he Lion Park, an established tourist destination, well loved by locals and foreigners alike, became a popular experience for all over the last 50 years. Having moved to the Cradle of Humankind in July 2016, this new must-see world class facility, called Lion and Safari Park, offers guests a memorable experience. The new park offers a wealth of exciting activities such as animal interactions, guided game drives and self-drives. You are guaranteed to get super-close to some of Africa’s favourite animals whether you go on an informative guided tour or self-drive. Guests also have the opportunity to engage in the experience of hand feeding a selection of animals including giraffes, ostriches and various other antelope species that roam freely on the 600-hectare property and frequently visit the wetlands in front of ‘the Wetlands’ Bar and Restaurant. The Lion & Safari Park is home to a vast selection of indigenous species such as Lion (Brown and White), Cheetah, Hyena (Brown, Spotted and Striped), Leopard (including black leopard), Wild Dogs, Sable antelope, Kudu, Nyala to mention only a few. Guests can enjoy a variety of different guided tours. The trained guides turn every tour into an informative and educational trip as they share interesting facts. Tour options include; Lion & Wild Dog Tour, Mini Safari, Night tours (with predator feeding), Private Exclusive tours, Alex Tour, Cheetah and Lion Walks. The 3-hour Safari is the flagship tour which includes snacks and drinks on the bank of the Crocodile river. The famous animal trainer Alex Larenty promises to provide a fun-filled experience as he interacts with fully grown lions on the ‘Alex tour’.
The park is a paradise for children. The beautifully designed playground next to the restaurants will keep the young ones entertained and guided game drives and self-drives are free to all children under the age of 12 from 1 December 2017. This makes the perfect venue for kiddies birthday parties. A day visit to the park also provides the perfect opportunity for schoolchildren to learn about the animals and various research programmes that the Lion and Safari Park is involved in. The Bull ‘n Buck grill provides a premier dining experience with a top wine list and a delicious menu, venison of course being the Grill’s speciality dish complimenting that true African sensation. Alternatively, the Wetlands Restaurant is a great family choice to enjoy a quick meal whilst enjoying the view of antelope grazing meters away. Take a short walk from the restaurants to visit the meerkat, porcupine and mongoose enclosures. Apart from being a world class tourist destination, the Lion and Safari Park turns any conference, function or event into something unique. The park’s photographic centre will capture your memories with a great range of printing options such as photobooks, mugs, keyrings, puzzles and more. The ‘5 dome shopping experience’ offers a vast selection of unique hand-crafted curios, jewellery and clothing, which make great gifts for those back home. Entrance to the restaurants, curio shops and kiddie’s playground is free, and guests only pay for activities. The cost of a visit to the Lion and Safari Park is well priced for both local and international guests. The park is open 365 days a year, and is certainly an experience not to be missed.
FEDHASA THE VOICE AND LOBBYING BODY OF THE SA HOSPITALITY INDUSTRY
As one of the oldest industry associations around, FEDHASA was formed in 1949 by industry representatives who had similar interests and needed to ensure that the private sector was able to build and control their own destiny. It was therefore agreed that, through an industry association, all are invited to participate meaningfully towards a common goal.
Recognised by government and industry role-players, FEDHASA’s core mandate is that of industry watchdog and lobbying body for the SA hospitality industry. As the VOICE of the industry, FEDHASA acts as the industry’s: • VOICE of advocacy • VOICE of knowledge • VOICE that informs policy • VOICE that promotes quality and service excellence
FEDHASA has been actively involved in the lobbying of the following important pieces of industry legislation and matters affecting our industry over the past year: • Visa/immigration issues • Tourism BEE codes • National liquor policy • Recent changes to the hospitality minimum wages and conditions of employment • Statutory Council for the Restaurant and Catering trade • Seasonality
Some past wins as the VOICE of the industry include: • • • •
Sunday double-pay – now only 1½ Minimum wage negotiations three years ago – only CPI + 1.5% instead of CPI + 4% The City of Cape Town Liquor By-law (2012) – application for extended trading hours, champagne breakfasts are back, etc. CATHSSETA levies only 1% of your payroll instead of 2%
Through collaborations with government and industry partners, FEDHASA believes that we could ensure a better and more sustainable trading environment for our members and the industry at large.

