LIVERPOOL AUTHOR NATALIE REEVES BILLING talks to Lifestyle about her new best selling book, Ben And The Bug, has shot up to number one on Amazon’s Hot Best Sellers.

TELL US ABOUT BEN &

THE BUG I started working on Ben and the Bug as the UK entered lockdown. My social enterprise, Split Perspectives, was just a couple of weeks old. It’s ethos, to look at stories from alternative angles in order to increase wellbeing in children and family groups. I pondered over how I could apply that theory to the Coronavirus crisis, with families facing uncertainty, hemmed in together 24/7. I believe it alleviates fear and anxiety, while also giving factual guidance on basic hygiene.

WHERE DID YOU GET

THE IDEA FROM? I knew I wanted the Bug to be spiky and awkward-looking but in 32

a cute, goofy kind of way. I had the poem, The Owl and the Pussy Cat going around in my head, and I wrote to that pattern.

HOW LONG DID IT TAKE

YOU TO WRITE? This one was a pesky little rhyme. It took a bit longer than usual. A good few rewrites. All in all, about a week. But I was always tinkering with it right up until the moment I pressed print.

WERE YOU SURPRISED IT WENT TO NO 1 ON

AMAZON? I certainly was. I hadn’t launched the book yet, I had merely uploaded it and finalised the categories where it would live. I woke the next morning to find it at number one. I was about to start celebrating when I discovered Amazon was about to pull my books. For containing the words Coronavirus and Covid19. They were worried about fake news and incorrect science. They pulled the plug on my eBook. I was devastated. My heart and soul had gone into this work. The book covers basic hand hygiene, nothing much else, but nonetheless, as the process is automated. The decision will stand. It was a bittersweet day, and as my book climbs the charts in many categories, I know it’s living on borrowed time. I’ll need to find it another accessible home.

TELL ME ABOUT THE SOCIAL ENTERPRISE DELIVERING BOOKS TO SCHOOLS IN UNDERPRIVILEGED AREAS

Yes, sure. Split Perspectivz looks at life from different angles, to explore, to grow, to question, to learn. With a mix of funding, commercial sponsorships, workshops and events, I aim to visit schools in underfunded areas and offer enriched workshops and materials, bringing learning to life. Helping children to really get to know who they are. Storytelling is such a versatile tool. We can use it to illustrate any point. But more importantly, through writing things down, and letting our thoughts flow, we find out who we really are and what we believe.

AND WHAT WORKSHOPS DO YOU

RUN I ran a workshop in Toxteth just before lockdown called Carry Love. A group of young teens coming together to write and create art around knife crime. The idea is to look and deal with the root causes rather than the symptoms, catching it before it even starts. Preventative action. We are launching a book of the same name together. Seeing the work of those young people in print will make everything worthwhile. There are so many more in the pipeline, but any plans must, unfortunately, be put on hold until it is safe to resume.

HOW HAVE YOU COPED WITH LOCKDOWN AND HOW HAS IT AFFECTED

YOUR BUSINESS I’m lucky as I have a lot of garden space, so mentally, although I miss my friends and family, we have muddled through quite well. My business was markedly affected, as funding pots dried up, plans were put on hold, launches became digital and more costly as we tried to use PR to bridge the gap. More than half of an indie author’s income comes from school visits, parties, and events. A lot of work for a social entrepreneur comes from networking and meeting other like-minded people. During this period, income dropped to book sales only. My business, being fairly new, has not really been able to start yet.

Ben and the Bug

When Ben meets Bug at the swing park, they instantly become the best of friends. But when everyone around them gets sick, Ben begins to wonder about the identity of his strange new playmate. Ben and the Bug is for families looking for a friendly approach to opening up discussions around Coronavirus.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE CHILDREN WILL GET FROM YOUR BOOK

I hope families come away feeling thoroughly entertained, intrigued, and happy. If readers have learned a little something along the way, then that’s a bonus.

AND HOW DO YOU FEEL ABOUT BEING A PUBLISHED AUTHOR? HAS IT ALWAYS BEEN A

DREAM? I am absolutely thrilled. I only wish I could share it with my friends and family. Really share it. Internet drinks just do not cut it!

AUTHOR Lifestyle chats to.. DANIELLE HAMPSON Author of ‘Am I On The Spectrum?”

WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO

WRITE THE BOOK? I had the idea in my head for around 8 years after a close family member was diagnosed. What I began seeing in my clients as a psychotherapist was patterns of behaviour linking specific personality traits and behaviours to the autistic spectrum. No one could specifically tell me what the spectrum looked like and the autism doctor advised me to watch the big bang theory which wasn't particularly helpful. Once i linked certain behaviours to the autistic spectrum such as anxiety, depression, addiction, suicidal idealisations, anorexia, bullmenia, gender, domestic abuse and personality disorders such as borderline and bi polar. It started to make sense both to my clients and other people in industry. Science is slow to connecting these traits and there is a 25 year clinical gap before this information will be handed down to medical clinicians in practice.

WHAT DID YOU LEARN FROM WRITING THE

BOOK? As a late diagnosed dyslexic myself - this was a 36

huge challenge personally and professionally to structure the sentences and the grammatical English. You can have the best idea’s in the world but executing them is a whole different ball game. Id like to think I learnt how to make a complex subject more easily understood for a wider audience.

HOW LONG DID

IT TAKE? It took a year for me to write, I set myself a deadline of a chapter a month - as a single mum with an interest in 7 business it was a hard challenge.

WHAT DO YOU HOPE TO

ACHIEVE? My main reason for writing this book was to raise wider awareness of a complex condition. As more and more children are being diagnosed there are generations of parents, grandparents and great grandparents out there who possess these characteristics and don't understand if they have contributed to the situation. I have devised what the spectrum could look like to the average person and have colour coded it so its easier to understand with sections. No one could explain to me what the autistic spectrum looked like let alone what was it comprised of - so I believe in this book I’ve created a really useful tool.

HAVE YOU ANY PLANS TO

WRITE A SEQUEL? I do. I also have a few other book ideas going on in that brain of mine - so there's a lot going on that need to come out lol.

WHAT HAVE BEEN THE CHALLENGES YOU HAVE FACED RAISING CHILDREN

ON THE SPECTRUM? I think for me food was and still is a big issues with food sensitivities anorexia and bulmenic behaviours, I think meltdowns for any parent are always a big challenge, but most importantly we are who we are and our children are who they are and i hope with more understanding of the wider spectrum these challenging behaviours will be more easily recognised and by writing about them to help others is how I overcome these obstacles by greater understanding.

WANT TO ADD? Available to buy on Amazon £12.99 - Am I On The Spectrum? An Aspies Guide to the Autistic Spectrum I am on it and so are you!
