In response to your comments, the former La Terrazza restaurant has been reinvented and now welcomes you as the Kalypso Gardens, with an all new look and ambience. Our indoor bar has evolved and developed a distinct personality. Extended terraces constitute not only one of the largest outdoor seating areas on the island, but also offer you the best panoramic sea view in Cyprus, while our gardens were enriched with new greenery, including 50 new palm trees. Couples and families, adults, teens and children have all inspired us to review our hotel entertainment options. SWEEPING SUCCESS The most recent awards the Amathus Hotel proudly received were ‘multi-flavoured’ and particularly rewarding. Starting with the trade, the hotel earned Booking.com’s Guest Review Award with a remarkable score of 9.2 out of 10! Success was also registered in the beautiful form of the Pevonia European Destination Spa of the Year award for 2016, based on multiple criteria, from performance and training to customer nominations. On the green side of life, the Amathus was the European Hotel Managers Association’s choice for the EHMA Sustainability Award 2017, thanks to the hotel’s ‘Green Luxury’ project which was recognized as a best practice for all sea resorts in Europe. The Archbishopric of Cyprus expressed its own appreciation by granting the hotel its Golden Protector of the Environment award. Even in terms of sports, the Amathus scored high, winning the Pancyprian Amateur Football Championship, when current and former members of staff (or their children) beat the Water Board of Nicosia last October. Congratulations to all!

It follows that the forward-looking Amathus welcomes technology and has recently adopted it in three variations - for television, the hotel website, and a must-have Amathus mobile app. As websites have become a standard point of contact, two new modules have been added to the Amathus website: one to allow online check-in before arrival, and the second for the hotel’s loyalty scheme, featuring the benefits and privileges granted to repeat guests. At the hotel, new smart TV sets with the industry leading MCOM system have been installed in all rooms. Switch on your TV not only to watch a wide range of channels, but also to access detailed information about all hotel facilities, dining and entertainment options. This environment-friendly alternative to paper directories and printed messages ensures that you have up-to-date information at your fingertips. In sync with the mindset and lifestyle of today’s travellers, the Amathus now offers you a real winner: the new interactive Amathus app. The free download is available from both the App Store and PlayStore and allows you to communicate with the Amathus even when you’re on the go. Download it anytime – even before or after your holiday – and you can always check out hotel info from room descriptions to restaurant menus, but also find out where to go and what to do in Limassol and its surroundings during your stay. The best part of the app comes after you make your hotel reservation. Your confirmation email will include your personal username and password so you can customize your booking: make restaurant or spa reservations, request airport transfers, special dietary requirements, baby-sitting service, extra pillows or flowers in your room, and check in online before your arrival. Pevonia, a leading skincare line exclusively for elite spas and professional aestheticians, has been the signature line of the Amathus Spa since 2009. Its tagline, ‘Nature’s answer to perfect skin’, reflects the company’s firm belief that the most effective skincare ingredients are provided by the safest source on earth: nature.
However, even the best product is only as good as the professionals who use it. This is where the Amathus Spa has excelled. Spa Manager Xenios Orphanides heads a team of three receptionists and 11 therapists from Thailand, Bulgaria, Lithuania, the Czech Republic, Greece and of course Cyprus. Xenios says: “Our philosophy is to be fully focused on each individual guest… Every guest should be treated like a king…” Perhaps that is why the Royal Thai Massage, first introduced at the Amathus in 2008, consistently ranks as the most popular treatment on the Spa Menu. “We have guests who have enjoyed a Royal Thai Massage in prestigious hotels around the world, and they tell us that the one we offer is the best,” says Xenios. Very different but equally recommended is the Thai Massage, which most guests remember as the deep tissue massage that is based on unique and ancient techniques, and is performed on the floor. TRAINED TO SERVE Guests who visit the hotel regularly are always delighted with the renovations and changes they ‘discover’ every year, but also happy to see familiar faces whenever they return. People, it seems, are the one constant at the hotel. However, they too undergo ‘upgrades’ of sorts… also known as professional training. Most staff training courses and seminars are held during the slower winter months. In fact, last winter, when the hotel was closed for renovations from 22 January till mid-March, the training schedule was more concentrated than ever. During the first three months of 2017, the hotel organized over 50 in-house staff seminars, with emphasis on soft skills for front liners who interact with guests, and technical skills for teams that work behind the scenes, such as the kitchen and maintenance staff. Team leading chefs were also sent to the best catering schools abroad, in England, Greece and France, to assimilate new cooking techniques. With a ratio of at least two staff per guest room during the summer, that amounts to 480 individuals across all departments. Andreas Georgiou, the hotel’s General Manager, follows a very pragmatic rule of thumb: Wherever a guest might be on the hotel premises, including the vast gardens and the beach, at least one staff member should always be in sight. More importantly, that person must be adequately trained to respond, and respond effectively, to any guest query, request or need. This philosophy involves a significant investment; but it’s an investment with great returns for everyone. As Andreas says: “You either pay for training, or for the lack of it.”

