Mzansi A nation

that inspires This is a story of a country that’s always changing and growing. A country that’s known for its lush winelands, breathtaking seas, and beautiful fauna and flora. A country that’s always on a journey to discovering new experiences South Africa has a plethora of unparalleled stories that allow a new way of thinking and perspective on a daily basis. This nation inspires its people to aspire to a greatness like that of Nelson Mandela, Caster Semenya, Trevor Noah and other heroes and heroines. This nation inspires us, its people, to believe in a faith of our choice. Because whatever our faith is, we are all South Africans. It inspires new conversations. Conversations that embrace who we are and what we are about. It inspires new friendships. Friendships that are defined by interests and hobbies, not race and religion. And of course, it also inspires a new kind of leadership - a leadership that’s led by women and children. This is a dynamic country that’s shaping itself and is forever changing. A country that’s constantly inspiring new ways. Go to www.southafrica.info for more.

About Us

W

elcome to the fifth edition of the Amazwe Tourism Directory magazine, a vibrant new development aiming to inject the local tourism industry with a fresh, clean cut and unique perspective. As South Africa’s quintessential travel directory it is our aim to branch out into creative and universal methods of exposure that will provide a larger, more diverse audience while offering the best, most informative resource for any and every traveller. South Africa’s spectacular scenery, engaging people and world-class infrastructure make it one of the most desired destinations in the world. In 2010 the sector was given a massive boost by the successful hosting of the World Cup, when the country received a record-breaking 8.1-million foreign visitors. South African tourism is a modern-day engine of growth and one of the countries largest and most important industries, with tourism providing one in every twelve jobs in South Africa. The South African tourism landscape is varied and….., with something to offer every traveller.

ECO-TOURISM

South Africa’s diverse climates range from tropical in the south-east to desert in the central region. The scenery runs the gamut from spectacular mountain ranges to vast grass plains, from coastline to meandering rivers to desert dunes. The country’s wildlife is far more varied than just the celebrated “Big Five”, and is supported by an extraordinary biological diversity. Three of South Africa’s eight Unesco World Heritage sites are natural sites, while one is a mixed cultural/natural site. South Africa is leading the way in one of the boldest cross-border initiatives currently unfolding in southern Africa, the development of transfrontier parks.

SOUTH CULTURAL TOURISM

South Africa is home to diverse cultures, ranging from the Zulus who resisted European conquest to the nomadic San of the Karoo desert. Each culture has evolved its own distinctive art forms, music and traditional rituals, while the descendants of colonial settlers have evolved variations of their European roots. South Africa’s history has been one of confrontation, but is now also known as one of reconciliation. World-class sites have been established to commemorate the country’s past and celebrate its new-found unity, while the number and quality of cultural villages, community and township tours has grown dramatically.

BUSINESS TOURISM

Africa is a popular destination for business travellers, who spend on average three times more than their leisure counterparts while crossing over significantly into leisure travel themselves, through tours before or after their business activities and through return trips in subsequent years. With its first-world infrastructure, balmy climate and breathtaking scenery – not to mention acres of golf courses – South Africa is an ideal location for international congresses and conventions.

PALEO-TOURISM

South Africa boasts numerous sites of great archaeological significance. The best known of these are the Sterkfontein, Swartkrans and Kromdraai sites that make up the Cradle of Humankind, one of the world’s richest concentrations of hominid fossils. Others include the uKhahlamba Drakensberg Park, host to the largest and most concentrated series of rock art paintings in Africa, and the Mapungubwe Cultural Landscape, site of an ancient and sophisticated African kingdom that long predated European colonisation. These are all Unesco World Heritage sites.

ADVENTURE TOURISM

Being at the southern tip of a large continent, South Africa offers 3 000 kilometres of coastline along with breathtaking mountains – often side by side. The country’s diverse terrain, together with a climate suited to outdoor activities, make it an ideal hunting ground for adrenaline seekers. South Africa offers world-class climbing, surfing, diving, hiking, horseback safaris, mountain biking, river rafting – and just about any other extreme activity you can name, all supported by dedicated operators.

