A Milestone of Prestigious Accreditation In celebration of having recently earned a globally recognized certification for high-caliber standards in education, Deputy Director of Yew Chung Education Foundation Norm Dean speaks about the latest development of an educational institution founded more than 80 years ago here in Hong Kong

S
ince joining Yew Chung Education Foundation in Hong Kong as Deputy Director last year, Norm Dean – who has been a teacher, principal, school superintendent and a consultant on school curriculum in various countries throughout his career – has brought the meaning of global education to the next level. Dean’s background as a specialist in education is highly regarded not only because he has vast experience in a broad range of areas including strategic panning, performance management, community building and student learning enhancement, but also because he has done so across continents. He spent the last eight years in the Middle East, namely Dubai, where there are traditions and cultural differences from other parts of the world. In the world of education, however, they all share very similar fundamentals.
3 • 2015
“At the core, a strong relationship that a teacher has with a child is what makes a good learning experience, and that was the same in Dubai as it is in Melbourne, New York, London or Karachi,” says Dean. There are slight differences, with varied organizational structure of the schools and curriculums nuanced to a particular culture at a particular location in a particular time, Dean points out. “Teachers may approach subjects slightly differently, but how we engage kids and provide them with learning opportunities while monitoring and tracking their learning experience are pretty much the same in a good learning institution wherever you go.” His moxie is to “continually challenge ourselves” by “adding value” as educators in the field. “All of us who are part of Yew Chung International School (YCIS) should ask themselves every day: what kind of value can we add to the organization and ultimately to student learning?” says Dean.
3 • 2015
“What I’m trying to do is to inculcate that belief system and build that belief system in the organization.”
Another milestone Dean arrived in Hong Kong during a very special occasion for YCIS in 2014. The secondary school campus in Kowloon Tong had just obtained a high-level educational accreditation from the Council of International Schools, a global membership organization. The process of securing such accolade is notoriously arduous, and once achieved, the proverbial stampof-approval indicates a school has met the high-caliber educational standards set by the council. It has been a lengthy process of reflecting on the school’s values and performance, Dean acknowledges. “It requires a lot of honest self-interrogation because what the accreditation team does is come to the school and find out the veracity of what we say we are in

reports,” he explains. “By design or accident, the process generates a lot of good collaboration and input from our staff members who may not otherwise be in conversation together.” Much value also stems from a subsequent appraisal report by CIS’s accreditation team, which details a school’s achievements and areas done well as well as recommendations of areas for improvement. “If you have done your self-study well, there should be no surprises; but again, it requires building on those areas in an ongoing plan, which we have obviously done,” Dean says. “It’s great to get the award and it’s nice to get the plaque, but fundamentally it’s about the school testing itself against standards that have been internationally tested,” he adds. It is also an achievement indicative of the progress of an educational institution that started decades ago from a humble beginning. In 1932, Tsang Chor-Hang founded Yew Chung School, which she
4
had run for four decades before her retirement. It closed for a few years before Dr Betty Chan Po-king, Tsang’s daughter and currently a director of Yew Chung Education Foundation, revived the school and eventually expanded it into an international institution that it is today with campuses in Hong Kong, Mainland China and the United States for more than 6,600 pupils collectively. YCIS, with around 900 students, is part of an elite educational community and now a member school of CIS, whose membership includes around 680 schools, plus 490 colleges and universities, in 109 countries. In Hong Kong, there are 23 members.
Scholarship schemes In recent years, YCIS has been granting scholarships to deserving students in the form of two- or threeyear tuition fee coverage. It is a scholar-
ship scheme for which Dr Chan herself is a key driver in providing students with an opportunity for world-class education. For the first time, it has been expanded to offer full secondary school scholarships, which translates to seven years of tuition coverage (from Year 7 to Year 13). Such benefits covering the entire tenure of secondary education is rare amongst international schools in the city. “The scholarship is an opportunity for students that might otherwise not be able to participate fully in a school such as ours,” says Dean, noting that the latest scheme is also a deliberate attempt to enrich the organization’s own learning environment. The full scholarship is accessible to students who excel in a variety of ways, including overall academic performance and specialized subjects of music, art or sports, he adds. “For a school to be a cohesive vibrant community, we need diversity and to add that mix into the student body,
3 • 2015
which will individually benefit the students and collectively benefit them from the different ideas, experiences and perspectives coming in [to the school’s community].” A key criterion in the scholarship is for candidates who demonstrate an ability to give back to the community. “In the simplest terms, this means, for example, the great sportsman is going to be competing for the school in a sports team or more than one sports team, as a way of giving back,” says Cathy Ben-David, Head of Marketing and Admissions at YCIS, adding that applications for a full scholarship are now open.
A well-rounded education YCIS as educational institution is keen on taking a holistic approach to learning because “every child in the school is going to have particular interests, strengths and areas of passions,”
3 • 2015
Dean says. The educational programs and teachers are here to nurture and develop those individual talents. At YCIS, students conclude their international curriculum according to the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE); in the final two years of school, they begin a course of the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP). “The educational style here encourages much dialogue amongst students and participation in real life experiences so learning is interesting, relevant and tangible,” says Dean. “For example, every year students embark on an overseas trip to learn about other cultures whilst participating in community projects.” “It’s not just a holiday but about doing something beneficial to another community,” he adds. “From these real-life experiences, they realize there are people out there in other parts of the world who are far worse off than we are here.”
In classrooms students are exposed to a diversity of views, too. “The curriculum is structured in a way that, in IB for example, we deliberately bring in multiple perspectives from multiple cultural heritages,” says Dean. By the time students acquire their IB diploma, they often have a much broader international outlook. These are part of a design to foster a decent character in students, Dean points out. “The character aspect is a central part of what we do. As students graduate and move on to pursue future endeavors, they can continue to achieve success that is not merely measured by academic results but also whether they become good, respectable individuals in society.” “When our students believe they are able to making a valuable contribution to society in some way and are confident to live a life that respects those values, then it is a job well done on our part.”

