The best of the North Shore remains the same On the calendar, summer arrives June 20, but that’s not when summer begins. For some, summer starts when school is over, although it may not seem that way this year. For others, it kicks off with Memorial Day weekend. Gardeners know summer has arrived when the soil becomes warm enough to accept cold-sensitive seeds and seedlings. By any measure, summer should be here about the time you receive this issue.

Do you have a question for one of our writers? Or an interesting photo, recipe, or story you’d like to share with Northern Wilds? Please send it to storyideas@northernwilds.com.

We know that summer will be different this year. Along the North Shore, many businesses are easing back into operation as the state eases work and travel restrictions associated with “flattening the curve” of the Covid-19 pandemic. Their challenge is restarting in a way that is safe for staff and customers as the North Shore experiences the annual summer surge in tourism traffic. Various communities and businesses are approaching reopening based on their own needs and comfort level. In Grand Marais, most retailers are taking a slow and cautious approach. Some will open in early June, while others plan to wait a few weeks. Most stores intend to limit the number of customers allowed inside. Customers may be required to wear face coverings, which will be readily available at many businesses. While some folks may not want to wear a mask, we suggest you just go with the flow. It’s a polite way to show respect for others. A big change this summer is the cancellation of all large events, including Grand Marais’ venerable Fisherman’s Picnic. Many organizations are figuring out ways to celebrate without gathering together. You can

learn more about their plans in our Events section. Outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, paddling and fishing are available. Most lodging facilities are open, but you are advised to call ahead for reservations rather than expecting to find a place to stay when you arrive. At this writing, camping is allowed in the BWCAW and at dispersed sites outside the wilderness, but public and private campgrounds are closed except to seasonal residents. Visitors to Grand Marais should know that the town is open for business. A two-year Highway 61 reconstruction project is ongoing. Expect detours, possible traffic delays and changes to downtown parking. You can find more information about the project in this issue, as well as a link to a website with current information. While this summer will be different, the best things about the North Shore won’t change. The sun still rises over Lake Superior. Deep in the forest, you can listen to the song of the white-throated sparrow. The rivers tumble over waterfalls. The night sky is a wonder of stars. If you’re lucky, you may even encounter a moose. Whether you experience the North Shore as a visitor or a resident, we’re all here for the same reason: we enjoy the beauty of this special place. Please be patient, calm and respectful of others. Sure, it’s different this year. But that doesn’t mean we can’t try to make it the best summer ever.—Shawn Perich and Amber Pratt

Dawn Sauvignon is the alter ego of Dawn Drouillard; she created the character about 15 or 16 years ago. | DAWN DROUILLARD

In the midst of the pandemic, a caterer performs NORTH SHORE—There is a question you’ve probably never asked yourself unless you stumbled upon it on social media. And if you have, then you want to know “What’s Dawn Sauvignon wearing?” The answer comes in a rapid-fire, performance video in which Dawn Sauvignon’s explanation of her wardrobe is also commentary on life in the era of Covid-19. Caution: Dawn Sauvignon can be profane, but you may be laughing too hard to notice. Dawn Sauvignon is actually the alter ego of Dawn Drouillard, formerly of Grand Marais and now a resident of Northeast Minneapolis. While the videos are new, Dawn Sauvignon has been around for a while. Drouillard said the character originated 15 or 16 years ago. “I met my husband while living in LA and our friend Don the Professor started calling me that,” she says. “I’ve tried to keep her separate from my personal life.”

While Drouillard has a career in cooking, she has a strong background in performance and majored in theatre in college. Her videos are more polished than the average amateur social media post. “I started doing the videos because I have no disposable income due to Covid-19 and I’m surrounded by all of my fashion accessories,” she says. “They’re not really worth anything now.”

She films the videos using a smart phone and a selfie stick. All are scripted in advance, so she can keep the video less than a minute in length. Everything Dawn Sauvignon talks about is real, says Drouilllard. That would include the country music-loving Satanist from Oklahoma. “We used to cook together and we bonded over country music,” she said. “That’s how we became friends.”

Drouillard owns a catering company and says “Covid is not good for that industry.” She caters for large events, which are unlikely to return to “normal” for a year or longer. So, what can a creative caterer do with all of her Covid-induced free time? Make social media videos, of course.

In that particular video, Dawn Sauvignon begins riffing off Loretta Lynn songs, except she’s a coronavirus survivor rather than a coal miner’s daughter. It’s one of the unexpected twists that make the videos fun to watch. Sometimes, Dawn Sauvignon delivers biting commentary.

“I started with TikTok because it has a really fun editing tool and you can add music,” she said about the videos, which are also posted on Instagram and Facebook.

“Dawn Sauvignon can say all sorts of things that Dawn Drouillard should keep quiet about,” Drouillard says.

The real Dawn’s goal with the videos is to provide some levity to her viewers against the serious backdrop of the pandemic. She does so by poking fun at herself. “I’ve got a closet full of nothing,” she says. “I don’t have a 401K, but I’ve got this pair of Gucci sunglasses...” So far, Drouillard has produced about a dozen videos and has scripts for nearly a dozen more. She’s also considering Dawn Sauvignon cooking videos, but she’ll need assistance with the camera work. If that happens, viewers will discover that Dawn Sauvignon really cooks. Sivertson Gallery celebrates 40 years GRAND MARAIS—Over the past few months, businesses around the world have had to adapt to a new reality brought about by COVID-19. In what continues to be an inspiring display of northern resiliency, North Shore businesses are doing their part in seeking out creative solutions—such as curbside pickup, online options, and social distancing measures—to continue operating in a safe, responsible manner. As co-founder and owner of two successful art galleries on the Shore, Jan Sivertson has sought strength in the “resiliency of Northern culture” throughout her life’s work, both as an artist and entrepreneur, and continues to do so while navigating the uncertainty of the current crisis. Like many retailers in the area, Jan had to close her stores to the public under the Governor’s most recent stay-at-home order. However, in demonstrating an impressive degree of her own “northern resiliency,” Jan was undeterred in finding cause to celebrate despite the unfortunate circumstances. As a result, Sivertson Gallery—Jan’s “destination art gallery” in downtown Grand Marais—is continuing to celebrate its 40th anniversary this year, while Siiviis—her second gallery located in Canal Park—celebrates its 25th year. Though much has changed in 40 years of operation, the Sivertson mission to “tell the story of ‘northern life’ in this unique place” has remained steadfast throughout.

Jan first moved to Cook County after graduating college in 1979, where she spent a year in Lutsen working as an artist practicing Batik. At the time, her father, Howard Sivertson, had recently moved to a new home in Grand Marais where he was working as an artist, painting scenes inspired from his childhood on Isle Royale. It was in the basement of Howard’s home in Grand Marais that he and Jan first started Sivertson Gallery in 1980. However, two years after opening, Jan moved the gallery to downtown Grand Marais in order to allow her father to refocus his energies on his painting, leaving Jan in charge of the business. It was during this time, around 1982, that Jan began collaborating with talented North Shore artists to continue developing the business. Many of the artists that she first collaborated with—such as Betsy Bowen, Liv Sivertson, David Gilsvik, Jim Brandenburg, and Rick Allen—continue to work with Jan and exhibit their work in her gallery to this day. Jan attributes much of her inspiration to the “nomadic and rugged nature of the commercial fishing community on the North Shore” of her upbringing, a lifestyle she remembers as being “inspired by adventure, resiliency and simplicity.” “Art of the North,” says Jan, “has always been my vision for selecting art and artists for the galleries. It resonates well with our customers, who are drawn to the North Shore of Lake Superior. These folks have a great admiration for life in the far north, the common denominator.” Building off of Sivertson Gallery’s success, Jan opened a second gallery in Duluth— Siiviis—in 1995.

“[Siiviis] started as Sivertson Gallery,” says Jan, “but I changed the name to Siiviis in 2012.” “My dad was raised in a commercial fishing family at Washington Island, Isle Royale,” says Jan, “but before that my grandfather and great uncle owned a fish production warehouse, Sivertson Brothers Fisheries, in Duluth just behind where I located Siiviis.” “The name ‘Siiviis,’” continues Jan, “comes from the name of my grandfather’s commercial fishing boat, The Sivi, that he designed and built by hand in the 60’s. [The Sivi] is now retired, resting on the shores of Washington Island.”

Jan had planned to celebrate her galleries’ anniversaries with many, many events this year, as she considers special events to be one of her gallery’s main marketing strategies. Unfortunately, due to the virus, she has had cancel and refocus her energies elsewhere. “Because of the cancellations,” says Jan, “I have been refocusing that energy into our website, newly launched in February, which has been a lifesaver.” “Choosing to celebrate their anniversaries,” continues Jan, “by creating a third store—sivertson.com—seems appropriate, especially considering the challenges of commerce these days.”

In addition to managing online orders from the new website, Jan has been kept busy applying for loans, focusing on the health and safety of her staff, and working with fellow artists and small business owners in finding creative solutions to weather the crisis. “My thinking has changed,” says Jan, “from waiting for the virus to peak and go away, to living with the virus as it appears it might be with us for quite some time.” Jan says that her and her Sivertson team plan to reopen the stores “when it feels safe to do so.” For more information and access to the new online shop, visit sivertson.com. —Eric Weicht

NORTH SHORE— Faced with the unusual circumstances brought about by the Covid-19 pandemic, museums and galleries along the North Shore are finding new ways to share their message. Concerned for the safety of visitors, volunteers and staff, they are unsure how and when they will open their doors to the public.