SPORTS TOURISM

World-class venues and supporting infrastructure, top international events, and South Africans’ passion for sport combine to make the country a huge drawcard for sports fans. More than 10% of foreign tourists come to South Africa to watch or participate in sport events, with spectators accounting for 60% to 80% of these arrivals. Amazwe is the result of dedication and hard work from all involved. The Amazwe team is made up of highly skilled, passionate and driven individuals who value quality, efficiency and service delivery while providing outstanding results. We are exceptionally excited to share our debut issue with you and look forward to building a long and lasting relationship with our readers

he annual Sanlam Top Destination Awards, in its third year running, plans to expand this year with additional entries, more guests at the awards ceremony, extravagant décor and further prolific sponsorship opportunities with the theme of Authentically African #MyHeartBeatsAfrica. The awards have been designed by Discount Traveler for one purpose and that’s to uplift the hospitality industry in South Africa by acknowledging top accommodation establishments as key industry players. Managing Director of Discount Traveler, Jonathan Pepler states that the Sanlam Top Destination Awards far exceeds our expectations, especially due to the great response we’ve received each year. “We are building a brand that will continue to show recognition to one of our country’s most influential industries and one that has a positive impact. The hospitality and tourism industry in its entirety is a driving force in our economy and to simply play a small role in this, is significant to the bigger picture.” Pepler continues, “We strive to uplift that local family business that has put blood, sweat and

tears into their establishment, to show people the utmost dedication that goes into running a guest house or B&B and then on the other hand we want to show recognition to the four and five-star hotels that are doing everything right in terms of service offering and deserve an applause.” Entries are open to all accommodation establishments in South Africa and there are nine categories available to enter. Entries have been open from the 1st of February 2017 but voting will commence from the 1st of March 2017. Voting is open to the public and establishments are encouraged to get their guests to vote for them. Votes are tallied and the top establishments are then judged according to an internal set of criteria. Nominees are named and winners will be announced at the awards ceremony on Thursday, 14 September 2017 which will be held at the Cape Town City Hall. Title sponsor of the awards remains financial giant Sanlam, while Rialheim ceramics plans to create unique centre pieces for each table at the ceremony, with various other large brands joining as well.

The Evolution of Adventure Tourism in South Africa

lso known as “niche” or “alternative tourism”, Adventure tourism has definitely evolved over the last couple of years as tourists are actively seeking out more participatory tourism. Gone are the days when tourism was just about wining, dining and of course shopping. More recently tourism has become about doing more challenging activities, it has become about “being one with nature” as some will term it. This trend became more widely spread with the rise of conservation efforts and activities. Since then adventure tourism has taken a hike all over the globe and South Africa is no exception to this phenomenal trend. In South Africa, the tourism industry in itself has a very rich history of segregation, with tourism being known or socialized as an activity for white South Africans and when black South Africans were in an opportunity to travel it was mostly for protest, academic or professional work. It is therefore both exciting and exhilarating to see adventure tourism companies such as the Soweto Outdoor Adventures thrive in this environment. Actually they did more than just thrive, they built a company as iconic as the Orlando Towers that it is situated next to. Their offering ranges from quad biking to bungee jumping to camping and anything in between. The role that the company occupies in the South African tourist industry is an inspirational one as the roles of black South Africans in tourism were always limited to those of cleaning and kitchen staff, it was unheard of for a black person to be at the forefront of a tourism organization. Adventure holidays in South Africa include Big Five Safaris in Mpumalanga, the region also boasts numerous activities such as abseiling the world’s

www.amazwe.com

by Thando Makili largest green canyon, quad biking in the forests and canoeing in the rivers. KwaZulu-Natal, on the other hand not only asserts itself as one of the country’s most culturally diverse provinces but is also very proud to host visitors for adventures such as canopy tours in Karkloof, learning to surf in Durban and an array of activities in the Ukhahlamba-Drakensberg Park World Heritage Site. For those travelers with an appetite for extreme sports, the Northern Cape is definitely the place to be, trail dangerously about in a 4X4 in the Richtersveld, for extreme activities one can visit the Augrabies Falls and Shipwreck diving along the isolated coast. Cape Town is no exception to South Africa’s rich adventure tourism landscape, the region is home to many thrilling and adrenalin inducing activities. For an adventure filled day paraglide off Signal Hill, go mountain climbing in Cedarberg or hiking up Table Mountain. It is evident that the future of Adventure tourism in South Africa is looking very bright and very lucrative. It might be worthwhile for the country to invest in the further development of the country’s tourism sector. South Africa is one of the most beautiful countries in the world and boasts some of the most amazing landscapes and scenery. To see all of this is exciting but to experience the views, the mountains, the seas, the forests and the animals from that perspective and angle is beyond breathtaking. Wherever you may be in our beautiful land, know that this country is an adventure waiting to happen so go out there and experience some of what the South of the Motherland has to offer.

