students. But a few years ago, I realized I wanted to see the fruits of my labor while I was still here. My financial advisors suggested that I begin gifting the amount that I was required to take from my individual retirement account. This was a win-win for me; I received a charitable deduction and was able work with the department and

the EMU Foundation to establish the criteria the scholarship in my family’s name. This process was very easy and I am so thrilled to have made this gift. It feels really good knowing I am helping students achieve their educational goals.

Please designate my gift to the:
