Do not park in the driveways of Parade or Tour homes or block driveways of occupied homes.

Features • Featured Homes - The cost is $5 to tour all five featured homes. There is one new home and four remodeling projects. See pages 19-23 for details. Tickets are available through the Parade website or app. Members volunteer their entries in a fundraising effort to support their industry, Association and charity: Home Builders Care of F-M Foundation. A new home must be a first-time Parade Entry priced at $750,000 or more. A remodeled project’s value must be at least $200,000. • Mobile App - Download the app on your mobile device to browse information on each home, plan your route, get tickets, view home photos and more. Search “Parade FM.”

• Ask permission to take photos. In this age of social media and digital phones, it’s tempting to snap a photo of anything that interests you. Please ask the builder, remodeler or Realtor working the home for permission first. And remember, that floorplans and unique home layouts can present a copyright concern. • Wear socks and remove your shoes when you tour Parade and Remodeled Home Tour entries. Some homes may provide shoe covers. • Bring your children, but keep them close! Many homes are beautifully staged with fragile décor. Please leave pets at home. • No food or drink is allowed in the Parade or Tour homes, unless permitted by individual builders. • Do not use bathrooms in Parade or Tour homes.

Extras • Licensing Requirements: On each home listing in this magazine, you will see the builders’ license numbers listed for Minnesota and North Dakota (examples: MN BC003792; ND 369). Builders acquire license numbers for the states in which they work. North Dakota requires a contractor to obtain a license when the cost, value or price per job exceeds $2,000. Minnesota requires contractors to acquire licenses when the annual gross receipts from residential contracting or remodeling activities exceeds $15,000. Professional Designations & Councils: Breaking Down All Those Acronyms

You may have noticed groups of letters trailing behind many Builders’ names in this guide. They represent a professional designation or council membership from the National Association of Home Builders or North Dakota Association of Builders. They say a lot about a builder, remodeler or building industry associate. Professional designations and councils offer opportunities for Home Builders Association of FargoMoorhead members to improve skills, advance their careers and be recognized for commitment to professional growth. But what do they mean? • Certified Aging-In-Place Specialist (CAPS) – teaches the technical, business management and customer service skills essential to competing in the aging-in-place market. • Certified Graduate Builder (CGB) – emphasizes business and project management skills critical to a successful homebuilding operation. • Certified Green Professional (CGP) – teaches builders, remodelers and other industry professionals techniques for incorporating green building principles into homes — without driving up construction cost. • Certified Graduate Remodeler (CGR) – emphasizes business management skills as related to a remodeling operation. • Certified Graduate Master Remodeler (CMR) – This designation is held by a select group of

building industry professionals: applicants must have at least 15 years of remodeling experience before they are even eligible to be considered for the designation. • Housing Credit Certified Professional (HCCP) – Individuals holding this designation demonstrate a high level of knowledge, experience and education in the low-income housing tax credit industry. • North Dakota Professional Builders (NDPB) – NDAB makes its best efforts to determine a builder’s qualifications for certification as an NDPB. While the program recognizes the professionalism of a builder, NDAB does not make warranty or representations, express or implied, to home buyers or others. It has not inspected construction of any home and does not and cannot address the quality of a home. • Remodelers Council (RC) – Home Builders Association of Fargo-Moorhead’s Remodelers Council represents the remodeling industry and coordinates the Remodeled Home Tour. They are affiliated with the National Association of Home Builders’ Remodelers, paying yearly dues to receive valuable educational materials including access to webinars on specialized remodeling topics. The Council gives back to the community! Recent projects include Dakota Boys and Girls Ranch Youth Home; Dorothy Day House of Hospitality and building handicap-accessible ramps for those with limited incomes who must use walkers and wheelchairs to come and go from their homes.

GAINS GROUND IN TILING TRADE

When you walk through the new and renovated homes on the Fall Parade of Homes & Remodeled Home Tour, do you think about the teamwork it took to construct them? The individuals that make up those talented teams are skilled craftspeople doing everything from setting trusses to tiling the floors. In fact, there’s a pretty good chance Logan Braun, a recent West Fargo High School graduate, assisted with installing tile in one of the homes you tour. Braun is exploring opportunities in the trades, most recently working over the summer on the crew with Floor to Ceiling Carpet One. Four years ago, Braun was introduced to the trades through his freshman construction technology class. It sparked

an interest that led to more high school classes and participation in a Skills USA building competition. He says, “It made me realize that I like working with my hands and that I really enjoyed construction. My parents always talked about how I didn’t need to get a bachelor’s degree and that I could get a tech degree somewhere, be done with college sooner and make a good living.” In June, Braun participated in the Herdina Academy for the Construction Trades, a two-week session partnering teens with local professionals in the industry to complete a community project. The academy’s goal is to give students a different experience than the academic setting of a high school.

“The best part about being in Herdina was the fact that you get to try most of the trades in only two weeks,” Braun says. “Without that opportunity, I would not have gotten the chance to check out most of them.” Floor to Ceiling Carpet One Residential Tile Manager Jamie Kenowski was one of the industry pros volunteering with the flooring demonstrations during the Academy. He saw potential in Braun and hired him for Floor to Ceiling’s tiling crew. He helps carry and prepare materials, mixes mortar and assists with waterproofing, cutting and grouting tile, as well as cleaning up job sites once completed.

Kenowski says, “Logan is a great student. He asks the right questions and listens when spoken to which leads right into a dependable work ethic. He is always on time and ready for the day, willing to get his hands dirty and is driven to learn.” Braun received a scholarship in May from Home Builders Care of F-M Foundation and is pursuing a degree in building construction technology from North Dakota State College of Science in Wahpeton. Someday, Braun wants to own a business in the construction industry. He doesn’t know yet what that will be, but he’s taking every opportunity to learn about the lucrative options before him. “Where do we even begin?” “Who can help us with this?” Those were two of many thoughts going through Dave and BeAnn Canton’s minds after deciding it was time to transform their 1983 home.
