Let’s keep going forward Three weeks ago, managing editor Breana Roy said she had to leave early because she had a “costume crisis.” Breana is a dance instructor who with her sister leads a popular dance program in Grand Marais. There were issues with some costumes they ordered for the May dance recital. Breana rounded up her dancers and promptly resolved the costume crisis. The world was so different just a short time ago. We are preparing this issue in the midst of a world health crisis. The Canadian border was closed to everything but goods last week. The North Shore tourism industry has shut down. Unfortunately, many folks are still ignoring the increasingly urgent advice from health officials to stay home. At this writing, about all we know is that the situation will get worse before it improves. Do you have a question for one of our writers? Or an interesting photo, recipe, or story you’d like to share with Northern Wilds? Please send it to storyideas@northernwilds.com.
We aren’t going to tell you to head out and enjoy the Northern Wilds right now. The beauty and wonder of the North Shore and the wilderness beyond will still be there when this decidedly human crisis has passed. Instead, we’re hoping this issue delivers a little normalcy to you. Our theme for this issue is rocks and geology, so you’ll find some great
stories about everything from rock climbing to picking beach glass. Other stories cover spring whitewater paddling, a wind up of the mushing season, the discovery of Yooperlites, hot sandwiches, counting spruce grouse droppings and an update on sea lamprey control in Lake Superior. We also have a wonderful story about using boxing to combat the effects of Parkinson’s disease. As soon as this issue is out the door, we will begin beefing up our online presence. Head to northernwilds.com and sign up for our weekly email newsletter. On our website, you can also subscribe to Shawn’s Points North blog for both stories about the outdoors as well as whatever other relevant information we can provide to our Northern Wilds community on both sides of the border. We will be active on our Facebook pages Northern Wilds and Outdoor Adventures on Minnesota’s North Shore. Like the rest of you, we don’t know what the future holds, but we keep moving forward. Stay safe everyone.—Shawn Perich and Amber Pratt

Lisa’s mom and dog often walk the beach in Terrace Bay, looking for glass, too. | LISA JACQUES
Tumbled to perfection Lake Superior beach glass TERRACE BAY—The potential to find treasure on the shores of Lake Superior is but another reason to get outside and take a long walk on the beach. As the motion of the lake constantly shapes and alters the rocks beneath the water’s surface, occasionally some specialty pieces are deposited within reach. From the casual beach-goer to the enthusiastic collector, tumbled portions of glass warrant extra attention because of their unique appearance and rarity. What is essentially pretty trash, the beach glass that hunters find today has been tossed around in Lake Superior for decades or even centuries. Bottles, jars, and various types of tableware that were thrown overboard into the lake along shipping lanes or left on the shoreline in years gone by have been smoothed by the water’s movement. Waves pound the pieces into the shoreline and make them smaller and smoother, cutting off sharp edges. Hunting for unique and rare objects on the shore was often a family affair for beach glass enthusiast Lisa Jacques. She estimates that she has thousands of pieces that have been collected during a lifetime of her “pleasure and hobby.” “I have been doing this since I was a child with my grandparents,” she explains. “Also, my mom was my best partner and greatest competition. She always seemed to find blue glass—Noxzema Jars, we think—or maybe from Milk of Magnesia bottles.”

Lisa with her husband Mickey and dog Bamse. | LISA JACQUES During summers spent with her grandmother in Rossport, Ontario, Jacques learned about agates, Lake Superior greenstone and other Lake Superior rocks. They would polish their haul to make jewellery and sell it out of a little porch that she turned into a gift shop out of her home. Now based in Terrace Bay, Jacques has brought home finds from all over the North Shore of Lake Superior, from Thunder Bay to Marathon. Though every piece is inherently special, some colors inspire more awe because of how unusual they are. While white, brown, and emerald green pieces are more typical, olive green, aqua, cobalt blue, and amber are the next level of rarity. An experienced collector like Jacques has had the joy of picking even the most exceptional colors. “I love every piece I find but I definitely get excited finding red, dark blue, yellow or
White, brown and emerald green glass pieces are more common to find. | LISA JACQUES orange,” says Jacques. “Sometimes you can get combinations of colors, too.” Appearance of the beach glass also varies based on the qualities of the water and type of shoreline in which it has been submerged. Because of the pH of saltwater, glass hunters near the ocean might find that their gems have more of a frosted appearance. When glass gets stuck in between rocks on a rockier shoreline, only one edge of the piece is exposed to erosion, which results in a more triangular shape. The even tumbling of a sandy shore produces rounder pieces. Because an increase of plastic containers in the last 100 years has lessened the use of glass packaging in general, it is likely that beach glass findings might dwindle in the future. In addition, attitudes and laws regard-
ing water-based trash disposal have made it (thankfully) less common to simply toss it overboard. Although signs point to the beach glass pickings getting slimmer, Jacques still considers her searches to be beautiful walks that often yield unexpected discoveries. Despite plans to craft with her glass one day, for now she says she is “just enjoying finding it.” For aspiring collectors hoping to add variety to their respective collections, she has some words of encouragement and inspiration. “Just get out there and look down. You never know what Lake Superior has to offer up on her vast shoreline.,” she says. “It’s an incredible place where we live.” —Casey Fitchett

Cook County’s Lake Superior beaches are an agate hunters dream. With just a little digging, you might unearth a banded beauty of your own.
Beaver Bay Agate Shop The little store that rocks BEAVER BAY— If you’re headed up the North Shore for the day and interested in some unique jewelry or shiny pieces of wonderment for your mantel, there’s a place that is just for you in Beaver Bay. Keith and Teresa Bartel, owners of the Beaver Bay Agate Shop, will happily show the agates and thomsonite they have in the shop. “There’s a following for agates and we really pride ourselves on customer service,” said Teresa. “The store has always been a rock shop,” she said. Beaver Bay Agate Shop has been up and running since 1941. Originally owned by the Quinn family, Keith and Teresa purchased the shop in 2003. They specialize in Lake Superior agate, thomsonite, Mary Ellen jasper, and binghamite. The store offers agates from around the world, but Teresa likes to encourage the shop as a last resort for Lake Superior agate. “We aren’t far from the lake. We like to tell people to go look for themselves along the shore first and if they can’t find any then come back here. It’s more special when you find it yourself,” said Teresa. The shop also has chrysalis fossils, all-natural stone jewelry, and thomsonite jewels. “We have regulars and tourists both,” said Teresa of their shoppers. “We do have quite a few regulars that like to stop in and it’s nice to see that year after year we can recognize their kids and how they’ve grown.” For those who may not be familiar with agate and thomsonite, agate forms between voids of lava rock. It is usually partially transparent to translucent in color. Thomsonite is a mineral that has “eyes” and “sprays.” These are very unique and found in the Grand Marais area. Agates can be found in many places, but Lake Superior makes them plentiful in northern Minnesota. Keith started picking rocks when he was 3 or 4 years old. “His grandfather had the grandkids go out and look for him,” said Teresa. “Before you know it, the neighbor was buying up the kids’ agates for candy money.”
Alongside agates, the store also specializes in thomsonite. | SUBMITTED Today, Teresa and Keith have shared their love of rock picking for 35 years. “It takes some skill and experience,” said Teresa. “You take a nail punch and gingerly work out the rock. After years of doing this, you kind of figure out what not to do so the rock doesn’t shatter.” Teresa’s favorite rock picking find is petrified wood. “I don’t know why, I just really like finding it. One of these days I’m going to come home with a whole petrified wood log,” she said. “Keith on the other hand is partial to thomsonite.” Teresa suggested South Dakota as her favorite spot to rock pick. “There’s a lot of variety and it isn’t that far away. It’s our favorite because it’s fun and it’s a quick trip from here,” she said. “Any of the agates we’ve found, we don’t sell. Those are memories,” she said. Local fund created to aid coronavirus response DULUTH— Five Duluth-based funding organizations have come together to start a fund to help local charities on the front lines of the battle against coronavirus and the COVID-19 disease it causes. The COVID-19 Northeast Minnesota Response Fund was recently announced at a news conference in Duluth’s City Hall where the Community Foundation joined local officials in discussing the region’s response to the virus and the potentially deadly illness. “Local nonprofits face a triple threat from this public health and economic emergency,” said Holly C. Sampson, president and CEO of the Duluth Superior Area Community Foundation.

“They will see increased demand for services. They are working to maintain operations at a time of health concerns for their own staffs. And they will likely struggle to raise funds because public events and activities have been canceled. That’s why we are stepping up to help them.” Joining the Community Foundation are: the Ordean Foundation, the Northland Foundation, the Head of the Lakes United Way and the Lloyd K.