Sibuya Game Reserve

S

ibuya, one of South Africa’s most unique Safari destinations, has more navigable river than any other game reserve in South Africa. Consequently as a birding destination it is hard to beat: there are nearly 400 different species. This breathtakingly beautiful game reserve is sanctuary to an abundance of diverse wildlife from elephants to otters, and almost everything in between, including the Big Five. Sibuya offers accommodation in two private and exclusive luxury tented game lodges and prides itself on superb cuisine. Sibuya’s reception is in the holiday village of Kenton-on-Sea in the Eastern Cape Province, about 140 kms (80 miles) equidistant from Port Elizabeth and East London. A natural extension to any trip, from Cape Town up the Garden Route, and easily accessible from Port Elizabeth which is a short flip from the major cities of Cape Town, Johannesburg and Durban. Charter flights to Port Alfred are less than a 20min transfer to the game park.

Accomodation Offered Forest Camp

Perfectly situated on the banks of the Kariega River, but tucked unobtrusively away into the vegetation. Adopting a low impact model, Forest Camp’s accommodation is built on expansive, slightly raised wooden decks and has long wooden walkways through pristine thicket, which allow elderly and disabled guests to move around with ease. Sibuya offers true luxury tented accommodation: each tent measures 40 square meters (450 square feet), is adjoined by a large en-suite bathroom, accommodates two adults sharing in top-of-the-range king or twin beds, and sits under an all-weather roof. Wide decks offer views of the river or forest. Cot or camp beds are available for children sharing with adults.

Contact Details TEL:+27(0)46 648 1040 EMAIL:reservations@sibuya.co.za ADDRESS: 39 Eastbourne Rd.

Kenton-on-Sea

River Camp

The smaller, more intimate River Camp has four tents, ideal for families with children, or for soleuse specialist groups. The luxury tents measure 75 square meters (800 square feet), are adjoined by an en-suite bathroom and accommodate two adults sharing in top-of-the-range king or twin beds, and sits under an all-weather roof. Decks offer views of the river or forest. Cot or camp beds are available for children sharing with adults.

Bush Lodge

Sibuya’s Bush Lodge is set in a pristine wilderness paradise only minutes from the main reserve. After departing from Kenton and enjoying our unique boat cruise up the Kariega Estuary, Bush Lodge guests enjoy lunch in the Reserve before a short transfer by game vehicle takes them to the Lodge.

Things to do Activities

The most popular activities on Sibuya are the game drives and walks, but many guests also take advantage of the opportunity to try their hand at fishing from the camp jetties. Canoes at the camps are regularly used by guests, keen paddlers and novices alike. Bespoke packages can be arranged for birding enthusiasts and nature lovers who would like to learn more about the environment, guiding and tracking skills.

Specialist Bird Guide

We know a birding holiday is not just about where you go, it’s who you go with - our birding safaris are led by Mike Pearson who has been involved with wildlife conservation and birding for over 30 years in various different fields - a lifetime’s experience birding in Southern Africa.

Bird Watching

For the avid birder, few destinations can offer anything close to the very special experience that Sibuya visitors enjoy. Coastal, riverine, forest, savannah and a huge host of migrant birds add to compile an impressive list that approaches 400 species, and covers such a variety of birds and habitats as to be like visiting three or four destinations at the same time. Take a boat or canoe up the estuary to search for some of the 6 varieties of local kingfisher. Or head downstream to the beach to see the multitude of waders, terns and gulls. www.amazwe.com

Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre

Southern & East africa

T

he Moholoholo Wildlife Rehabilitation Centre was established in 1991. A businessman from Pretoria in South Africa, Mr Strijdom, owns the farm on which the Centre is situated, and he in turn asked Brian Jones to establish and run the rehabilitation centre for him. Brian already had a Crowned Eagle in his possession and his reputation for the work he did with wild animals had spread rapidly. Brian Jones has been helping and caring for injured and orphaned animals from the age of four and thus he brought a great deal of knowledge and experience to the establishment of this rehabilitation centreVery soon a variety of animals were being brought to him that were either orphaned, injured or poisoned and in need of help. The plight of Africa’s animals and our natural system has always been the main concern at Moholoholo and the philosophy is that awareness must be spread if we are to save our wildlife