“What we’re trying to express to people is things are not going to look the same this summer,” said Anna Deschampe, chief of interpretation at Grand Portage National Monument. While the national monument is open, the buildings—the Heritage Center and Depot—are closed. Located with the Grand Portage Reservation, the monument is working with the local community to address health and safety concerns. The Grand Portage National Monument will have a phased reopening of services guided by the best available science, public health guidelines, and community characteristics. When the monument reopens social distancing will be implemented to protect staff and visitors. The use of face coverings will be strongly recommended. In the meantime, the monument has stepped up its online presence on Facebook. You can take a virtual tour of the museum and get updated information at the monument’s website: nps.gov/grpo. Up the Gunflint Trail at Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center, visitors can park at the gate and walk the trails on the grounds. Weekly, virtual nature walks are available via YouTube. ChikWauk’s tentative reopening is scheduled for July 10, dependent on state health advisories. “When we open, the number of people allowed inside will be limited,” said Suzanne Weber, president of the Gunflint Trail Historical Society, which operates the facility. “It will be strongly suggested that they wear a mask.” Like many museums, Chik-Wauk contains displays that are meant to be touched, which creates a concern for cleaning and hygiene. Weber said the museum is following cleaning recommendations in the handbook developed for local businesses, but says the handbook doesn’t address fur and feathers. They are looking for guidance from other museums on cleaning the furred and feathered displays in the nature center. At the Tweed Museum of Art on the University of Minnesota, Duluth campus, director Anja Chávez says she is in touch with other museums in Minnesota and beyond to compare notes about how to safely reopen and keep abreast of new information. “This is the first time we find ourselves in a true international community,” she said. “It’s good that we work together on impactful solutions to welcome back our communities. As museum professionals, we long to be there for our communities and we are

Although there remains a need to control the number of visitors and ensure social distancing occurs, that facility is trying to do so in a playful manner. While she is uncertain when the Tweed will reopen, there is already much preparation work going. Chávez says the staff is busy caring for collections, addressing space flow issues, renovating the facilities, conducting research, releasing teasers, and getting the Tweed situated virtually. A renovation project to remove carpet from the second floor and to reconsider use of the space is ongoing. Two UMD professors are collaborating with Tweed staff on a project to document the pandemic’s effect on local communities, with the working title “Stories of Wisdom Accentuated by Stress.” “These are unusual times for all of us, and this includes the Tweed,” she said. “When we reopen, the experience will be different, as well as welcoming and exciting. We are definitely looking forward to reconnecting with our communities in person” For Carrie Johnson, director of the Cook County Historical Society, having the staff to reopen three sites, the Cook County Museum, Johnson Heritage Post and Chippewa City Church is her biggest concern. “We are operated by elderly volunteers,” Johnson said. “We’ve already decided we won’t be using them this year.” Johnson has put out a call asking other, younger community members to step forward, but doesn’t know if enough will be available to operate three sites. If staffing is limited, the historical society will focus on one site, possibly the Johnson Heritage Post. Even though the facilities are closed, the historical society still responds to

people’s research requests. They are working behind the scenes to preserve collections and maintain historic sites. They are moving forward with a building plan to house the society’s archives, but are unable to launch a capital campaign for donations while the economy is slowed. Johnson said they are working on virtual exhibits for their website, cookcountyhistory.org. The current focus is a maritime exhibit on steamships that will be sent to schools and will include a public television documentary about the steamer America. The Thunder Bay Art Gallery hasn’t set a reopening date, because it is dependent on provincial guidance. At this writing, Ontario’s state of emergency extends to June 2. “We’ll hit the ground running whenever we can,” director Sharon Godwin wrote in an email. The gallery is active on its website, theag.ca with the Be Kind Project for kids. and is continuing outreach work with partner organizations. They provide participatory “zines” as part of the Roots to Harvest food deliveries to seniors and youth and deliver handson textile projects to other partner agencies who serve people overcoming addiction. There may be growing pains, but museums and galleries will adapt to the new realities of social distancing and hygiene. Godwin observed they are better poised to do so than some other institutions. “…galleries will probably have a much easier time welcoming the public (with social distancing) than live theatre, symphonies, etc,” she wrote. “It will be difficult for everyone, but a lot harder for them.”—Shawn Perich

Teachers and families learn together are hard to resist as they hike and explore the center’s 2000-acre campus and beyond,” said Walz. Families are enjoying doing the activities outside together too. One parent who used the Earthworks Adventure in Learning shared “What I expected to be 30 minutes of fresh air for Ben turned into a whole afternoon family project! Fun, educational and gave us a keener appreciation for nature in our own backyard.” It isn’t just the academic learning that’s making a difference to participating students. Spending time outdoors connecting with nature can be incredibly helpful during stressful times. Time in nature can benefit us all by: • Helping us leave behind the stress of processing the news media. • Increasing physical activity to promote personal health and build strong bodies.

FINLAND— Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center, a nonprofit organization in northern Minnesota, now provides free online lessons which help students meet MN Academic Standards while participating in hands-on activities while staying in their own back yards and neighborhoods. “When teachers who normally bring students to Wolf Ridge were forced to cancel their spring field trips, we asked how we could help them meet their learning goals in the coming months. They let us know that they wanted to be sure their students would learn outside, in the ‘real’ world, rather than be stuck on a screen all day. And they wanted kids to feel truly excited about learning as they headed out the door,” said Shannon Walz, associate director at the center. “We’re an accredited school, and our goal was to make something with the educational depth teachers expect from us. Many organizations have created educational videos, but as far as we know, ours is the only nature-focused, MN Standards-based curriculum, that comes complete with activities, stories (video or printed) and a built-in

method for students to share what they are learning with teachers.” Each new “Adventure in Learning” starts with an adventure with two of the center’s naturalists, then sends children outside to for hands-on learning activities such as building and testing their own solar oven, creating an ephemeral art piece modeled on the Earthworks movement, collecting data, or running experiments. Nature journaling is part of every lesson, with drawing and writing prompts that encourage participants to observe and reflect upon the natural world. For those accessing the learning materials online, the lesson begins on the Wolf Ridge website by clicking on a StoryMap, an easy to use educational guide containing images, videos, questions, and activities. Students with limited or no internet access can receive printed versions of the materials from their school teachers. “Our naturalists have had lots of fun creating the 10 minute “Adventure in Learning” videos. We know students learn best when they are excited about what they are learning, and Caroline and Robby’s enthusiasm

• Getting you and yours out of the house, experiencing and seeing new things! An accredited school with a 49-year history, Wolf Ridge Environmental Learning Center has accompanied over a half-million students and families outdoors, using each individual’s natural curiosity as a jumping-off point to growing new understanding. While academic learning prepares our future citizens for a lifetime of critical thinking and problem-solving, it is the feeling of connection that happens in nature that can sustain us through difficult times such as those we are in today. North Shore reopens GRAND MARAIS— Cook County has a new slogan this summer. Visit Cook County is advising visitors to “Please Keep One Moose Apart.” It’s a clever way to ask folks to practice social distancing. County businesses began slowly reopening during May. Visit Cook County developed a handbook of best practices that businesses can use to prevent the spread of Covid-19. They have also created a one-moose-apart poster for businesses to post. For visitors, the organization has created a pledge to reinforce the concepts of social distancing and personal hygiene. North Shore outfitters prepare for summer GUNFLINT TRAIL— Faced with a summer that is being defined by a global pandemic, canoe outfitters along the Gunflint Trail are doing all that they can to prepare for the coming season. Nobody knows exactly what sort of impact the pandemic will have on the number of visitors to the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) this summer. As lakes continue to warm and the forest springs to life, will folks turn to the Northwoods for the “ultimate” experience in social distancing? Or will more people be inclined to stay home to better shelter in place? SUMMER READING Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid

RECOMMENDED BY SHELBY LONNE-ROGENTINE Rarely does one find a fun story and a serious story in the same book. Race, privilege, identity, social class, unconscious bias, and motherhood are some of the heavier themes that are explored in Such a Fun Age by Kiley Reid. Emira Tucker is a 25-year-old African American college grad who is Alix Chamberlain’s babysitter for her two young children. Alix Chamberlain is a white blogger and public speaker who has built her brand on letter writing and asking for what she wants. One night while taking care of Alix’s daughter, Emira is wrongfully accused of kidnapping the little girl in a grocery store. Alix is shocked that this would happen. The rest of the story follows the domino effect of the scene in the supermarket and the dynamics of Alix and Emira’s relationship. The Atlantic phrases the central theme of the book as the “white pursuit of wokeness.” Reid writes with a clear voice that is impossible to walk away from; I finished the book in two days. This book is a funny, can’t-put-it-down, page turner with complex characters. I highly recommend it.