Johnson Foundation. All of the funders are based in Duluth and serve people and organizations throughout northeast Minnesota. Many of the same organizations came together in 2012 to create emergency response funds after devastating flash flooding did millions of dollars in damage throughout the region. Sampson said the Community Foundation also is exploring working with some of the partners and other funders whose service regions cover northwest Wisconsin to establish a COVID-19 fund for that area. In addition, other funds may be created for specific Northland communities, she said. “Our goal is to come together and help local nonprofits who already are being asked to help and will be asked to do more as health and economic concerns grow,” said Tony Sertich, president of the Northland Foundation. Don Ness, executive director of the Ordean Foundation, said: “Duluth is a generous and caring community. Today we once again heed the call to help those in need. The burden of this crisis has fallen most heavily on vulnerable populations and the nonprofits who are on the front lines. We ask those who
are able to be especially generous in the face of such great need. Direct support of local nonprofits and contributions to this purpose-focused fund will once again prove that, in times of need, Duluthians step up to the challenge.” Matt Hunter, president of the Head of the Lakes United Way said: “Already we are seeing how COVID-19 is impacting our community. Businesses are shutting their doors to protect public health, and people are losing income. We want to support the safety net that will support these individuals and their families at a time of need and uncertainty.” Joan Gardner-Goodno, executive director of the Lloyd K. Johnson Foundation, said: “These are trying times for all of us, but especially those directly affected by COVID-19. Donating to this fund is one way all of us can make a difference for our neighbors and our community.” Donors can give online and get more information on the Community Foundation’s website. They also can call (218) 726-0232 or email: info@ dsacommunityfoundation.com. All donations to the fund are tax deductible.
Aerial survey shows moose population is stable ST. PAUL— For the ninth year in a row, Minnesota’s moose population remains relatively stable, but reproductive success—one of the factors that has the greatest impact on moose survival over time—remains low. This winter, the DNR estimated the moose population to be 3,150 animals (between a range of 2,400 and 4,320). Due to the variance in this type of annual population estimate, this year’s estimate does not suggest a decline from last year’s estimate of 4,180 moose. The survey provides an estimate rather than documenting the precise number of moose because biologists cannot see or count every moose across the 6,000-square mile survey area. They survey a portion of the moose range every year to generate the estimate. While the recent population stability is good news, DNR researchers point out that Minnesota moose remain at risk over the long term. The moose population has declined from an estimated 8,840 animals in 2006.

Low reproductive success and continued deaths from brainworm and other diseases make it difficult for Minnesota’s moose population to recover. Both the Fond du Lac Band of Lake Superior Chippewa and the 1854 Treaty Authority contributed funding and personnel for the annual survey. The survey is available on the DNR’s moose management page online.

It’s a crappy job Scientists monitor Minnesota’s spruce grouse NORTH SHORE— A dedicated group of citizen scientists will again assist professional wildlife biologists this spring to gauge how many spruce grouse inhabit the forests of northern Minnesota. Spruce grouse (Falcipennis canadensis) inhabit coniferous forests across northern North America and are at the southern edge of their range in the northern Great Lakes states. Biologists are trying to establish a population index so they can be aware of any population changes over time. “Prior to the survey, we didn’t have any data to know if they were stable, declining or increasing,” said Charlotte Roy, grouse project leader with the Minnesota DNR. This will be the third year of the annual survey. Biologists from the Minnesota DNR, Grand Portage Band of Lake Superior Chippewa, Leech Lake Band of Ojibwe, Red Lake Band of Chippewa and 1854 Treaty Authority, along with representatives from the Superior and Chippewa national forests, Vermilion Community College and volunteer citizen scientists conduct the survey. All across spruce grouse range in northern Minnesota, participants are assigned about 10 waypoints each. Participants walk a 100-meter radius around each waypoint and count the occurrence of spruce grouse droppings they find within 1 meter of their path. Sometimes pellets are found singly; other times in piles. The number of single pellets and “roost” piles are both recorded.
A spruce grouse perched in a tamarack tree. | JOE SHEAD Instructional handouts and a mandatory training session teach participants how to distinguish spruce grouse droppings from those of ruffed grouse. In general, spruce grouse droppings are green and are longer and narrower than ruffed grouse droppings. Although spruce grouse eat insects, mushrooms and berries in summer, their winter diet is made up entirely of conifer needles, which contributes to their coloration. Ruffed grouse pellets tend to be brown and often have a whitewashed look—a result of uric acid. “We find them most commonly in black spruce and jack pine stands,” Roy said, noting that the birds also utilize balsam fir, red pine, white spruce, tamarack and white cedar. In addition to the number of spruce grouse pellets, the type of tree cover, presence or lack of snow and a supplemental snowshoe hare pellet count are also noted on data sheets. Finding droppings is easy in principle. After all, you just walk along a circle, looking at the ground. But in practice, it can be tricky. First off, the surveys are conducted as the snow recedes when only a few inches of snow remain. The idea is that the droppings are easier to see against the white backdrop and by searching when the snow is almost gone, you can see an entire winter’s worth of droppings. To make matters more difficult, the thick conifers that spruce grouse dwell in form an almost impenetrable barrier of branches that participants must

navigate, climbing over fallen trees and ducking under branches as dead needles cascade down their backs. Sometimes just walking is hard enough, but all the while, participants have to keep their eyes peeled for droppings, which are generally 1.5 inches long or less. Minnesota is unique among the Great Lakes states in that spruce grouse hunting is allowed. Spruce grouse are classified as “threatened” in Wisconsin and as a “species of special concern” in Michigan. Minnesota hunters kill a few thousand spruce grouse each year, compared to hundreds of thousands of ruffed grouse. However, Roy cautions that harvest estimates derived from hunter surveys are probably not accurate representations of the actual spruce grouse population. “We do think that the number of spruce grouse harvested is more related to the number of ruffed grouse hunters than the amount of spruce grouse that are on the land,” she said. Ruffed grouse numbers are cyclical and hunting pressure often matches ruffed grouse numbers. Most spruce grouse are likely taken incidentally by hunters targeting ruffed grouse, and ups and downs in spruce grouse harvest can probably be linked to patterns in hunting pressure. Hopefully, this survey should shed some light on how many spruce grouse live in Minnesota.— Joe Shead

With a mouth like a rasp file, sea lamprey attach to fish in Lake Superior to feed, literally sucking the life out of the host fish. | USFWS
Sea lamprey remain the scourge of Lake Superior By Shawn Perich
The completion of the St. Lawrence Seaway in the mid20th Century forever changed the Great Lakes. The locks and canals allowed ocean-going ships to reach ports in the grainrich Upper Midwest. The Seaway also opened up the Great Lakes ecosystem to aquatic invaders. Enter the sea lamprey. The marine fish has a mouth like a rasp file, which it uses to attach to other fish species and then feed on them. Within the ocean environment where it evolved, the sea lamprey is simply part of the ecosystem. In the Great Lakes, it became an out-of-control monster. Soft-skinned fish such as the native lake trout were especially vulnerable to sea lamprey predation. The parasitic sea lampreys literally sucked the life out of them, leading to the collapse of lake trout populations throughout the Great Lakes.

