River Cruise through Europe in Summer
Blue skies and cheerful sunshine alone are enough to put many of us in a positive mood when summer rolls around –there’s no wonder it is one of the most popular times to take a vacation. If you’re considering a summertime sojourn, here are six reasons to consider river cruising with AmaWaterways next July or August.
SMALL TOWNS
Cruising European rivers means visiting many off-the-beaten-path towns and villages inaccessible by large ocean cruise ships, and therefore you won’t be faced with overcrowding while on shore. In Spitz, on the Danube River, for example, no other river cruise ships are allowed to dock when our 196-passenger AmaMagna is in this Austrian winemaking hamlet, reserving the town primarily for AmaWaterways guests. Along the Moselle River, all the ports we dock in are intimate storybook destinations in Germany, from Bernkastel to Trier to Cochem.
THE SUN DECK
Every AmaWaterways river cruise ship offers a spacious Sun Deck with plenty of seating, fresh air and panoramic views where our wonderful wait staff visit frequently to offer you drinks. The majority of our ships include heated open-air swimming pools, perfect for cooling down after an included morning hike or biking excursion, while most of our ships in France offer a soothing whirlpool that beckons as the sun sets. AmaMagna is the only ship in our fleet with both a pool and whirlpool, leaving the choice of water temperature up to you.
EXTENDED DAYLIGHT HOURS
With the sun shining into the evening hours and lending lovely temperatures for nighttime strolls, you can see more and explore more on our summer sailings. Sit out on your balcony and watch the world go by – or choose one of our itineraries that offers more than one overnight in port enabling you to explore the nightlife in a fascinating destination such as Vienna, Bratislava or Lyon.
REFRESHING AMENITIES
Although temperatures outside rise in summer, our wonderful crew members aboard our air-conditioned ships are always ready and waiting with something that will cool you down: a recyclable Tetra-Pak water container as you depart for your excursions; cold water, iced tea or lemonade and a chilled towel as you return; a refreshing cocktail or beer at our daily complimentary Sip & Sail cocktail hour; palate-cleansing sorbets; and a mouthwatering variety of creamy ice creams for dessert.
IDEAL TIMING FOR FAMILY TRAVEL
If you have school-aged children or grandchildren, summer is the best season to spend quality time together. Select ships in our European fleet offer a limited number of triple occupancy staterooms or connecting staterooms, which provide peace of mind for travelers who wish to keep an eye on their loved ones. Plus, with AmaWaterways’ variety of included excursions, guests ages 4 and up are accommodated with tours for gentle walkers, active hikes and bike rides, tasting tours and more!
Ships with Connecting Staterooms: AmaKristina, AmaLea, AmaLucia, AmaMagna, AmaMora, AmaSerena, AmaSiena, AmaStella, AmaViola
Ships with Triple Occupancy Staterooms: AmaBella, AmaKristina*, AmaLea*, AmaLucia*, AmaMagna*, AmaMora*, AmaSiena*, AmaStella*, AmaVerde, AmaViola*
*Ships with Quadruple Occupancy Suites
EASY PACKING
With fairly predictable balmy weather throughout most European destinations, sundresses, shorts and shortsleeved shirts make for stress-free packing and lighter bags. Plus, with AmaWaterways’ convenient, attractively priced laundry service, you can likely get away with just carry-on luggage to avoid any potential hassle at summer’s busiest international airports.
THE BEST-KEPT SECRETS OF RIVER CRUISING:
The Main and Moselle Rivers
Have you ever wanted to truly leave the world behind and explore a place that time seems to have forgotten in its ever-constant march? A destination straight out of a fairytale, with rolling green hills and half-timbered structures that look like elegantly dressed gingerbread houses. From the era of the Roman empire to the charming towns along the river that revolutionized trade and travel, AmaWaterways is thrilled to share with you two of the best-kept secrets of river cruising – and among our Co-Founder and President Rudi Schreiner’s favorite waterways – the alluring Main and Moselle rivers.