The Lightkeeper’s Daughters by Jean Pendziwol

RECOMMENDED BY RAE POYNTER Set against the windswept shores of Porphyry Island, The Lightkeeper’s Daughters is the adult debut novel of Thunder Bay author Jean Pendziwol. The Lightkeeper’s Daughters weaves together the tales of Elizabeth, a young woman growing up at the Porphyry Island light station before and during World War II, and Morgan, a modern-day teen made to do community service at a retirement home. The book opens with a tragic accident that leads to the discovery of Elizabeth’s father’s journals, journals that hold long-buried family secrets. Haunting, touching, and evoking a strong sense of place, The Lightkeeper’s Daughters is perfectly paced and captures the timeless fascination of life at a light station. Pairs well with summer afternoons and Superior views. 12

Duluth’s Historic Parks: Their First 160 Years

by Nancy S. Nelson and Tony Dierckins RECOMMENDED BY ERIC CHANDLER For the longest time, I thought Duluth’s parks existed because many were in the steep drainages where the topography stunted development. After reading Duluth’s Historic Parks: Their First 160 Years (Zenith City Press, 2017), I have the opposite impression. Every park in this town was made by choice. The book is filled with fun, detailed biographies of the people who drove the creation of parks and trails. Year after year, individuals and groups donated money and acreage for parks in partnership with the City of Duluth, and they still do today. This is my favorite quote from the book, written by the Duluth Board of Park Commissioners in 1911: The parks of a modern city bear witness that its people are members of one great family. They are the concrete expression of civic consciousness in its highest visible form. Read and learn how it’s possible for a community to show long-term, deep appreciation for the outdoors by intentionally creating shared public spaces. For a previous review I wrote shortly after it was published, visit: northernwilds.com/duluth-parks-long-history.

The Uncommon Reader by Alan Bennett

RECOMMENDED BY PETER FERGUS-MOORE The Uncommon Reader is in fact Queen Elizabeth the Second, deeply ensconced in the weighty (if not suffocating) traditions of English royalty, “England expects” and is essentially aware that her sole role in life is that of figurehead and giver of speeches on special occasions. However, Her Highness, through a chance encounter with one of her staff, becomes a reader—not of politics and economics and what have you, but that most dangerous material of all: novels. What’s more, the more she reads, the deeper she goes into the universe of conjured worlds and narratives, until she becomes indifferent to her Royal duties and distracted, to the horror and dismay of her staff and politicians. Alan Bennett (The Madness of King George; The Lady in the Van) is a terrific if understated comedian. The Uncommon Reader is a voyage through another’s life, a wonderful distraction from current realities.

Murder on the Red River by Marcie Rendon

RECOMMENDED BY GWEN DANFELT, DRURY LANE BOOKS This engrossing mystery takes place in the farm fields and smalltown bars of the Red River Valley. Cash is the magnetic main character, a young Ojibwe woman who is a farm hand by day and pool shark by night. She is pulled into help her friend Sheriff Wheaton with a murder. I felt like I was there, riding along in Cash’s truck, day-dreaming and chain smoking. Anishinaabe author Marcie Rendon has a second book about Cash as well (Girl Gone Missing) which is good, because you will want to keep reading.

The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin

RECOMMENDED BY PETER FERGUS-MOORE A. J. Fikry, owner of a small, independent (read “vulnerable”) bookstore in an isolated New England island town, is probably as disagreeable a person as you’ll ever meet. True, he is recently bereaved through the death of his wife, his store is suffering dangerous deterioration in finances, and then one morning after a bender, he awakens to find that his one most prized and potentially valuable possession, a rare first edition, has vanished. He retreats into a shell bristling with suspicion and anger. A fatal spiritual tailspin is all but predicted when a young girl named Maya is abandoned in his bookshop by her desperate mother. With her is a note that reads, in part: “She is VERY SMART...I want her to grow up in a place with books and among people who care about those kinds of things...I love her very much, but I can no longer take care of her...” Thus begins the “stories” of A.J. Fikry’s life, told through a series of episodes that chronicle his transformation, and the relationships that build around and through him. Far from sentimental or manipulative, The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry is an excellent novel of death, life and second chances.

T

hese are the poems of a man who built his own house in the woods and earns his living by fishing Lake Superior in an open skiff. People who work hard outside learn to conserve energy, so it’s not surprising that Steve Dahl’s poems fit the definition of poetry a friend once offered me: the most said in the fewest words. In their brevity, honesty, humility, wry humor, and nearness to nature, Dahl’s best poems keep company with the work of such good men as the Spaniard Antonio Machado and the Norwegian Olav Hauge. —Bart Sutter, author of Nordic Accordion: Poems in a Scandinavian Mood Minnesota book awards for poetry, fiction and creative nonfiction

I

meant to take a quick peek at these poems early one morning, and return to them later, but ended up reading all of them, certain lines playing through my mind all day. “nothing from darkness / grows like lilacs / in springtime holy / upon the hill.” These poems are spare and precise, quiet and essential, as essential as the things they praise and ponder. Each one: “a sparrow / just to the ground / from the branch above / to gather a seed.” The poems in this collection want to be read aloud. There is a subtle rhythm in Dahl’s language here, a rhythm reminiscent of water lapping gently on a rowboat. They left me stilled, awake, and grateful to be living in this world.

Bob worked at the Chicago Stockyards and from an early time came to know hard work and long hours. His Chicago roots grew deep and except for a tour of Europe including fighting in the Battle of the Bulge, serving in the Tank Destroyers and as a machine gunner in the 104th Infantry Division, always lived within the confines of the City. Bob met his love, Patricia Ann Donahoe, and together they raised their two sons on Melvina Avenue. Each son took from their parents a love of reading and grew up in a warm and nurturing home. Lively discourse was expected. Bob and Pat knew that their boys were living a city life but each summer they would hit the road for Wisconsin, then Minnesota, then the farthest reaches of Ontario in an attempt to teach the sons an appreciation of the outdoors. Bob was also free to pursue his favorite activity, fishing. Some of his poetry evolved from his time in the forest and on the water. Other verse came from his experiences in the War and I don’t know if it was a true catharsis, but the emotion of his experience is profound. Still other rhymes resulted from his good humor and he was quick to make light of our species, himself included. Bob loved Pat and the poems he sent to her leave no doubt that he treasured her so much. From war to family to love and humor, this collection of poems will delight those who read them and provide a glimpse into a gentle man who we have great reason to miss every day.

Points North Doc never asked for anything in return By Shawn Perich

Sometimes people enter your life by happenstance and become your friend. Doc Morgan was one of those people. Professionally, Dr. Paul R. Morgan was a successful oral surgeon in Toronto, Ontario. But I came to know him because he owned a fly-in fishing camp east of Sault Ste. Marie. Doc wasn’t much of a fisherman. We never spent time on the water together. He had purchased Blue Fox Camp to create a youth camp, where disadvantaged kids could learn outdoor skills like rock climbing and paddling. Fishing customers in the spring and fall would help pay the bills. If that sounds like an impetuous plan, well, that’s the way Doc rolled. Blue Fox is located on a system of lakes containing lake, brook and rainbow trout. My friend Greg Schrantz of Minneapolis, who did taxidermy and print framing for Doc, told me how 3- and 4-pound rainbows spawned in a creek that ran through camp. The surrounding forest was dotted with small lakes stocked with brook trout that grew to large sizes. Since Doc wanted to promote fly-fishing, Schrantz introduced us. That September, Schrantz and I met Doc at Blue Fox Camp. It was the beginning of a long friendship. Doc was one of a kind. Even in camp, he usually wore surgical scrubs. No one knew when he slept. After full days of surgery, he dashed around Toronto in the evening to buy supplies for camp. On Fridays, he made the six-hour drive north, napping in his van at the float plane base so he could fly in at daybreak. Arriving at camp, he was a whirlwind: checking in with the college kids who were his staff, inspecting various remodeling and construction projects, greeting and visiting with the guests, and immersing himself in all things Blue Fox. Doc transformed Blue Fox from a relic of an earlier era into a comfortable, rustic resort. He built a shower building to make the camp more welcoming to women. This was coupled with renovating the cabins and decorating them with Canadian Indigenous art. Meals were prepared and served at the main lodge by a college-aged chef. Some of his young staff were certified instructors in rock climbing and paddling. He approached fly-fishing and improving the area’s trout fishery with zeal. Over the course of a decade, I watched him work with provincial fisheries staff to address overfishing for lake trout with a reduced 14

He even instituted a fall fisheries survey to assess brook trout populations. A fivepound brook trout on my office wall that was the fruit of his efforts. There was much more to Doc than Blue Fox. He once flew Vikki and I to Toronto to help promote Blue Fox at a fly-fishing

cause, as Doc explained, they needed a place to live. Helping others was really what Doc was all about. In doing so, he touched an extraordinary number of lives in many ways. For instance, he would mention travelling to the Yukon and the Cayman Islands to perform oral surgery. His door was always open to Indigenous artists, student athletes

While we were there, he treated us to dinner and a theater performance. We also visited a home he owned on the outskirts of Toronto primarily to house a portion of his art collection. It was so filled with art that one bedroom was stuffed with floor-to-ceiling stacks of framed prints. Doc didn’t live in there. At the time, two young fellows from Newfoundland were staying in the home be-

and even kids at risk who needed a place to stay while in Toronto. He was a patron of many artists and a helping hand and mentor to many kids. What surprised me most was how many folks he knew on the North Shore. Angela Benedict of Thunder Bay met Doc when she was 12 years old and growing up on a reserve on northern Lake Huron. She was playing outside one day when her mother asked if she’d like to attend a sum-

mer camp. Thirty minutes later, she was on her way to Blue Fox. There she experienced kayaking, canoeing and rock-climbing, developing an enduring passion for the outdoors. She went to Blue Fox as a camper for four years and then worked there for two summers during high school. She went on to win rock-climbing competitions and compete in kayaking marathons. Doc became a positive force in her life. “Doc was always supportive,” she said, “but he would leave it up to you to take the initiative and do it.” They stayed in touch. When she was a broke college student, occasionally a plane ticket would arrive in the mail, allowing her to attend a distant roller derby tournament. Later, she would meet him for dinner when on work trips to Toronto. The next day, the front desk of the hotel where she was staying would call to say she had a package: paints provided by Doc to support her budding career as an artist. More recently, when she was taken to Toronto for open heart surgery, Doc came to the waiting room to sit with her fiancé through the ordeal.

