MESSAGE FROM U.S. EMBASSY CHARGE D’AFFAIRES American companies here in Singapore understand that doing good for the community and doing well in business are two sides of the same coin. They understand that corporate social responsibility is not just about being moral, or just, or fair; it’s about good business. They know that winning at the expense of the communities where they operate is a shortterm proposition. They know that employees and consumers who feel respected by businesses will respond in kind. And they know that companies which hold high standards of governance, environmental stewardship, and social responsibility deliver strong returns. American companies in Singapore are making all of us proud. As you browse through the AmCham Cares publication, you will note that the investment American businesses make touches every corner of the island. Every segment of the population – from children to the elderly, from gifted to individuals with special needs – is positively impacted. American investment transforms lives. As the 2018 ASEAN Chair, Singapore has emphasized resilience and innovation as key aspirations for the whole of ASEAN. American businesses in Singapore already embody these ideals. That is why American companies continue to thrive. What attracts people around the world to American companies is our courage to aim high, our commitment to fair rules, and our capacity to translate possibility into opportunity for all. American innovation, American entrepreneurship, and the American way of doing business stand for excellence. I would also like to commend the American Chamber of Commerce Singapore for highlighting the good work of the American business community. This publication is only one of the ways AmCham displays their commitment to advancing business in the region. Thank you for what you do.

Ann Yom Steel
Executive Director AmCham Singapore
MESSAGE FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR This is the third year we are celebrating the AmCham CARES program and I am heartened to see the strong commitment and outstanding effort from U.S. businesses in addressing the needs of the local community. 2017 was the year we honored 42 American companies who dedicated over 44,000 volunteer hours and 150,000 employees to community service in Singapore. This year alone, we received an overwhelming response in applications, and will be recognizing 52 companies who have demonstrated a strong understanding of the linkages between business operations and society. AmCham CARES recognizes a distinct American model of corporate citizenship that combines sustainability and socially responsible business practices with strong community engagement. Member companies’ corporate citizenship programs were assessed on four main factors — communications, measurement, strategy, and sustainability. As a platform, and an opportunity, to promote and showcase social impact successes amongst American companies in Singapore, AmCham CARES engages with our member companies to assess, improve, and celebrate their efforts to take meaningful responsibility of their actions in society. As we continue to chart America’s bold future and commitment within the region, it is pivotal for us to highlight the values that set U.S. companies apart. Our presence in the region continue to be about playing an integral role in the region’s social and economic development and improving the lives of the people. This publication presents a compilation of the fantastic achievements of this year’s recipients. By promoting the open sharing of effective best practices, I hope to encourage even more companies to spread their skills, caring, and sense of volunteerism through community engagement in Singapore and the region.

Adecco's CSR initiatives are designed to solve youth unemployment issues. The initiatives focus on youth development and how the next generation of leaders are being developed. Over the years, our own employees have been involved in helping young people access work opportunities that will offer them brighter futures. Our main CSR initiatives include the Win4Youth and the Way to Work program, which consists of Experience Work Day and CEO for One Month. Our Win4Youth program brings Adecco Group employees, associates and clients together to share their passion for sport and to have a positive impact on the lives of young people around the world. By clocking in kilometres and hours doing sport activities to raise funds for charity, we convert every kilometre and minute into donations to support foundations that further youth development causes. In 2017, Adecco Singapore clocked in 53,491 kilometres through swimming, cycling, and running. Experience Work Day, is a one day job shadowing program where youth are given an opportunity to learn from our employees. This provides them with a richer view on the possibilities for their future careers and also allows them to experience the work life before heading out to the workforce. CEO for One Month gives youth the opportunity to work alongside Adecco’s Global CEO. Selected candidates work closely with their country CEO and different teams in Adecco to help build a better future workforce.