he annual Sanlam Top Destination Awards, in its third year running, plans to expand this year with additional entries, more guests at the awards ceremony, extravagant décor and further prolific sponsorship opportunities with the theme of Authentically African #MyHeartBeatsAfrica. The awards have been designed by Discount Traveler for one purpose and that’s to uplift the hospitality industry in South Africa by acknowledging top accommodation establishments as key industry players. Managing Director of Discount Traveler, Jonathan Pepler states that the Sanlam Top Destination Awards far exceeds our expectations, especially due to the great response we’ve received each year. “We are building a brand that will continue to show recognition to one of our country’s most influential industries and one that has a positive impact. The hospitality and tourism industry in its entirety is a driving force in our economy and to simply play a small role in this, is significant to the bigger picture.” Pepler continues, “We strive to uplift that local family business that has put blood, sweat and

tears into their establishment, to show people the utmost dedication that goes into running a guest house or B&B and then on the other hand we want to show recognition to the four and five-star hotels that are doing everything right in terms of service offering and deserve an applause.” Entries are open to all accommodation establishments in South Africa and there are nine categories available to enter. Entries have been open from the 1st of February 2017 but voting will commence from the 1st of March 2017. Voting is open to the public and establishments are encouraged to get their guests to vote for them. Votes are tallied and the top establishments are then judged according to an internal set of criteria. Nominees are named and winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on Thursday, 14 September 2017 which will be held at the Cape Town City Hall. Title sponsor of the awards remains financial giant Sanlam, while Rialheim ceramics plans to create unique centre pieces for each table at the ceremony, with various other large brands joining as well.

About Us
elcome to the fifth edition of the Amazwe Tourism Directory magazine, a vibrant new development aiming to inject the local tourism industry with a fresh, clean cut and unique perspective. As South Africa’s quintessential travel directory it is our aim to branch out into creative and universal methods of exposure that will provide a larger, more diverse audience while offering the best, most informative resource for any and every traveller. South Africa’s spectacular scenery, engaging people and world-class infrastructure make it one of the most desired destinations in the world. In 2010 the sector was given a massive boost by the successful hosting of the World Cup, when the country received a record-breaking 8.1-million foreign visitors. South African tourism is a modern-day engine of growth and one of the countries largest and most important industries, with tourism providing one in every twelve jobs in South Africa. The South African tourism landscape is varied and….., with something to offer every traveller.
ECO-TOURISM
South Africa’s diverse climates range from tropical in the south-east to desert in the central region. The scenery runs the gamut from spectacular mountain ranges to vast grass plains, from coastline to meandering rivers to desert dunes. The country’s wildlife is far more varied than just the celebrated “Big Five”, and is supported by an extraordinary biological diversity. Three of South Africa’s eight Unesco World Heritage sites are natural sites, while one is a mixed cultural/natural site. South Africa is leading the way in one of the boldest cross-border initiatives currently unfolding in southern Africa, the development of transfrontier parks.
SOUTH CULTURAL TOURISM
South Africa is home to diverse cultures, ranging from the Zulus who resisted European conquest to the nomadic San of the Karoo desert. Each culture has evolved its own distinctive art forms, music and traditional rituals, while the descendants of colonial settlers have evolved variations of their European roots. South Africa’s history has been one of confrontation, but is now also known as one of reconciliation. World-class sites have been established to commemorate the country’s past and celebrate its new-found unity, while the number and quality of cultural villages, community and township tours has grown dramatically.
BUSINESS TOURISM
Africa is a popular destination for business travellers, who spend on average three times more than their leisure counterparts while crossing over significantly into leisure travel themselves, through tours before or after their business activities and through return trips in subsequent years. With its first-world infrastructure, balmy climate and breathtaking scenery – not to mention acres of golf courses – South Africa is an ideal location for international congresses and conventions.
PALEO-TOURISM
South Africa boasts numerous sites of great archaeological significance. The best known of these are the Sterkfontein, Swartkrans and Kromdraai sites that make up the Cradle of Humankind, one of the world’s richest concentrations of hominid fossils. Others include the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, host to the largest and most concentrated series of rock art paintings in Africa, and the Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape, site of an ancient and sophisticated African kingdom that long predated European colonisation. These are all Unesco World Heritage sites.
ADVENTURE TOURISM
Being at the southern tip of a large continent, South Africa offers 3 000 kilometres of coastline along with breathtaking mountains – often side by side. The country’s diverse terrain, together with a climate suited to outdoor activities, make it an ideal hunting ground for adrenaline seekers. South Africa offers world-class climbing, surfing, diving, hiking, horseback safaris, mountain biking, river rafting – and just about any other extreme activity you can name, all supported by dedicated operators.
SPORTS TOURISM
World-class venues and supporting infrastructure, top international events, and South Africans’ passion for sport combine to make the country a huge drawcard for sports fans. More than 10% of foreign tourists come to South Africa to watch or participate in sport events, with spectators accounting for 60% to 80% of these arrivals. Amazwe is the result of dedication and hard work from all involved. The Amazwe team is made up of highly skilled, passionate and driven individuals who value quality, efficiency and service delivery while providing outstanding results. We are exceptionally excited to share our debut issue with you and look forward to building a long and lasting relationship with our readers