LET THE MOSELLE BECOME YOUR MUSE
You wake in the morning and gaze out the windows of your twin balcony to get a glimpse of the passing scenery. Through a serene blanket of mist, you see the rolling green hills carpeted in verdant vineyards, leaves sparkling in a blend of morning dew and delicate rays of sunshine.
This is just one of the many sights that awaits you along the mythical Moselle River. When the ancient Romans reached this river, they, too, saw this lush landscape and built monuments around the region that still survive to this day. From founding Trier, the oldest city in Germany, to planting the first vineyards of this world-renowned wine region, the echoes of their impact still reverberate through the Moselle River Valley. Take the time to fully immerse yourself in these splendors on longer itineraries we offer through this breathtaking region.
A MENU OF EXPERIENCES ALONG THE MAIN
The name “Main” was born from the Latin “Menus,” and this region has a vast variety — or “menu” — of excursions available for your perusal. Taste your way through Bavaria as you explore the town of Bamberg, savoring a traditional German sausage with a smoky sauce complemented by a local handcrafted beer. Bite into a warm German bretzel, fresh from the oven, during your Wertheim tasting tour. These delicacies along the Main River are only one aspect of the multi-course experiences this region provides.
If you are interested in exploring beyond the region’s fine flavors, you can still feast your eyes on brilliant architecture and picturesque scenery along this innovative river. Gaze upon the countless spires that pierce the clouds throughout Würzburg. Bask in the beauty of the tranquil medieval village of Rothenburg as you take in its half-timbered houses and ancient churches. Watch the charming cottages dotting the scenery pass by as you glide along this enchanting river.

CRUISED THE ROMANTIC DANUBE?
Now Try This:
Gems of Southeast Europe
Our Romantic Danube itinerary from the German town of Vilshofen to beautiful Budapest offers the opportunity to venture through history in the grand capitals and quaint villages along this portion of the Danube River. But are you curious about what lies beyond the boundaries of Budapest as the Danube flows further east? Our 7-night Gems of Southeast Europe invites you to explore this region for yourself.

In Belgrade, a city with a history that spans over seven centuries, you can immerse yourself in culture with an expansive walking tour that includes the Kalemegdan Fortress, a stunningly preserved artifact that presides over the city and offers awe-inspiring views of the river below. Perhaps you are more interested in the city’s signature flavors? In this case, venture to a local distillery to sample a variety of brandies, including a traditional plum brandy known as sljivovica. With active hiking and biking excursions also available in Belgrade, each of our included excursions will provide you with a unique perspective of this city.
THE ICONIC IRON GATES
As the Danube gracefully narrows and your ship navigates through a series of magnificent gorges, you will come across one of the most stunning natural features along this portion of the river—the Iron Gates. Etched into the rugged mountainside, the stoic visage of King Decebalus, the illustrious last monarch of Dacia, proudly stands as a timeless tribute to bygone eras.
This colossal stone monument, an enduring symbol of strength and resilience, captures the imagination of every guest fortunate enough to witness its grandeur, whether that be from the spacious Sun Deck or from your stateroom balcony. As you cruise through the Iron Gates on your full day of scenic sailing, you will come to understand what makes a river cruise through southeastern Europe so special.

Cruise Manager’s Guide to Burgundy
The Heart of the French Countryside
A graduate of the history program at the University of Lyon and a former private guide in both Burgundy and Provence, our wonderful French Cruise Manager Camille is delighted to share her insider tips on our new Flavors of Burgundy itinerary!
WHAT MAKES FLAVORS OF BURGUNDY UNIQUE FROM YOUR ESSENCE OF BURGUNDY & PROVENCE ITINERARY?
Camille: To begin with, Flavors of Burgundy cruises the Saône River between the Port of Dijon and Lyon, while Essence of Burgundy & Provence cruises between Dijon and Arles, dividing its time between two rivers (the Saône and the Rhône). Flavors of Burgundy is our only itinerary with dedicated excursions in Dijon during the river cruise. Among our French itineraries, this itinerary also offers the most overnights, so you can dine or visit local bars at your leisure, take an evening bike ride or walk into the sunset, which is as late as 9:30 pm at the height of summer!