A SENSE OF RESPONSIBILITY ‘Environmental awareness’ is the buzzword of our times; and the Amathus has converted these words into serious – often costintensive – action that helps the local community, the tourism industry, and Cyprus as a whole. Since 2004, the hotel has been implementing its Environmental Quality System, which culminated in an elaborate installation for geothermal heating of all pools – kids pool, indoor pool, private pools of Junior Suites – excluding only the main outdoor pool. As a matter of principle, new sustainability measures are examined and adopted wherever possible. Such commitment is reflected in the growing number of ‘green’ tourism awards that bear the hotel’s name, such as the Travelife certification, the Green Hotel of Europe 2015 (European Hospitality Awards), the EHMA Sustainability Award 2017, and the Golden Protector of the Environment, a local award granted by the Archbishopric of Cyprus. In this regard, the Amathus is clearly ahead of other hotels in Cyprus that are just beginning to tackle the complex procedures and management issues that accompany such deep-rooted change. Apart from the now standard recycling of material waste, the hotel’s environmental management team is looking into innovative measures that can be introduced without compromising luxury. Indeed, as tour operators and guests express their appreciation of ‘green’ hotels, the Amathus is considering initiatives that will give guests the opportunity to make an active contribution.

Not so long ago, the Guest Relations desk in the lobby was the exclusive territory of Greek born Anastasia Hadjitheodoridou, the Amathus Guest Relations Manager. With 11 years of guest relations experience she was the go-to person for anything and everything related to your stay at the Amathus, and in Limassol in general. Needless to say, Anastasia simply could not be there all day every day, so the management decided to support her by appointing two sisters in service: Guest Relations Officers Veronica Onisiforou and Odysseia Odysseos. Each member of this polished trio has her own personality and personal style, each a perfect hostess in her own right. As a team, they have a blanket responsibility to make sure every guest receives attention and enjoys every moment at the hotel. This is the message that the three ladies convey in several languages. Whether you were welcomed after check-in by Anastasia, Veronica or Odysseia, your ‘lady of the house’ will take you under her wing for the duration of your stay. You may have a special request for your room or your child might be extra fussy at mealtimes. Anastasia says: “I have always felt this urge to look after and care for people; I think I inherited it from my mother!” Little girls staying at the hotel look up to her like a big sister, others write letters to her or send her facebook friend requests. She says: “I feel this job was made for me…” Half Cypriot and half Ukrainian, Veronica migrated from Reception to the world of Guest Relations. “At the Reception desk you have a fixed position, so you can only do that much. As a Guest Relations Officer it is my duty to be around our guests, visible, accessible and ready to take action, from organizing a birthday celebration to arranging business appointments. What I try to do, is to relieve guests from routine tasks that will take time away from their holiday.” Limassol born Odysseia Odysseos has travelled around the world and has an impressive and colourful CV which includes university degrees in special education and ergotherapy, and a certificate from the Broadway Dance Academy in New York. Clearly, being tied to a desk does not fit into Odysseia’s world view. She says: “I like to be around people, and I like to move. Each person is different, and I find it both challenging and rewarding to put myself in other people’s shoes and try to understand their needs so I can give guests something they appreciate, even before they ask for it…” Indeed. That is the ultimate achievement, the dream of every perfect hostess, and the goal of all three at the Amathus Hotel.

