Moving At Ease With over 60 years of experience and 1,000 offices worldwide, UniGroup Relocation is one of the world’s largest American relocation companies. It goes beyond moving boxes and household items to provide its customers with what they need for a smooth transition into a new city

oving can certainly be a hassle. Figuring out how to pack your possessions and furniture into individual boxes quickly becomes a stressful situation. It’s certainly harder for those who have to move to other countries for a new job. Luckily, there are relocation companies such as UniGroup Relocation that offer companies and their employees assistance with the daunting process. But besides the delivery of boxes and furniture, UniGroup actually offers many other services to its customers to help their transition. “The way I explain what I do as a living is moving is just one service out of 10 that we offer,” says Joseph Lai, general manager, Hong Kong of UniGroup Relocation and Sterling Mobility. He compares them with logistics company DHL as they take care of the actual transport and delivery of packages. But unlike DHL, they offer other services before and after pickup and delivery. “For the moving part, we specialize in handling household goods. If you have an eight-person dining table, I don’t know where you’re going to find the materials to pack that and be able to do it well enough to go across the ocean in a container. We [can] deliver it and unpack it and help with any claims processes.” This is certainly a plus for their customers as they won’t have to worry about where their belongings are and how to unpack everything. Instead, they can focus on settling into their new lives in a new city.
Welcome to Hong Kong While Hong Kong is an amazing city to live and work in, it can be quite overwhelming at times and require some time to get used to. “People come over with the idea that Hong Kong apartments are smaller, but they actually don’t realize how much smaller it is than in the United States or Australia,” Lai explains. “What we have seen for difficult

adjustments really is the personal space. In the United States or anywhere in the world, you say ‘Why don’t you guys come over? We can play Xbox or just hang out in the house’. But in Hong Kong, I noticed it’s not that way. It’s ‘Let’s go to the coffee shop down the street’ or ‘Let’s go to the American Club or the Yacht Club’.” Other issues that some new residents in the city might face are the loss of a strong friends and family support system, lack of knowledge of their new surroundings and not being able to communicate with the locals. To help their clients settle into Hong Kong, UniGroup provides them with a welcome pack. Some of the items included are a taxi guide, helpful tips and information on how to pronounce street names in Cantonese using English phonetics and AmCham’s Living In Hong Kong guidebook filled with information on local festivals and customs, things to do around the city throughout the year, recommended restaurants, etc. “We have services that we offer where we take them around the city. We show them the supermarkets, we take them to get Octopus cards, take them on the MTR. We show them where their offices are, where their housing is, and where the country clubs are if they want to join one. It’s like a private tour for people living in Hong Kong,” Lai says. If their clients own pets or have children, the company will work with

In the Middle East, people work from Sundays to Thursdays and rest on Friday and Saturday, so UniGroup would communicate with their clients on the best delivery time. For Hong Kong, the company knows how to work around its smaller streets that moving trucks can’t drive onto or tiny elevators that can barely fit a three-seater sofa headaches that new arrivals might not have been able to know beforehand.

them to find places that best fit their lifestyles. They would make all the necessary arrangements to get the pets over safe and sound. They help to ensure all the necessary paperwork is completed, working with veterinarians from both sides to be informed and setting up home quarantines. For families with children, UniGroup can assist parents navigate through Hong Kong’s notoriously intense process of enrolment into schools. “We do help put somebody’s children into school. There is no guarantee. What we do is we know the right people to connect them to. We can get them on a [school] tour with a few days notice. We can help them with the paperwork and sometimes coach the parents on what they need to do to get their kids ready.”
Local knowledge While UniGroup might not be an
4
instantly recognizable name, it’s actually the parent company of United Van Lines and Mayflower Transport, the two largest household goods trucking companies in the United States. It is also Asia’s largest American relocation company with 12 offices in all major cities in Asia, including Hong Kong, Tokyo and Beijing. Around the world, Unigroup has more than 1,200 offices in over 180 countries which comes in handy as they have firsthand knowledge of local customs and practices to prevent any complications for their customers in their move such as what they can or cannot bring into their new destinations. “For example, if you’re going to move from Hong Kong to Tokyo, you cannot ship [any toy guns or airsoft guns] to Tokyo or anywhere in Japan. Even if they’re fake. If they look like pistols in the X-ray, they’ll pull your whole shipment out and search through every single box. But we know these things in advance,” Lai says.
In 2014, the company’s profile grew significantly with the acquisition of Sterling Mobility. Following the recent consolidation trend in the relocation industry, UniGroup found a like-minded partner in the Londonbased relocation company. “[Sterling is] a fantastic relocation company that aims for the top. They aim for quality versus quantity. They have great talents, really good footprints in Europe and extremely solid business practices in compliance practices. So if you look at a checklist of things, they checked all the boxes that UniGroup, as an American moving company that is extremely invested in compliance, has as requirements,” Lai explains. Last year, Sterling managed over 9,000 international employee moves on behalf of nearly 400 corporate clients. One service that Sterling offers and UniGroup doesn’t is full assignment management. The relocation company can actually help companies manage expats they placed overseas. Working with a budget that the client company sets, Sterling could hire people, do their taxes and issue payments on their behalf. This way, the companies’ HR department can focus on the local staff while Sterling handles the rest. Right now the plan is for the two companies to operate separately under their own names. “We could share expertise and best practices, however the current direction that we feel right now is that we’ll let Sterling focus on what they’re good at, and we’ll focus on what we’re really good at,” Lai says.