2017 marks the third year that AbbVie participated in Week of Possibilities, an annual global company initiative. This time, over 130 colleagues engaged over five activities, interacting with disadvantaged children, youths, with special needs, the intellectually disabled and the elderly as well as spring cleaning. As one AbbVie community, employees put in 426 hours which also contributed towards the 2017 President’s Challenge Volunteer Drive. More than time or numbers, every AbbVie volunteer gave their all. Those who went to spruce up the Metta Home in Woodlands while the beneficiaries were out at River Safari, cleaned very nook and corner. Those that accompanied the intellectually disabled to River Safari, found themselves responsible for their comfort and safety. A few were wheelchair-bound or needed support when walking. Under the guidance of the Home’s professional staff, everyone took it in their stride, ensuring that their new friends enjoyed the sights. At the rehabilitation centre for the elderly, AbbVie staff volunteers approached them with warmth and ease, assisting them with food preparation and craft work. Breaking spontaneously into popular Chinese songs from the past, the AbbVie team got calls for encores and more visits in the future! It was the same with another group of colleagues who learnt to make pasta and cookies with the Chen Su Lan Methodist Children’s Home. Briefed to approach these disadvantaged children with sensitivity and care, they helped the children get the most out of the session, resulting in their excitement and pride with their culinary achievements.

Baxter’s mission, 'Save and Sustain Lives,' is a mere four words, yet rich with meaning for our employees worldwide. It channels our passion as we address fundamental healthcare needs of patients and their clinicians worldwide; and it guides the choices we make in the service of sound corporate citizenship. Baxter employees are tenacious in pursuing lasting social, environmental and economic value for our stakeholders consistent with our mission. In Singapore, we kicked off our CSR work by developing a communication plan how to engage and keep our employees informed. The plan included an employee survey to find out which types of charities we should engage in; opportunities for employees to get to know the selected charities; pre-and post-communications after each event to keep employees up to date. In 2017 employees at Baxter Singapore volunteered nearly 1000 hours to Make a Meaningful Difference in our community. The volunteer events were organized with 4 charities and focused on helping the underserved in the community. The team participated in nearly 15 events such as job shadowing, providing meals to the needy and helping renovate a home in the community. Our CSR initiative in Singapore received high satisfaction scores in our Employee survey and we are proud of our overall contribution to the Community which further drives Baxter’s Mission to Save and Sustain Lives. In addition to the work of the local team, the company has focused on CSR for four decades. The company receives ongoing recognition for its work including being recognized in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) for 18 consecutive years.

In 2017, Caterpillar’s corporate social responsibility group (known as Corporate Social Innovation or CSI) in Singapore took a break from its traditional approach and incorporated more elements of employee engagement when executing its corporate social activities. The purpose was to cultivate a stronger sense of social responsibility in employees and encourage them to play their part to achieve our social efforts as one Caterpillar enterprise and make the world a better place to live in. Shoe Donation Drive (in partnership with Soles4Souls) and Food Bundling (in partnership with FoodBank) were the 2 major CSI events that took place in 2017. Caterpillar's Shoe Donation Drive introduced an inter-facility competition across four facilities in Singapore over 4 weeks. The drive was aimed at encouraging employees to go an extra mile to collect shoes for donation from family and friends. At the end of the event, Caterpillar had collected, cleaned, and donated close to 1,300 pairs of covered-toe shoes for the poor worldwide. Caterpillar's Food Bundling initiative allowed us ti buy loose staple food item from Foodbank. We created packing lines in our facility made up of our employees to pack the food items into food bundles. A total of 700 food bundles were packed. Once the food bundles have been packed, 20 teams made up of 2-3 volunteers were formed. These volunteer teams went doorto-doot to deliver the food bundles to low income families in Singapore. 2017 was the third year Caterpillar has supported this initiative.

“We believe that we have a responsibility to return to our community and world a portion of what we earn from our endeavours and that of the people who work with us.” – Mary Nelson, Co-Founder of Kemin. Way back to 1980s, employees inherited Kemin’s mindset on the philosophy of giving back. Fast forward to recent years, 60 employees took part in Walk for Rice in April 2017. For every 200m walked, 1 bowl of white rice and brown rice will be donated to a needy family. This is a perfect combination of encouraging a healthy lifestyle with CSR initiatives. In January 2018, employees with additional food items and gift vouchers sponsored by Kemin, distributed these items to needy families on door-to-door basis. In November 2016, a group of Kemin employees went to Nepal to rebuild houses for victims of Nepal Earthquake, under Habitat for Humanity project.