This year, at the Amathus hotel, an exclusive experience awaits you at the newly-completed Kalypso Gardens. An experience designed to ensure the pampering of the day reaches its crescendo. R E I M A G I N E D S PA C E As of this year, the Kalypso Gardens offers you a new and reimagined space. While the beautiful sea view and some garden elements have always been the trademark of this dining room, the recent makeover gives it a new, more compelling visual character and an enhanced ambience. A present-day blend of glass and stainless steel is offset by the timeless aesthetic of blossoming bougainvillea plants that fan out like umbrellas, creating an environment akin to a groundfloor roof garden. Overhead, the elegant white canopies sculpt and redirect the strategically placed lighting, creating a dining landscape that is both pristine and intimate. It’s a landscape that was born to host the new restaurant’s plethora of menus and entertainment. The dining area itself has been expanded to accommodate around 200 guests who will enjoy the expanded range of live-cooking demonstrations. Altogether, the buffet stations are now more symmetrically arranged and have been transformed to meet the evolving tastes of today’s diners. For the evening’s entertainment, a centrally placed raised platform allows musicians their own space while they perform. A MOVEABLE FEAST
In other words, the scene is set to transport you to a world of glamour, with no effort having been spared to delight and satisfy the senses. “There are seven different themes, one for every week night, each with its own buffet menu,” explains Chef Savvas. “Every Monday the theme is Mediterranean, Tuesday is dedicated to Cypriot cuisine, Wednesday offers Asian dishes, Thursday is Chef’s Night, Friday is Barbecue Night, Saturday offers International or Around the World cooking and, finally, every Sunday the theme is Italian cuisine.” Each theme night has its own character, with completely different dishes and live-cooking stations around the periphery promising to add a flourish to each evening’s experience.

“For example, for the Mediterranean theme, on Mondays night, fresh pasta and spit-roasted meat will be prepared before your eyes,” says the Executive Chef. “During Cyprus Nights on Tuesdays, the traditional ‘xylofourno’ oven will be in operation for traditional ‘kleftiko’ or oven-cooked lamb, while grilled meats and appetizers such as souvlakia (kebabs), ‘loukanika’ sausages and halloumi sizzle over charcoal.” Other live-cooking demonstrations will include dexterous noodle-making in woks, expertly crafted sushi and teppanyaki iron griddle cooking for Asian Night on Wednesdays, and antipasto preparation, oven-baked pizza and carving of delicious charcuterie on Italian Night each Sunday. “Accompanying the food will be the hotel’s very extensive wine list, featuring over 200 selections, which we believe will cater to and pair well with each guest’s dishes of choice,” adds Food and Beverage Manager George Georgiou. The wine list includes premium varieties from all the important wine-producing countries worldwide, while also showcasing and promoting local wineries. DIVERSE PERFORMANCES
Matching entertainment to the night’s culinary theme completes the Kalypso Gardens experience. “On theme nights, there always is live music,” explains George, with different bands performing every evening, each with their unique repertoire. “And every musical performance will complement the evening’s chosen theme,” he adds. For example, on Italian Night every Sunday, the famous vocalist Lucio Savva, violinist Natalia and guitarist Gregory Kerian will dedicate most of the evening’s programme to Italian music, with a few international hits to mix it up. The most elaborate theme night related performances will be on Cyprus Night on Tuesdays and Barbecue Night on Fridays. “On Cyprus Nights there is music from the Greek and Cypriot repertoire, together with traditional dancing – including the well-loved display of dancing with glasses balanced on the forehead,” says the Food and Beverage Manager. “On Barbecue Night, the entertainment includes a duo of musicians, but also a group performing feats such as sand painting, acrobatics, special dances, and so on.” With such prospects of unlimited dining, music and summer celebrations ahead of you, the charm of Mediterranean nights at the Kalypso Gardens awaits.

Having worked as a musician in the UK, he has recorded an album and was previously a band member of Cat Stevens. Gregory and the Quintet are jazz lovers – and they want you to enjoy this unparalleled form of musical expression as much as they do. Their shows are a devised musical tapestry of standard favourites and rearranged, ‘jazzed up’ popular classics by the Beatles, the Bee Gees and other bands. “People are familiar with the melodies and enjoy singing along; they often get up to dance too,” says Gregory. He is joined by singer Nicole, saxophonist Iacovos, renowned Rotterdam Conservatory trained base guitarist Nicholas, and drummer Andreas. Together they perform popular solos and instrumentals from a vast repertoire that allows them to adapt to the mood and energy of the audience every night. “People love to make requests,” says Gregory, and he is always happy to oblige, making every evening with the Amathus Quintet different, but always enjoyable. Note to jazz friends: Be sure to catch their arrangements of jazz favourites such as ‘Fly Me to the Moon’ and ‘Autumn Leaves’.