Learning Never Ends Founded in 1967, the English Schools Foundation (ESF) has grown to a network of 21 schools. As it approaches its 50th anniversary, the organization has a clear strategy to innovate and develop its people and practices in order to offer the best to its students

s the largest network of international schools in Hong Kong, the English Schools Foundation (ESF) has a local family of five secondary schools, nine primary schools, a school for students with special educational needs, two “all through” Private Independent Schools and four kindergartens. A fifth kindergarten is due to open in August 2016. Despite the wide assortment of schools, they share the same philosophies and goals.

“ESF offers a high quality of education which nurtures curiosity and inspires creativity. We want our children to be really engaged in their learning, and to enjoy learning and coming to school. I always say to people, the most important person in ESF is the next student to come through our doors,” says Belinda Greer, CEO of ESF. Before moving to Hong Kong three years ago, Greer worked as the first Director of Joint Education for Stirling and Clackmannanshire Councils in

Scotland where she was responsible for 85 schools and 23,000 children. The Scotswoman has over 30 years of experience in education. “I was attracted to ESF because we’re inclusive. We’re non-selective, we welcome all children and we work hard to meet their learning needs, which I think is something that sets us apart,” she explains.
wide range of experiences and life-long learning skills. We want our students to leave ESF with confidence that they can meet whatever challenges lie ahead, we want them to enjoy life and contribute fully to society.”
High-performance learning
While the government is preparing to phase out its educational subsidy for ESF from next year onward, Greer clarifies that this will have minimal impact on ESF’s quality of education. “The subsidy would be phased out starting 2016, for Year One only, making this year’s Year One the last year to go through the system with subsidy. We have another 13 years of subsidy and we will continue to receive subsidy for students with additional support needs. We are working on a financial strategy to ensure we are running an effective and efficient system,” says Greer. The last group of students to qualify for the government subsidy will be the graduates of 2028-29. Greer also stresses that increases in tuition fees will be kept to a minimum, and that compared to other international schools in Hong Kong, ESF fees, with or without the subsidy, are at the bottom. Currently, for primary schools, the annual fees are HK$78,700; Years 7 to 11, HK$110,600; and Years 12 to 13, HK$116, 200.
ESF is renowned for academic excellence. This year, 17 ESF students achieved the maximum 45 points in the International Baccalaureate (IB) exam. 97.7 percent of its students passed their IB, compared with the global average of 79.3 percent. “Considering worldwide, 208 students scored full marks, and we have 17. It’s amazing. Many of our students move onto excellent universities across the world,” says Greer. While academic excellence is important and students do need to be able to perform well, Greer believes that education is about so much more. ESF places emphasis on developing confidence, collaborative skills and resilience. “We encourage our students to be fully engaged beyond just preparing for external examinations,” she explains. “Taking sports encourages resiliency and challenging yourself. It’s transferable, so students can have a

Learning together All ESF schools are currently operating at full capacity and there are no concrete plans in place for expansion, although the organization is open to the idea. However, there is a new initiative in the works, the Kowloon Learning

Campus. The plan is to merge three schools, primary school Kowloon Junior School (KJS), special educational needs school Jockey Club Sarah Roe School (JCSRS) and secondary school King George V School (KGV) onto one large campus in Ho Man Tin. By bringing the schools together, ESF is looking to foster an environment of integration and support, especially for JCSRS students. “We will have classes to support children who can manage some time in mainstream, but need additional support in their learning. Our curriculum is arranged so children can access it and learn at the right level,” says Greer. Teachers at JCSRS, as well as in mainstream, understand the learning needs of the children in their classes. A lot of time is invested for teachers to plan together. In addition, a team comprised of educational psychologists and speech and language therapists is also available to provide assistance.
Developing through sharing ESF is focused on continuing education and ensuring students in the ESF family have the best they can offer.
“We also [foster] global innovation in education. We have a number of principals and education officers who regularly speak at conferences so people are aware of what we’re doing. We certainly have contributed to some of the educational thinking, not just in Hong Kong, but beyond,” says Greer. 100 new teachers were employed this year out of 5,000 applicants. Greer believes schools can only be as good as the teachers, therefore ESF invests heavily in professional training so that their teachers will continue to develop. Recently ESF has collaborated with local schools and shared their practices. “We’ve opened places to local schools to take a look at how we’re developing our professional thinking practice and leadership work. We are visiting local schools because we want to learn from them too.” Greer is very pleased with the progress ESF has made so far. “I [came to Hong Kong] looking for a new, exciting challenge, and actually, education is a really small world,” she says. “What I found when I came was an organization very open to change. We’re innovative, and we’re constantly looking to develop. We’re celebrating our 50th birthday soon. I think we’re moving into, what I see, as an exciting chapter for the foundation.”