thiopia, Tanzania, and Djibouti are the African countries among the 10 fastest growing economies globally in 2017. This is according to a data-shot by Infinite Potentials Consulting (IPC), a professional services consulting firm which further states that the 3 states are expected to experience the highest Gross Domestic Product (GDP) growth in 2017, with a growth of 7.7%, 7.1%, and 7.0% respectively against a projected global average GDP growth of 2.7%. The growth acceleration in Djibouti has been driven mainly by port-related activities and transport, such as transit trade with Ethiopia which has attracted large public and foreign investments. On the other hand, Ethiopia and Tanzania have been significantly supported by the recovery of agricultural production, their rising service sectors, and increased infrastructure investments. In a Hospitality Report for Ethiopia launched earlier this year by Jumia Travel, Africa’s leading online travel agency, Travel & Tourism directly contributed 4.1% of Ethiopia’s GDP in 2015 with ETB 51.3 billion (USD 2.26 billion). It is forecast to rise by 5% by 2026 to ETB 85 billion (USD 3.7 billion). This largely reflects the economic activity generated by industries such as hotels, travel agents, airlines and other passenger transportation services, restaurant, and leisure industries; the report states. “The Ethiopian hospitality industry has grown quickly over the last few years, and there remains a lot of untapped potential. Exploiting these opportunities with the help of new technologies, and accommodation service providers will support the country’s initiative to become one of Africa’s top five destinations in the coming four years. The challenges are abundant but the future is inspiring, and we look forward to bringing the intended growth and progress into reality,” said Paul Midy - CEO of Jumia Travel in the report. Towards achieving inclusive growth, Africa has made progress in creating jobs since 2000. Between 2000 and 2010, Africa added 37 million stable jobs (including wage and salary employees and business owners). Out of this, the tourism and hospitality industry employs 1 out of 20 Africans, who indirectly work in the sector. According to McKinsey & Company, if Africa accelerated job creation by implementing a strategy to accelerate the pace of job creation, the continent could add as many as 72 million new stable jobs between 2010 and 2020 across all sectors, raising the wage-earning share of the labor force to 36%. The Linyanti Bush Camp offers the perfect setting for an authentic and wild safari experience. As the only source of water in the dry months, the Linyanti marshes are one of the most sought after destinations in Northern Botswana, boasting a great diversity of game and a peaceful atmosphere. The area offers spectacular birding all year round and is best known for its large herds of elephants that move down to the Linyanti River at the start of the winter months and only move back inland once the main rains arrive. Bordering the western boundary of Chobe in the Chobe Enclave, the Linyanti Bush Camp is an intimate 12-bedded tented camp on the banks of the Linyanti marshes in a private reserve. The camp is limited to small exclusive groups who seek a personalized experience in a private concession away from the main tourist’s routes. Combine the Best of Game Viewing & a Taste of Culture in Khwai (Okavango Delta)

Besides the day-time drives which can feature Africa’s big attractions – lion, cheetah, leopard, wild dog, elephant, buffalo, hippo and giraffe – guests at Khwai Tented Camp are able to explore nature after sunset with a night drive. This activity, along with the guided walking safaris, is not usually permitted in the National Parks or Game Reserves, and allows guests to get an up close and personal experience with some of Africa’s nocturnal and / or more elusive animals. The camp also provides the opportunity to explore the great stands of leadwood and mopane woodlands as well as open grasslands and banks of the Khwai River on foot. The camp preserves the romance of yester-year, a simpler life in harmony with nature. There are no permanent structures; everything can be removed to leave the wilderness exactly as we found it, minimizing our impact on the environment. Guests can enjoy spacious and comfortable tented accommodation, beds and private en-suite bathrooms with flush toilets and bucket showers under the stars. As the Khwai is a community-run concession all proceeds from tourism go directly to help local people and local projects through the Khwai Community Trust.

SANI VALLEY NATURE LODGES
S
Southern & East africa
ani Valley Lodge is a private nature lodge only 2 hours from Durban. It sits within the dramatic Drakensberg mountain range, borders a UNESCO World Heritage Site and is the closest luxury lodge to the famous Sani Pass.
The reserve has a very limited number of secluded luxury lodges designed to accommodate couples, families and small groups, all with the choice of full/self catering. Within the valley sits one of the largest privately owned lakes in South Africa. The lodges are scattered on the edge of the lake which is surrounded by a variety of antelope, zebra, baboons and other wildlife. This is one of the very few animal reserves in the Drakensberg, further enhanced by the vast lake which attracts unparalleled birdlife. The fishing is well renowned with regional records being attributed to the size of the lake.