The crooning sounds of Italy under the starlit skies include the Godfather theme music, Volare and songs of Eros Ramazzotti. As the evening progresses, you can look forward to some skilful serenading when Natalie picks up a violin and is followed by the others on their guitars, all strolling around the guests, filling the air and flattering your ears with harmonies, duets and solos. In sound and spirit, this is an evening that will delight anyone with the slightest affinity to the soul of Italy. Luccio’s bond with Italian music runs in the family: his uncle, Stratos Demetrio, led the rock band ‘I Ribelli’ to stardom in Italy during the 60’s. Luccio himself is no stranger to success. After starting his career as a professional football player in Cyprus and Sweden, he effortlessly transitioned to his other passion: music. He then went on to win a composer’s award at the Pancyprian Laiki Bank Music Festival in 1997 and received the honour and title of Goodwill Ambassador for Italian Music, awarded by the Italian Embassy in Cyprus.
GINO & SANDRA For an evening of Latin passion, the Brazilian Lebanese Gino and Sandra from Cuba set the stage alight with Latin fever. Music runs through their veins, so be prepared to sing and swing the night away, as Gino strums his guitar creating romantic vibes, accompanied by Sandra’s intoxicating smiles, twirls and swirls. The duo were clearly born to perform: “We are very passionate about music, and people feel it,” says Sandra. With a rich musical repertoire and maracas always at hand, they perform cherished classics, beginning with smooth Latin jazz and building up the mood with salsa, bachata, cha-cha, bossa nova and the enchanting bolero. “Sandra plays percussion and dances beautifully; and she has a lovely way of getting people to join in,” says Gino. Occasionally, Sandra introduces traditional Cuban songs that echo her early career, which began in Cuba when she was only 17. “Guests might not always recognize the pieces, but they love the rhythm and energy,” says Gino – and that’s what the show is all about. Since Gino speaks six languages and Sandra three, the multilingual duo perfectly match the international nature of Amathus guests and perform in several languages. Listen out for their mesmerizing Latin adaptations of Wham’s ‘Careless Whisper’ in bachata and Adele’s ‘Hello’ in salsa time.
GREEK & CYPRIOT NIGHTS Whether you’re clicking your fingers high to Zorba the Greek, watching ‘ton potira’ balance 20 glasses on his head, or slapping your heels to the distinctive sounds of the bouzouki, this truly is an unforgettable night. Alternating between Greek and Cypriot themes, this weekly show adds a generous serving of tradition to a meal of local dishes and drinks, making it one of the most popular theme nights on the calendar. Pianist Christos, vocalist Anna, violinist Spiros, bouzouki player Marios and four professional dancers take great pleasure in sharing their favourite Greek and Cypriot songs and dances. “We open and close the show with Zorba the Greek – our guests simply love it,” says Christos. With beaming smiles all round, the team showcase folk dances including the famous ‘drepani’ (sickle) – performed in the past by men to parade their harvesting skills – and the ‘datsia’, where dancers spin glasses around in a sieve to display their agility. Don’t hesitate to accept the performers’ invitation to join in the dancing; it’s a great way to pick up a step or two of the traditional Greek ‘kalamatianos’ or Cypriot ‘zeimbekiko’ dances. Watch out for the rip-roaring ‘Ton Nicolis’ Cypriot dance, where the performer has a burning piece of paper attached to his lower back and puts out the flame in a series of bold dance moves.

The tourism industry in Cyprus is on a high. As the number of arrivals continues to climb, Limassol welcomes its fair share of visitors who enjoy the city’s unique buzz and cosmopolitan identity. At the same time, the Limassol Tourism Board is well aware of the latest industry trends. Whether you call it ‘Experiential Tourism’, ‘Tourism Experience’ or ‘Enrichment Travel’, the essence is the same: travellers want a holiday that will create lasting memories, ideally with an element of innovation. They are becoming increasingly concerned about their ecological footprint and appreciate the efforts of sustainable destinations. The key to such a holiday scenario can be summed up in one word: mobility. To that end, Limassol is investing in sustainable mobility, which will enhance your holiday experience while minimizing the environmental impact of your means of transportation. Indeed, Limassol is committed to improving public transportation and is simultaneously supporting the shift towards electromobility. A CITY WITH A MISSION
When electric cars made their debut in Cyprus a few years ago, Limassol was the nerve centre of this innovative trend. Since then, the city has taken tangible measures to develop and upgrade its cycling infrastructure, support the city’s bike-sharing network, and significantly improve the shuttle bus service to the airport. Obviously, these are only the first baby steps towards sustainable mobility; but they are part of an ambitious long-term plan to make Limassol a greener, more sustainable destination. However, implementing radical change is a gradual process. Maria Stylianou Michaelidou, Manager of the Limassol Tourism Board, explains: “Raising awareness is always the first step. We have compiled, published and distributed information that explains the advancements in technology and the benefits of investing in electric vehicles – for our city, our economy and our society as a whole.” The city is clearly on a mission with three objectives. The first is to encourage residents and visitors to leave private cars at home, and either walk, cycle or use public transport. Apart from reducing the negative impact on the environment, this is often conducive to enjoyable personal interaction while touring and sightseeing. Second, if a car is a must, Limassol wants to make it easier, more affordable and more feasible to opt for an electric vehicle. Finally, and as a result of the first two objectives, better air quality and more advanced green transportation will ultimately upgrade Limassol as a tourist destination. The fact is, electric cars have come a long way – more than many people realize. The previously prohibitive cost of an electric vehicle is now a thing of the past, as prices gradually become more broadly acceptable, especially when assessed in combination with the fuel cost savings. Two other concerns – speed and range – are also improving rapidly. Maria says: “Electric hire cars currently available in Limassol reach the same speed