“He never asked for anything in return,” she said. Minnesota North Shore artist Neil Sherman got to know Doc while attending Lourdes High School in Rochester, Minn. Doc worked in Rochester early in his career and had a long association with the school, as an athletic coach and as a donor. He sponsored Sherman to attend a couple of sports camps while in high school. Later, as a greenhorn to Northwoods living, Sherman spent a winter working at Blue Fox. “It prepared me for the life I live now,” Sherman said. “And he was always supportive of my art.” Another Cook County resident who met Doc while attending Lourdes High School was Tim Ramey, owner of Naniboujou Lodge. The Catholic school had a limited sports program at the time, with football being the only fall offering. When the school started a cross-country running team, Ramey wondered if he should switch from football to running. He decided to ask one of his football coaches, Doc. “I always saw him as someone who was approachable,” Ramey said. “He commanded my respect.” Doc’s advice? Take up running. Ramey did. He went on to win Catholic School state meets. Doc also sponsored him to participate in the Boston Marathon for two consecutive years. Running became an enduring aspect of his life. Decades later, Ramey was inducted into the Lourdes High School Hall of Fame. Unbeknownst to him, Doc planned to fly

Shawn Perich’s POINTS NORTH online

from Toronto to Rochester for the event. Inclement weather prevented him from doing so. Ramey, nevertheless, was moved by Doc’s gesture. “He was so generous and giving,” Ramey said. “He invested his life in me.” In a way, Doc saved Ramey’s life. I was present for Ramey’s darkest hour, when he was struck by a collapsing chimney as our volunteer fire department battled a house fire. Buried beneath hot rubble, he wasn’t breathing as we began to rescue him. As our crew pulled the rubble from his unconscious torso, Ramey miraculously started to breathe. His body instinctively kicked into the strong, steady breathing rhythm of a runner, almost certainly saving his life. I remain humbled by what we experienced the night. When I told that story to Doc, he was more concerned with how Ramey was recovering. He asked about him, as well as other mutual acquaintances every time we spoke. He had an extraordinary memory for people he’d met previously, even if it was years ago. Last September, we had lunch when Doc and his friend Mary Dierling passed through Grand Marais. It was great to see him. Doc invited me to visit Blue Fox this summer. I was really looking forward to that trip, but it won’t come to be. Sometime over Easter weekend, Doc’s life was taken by someone residing in his home who he was trying to help. Call it senseless. Call it tragic irony. Call it whatever you want. For those of us who knew this incredible, selfless human being, all we can call it is grief.

Cloquet river gets clean bill of health ST. PAUL—The Cloquet River Watershed has very good overall water quality, and forest protection is critical to preserve it, according to a draft report recently released by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA) and local partners. The agency is seeking public comments through June 3, about the protection and restoration strategies described in the water quality report. The Cloquet River watershed covers nearly 508,000 acres southwest of Superior National Forest and Cloquet Valley State Forest. The upper reaches of the river, above Island Lake, are designated as primitive under the St. Louis River Management Plan. The watershed contains four major reservoir lakes and a series of smaller lakes that are characteristic of glacial till and sand landscapes. The MPCA’s report, known as a watershed restoration and protection strategy (WRAPS), is part of the MPCA’s approach to gauging the health of Minnesota’s 80 major watersheds. After intensive water monitoring, the agency and partners identify conditions that are stressing fish and bugs, as well as conditions that foster healthy fish and insect communities. Waters that fail to meet standards are placed on the Impaired Waters List. MPCA monitoring found that just three streams (Beartrap, Hellwig, Petrel) and one lake (Sand) are not meeting water quality standards in the Cloquet River Watershed. After evaluating water quality in a watershed, the MPCA develops a WRAPS report that local partners use to restore impaired waters and protect healthy ones. Hiking School of Hard Knocks By Annie Nelson

Annie Nelson stands on an overlook on the Superior Hiking Trail in September 2019 during her second thru-hike of the trail. | ANNIE NELSON

While backpacking on the Border Route Trail north of Grand Marais, a black fly flew straight down my ear canal. I froze; the fly buzzed madly inside my ear. I promptly went crazy with the need to get this fly out of my ear. Yelling, jumping around, I poured water into my ear until the fly drowned, which caused an ear infection a couple days later. During the past three years, I’ve hiked more than 2,000 miles on north woods trails. I’ve learned a lot of lessons the hard way. Welcome to the Hiking School of Hard Knocks.

Bugging Out After my bug-induced temporary insanity, I learned some tricks for managing the ticks, mosquitoes and black flies, because I love hiking during bug season. How else am I going to eat my body weight in fresh thimbleberries? Instead of pesticides, I prefer to use what I call “bug armor,” a layered clothing approach. I hike in baggy, quick-drying pants, which prevent bugs from making contact with my skin. The same goes for my shirt: longsleeved, quick-drying, baggy. I tuck my pants into my socks, and my shirt into my pants. I use a head net, but also a full suit of bug netting made by Coghlan’s. If the bugs are still too bad, I wear my rain gear, which nothing can bite through. For ticks, I check myself every time I stop for a break, and again at the end of the day.

Beware the Animal Trail As a novice day hiker, I thought only humans made trails. Animals just wander wherever they want through the trees and underbrush, right? Hiking in Rock Bridge State Park in Columbia, Mo. near dusk, I saw a narrow trail cutting off the main path. Eager to explore, I followed it as it wound its way past a series of sinkholes. Suddenly, the trail disappeared. No big deal, I thought, I’ll just turn back. When I turned around, the trail had disappeared from behind me as well. Like a thunderclap, I realized I’d been following an animal trail. I was miles from the trailhead, and had only a vague idea of its direction. The sun was setting and I guessed I had about an hour of sunlight. I had half a 20 oz. bottle of water and half a Snicker’s bar in my purse. I didn’t have a map, compass, or headlamp. I didn’t own

Heat and Humidity Almost Killed Me, Twice The two times I’ve come closest to calling for emergency help while in the backcountry were both due to mismanaging the heat and humidity.

Double-check Your Gear During a pouring rainstorm in August 2017 on the Superior Hiking Trail, I stood shivering violently beneath a pine tree. In the low 50s with winds gusting 10-15 miles per hour, I’d been hiking in the rain for hours, and was starting to wonder if I was in danger of developing hypothermia. My five-year-old rain coat was no longer waterproof. I hadn’t thought to check it before leaving on a three-month trek. In camp that night, I found huge cracks in the seam sealing. When I went to a gear shop to replace it, a clerk told me most raincoats lose their waterproofing after a few years. I had no idea. Smiling despite hiking in a raincoat that is no longer waterproof on the Superior Hiking Trail in 2017. | ANNIE NELSON

Setting out from a campsite at Pine Lake, I climbed up a short ridge on legs that felt like Jell-o. My vision went blurry, fuzzing black at the edges. I lay down on the trail, thoroughly confused as to what was going on. After resting for a full hour and only feeling worse, like I was going to pass out, my hiking partner and I backtracked to camp and took an unplanned rest day. If we hadn’t taken a wilderness first aid course as a safety precaution before my hike, we never would’ve known I was probably developing a case of hyponatremia, when the level of salt in your body gets so low, your cells don’t function normally. Serious cases can result in coma and death. I’d been drinking tons of water, but eating barely any salt or electrolytes. I disliked salty foods and hadn’t packed any. Even my trail mix was salt-free. As soon as we figured out what was going on, I stopped drinking water, and started sipping small amounts of salted Gatorade. I ate my hiking partner’s salty trail mix. I lay in my tent feeling so terrible, I came close to pushing the SOS button on my InReach several times. After a day of rest, I was still weak, but able to continue hiking. In July 2019, I was halfway through the Trap Hills in a very remote part of Upper Peninsula Michigan. It was so hot and humid, I felt like my brain was melting. The Trap Hills are gorgeous, similar to the Sawtooth Mountains, and full of hard climbs. Over a period of days, I overexerted myself while being unable to escape the heat. Eventually, I got so weak, I fell and injured myself pretty badly. I decided to retreat to town.

a cell phone. “I might have to spend the night out here,” I thought. Panicking, I did the exact thing you’re not supposed to do. I charged off into the woods in a direction I hoped was heading back to the main path. I never found my animal trail again, but after half an hour of bushwhacking, I found a human trail.

Afterward, other hikers told me I’d probably come close to suffering heat exhaustion, which can escalate quickly to heat stroke and kill you. I’d learned another scary lesson: find ways to cool yourself down if you start feeling sick in the heat. Don’t just drink water, get in a lake or creek. Avoid hiking during the hottest part of the day. Take your shirt off, soak it in the creek, and put it back on.