magine a home that encapsulates some of Hong Kong’s finest aspects: effortless transportation, convenient shopping, brilliant food, and the list goes on. All of course, with a view. There’s no vista quite like the Hong Kong skyline, and residents of the Gateway Apartments complex in Tsim Sha Tsui get to come home to gleaming views overlooking Victoria Harbour every day. Winner of a multitude of awards, the two towers located in Harbour City feature 499 units in Sutton Court and Hampton Court.
10
Gateway Apartments is near completion of its upgraded Studio and 1-Bedroom units, which are intended to better utilize space and create more living space for residents. Onebedroom units, which range from 995 to 1,266 square feet, will be upgraded to “1+1” apartments by adding a second room that can be used as a study or guest bedrooms. Studios, which range from 712 to 891 square feet, will also have sliding doors added to give residents the option of having the bedroom separated from the living area or the traditional open plan.
In addition, all of the newly renovated apartments will be upgraded to wooden flooring, for a cleaner, more hygienic lifestyle. Currently, there are special promotions ongoing for some of the newly renovated one-bedroom units. Gateway Apartments places great importance on green living, having installed one of the city’s most advanced solar power systems five years ago. On the rooftops of Sutton and Hampton Courts are 200 square meters of solar thermal heater systems, which harnesses solar energy to heat the apartments’ hot water system.
9 • 2015
Another additional tube solar collector measuring 188 square meters has also recently been added, which burnishes Gateway Apartments with the largest privately installed renewable energy system in Hong Kong. The system provides more than 200,000 kilowatthours of renewable energy, which offsets nearly 160 tons of carbon dioxide. There is even an “Environmentally Friendly Committee” that ensures the complex remains green, instilling policies such as implementing energy-saving lightbulbs and rechargeable batteries. All the apartments use water-saving shower

heads and taps. In addition, the complex have included air filtration systems and comprehensive waste-reduction policies. One of the key highlights of being a Gateway Apartments resident is access to the Pacific Club, a massive 140,000-square foot private club. The indoor Olympicsized swimming pool boasts floor-toceiling bay windows, which makes for an unforgettable swim whilst overlooking the harbor. For those just looking to unwind, the Jacuzzi and sun deck are ideal. There are many other ways to stay fit at the Pacific Club as well. The gymnasium has its own on-site trainers, or for
those who prefer a round of tennis, the club has newly renovated all-weather cushioned courts, three of which are outdoor overlooking the harbor, and the other two indoors with air conditioning. With Harbour City just downstairs, including more than 600 shops and restaurants, Gateway Apartments residents have all the best of Hong Kong’s convenience at their doorstep. Just a few minutes walking from the China Ferry Terminal and to the Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station, Gateway Apartments is truly a fitting name for a better lifestyle in Hong Kong.

Harrow International School Hong Kong 38 Tsing Ying Road, Tuen Mun, New Territories, Hong Kong
Harrow International School Hong Kong is the first international boarding and day school in Hong Kong. It opened in September 2012 and now has a combined roll of over 1100 students from Early Years to Y13 in its Lower School and Upper School. Located in a magnificent crescent-shaped building with custom-built facilities near the Gold Coast, Tuen Mun, the School integrates elements of educational philosophy, practice and traditions from Harrow School in England into the diverse international community of Hong Kong to provide a highly distinctive education. Academic standards are high throughout the School, which has already achieved excellent examination results at IGCSE and A-level. The School offers the option of boarding from Y6 when students enter the Upper School. Most of the boarders are weekly, but full boarding is also available. All students in the Upper School, whether day or boarders, are members of a House and have a House Master or House Mistress who takes over responsibility for their pastoral care from the Class Teacher in the Lower School. Its boarding ethos ensures there is a strong emphasis on the quality of relationships throughout the School community and on the personal formation of character in its students. The School also offers an extensive, high quality
extra-curricular programme and, distinctively, integrates a significant part of it into the Harrow Hong Kong day for all students from Y1 to Y13. Within its vision statement, Leadership for a better world, the School identifies six leadership attributes and focuses on making them habits for life: contributing positively to the community; applying knowledge with compassion; solving problems collaboratively; solving problems creatively; making fair and just choices; and facing challenges with determination. These attributes are embedded in all aspects of life throughout the School: the learning experiences in the classroom; the extra-curricular programme; and in the leadership opportunities that are available throughout the School. Teaching Media English is the inclusive language of the classroom, playground and boarding Houses for all students irrespective of their mother languages. In addition to English, all students have the option of studying other languages: Chinese (Mandarin), French and Spanish.