The low number of secluded lodges makes Sani Valley feel like your very own private holiday home and is the perfect place to relax and have fun. One can indulge in a massage, be taught how to fly fish, go otter spotting by canoe, lounge in the Jacuzzi, be taken game viewing on horse back, drive a 4X4 up the famous Sani Pass, hike to the Bushmen paintings and more.
Accomodation Offered 1. Rainbow Lodge
A unique blend of luxury, nature and activities! Rainbow Lodge is the largest chalet at Sani Valley. It has 3 luxurious en-suite bedrooms that can comfortably accommodate up to six people . Rainbow Lodge can also take 2 extra persons on sleeper couches - contact us. Ideal for families and groups (couples: if no smaller lodges are available, contact us to reprice).
2. Bushman Lodge
This is a large 2 bedroom en-suite lodge exquisitely decorated in African themes with original African artifacts & embroideries. Bushman Lodge can also accommodate 2 extra people on sleeper couches – contact us. Ideal for families and groups (couples: if no smaller lodges are available, contact us to reprice). This unit has magnificent elevated views of the lake and Drakensberg mountains, including the balancing rocks which are well known in the Sani Pass area for their distinct look.
3. Sunset Lodges
Sunset Lodges consist of 3 beautifully decorated semi-detached one bedroom units. Each ensuite unit has magnificent lake and Drakensberg mountain views from lounge, bedroom and private deck. There are two accommodation units downstairs and one unit upstairs. We do not allow babies or young children in these units due to the units being semi-detached. Ideal for couples and groups. The sunsets here are amazing in the Drakensberg, with game wandering around your deck from early morning to late at night and the sounds of frogs in chorus singing out from the lake at night, accompanied by crickets and owl on occasion.
4. Lakeside Lodges
Lakeside Lodges at Sani Valley offer exquisitely decorated, double story stand-alone accommodation units. You will have magnificent lake and Southern Drakensberg mountain views from the living area, bedroom and bathroom. Each Lakeside lodge ideally sleeps 2 people but does have a small nook behind the main bedroom with a double stack bed suitable for 2 children. Each unit boasts a private jacuzzi overlooking the lake which provides a real luxury feel and brings the outside in. Ideal for couples, small families and groups.
5. Early Mist Lodges
Early Mist Lodges at Sani Valley are some of its most recent nature lodges built on the lake side with beautiful views overlooking the balancing rocks of the Southern Drakensberg. Each lodge includes one main double bedroom and one second bedroom with two single beds, an open-plan kitchen, lounge area and a private veranda with jacuzzi overlooking over the lake. Ideal for couples, small families and groups.

iver Crossing is 3km from Windhoek on the airport road being only 5 minutes from the heart of Windhoek and is located on a pristine 6500 hectare game reserve. Rediscover the nuances of a bygone era of farm life and offer the discerning traveller all the modern amenities. The main lodge building comprises a dining room, a centrally situated bar, a lounge with fireplace, a conference room with seating for up to 65 delegates and a boardroom for intimate meetings of not more than 12 participants. Nestled outside between the lounge and dining area is the pool (great for swimming lengths – it really is quite long!) The elevated wooden deck offers a fairytale view of Windhoek. The Lodge and the rooms have been designed to emulate old German farm houses – think ‘stoep’ with ‘afdakkie’ and pots of geraniums

The 20 guest chalets consist of 14 twin chalets and 6 double chalets (all chalets have en suite bathrooms with showers, loos and basins). Two of the chalets have been designed with honeymooners in mind and have baths instead of showers …of course all rooms have the feather duvets wrapped in 100% cotton, the environmentally friendly guest amenities and the unparalleled service and hospitality to consider too. 6 chalets offer views of Windhoek and 14 face east offering superb sunrise views of the Moltkeblick Mountain. We also train aspirant Namibians to make a cutting edge contribution in lodge operations... in fact there’s very little that’s not possible at River Crossing.
Things to do
Besides our accommodation we also offer a host of activities including game drives, horse riding, guided or self guided walks and mountain biking. We have a selection of function venues and would love to host your 60th birthday bash, your 25th wedding anniversary or any other occasion you can think of. The game drives morning and afternoon are engaging... the views are superb, the flora varied and the game abundant. Nineteen different species roam the reserve, including roan, sable, giraffe and wildebeest... leopard and cheetah are also seen from time to time. The reserve can also be explored on foot... in the company of one of our guides or on your own. Footpaths will be laid out soon, but roads and game tracks make the going good. The reserve is very hilly, so a basic level of fitness is required. Mountain bikes will be introduced at a future date (the hills have been mentioned!) – many mountain bikers from Windhoek know the property well and have ridden here in the past. Horses are also a very eco friendly way of exploring the lie of the land... quiet and un-invasive, the horses allow guests to get a lot closer to the game than in a vehicle. Shop till you drop at the Windhoek markets and malls.