I’VE ALREADY CRUISED THE RHÔNE RIVER –IS THE SAÔNE RIVER THAT MUCH DIFFERENT?
Camille: Yes! The Saône River is narrower, very curvy and lined with forests, wildlife, quaint villages and castles. Burgundy boasts the most gorgeous French countryside, with rolling green hills, church steeples and mustard fields. While there are stone houses and Roman ruins along the Rhône River, the Saône is lined with medieval half-timbered houses, much like those illustrated in fairytales. Many of the rooftops also feature colorful mosaics such as at the Hospices de Beaune, which you can see during your included excursion from Seurre.
I’M NOT REALLY A WINE DRINKER –IS THERE MORE THAN WINE IN BURGUNDY?
Camille: Absolutely! While Burgundy is a highly acclaimed red wine region and we offer plenty of local wines on board as well as tastings on shore, we have a wide variety of excursions on our Flavors of Burgundy itinerary. There are four active bike tours, lovely châteaux and abbeys you can visit with our guides, including Cluny Abbey, the center of Christianity during the Middle Ages. There are also mouthwatering culinary tours and walking tours through villages such as Tournus and Mâcon.
WHAT ARE YOUR FAVORITE AUTHENTIC LOCAL DELICACIES IN BURGUNDY?
Camille: Dijon, of course, is known for its mustard, with a recipe that dates from the 14th century. Boeuf Bourgignon is made with beef from Burgundy’s famous Charolais cattle. One of my favorite dishes is Escargot de Bourgogne cooked with parsley, garlic and lots of butter. Don’t forget to try some cheese: my favorite, Epoisses, is a stinky cheese favored by Napoleon.
ARE THERE ANY EXPERIENCES EXCLUSIVE TO FLAVORS OF BURGUNDY ?
Camille: We visit Clos de Vougeot, a unique wall-enclosed vineyard that has existed for more than 900 years. In Dijon, you may bike along the “Banks of the River Saône,” explore the medieval city center where the Dukes of Burgundy once lived or tour the fascinating Château d’Arcelot.
Did you know?
The Burgundy wine region has more than 100 different wine appellations and its terroirs were inscribed on UNESCO’s World Heritage List for their outstanding universal value.

Cod Fillet
with Saffron Sauce
While many of our onboard dishes require multiple steps and extended time to garnish and plate, our freshly caught fish is often the exception. Focusing on simple food with fresh flavors, our chefs have elevated budget-friendly cod fillets with a rich, mouthwatering saffron sauce that is king. “Wow” your dinner guests this summer with an exquisite dish that is done cooking in just minutes.
Ingredients
4 cod fillets
1 onion
1 sprig of fresh thyme
1.5 grams saffron threads*
100 ml (6 TBS + 2 tsp) cooking sherry
200 ml (3/4 cups + 1 ½ TBS) fish or seafood stock*
100 grams (approximately 14 TBS/1 stick + 6 TBS) cold dairy butter
Butter and olive oil for cooking
Fresh ground pepper and salt to taste
*If you cannot find these items at your regular market, try specialty markets such as Whole Foods or World Market or purchase online.
Preparation
Peel and finely chop the onion. Heat a knob of butter in a small saucepan and sauté the onion and saffron threads for a few minutes. When the onion begins to get glossy, add the sprig of thyme. Pour in the sherry and cook it shortly on medium-high heat. Also pour in the fish stock and let it reduce to about half. Heat butter and a splash of olive oil in a large skillet. Pat the cod fillets dry using paper towels and season them with pepper and salt. Cook the fillets a few minutes on each side, until both sides are golden brown, but the inside is still soft (temperature measured by food thermometer should be at least 145°F/63°C).
Finish the sauce by pressing it through a sieve and then start adding cold butter cubes to thicken the sauce. Add the next butter cube when the previous one has been dissolved. Tip: Use an immersion blender to stir for a fluffier sauce. Season with pepper and salt and serve over the fish immediately with tagliatelle, flat beans or vegetables of your choice. Enjoy!
