Week One

Reading: Zeara Polo, A. 2010. Between Ideas and Matters.

According to Zeara-Polo, the diagram does not play a representational role in the design process but provides an organisational and can have a performative quality depending on how it is deployed. Explain how Diagram is different from Signs and Symbols?

Diagrams are different from signs and symbols in the way that the way icons look has no affiliation with what it represents, however a diagram doesn’t play a representational role for the object they are depicting, as well as being a tool to represent and describe the relationship between objects/ things, without necessarily including metric/geometric information. It is also specific to a particular place or time.

Week One

Precedent Analysis Zaha Hadid, Burnham Pavilion, 2009 This pavilion was constructed and designed for a temporary installment in Millennial Park in Chicago. The name of the pavilion and its design is based on the name of the Plan of Chicago, titled ‘The Burnham Plan’, this the pavilion was built to celebrate the centennial of this. The design is based off Burnham’s approach to urban design coupled with new modern concepts, namely aligning the pavilion with one of Burnham’s diagonals in the city plan. Label your images here. Describe what they are (Section, Elevation, Plan, Image etc). Use white colour background in Rhino only. The following are 3 isometric progress views of the pavilion being modelled in Rhino.

Week Two

Reading: Hertzberger H. 2005. The in-between and The Habitable Space Between Things, from Lessons for Students in Architecture. Herzberger discuss how design should not be extreme in its functionality. Use your precedent study to explain how the pavilion allows for an appropriation of use.

The Zaha Hadid Burnham Pavilion allows for an appropriation of use through the original design intent, in that it was not designed or constructed to be a permanent structure, rather a temporary installment in Chicago Millennial Park. This pavilion creates a good sense of gathering for people through its 2 entrances, as well as creating conditions of privacy through the curved shape of the structure, hence being a mixed use (public and private) space and encouraging differentiated usage. Its 2 entrances also provide a transition into the different undercover space, thus creating ‘in-between’ threshold space.

Week Two

Isometric

Zaha Hadid, Burnham Pavillion I definitely found the modeling process difficult, as it took about 3 attempts to correctly model the shape of the pavilion. I chose the Isometric South East view as it displayed both entrances of the pavilion the best, therefore allowing the thresholds and circulation to be viewed easily. Whilst modelling, I learnt that the pavilion has 2 main thresholds: the entrances and the skylights/ structure, as both work together to define the inside and outside space. Circulation informs the design through its circular form, and the 2 entrances, allowing people to explore the pavilion by waking through one entrance and out the other.

Week Two Diagrams

Circulation

Thresholds

The solid orange arrows show the flow and movement of people around the pavilion whilst the dashed orange lines show the movement through the pavilion and its 2 entrances.

In this pavilion, the skylights, entrances and the shelter of the structure provide the thresholds. Whilst the structure itself shelters visitors and creates a different form of space inside the pavilion, the skylights let in natural light, creating a naturally lit inside space.

Appendix

Original Images

Modelling the Pavilion I modelled my pavilion in rhino initially by using the side views given, and traced each of the ‘circles’ using the poly line tool.

To create the skylight cut outs and align the segments correctly I used the plan view.

Appendix Process

Final Pavilion Form This is the main form of the pavilion in rendered form. I aligned each of the trace segments in top view with the pavilion plan to get the correct spacing, then used the line, arch and sweep 2 tools to create the arched surfaces between each of the segments. The sky light cut outs were also traced and then cut through the surface using the split tool.