With 20 more years of hiking experience, I know animals create trails that can look identical to human-built trails. Beavers create paths while dragging trees that can look professionally built by trail crews. I made several mistakes on that hike. I didn’t let anyone know where I was and when to expect me back. I didn’t have any way to call for help. I had no navigation tools. Now I always carry a basic survival kit, even on day hikes: Two water bottles, a water filter, enough food for a full day, an emergency blanket, my rain gear, a warm layer, a compass, maps, a cell phone with a GPS app, a knife, a head lamp, a small first-aid kit, a back-up battery for my phone, and fire-starting materials. I also make sure someone knows where I am and when I’ll be back.

On the Border Route Trail in July 2017, the humidity hovered around 90 percent. Sweat was pouring off of me. I was chugging water. I was about to learn, in the scariest way possible, that overhydrating can be as dangerous as dehydration.

Hopefully, learning from my hard knocks will help your lessons in the woods feel more like soft taps. Happy hiking!

I was much happier hiking in the rain once I bought a new raincoat. | ANNIE NELSON NORTHERN  WILDS

It is impossible to ignore art when you are on the North Shore. There is a plethora of galleries, institutions like the Grand Marais Art Colony and the North House Folk School, and a laid-back, creative ambiance that permeates the atmosphere. It’s isn’t unusual to see a plein air painter behind an easel along a Lake Superior beach or to strike up a conversation with someone who turns out to be a carver or a fiber artist. Not only that, but many of the artists who reside here are renowned well beyond this faraway corner of Minnesota.

Not all artists wear hip waders, but Grand Marais Art Colony founder Birney Quick [ABOVE] was also an angler and known for his Monday evening fish fries, as well as his paintings [LEFT]. The powerful landscape has inspired local artists like Howard Sivertson [TOP]. | SUBMITTED How did the North Shore become such a hub for artists? It is fair to say the area has attracted artists for more than a century. The Johnson Heritage Post in Grand Marais houses the permanent collection of works by Anna C. Johnson, whose husband operated a trading post on the site in the ear-

ly 1900s. At mid-century, the Grand Marais Art Colony came to be when, in 1947, Birney Quick began summer workshops for students at the Minneapolis School of Art. Artists were drawn to the beauty of the North Shore and the comradery of working and socializing with other artists.

“The art colony attracts like-minded individuals,” says board co-chair Lynn Speaker. “They are supportive of one another and share ideas.” Another artistic anchor in the community is the Sivertson Art Gallery, which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year. “Sivertson Gallery was essential to having art visible in the community,” says Grand Marais artist Betsy Bowen. Bowen, who has been active with the Art Colony since 1970, believes that having places where creative types can hang out is important to developing an art scene. She remembers a basement pub called the Rathskeller in a place called The Common Ground that drew “Bohemian-type people.” It attracted a different crowd than other local establishments, had live music and was a venue where local art could be shown on the walls. “It helped foster an arts community,” she says. For Jan Sivertson, owner of Sivertson Gallery, the North Shore’s draw can be summed up in one word. “It’s the geography,” she says. Arts towns often come to be due to a combination of geography and guru, she explains, giving the example of Santa Fe and Georgia O’Keefe. On the North Shore, Birney Quick was the first guru, attracting many talented artists. The North Shore also produced remarkable homespun talent, such as George Morrison and Howard “Bud” Sivertson, for whom Lake Superior was an endless muse. Quick, who died in 1981, invited Hazel Belvo to teach at the Art Colony that year. She then became a driving force for the Art Colony and the local art scene. “Hazel has drawn more serious artists to the area through her mentorship program with the Grand Marais Art Colony,” Sivertson says. Tourism promotion and development during recent decades has benefitted the arts. Bowen says the shift to an upscale tourist economy and the associated marketing efforts have given the arts a greater presence in the community. New and expanded amenities such as breweries, restaurants and coffee shops add to the creative vibe. She also points out that several new institutions have made a difference, too. “The Grand Marais Playhouse has been around since the early 1970s,” Bowen says. “The Arrowhead Center for the Arts (where plays are performed) was built in 1997. That showed the arts were important to the community.”

In retrospect, the North Shore’s art scene reached critical mass around the turn of the 21st Century. The local public radio station, WTIP, the North House Folk School, the Solstice Pageant puppet show and the Betsy Bowen Studio all came to be about 20 years ago. In the ensuing two decades, the arts have become a driving force for North Shore tourism. Artists and folks who appreciate the arts often make return visits. “One of the pleasures of being part of the Grand Marais Art Colony is watching people be introduced to the community and the environment,” says Speaker. “It draws them back. Some have been attending the Art Colony for 20 years.” This has allowed artists and galleries along the North Shore to thrive. Many of these entrepreneurial enterprises have matured into established businesses. “If you look at the annual fall gallery tour, most of the participating studios have been around for a while,” says Sivertson.

Making a living as an artist is challenging no matter where you choose to live. A growing number of North Shore artists are making a go of it. It is likely there will be even more self-supporting artists in the future. As for now, artists, like everyone else, are figuring out how to step forward in a changing world. “I feel worse for musicians, because what they do is based on get-togethers,” says Bowen. “I think we’ll (artists) figure it out, but it will take a couple of years.” Artists are able to sell their works online, although it isn’t the same experience for the customer as a gallery or studio visit. In a time of social distancing, the socializing aspect of enjoying art is difficult to achieve. But the very human need for art remains. “Art will happen anyway,” says Bowen. “You can’t stop it.”

A View of the North Shore The North Shore has many artists, each with a voice and vision of their own. However, they seem to have one thing in common: almost all of the artists find their inspiration from the North Shore—whether it’s Lake Superior, the Boundary Waters, the people or the animals that roam the woods. Here’s just a few depictions of what makes the North Shore so special.

From leaf to loom

Local artist weaves the living landscape into clothing and textiles CREATIVE SPACE: By Julia Prinselaar As the summer’s wild plants begin to color the northern Ontario landscape, one Thunder Bay artist is waiting with her harvest basket. Tuija Hansen carefully snips lupins, a prolific plant that blooms along roadsides and highways throughout Canada, and transforms them into something new. Bundles of leaves and stems will be heated in large containers to make a dye-bath, a solution of pigments and water used to transfer the dye to fibers of yarn and other textiles. “Surprisingly, the leaves and stems [of lupins] make a wonderful, bright yellow dye. It is so widespread locally in Thunder Bay that it provides a sustainable harvest year after year, and, yellow can be used to achieve many other colours in combination with different dyes and mordants,” says Hansen. A Thunder Bay-based textile artist known for fashion design and fiber arts, Hansen credits her creative progression to the matriarchs in her family. “As a little girl, I learned to hand-stitch clothing for my stuffed animals from both of my grandmothers. They encouraged my creativity at every opportunity, and I owe a lot of my passions today to both of them. As a teen, I enjoyed sewing my own clothes and re-fashioning old clothing items into new creations. I also experimented with painting, drawing, and sculpture in my high school art classes. I enjoyed drama and dance as well—basically, any way I could get my high school credits creatively,” she says. Hansen has since embarked on a lifelong journey in the arts. Recycling or upcycling old items into new are hallmarks of her work. “Giving new life to old clothing and linens has been a constant motivation for me whether it is through winter-wear designed for our climate or in rag-rugs to decorate our homes,” says Hansen.

At age 20, she attended the Kootenay School of the Arts in Nelson, British Columbia to pursue fiber arts, and returned to Thunder Bay to open the Craft Collective, a boutique space for artisans and clothing designers to create and sell their works in the Bay Algoma business district. During this time, she completed a degree in Visual Arts at Lakehead University with a major in Printmaking, followed by a Master of Arts degree in Social Justice Studies. “I guess I’ve always had this thirst for knowledge and learning,” Hansen says. “I like being part of education, whether I’m learning or instructing.” With her degree in hand, she traveled to an artist residency in Iceland in 2018, funded by the Ontario Arts Council, which reignited her passion for natural plant dyes and weaving, and continue to fuel her creative practice today. “I’ve enjoyed dying fabrics, but I didn’t give weaving a chance until I went to Iceland,” recalls Hansen. “[The country] has really rich history of wool production, sheep farming and dying of that wool. Naturally, if you don’t knit—and I’m not a knitter or crotchetier—then weaving is a great way to use those wools. I lived there during the sheep round up, and I was really lucky enough to meet a really prolific Icelandic plant dyer who shared her practice with us. I just couldn’t resist.” Driven to pursue weaving, Hansen traveled to Kristinestad, on the Gulf of Bothnia in western Finland, with her second-cousin and artist Caroline Kajorinne for an artist residency in 2019. Part of the journey included a trip to the town and river where their family lived and worked. “I knew I needed to get weaving again and that I also needed to continue the work in Finland, specifically, where my grandfather’s family migrated from,” says Hansen. Miraculously, the pair managed to find

imbue either literally or conceptually into my works,” she says.

The residency explored Hansen and Kajorinne’s mutual heritage while collaborating on a weaving representative of reflections on the Kyro River, where their grandfathers were born. Hansen foraged for native plant materials in the region and dyed enough wool to weave a wall hanging, in the series called Mapping Via Plant Dyes, a project that she is presently continuing in the Thunder Bay area, where her family settled after immigrating from Finland.

Hansen spoke to me from her home studio in Thunder Bay. A large, 4-foot square by 4-foot high loom sits as a centerpiece in the middle of a bright, sunlit room. Half weaving area, half sewing area, her studio is “full to capacity.” But it is the place where she finds balance, calmness, and time to reflect.