Makes 4 servings.

Legends and Lore of LAHNECK CASTLE
Above the mouth of the Lahn River where it flows into the Rhine resides the legendary Lahneck Castle. This stronghold has played witness to centuries of captivating history, while its very walls have served as the setting for many a fascinating story. What makes this medieval fortress such an intriguing destination to explore?
THE FORTRESS’S HISTORY
Founded in the early 13th century, Lahneck Castle is one of the earliest German buildings to feature Gothic elements in its architecture. The Archbishop of Mainz, Siegfried III of Eppstein, ordered the construction of this elevated castle to collect tolls along the Rhine River. Over the centuries, Lahneck Castle changed hands multiple times and underwent various modifications.
Despite the enhancements, the medieval fortress was still heavily damaged during the 30 Years’ War. In 1850, the castle was purchased by Edward Moriarty and has remained privately owned ever since, undergoing renovations to restore the fortress to its previous medieval glory.
LEGEND OF LAHNECK CASTLE
The most famous story surrounding Lahneck Castle is the tragic tale of Idilia Dubb, a Scottish girl whose family was visiting the region on holiday in 1851. Looking for a vantage point to sketch the surrounding area, she ascended the stairwell to the castle’s keep, only for the rotting wood to break behind her once she reached the top of the tower. No one heard her cries for help, and her body was discovered in 1860 along with her diary, where her last words were recorded: All I know is that there is no hope for me. My death is certain. Father in heaven, have mercy on my soul.
AN EXCLUSIVE EXPERIENCE
Led by an experienced and knowledgeable local guide, explore the castle grounds where these legends come to life. See the stairwell that Idilia climbed before her final days. Gaze out of the castle’s windows at the view of the river and town below. Walk among historic weapons and antique furniture, appreciating heirlooms such as the doll house that the current owner played with as a child growing up in the castle.
On itineraries that tour Lahneck Castle after dark, take in all the fortress’s splendor illuminated solely by candlelight, similar to how past inhabitants explored these stone halls at night. This fascinating destination is a delight for those interested in both the tangible remnants of the past and the tales that have been woven around them – and you can only experience this castle while river cruising with AmaWaterways!

How AmaAir Takes Care of You
AmaAir, our dedicated Air Services team, provides travel advisors and guests with a onestop-shop for reserving your flights. We spoke with Shahe Jierian, our Vice President of Air Development & Services, to learn more about AmaAir and why reserving flights for your next river cruise with us is the best option.
THE AMAWATERWAYS DIFFERENCE
What sets AmaAir apart from independent flight reservations is the array of benefits it offers. Shahe sums it up by declaring, “We eliminate the need to deal with third parties, providing the best airfare and schedule options from a wide selection of airlines.” Because of the department’s relationships with the airlines, we can often source airfares below market rates. Reserving with AmaAir also often comes with the ability to choose preferred seats at no additional charge, saving you from facing those upcharges when it comes time to check in for your flight.
The impeccable service doesn’t end once your flight reservations are made. Handling plan changes is
where AmaAir truly excels. Shahe explains: “With 24/7 emergency services provided by AmaWaterways, guests can expect a swift 30-minute return call time on average. AmaAir goes a step further by guaranteeing flight changes based on river cruise itinerary changes, even ensuring transfers when the itinerary undergoes modifications.” Shahe also emphasized that when you reserve flights through AmaAir, any changes in arrivals or departures will also be communicated to your Cruise Manager, sparing you the hassle of having to communicate those changes through your travel advisor or independently at the last minute.
RESERVE YOUR FLIGHTS WITH EASE
Simplicity is key for AmaAir, so we’ve made reserving your next flight with us easy. Shahe walks us through the very straightforward process. “The first step involves reserving your cruise and then either contacting your travel advisor or reaching out to the AmaAir team directly. After connecting with us and placing your refundable deposit of $350, we will reserve a temporary schedule for you. We will then source and present various flight options, allowing you to choose the one that suits your travel preferences.” All communication is maintained seamlessly through email, and if you decide not to reserve your flight through AmaAir, we will return your deposit.