Fortunately, lake trout were not completely eliminated in Lake Superior, as they were in the other lakes. In 1958, the U.S. and Canadian governments began there with a herculean effort to control sea lampreys and begin lake trout recovery. A chemical “lampricide” was developed to kill lamprey in the streams where they spawned. Initially, biologists
thought they could eradicate lampreys in Superior first and then work their way down through the lakes. The sea lamprey proved far too resilient. Although they couldn’t be eradicated, lamprey could be controlled—with perpetual effort. Today that effort includes chemical treatments, spawning stream barriers and trapping during spawning runs. Shawn Nowicki, unit supervisor of sea lamprey control for the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service is based in Marquette, Mich. and responsible for the U.S. portion of Lake Superior. In a recent interview, she said that the swift, rocky streams along Minnesota’s North Shore are not significant producers of lampreys, because they lack appropriate habitat. Lamprey spawn in gravel substrate. When the young, known as larva, hatch, they seek sand, silt and detritus to burrow into. They live there for up to 10 years before emerging as parasitic juveniles. The juveniles attach to fish and may feed for more than a year before detaching and seeking out a place to spawn. In the cold waters of Superior, sea lamprey most often spawn in late spring, although they’re occasionally observed in some Minnesota streams from May to September. Just ask Mike Hero of Grand Marais. Last July, while filming a fly-casting video for a course he teaches at the North House Folk School, he discovered spawning lampreys in the Brule River at Judge C.R. Magney State Park. “There were big, squirming balls of them,” Hero said. “I could have scooped them up with a net.” Unsure of the legality of doing so, he instead reported his discovery to the Minnesota DNR. From DNR staff he learned that because Minnesota North Shore streams are not considered significant lamprey producers, they are monitored and treated less frequently by USFWS crews. Their efforts focus on the South Shore, where many tributaries have an
abundance of lamprey spawning habitat, sometimes miles of it. In Wisconsin’s Bad River, for instance, USFWS crews may trap anywhere from hundreds to thousands of adult lampreys during the spawning run.
agers collect “marking rates” on lake trout from state, tribal and provincial fisheries agency around the lake to monitor lamprey predation. While lake trout are used as the indicator species, sea lamprey feed on many fish, from salmon and whitefish to large lake sturgeon and burbot.
Since the USFWS prioritized treatments where they can achieve the best results, Hero wondered if Minnesota anglers could catch and remove lampreys they happened upon while fishing. He is working with the DNR to get a permit so that he and other volunteers can remove and/or report sea lampreys in North Shore streams.
Sea lamprey control has allowed Superior fisheries to recover and flourish in spite of their predation. Biologists warn that if treatment were to stop, sea lamprey populations would quickly rebound. Control efforts were reduced in the 1990s and lamprey numbers increased. When lamprey treatments were stepped up, it took several years to knock down lamprey numbers.
Hero’s lamprey sighting last year spurred the USFWS to investigate the Brule. Nowicki said the river was treated in 2019. The USFWS plans to survey the river this year. The crew will electrofish portions of the river where they can wade. In deeper water near the river mouth and in the lake in front of the river, they will use johnboats to spray granular Bayluscide, a chemical (also used for deworming) that forces lamprey to the surface where they can be collected. The purpose of the survey is to find any lamprey that may have survived last year’s treatment and set up areas for retreatment. She said it was unlikely they’ll find any lampreys, because the treatment went well last year.
Nowicki said that while the North Shore doesn’t produce significant numbers of sea lamprey, one Minnesota waterway does concern her. Currently, the contaminated bottom sediments of the St. Louis River at Duluth are not conducive to spawning lampreys, but that will change as ongoing restoration work rehabilitates the ecosystem. Crews have found a small population of larva just below the Fond du Lac Dam, which is the upstream barrier for fish migrating from Lake Superior. As the river cleans up downstream from the dam, lampreys may gain new spawning habitat.
Sea lampreys don’t respect international boundaries. Canada’s Department of Fisheries and Oceans is responsible for surveys and treatment north of the border, where many tributaries host sea lamprey spawning runs. Nowicki says lamprey control is “a border blind program.”
Call it ecological irony.
“We talk daily,” she says of her Canadian counterparts. “Especially during the field season.”
Follow outdoor writer Shawn Perich as he reports on conservation issues and explores the North Shore wilderness with his dog Rainy.
U.S. and Canadian crews also work together on shared waterways like the massive St. Mary’s River, the outlet to Lake Superior. “We assist one another on treatment as needed,” Nowicki said. In spite of controls that keep their abundance in check, sea lampreys remain the scourge of Superior. Nowicki said the abundance of adult sea lamprey fluctuates wildly. However, in the last five years adults have increased and are now above target. The damage wrought by sea lampreys can be measured by the round scars left on fish they’ve preyed upon. outdoor climb creates the most safe and positive experience.
Outdoor Skills and Thrills There is no doubt that rock climbing is a challenging activity. But while it can seem intimidating for people who have never done it before, there are plenty of resources to help those who want to get started climbing but do not know how. One of those is Outdoor Skills and Thrills in Thunder Bay. Started in 2014 by Aric Fishman, Outdoor Skills and Thrills offers challenging adventures for skilled climbers as well as guided climbs for beginners, and regardless of skill level, offers everyone the opportunity to get outdoors and enjoy the pristine scenery that the region has to offer. “I love showing people the joy of climbing and the beauty of this region,” Fishman said. The most popular course at Outdoor Skills and Thrills is the public beginner’s outings, which occur on a weekly basis and cover the basics with a trained guide. Since climbing is an inherently risky activity, choosing a guided service for one’s first 10

“For beginners, if there’s an interest I think you should totally try it,” Fishman said. “While indoor and outdoor rock climbing carry the same risks safety-wise, outside can seem scarier because you feel more exposed. But we consider it challenge by choice, and take a step-by-step, no-rush approach.” Fishman said for your first time climbing it’s important to not focus too much on reaching the top but instead to enjoy the experience and reward that comes with trying something new. “The benefits of rock climbing are endless: you’re outside, you’re working out, you’re focusing and analyzing decisions. You also form connections with the people you climb with, as you’re literally holding each other’s lives in your hands. There’s something unique about that,” Fishman said. Fishman is also the author of Thunder Bay Climbing, a book that details the best climbing locations in the area. More information about Outdoor Skills and Thrills and Fish-

Duluth Climbers Coalition Down the shore in Duluth, the Duluth Climbers Coalition (DCC) seeks to protect rock climbing areas in Duluth and provide climbing access to people of all ages and experience levels. On the board of the DCC is Dave Pagel, a climber with many years of North Shore rock climbing experience. “I moved to Duluth in 1978 and specifically chose this area because of its proximity to climbing on the North Shore,” Pagel said. “I fell in with a local climbers group, and we did a lot of development throughout the ‘80s and ‘90s to make climbing on the North Shore what it is today.” While nowadays one can find plenty of guides to North Shore climbing, when Pagel first started there wasn’t much information available. (He even remembers orienteering
through the woods to climbs that are now well documented and accessible by trails.) But as the climbing group convened at the university, members began the years-long task of identifying, naming, and cleaning up climbing areas so that locals and visitors alike had a better idea of where to go and how to access climbs. They even published a guidebook in the early ‘80s to climbing on the North Shore. Now, Pagel works with the DCC within the Duluth area, and is helping the next generation gain access to climbing. The DCC has been around for five years, and has done excellent work preserving climbing areas and partnering with local nonprofits to expand access to people who might not have access to climbing otherwise. “The goal was to make climbing a legitimate option in the city,” Pagel said. “We had several climbing areas but they were off the radar and it wasn’t clear who owned them. The DCC came about to partner with the city and preserve those areas.” One of the ways the DCC promotes access to climbing is through partnering with
During the summers, Markall and the staff at Boulder Bear lead a fairly intensive summer camp program where students can sign up for a week of outdoor climbing interspersed with classic camp activities, such as soccer and time at the beach. “Campers visit a minimum of three outdoor climbing areas during camp with guides that are certified by the Association of Canadian Mountain Guides,” said Markall. KARINA KROSBAKKEN VertiGals
Also in Duluth is the North Shore VertiGals, an inclusive climbing community for women, transgender and gender non-conforming people of all skill levels to come together and explore their shared passion for climbing. The group was started two years ago by Molly Wick and Erin Hammes, and now has regular activities including climb nights, outdoor climbing adventures, and yoga for climbers. Karina Krosbakken oversees the social media communication for VertiGals and also serves as a liaison for the DCC. Her love for climbing dates back to childhood trips to Devil’s Tower, and she has experi-
ence climbing all along the North Shore. She said Wick and Hammes started VertiGals after noticing a lack of women in the gym and few women mentors. With VertiGals, they hoped that more women could get involved and experience the amazing climbing opportunities that the North Shore has to offer. “Most of the people who get involved with the group start with a climb night,” Krosbakken said. “Those are open to people who are advanced and those who have never climbed before, and we’ve had all ages from kids to seniors show up.” From there, those that decide to join VertiGals get access to a Facebook group where members can stay connected and invite each other to impromptu and unofficial climbing outings. VertiGals also has three outdoor climbing adventures that are tentatively planned for this summer: an outing to Shovel Point, the Silver Creek tunnel, and Ely’s Peak. “We have a very unique setup for climbing on the North Shore, with lots of accessible climbs that you can drive right up to,” Krosbakken said. “Climbs like Shovel Point are beautiful because you’re above the water, but it can be intimidating because you have to get lowered down to the lake and then get yourself back up. But there’s a great sense of pride and joy when you get back to the top.” To learn more about VertiGals, visit: northshorevertigals.wordpress.com.