as conventional cars and can travel 150-330km, depending on the model, on a single charge, which takes approximately 30 minutes. The cost to travel 220km is around €4.50! For an island the size of Cyprus, this performance is more than adequate. And as the network of charging stations grows, we hope more and more people will adopt electromobility.” JOINING FORCES

Obviously, Limassol is not a lone operator. The city is developing its own local programmes as well as European initiatives, especially within the framework of CIVITAS (short for ‘City Vitality and Sustainability’), a network of cities dedicated to cleaner, better transport in Europe and beyond. In 2016, together with five other cities – Rethymno, Valetta, Elba, Las Palmas and Madeira – Limassol participated in the 2020 CIVITAS Destinations Project. Launched by the European Commission and co-financed by CIVITAS, the project invited proposals for a 4-year plan, starting in 2016, for the implementation of intelligent sustainable and cost-effective transport solutions that would improve urban accessibility and reduce emissions and energy consumption. Limassol and its partner cities were one of 37 consortia participating in the project, and their joint proposal was one of only three proposals that were approved. To fund its share of the project, Limassol was granted the respectable amount of €3million. This is only the beginning; follow-up projects that will allow Limassol to provide different modes of sustainable mobility are already in the pipeline.

DRIVING CHANGE
Over the next couple of years, expect to see subtle yet powerful change happening across the city. For starters, new EV charging stations will be installed, and all will be sheltered and clearly marked. In parallel, municipalities will be motivated to offer free parking for electric vehicles in municipal parking lots. These measures, along with the zero road tax for electric vehicles, are designed to stimulate interest in electromobility. Two hybrid hop-on hop-off busses will be introduced, offering visitors this popular sightseeing option. Limassol’s bike-sharing company will introduce electric bikes, while car hire companies as well as local businesses will be encouraged to add electric vehicles and electric bikes to their fleets.
Maria says: “It’s a four-lane process. We hope to complete infrastructure by 2018, and to be fully operational by 2020. We will also be producing information material, mostly electronic, including a free downloadable interactive mobile app that will provide real-time information regarding the nearest electric rental vehicles and bikes, EV charging stations, nearest bus stops and available parking spots. The app will even calculate the emissions and carbon footprint per mode of transportation – among many other things. Finally, we will be launching a ‘Green Award’ for hotels, to acknowledge their environment-friendly policies and measures.” MARKET SUPPORT
With so many resources being invested in electromobility in Limassol, one cannot but wonder if these efforts are valued by the visitors the city welcomes and hopes to engage. Maria provides some insight: “We don’t have actual statistics or a calculated percentage of ‘green’ tourists in Cyprus, but we do know that this is the international trend. According to a recent survey of German holidaymakers, one third listed sustainability among the criteria they evaluate when choosing a holiday destination. This is a market of 55 million travelers!” Sustainable mobility in itself might not be a reason to come to Limassol; but the vibes across the city echo an overall appreciation of green solutions that clearly deliver a positive, more pleasant and inspiring experience.

Starting life as the privately-owned Pallas Cinema in 1949, the Pattihio Municipal Theatre has always played a significant role in boosting Limassol’s culture and entertainment scenes. When the building was donated by Mr. Pattihis to the Limassol Municipality in 1986, the planning committee at the time decided to transform the old cinema into a 740-seat theatre, giving it a new lease of life and broadening its cultural significance in a city where the arts were on the rise. “The building housed the municipal theatre for almost 25 years; so it was definitely time for a facelift,” said Argyridis. “Bringing the theatre into the 21st century was no mean feat; but today, after two years of intensive work, it has the technical specifications of a modern-day theatre.” In addition to the major task of renovating the roof, ceilings, floors and walls, the stage was also extended to accommodate bigger performances. Argyridis is channelling this newfound potential into a fresh vision for the Pattihio. His two-fold goal is to offer a diverse programme that will appeal to all, and provide a much-needed stage for young musicians and artists trying to break into the industry. “Almost the entire cultural society of Limassol has passed through my office in these first months,” Argyridis commented. “We are happy to support the new generation of musicians and artists of Limassol and Cyprus as a whole, to give them the exposure they need.” With the personal experience of a young musician struggling to get a foot in the door after returning from his studies in Russia, Argyridis is sensitive to the plight of the emerging artist. However, these collaborations are a win-win for both parties, as events with new bands and musicians also help to raise the profile of the