’m absolutely charmed by our kids and how hardworking they are, how kind they are to each other and how curious they are about the world,” says Head of School Elect Dr Gregg Maloberti of Canadian International School of Hong Kong (CDNIS) in Aberdeen. Having joined CDNIS last August, Maloberti is the international school’s fifth head of school since it opened in 1991. He recalls his first impression of CDNIS students during his tenure as dean of admissions at The Lawrenceville School in New Jersey – they stood out because they talked about their school with great pride and showed a sense of community mindedness. For eight consecutive years, CDNIS has been recognized as a leading international school in Hong Kong Business magazine’s “High Flyers” campaign. With nearly 1,850 students representing 41 nationalities, it offers an opportunity of international education to students aged as young as three years old, and all the way to Grade 12 when they graduate. “When people initially look at the facilities, the quality of teachers, the long queue for admission, and the record of college placement among our students, they’ll say, ‘Something’s going on here,’” explains Maloberti. “But what really makes the difference is once they see the culture of the school – once they see relationships between teachers and students are so wholesome and supportive, and their child can make friends, connect and be an active learner,” he says. “There’s a sense of warmth and openness of community, which make a very Canadian posture toward the world.”
Getting in Like many other international schools in Hong Kong, CDNIS is at a state of full capacity with lengthy waiting lists spanning up to several years. Most of the school’s intake is in pre-reception (three years old by December 31 of year of entry) and
3 • 2015
reception (four years old by December 31 of year of entry). Competition is fierce, but Maloberti assures there is still a chance for admission in the later years even if a child misses pre-reception and reception. “In the upper schools, you have a reasonable chance of getting in, because the big excitement about entering the school is at the lower grades,” he says. “We do have openings because people move away. And then we have natural openings where we add extra sections, particularly at sixth grade.” Deciding who gets in is based on a selective admissions process and the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum’s IB Learner Profile, which aims to develop internationally minded citizens who are caring, open-minded, balanced and principled. “We invite the children in for a 40-minute session with our teachers and a small group of other kids, and we assess them on a number of different areas as well as their readiness and willingness to engage with each other,” Maloberti points out. “If they just sit in the corner and don’t talk to the teacher or play with other children, they may not meet our requirements for admission.” “We are looking for kids who can demonstrate good language and social skills,” he adds. “They’re curious about the world around them. They are following directions and asking, ‘Can I play with this toy?’ or ‘Can I share with the other students?’”