Pagel said that while West Duluth has great natural features and recreation opportunities, many of the local youths don’t have the means to access to them. But through grants, donations, and partnering with local organizations, the DCC has brought the opportunity to climb to many local youths. “We ran a program for middle schoolers and thought that maybe a dozen kids would be interested, but over 80 signed up! It’s really an unmet need,” Pagel said. “The students are so enthusiastic and it was awesome to see them out there.” To learn more about the Duluth Climbers Coalition, visit: duluthclimbers.org.
DALLAS MARKALL Boulder Bear Climbing Centre
Dallas Markall is the owner of the Boulder Bear Climbing Centre in Thunder Bay. With both indoor and outdoor climbing opportunities, Boulder Bear helps people of all ages and experience levels find a climbing experience that works well for them. When he’s not leading climbs or summer
camps, Markall works to create and maintain climbing areas throughout Northern Ontario. “I started climbing at 18, and did most of my original climbing around the Thunder Bay area,” Markall said. His experience with developing climbing areas began when he moved to Dryden when he accepted a position as a police officer, and found that there was no developed climbing in the area. He got connected with two local climbers, and as someone who is passionate about both climbing and the outdoors, he began the work of putting up several climbing routes, including at Banana Lake and in Blue Lake Provincial Park. The work of developing an outdoor climbing area depends on the kind of climb being created. Markall said the bulk of his work has been single pitch climbs, where climbers can go up and down on the same length of rope. He starts with finding a place that is climbable, has natural protection, and is also aesthetically pleasing. When needed, he installs bolts which are drilled in to create a path and are left for future climbers to use. “I’ve done a lot of bolting,” Markall said. “It’s an expense that comes out of pocket, but we have a few dedicated souls who are happy to do it so others can enjoy these climbs.”

spring runoff on these rivers. Rapids consistently range between Class IV and V, meaning experienced paddlers are the only ones who should pursue these seasonal runs, Pfeifer said.
It’s not the run of steelhead or the call of a canoe trip to the Boundary Waters that grips his attention. Each spring when the ice and snow melt away on the many rivers and lakes feeding into Lake Superior, Pfeifer prepares for his favorite means of outdoor recreation on the North Shore: whitewater kayaking.
“These rivers and creeks are narrow and fast,” he says. “They can be dangerous.”
“It’s the best,” he says. Whitewater kayaking is far from a new concept on the many rivers that spill into Lake Superior between Duluth and Thunder Bay. Paddlers have been braving these waters for many decades, each spring focusing their attention on the many gurgling, frothy and root-beer colored rapids common across the region. And while there’s no shortage of water, Pfeifer says when it comes to participation, there are only so many qualified or even interested paddlers who come to be a part of the
Pfeifer is the co-owner of Swiftwater Adventures based in Carlton, Minn. The company is willing to teach people how to kayak, though only in a controlled environment or a body of water with minimal rapids, at least for beginners. Most of Swiftwaters trips focus on rafting adventures in northern Minnesota, including the popular St. Louis River. When it comes to kayaking on the North Shore, however, Pfeifer is more than willing to set down his guiding hat and put on his paddling helmet. “People get hooked on this, absolutely,” he says of kayaking whitewater rapids and high-water runoffs. Much like steelhead fishing, there is a short window where running these

rivers in a kayak is at its peak, or, perhaps, even an option. Later in the season, for example, some of the flows are too low and slow to float with any type of consistency. Depending on snowpack and spring temperatures, the average season for peak whitewater can last anywhere from a few weeks to more than a month. This happens most often in the spring, though occasionally heavy autumn rains will allow for paddling opportunities. The heavy snowfall in 2020 throughout most of the Northern Wilds means this spring could be especially ripe for a tremendous season, Pfeifer said. As with all things wild and untamed, factors beyond human control shape the quality and length of spring runoff on rivers such as the Lester, Baptism and Cascade. “Those are all good spots and popular spots within this small community of paddlers,” Pfeifer says. It takes an advanced skill level to safely run these Lake-Superior-bound

Only dedicated paddlers descend on the area each year. However, it’s the numbers game that also makes this community close knit. Each spring, paddlers connect to run these rapids, some traveling from the Twin Cities, others from much farther. Camps are shared, most often on beaches near Silver Bay or Duluth. The day’s river runs are rehashed through vivid campfire storytelling. Plans are formed for the next day. Friendships are made. Among those who feel the seasonal tug to make it to northeastern Minnesota each spring is Chris Baer, a wellknown and highly respected member of the kayaking scene in North America. Pfeifer says when other paddlers, particularly those just getting into the sport, see someone of Baer’s stature
in the paddling community getting a thrill from the rivers on the North Shore, it solidifies the validity of the kayaking scene here. Though paddling ‘celebrities’ such as Baer are a positive sign for the future of the North Shore whitewater kayaking culture, Pfeifer points out that, at least for now, the scene is mostly male dominated. “Some of the best and most skilled paddlers in the world are women,” Pfeifer says. “I think one thing we’ll be seeing soon are more women getting in on what’s happening on these rivers near Duluth and up and down the shore.”
region than it is by kayakers. Pfeifer— who says new paddlers show up on an almost annual basis to the North Shore to test the waters—has been a whitewater kayaker for about a decade, spending two of those years in the Pacific Northwest kayaking some of the most recognized whitewater in the country. He says the whitewater on rivers near Lake Superior are not as well-known as are other spots in the country, including Colorado, California and some select pockets on the East Coast, namely in North Carolina. Many of the rivers flowing into Lake Superior would be considered creeks out West because they are so narrow and the comparatively low volume of water they carry. All the same, Pfeifer says he is a grateful participant in the North Shore paddling scene, particularly because it’s in his home state. “I grew up on a lake in northern Minnesota,” Pfeifer says. “The water and wilderness have been an integral part of my life since I was young.” The waterways between Duluth and the Ontario border that drop toward Lake Superior slice and drop through rugged country at a rapid pace. Because of this sharp descent, most of the paddling opportunities on North Shore rivers range between two to five miles before they end at or near Lake Superior. These stretches of water are short runs by industry standards, though what they lack in distance is more than made up for with absolute intensity. “This is world-class whitewater we have here in Minnesota,” Pfeifer says. “It’s another of our hidden gems.”
As it is, each spring the North Shore is much more heavily populated by steelhead anglers and sightseers looking to view the many waterfalls in the NORTHERN WILDS

the GMAC with 4,200 square feet of additional work space at a more visible, heavily visited location. Once renovations are finished this April, Studio 21 will be utilized as the Art Colony’s “public space,” serving as an alternative or complement to the GMAC’s current location two blocks up the hill from the main thoroughfare of Highway 61. The GMAC plans to host exhibitions, offer additional classes, and rent out a semi-public studio space called The Pillbox to local artists at the new location.“Purchasing [Studio 21] has increased our work space by 60 percent,” says Brown. “It gives us a public building that can be used for exhibitions so that our other location, Founder’s Hall, can be more private, used for classes and artists at work.” “How things are set up now,” continues Brown, “we have foot traffic with people coming in to check out the Art Colony which leads to interruptions in classes and to the artists that utilize our spaces. Given its great location, Studio 21 will not only get more foot traffic and allow us to connect with more people, but it will allow us to ensure classes and events at Founders Hall maintain flow without distractions.” Studio 21 will be joining other creative businesses as the newest addition to what local artist Betsy Bowen describes as the “First Avenue Creative Corridor,” a reputation that the GMAC is hoping will continue to grow as the area develops. The plan is to set up Studio 21 with a reception desk near the entrance to welcome visitors to what Brown imagines will be a “Communal Space” that it is part interactive, part informative, part exhibition. “We want to support people here in the community who are working in the arts,” says Brown. “If all goes to plan, we will have rotating exhibits in the new space that will allow artists to show off what they do.”

Former Pharmacy becomes Studio 21 CREATIVE SPACE: By Eric Weicht The Grand Marais Art Colony is expanding. The GMAC, the longest-lived art colony in Minnesota, acquired the former North Shore Pharmacy building in downtown Grand Marais last summer and is in the process of renovating the location into a series of new work spaces. The GMAC has a long-standing tradition of growth and community development. What began in 1947 as a simple summer refuge for artists seeking to study in an inspiring natural setting, has grown over the past 73 years into an organization that currently serves more than 25,000 people every year. The GMAC’s purchase and renovation of the former North Shore Pharmacy building is but another step along this well-established growth trajectory.
“The word I use to describe the acquisition is ‘proportional expansion’,” says Lyla Brown, executive director at the GMAC. “It’s not like we are taking on something that we can’t manage, rather it’s an expansion that is proportional to our needs.” Prior to purchasing the North Shore Pharmacy building, the GMAC had been exploring options to expand for a number of years in order to meet its growing need for additional workspace. “Programming under Ruth Pszwaro’s [artistic director] leadership has grown by 400 percent over the past five years,” says Brown, “and because of this we have simply outgrown our current buildings.” According to Brown, the GMAC board
had been discussing whether to buy land and do a new build or purchase an existing building when the North Shore Pharmacy building came onto the market. “Commercial buildings rarely come onto the market in Grand Marais,” says Brown, “so when we saw that this building was for sale, right on First Ave, we jumped at the opportunity.” Inspired by its location at 21 W Hwy 61, the GMAC has decided to call this new workspace Studio 21. Studio 21 will help the GMAC carry out its mission of providing services to artists, promoting art education, and nurturing art within the community through an environment of creative excellence by providing
“One of the ideas that our board has,” continues Brown, “is to host a holiday exhibition each year where local artists could sell their work and connect with the public. That’s not been confirmed, though, it’s just one of many ideas that we are considering.” In addition to rotating exhibits and additional art classes, Studio 21 will also have studio space available for rent known as the The Pillbox. Located towards the back of the building in what was formerly the pill counting area of the pharmacy, artists will be able to rent The Pillbox to use as a private work space. The Pillbox is separated from the main area by a wall, though a window with a shade for privacy that has been installed to allow visitors the opportunity to watch “art in action” should the artist choose to do so. The Pillbox will first be available to local artists, but if no local artist expresses interest in the space than it will be made available to artists from outside Cook County. “Ultimately,” says Brown, “the goal of Studio 21 is to provide an opportunity for people to see and engage with art and not be intimidated, and by making [the Art Colony] more readily available to the public, Studio 21 is a big step in the right direction.” For further information on the GMAC and its plans for Studio 21, visit their website at: grandmaraisartcolony.org. Jim McGowan has been playing solo shows up and down the shoreline of Superior for about 12 years. | SUBMITTED When Jim McGowan takes the stage at one of the North Shore’s many venues, a lively time is not far behind. The guitarist has been playing solo shows up and down the shoreline of Superior for about 12 years, and is excited that he now resides in an area with a musical community he can shine in.