River Crossing Lodge

R

iver Crossing is 3km from Windhoek on the airport road being only 5 minutes from the heart of Windhoek and is located on a pristine 6500 hectare game reserve. Rediscover the nuances of a bygone era of farm life and offer the discerning traveller all the modern amenities. The main lodge building comprises a dining room, a centrally situated bar, a lounge with fireplace, a conference room with seating for up to 65 delegates and a boardroom for intimate meetings of not more than 12 participants. Nestled outside between the lounge and dining area is the pool (great for swimming lengths – it really is quite long!) The elevated wooden deck offers a fairytale view of Windhoek. The Lodge and the rooms have been designed to emulate old German farm houses – think ‘stoep’ with ‘afdakkie’ and pots of geraniums

The 20 guest chalets consist of 14 twin chalets and 6 double chalets (all chalets have en suite bathrooms with showers, loos and basins). Two of the chalets have been designed with honeymooners in mind and have baths instead of showers …of course all rooms have the feather duvets wrapped in 100% cotton, the environmentally friendly guest amenities and the unparalleled service and hospitality to consider too. 6 chalets offer views of Windhoek and 14 face east offering superb sunrise views of the Moltkeblick Mountain. We also train aspirant Namibians to make a cutting edge contribution in lodge operations... in fact there’s very little that’s not possible at River Crossing.

Things to do

Besides our accommodation we also offer a host of activities including game drives, horse riding, guided or self guided walks and mountain biking. We have a selection of function venues and would love to host your 60th birthday bash, your 25th wedding anniversary or any other occasion you can think of. The game drives morning and afternoon are engaging... the views are superb, the flora varied and the game abundant. Nineteen different species roam the reserve, including roan, sable, giraffe and wildebeest... leopard and cheetah are also seen from time to time. The reserve can also be explored on foot... in the company of one of our guides or on your own. Footpaths will be laid out soon, but roads and game tracks make the going good. The reserve is very hilly, so a basic level of fitness is required. Mountain bikes will be introduced at a future date (the hills have been mentioned!) – many mountain bikers from Windhoek know the property well and have ridden here in the past. Horses are also a very eco friendly way of exploring the lie of the land... quiet and un-invasive, the horses allow guests to get a lot closer to the game than in a vehicle. Shop till you drop at the Windhoek markets and malls.

TANZANIA PRIVATE SELECT

T

anzania Private Select Safaris was founded in the year 2003 by Aafeez Jivraj, who had then been working as a freelance & full time safari guide in various safari companies for more then 14 years. The time had come to change and give clients something very different from what the other safari outfitters were offering. It was time to bring clients closer to nature and to give them a True African Experience. The idea for Select Camping Safaris was born out of a desire to make it easier to follow the Great Migration. By conducting mobile camping safaris, with small yet very inviting camps, we are able to set up and break down quickly when moving from one place to the other, giving clients freedom of movement and the authentic experience of Living Outdoors without sacrificing True Comfort. Select Camping Safaris are a replica of the “OUT OF AFRICA” style, which take the clients back in time to the 1930’s and The Early Days of Safari. The camps are set up in secluded areas of the National Parks. There are no fences, and Elephants, Buffalo, Hyena, Baboons, Zebras, Jackals and sometimes even a Pride of Lions may pass though the camp. It is Africa at it’s best. Style clients will have their own Personal Chef, Personal Waiter & Personal Camp Assistant, Private W/C’s and Separate Showers.

Things to do

Gorilla tracking can be done the whole year through and is evenly as good. There is no higher or lower success rate in the different seasons (95% guaranteed to see them). In rainy season the tracks in the rain forest might be a bit muddier and your tracking might be a bit longer/ tougher because of that. However; it’s a RAIN forest, so difference is not all that big compared to dry season. In rainy season you are more likely to track in smaller groups. When you are flexible we advise you to book your tracking in November. One big reason is the discount of $250 us dollar per gorilla permit, but there are more reasons: November should be the short rainy season, but it has not been like this in the last 5 years. The last years it has been among the most beautiful months to travel in (after rain season and very green). It’s hard to predict nowadays when the rainy season will be. Climate changes are making it hard to plan. Normally the long rainy season should be in March, April and beginning of May and short rainy season in November. However, the last 5 years the short rainy season has been in early December.