through-train program starting from the primary years and extending through high school graduation. “The IB program was developed because diplomats wanted to be able to move their children around the world and be sure their children could follow
a new school with the same curriculum in every place they went,” says Maloberti. “We looked at the global mindedness and said, ‘That’s part of our mission and identity.’” Independent of governments and national systems, the IB is an
IB programs CDNIS is one of the schools in Hong Kong that offers the International Baccalaureate (IB) curriculum to the entire student body, from the Primary Years Programme to Middle Years Programme and Diploma Programme. More than 3,900 schools worldwide use the IB curriculum, and 59 schools in Hong Kong are authorized to teach students in IB programs. However, most schools in Hong Kong use IB as an honors program and only a handful of schools offer a

amalgamation of different international frameworks and curricula aimed at encouraging students to think critically and learn in both a local and international environment. “The IB exam is about ascertaining whether the student has acquired enough skills to be able to analyze information before they do something, to create an artistic portfolio, to make a project that’s meaningful, to talk about how they’re going to engage with the outside world and really develop a plan to do it,” explains Maloberti. “We encourage our students to take exams like the SAT and ACT, but we’re not driving our curriculum around that.” CDNIS has maintained aboveaverage results in the IB exam since its IB accreditation in 2010. Compared to
8
the global average of 29.9 out of 45 in 2014, CDNIS students received an average score of 36.1. Additionally, 98 percent of its graduates received an IB Diploma, with 62 percent of them accepted to a top university recognized by QS World University Rankings.
Outside the classroom “Our school day has been over for an hour and a half, and you can see teachers and kids still walking around, looking for each other, and nobody’s in a hurry to leave,” Maloberti notes of the school environment on a typical day. “It’s a learning space that’s more than just a school for kids. They come here in the afternoon for after school
activities and show up on the weekend to play on sports teams.” Open to CDNIS students and those from other schools, extracurricular activities are scheduled every day, targeting interests such as music, art, cooking, science, engineering and sports including tennis, football and swimming. Most are aimed at younger students in the primary years, but there are also activities and clubs, such as Model United Nations, that keep upper school students busy. Besides activities for kids, CDNIS hosts workshops for parents, alternating between lower school and upper school every two to three weeks. “We have after school and evening workshops where parents can learn about
3 • 2015
our curriculum, grading system and how we want students to use the computer,” says Maloberti. “We also have parent education classes on topics such as parenting and child-raising.”
Other developments In the midst of attaining its Council of International Schools accreditation, CDNIS has been revising its governance structure and strategy. By early March, a team of educators from around the world will have spent a week at the school evaluating CDNIS’ operations and management. “We’ve looked at it as an opportunity to talk about learning and this community, and how we might improve it,” says Maloberti. “We’ve already made loads of changes about the way we do things and the way we think, because we got committees together thinking about these questions. We’d like to think the accreditation is an outcome that results from a year and a half’s worth of inquiry into our school and how it functions.” In addition, a new Chinese Cultural Centre opening this fall will offer a new 400-square-meter space for Chinese classes, featuring four classrooms, a library, a small performance space and a teacher’s room. Chinese furniture, art and cultural artifacts will adorn the center, allowing students to celebrate Chinese culture. “It’s not as if having Chinese furniture will make them better Chinese students, but it helps them see that this is an environment that has things they can talk about and use the language,” says Maloberti. “When they leave their homeroom classroom and go up to the Chinese Cultural Centre, they think, ‘We’re going somewhere special.’” It’s more than just about achieving good grades the conventional way, Maloberti believes. “We’re really good at creating a joyful, engaging learning environment,” he says. “Our kids feel happy and safe here, and they are able to develop healthy and effective relationships with their teachers.”