Northern Ontario shares much of the same Boreal forest species as Finland. Hansen has used the bark of birch and alder, some flowers, and most often the leafy parts of plants and trees when dyeing, including willow, juniper, yarrow, tansy and other native vegetation. “There is something circular and very satisfying to me when I create having gathered both inspiration and physical materials (respectfully foraging) from the land to

“I’ve kind of always thought that working in textiles is my calling, and that it’s also a slow practice and meditative practice. I think about the history that comes with those ways of making. I don’t have any direct ancestors that I know of in Finland who were prolific weavers or dyers, but I can meditate on the act of migrating from that place to the lands known as Canada, and that also allows me to think about my family’s place and the history of colonialism in Canada.” To see Hansen’s work, visit: tuijahansen. com. He’s referring to Eric Pollard, also known as Actual Wolf, a longtime Duluth songwriter who produced Boxcar’s debut album Cheap Hotel, which came out May 19. It’s 10 tracks of driving, catchy tunes that are full of American roots and distinct country twang. “I grew up listening to Led Zeppelin and The Doors and all that kind of stuff,” says Shippee. “I didn’t really get into Dylan and even Willie Nelson stuff until college. But when I started playing music, and eventually writing songs, that’s where I kind of drifted and connected with the most when I would play.”

“I was really encouraged by my buddy Dave Simonett,” says Shippee, mentioning the Trampled by Turtles singer. “He and I were roommates in college. And then just watching his career turn into what it did, we’re still very close. But he was a huge inspiration for me.” For most of the past decade Shippee was playing in an energetic band called Glen’s Neighbor. After many of the members departed, he reconnected with guitarist Nate Gannon for a new project, adding bassist Russ Sackett and drummer Rick Bruner after a few gigs. The band has been playing together for around a year.

Boxcar consists of [L TO R] Nate Gannon, Blake Shippee, Rick Bruner and Russ Sackett. | RYAN TISCHER “I reached out to Eric and sent him a demo we had cut up at [Sparta Sound] with Rich Mattson, and he was on board right away,” says Shippee. “The tracks kind of lend themselves to his wheelhouse.” Shippee also sought out sound man Tom Fabjance, who had done work with Trampled by Turtles, to engineer. Using a brief block of time Fabjance was free from touring, the band and crew recorded the whole album at Shippee’s cabin in the tiny northern town of Brimson, Minn. “It was a solid team. And everybody really contributed well and worked together very well, too,” says Shipee. “Eric and I had a lot of the production ideas and Tom was really able to bring it to life.” Footage of the recording sessions have been turned into a music video for the track “Brave New World,” released in April on YouTube. The title track of the album came much later in the process, according to Shippee. “Eric and I would just sit at his house and just kind of go through them and he’s like, ‘Eight of these are really pretty strong, but I want you to write like three or four more,’” says Shippee. That extra creative push led to the birth of “Cheap Hotel” and soon a unique oppor-

tunity for a title and some great album art presented itself. “My friend had purchased the Voyageur Lakewalk Inn by chance, because it was going to get taken down...” says Shippee. The unique downtown Duluth building was planned to be replaced with a high-rise residential tower this year. “It’ll be really cool to think that it’s going away, and to know that it’s just sort of captured on an album cover.” With a piece of Duluth immortalized through the record, and 10 strong songs under their belt, Boxcar is in prime form. Though amidst the pandemic, Shippee says he doesn’t foresee many virtual concerts for the band. Rather, he’s grateful and focused on the future. “Mostly I’m just proud to have the opportunity to be in the position to be doing what we’re doing,” says Shippee. “And everyone’s still having fun, which is why we do it and the most important part of it, so as long as we’re doing that our plan is to keep going and make another one.” Cheap Hotel is available on all major streaming platforms, as well as on CD and vinyl.

The North Shore Dish Smoking Meats: Low and Slow is the Secret By Chuck Viren

With so much time spent at home these days, people are attempting do-it-yourself projects more than ever. People are also spending more time in the kitchen. One culinary skill that few have mastered is the art of smoking meat. Sure, we all can flip burgers and brats over a hot grill, but smoking meats, it seems, takes some specialized knowledge and a whole lot of patience. We spoke with some pros who feature smoked meats at their restaurants: Chris Callender at the Wunderbar Eatery and Glampground and Kate and Jeremey Keeble at Hungry Hippie Tacos. Their main message: go slow and get a good thermometer. Of course, one can just skip the learning curve and order take-out. Chris Callender is a professionally trained chef who has been working in Cook County for around 20 years, including a stint as chef at Lutsen Resort. His passion for fly fishing has also led him to work as a fly-fishing pro at Stone Harbor Wilderness supply in Grand Marais. Lately he has served as chef at the Wunderbar, where he has put his 50-year-old LyfeTyme smoker to heavy use. He has a rotating selection of meats for his sliders, offering pulled pork, brisket, or chicken. He will smoke corn and chicken for soup and even prepares a smoked mushroom chowder. During these difficult times, the Wunderbar has been offering free meals daily for anyone who cares to stop by their porch. On the day I visited, he had chicken noodle soup, grilled chicken breast with blended rice pilaf, and roasted potatoes. A person can smoke meats with their trusty old backyard Weber, but Callender does recommend that if someone is serious about smoking meats, they should get their hands on a smoker with an offset fire box. It is much easier to control the heat, which is crucial to the process. He also said those interested in smoking their own meats should invest in a high-quality meat thermometer that allows them to carefully monitor the temperature. He likes a digital thermometer that can be calibrated. Another difference from grilling is that smoking meats usually utilizes a combination of charcoal and wood. Often, people will smaller cookers will use wood chips. This offers a lot of opportunity for diversity and experimentation. Callender is fond of maple, apple and crabapple. Many also use birch and poplar. You must also decide between seasoned or green wood. This might depend on what you are cooking.

At Hungry Hippie Tacos in Grand Marais, Kate Keeble perfects the recipes and the brines, while her husband Jeremy handles the smoker. | SUBMITTED Callender likes to start out his brisket with green wood. It is smokier and burns cooler. He says people can pre-soak wood chips, which allows them to experiment with flavor profiles. You could, for example, soak wood in wine or bourbon. A primary secret to smoking meats is to use a small fire. According to Callender, “Low and slow is the secret to smoking most things.” Another piece of advice he has for novices is to keep it simple at first and work up to more complicated projects after they get the hang of it. Perhaps at

first just think of the smoker as an outdoor oven. That way people can use the basic times and temperatures as they would in their homes. However, the higher the temperature, the more you have to watch over the meat. This would work well, for example, with a whole chicken or a pork loin. Callender advises pulling such items from the smoker before they reach their desired temperature. Cover them in foil and they will continue cooking. However, the longer you roast the meat, the more tender it will become. Those big

pork shoulders or briskets? Plan on up to 15 hours of cooking time. They are cooked at a low temperature, especially in the beginning, up to around 225 degrees, for a long time. The key to when they are done, however, is still the temperature. If the goal is pulled pork, it won’t begin to shred unless it is at least 160 degrees. Brisket should be tender enough that it can be shredded with two forks. When Kate and Jeremey Keeble bought Hughie’s Tacos (now Hungry Hippie Tacos), they offered the ever-popular fry bread NORTHERN  WILDS

tacos, or a hefty burrito, with their house roasted pork or brisket. Kate and Jeremy come at the business of smoking meats from two different perspectives. Kate is a professionally trained chef with a long history at restaurants in the Twin Cities, such as Muffaletta, Café Biaggio and Patisserie Margo, and as executive chef at the Gunflint Lodge. Jeremy learned to smoke meats while growing up in southern Illinois. He became especially inspired to smoke meats after a trip to Austin, Texas, where he ate at the James Beard Award winning Franklin Barbecue. Jeremey handles the smoker and Kate perfects the recipes and the brines. They also advise purchasing a good meat thermometer and the need to go slow. Jeremey talked about the stall. The stall occurs at around 160 to 180 degrees and lasts from two to six hours. Up until that point, the meat temperature rises steadily, but then the temperature plateaus, or stalls, for an extended period of time. If taken out at the wrong time during the stall, the meat can be tough, but if one waits for several hours, the temperature rises again. When the temperature reaches around 205 degrees, it will be tenderized, because the tough collagens in the connective tissue will have broken down by some strange magic of chemistry. They start out their pork shoulder and brisket at 180 degrees— the pork shoulders for six hours and the brisket for four. For the pork, they turn the temp up to 250 and to 225 for the brisket. Both cook for around 14 hours total. With a smaller home cooker and less meat, the cook times will be less. They also do a lot of whole chickens. They like to brine them.

[RIGHT] As head chef at the Wunderbar in Grand Marais, Chris Callendar has a rotating selection of meats for his

sliders, offering pulled pork, brisket, or chicken. | SUBMITTED They suggested a person could start with a simple salt and sugar brine and smoke the chicken, breast side down, for two to three hours. The chickens they roast for the restaurant are in the smoker for four to five hours. At Hungry Hippie Tacos, they have been adding more smoked meat options. They have offered mole-spiced chicken and sides of smoked chicken legs and ribs. During

stay-at-home they have been doing meal kits for take-out, including whole chickens and racks of ribs.

by mid-June. Details for the menu are still in process, but they will definitely add smoking fish to their repertoire.

