WEEK 6 READING: SURFACES THAT CAN BE BUILT FROM PAPER IN ARCHITECTURAL GEOMETRY Question 1: What are the three elementary types of developable surfaces? Provide a brief description. The three elementary types of developable surfaces are cylinders, cones and tangent surfaces of space curves. They all have the common properties of being a special ruled surface because a tangent plane is always tangent to the surface along an entire edge, not just a point. They also have ‘vanishing Gaussian curvature’ as their spherical Gaussian image is just a curve, thus a developable surface only contains parabolic surface points or flat points.
Question 2: Why is the understanding of developable surface critical in the understanding of architectural geometry? Choose one precedent from Research/Precedents tab on LMS as an example for your discussion. The understanding of developable surfaces critical in the understanding of architectural geometry as developable surfaces appear in various stages of the architectural design process. As shown in the Huyghe & Le Corbusier Puppet Theatre, interlocking diamond shaped panels are utilised on the outside of the structure to create a panelling surface on the sides of the theatre. This understanding is critical as it not only creates an interesting building and surface, but also creates a rigid structure.

WEEK 7 READING: DIGITAL FABRICATION
Question 1: What is digital fabrication and how does it change the understanding of two dimensional representation? Digital fabrication is a generative medium which has its own set of restraints, as well as the potential to narrow the gap between representation and building. It changes the understanding of two dimentional representation through leveraging digital design and manufacturing for spacial, perceptual and formal effect, as well as being used to streamline production, therefore producing a ‘seamless connection between design and making’. CAD replaced traditional drawing techniques, however the buildings looked pretty much the same, in that the only difference was that one form of 2D representation replaced another.
Question 2: Suggest two reasons why folding is used extensively in the formal expression of building design? Two reasons as to why folding is used extensively in the formal expression of building design is because folding is materially economical, visually appealing and effective as well as it being used as a digital tool to bridge a traditionally object-orientated practice. When folding is introduced to planar materials, they gain stiffness and rigidity therefore enabling them to span distances and become self-supporting.