An American School for Fine Arts The Savannah College of Art and Design (SCAD) – founded in the historic US city of Savannah, Georgia – is a specialized university preparing students for a career in the creative industry. In 2010, it opened a campus here in Hong Kong at the site of the former North Kowloon Magistracy, where a gigantic collage mural stands to represent creativity, diversity and a global perspective

oused in the former North Kowloon Magistracy, with many parts of the heritage site either preserved or revitalized, SCAD Hong Kong radiates a palpable vibe of vibrant creativity through its mix of the old and avantgarde. The school owes part of its distinctive dynamism to its international student body. Its current 600-plus students hail from 35 countries and regions. “Many are from the US and around 65 percent are from Hong Kong,” says Michael Shreve, Associate Vice President at SCAD Hong Kong. SCAD Hong Kong is so far the only campus in Asia established by SCAD, a private, non-profit accredited institution conferring Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in the art and design disciplines. The other SCAD campuses are in the US cities of Savannah and Atlanta, Georgia, as well as Lacoste in France.
3 • 2015
SCAD Hong Kong offers Bachelor of Fine Arts, Master of Arts and Master of Fine Arts degrees. The degree programs run a full range of disciplines, from the more traditional fashion design, fashion management and marketing, graphic design, illustration, painting, photography to motion media design, sequential art and visual effects.
Unique offerings The breadth and depth of programs offered at SCAD Hong Kong distinguish the school from the other tertiary institutions in the city. “SCAD is unique across the world because of our unique programming,” Shreve says. “Even in the Hong Kong campus, which is small by our US standards, we offer 21 degree programs and 14 areas of concentration.” “Our focused mission sets us apart,” he adds. “We exist to prepare talented students for a creative career.
3 • 2015
One of our strengths and appeal is that our students know they will get the full academic and holistic support during their studies as well as the careeroriented support and resources they will have access to, even after graduation.” Apart from the degree programs, SCAD Hong Kong offers SCAD Core courses for students with varied backgrounds. This is a well-rounded undergraduate general coursework curriculum that consists of such general education classes as History, Mathematics and English, in addition to the study of art and design, including color theories, 2D and 3D designs, and computer art applications. “Students get general art foundation knowledge about how to be designers,” Shreve explains. “Later on when they declare majors, they can focus more specifically on their passion. We support them with resources for them to be creative in their future careers.”
The school has also launched a career-focused International Baccalaureate program, which enables high school students interested in the field of design to take pre-university college-level classes. Available as a joint program, students can enroll in the coursework through their local high schools. The classes are available to them based on the curriculum of their respective schools.
East meets West SCAD was founded in Savannah in 1978 and started with 78 students. Currently over 12,000 students pursue their studies at SCAD’s global campuses. “We are uniquely positioned to draw on our significant resources in the US. We hope to play a part in pushing back the boundaries of what Hong Kong has been doing in art and design,” Shreve says. Opened in the fall of 2010, SCAD Hong Kong could not have established
11
its presence in the city at a better time. The Hong Kong government has been deploying substantial resources to refashioning the city into a hub of creativity. The city’s art scene has since captured international attention with the annual Art Basel Hong Kong exhibition and a growing number of international art galleries opening their local branches. All these developments need the support of a new generation of artists, designers and specialized managers. “SCAD in the US has a noteworthy history of enrolling a great number of students from the Greater China and Asia,” Shreve says. “We think it is important to give back to Asia and the many Asian students who have studied in the US. We also have a crucial role in Hong Kong’s repositioning as a design-oriented hub.”
Practical experience Across all of its campuses, SCAD emphasizes small class teaching. “Globally, we try to keep the faculty and students ratio under 1:16,” Shreve points out. “Because SCAD is practice-oriented, it is vital for students to have quick and easy access to faculty members.” “The faculty all have solid professional backgrounds before they went into education,” he adds. “We want our students to benefit from the backgrounds and experiences brought into the classroom by the faculty.” A case in point is the recent “SCAD Hong Kong Fashion Showcase 2015.” The fashion parade attracted over 250 industry professionals from Hong Kong and beyond, and generated much
media buzz. Additional glitz and glamour came with the appearance of Miss J Alexander, the celebrity coach for the hit reality show “American Next Top Model.” The event provided students with an opportunity to showcase their creations to professionals, brands, designers and media. “We tried to give them the experience of what their future career will be like,” Shreve notes. “In an event like a fashion showcase the stake is high … the students were pushed to make their works reach professional quality.” “Our students get the professional experience before graduation,” he adds. “They will get to know what it’s like to stand in front of a panel of designers, pitching ideas, defending their ideas, and going back to the drawing board to refine the ideas. And at the end of the projects, they have learned to explain the thought process.”
A cross-cultural bridge In many ways SCAD Hong Kong is a cross-cultural bridge connecting local students with the creative industry markets in the US and other parts of the world. Because the programs offered in the various campuses are identical, students can opt to study parts of their programs in different
12
3 • 2015
locations, hence gaining additional exposure to a diversity of cultural and academic experiences. “We are here to give students the global perspective and cross-cultural global learning experience,” Shreve believes. “These will make them more appealing to potential employers.” The transition from one campus to another is seamless and often just requires the students to fill out a study abroad application in SCAD’s portal. Moreover, students from different locations have access to the centralized resources for internship and jobs, and internship opportunities are available to students of all years. Similar to the other SCAD campuses, SCAD Hong Kong has a dedicated career office that students can access even after their graduation. “We have a job portal and in fact, last year we had more internship and job opportunities than students enrolled. We support students with resume building and interview skills training,” Shreve notes. Events like the fashion parade and internship programs are aimed at promoting the collaboration between SCAD Hong Kong and the local creative industry and corporate sector. They not only bring about in-depth interaction between students and companies, but in some cases, students will find themselves internship or job
3 • 2015
opportunities at the participating companies. “Locally we work with CLP, YSL, Ocean Park, HSBC, and UBS, among others,” Shreve points out. “For instance, our student designers helped UBS redesign its mobile app for wealth management clients, making it more user-friendly and fun to use. This sort of experience is valuable to the students.”
Endless opportunities Although SCAD Hong Kong is a fairly young institution, the school is proud of the contributions it has made so far. “We are nurturing a new generation of talented artists and designers. We hope they will stay and contribute to the local creative industry,” Shreve says.
Globally 93 percent of SCAD graduates are either employed or pursuing further education within 10 months of graduation. “We have a pretty sterling track record in terms of graduate employment rate across all locations. We have graduates from SCAD Hong Kong now working for Ogilvy, Leo Burnett and Disney, among others in the creative industry,” Shreve notes. “I think the potential for the creative industry in the Asia Pacific region is boundless,” he believes. “That’s why we are here to promote talent and quality in the art and design discipline.” “We have a lot to offer beyond the talent of our students,” he says. “Hong Kong has invested substantially in refashioning itself into a design hub while China is a fast-growing market. All these provide great momentum for the development of the creative industry.”