theatre, expanding the scope of its calendar of events beyond commercial concerts, towards a more alternative and diversified arts scene – one that is currently thriving in the vibrant city of Limassol. “My vision is to create a friendly and open theatre that can act as a high standard national theatre with a strong policy of supporting the new artists of Cyprus,” says Argyridis. Hosting bright fledgling talent has the additional benefit of drawing in a younger crowd to the theatre – a key ingredient in Argyridis’s recipe for the development of the increasingly rich cultural scene in Limassol. “The younger generations are returning from their studies abroad and asking for the cultural innovation they have experienced outside Cyprus,” said Argyridis. “They are looking to us to provide interesting performances and a forward-thinking cultural agenda. As an active, vibrant theatre that engages in a continuous dialogue with artists, producers and the audience, we can serve as a mini local ministry of culture. We are not just a theatre. We are an organization for the cultural development of Limassol and the island.” PLETHORA OF OPTIONS
The Pattihio is also opening itself up to a more multinational audience, as it regularly welcomes performances from Russia, Greece, the UK and further afield. Argyridis says: “Last month we had Greek theatre, an opera evening, we had a local ethnic jazz band from Limassol, a local musical, stand-up comedy theatre from Russia, and children’s performances in English and Russian.” In May, for example, the programme included a glamorous Russian Gala Night with opera music; three performances of the hilarious Shakespeare parody Hamlet B, by Samuel Bobrick; a musical remake of Disney’s Mulan for families and children; a concert by a group of emerging jazz talents from around the world playing original compositions by renowned Cypriot guitarist Ermis Michail. For lovers of the spoken word, the artistic director of the State Theatre Satiyricon, Konstantin Arkdevich Raykin, gave a solo performance entitled ‘Beyond the Sky’. And there’s more to come, as Argyridis is determined to tempt the public with more “interesting, innovative and unusual” productions and shows from around the world. The theatre’s programme of events is advertised on social media and on the official Pattihio Theatre website, as well as across local media including radio, TV and newspapers. With so much to look forward to, saving a few nights for a sample of culture in Limassol is highly recommended for an experience that will inspire the mind and flatter the soul.

mits. And, due to the magnificent island weather, this is a sport that’s possible all year round. Although Cyprus boasts over 400 official climbing routes, it’s the Dhiarizos Climbing Area, located about 50km to the east of Limassol town, which is probably the most popular. Considered some of the best sport climbing on the island, these crags are comprised of two different types of hard limestone, and are divided into two different sections to offer a wide variety of routes and climbing grades. Named ‘Kourtelorotsos North’ and ‘Kourtelorotsos South’, the former section boasts a maximum altitude of close on 40 metres and is perfect for experienced climbers, while the latter clocks in at a more novice-worthy 12 metres. Both crags offer more than 20 routes, and require a 50m rope as well as the usual paraphernalia: helmet, climbing shoes and so forth. ADRENALINE RUSH

Aiming high? Then rock climbing is the sport for you. It may not be new, but it’s certainly extreme, especially if you’re the type of all-in enthusiast who enjoys hanging by one hand off a clifftop. There are several places to try rock climbing in Cyprus, including a number of indoor centres with purpose-built faces, but nothing beats the great outdoors, that feeling of the sun on your back and the wind in your hair as you conquer the soaring sum-
There’s a thriving climbing community in Limassol, led by the Limassol Climbing Club (LCC) who boast their own indoor boulder wall and are happy to help any amateur rock climbers improve their technique. “We get a lot of visitors from abroad who want to have a go alongside experienced climbers,” explains LCC owner, Harry Yementzi. “It’s a great way for beginners to try the sport; the wall is three metres high and there are mats everywhere, so it’s very safe.” LCC trainer Mike Ioannou is the man to get in touch with if you’re looking for the real outdoor action. A veteran climber and a UIAA qualified instructor, he’s been instrumental in bolting a number of routes across the island, including a new site in Episkopi, just outside Limassol, perfect for those with a little more experience in the sport. But he regularly takes groups to Dhiarizos, where he teaches potential climbers the “balance between safety and adrenaline.” One Step Further, a dedicated outdoor pursuits store in Nicosia, may be a little more distant, but instructor Marios Hajipetris is also willing to come to you, and can offer either a half-day or full-day’s instruction at the Dhiarizos site. “We organize courses for all levels, including kids,” says Marios, “and can provide you with all the equipment and training required.” For more information visit http://www.lccyprus.com or http://www.onestepfurther.com.cy