They will also be partnering with Abby Tofte and Sam Hedstrom, proprietors of The Big Lake in Grand Marais, to operate The Fisherman’s Daughter in the former location of the Dockside Fish Market. Their plans to open this business this spring have been put on hold, but they hope to be open

As for Callender? He is scheming menu options that include his smoked meats. Rumor has it that a series of poutines made with pulled pork, brisket, or chicken is in the works. I may just have to throw caution to the wind and go all-in on poutine once more.

Summer on the North Shore is going to look different this year. But with a few adjustments, loving concern for our neighbors, and wise choices, we can still enjoy all that summer has to offer. | STOCK

Farmers markets are essential services, so they are allowed to continue during the pandemic. However, we are expected to offer ample hand washing stations, encourage social distancing with our layout, and not offer any samples or products to be consumed on site. There is Good News By Amy Schmidt This is no normal summer. Yes, there will be mosquitos, bonfires and ditches bursting with wildflowers. But there will also be Covid-19. Whether we want it to or not, summer on the North Shore is going to look different this year. Still, a North Shore summer comes but once a year and if you’ve lived through a North Shore winter, you know no ray of sun can be wasted. How can we do summer well while Covid-19 looms in the background? First of all, don’t be afraid. Fear robs us of fun and enjoyment. There is reason to be concerned, to be cautious and wise, but these practices don’t need to cascade into fear or anxiety. Choosing to not live in fear is a daily, sometimes hourly, decision. But it’s worth it. Put on bug spray, but don’t put on fear. It offers no protection. Secondly, understand how infection occurs. Most experts agree that you must be exposed to 1,000 infectious Covid-viral particles in order for infection to take hold. A single sneeze instantly releases 200,000,000 particles into the air; an exhaled breath releases 20 per minute. So, if an infected person sneezes and you take a breath of that air, you’ll reach your threshold of viral particles almost instantly. But, if you are in a room with an asymptomatic but infected person who is breathing normally, you’d have to breath their air for 50 straight minutes, inhaling all 20 viral

particles with every breath (very unlikely) before you’d have taken in enough virus to be infected. The formula is this: successful infection = (exposure to virus) (time). This explains why an indoor space, with limited air exchange and lots of people gathered for long periods, poses a greater threat. But a visit to the grocery store (few people, high air exchange, short period of time) means that the opportunity to receive an infectious dose is low. (But please remember the store clerks. Their eight-hour shift changes their infection formula and puts them at a higher risk. Be considerate and consider wearing a mask.) Thirdly, get outside. Yes, viral particles can linger, but thanks to air flow and the effects of sunlight, heat, and humidity on viral survival, your risk is minimal, especially if you avoid gathering in close groups. And lastly, get your information from reputable sources. In general, social media is a dangerous and unreliable way to stay informed of facts. Consider sourcing sites like Center for Infectious Disease Research And Policy (CIDRAP) at the U of M (cidrap.umn.edu) or the Minnesota Department of Health site (mdh.org). Summer doesn’t really care about Covid-19. Blue skies, walleye and blueberry pies are still in our future. With a few adjustments, loving concern for our neighbors and wise choices, all that summer has for us can be ours. Finally, some good news!

Northern Trails The Walleye Angler’s Arsenal By Gord Ellis

It’s been a long, weird winter, and the spring has been an especially cold one. However, late spring and early summer are peak walleye fishing time, and after all that cold weather the bite should be a good one. One of the interesting things about walleye is the incredible number of ways they can be caught: From the good old-fashioned jig and minnow, to fly fishing with streamers. Walleye can live in a lot of different situations and environments. If you have not done a lot of walleye fishing, it can be difficult to know what you need. There are so many options. Here is some of what I consider the basic tools and techniques of walleye fishing.

Jigs Nothing could be simpler, or more deadly, than a jig. These lures—just a weight and hook really—should be at the core of the walleye anglers tackle box. The Northland Fire Ball Jig is a classic, with a short hook that is the best for fishing walleye with live bait like minnows and leeches. Hook the minnow through the lips for maximum wiggle. The so-called stand-up jigs such as the Lipstick and Tip Up Jig are good with both twisters and live bait. Drop the stand up to bottom, wiggle the tip a bit, lift the rod and then let the jig drop again. Walleye often grab the jig on the drop. When using plastic baits only, round head jigs with a large hook are the best choice. For plastics, it’s tough to beat the Northland Gumball jig when fishing grubs or twisters. Have a selection of jig weights from one eighth to half an ounce. Guide approved jig co-

Devin Ellis with a monster walleye. | GORD ELLIS lours include flame red, metallic gold, yellow, neon fire tiger and pink.

Rubber/Plastics Twisters and curly tail grubs are the goto plastic for walleye. Have a selection of 3and 4-inch Mister Twister or Berkley Power Grubs on hand. Mepps Exude twisters are also excellent. Scented shads and plastic minnow baits like the Berkley Gulp minnow are very powerful and often work just as well as live bait without the mess of constantly re-baiting. Gulp and Power Crawlers are great for trolling with spinners

and you won’t have to keep changing the bait. You can use the natural colour rubber worms, or go bright pink. Some other good plastics include the Yum family of twisters and tubes.

Crankbaits I’ve caught nearly all of my largest walleye—with a couple exceptions—on crankbaits. There is just something about the wiggle and profile of crank that makes walleye crazy. I always have a selection of #5 and #7 Rapala Shad Raps (perch/silver/ fire tiger) in my walleye tackle, as these

are one of the best trolling baits ever made for walleye. The fire tiger and perch finish Shad Raps. Wally Divers and Wally Demons in the same shades as the Shad Raps are also great for trolling up nice walleye. They are also plastic, so they last a little longer than most balsa baits. For casting, the Rapala Husky Jerk is a fine choice, as is the Rapala X Rap and Smithwick Rattlin Rogue. Lipless crank baits like the Rattle Trap and Frenzy Rattler are great for covering water and catch big fish. They make a lot of noise and are especially good in dark water.

Spinners Little Joe spinners with red or silver blades, Northland Tackle single blade Rainbow spinners are a classic walleye technique. Generally, you add a minnow, leech or nightcrawler to the hook and start trolling. Spinners are a great way to cover water and find fish. For casting, it’s hard to beat a #3 Mepps Aglia. Even one-ounce white spinner baits will catch walleye when they are in the weeds or on the tops of reefs.

Live Bait Rigs Nothing is more basic for walleye than a hook, sinker and live bait. You cannot go wrong with even the most basic set up of a few split shots, a hook and worm. For most walleye anglers, the classic live bait rigging is the number one fish getter. You will need to have a selection of walking sinkers from one quarter ounce to one ounce. My favourite are the Lindy No Snagg slip sinkers. Just give them a little slack when you get snagged and they usually come right out. Bottom bouncers are basically a weight on a wire bent at a 90-degree angle. These are a great tool for trolling spinners, cranks and live bait on a hook. Have a selection of bottom bouncers from one to three ounces. You will need a selection of #4, #6 and #8 bait holder hooks, a dozen barrel swivels and some leader material such as 8-pound test Maxima fluorocarbon for leader. Tie the hook to about 2 feet of leader, then tie the leader to the arm on the bottom bouncer. Add a minnow or worm to the hook and troll it right on bottom. When you get a bite on a bottom bouncer, drop the rod tip back and then sweep forward.

Jigging Spoons An odd ball technique, but I’ve caught walleye on jigging spoons when nothing else was working. The best all-around spoon is a half-ounce silver Hopkins Smoothie. Other good jigging spoons include the Swedish Pimple, Kastmaster and Krocodile. Clip them on and drop the spoon to the bottom. Jerk the spoon hard, letting it flutter back down to the bottom. Strikes will be bone jarring. So that is a look at some of the walleye fishing tackle you can have in your arsenal. Pick out a few of these techniques and start refining your walleye game. Catch a few for supper and enjoy the finest eating fish in the north. They are always worth the effort.

Wild Traditions Bringing Food Security Back Home By Julia Prinselaar

Not long after the world as we knew it was held hostage by a global pandemic, a friend of mine made the decision to cancel her upcoming series of wild food foraging workshops in Ontario’s Ottawa Valley. In a concerned missive posted to her social media page, Sarah wrote: “I won’t be reopening Fern & Fungi this spring, not just because I can’t do in-person classes or mushroom forays due to Covid-19, but also because I personally believe a mass crisis like this is the worst time to teach people wild food foraging. There are just too many people to forage the wilds sustainably at this time, especially with the predictions that our farming supply chain may fail this year.” “Grow a big food garden,” she advises. “And grow more than you think you need.” Sarah is not alone with her worries. Interest in wild food foraging is on an upward trend, and there is tremendous ecological responsibility that comes with sharing this knowledge. Given the fragility of our globalized food systems, can the wilds feed the world? The short answer is absolutely not. There is no need for urbanites to encroach on wilderness habitat at every turn. The good news is there are many folks already leading the charge with sustainable alternatives. On a chilly afternoon in early May, I found myself sitting several feet across from my neighbor in the sheltered warmth of her greenhouse. From our socially-distant chairs, we watched snowflakes dance in the air outside, a sight that left us little choice but to laugh at our dismay over winter’s nefarious grip. Tangles of thickstalked tomato seedlings, eager to be free from their tiny pots, laid in trays at my neighbor’s feet. The unheated greenhouse (technically a cold frame) was constructed some decades ago with scrap lumber from a garage demolition in the neighborhood. It isn’t much to look at right now, but once overnight temperatures creep above lethal lows, Lucie Lavoie will place 40 tomato plants directly into the ground in a mix of composted organics and other nutrient-rich soil amendments. Organized in two rows of climbing vines, the greenhouse will yield enough tomatoes to supply Lucie and her spouse, Ken Deacon, for an entire year. 36

Since 1982, Lucie Lavoie and her spouse Ken Deacon have been growing the majority of their produce organically in their Thunder Bay backyard. They grow enough tomatoes, potatoes, peppers, drying beans, corn, asparagus, and more to last them until the following year. | SUBMITTED “We don’t buy any canned tomatoes or bottled salsas—I make all of that,” Lucie tells me. Raised in a family of lifelong gardeners, she eventually met Ken, an entomologist and expert at natural pest control. Since 1982, the horticultural duo has been growing the majority of their produce organically in their Thunder Bay backyard. “Early on I realized that you couldn’t get organic produce in town,” recalls Lucie. “And we were very committed to eating food that wasn’t sprayed with poison. That was part of it. So, we really tried to grow as much of our own food as we possibly could.”

