Haleakala is one of the most photographed volocanos in the world. The majority of the helicopter tours on the island add it to the ride of a lifetime.
HISTORY
04
MAUI THE VALLEY ISLAND
Maui’s most famous landmark has to be Haleakala. This massive dormant volcano offers the adventure of lofty, sometimes snow bound heights. In ancient times, Maui was a strong and stable island kingdom. It was the only one to complete a “king’s highway”, a paved walkway nine ft. (3 meters) wide that completely encircled the island. For a period in the late 1800’s, the Maui town of Lahaina was capital of the united kingdom. Currently, Maui, while bolstered by a strong economy, has emerged as one competitor to Waikiki with a striving tourist industry. In addition, the economic diversification needed to compensate for the declines in the production of sugar and pineapple, has sparked alternative industries, such as flori culture and information technology. For a relatively small island - if it were square, it would only be 27 miles (43 km) on each side.
DID YOU KNOW? Maui is known not only for their beaches but also for the sublime mountains and valleys that surround the island. There are plenty of nature parks with amazing views that are free for all.
DID YOU KNOW? Be careful while driving around from November to January. Traffic gets chaotic from tourists taking vacation time from work, which happens the most during this time of year.

Eastern Maui is Haleakala, an enormous 3-sided shield volcano capped with a Manhattan-sized caldera, a national park, and a space-age research facility. On it’s western slopes, Upcountry offers farming and cattle ranches worked by skilled Hawaiian cowboys, or paniolo. It’s windward slopes include one of the best windsurf spots in the world, ancient taro-growing fields, and the scenic Hana Road. There are also long stretches of beach where spectacular winter views include humpback whales offshore. West Maui is anchored by the older and second volcano. On the Lee, colorful Lahaina and the two resort areas of Ka’anapali and Kapalua draw many of the island’s visitors. The “downtown” communities of Kahului and Wailuku puncuate the West side. Adding to this diversity are two neighboring islands that comprise the County of Maui: Molokai and Lanai. Popularity brings people. Maui’s population has doubled in the past two decades, bringing serious concerns about water, traffic congestion, and the risk of compromising the fragile beauty. However, tourism is keeping the island afloat.
01
Whale Watching is one of the most popular tourist attractions on the island. Winter months are the prime season to see the most activity for the sea animal.

THE ROAD The Hana Highway is removed from the rest of the island that has a famous road that TO HANA tours take sightseers on every day. The winding road is a slow drive as the road gives to the ever-thickening jungle with one lane bridges. Many bridges offer easy turnouts for places to swim and take breathtaking photos.

About 13 miles outside of Hana the road enters the Haleakala National Park and crosses an archedstone bridge that overlooks these swimming holes. A parking lot with restrooms leads to a trail that takes you straight there where the 400 ft Waimoku Waterfall is as well to swim right under everyday.
This 1890’s locomotive, which is also known LAHAINA RAILROAD as the Sugar Cane Train, transports sightseers between Lahaina and Ka’anapali with an additional stop at Pu’ukoli’i. Narrators share the history of sugar in Hawaii along the way.
Keep in mind that some of the excursions are free while others, such as snorkeling can be expensive.

HANA THE KING’S HIGHWAY
Maui’s most popular visitor activity is the drive of our famous Hana Coast. It is along this beautiful scenic drive that all the spectacular waterfalls, freshwater pools, hiking trails, colorful exotic plants and endless tropical scenery can be discovered. All the sights, sounds and smells one imagines Hawaii to be can be found along this magnificent East Coast of the island. The drive begins in Huelo and ends at the Hana Beach Park. Until the early 1900’s, the drive had to end at Hana, due to no paved roads, hence the phrase, “Road to Hana.” Thr round-trip drive from Huelo to Hana is about 5 hours, though most people take longer when they find out all there is to see and do along the way. And one of the more surprising aspects of the drive for first-time visitors is that there are virtually no information or directional signs along the way.
DID YOU KNOW? The road is a slow, winding drive that is extremely narrow. Sometimes there are no guard rails, but stunning, high views of the ocean below. Take plenty of photos!
