INTERVIEW WITH PLATINUM MEMBER Brian Lott
Chief Communications Officer, Group Communications Mubadala Investment Company Board Member AmCham Abu Dhabi By Karim Damerje
Q. Mubadala Investment Company recently formed from a merger between International Petroleum Investment Company and Mubadala Development Company, can you tell us more about the history of Mubadala Investment Company and what led to the merger?
developing new talent, particularly among our workforce of UAE nationals. Many of them have become federal ministers, CEOs, and sector experts in their own right. And of course our mission to represent the UAE at its commercial best around the world is a point of pride for every Mubadala employee.
A. Mubadala was created in 2002, largely to be a catalyst for economic diversification of the Emirate through investments in a number of strategic sectors such as health care, renewables and aerospace. IPIC was founded in 1984 under the same principle, although focused largely on creating value and diversification in the overseas petroleum and petrochemical sectors.
Q. How did you get Investment Company?
Unifying the two companies as Mubadala Investment Company makes perfect sense for the long-term vision of Abu Dhabi for many reasons. First, it creates a global investment champion with $125 billion in assets and a solid balance sheet. Second, the new entity has over 68,000 employees in the Group across 5 continents and over 30 countries, giving it more competitive scale. Finally, within the combined portfolio there are opportunities to draw on expertise in key sectors – such as real estate, financial investments and manufacturing – to create global champions for the UAE that will add more jobs in growing clusters of innovation, such as the Khalifa Industrial Zone and Nibras Aerospace Park.
Q. What are the Investment Company?
core
values
of
Mubadala
A. The core values of Mubadala have been a quartet of guiding principles driving our behavior as employees and investors: Accountability; Integrity; Partnership; and Inspiration. We believe those values are true to the heritage of the UAE and reflect our commitment to a commercial mindset that is responsible, agile and results-oriented.
Q. What project of are you most proud of?
Mubadala
Investment
Company
A. As Mubadala’s Chief Communications Officer, nothing makes me prouder than our company’s role in
6
your

with
Mubadala
A. I came to Abu Dhabi in 2009, helping to create the Advanced Technology Investment Company and the semiconductor manufacturing giant GLOBALFOUNDRIES as part of the Mubadala Group. It allowed me to use my communications and public affairs background to help build a new industrial champion in a key sector for the UAE, and that led to my appointment as head of communications at Mubadala in 2012.
Q. What long-term Investment Company have?
vision
does
Mubadala
A. Mubadala’s vision is to make money, through smart investments and creation of global champions across a number of sectors key to the UAE, with strong commercial returns that help diversify the Abu Dhabi economy. We have already made great progress: GLOBALFOUNDRIES is the world’s second-largest semiconductor manufacturing company; Yahsat is a leader in satellite communications, with two satellites already launched and another coming in 2018; Nova Chemicals in North America and CEPSA in Spain are energy giants; Masdar is world-renowned for its investments and leadership in sustainability; and EGA is one of the largest aluminum manufacturers in the world.
Q. Mubadala Investment Company currently has investments in more than 30 countries, what American companies have you invested in? How does that influence Mubadala Investment Company’s vision? A. The US is a key market for Mubadala, and has been a significant partner in working with us to create some of the global champions I mentioned above. GLOBALFOUNDRIES is one of the largest employers

in upstate New York, with over 8,000 employees at facilities in that state and in Vermont and California. We have also partnered with leading institutions such as Cleveland Clinic, to create Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi, which has been an incredible addition to the region’s healthcare landscape. We invest in AMD; GE; Carlyle Group; and a number of others. Companies including IBM, Related Companies and Occidental Petroleum have become strategic partners in sectors such as technology, real estate and energy. Of course, in the aviation and defense services sector, we work very closely with Raytheon, Lockheed Martin, Boeing and others, so our US partnerships are critical to our long-term success.
Q. What are your thoughts as the newly appointed Chairman of AmCham’s Roundtables Committee? What plans do you have for the committee?
strong ties to many AmCham members, and being able to work with one, strong organization across many sectors is an advantage for us. We also appreciate the leadership of the Ambassador and her involvement in encouraging stronger business ties between the two countries, which AmCham helps facilitate.
Q. What do you do to relax after work? Do you have any particular hobbies or interests? A. I’m fairly religious about swimming every day after work. It’s one of the benefits in living in a warm climate year-round, that you can hit the pool no matter the season. It helps clear my mind and mark the separation between the work day and night at home. I also like to cook and listen to music. I’m a passionate opera fan, book reader, film buff and tennis enthusiast.
A. The Roundtable Summit scheduled for October is a great opportunity to get down to business, to talk about how we can deepen ties across our two countries in sectors that are critical to the economies of both. It’s through this kind of dialogue that business is deepened and extended, and I’d like to think we can be focused on a long-term plan to drive business as well as coordinate on big events.
Q. What Corporate do you participate in?
Social
Responsibility
activities
A. Mubadala is quite active in the UAE community, supporting a number of initiatives focused on STEM activities as well as general presence for key Abu Dhabi events such as ADSW. We also encourage our portfolio companies to engage in robust CSR initiatives, such as Mubadala Petroleum’s work in Thai fishing communities and EGA’s support for new infrastructure and schools in West Africa.
Q. What is the most important lesson you have had to learn as a leader? A. Empowering my team rather than being a sole contributor. I’m fortunate to work with a fantastic group of experienced professionals, so I give them as much latitude as possible to deliver the work they can do best with clear direction.

Part of the Council’s strategy is to exchange ideas and share their experiences with their counterparts to strengthen the relations between industries and support SME development programs. AmCham Abu Dhabi Celebrates American Independence Day AmCham Abu Dhabi celebrated the 241st anniversary of the United States of America’s Declaration of Independence at its annual “4th of July” Celebration on Friday, July 7, 2017. As the celebration was held on 7-7-17 and started at 7 pm, the lucky numbers inspired AmCham Abu Dhabi to celebrate Las Vegas and the state of Nevada. Hundreds of business leaders, U.A.E. and U.S. government officials, military officers, AmCham Abu Dhabi members, and the greater American community attended the celebration at InterContinental Abu Dhabi. The event included an official ceremony, posting of the colors and flag by the U.S. Marines, a cake cutting, dinner, games and dancing. Guests of honor, U.A.E. Minister of Culture and Knowledge Development, H.E. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan and U.S. Embassy Abu Dhabi Charge d’affaires Ethan Goldrich, spoke about shared values and the importance of the U.S. - U.A.E. relationship. In his remarks, H.E. Sheikh Nahayan Mabarak Al Nahayan said, “I am deeply honored to be celebrating with you tonight. We in the United Arab Emirates have always admired your principles and your success. Our country is fortunate in being able to call the United States of America a friend. Our political, commercial, and educational linkages are deeply rooted in confidence and trust and provide a strong and stable foundation for our friendly relations, now and in the future.” He added “The U.A.E. and every other nation that has studied the U.S. Declaration of Independence and the history of the United States recognize the necessary connection between freedom and happiness. The friendship between the U.S. and the U.A.E. will surely endure as we each in our own way reinforce the unalienable rights of life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.” Ethan Goldrich Charge d’affaires at the U.S. Embassy said “On the 241st birthday of the Anniversary of the American Declaration of Independence, we should remember that many of the American founders were businessmen and merchants. We take pride in the role