Guide to International Schools Harrow International School Hong Kong 38 Tsing Ying Road, Tuen Mun, New Territories, Hong Kong
School Profile Harrow International School Hong Kong is the first co-educational international boarding and day school in Hong Kong. When it opened in September 2012, it became the third school in the Harrow family of schools in the Asia region. The School provides a British independent style of education from Early Years to Y13 in a magnificent crescent-shaped building with custom-built facilities near the Gold Coast, Tuen Mun. It integrates elements of educational philosophy, practice and traditions from Harrow School in England into the diverse international community of Hong Kong. In delivering its vision statement, Leadership for a better world, the School places emphasis on high expectations of academic excellence, breadth and quality of extra-curricular achievement, positive contributions to the School community, and the development of leadership skills. Activities and experiences in and out of the classroom focus on the development of the six leadership attributes outlined in the vision statement:
School Structure & Curricula
The School has a number of phases in its Lower School (K1to Y5) and the Upper School (Y6 to Y13): • The Early Years (K1 and K2) follows the English based ‘Early Years Foundation Stage’ Curriculum. • The Pre-Prep School (Y1 to Y5) follows the English based ‘New Primary Curriculum’ and the English ‘Primary Strategy’. • The Prep School (Y6 to Y8) offers a skills-based curriculum based on the National Curriculum designed to manage the transition from the homeroom environment in the Pre-Prep School to the more subject-specific environment in the Senior School. • The Senior School (Y9 to Y11) curriculum is based on IGCSE courses studied over three years. • The Sixth Form (Y12 to Y13) curriculum is based on A-level courses studied over two years, together with AS-level Critical Thinking and the Extended Project Qualification.
1. Contributing positively to the community 2. Using knowledge with compassion 3. Solving problems collaboratively 4. Solving problems creatively 5. Making fair and just choices 6. Facing challenges with determination

