BACKGROUND INFORMATION AMANDLA EduFootball and Crime Prevention Programmes: AMANDLA Edufootball is a registered South African non-profit organisation that uses football leagues and weekly training structures as a platform to deliver holistic and educational life-skills sessions for youth. Specifically focusing on destabilised and/or non-existent family structures, AMANDLA targets youth living in children’s homes and/ or underprivileged communities. Due to the fact that a large portion of these participants also come from destitute socioeconomic backgrounds, they are at greater risk to become involved in criminal and gang-related activities. Therefore AMANDLA places particular importance on crime and violence prevention through the “Heads Up“ Programmes for girls and boys from the age of 8-16 years and the men’s Crime Prevention League. This “Night League” for young men over the age of 16 years runs every Friday and Saturday evening from 19h00 to midnight during peak crime hours in the community surrounding the Chris Campbell Memorial Field.

Background Khayelitsha: Located close to Cape Town lies Khayelitsha, with approximately two million inhabitants making it the largest single township in all of South Africa. High rates of assault and murder, an unemployment rate estimated somewhere between 50 and 70 percent as well as an extremely low average income are all daily realities for the residents of Khayelitsha.
