Business Opportunities and Challenges
Thomas Stanley, Partner, COO Markets & Global China Practice, CKO, KPMG China KPMG’s Global China Practice (GCP) recently published China Outlook 2016, a report that finds China’s inward and outward investment patterns reflects the country’s economic restructuring, and that this is likely to continue to be the case in 2016 and beyond. The report also analyses China’s transition from an investment- and export-led growth model to one driven by consumption and innovation, which has led to the emergence of a two-track economy. The first track, in basic manufacturing and traditional industries, is experiencing significant headwinds, while the second, in services, advanced manufacturing and consumer markets is exhibiting strong growth potential. At this briefing, Thomas Stanley, Chief Operating Officer for KPMG’s Global China Practice, will share with you how to survive and thrive in China’s ‘new normal’, and adapt to changes in the business environment and national development priorities.

Mike Mikkelborg, Chairman, KCTAR At the meeting, Mike Mikkelborg, Chairman of Kyrgyzstan Centre for Textile and Apparel Research (KCTAR) will discuss Kyrgyzstan’s emergence as a sourcing destination as he reveals the country’s 10 Year Strategy and 3 Year Plan of Action. Leading retailers and brands are already investing into the Central Asian country as it becomes a new contender for buying budgets. He will share practical examples on how low cost does not need to come at the expense of low salaries for workers in Kyrgyzstan. During a 20-year career in the fashion retail sector, Mike Mikkelborg established factories and sourcing offices in China, launched a men’s fashion brand in the US and Japan as well as fashion brands in China. He has also held various corporate positions, including as director of business development, supply chain and e-commerce for GANT, group sourcing director for New Look, group business development director for South African value retail chain, Mr Price Group, and as commercial director for Modis, one of Russia’s largest value fashion retailers.

RCEP countries represent about a third of the world’s GDP and 45 percent of the world population. Talks started in 2012 in Phnom Penh and some of negotiating countries are currently suggesting that trade negotiations should conclude before the end of 2016. In the light of 13th RCEP round (June 13-17 in Auckland, New-Zealand), Deborah Elms, Executive Director of the Asian Trade Centre will give a feedback on the status of negotiations and discuss the impacts for non RCEP countries in the Region.