His arrival to the scene was serendipitous. Years ago, he and his wife Maren traveled to Cook County and ran into longtime local musician Joe Paulik, who let McGowan take the stage at Cascade Lodge. “I ended up talking to him afterwards and told him about this new guitar I just got. I brought it in and he said ‘Why don’t you play a couple?’, so I did,” says McGowan. “The owners of the lodge were there and the next thing you know I had a gig lined up. Since then I’ve been pretty intentional about trying to fold into the music scene here, also with an eye towards living here.” That dream would become a reality in 2017 when he and his wife moved to Hovland, east of Grand Marais, and McGowan was able to start his music career anew. He said he hadn’t played much in adulthood, but was highly musical in his youth. “I learned how to play guitar by taking the needle on the record player and

going back and forth and trying different licks and totally destroying the record,” says McGowan. “It led to some really great experiences for me as a high school and college student. I had a job in Colorado at a camp for two summers, and my main job was to play guitar for the campfires up in the Rocky Mountains at the height of John Denver’s Rocky Mountain High years. It was like a teen boy’s dream job!” McGowan describes his sound as “Americana folk,” spanning popular songs to Appalachian and Irish tunes, which has become more prominent in his sets as he’s gained a residency at the Dubliner Pub in St. Paul. “A lot of American folk music kind of draws from those traditions,” he says. “A lot of the influences that I have are people like Gordon Lightfoot and James Taylor. I don’t do a lot of original music but that’s kind of what’s up next. Pushing myself to try to have a few original songs.” McGowan says that when it comes to original songs he’s his own worst critic, but so far his originals have been received very well. “I recently wrote a song called ‘Whatever Happened’. I usually don’t describe it too much—I love that people cannot draw their own conclusions about what
it’s about. But it’s about keeping promises and correcting a bad situation. So, it has a lot of maybe political undertones.” He believes songs like that are what we need now more than ever. “One thing that kind of disturbs me is that it seems like we don’t have enough of that kind of music responding to some of today’s challenges,” says McGowan. “If you think of the 60s and the civil rights movement and the Vietnam War, there was a lot of music that actually spoke to that. I would love to be a part of getting more of that kind of voice out there.” When he’s not strumming in local establishments, McGowan works as a senior manager of state advocacy for the YMCA, which has him traveling between 17 states on the regular. So, it’s always a relief when he can center himself around music along the shore. “It’s one of the biggest sources of joy in my life. I’m still at a point where I have to keep my day job, and right now that requires that I stay close to an airport. But it’s the live performing that really grounds me in some respects, I know for sure my day job supports my music habit.”

The North Shore Dish A Selection of Hot Sandwiches By Chuck Viren
John Montagu, the 4th Earl of Sandwich, loved to gamble. One day he was on a hot streak and instructed a cook to prepare him something that would not interfere with his gambling. To his delight, he was presented with sliced meat between two pieces of bread, and the sandwich was born. It was some time before the sandwich became of staple of lunch boxes. Sandwiches also became a popular item at restaurants, where of course innovation was inevitable. As I began to develop my palate, I learned that sandwiches can provide a lot of information about what to expect from a restaurant. And besides, they make for great comfort food. The three restaurants featured in this article are very different from one another, and all have their own take on the sandwiches they offer. The Bean Fiend Café and Sandwich Bar in Thunder Bay is a coffee café, McQuade’s Pub in Two Harbors offers fine dining in a casual atmosphere, and South of the Border Café in Grand Marais is primarily known as a purveyor of hearty breakfasts. Brian Hamilton, who at the time owned Red Earth Imports, became interested in coffee and in 2010 opened The Bean Fiend featuring Oso Negro coffee from Nelson, British Columbia. Over time it morphed into a café, and in keeping with his values, utilized responsibly-sourced ingredients and house-made dressings, sauces, soups and baked goods. Front and center on their menu are grilled sandwiches. According to manager and cook Lori Bociurko, they work hard to source ingredients locally whenever possible. They offer vegetarian, vegan and gluten-free options for their sandwiches, as well as sandwiches with chicken, turkey and egg. One of their more popular sandwiches is their chicken and brie. It features, in addition to creamy brie, spinach, apricot jam and their house-made garlic aioli. Another popular sandwich is the turkey pesto. Their house-made pesto is created from basil, asiago cheese, and garlic—they do not include pine nuts. This sandwich also contains their garlic aioli, mozzarella cheese, turkey, and is served grilled on ciabatta bread. For those who prefer a bit more heat, their Diablo sandwich combines capicola, genoa, dill Havarti, banana peppers, and their red pepper aioli on rye bread. Grilled cheese lovers may wish to check out their Cheese Encounter 18

Their iced teas are made in-house, and they offer a full range of coffee, as well as Silk Road teas. Frank McQuade has spent his adult life sharpening his culinary skills. In 2016 he returned to his hometown of Two Harbors and opened McQuade’s Herbs, Spices and More. Then in 2018 he got back into the restaurant business by creating McQuade’s Pub and Grill, where their motto is, “fine dining and cocktails with a casual atmosphere.” His vision was to open a restaurant with great consistent food of a high quality. They source their food locally whenever possible. Their diverse and innovative menu features entrees such as pan-seared duck, pork belly with caramelized garlic risotto cake, and a limited but intriguing selection of pasta dishes. They have also been offering seafood specials including jumbo scallops, shrimp, fresh oysters, octopus, and have even featured alligator. As for sandwiches, their selection is limited, but true to their motto; the quality is high. They have a delicious Banh Mi sandwich with house-roasted pork. The sand-