Cyprus’ premier water sports provider is right on your doorstep. A five-minute walk along the beach will bring you to West Water Sports, a haven for anyone who takes their adrenaline with a side of sea spray. If you’re totally at ease on the ocean wave, this water sports venue will be a home from home – everything can be rented by the hour. But complete beginners are also well catered to, with lessons from qualified, expert professionals seven days a week. Windsurfing, jet ski-ing, wakeboarding, paddle boarding and kayaking (along with a host of white water rides) are all on offer, with the chance to get fast and furious on a Hobie catamaran. But for the ultimate in white water experiences, nothing compares to the flyboard. A relatively new sport, flyboarding is as close as one can get to – well – flying, without wings. A souped-up, sky-soaring rush, it’s certainly not for the faint of heart or leg; this is one pastime which can leave even those in the fittest of fettle wondering what happened. Similar to turning tricks on a consistently airborne snowboard, flyboarding is definitely a workout, but it’s such an incredible rush that you won’t realize quite how much exercise you’re getting. And as long as you have a decent balance, it’s a cinch. In fact, says George Dimitriou, owner of West Water Sports, it’s really more about the discipline than the muscle. U P, U P A N D AWAY
“A qualified instructor will take the time to explain the positions while you’re still on the ground,” George reveals. “Then, the minute you’re in the water you stand in the salute position and you’re up, two or three metres into the air!” If you’re a good listener, you could go even higher, he adds. “We often see people soaring up to five metres above the waves after only half an hour on the board,” he enthuses, “and they absolutely love it! It’s easy, it’s simple, and it’s great fun. And any age can flyboard: we’ve flown people from 8 to 88 years old.” While there are a couple of other places in Limassol which offer flyboarding, it’s very important, says George, to ensure you have a qualified and licensed instructor and are using professional equipment. “At West, our staff are licensed by both the designer and manufacturer of the flyboarding kit; we also use the best boots and lightest flyboards and ask our potential flyers to book the day before to ensure we can tailor the entire package to their specific weight, height and abilities. No fear of flying? Then there’s only one way to go: paragliding. Definitely one of the more extreme of sports, this is the stuff which dreams are made of: soaring through the heavens, hanging high above the world in the sunlit silence. The ultimate free flying sport, paragliding uses the powers of nature – sun and wind – to either traverse long distances or wheel on high for hours on end. There’s no engine involved; it’s just you, the wing and the wind wheeling across the burning blue, spiralling away from the world as we know it... Para Fly is the place to make the dream a reality. A specialist paragliding outfit with more than 20 years of experience, their qualified instructors can either guide you through a tailor-made training course or take you straight up into the sky on a tandem flight. In the main, the school flies from the hills above Curium Bay, a stunning location just a few miles east of Limassol proper. Known both for its excellent wind conditions (far below, you’ll spy any number of windsurfers and kitesurfers) and its spectacular views over miles and miles of Mediterranean land, sea and sky, the area is the island’s principal paragliding launch site, in use since the sport was introduced to Cyprus in the late sixties. “At Curium, the conditions for paragliding are very stable, so it’s a very safe environment in which to learn,” reveals Para Fly’s APPI qualified instructor, Dimitris Antoniou, who has been teaching the sport since 2012. “An experienced pilot can circle the bay for six hours or more; a dedicated novice could be up in the air within three weeks.” While most of his students take their time and complete the course over a period of six months, those who are looking for a quicker fix can avail themselves of Para Fly’s tandem option. With no previous knowledge, a tandem flyer can be soaring the blue in as little as an hour... “There’s no specialist knowledge you need; your instructor will explain how to get in and out of the harness, how to sit and where and how to run. It’s completely safe, and a truly amazing experience,” Dimitris adds. “Paragliding is, I believe, the purest freedom known to man, and the closest thing to being a bird you will ever encounter. For 2017, Pafos has launched a concept it called The Open Air Factory, which invites artists, citizens and
visitors to work together and co-create new projects in different networks from across the world. The motto which encapsulates The Open Air Factory is ‘Linking Continents - Bridging Cultures’, as 152 scheduled projects throughout the year invite visitors to embrace new cultural experiences. “The Open Air Factory concept has been a great success. It’s the first time that a European Capital of Culture programme is coupled with a philosophy of using open spaces and natural settings as the framework for our events,” says Dr Patsalides. “The response from international visitors has been very rewarding; most of the events are free of charge, and we are very proud that we have managed to set our events in significant archaeological locations and places of natural beauty. Pafos is attracting more and more visitors who come to take part in our events and have a wonderful time.” Also speaking about the innovative concept, Artistic Programme Director Georgia Doetzer says, “Our philosophy and programme refer to all aspects of openness. This has always been done through our long history and tradition; it’s an openness that brings people of different social groups and countries together.”