Additionally, the AmaAir team is happy to work with you if you prefer to select a particular flight, adjust arrival or departure cities, or fly a specific airline to use membership rewards with our Custom Air option.
Recent success stories highlight the satisfaction of AmaAir customers. “Guests have praised our AirPlus fixed rate offers,” Shahe states enthusiastically, “the inclusion of one bag with economy class on select flights [which can save hundreds of dollars], reduced back-and-forth communication—one guest even told us that their business class flight was nearly $2,000 less with AmaAir than booking directly with the carrier!”
Reserving flights with AmaAir in today’s travel world ensures that you will have one less aspect of international travel to handle as you plan your next river cruise journey. With a commitment to flexibility and unparalleled customer support, AmaAir is redefining the river cruise industry’s approach to air travel.

TWO TALES FROM EGYPT
ONE SHARED SENTIMENT:
“AmaWaterways’ Nile River Journeys are Not to be Missed”
Like priceless gems in northern Africa, Egypt and the life-giving Nile River gleam with the promise of alluring adventure, drawing travelers seeking impressively kept tombs, ancient temples and the echoes of thrilling past explorations to these sandy riverbanks. Loyal guests who have immersed themselves in the wonders of our 11-night Secrets of Egypt & the Nile itinerary return home rhapsodizing on the breathtaking sights and enriching excursions that brought meaning to their vacation. Here are a few highlights of Linda’s journey with a group of 23 friends in October and Angie’s New Year’s cruise with her husband and 12-year-old twin daughters. For these two travelers on the Nile River, their Secrets of Egypt & the Nile journey stood head and shoulders above their wildest expectations.
OUR STUNNING AMADAHLIA
A veteran of many luxury ocean cruises, Linda instantly fell head over heels for our 72-passenger AmaDahlia. “We loved the décor on board, and our stateroom was the best we have had on any ship –anywhere. We loved lying on our bed and looking out through our French balcony at the Nile as it went by.”
Angie and her family thoroughly enjoyed the nightly entertainment provided on the ship. “The evenings on board were filled with fun entertainment from belly dancing to Egyptian spin dancers. These and the galabeya party where we danced the night away are all fantastic memories now,” she recalled fondly.
Our Nile River cruises are now available on both AmaDahlia and our stunning newly designed AmaLilia which debuted earlier this year!
DELICIOUS CUISINE
Linda found the atmosphere on board magnificent, praising AmaDahlia’s Chef Youssef for preparing wonderful cuisine throughout the cruise, including an extra “special” dish each night, such as Beef Wellington. “If you didn’t order it, they’d bring you a little piece so you could try it anyway,” she recalled with a smile. “We were really impressed.”
Linda especially enjoyed the exclusive feeling of The Chef’s Al Fresco Restaurant, where she and her group were served a multi-course meal that included braziers with coals upon which their shishkabob sat, as well as endless platters of Egyptian sweets.
EXTRAORDINARY INDIVIDUALS
Our river cruise and land journeys are renowned for our attentive crew and dedicated Cruise Managers, and Egypt is no exception. As she was recounting her stories on board, Angie told us that the whole crew was amazing, and she specifically praised the ship’s onboard Egyptologist as well as the Cruise Manager. “Walaa brought ancient history to life in such a way that every night we felt we had read another history book.”
Linda noted that the local Egyptians were exceptionally warm and welcoming as well. “We received a great deal of thanks from the local people for supporting their tourism industry,” Linda stated. Though they cruised at different times of the year, Angie agreed with Linda’s sentiment, adding that the highlight of her family’s vacation was “the friendliness of the Egyptian people, their pride and joy to share their culture with us through history, music, dancing and the international language of the heart: the genuine smile.”
SAFE AND SECURE THE ENTIRE JOURNEY
According to Linda, any pre-departure safety concerns her group had quickly disappeared as everyone felt welcome and safe throughout their whole journey. The Egyptian authorities went above and beyond to make sure they all felt protected and comfortable, from enhanced security at the airport to bag and x-ray screenings at popular tourist sites to checkpoints for buses.