Appreciating Our Volunteers By Nancy Frischmann, RSVP Program Coordinator, AEOA April is typically the month in which we celebrate and recognize the enormous contribution that volunteers make to our local communities. We celebrate through volunteer fairs, luncheons, and the annual National Volunteer Appreciation week, which runs from April 19-25. Local businesses, restaurants and organizations have thanked volunteers through discounts, gifts and special offers. Unfortunately, this year, our celebrations will have to be postponed, in order to keep our community members and volunteers safe from the spread of Covid-19. It is almost impossible to quantify the value of volunteer contributions and efforts in Northeast Minnesota. As program coordinator for Northland Volunteer Center and RSVP (Retired and Senior Volunteer Program) through AEOA, for Lake and Cook Counties, I work with over 40 nonprofits that rely on volunteers to deliver services, provide opportunities and celebrate our wonderful heritage and resources.
Non-profits including food shelves, Meals on Wheels, Ruby’s Pantry, senior service organizations, care centers, education, nature centers, state parks, radio stations, art centers, folk schools, libraries, Veteran’s Home, exercise classes, local festivals, quilting groups and more are dependent on our volunteer base to keep our area vibrant, welcoming and livable for residents. According to the hours we track through RSVP and Northland, volunteers contributed over 36,700 hours in 2019. The value of each volunteer hour is estimated by the Independent Sector to be $25.43; thus, volunteers contributed over $930,000 of time, talent and caring to vital non-profit organizations. And the amazing fact is that this represents only a portion of all volunteer effort in this area. The economic value is undeniable. NORTHERN WILDS
“I’m not Dying, I’m Just Shaking a Lot!” By Peter Fergus-Moore “OK, gloves on!” The trainer calls over a soundtrack of ‘80s rock. The participants in the airy gym sit where they can, slip on hand protectors, then colourful boxing gloves. Wearing sweats with navy T-shirts reading “Boxer” on the back, they stand in loose rows with plenty of space between them, adopting the traditional boxing stance. None will touch another. Their opponent is not human, but rather the ravaging effects of Parkinson’s disease (PD). A neurological condition brought on by the brain’s inability to manufacture dopamine, a hormone and neurotransmitter, PD tends to strike in middle age, though people as young as 30 might experience it. The condition has a range of symptoms and severity, but most people know it as a noticeable muscle tremor. “I was diagnosed about five years ago. I started shaking a great deal,” says former nurse Jackie Carroll, one of the boxers. “I couldn’t take blood samples or administer needles any longer.” “I worked in admin,” says Mary L. “My handwriting got smaller and smaller—now it’s illegible.” Now, Mary L. and Carroll and some 20 other people with Parkinson’s congregate three times a week at the Sweatclub Gym in Thunder Bay to exercise under the direction of gym owner Jacquie Kennedy. “Now, punch! Punch! Left! Right! Keep it up! Again!” she calls over the music, as the boxers thrust their fists forward in emulation of professional ring fighters. Soon, she changes up the routine to incorporate forward, backward and sideways shuffles along with the punching. While boxing is an important feature of the Rock Steady Boxing regimen, stretches, modified aerobic exercises and weight training are just as important. “There’s no cure for PD, but exercise is a really good way to manage the symptoms,” Kennedy adds. “I am just so proud of these fighters.” One of PD’s most insidious effects is the curtailing of movement that most of us take for granted. With PD, you might not swing your arms, your muscles might stiffen, making for an awkward gait; your muscle coordination becomes spotty. And, of course, the tremors. “It strikes everybody differently,” says Jed Ruberto. “I take dopamine four times a day. Otherwise, I shake so much, I can’t even write my name with a pen.” Both Ruberto and Carroll are open about their condition, though this raises another, often painful aspect of PD: the social stigma. For this reason, some of the Rock Steady participants are protected by non-disclosure agreements and prefer to have their identities remain a secret. “I was shopping one time and shaking a lot, when this man comes up to me and
says, ‘You need a drink, dear?’” Carroll relates. She quickly set the man straight and received an apology, but she well remembers how furious she felt about his judgment. For his part, Ruberto welcomes more publicity about the condition. “With stories like this, I won’t have to keep explaining to people why I’m this way,” he says. Actually, it was the onset of Carroll’s condition that started the entire operation. “I found this Rock Steady Boxing outfit in Indianapolis and got my certification as a trainer,” Kennedy says. “Then we started it up here about three years ago, and Jackie got her certification as a coach. ESPN did a study and found that boxing is the most strenuous physical exercise you can do.” “All right, up against the wall!” Kennedy calls out. “This is my least favourite of the exercises,” Carroll mutters with a wry smile. Soon, the participants are doing wall sits, which powerfully exercise their legs. Over the course of the hour, they will perform a wide variety of strenuous exercises, all designed to keep participants fit, limber, and feeling good about themselves. As with any chronic condition onset, the reality of Parkinson’s can take a toll on mental health. “The important thing is that it’s not just the physical, but the mental,” says Kennedy. “They develop more self-confidence and form close relationships with people who are in exactly the same situation they are. When people work together, they bond more closely. I love to see that.” Certainly, the determination on the faces of the participants is witness to their powerful commitment to their own well-being. And there is laughter.
Jed Ruberto dons his gloves for a Rock Steady workout. | PETER FERGUS-MOORE
“Now you know how I lost 28 pounds in one year!” quips another boxer, George, as he eases out of the wall sit. Soon, the participants are shadow boxing, counting and chanting as they lunge and punch. After a good 20 minutes or so, Kennedy has the participants arrange themselves in a loose rectangular formation, again leaving plenty of space between. She tinkers with her tablet, until the familiar American Pie song blasts out of the gym speakers. Now, the participants and volunteer assistants exercise in place, with knee lifts, shuffles, arms windmilling and more, but above all, singing along with the chorus at the top of their lungs.

Northern Trails NSSA: Conserving cold water fisheries By Gord Ellis
Conservation organizations play an important role in lobbying for—and helping to preserve—the natural resources outdoors people enjoy. Some groups, like Ducks Unlimited or the Izaak Walton League, are national and work on a big canvas. Then there are groups that work on a smaller scale, but do big things. A group that fits this description is the Thunder-Bay-based North Shore Steelhead Association. Formed on January 13, 1973, by a group of avid steelhead anglers, the NSSA is a non-profit organization concerned with the conservation and preservation of fisheries in the tributaries of Lake Superior. The founding members of the NSSA knew instinctively that the protection and enhancement of the North Shore steelhead fishery (a migratory form of rainbow trout) would require they be focused primarily on stream and river habitat. The foresight of that early group led to the inclusion of coldwater species into the constitution. This move meant all salmonids (and other species) that used Lake Superior tributaries in their life cycle would benefit from the work of the club.
Some old NSSA clippings and newsletters. | GORD ELLIS eas of the Northwest have not had input from the NSSA. The club sits on several fisheries management zone committees, and has played a large role in helping to set the conservation-minded size and bag limits now in place for brook trout and steelhead. The one steelhead over 27 inches limit on the McIntyre and Neebing River was strongly supported by the NSSA and has helped to create an amazing urban fishery by drastically limiting harvest. The fish have responded and the numbers have boomed. The McIntyre and Neebing River are highly accessible and popular fisheries. This is where the future anglers are born.
Although the NSSA has had a wide variety of projects on streams all down the Ontario coast of Lake Superior, urban fisheries have been a primary concern. The incredible impact of the clubs work to the McIntyre and Neebing Rivers, McVicar Creek, the Current River and the Kaministiquia, will always be a large part of the club’s legacy. Initially, the NSSA took on smaller projects such as funding the placing of large boulders in McVicar Creek, located on the north side of Thunder Bay. McVicar Creek had been channelized in the late 70s due to flooding, but that destroyed a lot of the pool and riffle water young trout thrived in. Restoring that pool habitat, and then blasting deep pockets in some of the shale areas, started the rebirth of the creek that continues to this day. There were other projects through the 1980s, including the creation of a box on the headwaters of the McIntyre River that hatched out fry. That project was not deemed a success, and soon the focus was squarely on improving habitat and access to spawning grounds. The club helped to plan and fund improvements to the McIntyre River fishway, which allowed more adult steelhead to access the upper part of that great river. The McIntrye River
A North Shore steelhead. | GORD ELLIS has benefited from several habitat projects spearhead by the NSSA, including the addition of boulders for holding water, rip rap to slow erosion, and the addition of shrubs and trees. It has all made a difference. Perhaps the largest project the NSSA ever tackled was the creation of a fishway on the Current River dam at Boulevard Lake to open many miles of river to steelhead. The fishway was a huge and complicated undertaking. This columnist has a little insight into the project as I was President of the club for part of the build, and on the board for the rest. It took a ton of meetings, a lot of fundraising, and much help from government to get the fishway built. But the project was not just about building the fishway. Adult spawning steelhead were
trapped by club members (with help from the Ontario Ministry of Natural Resources) in the McIntrye River and then transported to the headwaters of the Current to “seed” the river. There was also work done to blast pockets in the shale section below Boulevard Lake Dam. This was to help fish navigate the steep drop from the fishway to Lake Superior. All in all, it was a huge project that took a lot of time and money. While the steelhead run on the Current has never been as large as the club had hoped, it did create an improved fishery and steelhead are now reaching the upper Current. The other huge role for the NSSA is as a voice for coldwater fisheries and management at the table of government. Very few major fisheries initiatives in the coastal ar-
There have been many other projects, and a lot of good work done or sponsored by the NSSA. Ongoing tagging and recapture work is being done on several streams and this is increasing knowledge about the fishery. The NSSA also sponsors the hugely popular fly fishing film festival every spring. As a non-profit, the financial base of the NSSA is collected from fundraising and donations from supporters. The club’s annual dinner and auction is attended by several hundred outdoors enthusiasts, and the proceeds go directly into area conservation projects. It’s an event that is both first class, and a chance to mix with anglers young and old while supporting the fish. To date, NSSA has invested over half a million in projects which enhance fisheries and recreational opportunities for all. The future of our coldwater fisheries is in good hands.