Extra-Curricular Activities
The School offers a wide range of team and individual sports, music, art, drama, cultural and academic extension activities. Through activity option choices and a number of core activities integrated into the timetable and in post-school enrichment time, the extra-curricular activities programme aims to develop skills associated with service, charity, teamwork, creative expression, leadership and challenge.
Pastoral Care
The quality of relationships and community life, and the personal formation of character are fundamental to the life of Harrow Hong Kong. In the Lower School, the Class Teacher is responsible for all aspects of each child’s educational and personal wellbeing: in the Upper School, the House Master or House Mistress takes over the primary role in the pastoral care of students. Boarding can begin from Y6 in the Prep School: most of the boarders are weekly, but full boarding is also available. Just over 50% of students in the Upper School board, but all students, whether day or boarders, are members of a House. The boarding Houses provide rich opportunities for interacting with students of different ages and from a wide range of backgrounds; there are currently three boys’ and three girls’ Prep Houses (Y6-Y8), and four boys’ and three girls’ Senior Houses (Y9-Y13).
Admissions
Please refer to the School website for further details.
Scholarships
The School offers scholarships, which are merit-based financial awards for students with gifts in areas of School life such as academic work and/or extra-curricular pursuits. The aim of the scholarship programme is to enable the School to draw such students from all sections of the global community, irrespective of their parents’ financial circumstances. Talented students from low-income families can be awarded virtually full-fee scholarships. Scholarships are available at the earliest fromY6.
Teaching Staff
The majority of teachers are British: collectively, there is a great deal of experience in British independent (day and boarding, senior and prep) and maintained schools, and in international schools.

Guide to International Schools The Harbour School The Harbour School, 2nd Floor, Kennedy Town Centre 23 Belcher’s Street, Kennedy Town, Hong Kong
School Profile What if we created a school that encouraged discussion and thought, rather than rote memorization? What if we added science, history and technology as vital components, encouraging children to actively participate in these subjects rather than just reading about them? What if we valued diversity and recognized children for their strengths rather than defining them by their weaknesses? Or if we encouraged children to proceed at the pace appropriate for them, encouraging them to think, learn and communicate at their optimal level? With its trademark small class sizes and progressive emphasis on differentiated learning, the arts, and global cultural literacy, The Harbour School has carved its own niche in Hong Kong as the little school with a positive, productive, and enthusiastic environment. Children at The Harbour School become authentic producers, not test-takers, in a progressive, creative and child-centered program.

Yew Chung International School 3 To Fuk Road, Kowloon Tong, Hong Kong
School Profile Founded in 1932, Yew Chung has been providing quality bilingual education to the learners of Hong Kong for over 80 years. Originally specialising in Early Childhood Education, Yew Chung International School (YCIS) now provides education from early childhood through primary and secondary culminating in the International General Certificate of Secondary Education (IGCSE) and International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma Programme. Today YCIS reaches beyond Hong Kong, and is now established in Shanghai, Beijing, Chongqing, Qingdao in China and Silicon Valley in the United States, with a total student enrolment exceeding 6,000.
Global Education in YCIS
YCIS offers the unique richness and diversity of both Eastern and Western cultures that equip children to be bilingual, global-minded, competitive, appreciative and caring global citizens. Students are nurtured in a multicultural environment with a fully rounded and balanced education which transforms them into global thinking individuals.
Integrating East and West
YCIS combines the best of Eastern and Western cultures by promoting fluency in two major world languages, creating a truly bilingual learning environment, providing courses of study in Eastern and Western philosophy. The integration of Eastern and Western cultures is also achieved through the Co-Principals and Co-Teaching models. Two Co-Principals, one Western and one Chinese, serve as partners in the operations and administration of the school. In addition, two fully-qualified teachers, one Western and one Chinese, together plan lessons and conduct classes in the ECE and Primary School, and provide excellent role models who respect and value one another’s culture.
YCIS Education Programme
YCIS’s international curriculum is based on the framework and schemes of work from The National Curriculum for England (NCE). It is a research based curriculum that allows high standards and ease of transition for international students who move from one country to another.