As time went on, they also realized they could lower their ecological footprint by growing food close to home, and by eating lower on the food chain. “The amount of energy necessary to produce a kilogram of beef exceeds the number of calories that you get out of the beef. That’s not sustainable,” she explains. “My dream, when I started this whole thing, was that all of the backyards in all of the cities would be [food] gardens. And all of the front yards would be wildlife areas where you’d have food sources for wildlife, and trees and shrubs….If we grow more of our food in the place where we live, it

means that we don’t have a vast expanse of conventional agriculture that really supports nothing in terms of wildlife.” A Balsam fir and a slender birch tree border Ken and Lucie’s front yard. Decades ago, they enriched the soil and brought in woodland plant species that thrive in the shaded understory. Ostrich ferns unfurl in the spring, followed by leaves of wild ginger, bunchberry and large-leaf aster. “All of the things that we took were from areas slated for construction or development. We knew they were going to be destroyed anyway, so we transplanted them in order to create some sort of habi-

tat. And just to create a little bit of a sanctuary in the city.” Over the years, their space has expanded to stretch across three adjacent properties they’ve acquired in the Bay Algoma neighborhood. There are no fences, only narrow, mulched pathways that link a labyrinth of backyard garden beds through almost every square foot of arable land. In early spring, spinach leaves—planted the year before—are the first to sprout. As soon as the soil is workable, snap peas, lamb’s quarters and other cool-weather crops follow suit. Strawberries, ripening in July, sprawl beneath the shade of mature asparagus fronds. Raspberry canes, laden with plump, thimble-sized fruits, droop between compost heaps and a garage in one yard. After months of preparation, daily nurturing and continuous harvest, the result is an astounding level of self-sufficiency: Ken and Lucie grow enough potatoes, tomatoes, peppers, drying beans, corn, asparagus and other vegetables to last them until the following year. They do buy fruit and occasionally other produce through a bulk-buying food co-operative. For the most part, they eat what’s in season. It’s a lifestyle choice, and a lot of work. “I think people underestimate how much work it is to grow food. If they understood how much work it was, they would be, I hope, willing to pay what it’s worth,” explains Lucie. “Because it’s a real skill to grow food.” In nearly four decades of gardening together, she and Ken have tried cultivating

In nearly four decades of gardening together, Lucie and Ken have tried cultivating just about everything imaginable for their growing conditions. | SUBMITTED

just about everything imaginable for their growing conditions. They also save seed and share some of that through Superior Seed Producers, a local seed-saving collective. “We always pick the biggest, sweetest tomatoes and the most productive pea plants, and the best-sized squashes for our family and save the seeds from those. So, over the years we’ve kind of created varieties that are just right for us.”

Money Exchange

If there’s a silver lining to be found amid a global pandemic, it’s that interest in urban agriculture and local food has exploded. Lucie recently led an online gardening workshop with more than 140 attendees. Seeds are selling out from plant nurseries. The fragility of global food systems has arguably never been more apparent. “I think it’s triggered something in people where they’re realizing how far they are, how dependent they are on systems that they know very little about, and how dependent they are on things that they can do very little about, except for grow their own. Food insecurity can be circumvented by growing your own food,” offers Lucie.

She encourages new gardeners to wander around their neighborhoods and connect with more experienced growers for wisdom and inspiration. “If you see [a garden] that’s really nice, talk to the people who are growing it. It helps to build community, and you can learn so much more from someone who’s doing it out in the garden. There are less and less people growing and so there’s knowledge being lost.”

NORTHERN SKY JUNE 2020 By Deane Morrison, MN STARWATCH

T B AY ON

Venus has just left the evening sky, and now Jupiter and Saturn are moving in. By mid-month both will be up in the southeast before midnight. Jupiter, by far the brighter planet, shines west of Saturn and leads the ringed planet across the night sky.

about 30 degrees below Arcturus. Whenever Spica is up, you can find it by following the curve of the Big Dipper—always somewhere to the north—to locate Arcturus, then keeping going to find Spica. In other words, “arc to Arcturus, speed on to Spica.”

Mars doesn’t quite make it into the evening sky. But it rises earlier each day, approaching midnight from the morning side. By dawn Mars will be a fairly bright dot in the southeast. As for Venus, it reappears in the morning sky this month, but doesn’t climb out of the sun’s foreglow until late June or early July.

June’s full moon arrives at 2:12 p.m. on the 5th. It follows Scorpius and Antares, the scorpion’s bright red heart, across the night sky. Jupiter and Saturn follow the moon that night; between Jupiter and the moon is the Teapot of Sagittarius.

If you’re out at nightfall, the brilliant star Arcturus dominates the southern sky. Arcturus, the jewel of kite-shaped Bootes, the herdsman, is the brightest star in the northern hemisphere of sky. However, it’s barely brighter than Vega—the beacon to the east of Arcturus—so they can be considered co-holders of that title. Between the 28th and 29th, a waxing moon glides between Arcturus and Spica, the brightest star in Virgo, the maiden, which shines

Strange Tales The Legacy of Grand Portage’s George Morrison By Elle AndraWarner

Born in Chippewa City in 1919, George Morrison went on to become one of America’s most distinguished and renowned abstract expressionist artists with his landscape paintings, prints, drawings and wood collage sculptures. Though he never considered himself an “Indian artist” but rather an “artist who is Indian,” Morrison has been called the founder of the modern Native art. A member of the Kitchi-Onigaming / Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the third of 12 children of James and Barbara Morrison, his Indigenous name was Wah Wah The Go Nay Go Ba (“Standing in the Northern Lights”). At age six and speaking only Ojibwe, he attended the government-run boarding school in Hayward, Wisc. where he learned English. At age 10, he underwent surgery in Minneapolis to treat tuberculosis (TB) of his left hip and ended up in a body cast for almost a year during recovery; the surgery left him with a permanent gait to his walk. But it was during the year in the hospital that Morrison got his introduction to his future career as a creator and teacher through reading, crafts and art. After graduation from Grand Marais high school in 1938, Morrison attended the Minneapolis School of Arts (now Minneapolis College of Arts and Design), graduating in 1943. A scholarship provided the opportunity for him to study in New York at the Arts Students League where he became part of the abstract expressionist movement, which was transforming the city into a worldclass art centre. In 1952, after receiving a Fulbright Scholarship, Morrison studied art in Paris before returning to North America. For the next 30 years, Morrison continued to create art pieces that were featured in exhibits throughout America. He also taught in Minneapolis, Duluth, Dayton Art Institute (where he was a visiting artist in 1960); Ithaca (Cornell University); Pennsylvania; New York City; and in Providence, Rhode Island at the prestigious Rhode Island School of Design (1963-1970). In 1970, he joined the University of Minnesota where he taught art and American Indian studies until retirement in 1983. While at the Dayton Art Institute in 1960, Morrison met his wife, artist Hazel Belvo. They moved to New York where their son Briand was born in 1961. Three years later in 1963, Morrison accepted the assistant professorship at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) in Providence. 40

It was magical. All kinds of artists and painters there, like my dad’s friend Jackson Pollock. I grew up around famous people, including jazz musicians,” said Briand. “My father took his art seriously, as did the people he was friends with—tops in their field and serious about their field.” It was while Morrison taught in Providence that his 17-year-old niece Cathee Dahmen came to live with them. Before long, she was discovered by a fashion photographer, signed on with exclusive Ford modeling agency and became one of the world’s top models, appearing on the covers of fashion magazines such as Vogue and Harper’s Bazaar. MLS 6029037 - $437,900

1st ave West

Great opportunity in the downtown business district! This building is located on 1st Avenue West close to the harbor, Wisconsin Street, and Highway 61. Busy retail area year round--heavy foot traffic all summer long! A cafe, jewelry store, and t-shirt shop have all prospered at this location-what is your dream business?

CATCHLIGHT

killdeer I found a family of killdeer nesting between the beach and the campsites in the Grand Marais Rec Park. Their nests are just small areas scratched out from among the small stones. As soon as their feathers dry, the babies leave the nest. There are four babies squeezed under mom in this photo. It was starting to rain and they were looking for protection.—Paul Sundberg