Northern Connections Geologic History of the Boundary Waters Just as lakes fill depressions in the north country today, 2.7 billion years ago inland seas collected primeval runoff. Rifts, or spreading cracks, developed on the seafloor and released basaltic lava—like the oozing black rivers in Hawaii—from the Earth’s molten mantle into the marine depths. (Today this process still occurs along the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.)
By Emily M. Stone
Lava that erupted directly into the bottom of that ancient ocean—an ocean at least 1,000 meters deep—cooled into characteristic structures called pillows. As the hot lava rose into cold water, it formed blobs reminiscent of a 1960s lava lamp. The pillows piled up on each other, up to 5,000 meters thick.
Sheer cliffs tower above sparkling waves. Smooth domes swell up before you on a portage. Craggy points reach out to caress the water. Oddly-shaped boulders loom in the depths or stand wet-footed in the shallows. They cradle the lakes, frame the vistas, and create stairs, rooms, and seats in your campsite home. Rocks are an integral part of any experience in my beloved Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness in northeastern Minnesota.
If you don’t go through Ely on your way into the Boundary Waters, chances are you’ll wind your way up the Gunflint Trail out of Grand Marais. The numerous low islands and serpentine shoreline of Saganaga Lake at the end of the Gunflint Trail give even the best navigators a challenge.
Good campsites are determined by the quality of rock outcrop they provide for an afternoon nap. Popular lakes are defined by the height of the mineral-streaked cliffs that waves crash against, or the placement of islands in strategic photo locations. Portages are remembered for the abundance of ankle-twisting rocks, or the lack of solid footing around marshy beaver ponds. The rocks of the Boundary Waters are appreciated—and cursed—by travelers, but understood by few. Knowing a little bit about the bedrock of its history can make the wilderness an even more awe-inspiring place.
The beautiful cliffs on Jordan Lake were likely formed along a small fault. Their vertical surface is an ideal place for pictographs. | EMILY STONE
The tangible geology of the Boundary Waters begins about 2.7 billion years ago. The rocks of this era are part of the Canadian Shield, the heart of the continent. This “craton” is the base on which the rest of North America was formed. In the
Boundary Waters, the shield is composed of three types of rocks: metamorphosed volcanic rocks, metasedimentary rocks, and granitic rocks. Many wilderness paddlers pass through the town of Ely on their way into the lake
country. If you wind through the back streets toward the intersection of 13th Avenue and Main Street, you may find yourself face-to-face with a large and lumpy boulder known as the Pillow Rocks. This metamorphosed volcanic rock is one of the oldest rocks on the continent.
The bedrock at Saganaga Lake was once giant plumes of molten rock that rose slowly up through the Earth’s mantle, like bubbles in a huge pot of simmering sauce. These batholiths, as geologists call them, changed composition as they rose and cooled beneath the continent. Originally the magma would have had a similar composition to the basalt that formed the pillow lavas. Over time, minerals rich in magnesium and iron, with higher melting temperatures, crystallized out, and left behind mostly silica, oxygen, and aluminum—the main components of granite. Although the granite cooled and hardened before it reached the Earth’s surface, subsequent erosion removed the rocks that covered it, eventually exposing it to the light of day. The massive, relatively

homogeneous mass of granite didn’t have weak spots for erosion to get its foot in the door, and so paddlers now glide past rounded islands and oddly-shaped bays. The granite that forms Saganaga Lake is just one example. Underneath canoe country’s most island-rich lakes, from Vermillion to Basswood to Sea Gull, you’ll find a similar story. In general, your most spectacular vistas, and most backbreaking portages, occur in areas where different rock types come together. The far northeastern section of the Boundary Waters, especially Clearwater, Duncan and Rose Lakes, is a grand example. Here, the soft, metasedimentary Rove Formation is interrupted by the Logan Intrusions. Long, linear lakes have been eroded from Rove, while volcanic rocks that were once hot and molten now rise majestically into the sky. In contrast, other elongated lakes, especially those aligned north/south, form along faults where fractures in the rock gave erosive water and ice an easy access point. The Vermillion Fault near Basswood Lake is the largest in the area. Anytime a stream course suddenly runs stick-straight, or a cliff juts like a wall above the water, you’ve likely found a place where deep tectonic stress caused the bedrock to break. Of course, bedrock is only part of the story. Huge masses of moving ice, up to two miles thick, advanced

In the Boundary Waters region, these glaciers possessed incredible erosive power and carved their way across the landscape. Many of the north or northeast trending lakes were gouged out beneath ponderous glaciers. MUSH LAKE RACING DOG BLOG
Two Races and a Road Trip By Erin Altemus In mid-February, we packed up 14 dogs, two mushers, one handler and a toddler and headed to the UP200, a 230-mile race starting and ending in Marquette, Michigan. My husband Matt drove the team and I drove the truck. The UP200 is an assisted race, meaning, handlers meet the team at each of the three checkpoints and help care for the dogs while the musher catches a nap before hitting the trail again. The race was fairly uneventful. Matt had smooth runs on a fast trail. Fast enough that Anna (our friend and handler) and I barely made it to each checkpoint before the team arrived. This was partly due to us trying to catch naps and help my mother-in-law with Sylvia. Example: After Matt left the first checkpoint, which is 70 miles into the race and where he stayed five hours between the hours of 1 and 6 a.m., we went back to the hotel room to catch a nap. I thought for sure as soon as we fell asleep, Sylvia would wake up, thereby providing our alarm clock. But at 9:30 a.m., I awoke, realizing we had exactly an hour and a half until Matt arrived at the next checkpoint, leaving us one hour of drive time and a little time to set up the truck—15 minutes, is how much time we had before Matt and team came in. This pattern continued the rest of the race—we slept through our alarms several times. Even at the finish, we found the last possible parking spot, wedging into a crammed parking lot of dog trucks and welcomed Matt and team in to his fifthplace finish. Given the competition, we were quite happy with his place and a decent purse check. But, forebodingly perhaps, we had three sick dogs at the end of the race. Word was that a GI bug was making its way around
Erin and Nancy take a nap and have a heart-to-heart on the straw at Sylver checkpoint. | ERIN ALTEMUS the teams. Two dogs for sure had it and a third, Beezus, just wasn’t eating. By the next morning, I asked the vets at the race banquet to look at him. He was running a fever, a fast pulse, and had nothing to eat or drink for 24 hours. The vet suggested we stop at their clinic on the way out of town.
Mushing in the mountains of Maine was a highlight of the trip. | ANNA HENNESSEY
From Marquette, Anna and I parted ways with Matt and Sylvia who returned home. Anna, myself and the dogs continued east toward Maine. We visited the vet who gave us fluids to give Beezus on the drive—we are both nurses, so not a problem, we thought. The vet and I still thought this was a GI bug, based on the other two dogs being sick.
days visiting Beezus and skijoring with the other 13 dogs in Sudbury. Our nice race check from the UP went directly to pay for Beezus’ care, but worse of course, was that Beezus would no longer be able to race Can AM with me in just over a week and worse than all that was the possibility that he would not recover at all. It was with huge relief that we were able to drive away with Beezus in the back seat of the truck a few days later and continue on to Maine.
dogs seemed in fine form and though I considered dropping down to the 100-mile race in the Can AM, I felt I had a team ready for the 250 and decided to stick to the plan. Anna flew home, Matt and Sylvia flew out and we headed to Fort Kent, a town in northern Maine that borders New Brunswick. I finished the Can Am 250 two years ago in fourth place and Matt has finished twice as well. The pressure was on (perhaps self-inflicted) to do well.
By the time we hit Canada out of Sault Ste. Marie, Beezus seemed worse, breathing rapidly and still running a temp. As nurses, Anna and I knew he was becoming septic. We stayed overnight in Sudbury and went to another vet the next morning. Beezus had full-blown pneumonia, requiring IV fluids, antibiotics and a hospital stay. Anna and I spent the next three
We spent five days at the home of friend and musher Sally Manikian’s mushing palace, as she calls it, running trails in the mountains. The next leg didn’t go as well as I mistakenly took two dogs that should have been dropped at the first checkpoint. One rode into Rocky Brook in the sled bag. By the time I left Rocky Brook, I had 10 dogs on the team, had banked a 45-minute nap in the past 24 hours and was nursing two sore wrists, one belonging to my trusted leader Nancy. We continued on to Sylver, arriving early afternoon. Here the team would rest almost four hours, and though I laid down next to Nancy and tried to shut my eyes, I couldn’t sleep. As my leave time approached, I was again running in fourth place in the standings. Nancy’s wrist was too sore for her to continue. Always, hindsight is 20/20. I wish that I had made the decision to rest longer, see if Nancy would recuperate. But, I chose to be competitive. We left the checkpoint with eight dogs, Temper and Itsy in lead. It would soon be dark. Allagash was over 50 miles away through some of the most mountainous country I have ever traveled by dog sled. I knew what I was up against. Itsy didn’t want to lead. She stopped and looked at me with confusion. I tried Tom. He was uncertain. Temper wouldn’t go solo. I tried him with Houdini but Houdini only wanted to turn around and smell Hush who was in heat. I tried Hush next to Temper but Temper could then only think about the girl next to him like some crush-crazed teenager. My possibilities quickly dwindled. I spent an hour trying dogs, moving a few hundred feet at a time. Finally, when the next musher passed me, we turned around, went back to Sylver and scratched. I’ve never scratched before. I’ve always been the one to get going when the going gets tough. But without a leader, we had little choice. Within a few days of returning home, I listened to a new audiobook on my commute up and down the Gunflint; “If we’re brave enough, often enough, we’ll fall … I’ve never met a brave person who doesn’t know failure, disappointment and heartbreak,” narrated Brene’ Brown from her book, Dare to Lead. It’s a harsh way to end a long season of training and one that ultimately seemed to be plagued with bad luck. But, after long discussions about our future with sled dogs on the two-day drive back