With 1,500 artists descending on Pafos and 350 events in its programme featuring music, dance, gastronomy, cinema, art and exhibitions, there is something for everyone to enjoy. Dr Christos Patsalides, Chairman of Pafos2017 European Capital of Culture, explains: “Pafos is a city with a very rich cultural heritage, and parallel to this heritage we want to present modern new cultural productions which come together to offer visitors an excellent profile of the city.” The European Capitals of Culture programme was first conceived in 1985 by Melina Mercouri, who at the time was the minister of culture for Greece. An actress and singer herself, Melina believed that not enough attention was being paid to culture when compared with politics and economics, and passionately pushed for the baton to be passed around European member states. The first city to be given the accolade in 1985 was Athens. Since then, the title has travelled to locations such as Amsterdam, Berlin, Paris and Luxembourg, to name just a few.

The eastern Mediterranean island of Cyprus tells a story of remarkable resilience. The country managed to turn around its economy from near bankruptcy to continued sustained growth in a few years. This is evident in Cyprus’ recent credit rating upgrade by international agency Standard & Poor’s to just a notch below investment grade, along with predicted steady growth over the next three years. The Mediterranean island’s real estate market has also seen an enormous boom over the last two years — especially from foreign buyers. Along with its strong economic outlook, Cyprus has the 16th most powerful passport in the world according to the 2017 Visa Restrictions Index, which is compiled annually by global residence and citizenship advisory firm, Henley & Partners. Cypriot citizenship provides visafree travel to 158 countries including all 28 EU member states, Canada, Hong Kong, and Singapore. Cyprus has registered a growing interest from wealthy foreign nationals seeking to acquire property on the island. Demand for real estate outside one’s home country is continues to grow as high net worth individuals seek opportunities to diversify into the acquisition of international real estate. The Cyprus Residence-by-Investment Program was launched in 2009 and the Citizenshipby-Investment Program was launched in 2013. Both are deemed to be among the best in the world and have helped channel EUR 4 billion into the local economy. The Cyprus Citizenship-by-Investment Program provides applicants with a favourable balance between the capital required and the benefits received. The minimum capital requirement is EUR 2 million, which can be spread across real estate, land development or infrastructure projects. Alternatively, successful applicants can participate in Cypriot businesses or companies, or alternative investment funds under certain conditions. The Cyprus Citizenship-by-Investment Program is also ranked as the second-best program in the world by the Henley & Partners Global Residence and Citizenship Programs 2016 report, which ranks the top citizenship-byinvestment programs available globally.

The Residence-by-Investment Program is designed specifically to propel the real estate market, as the program’s main requirement is the purchase of residential or commercial property (or both) for a minimum amount of EUR 300,000. Compared to others, the Cyprus program offers many advantages, such as lifetime validity, no requirement to reside on the island, the inclusion of the applicant’s spouse and dependents in the same application, and — most importantly — swift processing within eight weeks, with high approval rate if all conditions are met.
Cyprus’ strategic position at the crossroads of Europe, the Middle East and Africa has seen the island thrive as an international business centre. Along with an affordable business environment, excellent support services, and state-of-the-art telecommunications infrastructure, Cyprus has a corporate tax rate of 12.5% — one of the twentylowest corporate tax rates in the world. Beachfront property on the island is limited and is likely to continue growing in popularity. The focus of the Cyprus real estate market has always been on residential property and specifically, within the luxury segment, second homes. The property options in Cyprus that provide buyers with the highest value for money include seafront properties and integrated master planned communities, often with a golf course or community at their core, offering properties that cater to all types of owners, including locals, new residents, second home owners and vacationers.
The quality of life in Cyprus is also ranked as one of the best in the world, providing its citizens with a modern, free-market, service-based economy, within an effective and transparent regulatory and legal framework. The country is placed 25th out of 161 countries on the Henley & Partners – Kochenov Quality of Nationality Index (QNI), which ranks the quality of nationalities worldwide. Cyprus performs well in terms of human development, and peace and stability as well as visa-free travel. Cyprus is ranked 33rd on the United Nations Human Development Index (HDI) and is also the 18th healthiest country in the world according to Bloomberg’s 2017 Global Health Index.