Angie also enjoyed the same peace of mind on her journey. “We felt nothing but safe and extremely well looked-after every single day,” she said.
AMAWATERWAYS’ EXCLUSIVE EXPERIENCES
One of the standout experiences for Linda during her Secrets of Egypt & the Nile cruise was the private tour of Abdeen Palace in Cairo. “That was just unbelievable,” she said. “The palace is only used for private functions, so you can’t just walk up and buy a ticket. AmaWaterways gained access and it was all ours. We were treated like royalty.”
For Angie and her family, it was the Nubian village visit that was most meaningful. “Hessa was a beautiful surprise during the cruise, as we learned about the Nubians’ gentle way of living. The locals were so
welcoming and genuinely happy to share their hibiscus tea, peanut snacks and colorful homes with us,” she recounted. “Dancing with the Nubian singers, dancers and drum players and riding the beautiful felucca boats back to the ship were highlights for me.”
In our guests’ own words, their river cruise and land journeys through Egypt were nothing short of extraordinary. “We tell all our friends that if they have to prioritize one trip, it should be this one,” Angie told us. “It was magical, exciting, fascinating and much more. Egypt will be forever in our hearts.”
“This river cruise was the best decision we ever made.”
-Linda

Beyond the Tourist Trail
Exploring Hidden Gems along the Lower Danube
If seeking out the most popular Instagram hotspots is not your travel style, we invite you to go “where the crowds aren’t” and join us on excursions that veer off the beaten path during our 7-night Gems of Southeast Europe itinerary. Here are just some of the hidden treasures you can experience as part of your upfront river cruise fare while gliding between Budapest, Hungary and Giurgiu, Romania.
SOLITUDE AND SPIRITUALITY
Gaze out at the breathtaking Bulgarian countryside on your way to the incredible UNESCO World Heritage Site of Ivanovo. Nestled in the serene canyon of the river Lom, Ivanovo is an unsuspecting haven of Bulgarian medieval art within a complex of churches, chapels and monasteries –all carved into the cliffside beginning in the 12th century. Colorful frescoes painted upon low cave ceilings give you a sense of the quiet stillness once sought by the monks who defined their spirituality within these walls. Spelunkers, art historians, spiritual travelers and Indiana Jones enthusiasts: this is the tour for you.
BUTTERED IN BULGARIA
Rolling slippery sheets of buttered phyllo dough together with your fingers. Sharing a smile with your Bulgarian hostess, kind eyes twinkling in her home kitchen in Vidin as you learn traditional techniques for making Banitsa, a rich flakey pastry and addictive local delicacy. This intimate, capacity-controlled “special interest tour” is one of our most talked-about excursions on our Gems of Southeast Europe itinerary. And truly, there’s no better way to immerse yourself in the local flavor than to mix the ingredients with your very own hands!
OSIJEK, OH MY!
From ancient treasures to slightly more modern architectural wonders, Croatia is brimming with delights. While your ship is docked in Vukovar, join us on our newfor-2025 excursion to Osijek. Situated on the Drava River, this city is known for its 18th-century fortress, art nouveau buildings and its Co-Cathedral of St. Peter and Paul with skyline-dominating spires reminiscent of a fairytale castle – plenty of photo-worthy spots to fill your album and then some!
CROATIA IN THE COPPER AGE
If the mere thought of such places as Pompeii sets your heart aflutter, reserve your Gems of Southeast Europe river cruise for the 2025 season as we are debuting an exciting new tour for your inner archaeologist. With a culture museum founded nearly a decade ago set upon one of the most important (yet least-known) Copper Age archaeological sites in Europe, Croatia’s Vučedol unearthed the world’s first-known bronze and the earliest saw. The museum’s main attraction is the Vučedol Dove, a ritual pot made of clay that has served as a symbol of nearby Vukovar since the Croatian War of Independence in the early 1990s.