cluster hovers close above the queen of planets. The next night, Venus has arrived at the border, and on the 3rd the planet appears to be another star in the cluster. On the 4th, Venus is above the Pleiades, and from then on the two objects rapidly separate. The one wrinkle is the bright waxing moon that shines those nights, so keep your binoculars handy. And if that weren’t enough, April’s full moon is one of the closer ones this year. It rises the evening of the 7th, looking not only bigger and brighter than usual, but very round because it’ll be only slightly more than two hours before the moment of perfect fullness. Also, have a look on the 25th, when a young crescent moon of the next cycle appears below Venus and next to Aldebaran, the eye of Taurus, the bull. The University of Minnesota offers public viewings of the night sky at its Duluth and Twin Cities campuses. For more information and viewing schedules in Duluth, see the Marshall W. University of Minnesota Press, 2020, $24.95
With candid charm and characteristic grit, Olympic gold medalist Jessie Diggins connects the dots from her free-spirited upbringing in the woods of Minnesota to cross-country skiing in the bright spotlights of the Olympics. Going far beyond stories of races and ribbons, Diggins describes the challenges and frustrations of becoming a serious athlete; learning how to push through physical and psychological limits; and the intense pressure of competing at the highest levels. She also shares her harrowing struggle with bulimia, recounting how she healed from it in order to bring hope and understanding to others experiencing an eating disorder. Diggins’ bubbly personality and positive attitude makes this a fun, inspirational read.—Breana Roy

From the time the Port Arthur Shipbuilding Company was established in 1909 in what today is Thunder Bay until the company closed in 1993, (name was Western Drydock and Shipbuilding Company until 1916), it had built more than 125 vessels, carried out numerous major ship conversions and repaired thousands more in their dry dock. Considered one of the best shipbuilding companies in Canadian history, during its 83-year history it built ocean freighters, scows, tugs, bulk carriers, naval trawlers, warships (like Corvettes and minesweepers), barges, oil tankers, coasters, the famous passenger ship Noronic and the icebreaker Alexander Henry (now a museum ship at the Thunder Bay waterfront). It is credited with developing and manufacturing the first four-sided time clocks used in sports arenas, as well as items for the warplanes Hawker Hurricane and Curtis Hell Diver in their Aircraft Shop. The 148-page book has more than 150 pictures, vessel drawings and a detailed list of every ship built at Port Arthur Shipyards.—Elle Andra Warner

The question of why their father disappeared looms large over their efforts. For his grandson, Nick, who is coming of age, the answer may affect the course of his life. Strange Tales The Omars and Yooperlites of Northern Wilds By Elle AndraWarner
During your travels in Northern Wilds, have you come across a distinctive rock with an almost perfectly circular hole in it?
Omars are usually rounded, but this one is somewhat flat, brown in colour and with a rounded hole about a half-inch in diameter. | ELLE ANDRA-WARNER
Well, chances are you found an Omarolluk, commonly called an omar, and it came from just one place on earth: the Omarolluk Formation on the Belcher Islands in the southeast part of Hudson Bay. The omars were carried by glaciers more than 700 miles south and spread across central Canada and northern U.S. An Ontario Geological Survey noted, “It may not be the prettiest of rocks, but this grey rock (wacke) with brownish circles (calcareous concretions) has travelled a very long way.” Maybe not pretty, but they have become very popular with rock hounds; there’s even a Facebook page “Omar Omarolluk Collectors.”
This omarolluk is a dark-coloured greywacke which originated onthe Belcher Islands in Hudson Bay and was found on a Lake Superior beach. The hole in this rock is about an inch in diameter. | ELLE ANDRA-WARNER
The omars are dark siliceous greywacke (a variety of sandstone) and easy to identify because of its distinctive round holes. The pitted holes are the result of calcareous concretions (hard round mass of mineral matter) that were scooped out over time by weather and wave actions. Omars were first reported by Robert Bell of the Geological Survey of Canada back in the late 1800s. In 1879, he wrote about the abundance of dark grey fine-grained quartzite [greywacke] in the country between James Bay and Lake Superior and Huron. “Well-rounded fragments of this rock…characterized by round spots, from the size of a pea to that of a cricket ball or larger, of a lighter colour than the rest of the rock, which weather out into pits of the same form,” wrote Bell. And there is a Thunder Bay-connection to Omarolluk. The rock is named after Omarolluk, the Inuit hunter-guide and companion to Robert Flaherty, the famous filmmaker of the 1922 film, Nanook of the North, now considered the “Father of Documentary Film.” According to Macleans Magazine (January 14, 1980) “Omarolluk’s hunting and guiding skills allowed Flaherty to be the first white man to cross the northern Ungava Peninsula.” The connection? Michigan-born Flaherty lived a number of years in Port Arthur, (present-day Thunder Bay) and continued to visit relatives in the city throughout his life. Imagine night walking on a Lake Superior beach with a flashlight and seeing rocks that glow in the dark. Thanks to Michigan’s Erik Rintamaki who discovered them
University of Saskatchewan and according to an article in Mineral News (May 2018), were “the first verified sodalite documented from the state of Michigan.” “Rocks with fluorescent sodalite have been previously found in Michigan but were never sent to be verified,” said Rintamaki. “I wasn’t the first person to find one, but I am credited with the discovery.”
The glowing rocks known as Yooperlites were named by Erik Rintamaki, who discovered the rocks in 2017. | ERIK RINTAMAKI in 2017, those glowing rocks now have a name, Yooperlites.
the strange glowing stones were not listed in any of the books on Michigan minerals.
The grandson of Finnish immigrants, Rintamaki has been a long-time agate hunter on the beaches of Lake Superior, just like his father and grandfather. Years ago, after teaching his brother-in-law how to find agates, the two of them learned about fluorescent stones and minerals—and it became their dream to go searching at night for those rocks. But it wasn’t until 2017 that Rintamaki purchased an ultra-violet (UV) flashlight on eBay, headed out at 4 a.m. to a Lake Superior beach in Michigan’s UP Peninsula to see if he could find a fluorescent stone.
“No one could tell me what they were,” said Rintamaki. “I called them Yooperlites as the people from the UP Peninsula are called ‘yoopers’ and that’s where I found them.” (He has now trademarked the name Yooperlites, has a Facebook page and website: yooperlites.com.)
He did find a few small ones, went back, found more stones, upgraded to a 100 UV light—and kept finding more stones. But
So what makes the Yooperlites glow? While the rock itself is the granite-like syenite, blue-grey in colour with white streaks, it’s the presence of a fluorescent mineral called sodalite that makes the stone light up and glow streaks and specks of orange-yellow when placed under UV light.
And there’s an Ontario connection to Yooperlites. Researchers believe these Yooperlites came from the Coldwell Alkaline Complex on the North Shore of Lake Superior between Schreiber and Marathon, and were transported by glaciation from Canada to Michigan. Dating back 1,100 million years, the complex is the largest alkaline intrusion in North America. On a visit with geologists to the area, Rintamaki did find Yooperlites at Pebble Beach near Marathon. Rintamaki, who gives Yooperlite tours, said “People get hooked. They find the first one and then look to find another. Same thrill when finding the first and last one— same adrenaline. And if I can find one, anyone can.”
Rintamaki’s Yooperlites were analyzed at Michigan Technological University and NORTHERN WILDS

CATCHLIGHT
Wood Duck On a sunny April morning, I was hunkered in a blind I had placed near a small, woodland pond in northern Minnesota, hoping to photograph waterfowl. Spring is when male ducks are fully plumed with iridescent feathers glowing–all the better to impress hens. This male wood duck swam close to my blind, climbed onto a log in the water, and proceeded to preen its gorgeous feathers. Mother Nature used her entire box of Crayolas when she designed wood ducks.—Bill Marchel NORTHERN WILDS
